@Aasim, Firkraag would probably be your safest bet then no? Meaning the dungeon, not the dragon... :)

Probably yes, but I don't really like that dungeon. Thus:

Thadius, 7th BG2 update

Planar Sphere :P (that Valygar's body is something really disturbing in my inventory)

We get off by a really bad start, with Kayardi approaching us (I wanted US to approach HIM); thus we were poorly prepared for the halfling bunch.

48x_zps7ze5ss9y.jpg

Regardless, defensive measures be damned - we drop an Ice Storm and Chaos to make some room. Kayardi is unaffected by either of those, and goes to work with Malison, Chaos and similar crap. Appearantly he's an Enchanter, since he had almost zero damage spells. Just when I open him up for a Breach, bam, trigger. Meh. So annoying, this Kayardi.

49x_zps3kdnu4mj.jpg

Sure enough, some of his Chaos castings worked, but we can deal with those.

He finally died when Skibi struck him with some well placed arrows.

50x_zpsfkc49asi.jpg

The cleric there spent half his time confused, and when alone he was quickly killed.

As I said, my fear of WoTB is great in this place....

51x_zpskwwiwsxx.jpg

Given the huge ammount of prebuff for Lavok, it was pretty easy to get rif of him. His first Remove magic caught only barbarian. Meanwhile, he's hit by 2 Secret Words.

Then he casts Alacrity...ugly.

52x_zpsbmkx1sdy.jpg

His next remove magic does hit both Skibi and my protagonist. Uuuups. My protag has an amulet which keeps him safe from death effects such as WoTB, but Skibi is in grave danger now. Regarless, Lavok choses and ADHW, reduced to 30 damage by save + AoF.

53x_zpsy1tsgcsd.jpg

2x Acid Arrows, 3 arrows from Skibi, over. I was surprised it took so short!

54x_zpsdzprummr.jpg

Demons were a pita, but (imo) much easier than with aTweaks (I use SCS-only demons this time).

Due to their constant dispeling, I only fought the first two and didn't bother with the 3rd one.

55x_zpsyoajvjwp.jpg

And finally, Tolgerias. We went in invisible.

Skibi tried for a Disruption shot on him, but he succeeded in getting his buffs off. And some buffs he had! Spell Trap! And we can't remove it :(

This is gonna take a while...

56x_zpsluqnwsyq.jpg

His first move is Time Stop + Planetar + Mordy (given only Skibi was visible, Planetar is now near him). He still holds his ground, and demolishes the pet mage.

57x_zpscvtj3sen.jpg

Few rounds later, we down Planetar, while Tolgerias gates in a demon, and convinetly destroys our well-tought positioning with Telly Field.

He's still completely invulnerable.

58x_zpsjhigdqyo.jpg

One down, another one being gated. Still untouchable under PFMW+Spell Trap.

59x_zpszbqkryrm.jpg

His PfMW expires. Skibi uses the opening and hits the mage - causing his next spell to fail. Ha!

60x_zpsgfaeubme.jpg

It was more than Tolgerias could handle - and he dies the following round to 3 well placed arrows. We kill the second Cornugon, buff with Pro Fire, ramp up the mephits/salamanders, drop the heart into the machine, and are back in Alkathla.

Wrecking Crew XII (update 2)

After almost falling right at the start of the dungeon the Crew have now got some excellent equipment and should have a realistic chance of making decent progress now ...

They started off by returning from Trademeet to sort out the Rune Assassins protecting skinner HQ.  The efreeti intially waited upstairs (where I noticed it no longer has stinking cloud as one of its spells - shame), but nothing wanted to chase up after Crusher.  Eventually therefore the Crew rested and then all went down together.  Mincer took a backstab, but otherwise it was a clean victory.

Next they went to clear the Graveyard.  There was a major coup there when they dodged the Crypt King's horror before beating him up - finding he had Ras in his possession.  In one of the crypts a pair of mummies paralysed 2 of the Crew with fear, but the remainder were more than capable of beating them up.  Trying it again on a trio of mummies 3 of the Crew froze (I'm not sure if that reflected saves or whether each mummy targets a single individual).  That was potentially more serious, but the effect didn't last too long.  Slicer was diseased: I can't remember what the effects of that are, but potentially quite serious I think if untreated.  However, Beater's Bhaal cure affliction gains power with levels and was sufficient to cure the disease.  Downstairs some spiders were no problem.  I didn't fancy the Crew's chances against the undead in the Southern tombs, but Pai'Na was easy enough and most of her spiders died of divine wrath.  She had Kitthix to add another summoning option.

