Terra first, and final BG2 update

Terra survived Irenicus' Dungeon, avoiding Ilych and his fellows in the library and the next room on the first level, and using buffs and Skeletons to deal with the Mephits on the second level.

Spoiler
Ulvaryl was done in with a backstab,
Spoiler
as was Frennedan.

The Circus was successfully restored, and Hendak installed as the new Copper Coronet manager.

Spoiler
Terra then traveled tothe Bridge District to clear up the skinner murder mystery. To my complete surprise, Aegisfield was battling four bandits. This might be a Tactics thing, I had never seen this before. The bandits were more interested in Terra than in Aegisfield. Terra had no invisibility potions yet and was soon Slowed by a bandit mage.

She:
- quaffed an oil of speed to cancel out that effect,
- failed to hide in shadows in the Balthis Estate,
- made it back to the area border at very low health, due to the bandits' ranged hits, Flame Arrows, Flamestrikes and backstabs,

Spoiler

-got Horrored for one second but somehow overcame her panic, and saved vs a Mental Domination,

Spoiler

- managed to flee the area toward Waukeen's Promenade, but got waylaid on her way there.

With a muddy aura, she couldn't quaff any extra healing potions to survive the slavers' first ranged hits.

Spoiler

What a brutal game this is. If only I'd known about those bandits...

That's a shame Blackraven, after all that good work in BG1.  Maybe getting into the habit of moving everywhere under stealth would help.

Thanks guys.
@Grond0, good point. I do actually use stealth a lot (even have aTweaks' Simple Thief script running to make sure my Thieves are hidden as often as possible).Terra arrived still under he cover of stealth although stealth mode had ended due to area transition. She walked toward Balthis' Estate, to re-activate stealth around the corner, but one of the bandits followed her. My mistake, in hindsight, was trying my luck with her 19 STR quadruple damage backstab. The stab didn't kill the bandit, and his friends immediately appeared (one or two of them were hasted). Her eventual hide attempt, inside Balthis' Estate failed, and well the rest is history...

Perhaps you needed some allies to even the odds, e.g. Horn of Valhalla, Genie Lamp, Kithix - for a thief, all of these would be pretty easy to get.

Yeah that would definitely have helped. I also should have bought Ribald's invisibility potion.
Anyway, as I said I'd never had this ambush, so I'm cool with what happened.

Bummer, Blackraven. It's been a rough few weeks.

Have you tried using Sanctuary during in town area transitions?

Best,

Thanks Alesia, yes I haven't been at my best lately...
I like Sanctuary, and probably would have used it - again, had I known what was awaiting me. (I understand now it was a Tactics thing.)
Having said that, enemies still go after my Sanctuaried characters (even into buildings), so it's only useful to buy time or safely leave an area. At least I know I'll have to be more careful than ever in Athkatla in my current install.

In some editions of SCS they'll follow Sanctuaried creatures, but they won't attack, unless they detect the invisible via script.

I've found that I can use it to mitigate Athkatlan ambush risk. My priests typically cast it before early Athkatlan area transitions.

Anyhoo. Good luck with your next attempt!

Best,

Hey folks!  I thought I'd get a quicker response here.

In the Spellhold Asylum in Bodhi's maze.

I have Dace's hand and the statue says, 'the way is open," but we can't pass?  Any way I can go in and edit something to open the way?

CKT, http://gemrb.org/ies...ef.htm contains all the SoA area codes. You need to be in Area 1513 I think.

Open the baldur.ini file in your install folder using Word Pad, and type in Debug Mode=1 under Program Options if you haven't done this already.
This allows you to activate Clua Commands in your game. (You might want to quit your game while changing the baldur-ini file).

In-game, press Ctrl and Space bar at the same time, and type in CLUAConsole:MoveToArea(''AR1513''), including the quotation marks.
If it's not the correct area (can't check that right now), it'll have to be one of the nearby areas (AR1514 perhaps).

Strange bug btw, and great progress!

In-game, press Ctrl and Space bar at the same time, and type in CLUAConsole:MoveToArea(''AR1513''), including the quotation marks.

Is this from the 'game play screen' or the 'options screen?'

Maybe I did something wrong but I typed in Debug Mode=1 directly under Program Options, saved it that way and then opened the game.

