I doubt it. You are much better with arcane magic than I am. A lot of the spells you used against Melissan, I have yet to use once for example (such as Tensor's). But they will give it a shot regardless...
Also, Sage has been entered into the Hall of Heroes.
@Golden28: That was indeed a disaster - good work to persevere.
Nice story Golden28 - hope the stocks of NPCs last out for you!
BG2 Eren the 'Fair' Episode 2: A gruesome fate.
LOL.....
Marvelous stuff! I mean, apart the chunkings and all.
The line Eren says in the last screen "I will strive to lead responsibly".....
epic...
Quick Note on Arcadia's Game:
Arcadia has defeated Sendai, and is nearly ready for her meeting with Balthazar.

I'll post on the Sendai battle soon.
Best,
A.
@Golden28. Wow! There's definitely no shortage of drama in your runs. I'm glad Eren made it!

Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Minor Encounters in Sendai's Enclave
Ok. Before posting the Sendai fight, I thought I'd quickly cover the minor encounters in Sendai's Enclave for the benefit of the infinitely curious or infinitely bored.
In the Woodcutter fight, Arcadia got her second 92 hit point critical. Once she gets Draw on Holy Might, she may be able to reach triple digits.
Arcadia considered using a septuple Sunfire in the Thelynn'ss battle, but she ultimately went with her standard Black Blade of Disaster buffed melee approach.
It's been a long time since I've fought through Sendai's pets. I was surprised by a couple of things.I don't recall Lashar'ra having a heal. I also didn't expect to hear SoA Battle Score Two here. I found that disorienting.
Arcadia opened her battle with Odamaron by casting Improved Alacrity. She then filled in her buffs, cast True Sight, and launched an attack on the Lich's magical defenses using Ruby Ray->Warding Whip.
Odamaron got off a Time Stop, but it passed uneventfully on account of Arcadia's buffs.
And when time resumed, Arcadia's debuff spells reached their target. A Power Word: Blind followed, then a Breach.
Sling of Seeking finish.
Having no desire to play with the Hive Mother, Arcadia went for a quick knock-out in the Diaytha fight. An pre-buff Improved Alacrity was followed by an immediate Time Stop. Arcadia then positioned herself in front of the Hive Mother and activated a Sunfire x 3 Spell Trigger, which, in turn, would activate a Chain Contingency: Hit- Sunfire x 3 and a Contingency: Hit- Sunfire. The Hive Mother also caught a Foebane GWW/Critical Strike as extra insurance. To top it off, a Skull Trap x 3 Sequencer was thrown in.
Only the fire resistant creatures survived.
They were quickly taken down with Foebane.
I'll post on the Sendai fight soon.
Best,

Arcadia v. Sendai (or Why Spell Immunity: Abjuration is Captain's Swarmi's Favorite Spell)
Captain Swarmi loves Spell Shield. But there is one spell that he loves more: Spell Immunity: Abjuration. Against Sendai's statues, Arcadia fought without Spell Immunity: Abjuration in the interest of spell slot economy. That led to hardship. Both the Captain and Arcadia were ever grateful when the fall of the last statue ushered in the return of their favorite incantation.
Against the statues, Arcadia fought more like a fighter than an F/M. She took some spell protections through Contingencies (SI:A, SI:D, Spell Deflection, Spell Shield) at the very beginning of the fight, and she also pre-buffed with protection scrolls and potions, but she left her spell book largely untapped throughout the statue phase to facilitate a full buff assault on the real Sendai in the endgame. That worked, but it ended up making some of the statue battles more interesting than the Captain would have liked.
The plan had been to finish Cleric Sendai quickly so that the contingencied spell protections would last through the first mage battle. But Cleric Sendai had different plans: a savvy and improbable Sanctuary cast permitted her to extend the battle just long enough to force Arcadia on the defensive against Mage Sendai.
Here we see the fall of Cleric Sendai.
And then the arrival of Mage Sendai. As you can see, Mage Sendai took her buffs and then quickly summoned a demon. That was followed by a Time Stop and yet more demon summoning.
Arcadia dispatched the demons with ease.
But the melee fighting took just long enough to insure that Arcadia's Spell Immunities would run out during Mage Sendai's second Time Stop. Since Arcadia was still running comprehensive specific protections at that point, Sendai couldn't hope to damage Arcadia during her Time Stop, but she did release one crucial spell: Remove Magic.
Arcadia, as an F/M, is highly vulnerable to Remove Magic in the absence of Spell Immunity: Abjuration. Without Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Arcadia is transformed from a invincible juggernaut into just another vulnerable Half-Elf. The transformation occurred as soon as the Remove hit.