Travelling back from the Graveyard the Renfeld ambush triggered.  The mage there died before he could buff and the thief's backstab missed.  More of a concern was when, on the same journey, a random SCS ambush occurred.  A combination of spells, backstabs and MMMs quickly took Slasher down to dangerously low HPs before the concentration of attacks on the mage wore through mirrors and stoneskins.  With 2 invisible backstabbers I was concerned they might target Beater, so he had immediately moved away and was ready to keep running round - but the thieves appeared to attack the nearest target and it was easy enough to defeat them.

Finally getting to the Promenade I had another nice surprise when selling loot.  I'd found a ring I didn't recognise in one of the tombs and expected to find that was cursed, but it proved to be a ring of djinni summoning - testing that out showed that the djinni does have a stinking cloud.  That was soon put to the test against Mencar & co - the opening here showing that Brennan Riesling has been webbed to avoid him running away, the mage is unconscious and Pooky has just died in a djinni fireball.  That made the rest of the fight pretty much a formality.  Crusher was pleased with the full plate he picked up and other useful items were Brennan's ring of invisibility (giving Beater an alternative means of escape if he is targeted in future), a blur deck and the ring of earth control.

At the Docks they returned Renfeld before getting some more full plate from Officer Dirth - meaning everyone is now dressed in some variety of plate armour.  They also beat up some parents pirates (left that in for amusement - no idea whether that's a Freudian slip reflecting a 50 year old neurosis :P) there before tackling Prebek.  The efreeti now has 3 invisibilities (and is not subject to the restrictions of the Cowled Wizards) and that allowed a sneak attack to kill Prebek - the others were then no danger.  After completing Xzar's quest (finding a spyglass in the Harper's HQ) they successfully prevented Lucette escaping.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Beater, fighter 9, 60 HPs (incl. -18 from Claw), 383 kills
Slicer, fighter 9, 108 HPs, 280 kills, 2 deaths
Mincer, fighter 9, 92 HPs, 449 kills, 3 deaths
Crusher, fighter 9, 95 HPs, 492 kills, 2 deaths
Hacker, fighter 9, 86 HPs, 523 kills, 4 deaths
Slasher, fighter 9, 93 HPs, 410 kills, 1 death

Slicer was diseased: I can't remember what the effects of that are, but potentially quite serious I think if untreated.

It results in permanent death (you can't raise dead or ressurect). Nice progress.

Keep a nice progress!

Thaduis, 8th BG2 update

Firkraag's Lair

Other than He Of The Red Flames, there is one more dangerous battle here- Rukh Transmuter and his possible 3x Skull Trap galore. This time, he failed to kill anyone. Sorceress was succesfull in dispeling him, thus the battle was short-lasting.

62x_zps0safrjv7.jpg

I wanted to cheese Samia with Skull Traps. :P Worked ofc, but only she spawned. Grrrr.... 6-8K gold lost irrevocably.

63x_zpsljsv4kvf.jpg

Sorceress, WS, and Barbarian hit level 14 here. Sorceress 1st level 7 pick - Pro Elements. Yes, Firk is going down today, healing potions be damned!

We buff extensively, potions of Fire resistance are distributed evenly. To start the battle, we try to hit him with a crossbow bolt, it misses, but he's angry.

Secret Word removes his Deflection, and Skibi uses Disruptive strike to get rid of his stoneskins. He otoh, breaches Thadius. Crap, crap.

Potion of Fire resistance is to be taken asap, anything less than 100% is not good.

Note that Thadius here is equipped with Dragon Shield + Helm. It makes him immune to Wing Buffet knockback, but it makes him vulnerable to criticals.

I decided it's the lesser of two evils - the beast must go down as quickly as possible.

64x_zps6ofvqbfz.jpg

We lower his resistance to magic, and go to work with Magic missiles/melee attacks/Acid Arrows, swapping front-line tanks as neccecary.

His breath is neutralized fully.

