Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 80 - (update 8)

Evan, halfling shadowdancer (Grond0) & Porril, human ranger (Gate70)

Another short session yesterday saw the duo hit HLA territory.  The session started with a quick discussion of where to go.  Porril said he didn't mind where they went so long as it didn't involve illithid - so naturally Evan led him straight to the flayer city .  In fact that went pretty smoothly, with Evan digging a potion of invulnerability out of his bag to provide some protection for Porril against a couple of rooms full of illithid.  Some brine potions were made, though I'm not sure that Porril actually made use of any before crashing in on the brain - that was not attacked until it's initial defenders were dead, to avoid the brain golems arriving until they were on their own.

Spoiler

A level gained there had not just given Evan an HLA, but pushed him up to 90 HPs - as Simyaz found to his disappointment when targetting him with PW:stun.

A spot of shopping among the drow was followed by going to save Phaere.  On the way N'ashtar and his gang were defeated, although I think Porril might have resorted to a healing potion or 2 against them.  He objected mildly to Evan shooting down the cleric there, as he had been standing at the end of the bridge blocking others from joining in the assault, but Porril finished them off from that point very quickly anyway.

Spoiler

Phaere herself was duly rescued without incident.

Stats:

Evan, shadowdancer 25, 92 HPs (incl. 8 from ioun stone), 279 kills

Porril, ranger 18, 137 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm), 749 kills, 0 deaths (1 in BG1)

Blaggerd has whittled the Bhaaspawn down now, only two left at the end of this session (other than Imoen). But is he one of them?

Dorn Waves Imix.
Spoiler
Cespenar forges the Ravager +6 for Dorn. Bags the Axe of Unyielding. Amulet of the Master Harper for Sarevok. Viconia hangs onto the bag of bullets +2.

Yaga wounded
Spoiler
Yaga near death. Dorn collects the kill.
Spoiler
Jamis Tombelthen. FoD or vorpal?
Spoiler
Alternate Blaggerd - vorpalled by Dorn.
Spoiler

Several minutes buffing, first hit is a vorpal and Vongoethe is gone.
Spoiler
Draconis is a tricky bleeper.
Spoiler
Best out of two?
Spoiler
A greater werewyvern and earth elementals await inside, and are cast aside. After picking up an empty potion bottle the party move through a pool and are confronted by frost salamanders - Dorn using the Wave halberd to great effect. Two bone golems are next, defeated with Greater Whirlwind.

Sarevok finally levels up to regain his fighter abilities. Various items of equipment are swapped around to see if he can tank with the Soul Reaver sword while Dorn stands behind with the Ravager halberd. Edwin grabs the Firetooth dagger and Viconia switches from melee to the Erinne sling +5.
Spoiler

The Water Elementals dish out hefty damage to Sarevok so Blaggerd leads against an Olhydra and almost pays the price despite 127% fire and cold resistance. A kuo-toa is blocking the door and the Blackguard has to hope his aura clears in time for an Absorb Health while Dorn and Sarevok try to switch the elementals focus.
Spoiler
Blaggerd finishes the olhydra with a vorpal. While everybody else recovers, he clears out the experimental room and convinces Bondari to reload.
Spoiler
Lycanth the Mad manages the near-impossible, dying to Blackguard poison during his own Time Stop.
Spoiler
After a rest and buff, the party believe they are ready for Abazigal. Dorn scoots around the outside and Waves all the Salamanders without taking any injury, Abazigal noticing him as the last two are reached. Blaggerd has to run once, but he returns too quickly, Abazigal failing to switch to Dorn or Sarevok. This was close - closer still as Abazigal almost boxed Blaggerd in after the wing buffet.
Spoiler
Blaggerd turns to loot the corpse, and finds out all of Sarevok's gear is on the floor (!) including the potion of Superior healing. It gets bagged.

(Oh well, yet another run where I fail to see the potential of dualling Sarevok).

Blaggerd considers the options, Haer'Dalis being the best fit. If only Imoen hadn't sold all the spare scrolls after the Yaga Shura battle...

Kerrick forges the Big Metal Unit and asks if there is a dwarf berserker or a Deathbringer in the house. Dorn takes the suit of armour instead.

Off to Sendai. Blaggerd is telling everyone else to deal with the mage near the drow woodcutter while he and Dorn casually fend off the drow warriors. All of a sudden he realises he is dead and not sure why.
(I reloaded and checked. The drow warriors were hitting for about 20 a time, not a concern if you pay attention to them...)

