Glorydd, Dwarven Fighter/Thief, 6th update

Glorydd's fame, mostly earned in the country (Umar Hills, Windspear Hills, Trademeet, Arnise), appeared to have followed her back to Athkatla, because several prestigious institutions requested her services. First, there were the Paladins of the Order of the Radiant Heart, who must have been informed by Garren Windspear of how she avenged the Paladins she had unknowingly slain as a result of Firkraag's trickery. Her task consisted in convincing a band of Fallen Paladins that acted within the city as if they were still true Paladins, to cease their activities. Unfortunately the only way to 'convince' them was by giving them a beating with the Flail of Ages. Glorydd took quite a few hits herself, but didn't suffer any serious injuries. The reason was her use of the Defender of Easthaven in combination with a suit of armor she had received as a gift from a Gnomish peddler for saving his skin from the Athkatla revenue service. Both items increased her damage resistance. [Bracers of AC3 gave her reasonable AC.]

The second reputable institution that employed her was the Temple of Helm. The priests wanted Glorydd to investigate a sect of the Unseeing Eye, whose members habitually cut out their own eyes in devotion to  their supposed God. She even got a second commission from the church: convincing the famous artist Sarles to produce a sculpture for the temple. Glorydd began with the latter task. It took her to the Government District, where she learnt from Sarles that he'd only work with 200 pounds of illithium, and to Waukeen's Promenade, where an ore merchant told him that such a quantity would be impossible for her to obtain. Glorydd got an alloy from the merchant, but when she gave it to Sarles the sculptor noticed the difference, and was quite upset with it. Glorydd returned to Waukeen's Promenade and obtained the ore merchant's source of illithium, a Duergar named Hilldark. Unger Hilldark however, told her that any illithium was to be found with his brother Gorje, in the Umar Hills.
Glorydd decided to rest in the Den of the Seven Vales inn, before she'd head out to the Umar Hills. In said inn she would only have her rest after dealing with a band of brigands that were no match for Kitthix and her. In the Umar Hills she found Gorje Hilldark, but he told her that he had no illithium. Gorje and Glorydd traveled back to Athkatla, to the Copper Coronet, to hear Unger confess that their latest shipment had been stolen by fellow named Neb. She would find - and have to kill - him in the Bridge District. When Glorydd went to see Sarles, she learnt that he had left Athkatla with no intentions of returning. Much to her surprise the Helmites actually appreciated the Sarles' 'work' (he had barely touched it) on the illithium alloy.

Glorydd started her investigation of the Unseeing Eye in the sewers below the Temple District. It proved to be a dangerous place. First there was group of thugs. Glorydd had already taken out their Mage when their leader, an arrogant Dwarf, required her to hand him 1000 GP. Glorydd, buffed with a potion of defense and an oil of speed, and still reliant on her equipment's damage resistance, used her flails to exact justice on the lot. Other violent encounters included a Sea Troll, and a Rakshasa that was injured by Wand of Cloudkill poison, and whose protections were dispelled with an arrow of dispelling before Glorydd struck it down. She found the Unseeing Eye cultists' base, but not yet the Unseeing Eye - a Beholder - itself. The Dwarf agreed to obtain part of a control rod for the cultists, hoping that would increase her standing in the cult. However, when she learnt from an ex-cultist that the rod, if assembled, could be used to slay the Unseeing Eye, Glorydd decided to doublecross the cultists, should she ever find the rod.

But first she inspected a sarcophagus similar to one she had found in the Docks District when she had been looking for Valygar (who was said to live in one of the houses there). From the sarcophagus in the Docks District, the voice of a trapped soul had spoken to her, and begged her to find parts of his body in other tombs. Glorydd opened the tomb and was shocked to face a hostile Shade Lich. She quickly cast Protection from Undead on herself, but saw that protection removed when the Lich cast Remove Magic on a Gelugon it had gated in. It provoked Glorydd into using another of her green protection scrolls. She then survived a Time Stop, slew the Gelugon, and found her melee combat prowess inadequate against a Dark Planetar, so she fled from the latter creature until it returned to the lower planes. She then gave the Shade Lich a taste of her flails, until it was permanently slain.

