@Epsil0, you're right. I remember now. Never had any real problems there though. Very unfortunate to see Alac fall there...

Yes. That's why it gets people sometimes. Players expect Cloudkill damage but they get Incendiary Cloud.
Anyhoo, Condolences Grond0. It's a shame to see Alac fall.

Ariel, Halfling F/T: BG2 Update 8- Torgal
Before swinging by the Planar Sphere, Ariel paid a visit to an old friend: Torgal. Ok. Torgal isn't really an old friend. Ariel has never met him. And he's kind of a jerk. But Ariel stopped by to see him nonetheless. She's giving like that. She'll got out of her way to kill you even if she hasn't met you.
This was a fun fight. Torgal can be separated from his cronies by taking advantage of his ability to detect the invisible via script. I used to do that, but it alway felt lame. Fighting him and his buds together is far more satisfying.
Buffed with Potion of Heroism, Potion of Clarity, Potion of Regeneration, Oil of Speed, Potion of Frost Giant Strength, DUHM and RoAC II, Ariel engaged Torgal. Her RoAC II was dispelled by one of the yuan-ti mages, however, creating an opening for Stinking Cloud. Ariel quashed that threat with a Potion of Invulnerability. And when a Remove magic failed to take down Ariel's potions, she was assured disabler protection from the remainder of the fight.
Fighting within the Stinking Cloud proved advantageous, since it neutralized some of Torgal's buds. Before long, Ages and Blem had felled the stinky-sniffer, but finishing him proved more difficult than expected. Expecting a single hitpoint of fire damage to do the deed, Ariel was soon cruelly disappointed. Torgal got back on his feet, and Ariel was forced to flee.
After healing, Ariel used a combination of backstabs and choke-point melee stands to whittle down Torgal's crew.
Eventually, just Torgal and the yuan ti mages remained. With the yuan-ti mages apparently stumped by Shield + Potion of Invulnerability, Ariel was free to bring Torgal down once again with Ages + Belm. And this time, Ariel invested a Potion of Firebreath in his destructon. The stinky-sniffer was no more.
Detect Illusion and Everard's Morning Star + Belm finished the mages.
Ariel is currently making her way through the Planar Sphere. I'll post again when she has completed the quest.
Best,
A.

Ariel, Halfling F/T: BG2 Update 9- The Planar Sphere (Part 1)
It looks like I'm not going to have time to finish the Planar Sphere in this session. In the interest of keep Ariel up to date, I'll just post on the first half of the quest.
So far Ariel's time in the Planar Sphere has impressed upon me why I don't really want to run a Halfling F/T right now. They're just so hard to stop.
Case in point: the Hungry Hungry Halflings.
Togan was nixed with a staff of striking backstab before he could warn his bretheren.
Entu was insta-killed by staff of striking backstab->Potion of Firebreath.
That same Potion of Firebreath was used to take Mogadish down to badly injured before he could get his buffs up. A follow up melee barrage from Kachiko's + Belm finished him.
Kayardi got off a Flame Arrow x 3 Sequencer, but Ariel equipped the Reflex before the arrows could land.
After taking some damage from MMMs and equipping Arvoreen to protect against PW:S, Ariel finished the mage with Arrow of Dispelling-> Kachiko's backstab.
Tabiela and Necre were repeatedly revealed with Detect Illusions and then stunned with Darts of Stunning. They were peeled and chunked without having taken meaningful offensive actions.
Lavok then discovered that what took him ages to learn was totally fracking useless.
After setting four traps, Ariel approached hidden in shadows and launched an arrow of dispelling.
Returning to the shadows lured Lavok to the traps. His poison immunity saved him from a truly undignified death, but the trap damage consumed his healing.
Hidden in shadows, Ariel waited out Lavok's Improved Mantle. Once it expired, she landed a staff of striking backstab.
Lavok's Contingency: ProMW elicited Potion of Invisibility->unenchanted scimitar backstab from Ariel. Lavok shrewdly countered by bursting into tears and giving up.
I'll post on the second half of the quest later this evening.
Best,
A.