After all his hard work in Watcher's Keep it's a shame to see another Blaggerd finding his aura of invincibility crumbling .

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 80 - (9th and final update)

Evan, halfling shadowdancer (Grond0) & Porril, human ranger (Gate70)

After Blaggerd's unfortunate demise earlier today for Gate70 it seemed like a good idea to offer him a bit of comfort with a nice bit of MP progress.

However, things didn't go entirely to plan!  There was a dodgy start when I chose the wrong dialogue option with the svirfneblin when asking for a helmet and Porril had to hurry across the Underdark to help out before Solaufein was killed.  The next problem was when Porril killed too many guards after Evan switched the eggs over and the city went hostile.  Initially the duo tried to sneak out, but the gates were locked by the time they got there and they had to go and get the key off the matron mother.

After Adalon and Porril made short work of the drow guarding the exit it was back to Athkatla.  There was no sign of Kruin - perhaps he had heard that the Silver Sword had been sold - so the duo went in search of the planar prison ... and then they went in search of the portal gem, eventually tracking it down on the original altar (which had surprisingly been detrapped, but not looted).  After that lot a disaster might have been expected at the planar prison, but in fact it proved incredibly easy.  The mage died before he could cast anything on their original entrance, various thralls were confused by the harp found with the portal gem, the Master of Thralls lasted only a few seconds and the Warden didn't do much better (most of his yuan-ti back-up also being confused).  Evan tried out his new Shadow Form HLA on entrance to the prison and was interested to see that the improved invisibility aspect of that appeared not to be dispelled by thief detecting.

Moving on to the Planar Sphere the worst of the halflings had been pulled back and died before Porril charged the remainder - and things unravelled swiftly from there.  Porril was dominated, but managed to shout out a warning as he advanced on Evan.  I thought that was a good opportunity to use Evan's shadowstep special ability and activated that, only to find it didn't work.  The reason for that was that although on my computer Evan had not yet been attacked by Porril, on Gate70's the attack had happened and disrupted the ability.  That still didn't seem too much of a concern though, especially given Evan's ability to hide while in plain sight and he quickly ran away.  Porril lagged behind as Evan reached safety behind a door - or so I thought.  That wasn't really very bright of me of course given that I had only seconds before had a demonstration of lag problems, but it was still a shock when the game suddenly ended - the result of Porril's lag attacks suddenly catching up.

To illustrate the issue here's a screenshot showing where Evan died on my screen (the splash of blood on the extreme right of the screenshot).

Death_zpsj8pskgew.jpg

Given that I was hosting the game you might have thought that the position on my screen would be the important one, but unfortunately it was the action on Gate70's screen that took precedence - he watched frozen in horror while Evan apparently stood next to Porril waiting patiently to be executed .

Auch Gate & Grond0.. :( Great runs non the less.

Malmuira, 2nd BG2 update (or 3rd).

I'll be brief. We visited Nalia's Keep, but only to forge FoA+3. Yuan-ti was dispelled and killed easilly. I didn't fight Torgal yet, I have special plans for him

55_zpsglq504kz.jpg

Next, Vampires. I used Pro Undead Scroll here. That's incredible! Even Bodhi ignored us!

56_zpspog8bz6s.jpg

Same tactic (if you wanna call it that) destroyed Shade Lord. Completely oblivious to MoD hits.

57_zpsk0n2swgq.jpg

Back to city, some loose ends tied.

58_zpsnzw9t07p.jpg

Next, shopping - Balduran + Vecna. Now I'm ready for Beholder cheese.

59_zpskmktzrrt.jpg

Sorceress got level 14 there. She picks Demon summoning as her 1st pick. Given her partially Neutral alignment, she can gate whatever she wants out of the three demon types. Tanar'ri Nabassu is probably the best choice at level 7 however  - one was enough to clear out entire Lathander temple. :D

60_zpsf23enm8h.jpg

I gate in three of those to take care of Torgal. They cause level drain, so I don't care much about fire/acid to kill trolls anymore.

61_zps0kgnbpb7.jpg

For a change of pace, Cornugons are the choice of anti-druid combat. These are nice. The only problem is they love to cast Lighting Bolt, and don't really care about your party's safety while they do it.

62_zpst0l7rees.jpg

Note, in all these fights, both my PCs are invisible basically. I let demons do the work. :P

I can't let them do *everything*, however, since they can't be controlled an if there are innocents around they'll kill them. They will kill everything not under Pro Evil actually. My protagonist buys Sensate Amulet, so she's fairly safe - sorceress must rely on SI:Abj to keep Pro Evil running. Example: I can't gate in vs Conster - demons would kill the hostage as well. PW:Stun is just as good, however.

