I suppose that they can't use Biff in BG2 since he has his own role. :D

Yeah. That wouldn't work out too well.

"Umm...You shall suffer? (Is that it?)...Zoom awaits me!...(Oh dear...)"

I've always wondered if anyone killed Melissan when she first showed up, and what that would do...does it just end the game on the spot?

Yup. That's exactly what happens. As soon as she dies, the game is all: roll credits.

Actually, Matuse, I'm not sure what happens. I just snapped the screenie and then quit: Alyssa's Time Stop never ended. I can try it again, if you're curious.

Best,

A.

Ok. The answer is nothing happens. You loot a RoP + 2, and then just stand around with Mel all dead on the steps.

MHUetu0.png

If you go to the temple afterward, Sister Farielle behaves as if nothing happened.

I'm willing to bet that if you were to play it out, Mel would show up in Grominir's throne room as per usual.

Quad multiplayer attempt 2 - (update 4)

Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70

After the long break before the previous session, this time the Quad were back in action after only a day :).

The action started with a trip to Umar temple.  After leading the way through the shadows outside, Corthief briefly recruited Mazzy in order to relieve her of her sword.  The main groups of undead were led by skeleton warriors, which weren't too challenging - Carthus was held by a shadow fiend at one point, but it didn't have time to do too much damage.  With them out of the way there was a brief discussion about the perils of dragon hunting which eventually concluded that tackling Thaxy would be, well, perilous ... and that was left for later.  The Shade Lord though was assaulted and interrupting his first spell allowed the Quad to get him to near death before his buffs triggered.  He still didn't manage to complete any more spells though until the efreeti put him out of his misery.

After collecting Valygar's body and reporting to the mayor the party returned to Athkatla.  Reviewing the available accommodation they decided they would like to upgrade to a private room and told Mencar's group they were being evicted to make room.  They weren't terribly happy about that and put up a fight.  Things went generally well, with Brennan being killed early on, but Carthus did get on the wrong end of a barbarian's sword - fortunately there was a temple next door to put him back together.

The Sphere was opened, but not entered - Gaelan Bayle being paid instead.  At the Docks Aran Linvail provided Corthief with a ring of protection upgrade before the Quad started in on Mae'Var's quests.  Corthief took his life in his hands by pickpocketing the priestesses necklace rather than waiting for night-time- but got away with it.  Back at the Docks it didn't take long to clear Rayic's house - Carthus going downstairs and up again to dodge Rayic's spells before finding a finishing hit on him.  Outside, Sansuki was seeking help - and got it thanks to the vampires being separated enough to be picked off individually.

The remaining tasks were swiftly and simply completed - as was tackling Mae'Var himself.  Static accepted the offer of a guild, although it's not likely to receive much attention in future.  At that stage the Harper HQ was still untouched and it was agreed it was about time that Prebek received a stern talking to - or perhaps something a bit more robust.  After looting the harpers the group watched as Lucette murdered Xzar and a stunning blow from Carthus ensured that he got posthumous revenge.

After upgrading the berserker horn the final action of the session was concentrated in the Bridge District.  First Dracandros and his gang were attacked - that was relatively easy after the mage was one-shotted, although Corthief was warned there by the cowled wizards for using the Ring of Air Control (leading to the payment of an exorbitant fee for a magic license).  Then Corthief raced to confront Parisa and almost overstayed his welcome - ending up with the impressive total of 0 fighter levels.  After recovering at the temple the Quad undertook to end the menace of the Fallen Paladins, which proved pretty easy.  The same could not, however, be said about a further vampire ambush by Tanova and a couple of allies.  Static was the first to be targeted and quickly hared off with one vampire chasing him while Corthief arrived to tank the other 2.  He killed one of them, but his fighting abilities quickly drained away and he was too late trying to retreat from Tanova - and was chunked.  Static and Carthus combined to make the other ordinary vampire retreat - though not before Wewa had been killed by him.  After another temple visit they set a trap for Tanova and she also made a run for it after taking some damage from that.

Although currently a trio, the intention is for Corey to introduce a new character next time - who is likely to need nursing a bit given they will be several levels lower than everyone else.

Stats (cont. from BG1):

Grond0 - Static, fighter 9 / thief 12, 86 HPs, 521 kills

Dogdancing - Wewa, monk 11, 59 HPs, 109 kills, 8 deaths

Gate70 - Carthus, monk 12, 66 HPs (incl. 6 from ioun stone), 265 kills, 6 deaths

corey_russell - Corthief, fighter 9 / thief 12, 92 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 307 kills, 5 deaths (chunked)

Corey rolled up an undead hunter. I hope he doesn't want the weapons/armor/stuff he told me to sell early on, because "no on can use it..." LOL.

