Khale, 1st BG2 update

Did Circus, took in Aerie. Visited Graveyard to get Albruin. Did Suna ambush, no problems - Aeirie joined high-enough level to cast Chaotic Commands. Imp.invisibility didn't hurt either.

33_zpsczobe3dl.jpg

Second ambush could have been ugly, with Khale getting held. Aerie to rescue!

34_zpscupubmkk.jpg

Visited WK briefly - Aerie explored under Sanctuary, but very little since Farsight revealed Vampirics. Bought Yamato for Khale.

Now, Umar. Did small quests there. Go to the light, Khale.

35_zpsgl4jobbb.jpg

Took Mazzy. I reconfigured her weapon pips a bit - she won't be using Short Bows, but slings. She killed Shade.

36_zpsi0seqg4t.jpg

Back to city, we get into a really ugly ambush while traveling to Temple to do the bidding of the thieves. Aerie gets disabled and hurt real bad quickly.

37_zpszmmu8rfj.jpg

She eventually died to sequencered Magic missiles. I didn't expect Cone of Cold here...

38_zpsky7eupk6.jpg

Nasty fight, by all means.

Now, Gethras. This was quite a fight as well. We trigger his conversation by saying we're here to kill him. We're rather outspoken.

Now, scatter.

39_zps00qhtn83.jpg

Aerie uses TS, while Khale gets dispelled. That's bad, Aerie has very few spells for now.

40_zpsi00oyefl.jpg

She summons the golem and hides, Mazzy got charmed and is thinking she should kill Aerie.

41_zpsxhmbvvym.jpg

Aerie removes charm from Mazzy, I need her sane here.

42_zpsngyxfifi.jpg

Next, disaster strikes. Rayic summons Ogres, and tosses a Confusion. Both Mazzy and Khale are affected. Aerie has but one Break Enchantment memorized, spending the first to de-charm Mazzy.

43_zps8hgopxje.jpg

She tries to use it on Khale, disrupted. Bad, bad.

44_zpskligfxu1.jpg

Uncotrolable Khale still makes a good fighter, however.

Aerie cast invisibility onto herself.

45_zps5odyjlto.jpg

Now, Khale gets hit by Flame Arrows. Very badly.

I tought this was it. Rayic would add another scalp to his collection. :(

46_zpsxezm2rfw.jpg

Aerie to the rescue! She makes Khale invisible, and eats a Flame Arrow for him, just as Confusion expired. Her MSD eats two of them and she survives long enough to eat one more, then she dies. The final Arrow ends in Khale, but he survives it. Phew...

47_zpsdhyf758q.jpg

Heal up, quickly.

48_zpsikowfa4h.jpg

We kill the Ogre first, and then Mazzy uses her sling and eventually Gethras dies.

49_zpsopyncpqr.jpg

Mae'var was surprisingly easy. One Chaos from Edwin

50_zpsjdyhxe4r.jpg

True Seeing from Aerie so she can target him with some proper spells like Hold Monster, and that was it.

The Arcane Army (update 4)

The Army opened up access to the Unseeing Eye - Rosemary using SI:necro to foil the vampiric mists.  On the way to the temple there were only 3 gauths, so a few skull traps were used rather than the full cloudkill treatment.  At the temple Sage used his Bhaal CLW to heal the Empathic Manifestation.  On the way back up they knocked the chests near Sassar, but failed to learn the lower resistance scroll there.

In the pit the undead had no lich leader, so were easy targets.  The beholder nest should also have been straightforward - using an invisible scout to target damage.  There was a bad moment though when several skull traps were cast at a group of 4 gauth, but only 1 of them seemed to do damage.  As a result their retaliations came close to killing 2 of the Army before they were finished off.  There were no further real scares and the Unseeing Eye was duly rifted and shot before it could retaliate.  The Army quickly returned to the temple to return the ticking bomb rift device, before settling accounts with Gaal.

To finish off their work in the sewers for now the Army went to find Mekrath.  In a throwback to BG1 tactics the mage perished in a magic missile storm, while the cloudkills were kept for a yuan-ti mage and a couple of salamanders.

Next there were a couple of quick diversions.  First to sort out the Fallen Paladins - chaos affecting most of them while Anarg was MMM to death.  Then to solve the skinner murders - a rare occasion there when the Army was over-buffed when the ghasts and Rune Assassins fell within moments and the bone golem never showed.