Arcadia -who had been making progress on the ProMW Mage Sendai's Stoneksins with unenchanted dart- immediately countered with a Potion of Invisibility. She then layered on a Potion of Fire Resistance and an MSD. With a Potion of Magic of Shielding at the ready, Arcadia felt prepared to resume her attack attack on Mage Sendai's Stoneskins. Cleverly, Mage Sendai countered with an Absolute Immunity, forcing Arcadia back into hiding.
An Oracle reveal Arcadia, but another Potion of Invisibility quaff allowed Arcadia to hide for the duration of Mage Sendai's Absolute Immunity.
When the time was right, Arcadia broke invisibility with a Dispelling Arrow.
She then went to work with Gessen, but was unable to disrupt a key spell: a second Remove Magic, which took out Arcadia's Potion of Fire Resistance amongst other buffs. With an Efreeti in play -not to mention the possibility of a Comet or a Dragon's Breath in Mage Sendai's book- Arcadia was vulnerable once again. She was forced into hiding.
After rebullding her fire resistance, Arcadia resumed her assault only to be confronted with a Chain Lighting Trigger. A Potion of Absorption quashed that threat just in time.
With her book largely tapped, and with Arcadia's MSD in place to foil what spells remained, Mage Sendai decided to go into hiding. Mr. Efreeti helped lure her out, setting up the finish with Gessen.
Defeating Mage Sendai without using her spell slots or consuming Breaching wand charges was a major coo for Arcadia. She was now nearly guaranteed to have the upper hand against the real Sendai. There where still challenges to come, however.
The Kensai->Thief proved tricky, largely because of the presence of casters: a well scripted Drow mage, and a pair of summoned Efreetis.
Repeated Removes took down Arcadia's Stoneskins, exposing her to potentially dangerous backstabs from the Potion of Invisibility quaffing Kensai->Thief. The Gargoyle Boots kept Arcadia safe, although she did take damage in this round.
While Cleric Sendai had made a nuisance of herself by lingering too long, Berserker Sendai made Arcadia's life more difficult by exiting too fast. Arcadia had deliberately refrained from killing Berserker Sendai at first so that she could finish off the lackey drow before C/M Sendai's arrival. Unfortunately, Arcadia left Berseker Sendai with less than 15 hitpoints. And when Berserker Sendai's berserker state ended, Aradia was forced to fight C/M Sendai with a drow mage, three drow warriors, and two efreetis on the field. This was far from ideal.
Happily, Arcadia dispatched the summons and lackey drow before C/M Sendai could get into the fray. And by the time C/M Sendai and Arcadia did finally meet, C/M Sendai's ProMW had worn off, leaving her vulnerable to a Dispelling Arrow.
A ProMW quick cast helped keep C/M Sendai in the game long enough to get a Wilting off, but by now Arcadia felt free to use some of her spells. Pro Energy foiled the Wilting.
Ultimately, unenchanted darts finished C/M Sendai while a Staff of Air Air Elemental looked on.
Archer Sendai went quietly. And Assassin Sendai was harmless enough that Arcadia was free to start layering on her non-zero casting time long duration buffs.
Just before Assassin Sendai fell, Arcadia cast Improved Alacrity and filled out her buffs. Captain Swarmi was thrilled: Spell Immunity: Abjuration was back! Hooray! That essentially spelled the end for Sendai: she could have no hope of victory against a full buffed Arcadia.
Sendai took her buffs and fired off a Chain, which included a Deva. The Deva fell to ProMW + Black Blade of Disaster.
A Fallen Planetar summoned during a Time Stop met a similar fate.
With the celestials our of play and with Arcadia's buffs protecting her from Sendai's debuff spells, Arcadia was free to go on the offensive. Ruby Rays were launched first to pave the way for Breach.
ProMW quick casts and a Heal contingency would force Arcadia to use Breach multiple times, but Sendai never had a chance to go on the offensive after the first Breach. The Black Blade of Disaster finished her.
Fin!
Arcadia should finish up her Pocket Plane Challenges this evening. She'll start the Throne battles tomorrow.
Best,
A.
Arcadia "v" Balthazar (Or Soft Power)
NW: This is very nearly a repost of an update form Alyssa's run. I thought I'd share it, nonetheless, for the benefit of those who have never seen it.
Players often talk about routes to endgame power in Ascension. There are lots of good answers. The best answer that you never hear is Wisdom, Charisma, Reputation, Shields, and Slings.
As many know, Balthazar is available as an ally in Ascension. Wisdom, Charisma, and Reputation are what get him.
For the curious...
