I see. The problem I'm having with this approach is I don't know the exact locations of traps in BG1 maze before Sarevok  :(

given the tight corridors - one bad step (isn't one of them "repeating" trap?) and it's over. I may give it a shot tho.

BG2 traps I have no fear of - I know BG2 much better.

Absorption potions don't give any electrical bonus for me. I could use Insulation+Boots (that would give 100%) and scrolls (100% again).

Damn. Now you have me rethinking my strategies! :P

As for mages - lightning bolt they cast doesn't bounce around with Spell Revisions (it's single target), it just fries whoever is hit by it :) .

some answers:

1) Thief Maze traps are NOT repeating, at least not the route I take - there might be more than one route. There's 4 traps, two fireballs and two lightnings just before the skeleton warriors.

2) The "repeating" lightning bolt trap is in Candlekeep Crypts on the way to the STR tome. It IS possible to hug the wall and avoid it - hug the bottom wall. I usually use protection though, because if you make a mistake...

3) The skeleton warrior traps are in the hallway AFTER the battle horrors/doom guards. Once you fight those, tripping the traps is your next goal, if no thief. Pro magic scroll works great for that, but 100% fire/lightning works too.

@Aasim Why would you take an all-paladin group tho? All goodygoody is cool enough right? Have a robin-hood like rogue, steal from the rich give to the poor - kinda guy, together with at least 1 paladin and a few other goldhearted fellows.

ps: your halfling barbarian portrait is AWESOME. Your fighter/cleric dwarf is the one I was talking about when I said ugly as ****   :P

Baruk {2} - dwarf kensai (4th and final update)

Sigh - the same old story I'm afraid.  I'd made the decision not to use any HLAs at this stage, but even so progress had become too easy: that resulted in a lack of concentration which proved fatal.

Baruk started the session by whipping through the de'Arnise Hold - not bothering with any loot.  He got up to level 22 for lowering the drawbridge and cleared the place with no trouble.  He accepted the Stronghold, though with no intention of returning to it.

Moving on to Trademeet he immediately got to level 23 by hacking the genies down.  The Druid Grove offered little challenge - Kyland Lind's group were made pretty harmless by a rare use of Namarra silence, Baruk had no need for potions so bumped off the rakshasas, while neither spore colony survived kai long enough to produce reinforcements.  Back at Trademeet he finished shopping and then helped Tiris and cleared the tomb (level 24).

Next up was Umar where Baruk picked up Ilbratha and a beljuril before moving on to the temple.  Dual-wielding Daystar he made rapid progress there - the only caution being to take on the undead groups with the liches one of two at a time and keep HPs above 90 in case of PW: stun.  He got to level 25 for recycling some old bones.  The Shade Lord died of a sunray without even the need for a follow-up attack.  An initial attack on Thaxy got him to injured before his stoneskin went up.  After running round a bit Baruk made use of Ras for the first time - it occupied Thaxy while Baruk made further attacks to finish the dragon off.  Reporting back to the mayor brought up level 26.

Before leaving Umar Baruk picked up Valygar's body and back in Athkatla that allowed him into the Planar Sphere.  He was careful to avoid the potential danger from maze by casters there (Tolgerias was another caster to be finished off while he was busy casting true sight) and had no particular problems working his way through.  Putting Lavok in his place got him to level 27 and repowering the Sphere to level 28.

After upgrading the Horn and picking up the acorns he left for the final Chapter 3 external area - Windspear Hills.  At the entrance to the ruins Digdag was too slow to retreat and Baruk moved on to find the large group of undead.  The intention there was to use a sunray and then iMoD to finish things off.  Unfortunately I was paying more attention to a RL conversation than playing the game and after equipping Daystar I forgot to switch back to the iMoD.  As a result Baruk was drained in the initial assault.  In PnP that wouldn't have been a problem, but I still wasn't concentrating and forgot that being drained in BG has the side effect of removing any item-based bonuses to saving throws.  Not immediately using a potion or a restoration scroll on himself therefore meant that he was no longer immune to domination when he attacked the last surviving vampire ...

@Grond0: Sorry to hear of Baruk's demise. Don't worry, I won't be giving any lectures about charm immunity helmets since I know you can't use them. My personal preference is pro undead scroll for that batch of undead.

Well, all-paladin is  cool, and they're very tanky class, and...they're paladins.

I found my f/c portrait as quite lovely and in-tune with BG world. ..He had a charisma of 3 so he couldn't exatly be an Apolon :)

Was there anything you need in that dungeon? I'm also curious, you wrote you finished De'Arnise hold, but not bothering with any loot - I assume FoA wasn't picked up either. May I ask why? I find this flail to be the single best  game weapon with it's no-save slow + Free Action and massive stoneskin -bypass damage....

