Yeah, the thief kits from the original game were kinda bland, but I find that Rogue Rebalancing makes them a lot more appealing and manages to do so without going overboard.

Yes, I am playing with RR installed as well. It is a good mod that is mostly quite subtle in its impacts. I just wish that it could allow PC thieves to assassinate as easily as enemy thieves can under RR (enemy thieves can backstab from the front or any angle, and often at fairly long range. PC thieves still must maneouvre around the back). However, I understand that there is nothing they can do about this <sigh>.

Note on Alastria's Game

I sent Alastria to the Guarded Compound for a little workout. And while that crew isn't a worthy match for her at this point, it seems like a decent opportunity to reacquaint people with her approach.

For those who don't know, Alastria is a Transmuting/Melee Sorceress- she relies on magically created weapons
and doesn't have any ranged direct damage spells in her book. The majority of her kills are made while Shapeshifted. Her spellbook appears below. It's pretty odd, but it works. And it's fun.

(Btw. She's running SCSII with full Prebuffs.)

Level 1: Blindness, Spook, Protection from Evil, Shield, Chill Touch
Level 2: Mirror Image, Blur, Strength, Resist Fear, Web
Level 3: Meteors, Non Detection, Remove Magic, Slow, Vampiric Touch
Level 4: Minor Sequencer, Polymorph Self, Stoneskins, Teleport Field
Level 5: Phantom Blade, Shadow Door, Spell Immunity, Spell Shield
Level 6: Globe of Invulnerability, Improved Haste, Tensor's Transformation, Pro MW
Level 7: Limited Wish, Spell Sequencer, Spell Turning, Sphere of Chaos
Level 8: Power Word: Blind, Protection from Energy, Spell Trigger
Level 9: Shapechange, Time Stop, Imprisonment, Improved Alacrity, Energy Blades

Strange book huh? Here's an example of how it works.

The Guarded Compound

Prebuffs (in rough order of casting): Shapechange, Non-Detection, Spell Shield, Spell Turning, Improved
Alacrity, Pro Evil, Shield, Blur, Mirror Image, SI:A, SI:D, SI:E, SI:C, Globe of Invulnerability, Protection from Energy, Vampiric Touch (self), Shadow Door

Sequencers/Triggers: Minor- Strength, Web; Sequencer- Web, Web, Web; Trigger- Improved Haste, Pro MW,
Tensor's Transformation

Enemies: Sion, Ketta, Koshi, et al

Stage 1:

Alastria enters invisible, she then casts Time Stop. Followed by Imprisonment-> Sion.

Her next move: Improved Alacrity-> Disable. Specifically, PW:B (everyone), Sphere of Chaos x 5, Slow x 4, Web x3.

Posted Image

That was followed by Shapechange: Mindflayer, Minor Sequencer, Spell Sequencer, Spell Trigger

Posted Image

Stage 2:

When time resumed, Ketta and friends found themselves mageless, Blind, and Webbed in a 5 layer Sphere of Chaos with a negative THACO-8APR-buffed-to-the-max Mindflayer on top of them. It would suffice to say that they didn't enjoy themselves....

Posted Image

After munching on the melee fighters brains, Alastria waited for Ketta to make her appearance. But after
scrolling back through the battle log, it became clear that she'd never show: the Sphere got her shortly after time resumed. The end.

Posted Image

As I said, not a worthy fight at this stage, but it does illustrate her approach.

Suldanessalar awaits.

Thanks! I'm glad to see you're still around ToV.

Best,

I finally got BG running smoothly on my Macbook Air.

How much of a pain was this? I've not tried it but am tempted...

It took some fiddling but it was worth it. We can discuss in PM.

OK, cool to see Alastria back, and especially interesting to see she went with Sphere of Chaos after all.  Even running 5 of them simultaneously, it's hard to get them to affect ToB level enemies since they force an unmodified save.  I usually sneak in Greater Malison.  Are you considering it for your 5th L4 slot?

It's good to hear from you Amanasleep!