But, when I go to the game & try to press Control/Space Bar @ the same time.  On the in 'game play screen' it doesn't do anything but 'unpause.'  On the ''options screen' it doesn't do anything.

Sorry to be the dumbest guy in the room folks & I know this isn't the place. Hope you will bear with me.  CKT

No there's nothing dumb about that. You seem to have done everything right. I hope someone can help you here,
It should work in the game screen (not the options screen).

Thanks again B_R.  I read did everything & it worked.

Somebody showed this CLUAConsole: to me once but I usually don't mess around w/the inner mechanics of the game - other than Shadow Keeper if that counts.  And that's just to tailor my PC/NPCs to exact AD&D skills/stats.

Thanks again.  Gotta get the area correct but I think I can pull it off from here (I just wanna keep the momentum up).  Famous last words.

It was AR1514.  THANK YOU!

Too bad about Terra... Brutal indeed...

Eren the kensai/thief was also very vulnerable the first few hours of bg2. But he had fighter hp. Also: Anomen. Enough said..

No but seriously Anomen being able to cast a greater skeleton and a freaking heal the moment you recruit him and Jaheira learning insect plague fast helpes progress the early game A LOT.

Dont give up bro!, Cheers!

Dyara, elven Fighter/Mage/Thief, take 1 (update 1)

Installation and first steps

Once everyone was reasonably equipped with weapon and armor the party started to explore the dungeon. Next to Jaheira's cage there was a door but it was closed and neither Dyara nor Imoen were able to open it. There was a golem in the room where they had found the weapons but other than 'you must return to your cell'  it had no advice for the party. Next to the jailkeeper's room there was a privy and a narrow tunnel leading north. Inside Dyara espied a dust mephit...

Spoiler

Unfortunately the tunnel ended in front of a locked door, so they had to turn back. As there was no way else they headed to the south-west. Immediately the corridor turned right and ended in a small room. In the center of the room was a large contraption firing bolts of lightning which in turn spawned Lightning Mephits when they struck the wall - fortunately both the machine and the already spawned Lightning Mephits were easily switched off. As they continued their exploration the dungeon became more and more creepy... genies asking riddles, lots of vats with various creatures inside, some dead, some still alive (if you can call that living, that is). But at least they were able to improve their gear as Dyara had found a magical long sword and Jaheira was wielding a magical staff now.

In BG1EE Dyara had a familar; the import had removed the familar but not the additional +6 HP. So I fixed that with EEkeeper (removed the +6 HP) and then Dyara summoned a new (improved) familar adding +12 to Dyara's HP.

After fighting their way through lots of mephits and goblins they came upon some duergar dwarves. Before approaching them Imoen had summoned an Ogrillon, she had casted haste on the party and Dyara's familar (who doesn't have a name yet) had made them all invisible (all but Imoen for some reason but her stoneskin helped). Besides Minsc taking lots of damage (not for the first time) the fight went pretty well. Dyara stabbed the mage, then everyone turned on Ilyich and the rest followed soon...

Spoiler

In another room the party found a Cambion trapped inside some magical barrier. Once the barrier was deactivated the Cambion attacked but was slain easily...

Spoiler

He dropped the Sword of Chaos+2 and Dyara wondered how the Cambion came by her brother's sword. Nevertheless the sword was given to Minsc and the party turned back as this was a dead end. The sewer golem then opened some of the locked doors to the sewage chamber and inside the Otyugh was backstabbed...

Spoiler

In a bedroom to the east Dyara found some of her old items (Helm of Balduran, Metaspell Influence Amulet), also an Air Elemental Statue. Further south there were some trees and some Dryads were asking them to bring the acorns they had taken from dead Ilyich to the Fairy Queen in the Windspear hills (Dyara didn't really know where these hills might be but agreed nevertheless). When they entered the bedroom to the south an alarm ringed, some lesser clay golems arrived but were turned into sandheaps. The Air Elemental Statue allowed the party to enter the Elemental Plane of Air where lots of mephits were to be fought and killed...