Ariel, Halfling F/T: BG2 Update 10- The Planar Sphere (Part 2)
Ariel has completed the Planar Sphere quest and entered HLA-ville. Now with UAI and Hardiness, she is ready to take on Bodhi's guild.
The second half of the Planar Sphere was largely uneventuful. A Potion of Invulnerability and 100% fire resistance via Potion of Fire Resistance + Dragon Scale + Dragon Helm kept Ariel safe against the Tanar'ri, though Vampiric Touch was a nuisance even with the BoIB.
Tolgerias had the satisfaction of consuming a Staff of Striking charge and Ariel's last Potion of Firebreath. That was the only satisfaction he would get.
His sidekick fell to elemental arrows, having landed only a MMA and some MMMs.
All that remained was to punk the golems and jump her ride. That she did.
Having lifted every Potion of Defense in Athkatla, Ariel is now in a position to pair 85% physical resistance with a solid AC and a base APR of 5. She should be a substantial toe-to-toe warrior from this point on- especially once she gets Foebane.
Ariel will battle Bodhi's Guild soon.
Best,
A.

Ariel, Halfling F/T: BG2 Update 11- Draug Fea and Co
Having gotten UAI and Hardiness, Ariel decided to test out her toe-to-toe melee prowess against Draug Fea and Co. The early results look promising.
With the Defender of Easthaven in the off-hand, Jan Jansen's Adventurewear in the armor slot, the BoIB in the belt slot, and Hardiness active, Ariel now enjoys 85% resistance to slashing, crushing and piercing damage along with 90% resistance to missle damage. Placing the Scarlet Ninja To in her mainhand gets her APR to 9/2. That makes her a formidible toe-to-toe warrior at this stage of the game.
Prior to fighting Draug Fea and Co, Ariel buffed with a Potion of Stone Giant Strength, RoAC II, and DUHM. She set four traps pre-battle, but none of them were used.
An opening backstab with Wachiko's took out Dr. Baltar.
Rather than returning to the shadows, Ariel chose to fight in toe-to-toe melee. She never disengaged and took no healing, save a late Bhaalspawn power Cure Light Wounds.
Draug Fea was the first warrior to fall.
He and his comrades found that they could hit Ariel but that they couldn't do much damage when they did, even after having quaffed exceptional strength potions.
The two clerics were next, followed by Tarnor and the summoned aerial servant. Note that Ariel essentially didn't move throughout the fight: she just took on all comers.
Having outlasted Hardiness, Gallchobhair had a chance to do significant damage at the end, but he fell before he could make much progress. Ariel looks forward to getting a second casting of Hardiness.
I suspect that at this stage of the game (~3M XP in SoA) Seguro will often be a more effective toe-to-toe melee fighter than Ariel. However, because of her resistances, a string of criticals is no threat to Ariel, whereas it could be to Seguro. On the otherhand, stat draining enemies should be more of a threat to Ariel. However you look at it, they should both be excellent warriors.
Best,
A.

A lich is a 25th level mage, so would have only 4 8th level spells by standard - not sure whether the extra is due to being coded as a specialist mage (presumably necromancer!) or an innate bonus......................
ffected by dragon fear (presumably that's coded as non-magical) ...
If he's not under any Illusion buffs, he's a Necromancer, yes.
Dragon Fear is a non-magical ability cast via script. I'm not sure what's the save penalty, but there is one since even a save vs spells of 1 will make you fail it fairly often. Do you find that sword so useful to enter the damn room?

Same here....I skip that and Twisted Rune. There's too many Liches in BG2 as it is.

Seguro didn't really want the sword - I was just checking to see if it would be possible for another character to go in and liberate it without attracting the notice of the lich. You might of course argue that that sort of thing should be checked outside a no-reload run, but I'm not very good at doing that ...

