The Arcane Army (update 3)

The Army started off by preparing for ending the tyranny of the Cowled Wizards.  The location I've normally used for this in the past doesn't work well during the day-time due to a lost innocent wandering around, so I was looking for an alternative.  The first one chosen seemed OK and Rosemary duly cast invisibility before running away outside sight range.  The enforcer will still react when she comes back just within sight range, but she can leave before any of the hostile Cowled Wizards arriving properly notice her.  In this case, however, when the Cowled Wizards appeared a guard was obviously near enough to hear the noise and intervene.  I let him kill two of the enemies before thinking the Army really should get involved to stop him pinching all their XP .  They started by unleashing greases, only to find they had already waited too long and a new set of enforcers were ready to pounce.  The Army quickly ran away and came back into the area at another point - dodging Sansuki who wanted some help.  A round of webs and stinking clouds was followed by 4 cloudkills and a malison to account for the second group.  However, returning to the first group they just found a hostile guard, but no sign of the other 2 Cowlies.  Leaving the area and returning again suggested they were still around, but a search first invisibly and then visibly found no trace of them, so they've probably disappeared into a crack in a wall somewhere.

For the third group I reverted to my normal location, but once more things didn't go quite according to plan.  Being used to playing solo I don't always leave enough space between party characters and one of them pushed another into sight of the enemy mages while casting.  The Cowled Wizard didn't get enough of a look to come after them though and webs / stinking clouds and cloudkills then gave a clean kill.

There were no errors with the fourth group, who died without a whimper.  The same applied to the fifth group.  The sixth and final group mainly died pretty quick, but Zallanora always seems to be able to teleport away during a time stop to avoid dying.  He left behind a pit fiend, which closed down the Army's normal shop - oh well, no great loss (unless you're Mira of course).

While they had those spells memorised they took down Mencar's group.  Brennan Riesling is very resistant to acid, so got some extra skull traps to make sure he couldn't get away.  Captain Dennis got a similar treatment, though he successfully saved enough to get off a shot or two before being MMM to death - Thyme has dagger proficiency, so took his throwing knife as a back-up magical missile weapon.

While in the area they sorted out the kidnappers and then picked up the ransom before going to the Temple sewers.  They resumed the cloudkill tactics with Tarnor's crew (they had a spell trigger spell, which might be something to look forward to in the fullness of time) and also picked off the rakshasa and sea troll.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rosemary, mage 11, 49 HPs, 2 deaths, 353 kills
Parsley, mage 11, 53 HPs, 0 deaths, 282 kills
Thyme, mage 11, 50 HPs, 1 death, 246 kills
Sage (PC), mage 11, 67 HPs (incl. 12 from cat, 6 from ioun stone), 199 kills
Nutmeg, mage 11, 47 HPs, 1 death, 199 kills
Pepper, mage 11, 43 HPs, 0 deaths, 225 kills

I don't know about the better mage.  If I was you I would avoid giving them a fair fight B).

Noticed that in your write up - ok no fair fight (I did give them a fair fight the 1st time, which is why I lost 2 people)

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 74 - (2nd and final update)

Lug, dwarf kensai (Grond0) & Slug, dwarf kensai (Gate70)

The Thug Twins took one risk too many today and finally came a cropper.

They started off at the Graveyard on the hunt for a ioun stone.  First though they cleared the upper tombs - the Crypt King was potentially a tough adversary, but though immune to missile damage he was subject to Azuredge's destroy undead ability.  Downstairs they attacked Pai'Na.  Lug had intended to use a firebreath potion on her, but pathfinding problems meant he was unable to get to her and ended up burning up a few spiders while Slug finished her off.

Heading for Umar for another ioun stone they rescued Renfeld during an ambush and decided to return him.  An immediate orog ambush hit both the Twins hard and Slug had to resort to running the last couple around while Lug threw his axe.  Prebek and Sanasha were both silenced by Namarra and killed before they found their tongues.

At Umar they hunted some chickens to get a beljuril and protected a mage from a rogue golem to acquire Ilbratha.  At the ruined temple things became trickier.  First the duo were ambushed by a number of shadows.  Slug chose to stay and fight and only survived thanks to the strength tome he used in BG1.  Inside the first major group of undead shouldn't have been too hard, but Slug left it a bit too late to retreat and 2 skeleton warriors hit him in unison.  After stashing equipment and going to a temple to raise him the Twins returned to pick up the equipment, but then left the rest of the area for another time.

Next they were on the hunt for the Ring of Gaxx.  In the temple sewers they killed the sea troll and the rakshasa before opening up the Unseeing Eye quest.  Then a couple of PfU scrolls and a frost giant strength potion topped up by DUHM allowed them to kill the liches.  There was a nasty moment when Lug saw Kangaxx's original form change.  However, after the conversation he was unable either to pause or move before attacking again.  That can result in a bugged change preventing the demi-lich from appearing, but fortunately the delay while the axe was in mid-air was just long enough for Kangaxx to finish his transformation.  Daystar then rapidly wore him down - getting a final hit in just in time to prevent the scared demi-lich from fleeing.