Spoiler

Inside a lamp there was a genie and once released from the lamp (and after lots of walking back and forth) he traded a flask for Dyara's old weapon Varscona+2. Using the portal key from the Mistress' Room the party went to the next level of the dungeon. There they met the bounty hunter Yoshimo. 'The first bounty hunter who doesn't want to kill me - outright, must be my lucky day', Dyara thought. Yoshimo had told them about the next rooms and so both Dyara and Yoshimo sneaked into the next room and started to attack the two mephit portals further away from door while Minsc and Jaheira destroyed the ones next to the door. Everyone felt they had made a big step forward when they found Khalid...

Spoiler

At least according to Imoen he had been dead when Irenicus (they had learned the name from the dryads) did to Khalid... the things he did...

Spoiler

Ever since she had been released from her cell Dyara had worried about Imoen. The imprisonment and the torture hat removed from her all the cheerfulness and playfulness, had it replaced with dreariness and sadness only. At any moment, Dyara feared, Imoen could crack up altogether. And now Jaheira was about to go mad as well... 'we have to get out and we have to do it quickly', she thought, 'otherwise we all wack out...'

After disarming the traps in the next room using the keys they had found they saw some thieves attacking a vampire. Not sure what to do they decided to attack the vampire. The party didn't really kill the vampire but still they gained a lot (of experience) from that fight...

Spoiler

The surviving Shadow Thief Battlemage however wasn't amused about the XP being stolen by the party (as if he were able to kill the vampire), he attacked and was slain right away but not before causing Jaheira and Yoshimo to panic...

Spoiler

... but acting quickly, Imoen closed the door. After some more fights...

Spoiler

... the party finally came upon a pathway leading out of the prison and upward into the welcome glare of daylight. Such was the relief that they barely noticed the debris at their feet, the remnants of a battle fought only moments before. Then a massive explosion collapsed the passage they had just passed through. The fight, so it seemed, was still going on... a powerful mage, most likely their captor was attacked by thieves, then some cowled men appeared, the fighting continued and then they all disappeared, Jon Irenicus and Imoen with them...

Spoiler

Dyara: Fighter(7)/Mage(7)/Thief(7), 72 HP (+5 Balduran's Helm), 20,830 XP, 49 kills, Mephit Portal (5,000), Items (i.a.): Helm of Balduran, Bracers of Defense AC8, Ring of the Princes+1, Metaspell Influence Amulet, Varscona+2, Composit Longbow
Imoen: Thief(7)->Mage(8), 57 HP, 12,690 XP, 10 kills, Cambion (6,000), Items (i.a.): Short Sword, Short Bow
Minsc: Ranger(7), 69 HP, 9,900 HP, 22 kills, Mephit Portal (5,000), Items (i.a.): Helm of Infravision, Mail of the Dead+2, Sword of Chaos+2, Composit Longbow
Jaheira: Fighter(6)/Druid(7), 51 HP, 3,650 XP, 7 kills, Lesser Clay Golem (2,000), Items (i.a.): Splint Mail, Medium Shield, Club, Sling
Yoshimo: Bounty Hunter(10), 5,680 XP, 5 kills, Mephit Portal (5,000), Items (i.a.): Leather Armor, Yoshimo's Katana, Short Bow

To be continued...

Ruzzel and his band of mages and berserker update:

Ruzzel and team has defeated Yaga-Shura. We also defeated the ambush as the Oasis. Chain contingency - horrid wilting x3 has been quite helpful, it's too bad only one mage knows that spell Yaga fight got a bit dicey at the end - much of the battle was AI, then I found Ruzzel was in melee with Yaga, with about 4 enemies surrounding him - most of the mages were out of friendly damage spells. What little we had I had everyone fire at Yaga - Ruzzel was getting hurt, but fortunately Yaga-Shura died first... As for Oasis, horrid wiltings and dragon breaths and a few summons saw us through that fight. The enemy mages did a good showing for themselves, forcing us to use heal potions quite a bit. But fortunately they fell without inflicting casualty on our team.

We have arrived at Amkethran, and are considering our next move. Here's a sample screenshot of our adventure (Oasis):

Slow but steady Corey, getting close... Keep it up :)

Dagny, Gnome Cleric/Illusionist (1st SoA update)

Dagny has had very rough start in SoA, not at all promising. The good thing is that no permanent harm was done.