I picked Sphere (and Slow) on style grounds: I wanted to fill out her Alteration picks. I've enojyed tossing them, and could see them helping with crowd control.

Truthfully, I'm not really thinking about ToB though. Alastria's journey will likely end with Irenicus.

I'm confident that she could defeat him with some trial and error, but I doubt she'll get it right on her first try. And in a No Reload game, that means game over.

That's a big reason why it's taken me so long to get her back in action. Death is on the horizon, and I don't want to get her killed.

She's a long shot. We'll talk about ToB if she beats the odds.

Cheers,

A.

Irenicus no-reload is a challenge.  However, I don't think with your build it is necessarily an insurmountable one.  Your defenses are pretty strong--are you concerned that they will not outlast his initial attacks?  If you survive, it seems like you should be able to chain Time Stop out a victory.

I'm afraid of the unknown. I've never fought SCS Irenicus. And while I'm confident in Alastria's ability to defeat enemies with conventional abilities, special abilities and resistances worry me.

My concern may be misplaced. For all I know,  Alastria can steamroll him. But I'm willing to bet he'll have some tricks up his sleeve- tricks that will cost Alastria spells and time that she can't afford to sacrifice. She doesn't have that much staying power.

In any event, we'll know soon enough. The fight will take place tonight or tommorrow.

A.

Fair enough.  If you're up to Suldanessalar, then you fought Spellhold Irenicus, which is generally considered quite difficult in SCS 2 (although easier solo).  How did that go?  For final game, are you playing "vanilla" SCS 2 Irenicus or "Improved Irenicus"?

Spellhold Irenicus was a breeze- Alastria was overleveled at that point. There's a link to a video of the fight in an earlier post.

The final battle will be against Vanilla SCS Irenicus- the original Tactics version was too gimicky for my taste and I suspect I'll feel the same about the hybrid. An SCS scripted version of Slayer Jon should be a more than adequate challenge for Alastria. But again, we'll see. She has been basically untouchable up to this point.

Best,

A.

Btw. My fear of Jon is becoming downright patholgical. I've actually started a BG1 game with a new character in order to put it off a little longer...:?

I've set a deadline for myself: she'll face him by midnight tomorrow. One way or another, it will end.

OK, if you are facing non-Tactics Jon then I don't think you should fear him all that much.  Basically the main threat comes from his Timestop Melee and his debuff ability.  However, your defenses should be quite adequate--between SI, PfMW and Stoneskins you can easily survive his attacks.  After that, you are free to attack him under your own Timestops, which will expire his melee protections and let you auto hit.  Not sure what the issue would be.

Good luck and watch out for his Timestop -> Slayer melee cheese. It's brutal.

Apparently, it was so bad that the mod author implemented a command console which can disable this behavior. I'm using it in all of my games. Posted Image

Her defenses are pretty tight. She runs SI:A, SI:D, SI:E, SI:C with negative saves. She's also 100% resistant to Magic and Elemental damage when she's shifted- nearly so in human form. She remains untargetable throughout battles. Magic isn't much of a concern.

As for weapon based attacks, her AC is quite good when fully buffed, plus she has her MI's, Stoneskins and -of course- ProMW. She can get her hitpoint total up to ~150. I'll set her up with a pair of Hit contingencies to.

In short, so long as her buffs are up, she's hard to kill.

Debuffing her is tricky. She has GoI, Spell Turning, and Spell Shield in between incoming magical attacks and her Spell Immunities. She can refresh those of course. So, debuffers that target through Improved Invisibility get caught before they do anything meaningful. As for those that can't, SI:A, SI:D, II handles them. She also has backup on her untargettability via Non Detection + Ring of Air Control II.

If she can get a hold of a Black Blade of Disaster scroll, she can smack him with that at 8 APR.

Sounds good in theory, but lots of things do and not all of them work. I won't be convinced that this can work untill it does.

Anyhoo. My BG1 game is calling...

Best,

A.