Wewa died for no good reason, perhaps she was feeling that Carthus was challenging her for the "winner of the most deaths in a run" title, and wanted to pull ahead.

Yup. That's exactly what happens. As soon as she dies, the game is all: roll credits.

Well, if you ****** of Renal Bloodscalp or Aran Linvail in Chapters 2 & 3, then Arkanis shows up and wipes out the party because you've made it impossible to win anyway. I thought something similar might happen with the untimely demise of Mel.

Makes sense. And that's what I figured you were thinking. :)

But no: no invisible Deathstalkers emerge to avenge Mel. She just gets a quiet death in the town square, while you get an RoP +2.

(Hopefully, nixing Saradush Mel for her RoP + 2 won't become a standard powergamer move.)

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Minor Encounters En Route to the Fire Giant Temple

Ok. Arcadia made virtually no progress today on account of basketball, but I thought I'd quickly cover the minor encounters en route to the fire giant temple. This won't be a particularly thrilling post, but since we've had a slow day today in the BGII thread, I might as well.

If you're a merchant in the Marching Mountains, you don't want one of my characters saving you: you want one of Grond0s. If the question is "Bob the Biffer, can you save me?" the answer is a prompt "Yes I can!" If the question is "Arcadia, can you save me?"the answer is: "Sure. Don't worry. I'll get there. I only have, like, eleven buffs to go..."

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%2012.33.

Took some hitpoints off the infantry with a few Foebane Whirlwinds. This didn't work out that well because Arcadia ran out of people to kill. Most enemies couldn't land against Arcadia's AC. Critical Strikes from the fire giants were countered with ProMWs.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%2012.45.

I'm not sure whether it is Alessandra or Alisa who holds the HP max record amongst my characters. I know they both approached 500. Arcadia hasn't gotten anywhere near there yet. Her middling base HP total and dearth of Whirlwinds are impediments.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%2012.37.

After fun with Foebane, it was time for Arcadia to equip her Black Blade. This was pretty much a disaster for Yaga's army.

Wah!

(Quaint fire giant custom...)

And finally, one last Wah!

I'll add on the more interesting Forest of Mir battles in a moment.

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Minor Encounters En Route to the Fire Giant Temple- Forest of Mir

Quick Forest of Mir coverage. The Wraith Gorion battle was a quicky. The Deadman's Party, not so much- mostly because I forgot that it's actually a fight in my install.

Anyhoo: Wraith Gorion in four easy steps.

Step 1: Pre-Buffs

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.15.4

Step 2: Wilting Chain

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.16.1

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.17.5

Step 3: Breach

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.19.2

Step 4: Beatdown

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.19.2

Up until this point, Arcadia hadn't taken damage in ToB. I think she did in the Deadman's Party fight.

Despite dire warnings from Captain Swarmi, I instructed Arcadia to go straight for the Skeleton Cleric.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.20.0

When the Mage cast Time Stop and started dropping HLA spells, I realized the Captain may have had a point.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.20.1

Time resumed. Arcadia's buffs had prevented the Skeleton Mage from making much progress, but he did bring a Planetar into play to go alongside the Cleric's Deva.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.20.4

ProMW->BBoD Greater Whirlwind took care of the celestial duo.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.22.3

Since slashing weapons and skeletons don't mix, Arcadia pulled back and cast over her BBoD with some MMMs.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.27.2

Ages took down the second Skeleton Warrior

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.28.1

Onto the Mage. A Khleben's was launched to make way for Breach, but that proved unnecessary. Gessen won the day and a wand charge was preserved.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.30.3

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.30.5

Time to finish off that cleric.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-22%20at%203.32.1

I'll post on the Fire Giant Temple soon.

Best,

A.

Diary of the Gnice Gnomes

We headed into the sewers and trounced everything largely due to magical resistances of most of the party. Against the lich true sight, dispell invisibility and pierce magic proved sufficient for a quick battle.

Against the mind flayers, casting improved invisibility, cloudkill, web, and death fog was enough to get them all fighting each other and mopping up was easy presumably because they had no spells left. :) The umber hulks were probably mostly killed by the cloudkill, but some of them got involved in the fights and proved to be useful allies. :D (I don't know exactly what happened and how as it all happened behind closed doors.)

That is a tactic to remember for the future. :)

(Mind Flayers are one of my pet hates.)

A visit to Cromwell has improved our equipment, but left us impoverished.