As I mentioned in my BG1 post, during Dagny's BG1 run I got more and more inclined to have her travel with a (probably caster-heavy) party in BG2. So in Irenicus' dungeon she teamed up with Imoen, Minsc and Jaheira, ignoring the fact that she hardly knew the latter two. This is her character record at the beginning of the game:

Spoiler
The sequencer was still memorized from BG1. I changed two things in Shadowkeeper:

- I lowered her XP with 100k (which still didn't keep her from immediately gaining one level in each of her classes), and
- I added 6 HPs when she found Murphy, her rabbit familiar, behind the painting that also contains the dagger +1 (and the golden pantaloons for those Charnames that unlike Dagny remember to bring them). In BG1 her familiar gave Dagny only 6 HPs, so I gave her the 6 extra HPs that a SoA familiar accounts for.

Dagny refused to answer the Golem's riddle. She had no siblings (except if there were more Bhaalspawn than she and Sarevok), and she had no idea what she would do. With great difficulty Minsc and Jaheira bested the Flesh Golems that they would have to face sooner or later.

Spoiler
We had only one opportunity to rest in the dungeon, so didn't do that yet, choosing instead to (partly) heal with potions. A combination of Invisibility and Sanctuary allowed Dagny to loot the library and the adjacent room, picking up a suit of Fallorain's plate mail +1, Semaj's blurring Cloak, some scrolls and healing potions, among other things. (I didn't allow the use of BGT Tweaks-imported BG1 items except for Semaj's Cloak and Koveras' upgraded Ring of Protection +2.)

The armor and the cloak made Jaheira noticeably more resilient, and the Otyugh and Duergar more manageable. Imoen disarmed most of the snares in the rooms north and southwest of the garden. Stoneskinned Dagny set off one trap that Imoen failed to disarm, without suffering any damage because I knew it was a physical damage trap.

Spoiler
We proceeded to the next level. With Yoshimo in their midst and accompanied by five summoned Skeletons, the companions, Hasted and PfE by Dagny, had no problems with the Mephit portals even though a Color Spray briefly confused Yoshi.
Spoiler
Aided by Dagny's Skeletons, the companions dealt with the Escaped Clone, Frennedan, and the Duergar in the smithy. Strangely we failed to pick up the Girdle of Bluntness. I discovered this when it was already too late. (I suspect that the character that had to grab it, had a full inventory without me registering it.) The companions wanted to kill Ulvaryl as well, but waited too long for the Shadow Thief wizard to badly injure the vampire: Ulvaryl prevailed and disappeared.

Rested and better equipped, the companions returned to the first level before they left the dungeon. They cleared the library and the next room, where Dagny blinded the Duergar mage before he went hostile, and where Ilych was slain.

Spoiler
Thus the way was paved to the Pocketplane of Air. There were some inconveniences, such as Dagny getting Stunned and others getting Blinded, but the collective firepower of the party was too much for the Mephits. Helping Malaaq made Jaheira and Dagny level up.

In the Circus, Kalah's hideout was difficult to reach due to hard-hitting Werewolves barring the stairs. Dagny cast Chaos on them, which caused them to head downstairs. An Insect Plague by Jaheira neutralized Kalah before Minsc slew him.

Spoiler
When the circus was restored to its old form, Aerie joined the party at Quayle's behest. She's a Chorister Bard:
Spoiler

The companions rested at the Den of the Seven Vales and did some shopping at Waukeen's Promenade, with Dagny buying the Reflection Shield for herself. She made the mistake of casting Friends in front of Galoomp, earning herself a first warning from the Cowled Wizards.

Our next stop was Gaelan Bayle's home. The rogue told the companions he could help them find Imoen for no less than 40k GP. Allies are expensive indeed in the city of coin.
Brus showed us the Copper Coronet where new, cheaper alliances were made: Nalia (Swasbuckler 10 -> Mage 7) and Anomen (Fighter 7 -> Priest of Helm) joined the party; Minsc was thanked for his help in Irenicus' dungeon and left the party.

