Wrecking Crew XIV (5th and final update)

The Crew moved on to the Druid Grove.  I thought that should be a fairly simple location for them, but early on I was slow to realise against some spiders that Slasher had been webbed.  That meant all the spiders treated him as a priority target and the delay in switching attack strategies proved too great to save him - resulting in his first death.

After returning from the Temple the Crew quickly smacked down the trolls (gaining the potentially useful Spear of the Unicorn), but then came across more trouble against an Elder Earth Elemental.  Its initial earthquake stunned 4 of the Crew, but they recovered without casualties.  Attacking it through its invisibility and with limited +3 weapons available was difficult, but I thought I was making good progress until I mistook who it was attacking and Slicer died.  The others were able to finish it off though without further losses

Back again and silence and stinking cloud took its toll on Kyland Lind and his druids - they had the Staff of Earth (with no charges, but 15k gold was invested to recharge it).  The rest of the area was cleared, apart from the rakshasas who were left for now, before Cernd was invited by Faldorn to have a bite to eat.  Regrettably though, in this installation Cernd stays in human form and doesn't even try and cast spells - leaving him a helpless victim of Faldorn's ironskins and insect plagues .  Faldorn is therefore going to be left to rule over the Grove, which means that the Crew have no access to the potentially useful shops there.

Incidentally I noticed that Slasher had lost the Helm of Balduran at some point in the last session.  I'm not sure where that was, but thinking back I have a feeling that the beholder in the temple sewers used telekinesis - I'll have to watch for that in future and make sure I check the area to avoid further losses.

The Crew were running a bit short on easy work, but did take down Captain Dennis and his unmerrie men.  Their suits of full plate meant the whole Crew are now outfitted with those as standard. In the same area they did some hopping in and out of a house to ensure they didn't have to rely on saving throws while killing Dracandros and his companions.

They gave up on finding some glasses of identification and just paid to ID lots of sundry loot.  The cash boost from that allowed the purchase of some more improved equipment, including buying some dispelling arrows.

Returning to Watcher's Keep they activated the statues and then hopped in and out of the Keep while killing a couple of them.  Then disaster struck when they were unable to leave - they tried at least half a dozen times before two of them were affected by a symbol stun from an arriving mage.  I suspect that it was just extremely poor pathfinding preventing them leaving rather than that the exit was actually inoperative.  For the last couple of attempts at leaving I can see why there might have been a problem as everything was very crowded, but that was after they had been pushed back towards the exit and had moved around several times to try leaving from different angles.  Probably what I should have done, but didn't, was to try and move only a single character onto the exit point to ensure they were not getting in each other's way.

Once the first character was disabled things looked pretty bleak.  It's possible there might have been time for the remaining Crew to kill their companions and escape, though I'm not sure about that.  However, Beater chose to use improved invisibility and move away while other characters were being finished off.  Out of sight, invisible, in a room with shut doors you might expect to be safe - but that was never likely as several demons came hunting him both by opening doors and using teleport without error.  Beater did manage to dodge round and make his way back to the entrance and tried to leave.  The statues couldn't see him, so he seemed to have a realistic chance - but this time there was a reason he couldn't leave as one of the others had had the required stone.  He was about to try and search the bodies when the game ended.  I don't know what caused that, but it was an instant death effect - I suspect probably a Wail of the Banshee.

@Blackraven: Thanks! ToB is close...The only hiccup I forsee is that the demons in Hell might be a problem, with most of the party having poor saving throws - will be sure to buff for that best I can.

@Grond0: Sorry to hear the demise of your crew. I was really hoping I'd be able to put the Wrecking Crew in the Hall of Heroes. Always next time I guess.

Possibly, though I think the odds are stacked pretty heavily against them in that setup I was using.  They were a long way off being able to survive a fair fight with demons and I couldn't really see any way they could win against Irenicus in hell even if they somehow made it that far.  I might give them a run in my basic BGT setup next time - I think they would have a more realistic chance using that.

Wow.  Imoen got a single flower and I got a whole vase :D.

I'm alternating between 2 setups at the moment.  One is basic BGT.  The other (that the Crew were using) is also BGT, but includes Ascension, Oversight, Bonehill, Grey Clan, BG1 NPC, BG1&2 UB, CoM Encounters, Solaufein, G3 anniversary, Strategems V30, BGT Tweaks, Turambar fixes, BG2 tweaks, item pack, atweaks, polytweaks and randomiser.

Bob the Biffer (update 1 - the dungeon)

Bob has survived BG1 without the use of potions in my basic BGT installation and is now trying to fix his way through BG2.

@Grond0: Sorry to see Bob didn't make it. I'm surprised how many times the Fallen Paladins have ended your runs - they are such push-overs with parties. High AC doesn't work against them? Perhaps Ilbratha and improved invisibility?

I agree they are pushovers whether solo or party.  However, the weakest enemy can kill you quite easily if you're busy talking to a merchant rather than fighting or running .  Ironically, I'd deliberately led the last 2 badly wounded paladins to the merchant as Bob's inventory was full and I thought that would save time going back to pick up their armour to sell (not that he actually needed the money anyway).