The voice of the trapped soul sounded in her head. It complimented her, told her top pick up the remains that could be found in the sarcophagus and directed Glorydd to the Bridge District. There she found an abandoned home that contained another sarcophagus, guarded by yet another Lich, an Elemental variant. It was as clever as its Shade cousin had been, for it removed Glorydd's protection from undead by casting Remove Magic on summoned Mordenkainen's Swords before the Dwarf could distance herself enough from the summons. Thus Glorydd had to use up yet another Protection from Undead scroll before she could finish off the Lich.

She took the skeletal remains out of the sarcophagus and returned to the Docks District to bring them to the trapped soul. This trapped sould proved to be another Lich, albeit a special one. She slew it with relative ease, using her trusty flails, and without having to recast Protection from Undead on herself, but then it took another form, that of a Demi-Lich. And that Demi-Lich simply flouted Glorydd's protection from undead; it defiantly attacked her with spells and with Melf's Minute Meteors. She fled upstairs, and outside, but Kangaxx the Demi-Lich was determined to kill her. It followed her out on the streets, prompting Glorydd to get back inside the house (hoping to prevent any casualties). Glorydd was near the stairs when she saw Kangaxx enter the building again. It proved to be a perfect position for her for it allowed her to escape the magical energies Kangaxx would cast at her, by simply descending the stairs. It was also a good position for slowly stripping the creature of its protections with her Sling of Everard (a highly enchanted sling that required no bullets). Glorydd's Reflection Shield bounced any Flame Arrows cast at her back to Kangaxx. Thus the Dwarf and the Demi-Lich remained locked in combat for a long time, with neither being able to hurt the other. Until Kangaxx ran out of Stoneskins and PFMWs. At that point Glorydd equipped Carsomyr, and with an oil of speed, DUHMs and later a potion of Storm Giant Strength she managed to slay the abomination. [The strength buffs were considered appropriate in order to reliably hit the fast-regenerating creature, because Glorydd was non-proficient in greatswords, until after Kangaxx fell. She leveled up both as a Fighter (15) and a Thief (18). A proficiency pip went to Two-Handed Swords, HLAs were WW and GWW.]

Amongst Kangaxx' remains Glorudd found an extremely powerful, enchanted ring that she equipped after identifying it with her Glasses, and a blue scroll she would later trade for a Time Stop scroll at the Five Flagons Inn, through a mysterious portal, with the Half-Elf and her feline companion that had previously asked her for a scroll of that type.

Re: the Beholders, Aasim's buffs didn't set my mind at ease for Glorydd. She has very good saves, but I fear that might to be enough against the Beholders, Elder Orbs, and Hive Mothers.
Do some of their attacks not bypass MR or allow no save? Or maybe they cast Malisons or Lower Resistances. In my lastest playthroughs I've avoided them as much as possible.

Edit: The Shield of Balduran is no option in my install because they steal it.

I'm reluctant to advise since I don't have experience with your install.

In my install they do not use Malison or Lower Resistance. I'm not aware of any installs in which they do.

In my install, the saves on their rays are not associated with large modifiers.

In my install, I'd feel confident facing regular beholders (not elder orbs or hive mothers) with a well equipped high level dwarven F/T with substantially negative saves, assuming I had covered magic damage and electricity damage via some combination of items (EX: BoIB + Cloak of Reflection + Corthala Family Armor)

I have not seen Imprisonment from an elder orb or hive mother in my install, but I operate under the assumption that they have the ability and I behave accordingly. Avoid Death will foil Imprisonment and should be non-dispellable. Note that "should" is a key word here. I would want to test -in my install- the behavior of Avoid Death in the face of Anti-Magic Ray before relying on it. In the absence of testing, I'd protect my Avoid Death with a Spell Shield. Either way, I'd make sure I had an exit strategy consistent with the short duration of Avoid Death.

Best,

A.

Yes: the buffs you mentioned would be sufficient against gauths- assuming the gauths don't have fear or charm rays in your install and or your saves were adequate. They would not, however, be sufficient for beholders, elder orbs, or a hive mother due to anti-magic ray.

Do beholders steal the Shield of Balduran in your install?

Oh. Well, per Blackraven's run - why on earth do you want to fight things such as a Hive Mother?? It's not like you'll need XP....

