Condolences, Corey. Next time, don't forget the rock!

Best of luck to Picenon. It's time for him to graduate to the Hall.

Best,

A.

Sorry to see Thaxy claim another victim Corey, but I'm sure Picenon will soon be looking for revenge :P.

Quick Note on Aphril's Game:

Aphril, Adara, and Aerie are nearly ready to set off for Imoen. They raised some gold, bought some scrolls, and then completed a mission with Nalia just to confirm that they had the logic worked out for their item and spell slot allocations in 4 person combat. The mission was a minor one: clearing out the remaining slaver's in the Slums.

Here we see Aphril, Adara, Aerie, and Nalia all full buffed with Specific Protections and negative saves. Note that Nalia is a gimp here, since she lacks GoI and Spell Shield, but she is otherwise covered. Imoen will have GoI, assuming she successfully memorizes the scroll we've reserved for her, but she will lack Spell Shield until we get to Carlig. Double Wondrous Recalls allow us to apply Protection from Lightning and Chaotic Commands all around, while still having room for True Sight.

Spoiler

Of course, Nalia's gimp status hardly mattered in this fight: an opening quadruple Sunfire killed everyone...

Spoiler

except for this poor bloke who got melted in 3 seconds flat.

Spoiler

Anyhoo. We're ready, I think- even if I am worried about Jonicus's Planetar.

Best,

A.

Btw. I should also note that for the first time in forever, I had the Apprenti fashion a deadly item. I went with the Ring of Wizardry, since Aerie will benefit from an extra L5 and L6. That will prevent her from becoming a defensive weak link in the mid/late game.

Again, I deeply lament the loss of a loved one. I’ve lost Amber in this ongoing journey of loss. I’d just begun to realize my heart belonged to Amber & I was waiting for an opportunity to share that w/her. But now, as seems to be my fate, she’s been snatched from my fantasies w/o having ever lived one day of them in reality. I’m numb inside.  She rests now in the De’Arnise family Graveyard where I will rest beside her, and Tyris, when this life brings me to my end. I long for that day.  My pain is bitter.  I can’t even bare to expand upon it like I have the others.  For a moment I thought that, maybe, finally…

I remember Mazzy, the Halving we rescued from the Shadow Lords clutches, mentioning that she hailed from Trademeet. I thought we might go to Trademeet for a visit.  De’Arnise seems to be secure w/Major Domo handling affairs both internal & external to the castle.  I was curious to visit Trademeet & I had the sense that it might be a strategic pause to reset before finishing Bodhi in her lair.

However, there’s no rest for the weary it seems as we walked straight into a battle between the Trademeet Militia led by a Militia Captain & wild animals of all types, e.g., Panthers, Dogs, etc.  We assisted & brought the contest to quick conclusion & were directed by the Militia Captain to see the Mayor of Trademeet for more information on local happenings. Turns out there were two issues; 1) a duo of Dao Djinn’s were monopolizing the trade coming into Trademeet & 2) the animal attacks were of an unknown source but I was asked to speak w/a Druid the town had in custody, more for his own safety than b/c he was considered a culprit. I visited the Djinn’s but decided not to play games w/them. Rather I challenged them, they accepted & they perished, thus, restoring trade to Trademeet.

Finished w/the Djinn, I met w/the Druid, Cernd by name. He was obviously not the source of the animal problems & I agreed to meet him in the ‘Druid Grove’ that he pointed out on my map to investigate what was going on. Finding him was a little challenging, especially tangling w/various species’ of Trolls that were in & around a Troll Mound in a forest thick w/swampy vegetation & undergrowth.  The first time we ventured in we defeated two Trolls & two Ice Trolls, a Sword Spider, a Phase Spider, a Giant Spider & three ‘big’ Spiders. Nearer the Troll Mound we faced & defeated two Spirit Trolls & two Trolls but had to return to town b/c both Imoen & Amber had been significantly wounded & were unconscious from blood loss.  After resting & healing, I led us back, intent on killing the remainder of Trolls in the Troll Mound.  I wondered if there might be a ‘Troll King’ or something inside the mound but there was not. Instead, we entered & drew out a Spirit Troll, two Trolls & an Ettercap before entering the Troll Mound itself where we mopped up another Spirit Troll, a Spectral Troll, two Giant Trolls & three Trolls. Continuing deeper into the swampy overgrowth we dealt w/two more Trolls before realizing we were getting closer & closer to an answer as we were attacked by & defeated a Shadow Druid leader, a higher level Shadow Druid, a Shadow Druid Mage, two Shadow Druid Knights,    four Shadow Druids & three additional trolls.  We learned during these battles that it was Faldorn who was behind the hostility & unrest in the animals around Trademeet.  Faldorn is the same Shadow Druid we’d crossed paths w/& allowed to live when we were chasing the Bandit’s in the Cloakwood.

Eventually we entered into an opening in the thickets where there was a bridge leading to a cottage and another leading across to the entrance to the Druid Grove. Cernd was just the other side of the bridge.  We talked w/him & decided to go w/him to challenge for the grove & take control of it from the Shadow Druids.  Leaving Keldorn @ the Druid Grove entrance to watch our rear, we headed in & confronted Faldorn.  I didn’t know what would happen but it turned out we’d just be bystanders while Cernd challenged Faldorn in a pit.  We were completely unable to affect the battle in favor of Cernd.  Cernd got crushed by Faldorn but in the heat of things I was in such a hurry that I neglected to have Anomen cast Raise Dead on him which would have returned him to consciousness so that he could challenge her anew.  It was a huge mistake b/c it enabled Faldorn to hold the Druid Grove w/o me or my followers having any way of affecting her supremacy.  She is invulnerable in the Druid Grove & can only be defeated in the Challenge Pit by another Druid.  I let my followers down w/my snap decision & I let the people of Trademeet w/the fear of a resurgent Faldorn causing them strife again.  We destroyed her Adherents, Mages, Knights, Shadow Druids throughout the swamp & defeated her attendants inside the Grove, i.e., two Shadow Druid Adherents & two Shadow Druids as well as a Greater Rakshasa & two Rakshasa’s in the cottage & two Spore Colonies & six Myconids just outside the Grove.  She is isolated but…not dead.