The last time I remember getting killed by them was also when dialogue failed to pause the game - in that case as a result of the fight between Carbos and Shank.

The greed! Bob presented a classic case of the dragon disease. Hopefully his reincarnations will be more cautious about their gold-hoarding activities.

Coracher the elven archer - FINAL SoA Update!

So Corarcher's team clears out the enemies in Suldanessar - our strategy was pretty simple - if melee enemies, direct attack, if enemy is caster use summons first. This worked in every case. Nizi had a little problem in our encounter - we opened with 3x call lightnings - Nizi didn't last much longer, with Misty getting the kill shot.

Next, was the Tree of Life fight vs. Irenicus - it was a bloody fight.  I had forgotten that Irenicus was immune to Coracher's attacks with his fireshield, so Corarcher used bolts of biting. Corarcher was safe with his protection from magic scroll doing its job - took a bit but yes Irenicus does give it up.

In hell, Coracher of course must choose the good routes (else would have been become fallen) so does so. The beholders would have been a disaster. Corarcher was the only person immune to imprison due to the scroll still being active, but he was killing them too slow. Hanna and Joshua tried to throw area effects but were hit immediately and disrupted - Joshua was even turned to stone! Enough was enough, Joshua can get chunked if something isn't done - Misty and Forrest charge and with their help the beholders fall very fast - Cernd uses his ring of earth control to put Joshua back together we get him back! That was a near miss. The rest of the tears were straight-forward.

Time for Jonny boy himself. Max buffs that made sense and summons too.  The team killed the enemy demons, VERY fast! We then summoned a planetar (we couldn't do so before, as in my install my planetars will go hostile if they engage enemy demons) and press our attack on Irenicus - the massive attacks, also the fact that everyone's weapons except Misty's has elemental damage was severely disrupting Irenicus' spells - Irenicus falls!

The party makes it to the enchanted grove with the strange statues - next session we'll talk to them and see what happens.

EDIT: Forgot to mention what allowed everyone to smash Irenicus is Joshua did a dispel magic, removing nearly all of Irenicus buffs and this in turn helped Irenicus to be defeated quickly.

It was indeed a case of greed is not good - that's a hard lesson for me to learn :o.

Well done Corey - best of luck with ToB.

Does protection from magic work against imprison (I forget these minor details).

Kaxir made some earlier progress I forgot to write up, this is what I recall from the few screenshots taken. There was a close call in the vampire lair as Kaxir had cleared out all the spiders outside and was badly wounded. A lack of healing or regeneration wasn't an issue with a protection from undead scroll until the grimwards attacked. Kaxir ran and summoned the efreeti - a bad idea as the ensuing fireball took him down to 10hp while meleeing 3 of them. A precautionary healing potion was taken but with 32hp left at the end he'd have just survived.

Lassal embraces Stonefire with a hit for 52.

Baldr038_1.jpg

Bodhi takes a series of 20 something damages before she can exploit the lack of kensai armour, thanks to Ilbratha mirror images.

Baldr039.jpg

Kaxir starts with a mighty hit for 60 but finishes with a whimper (and a potion of invisibility to prevent death) against umber hulks.
Baldr040_1.jpg

After resting, the hulks are no threat but that was two close calls in one session.

@Gate70: Yes protection from magic protects from imprison - this is usually how I clear the beholders in the tear trial.

Kaxir had a bit of time to think about the Master of Thralls, and some help in confirming his saving throws and hit points would both be beneficial. The entire battle...

If you are referring to Protection from Magic scrolls and the spell Imprisonment, then yes.

Protection from Magic via scroll is implemented through the immunity to spell level X effect, where X ranges from 1-9. Imprisonment, the mage version, is a 9th level spell, consequently, a Protection from Magic scroll will foil it. The version of Imprisonment which Demi-Lichs get differs from the mage spell in terms of range and casting time, but it too is coded as a 9th level spell. Protection from Magic will foil it. The same holds for Elder Orb Imprisonment.

Note, however, that it you were to somehow encounter a modded version of imprisonment that was imparted with out a spell level within the ranges of 1-9, then Protection from Magic would not help you. You'd need immunity to spell effect (211). That can be attained via Slayer Change, Enrage, Avoid Death, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere, and, if you are playing an Oversight Monk, Lunar Stance.

Good hunting!

Best,

A.

Btw. Congrats Corey!

Btw II. Bummer Grond0. Bob didn't strike me as the gabby type but I guess I was wrong. I'm sure you'll bounce back.

Kaxir drops the Warden in double-quick time but the group of umber hulks nearby force another run. After half a lap he tries the rat form and holds firm at about 40hp then suddenly drops to 10hp. No potions of invisibility in the potion case so a potion of extra healing is used, but another close call and maybe one of the 50 charges from the Cloak of the Shield would have been wise.

On to the de'Arnise keep where a group of trolls get him down to 20hp. The rest of the keep is easier though, and after considering his options Kaxir sets off for Brynnlaw.