Glad to see Alesia back in the fray with Alastria. I have been lurking here for the last couple of months, and just installed BG2 on my laptop here in India, so I may join in the fun before too long myself. I think Alastria will do fine against Irenicus in Hell. As everyone has mentioned, the main threat is his slayer's timestop melee attack, which is vicious. With all of your protection buffs, you should be able to survive it. However, if you have boots of speed + improved haste, you should be able to run out of sight before his time stop takes effect, which will usually prevent his melee attack during the stop. Other than that, as a mage you can remove his protections, and with one of your shapechange forms, he should go down eventually. HAVE NO FEAR! ....and if you die, just reroll. hehe.

My beserker had problems with him, because the beserker had no way to remove his protections, or to protect himself from his timestop melee other than by running away.

Cry.

It looks like the big showdown isn't going to happen afterall. My fault, not Alastria's

I was rushing her through the city and had her rest outdoors with a depleted spell book- forgetting that nasty critters might appear. She was ambushed by 2 Maharajah's, cornered, and killed.

She put up a valiant fight. Killing one and nearly finishing off the other- both in Flind form. But in the end, she fell. Rest in peace girl. :(

I knew my rusty play would catch up with me at some point, but it's still sad to see it end like this. Silly, sloppy. She was a fun character. I'll miss her.

Sigh.

Well. It looks like I'll be turning my attention to BG1 now. It's been a long time since I've done a Trilogy run. I'm in the mood for one.
Thanks to all the well wishes. Sorry for the letdown. :unsure:

It's good to hear from you Angiras! I spent sometime in India last summer. I've been thinking about going back.

Looking forward to your next run.

Sorry for your loss Alesia. Yeah that's what is difficult about this type of game, all the hard investment can be wiped away in a single stroke. Good luck with your BG1 game! I've been trying very hard to get back in the mood for this game but for some reason I can't seem to find the motivation to play it. I haven't played a game at all in awhile, so I'm thinking I might have a form of gamer's block.

Sorry to hear it, Rakshasas are another creature that - with mods - went from being a minor annoyance to a real threat.

Still, a solo character has a lot of things to watch out for, even at high levels.

The Rakshasa's weren't the problem. I was the problem.

This was my first game in a couple years and I simply lapsed. Alastria had run out of spells. She was up on that platform where the children are in the center of the city. She needed to rest, and I clicked rest- quickly and impulsively. It felt indoors. I didn't think.

The instant I clicked rest, I thought: "Opps. Didn't I used to always rest in the House of the Horn? I wonder why I did that?" That's when the Maharajah's appeared.

Sigh.

I know how you feel. I've gone through periods where I've felt "done" with BG. But I always seem to come back.

When I took my long break, it was a completely unexpected moment that got me interested again. I was walking through a park on an afternoon and suddenly my mind flashed to the clearing where you meet Drizzt after the Underdark. Then I wanted to play again. Who knows why.

At other times, all I really needed was an idea for character that I could get excited about. Not just the right class: a personality, a feel- a character that seemed alive to me. Without the right character, I'd be bored out of my mind. With one, I can immerse and enjoy.

In any event, it would be fun to see you posting again Shadow Leech.

Cheers,

A.

The return of Red Eddy!

After a some what inglorious start… Eddy died three times during BG1 but I persevered because it was more of a divine mod test than a serious no-reload run. Still, he will make the BG2 attempt without reloads.
Starting stats.

Adjustments; the usual bags; (Holding, Gem, scroll, potion and ammo) as well as giving Fade the Bounty hunter kit because I’m hoping to persist into ToB (the only thief that continues to improve through out the game).

Mods; A friend put me onto the Fade and Nalia romances, so I dropped my usual Keto and Sarah mods to avoid any possible conflicts.

Red Eddy BG2 update 1;

Ikky dungeon;
Pretty standard slugfest.
Loot = Chaos sword (for Minsc) and Mail of the dead +2.

The circus;
I decided to grab the ring of charisma before unloading the trash at the shops, clever plan right? It was only after picking up the staff of curing that I remembered the randomiser mod… bugger!

Athkatla;
Collected Nalia (my future GF) and Jan to assist with freeing Mazzy but then decided that Viconia would be more of an asset against the shadows so Jan got kicked.