Then it was time for the Planar Prison. On entry, magic missiles killed the mage Bounty Hunter and the others lasted only a round or so.  Standard tactics with magic missiles, webs and cloudkills took them round to the Master of Thralls.  I was thinking that despite his resistances MMM would kill him pretty quickly and that would have been true except that I hadn't realised how rapidly his death gaze operated.  Within a round 4 of the party were paralysed, while he was only at badly wounded and things looked bad.  It seemed like there might be a reprieve when the Master appeared to be distracted by the skeleton summons and didn't follow on to the main party.  Even so though, his 2 air elementals took a while to kill and Rosemary fell just before they did.  Then the reprieve was shown to be a false one as, before the paralysis lifted, the Master of Thralls appeared from the other direction!  Sage made herself scarce while the others racked up more deaths in one encounter than in the rest of the run to date - the saving grace being that none of them were chunked.

After resting, Sage successfully summoned 3 lesser air elementals and used PFE on those along with haste and II on 2 of them.  Using farsight she was able to watch as the Master was taken down, though the Thrall's desire to have a conversation prevented a good screenshot of that.  Thinking about how she could avoid leaving behind most of the party's equipment Sage released her cat familiar from her backpack for the first time to see if it could pickpocket items. The cat is supposed to have a 30% chance at that, but 40 or so attempts produced no successes against Sage and she gave up on that.

After resting she sent her summons in to support the revolt of the Warden Thralls, but they proved unable to deal with the Warden, so she just stayed out of sight.  After another rest she started off with the aim of sending summons in one by one to get rid of buffs, but that proved to be unnecessary when the first lesser air elemental did the job on the Warden - I don't seem to have a screenshot of that, but he died in just 2 hits so I wonder if he hadn't healed while Sage was resting.  The yuan-ti mage and a single salamander were all that was left then and didn't last long before Sage carried what she could out of there (mistakenly including the piece of red cloth that was no longer needed :().

The Army have now all been put back together and given some new equipment - including purchasing AC3 & AC4 bracers and Robe of Vecna.  With their finances sadly depleted they'll go and visit Trademeet next to look for some easy money.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rosemary, mage 11, 49 HPs, 3 deaths, 370 kills
Parsley, mage 11, 53 HPs, 1 death, 314 kills
Thyme, mage 11, 50 HPs, 2 deaths, 274 kills
Sage (PC), mage 11, 67 HPs (incl. 12 from cat, 6 from ioun stone), 219 kills
Nutmeg, mage 11, 47 HPs, 2 deaths, 227 kills
Pepper, mage 11, 43 HPs, 1 death, 259 kills

Quick Note on Arcadia's Game:

Arcadia has defeated Tree Jon and has nearly completed her hell trials. She'll face Slayer Jon soon.

@Grond0: Grats on escaping that mess of the planar prison - did you at least get haste boots for all that trouble?

Yesterday Glorydd was battling her clone in Spellhold while the inmates were occupying Irenicus. Everything was looking fine. Glorydd was injured but having the upper hand against Fake Glorydd, when a real life intervention (other people) caused Blackraven to direct his attention elsewhere. When he returned, the game told him that his main character had died, and asked him whether he wanted to load or quit.

Obviously something must have gone wrong with pausing the game. I have the game auto-pause each time a member of the party gets badly injured. Perhaps an auto-pause for Glorydd reaching badly injured status and my pressing the space bar coincided without distracted me noticing it.

I've considered allowing myself a reload because this had nothing to do with my gameplay. But I also understand that no-reload is no-reload. I know it's happened to others (Grond0 comes to mind), and they seem to accept the consequences, so I guess so should I. Besides, if I continued, any no-reload trilogy 'success' with Glorydd would be tarnished by this event.

It's not common for me to get far into SoA (I think Glorydd has only been my third character since I started posting here), so I'm quite disappointed. Hopefully some fun with a Cleric/Mage or with a Skald will cheer me up...

Well, I have good news and bad news.

Good news is that I won't be needing CLUA for anything.

Bad news is that Phoe Gyi bit the dust. :(

Elemental Lich did him. Him and Edwin did some spell removal battle, and just as Edwin was casting Pierce Shield to remove his PfMW (and Phoe Gyi killed a Planetar, standing ready for Slow Time), in comes the Comet - kiling unbuffed Phoe Gyi  (he got hit by Remove) instantly. Guess Monks really can't take such ammounts of damage. :(

Think I'll be playing a barbarian next. :D

Hard luck. :(

I have the game auto-pause each time a member of the party gets badly injured.