The final action was going on the Unseeing Eye trail with the intention of picking up a better hammer for Slug.  The idea was that Slug would approach a group of 3 gauth by the bridge invisibly and smack them down using Gaxx improved haste, while Lug would support from distance with Azuredge.  However, that went wrong for a number of reasons:

- insufficient allowance for the lag effects in MP

- not taking into account the nearby undead joining the battle.  Although they didn't do much damage directly their icons were buffeting Slug around and making it difficult for him to attack the gauth.

- even with the above though the Twins would have been OK, but the killer blow was when Lug was paralysed by one of the gauth.  I had been thinking that his saving throw would protect him, but carelessly he didn't have any ring of protection and his saving throw of 2 against spells was not good enough.  Without Lug's help and with the problems identified above, Slug was only able to kill 2 of the 3 gauth before picking up a final cause serious fatal wound leaving Lug helpless before the oncoming hordes.

Condolences. I liked the brothers, and I also like the idea of running duos of the same class or kit. Better luck with your next pair.

We DID however one stroke of luck - on a random goblin, it dropped a MAGICAL weapon - mage usable too!

Those goblins have a really varied drop table. I once got a scroll of Simulacum from there. It's one of the reasons why I don't ever install Dungeon-B-Gone.

If I was you I would avoid giving them a fair fight

Best way I've found to not give them a fair fight is with Jan. A big pile of flasher bruiser mates on their spawn point just wrecks them, even Zallanora.

But I only seldomly bother with that. Usually the only arcane spell I bother casting in town is a single Haste in Chapter 6 to kill the Githyanki trying to get their sword back.

Condolences on the loss of the duo, guys! I had high hopes for them.

But congratulations on the loss of Mira, Grond0. Her prices are so kobold!

:D

Yes. Gate70 and Grond0 had one MP success: Pendal and Thimble. That was a great run.

The cool thing about it was that neither of them had successfully no reloaded the trilogy on their own at that point. It may have even been Grond0's first time completing ToB, although I'm not sure.

Grond0 and or Gate may have more to say about it.

Best,

A.

Thanks, Serg. Captain Swarmi was very nearly satisfied with our performance in the Kangaxx fight. If he were to fight the battle again, he would do some things differently, however. Most importantly, he'd switch up the Contingency and the Sequencer.

Had I loaded the Contingency with See Enemy: Spell Deflection and pushed the L3 Protection spells out of the book and into the Sequencer, that would have freed up enough L3s and L6s to allow Arcadia to catch all the Breaches. That, in turn, would have saved a Potion of Magic Shielding. It also would have prevented Arcadia from taking any damage at all in the fight, save a few hitpoints from running through a Kangaxx Cloudkill.

It would have been really nice to have had a Trigger with Spell Shield + Spell Deflection + GoI in it as well. Unfortunately, that wasn't an option for Arcadia since she hadn't (and still hasn't) found a Spell Trigger scroll.

Anyhoo. I'm glad you enjoyed the fight!

Best.

A.

That was indeed the first time I'd completed ToB, so Pendal was really just tagging along behind Thimble.  If you look at our autopsy list you'll see Pendal and Thimble were at number 8 out of our 74 runs to date.  That positioning is not coincidental: our early runs were getting used to each other's style and the significant differences in game play associated with things like inability to pause when desired and lag effects meaning you don't necessarily know where enemies are or when they have hit you.  By number 8 we were pretty sorted on things like that, but still fresh enough to be willing to spend the significant amount of time required to buff a pair of fighter/illusionists.

More recently we're experienced enough that the vast bulk of the game is pretty straight-forward with any variety of characters.  However, we both have a bit of an addiction to risk  and most of our runs end when the odds eventually catch up with us ...

Quick Note on Arcadia's Game:

We have a problem. All the vampires are dead but the door to Bodhi's lair hasn't opened.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

Best,

A.

EDIT: The problem is solved. The issue had been with Tanova. She had been killed, but the engine didn't register it. There is a well known bug wherein if the cloud is killed somehow the vampire associated with it is unstakeable and or not registered as killed for event trigger purposes. Could her Sphere of Chaos, which had been cast when she was alive and red, have killed her cloud? The petrification effect on Sphere of Chaos is flagged "bypass resistances." Or maybe it was simply a death script issue associated with the fact that she had been Smite stunned and taking massive damage at the time she died?

Understood. That appears to be a fix for the Chapter 3 encounter. I was referring to Chapter 6.

Anyhoo: It's solved. Thanks for the effort Matuse!

Here comes Khale, after his rampage through BG1

As so far, he's still in dungeon but a helpful hand will install DBG and he will eventually exit.

I don't want to rush you, but I'm hoping Khale will catch up to Arcadia and Glorydd. It would be cool if we could have a three prong assault on Ascension Mel!

I'm happy to be there.

Tbh, I am kind of rushing him - this is exactly the reason why I usually "take a break" for a week or two before playing again. I want to rush to where my previous protagonist died, and carry on from there. Rushing usually has a bad way of reminding no reloaders of n ways to die in this game....