Ouch, that's a sad ending Grond0 for Baruk. The game can really be unforgiving if you don't fully concentrate...
Still, I can see a Kensai entering the hall of fame sometime soon if you have the stamina for it.

There is an easy way to find them - once you see the green splashes on the walls you know they are near. Once I discovered that my runs through the Maze became a way more swift - you'll not need to check your every step with thief detecting traps.

@Grond0: sad to hear Baruk failed again due to RL distraction. Hope it will not take as many attempts as with your Wild Mage to succeed.

Bgee run update 2S1.1,

Hear text as mp3,

New beginnings; by Puk,

Sarah and Puk alternate attempts but I wanted a romance and the idea of putting Anomens’ tongue in her mouth is the true evil with bg2.

2s-baldr001.jpg2s-baldr002.jpg

Sarah awoke in a cage to find one of her baul powers has changed to ‘Horror’ and all her known spells except for ‘Identify’ and ‘Summon familiar’ have been wiped from her memory… no doubt the result of some sick experiment but the disturbing thing is she woke up with black hair. What kind of bastard dies an unconscious woman’s hair?

I don't think there was anything I needed there no.  Going there just represented my normal habit of doing all significant encounters available in chapters 2 and 3 before leaving for Spellhold.

Sorry to mislead you about de'Arnise as I did pick up the FoA.  My description of loot was intended to refer to gaining money rather than equipment for use and I would anyway normally make the FoA even if not usable (in order to get the XP reward).  I agree it's a great weapon.  Although Baruk would not  have taken any proficiency points in flails he would have expected to use the FoA against some ToB enemies (starting GWWs with it and switching out once an opponent was slowed)

Don't say things like that - just the thought of it makes me feel distinctly queasy .

Russell VII the solo undead hunter - update 3

Russell VII has made more progress. Unsurprisingly, the Umar Hills Temple area with all its undead were pretty easy for him. The shadow dragon was simple too, since with remove fear/immunity to level drain/SoH the dragon could do nothing but blind once in a while. Russell VII's trusty sling of seeking got the job done, though it took like 60 bullets.

Baldr252_zps272e827a.png

Since Russell VII is still vulnerable to FoD, Russell VII used a pro undead scroll vs. the shade lord.

The druid grove was cleared out as well, with little difficulty. Cernd took care of Faldhorn.

Prebek and Sansha were one-shotted while Russell VII was protected by improved invisibility. Then Russell VII looted what he could from the Harper Base, most useful loot being extra healing potions. Xzar didn't survive the assassin.

Poor Mook was murdered once again, but Lassal was forced to retreat rather quick. Russell VII is working on getting the IMOD so he can take out Kangaxx, he really needs the save help, and the AC bonus would help too. He used a Frost Giant potion plus DUHM to open the door to Kangaxx lair as well as the door to the lich in the gate district. They haven't been dealt with yet.

IS this SCS Corey? thanks.

Negative. I did try SCS, but it was necessary to buff and rest before every fight (and even with the buffs, I often had to spend thousands of gold in resurrections), and if felt too much like "work". Also, I've read Grond0's accounts when solo, and a great many fights he would "wait it out",  Alesia did that too - I don't find this fun either. Basically not going to play an ancient game if it feels like work.

The other part was I wasn't very successful with it - the farthest I got was when Revianne ambushed our party, and we were absolutely destroyed.

@USSNorway - best of luck with your new run. Is Sarah a dual to assassin? And I thought you couldn't dual to a kit, just from a kit. You got something that changes that? Regardless, hope they can get far.

This is going to be Thani's final update unless you guys convince me that a bug has been at work in my game :(

Thani decided to explore parts of Watcher's Keep, before she would set sail to Spellhold. She cleared the entire first floor. The level draining mists were harmless as she equipped the Improved Mace of Disruption, and she survived the statues thanks to good positioning and some luck. Thani retreated to the room left of the altar. There she would deal with the statues one or two at a time. Later she would do the same in the library.
Her 37 Magic Resistance sufficed to keep her from being Mazed and Symbol:Stunned (this was the luck factor). Maybe it would have been less frustrating if one of those spells had killed her.
She survived two Timestops, and - thanks to the aforementioned MR and her excellent saves (0/0/3/3/0) - various nasty spells such as Chaos, Slow, ADHW, and Sphere of Chaos.
The warrior/rogue/monster statues were Greater Whirlwinded into oblivion. The only statue to really form a threat was the Archer, but nothing that potions of extra/superior healing couldn't remedy.
On the second level doom befell her. She got cursed. I didn't see any stat changes or afflictions mentioned in the character record, but the SCS readme mentions a "Cursed Wounds" that Clay Golems may inflict upon hit (she had just fought one or two on the second level). What the readme doesn't mention is what the curse exactly does, nor how long it lasts or how it can be removed. The Helmite priestess by the Watcher's Keep entrance wasn't able to remove it, as the following image demonstrates:
She rested, woke up and saw that the curse was still there, so it seemed the curse wouldn't wear off of its own accord... However, as it didn't seem to do anything, Thani continued her exploration of the Keep. She had cleared the acid, electricity, and ice libraries on the second level, and would have done the same with the fire library, if it weren't for the curse: turns out that it keeps the character from healing. The following is the last screenshot I have of her, moments before she fruitlessly tried to heal herself with a potion of superior healing and got killed by the Fire Giants that would soon block her way to the exit portal.
My own thoughts: once again my limited SCS knowledge for BG2 showed. This Cursed Wounds issue wasn't something I'd forgotten by the way, but rather something I never knew. I must say that a permanent curse that keeps one from healing, that cannot be removed, and - I just tested this with 4 consecutive rests - that does not seem to wear off, is overly severe imo (except if your name is Grond0 haha), up to the point where I'm wondering whether this has been some kind of bug. So anyone who reads this, is this really how this curse is supposed to work? How did you deal with it? No more healing for the rest of the game?