Arcadia's character record before the encounter (note that her reputation is 20, her Wisdom is 19, and her unmodified Charisma is 16).

And here are a few of the dialog panels, most behind spoiler tags.
For a neutral character, after the initial dialog.
Fighting alongside Balthy is fun. It's one of my favorite parts of Ascension.

A.
Arcadia v The Ravager (or Why F/Ms Know How to Party)
Most of my characters take down the Ravager with range weapons. He's easy to kill that way. My solo Transmuter, who lacked Pierce Magic and Pierce Shield, was even able to take him down with a sling. It required no reloads and she took few injuries.
Those who prefer to fight the Ravager in melee often have a less pleasant experience. Given his THAC0, AC, damaging weapon, and on hit effects, the Ravager can in fact ravage many melee warriors. As an F/M -blessed with GWW, Critical Strike, Black Blade of Disaster and ProMW- Arcadia was well positioned to fight the Ravager in toe-to-toe melee. She did. And she prevailed. She took no injuries. He lasted about four rounds. By partying with an F/M, an adventurer can save his or her companions a whole lot of pain and grief.
Arcadia entered the arena with a Chain set to See Enemy- ProMW, Improved Haste, Improved Invisibility. When her Chain fired, she cast Improved Alacrity and then took additional buffs, though those proved unnecessary. A trio of Mordy Swords were summoned to keep the Bone Blades occupied and then Arcadia moved into position. Once there, she took a Black Blade of Disaster, activated Greater Whirlwind and Critical Strike, and, finally, cast Bhaalspawn power Draw on Holy Might. She then went to work.
The Black Blade of Disaster did solid damage. In the first two rounds, during which Arcadia ran GWW + Critical Strike, he took about 400hp of damage.
The ProMW was refreshed a touch early to insure that the Ravager would never get a window to hit Arcadia. The opening ProMW was still active in this shot.
Fin.

A.
Btw. The Chosen of Cyric encounter was kind of bizarre. Arcadia had laid down a sextuple Sphere of Chaos and had tagged the Chosen with Malison. I was shocked when the first swing of the Black Blade of Disaster ended the encounter. The target has been disintegrated and apparently all the other chosen were insta-killed by the Sphere of Chaos at about the same time. Only a few seconds elapsed between the two screenshots.
Congrats Grond0! Your arcane army (ie you) were unstoppable. Impressive to say the least.
Go Alesia! Arcadia's looking strong... or should I say Captain Swarmi's coaching has netted results?
Congrats Grond0! Your arcane army (ie you) were unstoppable.
Thanks B_V. They might not have been stopped, but they were a long way from unstoppable
. For instance:
- I took a conscious decision to not fully buff them against death effects, so Sage was nearly always vulnerable to a Wail of the Banshee (though I gave her a standard saving throw of 2, so she had a good chance in any individual encounter).
- most of the Army never used protections against area damage. The exceptions were specific protection against dragon's breath and, in the later stages of ToB, protection against magic energy to allow them to throw skull traps indiscriminately. Rosemary as the lead character often had other protections as well, but mistakes in movement could easily have resulted in large numbers of casualties and chunking (note that approach would not have been possible against the improved AI offered by SCS).
Best of luck with your shadowdancer - looks like an interesting concept.
Arcadia v Ascension Irenicus (Or Goodbye, Dear Friends)
Arcadia triumphed in her first battle at the Throne. But her victory came at a cost. She lost two dear friends: one old, one new.
First, a little background for those unfamiliar with Ascension. The opening battle features a rematch with Irenicus and Bodhi. Both are substantially more powerful than their SoA incarnations and are worthy ToB foes. Irenicus typically Chains a Simulacrum and a unique Projected Image, which allows him to fight alongside it. He's tough. Bodhi, meanwhile, enjoys a massive regeneration rate as well as the ability to transform into a invulnerable bat. She can be hard to kill. On top of three Irenicuses (one real, two illusionary) and an amped up Bodhi, the PC faces two Fallen Solars and a Slayer -Slayer Imoen to be precise. Melissan transforms Imoen into a Slayer and compels her to fight., though Imoen will change back to herself and leave after a couple turns- if she lives that is. My character typically try to keep Imoen alive. That isn't always possible.