63_zpsuopuamfi.jpg

I needed more levels - to WK we go. As per level 8 choices, sorceress again picks demonic summons as her first pick. Here we have the infamous Glabrezu type. Those are cool - very tanky with permanent Mirror images; have PW:Stun, and teleport around at will. My protagonist also had a few powerful summons, namely Aerial Servants. While this is quite decent in vanilla as well, with aTweaks, it's roughly 10x as good.

64_zpsdygr3bry.jpg

Actually, it's kind of broken, since they have permanent invisibility. :P

Level 2 WK saw our first death. Naturally, demons clear the way for us, destroying the otherwise annoying Air elementals in a pinch.

65_zpsfwootwr1.jpg

My sorceress died to our own Glabrezu - a Kuo-Toa dispeled her Pro Evil, and PW:Stun was enough so that she never moves again. She wasn't chunked, so I'm happy.

Malmuira, final update. :(

2nd death of the run - Mind Flayers brain eat.

67_zpsfjlfbame.jpg

Kind of rough area, they teleported around constantly. It was hard to keep distance. Still pulled through however. My protagonist hit clerical level 14 here. This is important. Now she can cast the uber spell - Gate. This can summon one of the three types - Yugoloth is kind of a caster, fairly interesting but also fragile. Pit Fiend is decent enough - imp.invisible, disease hit, Wish 1x/day (you don't get to choose what he wishes for however). The real deal, however, is the Balor. It's incredibly tanky (SCS beefed Hit Points), in addition to other extravaganza he has a 15% chance, no save, chunk vorpal. He is also incredibly quick (haste doesn't outrun him). I used one vs Alhoon there; but they ignored each other. Sling did the job just fine.

68_zpsinhsn9dn.jpg

With Pit Fiend on-line, we can do anything. Temple slavers - laughable.

We run past them, trigger the anti-invis trap, use invis potions, summon our army.

Enemies charge towards us but it's too late, Balor's already there. Muahahahhahahaha..... :D Glabrezu is just for kicks, Balor can kill them all actually.

69_zpsheolguzf.jpg

In fact, all died in 3 rounds. Maferan and Ketta vorpalized, Koshi confused and PW:Stunned by Glabrezu, chopped to pieces. Sion had PfMW, so he lived enough to Wish for 2xTimeStop + Alacrity. Yeah....GL with that. :D

70_zpsxi6kuw1y.jpg

71_zpsh09r1sgs.jpg

And finally- Planar Sphere proved to be my demise again. Things were going fairly well actually, our Gated minions destroying everything.

72_zpsflrhb8cn.jpg

I even had no trouble vs Lavok with my Balor. however, things got really rough outside the sphere. Some ugly gating ensured we won't be lonely here. I had Baatezu summons here -Pit Fiend and a few lower level ones.

All three demonic enemies succesfully open Gate (with aTweaks you can't really fight one at a time) and I kind of got slightly worried. Those three Gates are just the Nabassu frieds, Glabrezu and Marilith haven't even started yet. :P

73_zpsjaerdenj.jpg

Anyhow, i fight them a bit, summon some more, then I notice a fairly bad thing - one of the gated demons is a Balor. RUUUN! I had no Death Ward on anymore, it got dispelled. It's one hit away from death now.

74_zpsuydswqhj.jpg

I can't outrun him. He's also very persistent and won't be bothered with summons. He hits a few times, no vorpals however...

75_zpsb6bbuaj1.jpg

I summon some Gelugons, but that's nothing against the horde approaching.

At least Balor prefers them over dwarves..... :D

76_zpsjzlgcmoj.jpg

I run out.  I can't do anything here. I rest in the Sphere and rebuff. Round two. I hope at least those who were gated would dissapear.

77_zpsckcftp4d.jpg

Bad, bad, bad. They're all still there. :crying: Sorceress is held instantly. I wait for their dispel and cast Death Ward on myself.

78_zpsolmnn25k.jpg

It won't be  possible to claim the demon heart I think.

79_zpsswpp42gp.jpg

I quaff an Oil of Speed and run towards the exit, but demons teleport, block the exit, few hits, and it's done.

80_zpsrfibyhge.jpg

Those summons look outrageous!  :P

Ya.  :)

So, to summarize: Your demons killed everything until they ran into bigger demons...

Do you intend to give you demon-centric setup another try?