65x_zps9yiia2vv.jpg

Some time later, additional Remove magic dispels our buffs again. Luckily, it failed to work on Skibi :D, my main damage dealer.

66x_zpshtiv3jfs.jpg

When he gets to badly wounded, barbarian Rages. Breach on Thadius again leaves him with only 50% fire resistance and no clean aura for a potion (he just used healing)

67x_zpstvofvv1z.jpg

I risk it anyway, and attack in melee. Critical lands on the beast, one more arrow, and it's good night gracie.

68x_zpsfp8pe24y.jpg

Conster was pathetic. Skibi killed him in 2 rounds.

69x_zpstumuhlg7.jpg

Muahahahahahhahah!!

Golden, I say. This party is golden.

Thadius, 9th (and final) BG2 update

A stupid mistake cost Thadius his life. I decided to fight Thaxy (after Firkraag's demise, it was supposed to be a chore). Unfortunately, before doing so, I finished Ilithium and upgraded MoD, only to forget to actually equip it. The beast threw it's breath, and Thadius got chunked to a million pieces. :(

This is the last screen I have - I alt+F4ed the game once it happened  .

notice the lack of NPP icon and FoA equiped.

Thanks for the info.

I had experience with said Ring only once in my current run and after Djinni died the Ring just disappeared (I've thought it's like other similar items a one-per-day-use one but seems it's only one-time-use item or I just missed something).

Now if only I'd read your post earlier that might have helped avoid the Crew's chances taking a major nosedive .

Wrecking Crew XII (update 2)

The AI clearly recognised the Crew's growing strength as the next SCS ambushers that appeared immediately had second thoughts.  However, they were slow making a run for it and 4 of the 5 were shot down anyway.  Mae'Var's tasks were quickly done - Rayic recognising too late to buff that he was under attack - and the guild's defences overwhelmed despite numerous backstabs using potions of invisibility (Beater stayed invisible there to avoid being targeted).  Mae'Var used PfMW, but that gave him no respite as everyone was using normal missile ammunition anyway.  There was some useful equipment for thieves and monks, but nothing usable by the Crew.

Returning to the Temple District they ventured into the sewers.  They were immediately greeted there by Kiel the Hero killer.  I had vague memories that was from Chosen of Mystra Encounters and that others would be nearby, so rested to heal before moving on.  I thought I was being safe by scouting with an invisible Crusher, but Silliria could not only see him, but target him with a dire charm.  Even though charmed, Silliria still started to attack Crusher, so the others tried to intervene.  Silliria was kind enough to teleport away from her companion, allowing the others to come to kill her (requiring +2 weapons) without alerting Aris.  However, Aris the Mighty didn't have long to wait for his turn.  There was then a minor tragedy - I was using the djinni to let the others get out of sight of Crusher until the charm wore off and assumed it wouldn't matter if it was killed, but uniquely among summoning items it seems the death of the djinni is permanent (as noted in Serg's post quoted above).  Oh well, it was a bonus in the first place.  Replacement loot included a Helm of Glory (allowing Slicer to get 20 charisma with the nymph cloak already purchased) and Winter King's Plate (non-magical plate armour, but boosting cold and fire resistance by 25%).

The kobolds around the rakshasa all called each other for help - allowing them to be quickly disposed of.  The rakshasa was a different matter - buffs made it difficult to hit while it had a fair number of damaging spells to share around.  No-one was critically injured in the time it took to wear the rakshasa down, but it seemed a lot of effort to get a non-magical long sword.  After resting to heal up the Crew helped Roger out (the efreeti providing the coup de grace) before looking in on Tarnor's party.  Kitthix tried a web on Gaius without success and discovered in this installation that annoys him.  Gallchobhair died moments later and there would then have been a running fight except that a vicious aerial servant entangled Hacker.  With him about to die Crusher tried a desperation ploy with the Horn of Blasting (I haven't experimented to find out the area of effect of that yet).  That stunned both Hacker and Slasher without affecting any of the opposition party - it did appear to get the aerial servant, but it it was stunned that didn't prevent it's natural invisibility from triggering to prevent it being killed and that also seemed to end the stun.  As a result, despite Ras putting in an appearance and deflecting some attacks, in the next couple of rounds 2 of the Crew died and then the aerial servant chunked Hacker!  Mincer and Slicer did finally manage to kill it in the brief intervals it was visible, but they then died just before they could finish off Draug Fea.  Beater immediately legged it to find somewhere to rest before using his ring to come back invisibly and pick up the pieces.  He found all the equipment on the bodies, but although he scanned the area with the tab key he couldn't find Ras (I dare say one of the opposition was standing on top of it) - so another nail in the Crew's coffin is hammered home there.