Charm doesn't affect Monks regardless, and Remove Fear has a low casting time so I don't really care about it (afaik with the saves Phoe had at the time it's about 30% to be affected, provided that they use the ray - and they won't use it as first action. In same line of thinking, there's very little chance of them surviving Phoe Gyi's melee strikes long enough to make it count - their morale breaks quickly).

No, shield doesn't get stolen.

I'd certainly avoid them if I could.

There are two that are a touch tricky to avoid in my install: the one flanking Diaytha, and the one defending the Greenstone Amulet.

The Greenstone Amulet is important for solo F/Ts, amongst others, in Ascension since Tamah's breath weapon has a 50% chance of causing sleep and offers no save.

Makes sense- especially with a party backing you up.

Thanks Alesia and Aasim. I'm inclined to assume Beholders behave in my install as they do in yours, Alesia. I'm pretty sure SCS is my only mod that touches them. I'll see what I do with the Unseeing Eye. Maybe wait till after the Underdark for Electricty protection (although I have no memory of bad experiences with their electricty damage).

Aasim is right in that Hive Mothers and Elder Orbs can be avoided. I'm not sure if Irenicus' Beholder in Hell (Tactics/SCS hybrid) has Hive Mother or Elder Orb abilities. (What I do know is that it drains DEX or CON. If she makes it there Glorydd will probably try to kill it with pre-set traps at its spawning point.) The Fear Trial in Hell also involves one or two Elder orbs iirc.

Blackraven: For the trial in hell, as a F/T you can just use the Dragonslayer sword (I think that's what it's called, the one Samia is after) and take the right (from character's point of view) passage, get the tear and return the way you came, and never have to fight any beholders. If you have UAI, could also use a resist fear scroll.

Yes. I've never fought those elder orbs.

The only full grown beholders that I typically have to deal with are the Greenstone keeper, and Diaytha's bud.

Perhaps you're thinking of a Simulacrum using a Protection from Magic scroll from the quickslot? That won't work in my install: illusions can't use quickslot items. Even if it did work, I wouldn't allow it.

That is what I did mean. I don't think that I have ever used Simalcrum, but I have read of people who have used it to do just that. However I can understand your reluctance to use what some regard as cheese. I personally rarely use scrolls other than green scrolls and to learn the spells. However, I can well understand those who do. It's a different way of playing, and so long as the player enjoys their own style of play, I am all in favour. It is a game, not a competition.

Ever since my stalker, Ashoka, was killed by Tamah precisely because she had skipped the Greenstone Amulet out of fear of the beholders, all of my characters have collected it. Some have killed the hive mother, others have made a break for it, relying on their saves and resistances.

She's fracking scary. She'll chase you out of the lair.

Phoe Gyi, 8th BG2 update

Where were we? Ah yes, Viconia needs level 7 spells. Well, it's time to tackle the rest of the vampires and Edwin's lich I guess.

Lich comes first.

Edwin does the honour of speaking to him. It's he that wants the damn scroll.

137_zpsu4jo01em.jpg

First step - send summoned crap to apsorb some spells. He splats them all in Incidenary Cloud.

138_zpssetm4mc3.jpg

Jan is a brave little fellow. Whenever he sees illusions, he goes in to remove them. This time lich got the best of him, however. Triple fireball sequencer sends him packing.

139_zpspuillvd9.jpg

Remember all those Ice Stroms we had cast? Turns out, Neveziah had two! :D

140_zps0vqiayrt.jpg

Jaheira is also feeling brave this evening. Not all is bad - he has no more spell trigger! :P

141_zpss64qjrjg.jpg

After some time of healing potions usage (he had no more high-leveled spells to throw on us), his protections expire, Phoe Gyi saves against his fear aura and Edwin is happy with his scroll. Idiot.

142_zpsmlge4xgy.jpg

Now, vamps. Since I don't use SCS version, only Tanova is "somewhat" notable - unless she gets struck by Creeping Doom, that is. should have buffed with Fireshield, my lass...they eat through her stoneskins, and prevent spellcasting unless a save is made - making her play very defensivly. Phoe got hit by a 3xRemove Magic sequencer and simply waits for PFMW to expire. 4 rounds after, Stunning Fist.