Quad multiplayer attempt 2 - (update 7)
Grond0, Dogdancing, corey_russell, Gate70
Today's session saw the Quad making a bit more progress without any more deaths - though there were a few nasty moments.
They started off with an assault on the Planar Prison. On arrival the mage started casting a true sight, but a backstab ensured he didn't finish it. Static handed out that lesson, but also took a fairly painful backstab himself in return and did a bit of running round while the remaining Bounty Hunters were finished off.
Moving round the area Avenger came across a group of umber hulks. That resulted in him being confused and attacking Wewa. Her icon's position was displaced on her screen compared to the rest of us. In combination with the boots of speed that Avenger had just put on, that made it hard for Wewa to get away - but she did just manage to keep her distance after almost being killed here.
Summons were brought out to join in the assault on the Master of Thralls and he was quickly overwhelmed.
After a rest the summons joined in again against the Warden, but they lost out against more umber hulks. Avenger was confused once more and he ran off chased by the Warden, but even confused Carsomyr makes him a formidable opponent and the Warden's mirrors were dispelled before he was chopped down.
Avenger also killed Taggett, but he was apparently less of an innocent than he seemed as the party didn't suffer a reputation loss there.
Next we decided it was about time to get the Ring of Gaxx. Everyone was protected by PfU scrolls to take down first the Elemental Lich, then the Shade Lich. Static used an oil of speed to help him to keep up with the others while running round on the way to Kangaxx in order to ensure the scrolls didn't run out. After killing Kangaxx' lich form the demi-lich was hemmed in by Carthus and Static. That proved to be a good idea when Kangaxx tried to run - but couldn't escape Carsomyr.
There was still enough time left on the scrolls to go to the City Gates and complete a clean sweep of the liches.
The final action of the day was to get underway on the main quest. Mook was avenged before they went to sort out the Guild Contact. Killing him quickly is helpful to ensure he doesn't use the 2 invulnerability potions he carries and a backstab did the job.
Stats (cont. from BG1):
Grond0 - Static, fighter 10 / thief 13, 88 HPs, 616 kills
Dogdancing - Wewa, monk 14, 65 HPs, 134 kills, 10 deaths
Gate70 - Carthus, monk 14, 75 HPs (incl. 6 from ioun stone), 378 kills, 6 deaths
corey_russell - Avenger, undead hunter 10, 108 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 130 kills, 0 deaths

Multiplayer is host-friendly in that regard;
- You quite often see a client hit twice then a host hit in the same round. Host damage gets applied first and the client damage is ignored.
- When a client drops from the game their kills since the last save can be lost. Dogdancing crashes most; at least once per session, usually more. Same for XP - Carthus was some way ahead of Wewa with xp and is now behind her after a crash which must have been during an area with plenty to do.
That's not to say Grond0 wouldn't be ahead anyway, and we haven't looked to see if the total kills is also reset (consistent) or correct.

I had another go at Thon's run, as always I'm playing pretty intermittently. Anyway, after taking a whipping from 3 gauths on the way to the unseeing eye quest forgotten temple, and running away, I decided to buy the shield of balduran. All I can say is, wow. I've always been too cheap to blow the cash on this thing, so this is the first time I've ever used it. I normally rely on stealth and fireball overkill to instakill beholders from out of sight. However, my options on a barbarian no-reload are limited, so .. dear god how has this not gotten nerfed in the fixpack? It reflects their attacks so they kill themselves, AND you still get the XP? Anything is better than this, absorb 50% and let 50% through, or my personal favorite, neutralise 25%, reflect 25% to hit allies, reflect 25% to hit enemies, and let the final 25% hit your character. Muhahahaha!
Anyway, finished the quest, then delivered Anarg's cup, the paladins hit pretty hard, so Thon had to run around the bridge district sniping them with Azureedge, which took ages. He then visited Valygar's house, but didn't leave in time so the guard arrived, Thon ducked upstairs, then down again, out, and sprinted for the Thieve's guild. I did the entire Maevar quest without going near the centre left of the map.
Finally, Thon chose to side with the thieves, and headed into the vampire den. He left shortly afterwards clutching a blood-coated mace, which he took to a dwarf in the docks for upgrading. Ding, a +5 weapon, this signals the time to return those golden bones yes? Shortly afterards, less a green scroll but sporting a rather fine new ring, Thon returned to the vampire den, but had just got downstairs when my daughter asked me to play minecraft on the xbox ![]()