After everyone was healed up the Crew returned to the Sewers.  Before moving forward they waited at the entrance for the aerial servant to unsummon.  Without that and other short-term buffs for Tarnor's gang and with the efreeti on their side the balance of power had clearly shifted to the Crew and they had no real trouble finishing off the opposition.  Useful equippment included a magic throwing axe, full plate +1 and a helm of charm protection.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Beater, fighter 9, 60 HPs (incl. -18 from Claw), 390 kills
Slicer, fighter 9, 108 HPs, 290 kills, 3 deaths
Mincer, fighter 9, 92 HPs, 473 kills, 4 deaths
Crusher, fighter 9, 95 HPs, 504 kills, 3 deaths
Slasher, fighter 9, 93 HPs, 415 kills, 2 deaths
Hacker, fighter 9, 86 HPs, 535 kills, 5 deaths (chunked)

From my understanding of the Djinni ring, if the Djinni is ever killed, then the ring can never be used again. Otherwise, it's a 1/day or 1/rest summon, same as the others.

Edit: Urgh, sorry to hear about Thadius' demise. I hate the dragon fights and usually put them off for as long as humanly possible. :P

Streg, Half-Orc Cleric (of Talos)/Thief, 2nd and final update

Streg traveled to the Umar Hills where he first did the minor quests: the Killer Mimic (which spawned before the chest was touched, while the Half-Orc was summoning skeletons), Beljuril, and the Stone Golem. He then traveled to the Temple Ruins. A Scroll of Protection from Undead, and the absence of Liches (due to Streg being lower level still), gave him an easy time. Still a potion of clarity was needed to cope with Greater Mummies' aura of Paralyzing Fear, and a potion of speed to facilitate dealing with the hard-hitting Bone Golems. The Shade Lord and its buddies were harmless. Streg, a rather risk prone adventurer, then decided to take on the Shadow Dragon. Six traps (three from the Vhailor simmy), an innate Cloudkill, and lots of summoned decoys did the job. Thaxxy fell after a few rounds to the traps' poison damage.

In the Temple District Dryads with their Charms and Entangles, Kitthix with her Webs and Poisons, and a summoned Aerial Servant helped Streg defeat the gang of Tarnor the Hatchetman. He also learnt that it's better not to have to deal with hostile Aerial Servants. Hamadryads then provoked Sir Caldril and Lady Irlana into killing one another. One of the Paladins of the Order must have witnessed the atrocities because when he entered their building, Sir Ryan Trawl and his fellows wanted to kill Streg. The Half-Orc simply left and resolved to avoid that part of town for a while.

He went to the Copper Coronet but was attacked by Cohrvale and Bregg. He took the fight into the inn and saw Hendak turn hostile. All three were slain. It meant that Streg would complete the Slaver Compound quest without getting Hendak's reward. A Priest of Cyric was taken out with a backstab. An Aerial Servant and two Greater Fire Elementals helped with the rest. After a nightly escapade with Ryokoi and Arkanis, in which he felled two out of six Vampires, Streg traveled to Trademeet, where he decided to opt for an aggressive solution to the Djinni troubles. Taquee was slain for his Efreeti bottle, but Khan Zahraa turned the Half-Orc into a statue. (That's what you get Blackraven for trying to do things differently...)

Wrecking Crew XII (update 3)

The reduced Crew have been struggling on mandwarffully and made a bit of a recovery from the low of the previous session.

While in the Temple sewers they paid a call on Mekrath, who didn't last long under a general assault (using normal weapons to defeat his PFMW).  A couple of fireballs from the efreeti hurt the umber hulk guards and they were finished off fairly easily.  Checking the containers there got a bit of compensation for the loss of Hacker, Ras and the djinni when the berserker horn turned up.  After identifying things I also realised that I had Chimandrae's Warded Slippers - they provide increased movement rate and immunity to web, entangle and grease.  I had remembered their icon as something good, but had thought they were not usable by fighters, so that was a pleasant surprise :).