Ok. Preparations. Arcadia prepped for the fight with a slighly enhanced buff regiment and a special purpose Trigger/Contingecy setup. The buffs were Potion of Mind Focusing, Potion of Invulnerability, Oil of Speed, Stoneskins, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Magical Energy, Protection from Evil, Blur, Mirror Image, Improved Invisibility, Improved Haste, Protection from Energy, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Spell Immunity: Conjuration, and Spell Immunity: Enchantment. The Trigger was Sunfire x 3. The Contingency was Hit- Sunfire. The Chain was Hit Sunfire x 3. Arcadia buffed by casting Improved Alacrity and then casting all of her spells. She then used Wish to refill her spell book. This took two tries. Finally, she layered in her potion buffs and entered the Throne.
This is Arcadia's character record at the start of the battle. Note that her AC is 2 points higher (worse) than usual despite the fact that she is affected by a Potion of Mind Focusing and a Potion of Invulnerability. That's because she has the Reflex in her offhand, rather than the Shield of the Order. The Reflex is key.
Here is the battlefield. Irenicus and Bodhi and one Solar to the west, with Slayer Imoen on top of the PC.
The second Solar is to the east.
Arcadia opened by pulling her Sunfire x 3 trigger with the understanding that that would set off her Sunfire x 3 Chain and her single Sunfire Contingency. That move wiped out Bodhi, Simulacrum Irenicus, Projected Image Irenicus, and one Fallen Solar.
The real Irenicus emerged unscathed. Balthazar and Imoen were both hurt but survived.
Arcadia's main concern at this point was keeping Balthazar alive. The Fallen Solar's arrows vorpal with a save v death allowed at -2. Balthazar is highly vulnerable to the solar arrows. He sometimes dies within seconds. Balthazar is essentially uncontrollable, however. This would prove to be his undoing, but he did linger long enough to cause some unwelcome havoc.
Shortly after Arcadia's opening Irenicus withdrew to the north. Balthazar pursued. Arcadia readied an Imprisonment scroll, with the intention of Imprisoning Balthazar and then freeing him when the vorpal threats were out of play.
Balthazar didn't like that plan. He had no desire to journey to the center of Faerun. He activated Faster than the Eye- effectively Dimension Dooring away. No! Where are you going! Where are you going!
Oh. To kill Imoen. Bummer. Goodbye, old friend ![]()
Meanwhile, Irenicus readied a Time Stop. Arcadia, hearing praeses, quaffed a Potion of Invisibility. Balthazar's Lunar Stance permitted him to fight on.
Shortly after the Time Stop, Irenicus unleashed a Dragon's Breath. Arcadia was immune, but Balthazar was injured.
Irenicus's second Time Stop was once again evaded by Arcadia via a Potion of Invisibility.
At the end of the Time Stop, Irenicus detected the expiration of Arcadia's Spell Immunity: Abjuration. He immediately released a Remove Magic x 3 Sequencer. Arcadia had a Spell Immunity: Abjuration recast at the ready, but a misclick at the moment of school selection caused the spell to be wasted. Arcadia was debuffed. She was vulnerable. Captain Swarmi was furious. But thanks to Improved Alacrity, Arcadia was able to rebuff fully before she could be hurt. Balthazar took beating while Arcadia was rebuffing, however. Getting Balthazar out of harm's way became imperative.
Arcadia targeted Balthazar with Imprisonment. But just as the effect was about to take hold, he activated Lunar Stance, which grants immunity. ![]()
I enjoy fighting with Balthazar but most of the time he's more trouble than he's worth.
Ok. Whatever Balthy. If you want to get yourself killed, I guess there's nothing I can do about it. I'm just going to kill Jon-Jon. If you want to help, fine: do whatever you can.
A dispelling arrow got Jon-Jon started.
Balthazar contributed blindness via Malison + Glitterdust.
The Asp's Nest shutdown Jon's casting...
and ultimately finished him.
Just the solar left now- the Solar which miraculously hadn't vorpalled Balthazar yet. And with it already Badly Injured, a Seeking Whirlwind would finish it for sure. We're going to make it Balthy!
The Seeking Whirlwind worked.
But wait: Did you notice something in that picture? The ghost near Arcadia? Yeah. The Solar's last arrow vorpalled Balthazar. I couldn't believe it. The sling bullet was in the air when Balthazar fell. Goodbye, new friend. ![]()
So, yeah. Balthazar hung around just long enough to kill Imoen, then he got himself killed. Not exactly a fruitful partnership. In retrospect, I should have had Arcadia invest a ProMW in killing the second Solar immediately. Lesson learned.
I'll post on the Demon Battles and the Final Confrontation tomorrow.
Best,
A.
Epic stuff Alesia!
Cheers!
Arcadia, Half-Elven Fighter/Mage: Demon Battle 1
Arcadia has completed Demon Battle 1, mostly without incident. The Demon Battles, while potentially dangerous, should be pretty straightforward for Arcadia. I've decided to post on one -or perhaps two - or perhaps all of them, nonetheless, partly for the benefit of the ATweaks SCS/Ascension players who might like a refresher on the roster of demons that appear at the Throne.