The Arcane Army (update 7)

Coming back to Athkatla from Windspear the Army went to find some mindflayers.  I wasn't sure whether improved invisibility would help against their attacks, but tried that anyway - without success.  What is more, I had in mind the need to defend against the psionic stun and forgot about the possibility of domination as well.  That made the Army initially rather vulnerable.  However, this time Rosemary's contingency did its job and Thyme was able to make Nutmeg invisible just in time to save him from being sucked to death.  For the final room I was expecting domination and a layered defence meant that caused no concern this time as the illithids were picked off one by one.

I decided it was then time to do a bit of lich hunting.  Normally I use PfU scrolls to do that, but decided that was inappropriate for this party.  They started off with the Elemental Lich.  His mirrors were dispelled with an oracle and he failed to cast under assault from 5 lots of MMM.  The Shade Lich did much better with several triggers and contingencies operating to keep him going for a while.  However, he failed to produce anything really dangerous to threaten the Army with before eventually succumbing to a second casting of MMMs.  The City Gates lich was more akin to the first one - initial mirrors falling to oracle with the lich then unable to handle the stream of MMMs arriving.

Just for the hell of it Sage used the Rod of Terror on the pirates to wrap her charisma round to 25 before going for a rendezvous with Kangaxx.  The intention there was for Rosemary to soak up attacks while the others used MMM from distance.  Thyme was supposed to be the back-up in case anything happened to Rosemary, but I left insufficient space between them and Thyme died from a symbol of, erm, death.  However, Rosemary was then successfully able to occupy the lich while the others shot it down with MMM.  When the demi-lich appeared Rosemary re-cast SI:abjuration to protect her from imprisonment while more MMM from everyone wore Kangaxx down.

With the stock of available spells now depleted, the Army finally got around to paying Gaelan Bayle and went to pick up the goodies from Aran Linvail.  While there, they also reported to Renal to start the Mae'Var quests and quickly worked their way through those.  Rayic's initial attempt to cast true sight was disrupted by MMM and his buffs then stripped by pierce magic and breach to leave him helpless against more MMM.  This time I took no chances against the acid trap :P.

Unsurprisingly, Mae'Var and his merry men didn't perform well against a party of mages attacking ...  After looting both thieves' guilds the Army undertook Aran's tasks - seeing off Lassal and the Guild Contact.  Reporting the latter to Aran took Thyme over the 1.5m XP mark and everyone levelled up to level 14.  Rosemary as being the top character and wearing Vecna and AoP normally gets the pick of the spells and is the only one with anything particularly useful at L7, so tactics are unlikely to change in the near future.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rosemary, mage 14, 52 HPs, 5 deaths, 488 kills
Parsley, mage 14, 56 HPs, 1 death, 405 kills
Thyme, mage 14, 53 HPs, 4 deaths, 369 kills
Sage (PC), mage 14, 70 HPs (incl. 12 from cat, 6 from ioun stone), 297 kills
Nutmeg, mage 14, 50 HPs, 2 deaths, 309 kills
Pepper, mage 14, 46 HPs, 1 death, 376 kills

Unlikely, I'd think. You already get one basically for free in Chapter 3, then City Of Caverns gives you a Cloak +2, and if you have the Gnome-In-The-Docks part of Tactics, there's a second ring available from him. Plus, a lot of the more dedicated powergamers will be going with the same ring combo you are, or will be wearing magical armor that precludes a protection item in the first place.

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Fire Giant Temple Part 1- The Ice Storm of Chaos and Disaster

I always find the opening battle at the Fire Giant Temple fun. It's not dangerous and there's lots of big oafy looking things to chunk. There's plenty of room to goof around and have fun. It's kind of like the ToB equivalent of nixing Nalia's pooches to me- although I tend to have more fun with the puppy-wups.

Anyhoo. Arcadia decided to go with an ice storm of chaos and disaster. It was pretty cool. And by the time it was all over all the giants had been chunked, petrified, or disintegrated save one.

Arcadia entered the temple unbuffed. Her Contingency was See Enemy: ProMW. Her Chain: See Enemy- Sphere of Chaos x 3. As the Contingencies fired, she cast Improved Alacrity and prepared to layer on her buffs, which would include GoI.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.06.5

Into the heart of the action now. Three more Spheres of Chaos and then a Malison.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.08.3

Ice Storm x 3 Sequencer followed by an Ice Storm x 3 Trigger

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.08.5

Time to bring the Disaster.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.09.1

Ok Giants: Let's do this.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.09.3

It was pretty crazy. Tagged with Malison, they'd have to make a save v death or suffer disintegration from the Black Blade of Disaster on each hit, with the hits coming at them at 10 APR. They also had to make 6 saves per round against Sphere of Chaos, including the insta-kill effects. Giants were just blowing up. And they were sleepy. And they were cold. It was a bad day to be a fire giant. Meanwhile, Arcadia was invulnerable.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.09.5

It's hard to cover the action here since giants were just swirling around and dying. Sadly, none of them turned into squirrels.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.09.4

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.11.0

When it was all over, only one giant remained intact.