Rather than go on to the Planar Prison the Crew headed for the de'Arnise Hold.  However, the orog ambush on the way proved problematic when 3 of the Crew were confused and the others couldn't quite kill the opposition in time to save Mincer.  After visiting the Temple (and purchasing some arrows of dispelling - should have got those before really) they successfully got to the Hold.  The spirit trolls don't have spell abilities in my installation and the yuan-ti while beefed up a bit are still pretty easy.  As a result there should have been no problems in getting down to see TorGal - picking up a fourth suit of full plate from Glaicas on the way.  However, I was slow to realise that Mincer had not just been poisoned once by the Iron Golem poison cloud, but multiple times and was dying very fast.  Beater tried to cure him, but had been poisoned once himself and failed to cast the spell - leading to another trip to the temple.

Coming back again the two characters with +3 weapons proved enough for the iron golem while the efreeti and Crusher ran interference.  That got everyone to level 10.  They found the shield amulet downstairs in its normal place, though that's not much of a help to this party.  They finished off the remaining trolls and umber hulks prior to Torgal, though missed out on feeding the umber hulks when I forgot that with calls for help they would all come out of their room together.  The acid head for the FoA was in a chest there and was soon reunited with its fellows.

For TorGal, Crusher ran into his room (while the others stayed near the stairs) and used the Horn of Blasting, hoping that would split the opposition up a bit.  That worked well and the Crew initially only had to deal with TorGal and the 2 giant trolls.  That was still difficult enough though with 2 of the Crew and the efreeti affected by fear and TorGal hitting hard.  However, once the scared ones recovered he was quickly beaten unconscious.  He still needed about 20 HPs of damage to actually kill him though and I was getting distinctly worried he would get up again before the efreeti recovered and finished him with a flame arrow.

They tried to rest to heal up, but were interrupted by some yuan-ti.  Resting next to the stairs I didn't expect the yuan-ti to get a good enough sight of them to follow - and they didn't.  I certainly didn't expect the elder umber hulk from the next room to follow - but it did.  Fortunately it was alone and swiftly killed.  That just left the 2 yuan-ti mages and after the Crew had rested up they also found themselves under the hammer.  The container near Nalia's father had some Gauntlets of Dexterity.  Beater accepted the offer of a stronghold.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Beater, fighter 10, 63 HPs (incl. -18 for Claw), 408 kills
Slicer, fighter 10, 111 HPs, 309 kills, 3 deaths
Mincer, fighter 10, 95 HPs, 536 kills, 6 deaths
Crusher, fighter 10, 98 HPs, 522 kills, 3 deaths
Slasher, fighter 10, 96 HPs, 430 kills, 2 death
Hacker, fighter 9, 86 HPs, 535 kills, 5 deaths (chunked)

Death is a quite generous lady.

Aasim - that's always tough - to die not because you made a tactical mistake, but because of forgetfullnes.  Hope to see new guys from you soon!

Blackraven - I actually sadly smiled reading about the bitter ending of Streg, since I also managed to murder my character the same way in one of my unpublished test runs. Your prose is a quality treat, so hope to see you soon in BG1

Wrecking Crew XII (4th and final update)

Back in Athkatla the Crew spent much of their earnings to date on upgrading equipment - including a fifth set of full plate, the reflection shield, the Hammer of Comminution, Sword of Balduran and Dread Bond.

They then ticked a little objective off the list by sorting out the kidnappers and claiming the ransom.  To get the 2 reputation lost back they headed for the slaver ship through the sewers.  I remembered that there was a group of thieves led by Callendous on the way and expecting the encounter made it easy.  Their equipment will sell for a decent price, though they had nothing useful to the Crew.  Lilarcor could be handy to defend against chaos, though Hacker was the one who would really have appreciated the 2-handed sword.

Captain Haegan didn't last long and neither did the slaver mages.  In the middle though Beater nearly killed Mincer when he didn't move far enough forward to avoid the prismatic spray trap.  With Mincer down at 1 HP they avoided the poison trap on the stairs and went back through the sewers to report to Hendak.