143_zpspntfmoup.jpg

144_zpszdxzqnso.jpg

We report our success to Aran, but refuse to set sail just yet. Viconia hit level 14. Now, why is this so important to me? Because she can summon these lovely little kittens.

145_zpsr5obepj2.jpg

Now, this is what I call a summon.

I really wanted to test them out, but it appears news travel swiftly in Alkathla. :D

Ha, I haven't yet even finished SoA....I don't bother myself with things that are in future. I'll think about her if I get there.

I haven't fought Diaytha in No-Reload, ever. My longest run had Yaga-Shura defeated, only to die to WK level 3 demons.

Fwiw,  IF Edwin manages to get Alacrity and Vecna, there's no Hive mother, Hive Father, Hive sister or Hive Uncle that will stop him. :)

No doubt. I'm more worried about Glorydd, although she should be able to fix mommy dearest as well.

If it is any comfort, Blackraven, I have never seen Imprisonment out of either hive mother.

Imprisonment seems to be an elder orb thing. Although, again, I operate under the assumption that a hive mother may use it.

Phoe Gyi, 9th BG2 update

Planar Prison

Is there anybody who doesn't whack the Yuan-ti there instantly? :)

147_zpsraziiaex.jpg

Further up, no Yuan-ti, only Umbers + Minotaurs. Cool.

148_zpsno9vkgnw.jpg

Monks have that relatively odd ability Quivering Palm. It's actually fairly decent mage-slayer spell, with it's death save.

149_zpskhyin4kf.jpg

Nabassu there is a pain in the a**, and can be outright devastating for ill-prepared with aTweaks. Many things depend on luck - will he gate succesfully, and if he does, what will he gate. In this instance, gating failed.

You can see by the buffs I took no chances here. Important thing to note - never, ever use Imp.Invisibility here. It prevents removal of Death Gaze since one cannot be cast upon anymore.

150_zpscdwitx0x.jpg

Never the less- we send him to Abyss really quickly.

151_zpshhz2kdbx.jpg

As per Warden...well, Edwin has the most defensive spells memorized. he did forget a few.

152_zpsdjuknlbf.jpg

Viconia: Yo, you forgot something.

Edwin: Whaaaaat? I have Spell Shield, Deflection, Stoneskins, Dispel Screen - whaaaaaaaaaaat?

Viccy: Free Action + Chaotic Commands?

Edwin: uuups...

Poor blob tried to at least avoid Umbers by drinking invisibility potion. Dispeled instantly, PW:Stun follow up. That's it, he's dead. The only thing to see is if he gets chunked or not.

153_zps53c6xbfa.jpg

What's my precious party doing at this dark hour? Summoning, that's what.

Edwin dies. No chunk, yey. Fwiw, him being stunned isn't all bad - all hits are autohits, so he won't be critically hit. Jan tried to kill him with his crossbow, but was too late, Umbers got the kill.

154_zpsp197175k.jpg

The Warden himself summoned a demon, who PW:Stuns Jan. Our own summon is here - Death Knight. Run, hulks, run.

155_zpsyt5nrpf6.jpg

DK kills most of hulks with his Fireball attack  -the few who survived the onslaught are killed by Jaheira and Viconia. Phoe Gyi, being the martial arts master, whacks the summoned demon. Now summons target the Warden. Here he exibits something I never saw before - a zero casting time Mazes - 3 in a row, all on summons.

156_zps0oulnvdu.jpg

DKs are smart however, and exit the Maze quickly, while Jaheira's Fire elemental keeps him busy. Fin. No Time Stop, no BBoD. I must have been terribly unlucky in previous installs. :(

157_zpsgt88kizd.jpg

We raise Edwin, pick up the loot, sell most of it, and are now going to visit Lavok.

Phoe Gyi, 10th BG2 update

Planar Sphere, part 1

I'm starting to get a bit overly confident here, so i decide for some commando-style action on Kayardi.

158_zpsj9fqxscf.jpg

Well, that did it. :) No more mage spells to worry about.

Cleric there summons skellies, while his comrades are getting beaten like ragdolls. Skeletons + Viconia - free summons.

159_zpslayayknu.jpg

160_zpsh7fkc9n4.jpg

Upper two mages - Edwin did them with 2x Remove magic. Note that I'm not overly concerned about Phoe Gyi being malisoned/dispeled/breached here. I have full faith in my party. Bring it on, creeps.