Screen%20Shot%202015-03-23%20at%202.11.3

Fun stuff. I'll cover the rest of the temple tomorrow- including the double dragon Berenn battle.

Best,

A.

Makes sense. With a party an extra RoP + 2 could be helpful though.

Personally, I wouldn't do it: I wouldn't want to break immersion just for a ring.

The Arcane Army (update 7)

I didn't fancy the Army's chances against the Twisted Rune yet, but thought it would be reasonable to have a go at the Guarded Compound.  After triggering the downstairs encounter Rosemary quickly retreated and waited for the glabrezu to finish off most of the other opponents.  Some summoned elementals then got it to near death before some MMM finished the job after it stunned the final elemental.

Upstairs, Rosemary used a skull trap sequencer.  Koshi died instantly and follow up MMMs killed Sion and Stalman.  To avoid any trap problems the remaining enemies were brought downstairs.  To try and stop her backstabs Ketta received the first successful spook spell of the run - it didn't prevent her either taking more invisibility potions nor backstabbing, but it did slow down her actions somewhat and MMM took effect while she was visible.

Moving on to the Graveyard the Army attacked the vampire HQ.  For once Haz survived - though that meant he had the cheek to take his staff mace with him.  However, one of the Grimward Archers dropped a mordy sword scroll for Nutmeg to learn, so they were off to a good start anyway.  MMMs once more did the bulk of the work there, with even Tanova's stoneskins not surviving long enough for her to complete any spells other than summoning a short-lived simmy.  One of the Grimwards downstairs also had a mordy sword scroll - must have been a buy one, get one free offer :D.  I didn't bother with any summons for Bodhi - she ran away quickly enough anyway.

After travelling straight on to Brynnlaw the Army killed some ambushing vampires and helped Ginia before filling Perth full of (magical missile) holes.  His book was left on spell turning, at least for the moment, as Rosemary is the only one to know that spell currently.  The shop also filled in a few spell gaps.  I don't normally do Galvena, but went there this time to get a bit more XP.

On the way to Spellhold I didn't notice that a vampiric mist had gone invisible rather than dying and Nutmeg annoyingly got level drained.  After sorting that out Sage embarked on a dream of shooting down Bhaal.  She fake-talked the demon in an attempt to avoid losing any stats, but that failed to work this time.

Spellhold should have been fairly easy for the mages.  Level dependent creatures such as umber hulks and greater mummies could easily be squashed, while summons helped out elsewhere - a first use of mordy sword occupying a pit fiend while it was shot down.  However, I was struggling against the tendency to take increased risks and eventually paid for that.  There was one escape when the beholder got rid of summons with a death spell and survived a couple of cloudkills in order to force Thyme to save against petrification before it keeled over.  Then, when fighting a bone golem with standard weapons, I moved Pepper away when his stoneskin evaporated only to be confronted seconds later with a dead Pepper - realising too late that I had moved the wrong character.  On the plus side Pepper had more XP than anyone except Sage, so his loss shouldn't be too costly to the others.  The reduced Army have just entered the second level of Spellhold.

Stats (cont. from BG1):
Rosemary, mage 14, 52 HPs, 5 deaths, 539 kills
Parsley, mage 14, 56 HPs, 1 death, 420 kills
Thyme, mage 14, 53 HPs, 4 deaths, 392  kills
Sage (PC), mage 14, 70 HPs (incl. 12 from cat, 6 from ioun stone), 319 kills
Nutmeg, mage 14, 50 HPs, 2 deaths, 323 kills
Pepper, mage 14, 46 HPs, 2 deaths, 398 kills

Eren the Unbroken, Update BG1. FIRST AND FINAL Update

...
...
Yes you read it correctly.. Eren the Unbroken has most definitely been broken, quite easily I might add.. The first freaking update I put on the bg2 page! (omg lol)....

Im seriously dissapointed and FML right now..

Eren started well enough. A little too well, it seems now.