Temple ruins;
Eddy tripped the light trap whilst under sanctuary then Viconia summoned up a couple of expendables to breach the front door and we swapped tanks, Minsc out and Mazzy in…

Posted Image Posted Image

de'Arnise Keep;
After some trepidation I decided to go troll hunting next. The mist fades away an we find ourselves ambushed by four trolls. My party legs it whilst Mazzy draws her sword and holds all four trolls. This is my first attempt at spirit trolls so I tested a variety of different spells/ damage types until deciding that strait physical damage works best. Under D&D rules nothing is immune to checkmate (hence the name) but the real stress came when reinforcements started arriving… Nalia tossed out a spider for them to play with while we retreated to the barricades and rested before getting the bad news from Captain Arat.

Red Eddy BG2 update 2;

de'Arnise Keep;
The good captain handed me several stacks of fire arrows and we cleared the first floor with out issue. Next step is the gate, dogs and that bug thing is unchanged but when I sent Yoshimo ahead he found packs of trolls on the walkway… perfect ambush spot. I laid traps at the base of the steps as a fall back then force feed them numerous ‘Silence’, ‘Web’ and ‘Cloudkill’.

Posted Image Posted Image

Second floor;
I ambushed the yuan-ti with Traps, ‘Web’ and ‘Cloudkill’ then sent Mazzy in to finish him… definite overkill. Nalia locked the troll pack in their room with two ‘Cloudkill’ then Eddy looted the vaults under ‘Sanctuary’ (they do aggro but don’t attack).

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

I mixed up my tactics and ended up in a Mexican stand off with the Clay Golem… with no blunt weapon of note I had Viconia sum up skelleys and we legged it out the door. “Lets see, I can make you a +3 mace, Mazzy” says Nalia and the new plan is Mazzy tanks and Viconia makes lots of skellies while the rest of us hide in the room… It sort of worked!

Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Yoshimo slowly killed the iron golem with traps but now I have a decision to make. I’m calling my first attempt as a tie because any one but Mazzy I could push on or even go to trademeet to raise, however there is nothing for it but return to Athkatla… I just hope that Nalia understands.

Have you considered having a cleric cast Sanctuary and then looting the weapons lockers? Old ironhead won't bother her, and then you could assemble the +3 FoA and take another shot at converting it into a rust pile.

Wierdo's Bhaalspawn Bretheren

Fighting Harpers

Progressing Jaheira's Harper quest, she has been summoned to the Harper Hold in Athkatla. Wierdo figures that everyone had better all buff up before going with invisibly (and some improved invisibility from spells and rings too!). Fire Resistance spells for Annakin and Minsc!

After Galavey's ranting for a bit, the Harpers turn hostile but still can't see Wierdo's party.

Minsc kills Bessen before he can get any spells out. In fact, he was casting Detect invisibility and that would not to be tolerated.

Everybody else does something to make fire. Brown Mold Oil is meant to be cold damage but seems to be treated like fire. In any case, it is non-magical so penetrates Nadinal's Minor Globe of Invulnerability nicely :)

With Anni and Minsc wailing away at them as well, the Harpers didn't last long. Nadinal the wizard was the most durable, but he died too. Was hoping for a Ring of Wizardry, but didn't find anything more exciting than Bracer AC6, +1 Cloak and scroll of Protection from Energy. :(

Yes I did consider (and do) the sanctuary trick... see the screenshot. I only have the green (acid) head so far but I'll make FoA as soon as I get all the bits.

Off topic; I've installed ubuntu on my home (game) system and will need some time to get BG2 up and running on it... Got around to removing that FREE Vista that has been a #@%^ ever sence I let micosoft talk me into trying it, now if I can just find some one with a XP (64bit) I'll finally have my gaming rig setup how I always wanted. :wub:

@ussnorway:

Make sure that you don't go outside after killing Torgal, because that seems to trigger the end of the keep seige and replaces the keeps maps - which would mean no chance to kill the big rustbucket golem!