The problem with this is the game's engine. It checks for that condition every once so often, and sometimes it can take a few real-life seconds for the game to acknowledge that the condition is true. Afaik Enhanced Editions did something about that, but I'm not overly confident.  It's farily similar to Contingecy setting - if you set it at 25% of remaining health, you're very likely gonna end up dead before it triggers. Grond0 should know, iirc.

Fwiw, the one autopause I use is "Enemy sighted". And should I ever come to Ascension or have a mage with Alacrity, "spell cast".

Those work properly.

Khale, 3rd BG2 update

Rather short - we payed of 15k to Thieves, did Slaver's boat (this was an almost magic-less battle - both Edwin and their mage suceeded in dispeling one another and the rest)

52_zpsw3sftzoz.jpg

53_zpstipkx3ph.jpg

Aquired Lirarcor (sold) on route back.

Now, Pooky and Mencar. 2x Chaos made a mess of them. Amon didn't even live long enough to get cofused.

56_zpsmyf86pvt.jpg

Finished first two thieves' missions, but I won't be visiting Graveyard yet. Probably Nalia's keep should be done, Khale is desperate for a +2 or higher enchanted weapon and Foebane is guarded by Vampiric Wraiths - for now, this is out of reach.

P.S.

Condolences about your character, Glorydd.  :(

Khale, 4th and final BG2 update

Khale's greed got the best of him it seems. He decided to fight Vampiric Wraiths in search of a decent bastard sword. The first battle (I say the first, because I exited the area once it was over) saw Mazzy slain. Next, I heal Khale up outside where helmites reside. I enter again, screen flips black, autosave, screen flips black (I hear battle noises and Edwin's screams), screen goes back to normal:

58_zpsnvigxscb.jpg

The mad wizard is dead.

Aerie follows...

59_zpstw0enfgq.jpg

Khale now runs to get those big healing potions from the room. He almost got there, when Mephits struck with lightning attacks...

How did he die so quickly, because of mephits??

Thanks for the lesson here Aasim, No reload is (usually) not for greedy or risky plays...

Hope to see you playing again soon.

Cheers!

@Golden, thanks for your sympathies. It's a cruel fate, I agree, but I feel accepting Glorydd's fall is the right thing to do.

Btw I'll try to past screenshots directly into my posts. (Thing is I tend to use lots of screenshots; wouldn't want my longish posts to become even longer)

@Aasim, am sad to see it's my turn to commiserate with you.
I guess it's aTweaks Mephits for you as well? Nasty buggers... Hope to see you back in action again soon. Maybe with a Dwarven Swashbuckler? I remember you saying you had a really good Dwarven thief portrait somewhere?

@Blackraven.  For what it's worth I agree with that.  In a similar vein one of my mods introduces some armour that is supposed to cast a cure spell on the wearer when they get down to 10% HPs - pretty useless as there is very little chance of that triggering before further damage comes in to kill you.

The obvious solution of course to RL interruptions is to lock yourself in your computer room and never respond to calls :P.

@Aasim.  I had to check for a moment whether you were describing one of my runs .  The combination of vampiric wraiths with multiplying mephits certainly spells risk.  Did you rest before you went back in to WK?  If I'm attempting to force my way in with an underpowered party I tend to do that with the aim of resetting the position of the enemies so they don't attack before the game reorients inside.

Sorry to hear the end of some runs - Ruzzel and his group are still alive. They've reclaimed Athkatla for mage users everywhere - all the mage enforcers are dead, except for Zallnora, who did the same thing as in Grond0's run - she time stopped, gated and then ran away (dimension doored) - we decided to do the same - zone out away from the pit fiend - we aren't ready to do with that kind of thing just yet. A few commoners got caught in our cloudkills, as well as we needed to donate to the Church to get our reputation to 10 (we were at 6). This is in fact the 1st time ever I've defeated all the enforcers and can now cast spells anywhere.

Lol...no, I didn't rest. I was afraid Mazzy's (who was dead already) loot would dissapear. I did drank up quite a few healing potions and barged back in.

Ya, I use those aTweaks Mephits. They die easilly, but can do some decent damage as it seems.

You'll see me back in action soon, yes - but not with a swashbuckler (too little HP for my kind of gameplay :P ).

Yes, I had/have a nice portrait I wanted to use. Here he is (he won't be seeing the light of BG1 any time soon I reckon)

Congratulations on an outstanding run, Blackraven. It was well played and well written, even if it ended too soon.

(And, yes, condolences. But the congratulations should come first, I believe.)