161_zpswivhfrux.jpg

162_zpsquqbwjgh.jpg

Lavok is interesting. He won't use illusions, but there's a possible Wail and a certain ADHW (few). Regardless, we open the battle by tossing the book Golem in front of him. He banishes him instantly, we use spell removals to get rid of his Spell Shield and Deflection. He casts TS+Alacrity and goes debuffing - jahiera eating his Breach. We summon a Nishruu. Note that Phoe Gyi has nothing to do here. He's simply hidded in shadows.

163_zpshwaznrfb.jpg

he must have a soft spot for Jaheira, hits her with ADHW.

164_zpsr0fhkfk2.jpg

Edwin lands a Breach on him as well. He responds with Mesthil/Fireshield/Stoneskin sequencer, but that won't stop Ice Storm.

165_zpsd3klkyg7.jpg

Neither will PFMW....

166_zpszub9yl6b.jpg

(as a sidenote, I don't counter PFMWs with normal weapons - since neither AI does so. Same rules apply! :D )

It doesn't take long for two Ice Storms to finish what's left of him.

167_zpsnd1ibdf6.jpg

Now, Demons plane, but that's for later, since it's rather longish.

I will tear their hearts out, I will.

Phoe Gyi, 11th BG2 update

Planar Sphere, part 2, Demon Plane

I do this by taking down the Nabassu first - this was easy.He gated in one more Nabassu, tried to turn Jaheira into  a ghast, she saved. Np. Nabassu are dangerous for their gaze, but very lackluster in defence. Next, the main deal, Lea'lyil. She didn't like the gest, and teleports to Phoe Gyi instantly.

169_zpsdaaxcsp4.jpg

We have all of our mightiest summons here with us. Pausing the game made me realize Phoe Gyi doesn't have Free Action - potion was used. Jaheira Insect Plagues everything. We start by killing Maurezhis first.

170_zpsmtu3roje.jpg

Divine casters stand ready to do any neccecary countermeasures for eventual confusion or Cloudkill attempts

171_zpshjpbwdcz.jpg

Some (long) time later, she's dead.

172_zpse1dbqzwe.jpg

Finally, the 3rd demon - Glabrezu. I *hate* Glabrezus. The most annoying oponnents in the whole game. Scum of the Abyss.

173_zpsj2xwkxrm.jpg

Sure enough, as if one Marilith wasn't enough, he gates in a second one. The little Mephits there cause a world of pain in a moment. We're Cursed - hit by bad luck, causing our aim to falter. With so many damage instances, HP is quickly brought down.

174_zpsjomvjgod.jpg

The real deal here are priorities. Marilith is way too tanky to kill quickly. However, with her 6 apr she can't exactly be ignored. Glabrezu is difficult to kill as always, but is tied in melee with Phoe Gyi, so can be ignored for the time being. Thus, the little Mephits die first. Jaheira casts her 2nd Insect Plague, to lower their rolls slightly. Any damage is good here, especially if party friendly.

175_zpsgsgygfac.jpg

Unfortantely, Marilith really can not be left unchecked. It kills Jaheira very quickly, and throws a Cloudkill. Glabrezu has Phoe Gyi grabbed, and he can't move. Worse yet, Marilith confused him!

176_zpsvtwrfhcb.jpg

Neither Edwin nor Jan have any Break Enchantment memorized. Viccy does. Now she must go around the demons, through the cloudkill, cast the spell at Phoe Gyi without getting disrupted (aTweaks demons love to kill disabled victims- this is quite a bit different from SCS behaviour). Removing Cloudkill is impossible now, Jaheira had Zone of Air memorized, while Viccy spent her on first Marilith. She manages to pull the spell of just as Glabrezu hit her. Phew...

177_zpsajajm9td.jpg

Expeditious retreat! We find a more open space to fight these two. Leared the lesson - Chaotic Commands are cast on Phoe. Another Cloudkill. Edwin and Jan are trying to get a hit it, but it's hard business for them to hit.

178_zps0djmodwx.jpg

Out of the two, Marilith is easier to kill, despite having more HP since Glabrezu has indefinite image castings. Some focus fire downs her.