Edit: Interestingly Thani hadn't noticed the effect of the curse when she rested because DUHM + 20 CON gives fast natural regeneration, which was not affected by the curse. So she woke up fully recovered.

Edit 2:
According to someone at the Baldur's Gate Forums,
"Ah this bug again ! It happened to Proesis aswell, maybe you remember it. I followed your advice back in time and I asked in the SCS thread if someone knew how to cure it, alas, it's working perfectly fine for everyone except us. Normally if can be cured with a simple Remove Curse spell, but for us it's impossible.

We have been afflicted with the very special solo no-reload SCS version of the curse, and the only remedy ... is death.

Jokes apart, get it off with EEKeeper, I think it's the only way."

I don't like reloading after having seen the 'the main character has died' message, but this does seem to be bug then, no? Looking forward to your views.

@Blackraven: According to this link people can cure this curse by either remove curse OR Greater Restoration, depending on your install. Did you try the greater restoration? If that works, then might not be a bug. They also said it might require casting greater restoration twice.

Hey Corey,I just checked. First, I tried a (lesser) Restoration on my self, cast from a blue scroll. Didn't do anything. In the image below you can see the fatigue effect portrait icon and the portrait icon for the unrelenting curse.
Greater Restoration, like Remove Curse, isn't a selectable treatment, as if the priest doesn't recognize Thani's status of being cursed.
Spoiler
It seems the only way to get rid of it would be to use an editor.

Have you tried ctrl+R with the console cheats enabled?  That's normally a good way of getting rid of bugged status effects.

@Grond0, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunatelky Ctr+R doesn't do anything (I do have console cheats enabled).

And what is more, I might even be unable to remove it with EEKeeper. Unlike ShadowKeeper, EEKeeper has no "State Flags" tab where one would normally uncheck a bugged effect...

Edit: fixed it under the Affects tab.

You have to use the infinity editor (not sure on name). Based on this data, does like a bugged state, but how do you not get this situation again?

@Corey, good question. As I mentioned in my previous (edited) post I managed to keeper the effects away, but it's indeed quite possible that the same bug will occur again. I wouldnt know of any way to prevent it other than not getting hit by Clay Golems anymore or returning to my BGT install (which I've done already with a Cleric of Talos whose exploits I'll report about soon in the BG1 thread).

Assassin 6 dualed to mage (7)... I had to rebuild her in tutu because bgee does NOT give a save that can be placed in bg2.

bg2 gave her baul powers based on class and  just picked the two spells she starts with... the others will come normal.

The basic engine allows 1 kit... it doesn't matter if it is at the front or back but you would need shadow keeper to build the character that way.

p.s. Posts will be coming... work is mad with X-mas on the way.

I had the same problem but a remove curse spell from Viconia cured me...

You might also try Heal, it cures leveldrain maybe curse as well?

Both options do make it necessary to get aid from npc's, what obviously isnt what your solo challenge is about...

Hey Corey, thanks! Just changed it. I really appreciate your help.
It's not Christmas yet, but still I can't help saying that this is such a good forum thanks to people like you.

@EA1: hmm I hadn't tried recruiting a Cleric. Like you said it's a solo challenge, with Valygar (for the Planar Sphere, don't like killing him) and Neera (for the enchanted shield) as the only very temporary exceptions.
It's an interesting point you bring up. If an NPC Cleric can remove the curse, that might suggest that Thani died due to her decision (well, mine actually) to go solo, i.e. no bug: end of game. (An NPC Cleric can also remove paralysis on a stunned character. A stunned solo character however, is beyond salvation unless the stun wears before enemies can kill him/her, which is a risk the solo character accepts.) On the other hand I'm pretty sure there isn't supposed to be any difference between a Remove Curse (or any other spell) cast by a party member and one cast by priests at temples...

Hmm, there's at least one difference - the priests at the temples take a lot more of your gold!