It's a cruel fate, I agree, but I feel accepting Glorydd's fall is the right thing to do.

Agreed. The run has ended. I'm glad you see it that way. And I'm glad you told us. I respect that. We all respect that.

I mourn Glorydd, but at the same time cheers to Blackraven!

Cheers to Blackraven!

Best,

A.

Btw. I guess this means it's skald time? :wizard:

Btw II. I use autopause: see enemy, autopause: spell cast, autopause: hit, autopause: round ended.

(I have to say I saw this one coming. After reading the Suna/Renfield/Gethras post I honestly thought: Khale is running fast and loose; he's going to die; and given Aasim's install, that's going to happen sooner rather than later.)

I feel partially responsible for this one since I encouraged you to catch up.

Looking forward to your next run!

Enrage + Daystar = dead vampiric wraiths. Clearing out most of the top floor of Watcher's Keep is one of the first things I do in each game. It's pretty easy to sneak Daystar out from under the Lich-In-The-Wall.

My understanding is that in SCS the Lich-in-the-Wall is a nasty little lock in, not too be taken lightly. I can't say for ceratin though, since I've never done it.

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Bodhi's Lair

Ok. Arcadia is just about ready to face off with Jon-Jon in hell, but I feel I should do some catch-up posts before finishing SoA. We'll start with Bodhi's Lair. But first, a footnote: Arcadia completed the first two levels of Watcher's Keep, minus the Chromatic Demon. She'll complete the rest after Gromnir. I'll post on Watcher's Keep then.

Anyhoo. Back to Bodhi's Lair. There was a gaggle of vamps in Bodhi's lair.

Welcome? Then where are the free breadsticks?

0U0R8p7.png

While there were oodles of poodles here, there was nothing to threaten Arcadia, other than Cloud of Bats, which sometimes bounced off Spell Turning and sometimes didn't.

xeYXie3.png

It almost looked like Drizzt's crew was going to survive for once...

RdaGmYA.png

but then re-reinforcements came and chowed down.

XUxtXkM.png

Drizzt survived, thanks to a ProU scroll, furnished by Arcadia.

Meanwhile: Where are you Eric, and why are you fighting a fledgling vampire?

Z2dt65V.png

I was tempted to have Arcadia sit back and watch the Tanova fight, just because I thought it would be more interesting, but I dislike recruiting allies and watching them get killed, and I wasn't pleased with the direction the Tanova battle went in.

QiMbNo4.png

You're just going to kill yourself on ProMW + Fireshield: Blue aren't you Drizzt?

dCDeBb4.png

A little intervention helps the vampires go down: Protection from Cold on Drizzt, Breach -> Smite on Tannie.

Y0LVqEl.png

That's better.

RUXtfZR.png

Meanwhile. How you doin' Eric? Still fighting that fledgling vampire? Good for you! Get it, Eric! Get it!

DlgCU5r.png

(Paladins...)

nMlB58k.png

Onto Bodhi. This was totally unremarkable. I had a cool little Captain Swarmi approved showpiece battle plan for this fight, but I forgot about the dialogue mechanics and ended up blowing Arcadia's Improved Alacrity with a misclick. In the end, Bodhi's buds got a Wilting Chain, while she got ages. Ce'st lai vie.

QZStrHP.png

Or in Bodhi's case ce'st la mort.

Z0Y9Y3j.png

Suldanessellar is next.

Best,

A.

Oh no, don't worry. I kind of didn't really get into him. I did roll another barbarian- a halfling one, will post later tonight on his BG1 exploits.

KR Barbarian's Rage doesn't give you immunity to anything, let alone level drain (that has been removed from berserkers as well). Daystar I never even bother getting for some reason...

Lich- in- the -Wall (I like the name, really!!)  locks the door on my install, and you ain't getting out until he's dead. Aha, now I remember why I never get Daystar. 2x2 room with a Lich who is very likely gonna cast Gate. Yup, that's the reason. :D

@ Alesia - wow. I think this Bodhi battle took less time than it does on my "vanilla Bodhi" setup. :)

Thanks everyone for the sympathies and (in Alesia's case) congratulations :)
Thankfully there's still Arcadia, and Grond0's and Corey's mages to keep Irenicus busy... :)

The Skald has indeed recently left Candlekeep, Alesia. Will do a brief introductory post on her in a while.

I concur with Aasim and Alesia on Daystar and the SCS lich guarding it. It's more of a Chapter 6 item for me.