179_zpsgxxprx3v.jpg

Jan now starts detecting illusions, forcing Glabrezu on defence. Your knees are mine!

180_zpshixzv82u.jpg

And that was it. Only Tolgerias to go.

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Firkraag

If there was something unsatisfying about this battle, it was the sense of inevitability- the sense that Firkraag had no reasonable chance of winning, no reasonable chance of doing damage even. Nonetheless, Captain Swarmi and I were both pleased with Arcadia's performance, and that's saying something: the Captain and I rarely agree on anything.

The greatest drama in this mission surrounded whether Arcadia's See Enemy Contingency, which had been set in the Windspear cabin, would make it to Firkraag's den. The odds were not in Arcadia's favor.

Congratulations goblins: for that, you've just won yourselves some Ages.

bpPQYzW.png

The contingency was reset outside Firkraag's crib. And in case anyone is wondering, SI:E was selected just in case Firkraag had Malison available to him. L5 had been allocated to two castings each of SI:A + SI:D and one casting of Pro Acid. Arcadia only has 5 L5s.

Arcadia took her standard buffs here, with minor adjustment. Pro Cold was skipped, Pro Acid was added. Fireshield: Blue was skipped as well, in the interest of freeing up another slot for Stoneskins. In the absence of Fireshield: Blue, Mirror Images were used as the visual reminder for Spell Immunity refresh. A pre-battle VT was cast for extra hitpoints.

Arcadia also took some potion buffs, including Potion of Defense, Potion of Fire Giant Strength, and Potion of Fire Resistance. An Oil of Speed was kept at the ready in the event that Improved Haste expired, and a Teleport Field x 3 Sequencer was prepared, just in case a Wing Buffet and a charge pinned Arcadia in a corner.

Firkraag opened with a Sequencer, which included Haste and Remove. The Remove was foiled by SI:A, the Haste effect was promptly dispelled by an Arrow of Dispelling.

My advice to Arcadia had been to use Arrows of Dispelling to remove Firkraag's Stoneskins whenever he recast and fight with the Sling of Seeking.

Captain Swarmi pointed out, however, that this would be a waste of Arrows of Dispelling: Firkraag is not dangerous, and Gessen would fix him irrespective of whether he was running Stoneskins. Once again, I was forced to defer to the Captain's better judgement.

Too slow to catch Arcadia, and with his breath weapon thwarted by fire resistance, Firkraag tried Magic Missiles, which, sadly for him, bounced off Spell Turning. The Gessen salvos kept coming.

A Wing Buffet sent Arcadia into a dangerous corner, but her movement rate advantage permitted her to escape without using her emergency Teleport Field x 3 Sequencer.

Time to refresh the Spell Immunities.

And now the finish: ProMW->Greater Whirlwind.

I've been active on these forums for over a year, but they've never been as alive as they are at present. Great stuff. Am really having difficulty keeping track of everything (and keeping myself from logging in all the time, even at work lol).

Anyway belated thanks to Corey for pointing out that the Beholders in the Fear trial can be avoided. I remember though that my Bounty Norgath, who used Dragonslayer to get to the tear of Bhaal, had to fight the creatures anyway after they had somehow noticed his presence.

I'm still unsure how Glorydd is going to try and get the Greenstone Amulet, but we'll see :D

Great progress Aasim... which is my usual thought whenever I see your updates. I still think you'll make it through the trilogy sometime soon.

And Alesia, convincing as (almost) always!
You seem to use at least half your spellbook in each of your more serious battles. Does the same apply to the 'lighter' battles? If so, I'd understand it (minimization of risk), but it would mean that Arcadia needs to rest a lot. For the sake of comparison, Glorydd did Mencar, the sewers (Tarnor, Rakshasa, Sea Troll), and the Liches without any resting between battles.

Nice work, Aasim.

That's aTweaks, more precisely the fiendish gating component. It's good fun but I found Improved Irenicus in Hell (SCS/Tactics style) in combination with said component a bit too much for my taste. It soon got overcrowded. My Swashbuckler/Mage multi (no-reload up till then) was too slow in killing the fiends, and ended up getting killed himself. That was more than a year ago though; maybe I'd fare better now. As I've said before, it's a mod that's worth looking into.