Irenicus' dungeon was no problem. Circus, no problem. Some thieving, no problem. And then I thought to crush captain Haegan quickly for an extra level right before a dualclass... That was a huge mistake.
We prepared with 2 nymphs and decided to lure all the slavers down the stairs so they would get held or charmed or whatever. Easy peasy. But then a disasterous struggle followed.

Schermafdruk%202015-03-23%2018.15.46_zps

Somehow TWO otyugh got teleported up and down the stairs. I have no clue how, but the one otyugh that we ignored got warped up upstairs and then GOT COPIED BY THE GAME the way downstairs. Look at this screen, there are 2.

I tried it a few more times and after a while there were 4.. I must say this is a bit buggy, but it is also not that unrealistic unfortunately, at least not the first time, as some otyugh might follow their brother after they got the trail. I should have killed it when I had the chance..

That wasnt the only thing that was bad though, the blame is definately on me.. Haegan actually interrupted Jaheiras insect plague (nice AI) and ALL the bandits came rushing down, surrounding us.
Minsc was beating away berserked, but it was Eren that was dying.. why? ---> Because of the confusion with the 2 otyughs, also slowing our team, Eren couldnt/forgot to rage and.. got.. freaking.. HELD. At close distance you also dont see it coming..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-23%2018.51.08_zps

Haegans axe was merciless while he started targeting Eren (SCS AI?). He is a powerful warrior with improved grandmastery as per tweaks, and I wont underestimate this guy again..
Schermafdruk%202015-03-23%2018.51.28_zps

I feel a bit let down, and I feel I let you guys down a bit.. In any case, I have to try this again.
Im planning a whole different character, with lots of roleplaying elements in his build. He will be a ice/electro/poison necromancer with strict rules as what he will and will not cast. I will lay it all out for you guys and will probably need some advice too at the BG1 thread. Should be interesting! Read all about him there.

Cheers!

Creatures can be duplicated when area transitions are made. As a matter of playing style and as a restriction, I avoid area transitions while in combat so I can't comment on this in detail. Grond0 has more experience with this type of situation. I don't recall ever hearing a report of a quadrification.

Haegan and his crew are dangerous in SCS. Haegan's potion stack alone makes him formidable.

The important thing, to my mind, is that you seem to have the right attitude. You've taken it as a lesson learned and remain undaunted. That's good. In my opinion, that makes Eren's run a win, even if his time in Amn was brief. You had fun and you learned something: What more could a player ask for?

Best of luck with your next run.

A.

Sorry to see that Golden. Don't be too hard on yourself. You had a really good run in BG1 and now a death in BG2 caused by dubious conditions. I also have experience with area transitions and enemy duplication, but four Otyughs sounds quite extreme.
I wonder who held you? The Priest of Cyric? Or did you just help me discover that Otyughs can hold their targets (apart from disease and slow)?

I'm pleased to see you eager to try anew, with a different Eren :)

I am sorry too Golden28. I personally rarely use area transitions during combat, partly due to this behavior. I know I took a number of goose-eggs before I finally learned the "gotchas" in BG 2 and then started getting some successes. It might even be worth it to do a BG 2 only no-reload, then when you get a success, restart in BG 2 if you are going for a Trilogy no-reload.

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Minor Encounters En Route to the Fire Giant Temple

After fun with Foebane, it was time for Arcadia to equip her Black Blade. This was pretty much a disaster for Yaga's army.

Wah!

Best,

Holy Smoke.  That is one bad-ass PC!  CKT

:P

Yeah. With her defensive buffs, and with her HP Max upped by Foebane, and with her Black Blade of Disaster, and with Improved Alacrity stacking Critical Strike on Greater Whirlwind, Arcadia can be pretty bad-ass.

But underneath it all, she's just an average half-elf with vanilla items and spells.

My memory is not up to the standard of some posters on this forum I'm afraid.  I think I have seen 1 enemy become 4 before now, albeit by 3 individual duplications - it sounds like yours doubled from 1 to 2 and then 2 to 4.  Certainly I've seen 1 to 2 to 3 on quite a few occasions - that can be a real problem when movement is blocked on both sides of a transition.  Invisibility can work well to get you out of there, so it's worth carrying around a few potions with any character (assuming you're not restricting their use).  If movement is blocked then breaking invisibility to put up something like the berserk warrior and moving them away, while your character goes invisible again, is a possible solution.

@ Golden28.

I have had similar occurences with Karlat and Silke in BG1. I have also seen a post where there were so many duplications that an entire room was filled with the extra spawns. (Not a small room)

However, in my games it worked to my advantage as I was able to defeat them. The extra equipment and experience came in useful.

Sorry that it brought an end to your game. :(