Nah, the demons I summoned and used are the same I fought against. The problem was the Marilith who gated Balor. That's basicallly bad luck - If I reloaded she might summon some simple crap only which my own demons could fight against. I can't bring Balor down w/o WW attacks, since I need to stay away from melee. Lacked only 100K XPfor HLAs.

I don't know about another try. I could go with a fighter/mage + a sorcerer, that way I couldn't care less about Balors since I'd use PFMW.

Maybe I should alter the Balors myself. I'm fine with no-save vorpal, I'd simply remove the "chunking" part so I can send party members to melee them (SCS does that, while aTweaks ensures you never get near a Balor in a No-Reload. 15% is pretty darn high chance.).

I think so, yes. I'll get them yet. My philosophy was "If you can't beat them, join them", but....

Nah, the demons I summoned and used are the same I fought against.

I'm aware. My summary statement was a joke, intended to highlight the prominence of demons in your setup- especially given your most recent strategy.

It's your setup and your call, but to my eye, the demons have always looked poorly balanced in your installs. In most of your runs, you've cruised through significant swaths of the adventure only to eventually be outclassed by demons, usually on account of an unfortunate gate outcome. Many of those terminal fights have not been close. Now that you're fighting demons with demons (and often standing around invisible) it seems even more absurd.

Again, it's your game and your call: your enjoyment is the paramount concern. But if I can voice my opinion as an observer, what I'd like to see is an IR/SR run with full SCSv30 & Ascension w/o the over the top aTweaks demon options. Something like Serg's setup, perhaps, but with IR and SR.

Anyhoo. Whatever you choose, best of luck! And enjoy!

A.

It was a "themed" run; if not a joke :D . I wanted to see how it would play out. It's kind of cool in a certain way (especially with Balors and Glabrezu available, you get hilarius scenes....Ketta drinking invisibility potion only to get vorpalized the next second is epic...) but the difficulty of certain encounters (like Planar Sphere, and to a lesser extent Planar Prison) varies greatly due to randomness of gating.

Fwiw - I think aTweaks demons are actually fairly balanced overall *if* you forbid gating. You only got Balors to be really worried about, if only for the chunking effect which can't be saved against, the rest can be dealt with fairly easilly if you're careful.

The "greater picture" of gating is that it simply doesn't really go well with No-Reloads; it's based on sheer chance which can't really be predicted. It can easilly fail completely, or you can get in an extra 10 demons where there was once 3. When one of those 10 is a Balor.... :(

what I'd like to see is an IR/SR run with full SCSv30 & Ascension w/o the over the top aTweaks demon options. Something like Serg's setup, perhaps, but with IR and SR.

Heh. I'd like that as well; since I find the game much more enjoyable that way (add Kit Revisons & Refinements as well). The game is harder with Revisions however, you get much more to worry about. I used this install since I needed a change. Playing vanilla is (well, almost) playing a new game for me.

I will definitely reinstall and revert back to my "regular" Revisioned game. Better the devil I know...

Ruzzel the Illusionist and his band of mages and berserker update:

Well one BG 2 run is still going (if a bit slowly), Ruzzel's. We have cleared out Yaga's Temple, and have just defeated Nylee and her cohorts. We did lots of pocket plane resting for Yaga's Temple - not a  lot of buffs, mostly pro fire and resist fear. Since this is likely the last time I will have so many mages in the party, I have experimented with the mage scripts - they actually work fairly well, though to be effective require lot of resting (no surprise with a mage group...)

Yaga's siege camp will be next session...

The green-circled Demons are my own (loyal when Protected from Evil) summons. Their alegiance changes if Pro Evil is removed, and they immediately stop whatever they're doing and attack the summoner.

aTweaks "Revised Demon Summoning" allows you to gate in creatures depending on your alignment (lawful - Baatezu, chaotic - Tanar'ri, neutral ones can also gate Yugoloths). You cannot control their actions, they're fully independent; if they kill something XP is rewarded to your party; likewise, if they do something "bad" like killing innocents, lure them to Abyss or similar you will suffer reputation drop as if you did the bad deed yourself.

I don't know how this works in vanilla (I generally don't use demons); iirc you probably don't get XP but you also don't loose reputation.

Dyara had just been woken up by Imoen and is still a little but dizzy - both Dyaras actually, one because of what Irenicus probably did to her, the other because of what time did to her knowledge of Baldur's Gate part 2... nevertheless Jaheira and Minsc are successfully released from their cages and no-one got killed so far (true both for party and enemies).

To be continued...