Next they moved on to the Planar Prison.  They made a successful entrance there - shooting and killing the mage before he could buff.  That made the rest of the Bounty Hunters easy.  Moving round though the Crew had one of their toughest fights to date with a group of umber hulks, led by an Elder whose bleeding attack took Beater down to 17 HPs.  That was the good news though as things went downhill when they met the Master of Thralls.  Beater stayed out of sight there, which left only 4 of them to try and concentrate enough damage to kill the demon.  They failed twice as he went ethereal and healed and meanwhile Slicer was affected by a death gaze and turned into a ghast!  The third time round it actually took quite a long time to do damage to the demon again, but perhaps he'd used up his ethereal ration for the day as he stuck around long enough to be killed.

After picking up items, using a scroll to restore Crusher and resting the further depleted Crew moved on to the Warden.  The thralls didn't detain him and a large number of umber hulks long and he came out to battle.  A number of the umber hulks were whittled away, but the Warden's PFMW prevented a first attempt at using a dispelling arrow on him and he made Crusher's -11 AC look negligible as he cut him down.  With only 4 left in the party I had thought Beater needed to be present in the attack to fire his crossbow and the Warden spotted him after killing Crusher and immediately activated a GWW.  Beater tried switching footwear to get some extra speed, but the warden was still too quick for him and a rat-tat-tat from his blade spelt the end of this version of the Crew.

Wow first Aasim, then me, and now Grond0. The latter was right in calling it a bad day in Amn.

I think SCS Planar Prison is the hardest Stronghold Quest; that Warden is a beast, and a pack of Umber Hulks doesn't help either. Not sure if you had summons (Ras, Elemental Staff, Efreeti). They might have provoked the Warden into wasting his GWWs and spells, but even so, it would have been difficult I reckon. A fine effort nonetheless.

To be honest I think that party was always going to struggle there - probably should have been left for much later.  If they'd been far higher level then saving throws would have been less of an issue, but I doubt whether they could all ever have been made safe against the Master of Thralls death gaze and once that struck I don't think they had any possible cure.  I think it's targeted on whoever is weakest, so having a well protected character at the front doesn't really help (and a single character sent in solo would have no chance of over-coming ethereal regeneration).  Possibly a solo character supported by a full complement of fire elementals would have been an option (if I'd got the Staff of Fire by that point of course).

My original conception for the Warden was to send a single character up front to trigger a response and then to run them back trying to avoid attacks as much as possible while everyone sniped at the umber hulks.  That character could then switch round with others and with summons to spread damage around until the Warden could be debuffed.  The loss of characters and summons up to that point made that much harder to achieve and I think if the party had been full strength there they probably could have won - possibly with one or two casualties.

I saw Blackraven's post while typing - the party had the efreeti, Kitthix and berserker.  They were all used up front to try and blunt the initial assault, but didn't last long - Ras was sadly missed there.

Auch Grond0....sad day in Amn indeed. Exellent run, I enjoyed reading it a lot. Warden ended few of my runs as well, it's a hard battle (BBoD + a possible Time stop is very likely a death sentance).

been made safe against the Master of Thralls death gaze and once that struck I don't think they had any possible cure.

With 5 fighters, the only way to preserve your character is to kill the Nabassu  before 30 seconds pass. :(

Once again, exellent run. :)

Corarcher Update - Underdark

Corarcher and gang have made it out of the Underdark. Continuing from my last post, all else he did was clear the Kua-Toa Lair, purchase equipment at Ust Natha, and finish the Ust Natha quests. We decided to forgo silver dragon blood - Misty could have used the armor, but we won't bother with it this run (it's much more relevant for solo runs). Only scare was fighting the ambush on the way to rescue Phaere, the party got hit with a horrid wilting - killing Cernd and badly wounding much of the party, though not Corarcher. The party prevailed though and used RoR to bring Cernd back to speed.

We had made it out of the Underdark, but we realized something important - we don't have a freedom scroll to rescue Paja from Kangaxx's lair - she's still imprisoned and Hanna can't quite to level 9 spells yet. So we trudged all the way back to get it, returned to the Underdark Exit, and decided to end session here. Paja will soon be re-united with the group. She will be under-leveled but Corarcher wants her anyways.

Glad to see Corarcher's looking good.  Does Ribald not have freedom scrolls in his special stock in your installation?

Maybe he does, I don't know. But since I was already at the Underdark Exit, I got the last scroll down there.