The new party of six was eager to set things straight in the Copper Coronet, but they had an unexpectedly hard time doing so. Normally, i.e. in the setups I'm used to, entering the area with the cells wil cause a guard to call a number of helpers: two or three archers and two mages. (With my rogues I like to insta-gib the guard so that no backup arrives, but I didn't try that with Yoshimo.)
Initially these were indeed the foes the party had to deal with, and we had our hands full with that job. Anomen, Yoshi and Jaheira were all Held. Aerie countered with a Dispel Magic though.
Spoiler
Jaheira got Charmed shortly after, but Anomen then dispelled that condition with a Dispel Magic of his own and soon the party had the upper hand. At that point it seemed all was going swell, but then a first sign that we were mistaken presented itself, an archer attacking Dagny and Aerie from behind. He was Held by Dagny and dispatched by the duo.
Spoiler
Turned out there were somehow three groups of backup guards instead of one, each containing I think three archers and two mages. There was the group that we had been fighting in the hallway, a second group in front of the prison cells, and a third group back in the public area of the inn.

With the first group down, we were completely unsuspecting of any danger when we entered the area with the prison cells to heal and recover. Before they knew it Yoshimo and Jaheira were Held again, and this time we had no Dispel Magics available to release them. Dagny Slowed the enemy and cast Invisibility on her Held comrades to keep them out of harm's way. Anomen dealt some friendly-fireless AoE damage with a Holy Smite (also in hopes of blinding his foes).

Spoiler
Yoshi and Nalia, who was lacking memorized spells, retreated after they got injured. Anomen got Charmed. So Dagny was on her own. She went Invisible and waited for the Holds and the Charm to wear off.
Spoiler
When this happened, Jaheira retalliated with an Insect Plague that she had already started casting when she got Held, and Anomen summoned two Mountain Bears. These spells decided the battle in the party's favor.

Most of the companions were injured though, and out of spells, which was why we decided to go back to Bernard to rest, again without expecting any hostile guards. This was when we ran into the third and final group. (Interestingly, the bouncers remained neutral.) Various problems presented themselves. Nalia and Yoshimo were in no condition to fight, so they tried to go upstairs to the room where previously a pair of Gloves of Pickpocketing had been secured. Aerie got Held, and being a low HP character required the party's help. Jaheira and Anomen engaged and killed the archers that were a threat to her. All this action distracted me a bit from Dagny - my usual fault when I play with parties - and I was kind of lucky to timely discover that her Stoneskins had been stripped and that she was suffering repeated blows from a hasted mage. The following image shows her status after she had quaffed an extra healing potion.

Spoiler
While running from the wizard she had to save vs a Charm, which she did. (The mages did not to attack Charmed Anomen, so I think a failed save wouldn't have been fatal necessarily). Eventually Anomen, Jaheira, Dagny and the Mountain Bears dispatched the enemy in physical combat.

Normally I don't describe this quest in much detail, but boy, six hasted Hold and Charm casting battle mages was almost more than the party could handle.

The Beastmaster was a piece of cake after that and after a rest. A Chaos from Dagny and a couple of Spooks made him and his pets very manageable.

Spoiler
Bernard sold Dagny a scroll of Invisibility 10' Radius that she wanted to copy into her spellbook to ensure safe area transitioning, but the Gnome had already learnt more than the maximum number of level 3 spells allowed by her intelligence, and wasn't willing to erase any spells without even knowing whether she'd successfully scribe Invisibility 10' Radius. Instead Dagny and Aerie, who both knew the lvl 2 spell Invisibility, cast that spell on their companions and themselves after another rest.

The six then traveled to the Bridge District where Stoneskin was expected to guarantee the party some easy XP in the Skinner quest. Still invisible, Dagny cast that spell at the area border, right in front of Lt Aegisfield. As she had already cast Friends out in the open, this triggered the arrival of three Cowled Enforcers with spells like ADHW, PW: Stun, Sphere of Chaos, the works...

Spoiler
This was not intended, and it was fortunate that this slip-up happened by the area border. The party left before even having been spoken to. I googled a bit to find out whether the Cowlies go away after a certain time, but found no answers. I could have asked here on the forums, but decided to investigate by myself.