I didn't really get a good shot of the demons at the start of combat. Basically, there is a Balor, a Marilith, a Glabrezu, and a Nabassu. There's also a Succubus, a couple of Alu-Fiends, a Cambion, and a backstabbing Babau. I think that pretty much covers it.
In my install, there are basically two threats here: Implosion from the Balor and Power Word: Stun from Glabrezu. Both can be stopped by Spell Deflection, but the Alu-Fiends cast Secret Word. Arcadia's approach was to take down the Balor first, and then nix the Alu-Fiends, while being sure to refresh Spell Deflection if a Secret Word landed.
Arcadia chose to fight in melee with a Black Blade of Disaster cast from scroll. A Breach from a Wand of Spell Striking set the Balor up for the kill.
Arcadia did take damage in this encounter when a Babau unexpectedly landed a critical backstab just after Arcadia's last Stoneskin had been peeled. Spell Deflection was in place to prevent Power Word: Stun.
After refreshing her Stoneskins, Arcadia nixed the Nabassu. Shortly thereafter, an Alu-Fiend landed a Secret Word that was countered with a Spell Deflection recast. The Alu Fiends were killed next.
The lesser demons were then nixed in turn then the Glabrezu fell.
Finally, the Marilith, who was disintegrated through her Stoneskins by the BBoD, near the corpses of Balthazar and Imoen.
I'll post on Demon Battles 2 & 3 later today.
Best,
A.
Arcadia's looking strong... or should I say Captain Swarmi's coaching has netted results?
All of the above: they're a team. Arcadia deserves most of the credit though. She's the hero.
Best,
A.
Eren the 'Fair' 3rd and Final update ![]()
Basically I hadnt played BG2 for a while and I thought that was the entrance to the inn with the mercenaries... Wrong! .. I ALSO forgot there was a turn to stone trap there.. Next time I will always put someone else in the front thats for sure.
I tried 10 more times, Eren saved vs death 9 times after that...
I think this challenge is too hard for me, the dissapointment is sky high..
Nuff said...
I need a break...
Cheers.. GL28
@Golden28 - tough break there. If it's any consolation, many no-reloaders have ended their runs to that trap, some even more than once! It's just one of those "gotchas" that you need to remember for your next run. It's always a good idea to let party members open doors and chests if you have them - better them than you.
Good stuff Alesia. I doubt aTweaks would mix Baatezu and Tanar'ri, but it remains to be seen - maybe Ascension would turn into a Blood War! ![]()
GL finishing the job.
@ Golden - there's no reason to be dissapointed. I think everybody here had his share of stupid deaths - it's just how BG2 is.
Hard luck Golden28. There were some impressive backstabs from Eren there - I hope to see more soon. ![]()
Condolences Golden.
Don't take it too hard. Every player in the Hall of Heroes has something in common: we've all failed more times than we've succeeded. Game knowledge, persistence, and concentration are keys to success in no reload play, but resilience -and the ability to shake off failures with a grin- is equally important. Know that if you lose a character, it is really just part of the process of gaining knowledge and experience: it's just part of the game. And know that when one of your characters falls, we, as a community, are with you 100%. There is no shame in defeat, no judgement or critique. Just a simple wish from all of us that your next run will be the one.
I hope you'll stick with it Golden! We enjoy having you here.
Best,
A.
Good stuff Alesia. GL finishing the job.
Thanks. I'm guessing Arcadia's run has been boring to some since she has steamrolled through almost every encounter, but the final battle at the Throne will, in fact, be a challenge. She won't be an invulnerable tank in that fight. She'll be something different entirely. I hope she'll pull through.
Good stuff Alesia. I doubt aTweaks would mix Baatezu and Tanar'ri, but it remains to be seen - maybe Ascension would turn into a Blood War!
GL finishing the job.
Does aTweaks change the creatures that appear on maps and is it coded to affect the Ascension demon battles in particular, or does it just update the CRE files of the demons? If it's the latter, then you could very well see a mix. That would be a problem, of course, since as you implied, the Baatezu and Tanar'ri are coded to fight with one another.
The read me indicates that most mod-added fiends are largely unaffected by aTweaks, SCS being the only current exception. Perhaps the Throne battles will be largely unchanged then? Unclear since SCS does affect the Ascension demons.
Anyhoo. I'm curious to see how it plays out. Hopefully you'll end up with something other than a broken fight with waring demons...
Best,
A.