We made it back to the Copper Coronet, sold most of our possessions to Bernard, and then traveled to the Gov District to acquire a spell casting license. I hoped this would assuage the Cowled Enforcers.
Dagny Hasted the party and turned Invisible like her companions. The party then returned to the Bridge District. In case the Cowled ones were still there, Haste and Invisibility would (hopefully) allow the party to rush past the hostile wizards before their invisibility was to be dispelled. Ideally Lt Aegisfield would then take on the wizards without them fighting back. However, we weren't fast enough to elude the wizards' detection magic. Yoshimo was then sacrificed so brave to engage the enemy so that the others could escape. He fell soon after.

Spoiler
The wizards removed his Haste, cast Time Stop and Chaos, and summoned a Mordy's Sword and an Efreeti. They also gated in a Bone Fiend that teleported without error toward the surviving party members, prompting them to leave the area on the southern end.

A few rests later we returned to see if the Enforcers were still there. They were, and with them was a group of bandits (probably the Tactics ones that surprised Terra, my last Charname).

Spoiler
Leaving the area triggered the Eldarin ambush.

While at a safe distance from the ambushers, we read some interesting messages in the combat log: Lt Aegisfield was fighting the bandits.

Spoiler
I'd always been fond of the man, but knowing that he actually fought crime himself, rather than merely talking about it or hiring adventurers to do the dirty work, improved his rapport with me even further. A Cloudkill and an Insect Plague did much for the companions to overcome Eldarin and co.
Spoiler
Anomen with a Chaotic Commands cast on himself, slew the Slaver Wizard.
Spoiler
We waited for a while after Lt Aegisfield finished his last bandit, to see if he would direct his efforts toward the Cowled Enforcers, but the combat log showed no more action from him. This could mean two things: either he didn't fancy his chances against the Cowled Enforcers, or the Enforcers were gone. We went to see for ourselves and were most pleased that the latter was true.
Spoiler
Anomen reconnoitered the area to see if they had moved somewhere, but no.

Lesson learned: after inadvertently antagonizing the Cowled ones, wait for a couple of days, and they should be gone :)

Not all was well btw. A band of initially invisible Muggers felled Nalia with backstabs.

Spoiler
Both Yoshimo and Nalia were raised at the Temple of Helm. The companions will get some rest now at the Five Flagons Inn. Yoshimo is going to leave the party so that Jan can join, but he will probably help with the Skinner Murder quest first. A thieving spree is high on the to-do list because we need better equipment if we want to survive much longer.

Glad to see you making progress, Corey and Blackraven!

Good hunting!

A.

Btw. Aphril and Adara are currently in Irenicus's dungeon awaiting guidance from on high. They may make progress this weekend, although I may retire them instead: I'm not sure I want to invest the time in a BG2 run right now.

Dylan went through the dungeon pretty quickly - using traps quite a lot.  The only potentially dangerous moment was when a duergar mage turned up unexpectedly, but he found that glitterdust was not the best way to put off a vengeful swashbuckler.
Spoiler
Ulvaryl was not damaged at all by the assassins and the single potion of firebreath that was all Dylan had that could damage her was not sufficient.
Spoiler

After reporting in to Gaelan Bayle Dylan set about generating money by trading in stolen goods.  While doing that he triggered the Suna Seni ambush.  Traps and his horror killed three of the attackers (including 2 of the invisible thieves), but Suna Seni herself saved against the horror.  Dylan decided to try and get her sword anyway and a series of successful stealth attacks did the job without any of the remaining enemies joining in the fight.
Spoiler

With money no longer a problem Dylan was on the way to Watcher's Keep to get the potion case when Renfeld called for help.  The mage was scared by horror and ran into traps and the rest of them were easy enough to finish off.
Spoiler

Back in Athkatla Dylan returned Renfeld and then spent a while isolating and picking off some invisible muggers.  He also nearly had a problem with the mad cleric when a beggar asking him for money allowed the cleric to approach and he only just got away to hide before the cleric cast a spell (he did have potions of invisibility as another option).
Spoiler
He then used traps, horror and stealth to sort out Prebek and Sanasha and complete Xzar's quest.
Spoiler

Still looking to upgrade equipment he's just picked up the berserker horn from the Bridge District and will be off to Trademeet next to get more summons.  He's not yet called in at the Copper Coronet to meet up with Dagny - largely because rumour has it that the inn has been drunk dry in a riotous celebration by the gnome and his companions following their victory there.