FALDORN ESCAPES

Key Event: I returned to Athkatla angry w/myself for failing the people of Trademeet.  I immediately decided it was time to finish Bodhi once & for all & retrieve the Rhynn Lanthorn for the Elves of Suldanesseller. I’d already struck an alliance w/Drizzt for the battle & had his guarantee that he’d meet me in Bodhi’s lair.  Next I approached the Temple of Helm in the Temple District but even w/Anomen in my retinue they would only pledge neutrality although they pointed me to the Paladin’s of the Order of the Radiant Heart.  I was headed there anyway, as both Keldorn & Anomen had suggested we would receive aid there.  We did.

So alongside, Drizzt Do’Urden & HIS Companions of the Hall (a Dwarven Warrior King, a human male Barbarian, a human female fighter & a Halving Rogue) in addition to four Paladin’s of the Order led by Sir Eric Vanstraaten I led MY followers on what turned out to be an all-out assault. Together the 15 of us defeated four Vampiress’, five Vampires, one Fledgling Vampiress’, three Grimwarders, a handful of Dire Wolves & numerous Giant Rats. Likely we destroyed another four or five Vampiress’ in The Bloodbath in the Graveyard District. Just as it became evident that Amber’s skills were significantly increased (Amber/21) she was trapped in a hallway & surrounded by Vampiress’.  I knew there was no way to get to her, or Imoen for that matter, but I never considered that she’d be lost to me forever. Both she & Imoen fell there but Amber could not be Raised as her wounds were too significant.  I was not about to stop chasing Bodhi & in my anger & vengeance I chased her to the bottom of her lair where we mowed through the Grimwarders & destroyed Bodhi Forever!!!  (Gawain/19, Auren/18, Imoen/22, Anomen 13/13). And just like that my dear little sister was herself again!

BANISHING BODHI TO THE ABYSS FOREVER!!!

I returned us immediately to De’Arnise to bury Amber so that she’d always be close to me but I’d no time to pause.  I needed to decide between Valygar & Mazzy (Ftr/18, SB*****, SSwd*****) to give us back the strength we were short w/o Amber’s Long Bow.  I chose to visit Mazzy in Trademeet hoping that my failure in the Druid Grove would not set her against joining w/me.  I remembered that she carried a mean-looking Short Bow when we’d rescued her & I was glad she readily joined w/me.  From an alignment perspective she fits perfectly w/Keldorn & Anomen – almost like a Halving Paladin.

Wrecking Crew {13} - dwarf fighters (update 3)

Returning to Athkatla the Crew went straight to the Graveyard.  They cleared the tombs (running away to avoid the Crypt King's horror).  Pai'Na survived long enough to cast a chaos, but they dodged that as well and she didn't get another chance.
Spoiler
I was trying to kill all the spiders before resting, but there was still one left when Baby Face shouted I need to rest NOW - and successfully did so (the SCS spider not following outside).
Spoiler
Still not thinking clearly after Bugsy's demise I then rested a number of times to heal up - realising in the middle of that, too late, that I hadn't picked up Pai'Na's equipment.  There will thus be no Kitthix to help the gang out.  That didn't stop them from clearing the Southern Tombs though - Azuredge being their not-so-secret weapon for that.
Spoiler

On the way to the Bridge District they beat up an SCS ambush,
Spoiler
getting several suits of plate mail in the process to ensure everyone is equipped with that as a minimum.  They ensured the kidnappers would be out of action in future before defeating another ambush on the way back to the Promenade.

At the Den of the Seven Vales they obtained a second suit of plate armour, although Mad Dog got taken down to a single HP by Smaeluv during that.  Brennan was left to last before being surrounded and slaughtered to stop him running away with the invisibility ring.
Spoiler

Still on the lookout for armour upgrades the gang set off next for de'Arnise Hold.  The orog ambush on the way was potentially quite dangerous, but the mage was shut down by an immediate bolt of biting before his buffs fired and with him dead the orogs were no problem.
Spoiler

The trolls proved a major problem there as firing acid / fire arrows normally didn't do enough damage to kill them.  Once they'd left a trail of unconscious trolls behind while going to the golems and picked up Frostreaver things improved somewhat, but it wasn't until they forged the FoA +2 that they were consistently able to kill the trolls.  There were quite large numbers of trolls though and they had a problem when a fresh force of trolls arrived from somewhere or other as they were heading for Glaicas.  Sandwiched between the forces they had to work hard to spread damage around while Carlo helped work through them.
Spoiler
Eventually arriving at Glaicas I was thinking he might give up (remembering MP games in BG2 EE), so used darts of stunning on him.  Mad Dog gleefully took the full plate

For TorGal and co the gang ran back to the previous area and hopped up and down, usually killing one enemy on each trip downstairs.  It could have been nasty if a lot of enemies had followed them back up at once - the largest group that did so was a yuan-ti mage, giant troll and spirit troll, who did a fair amount of damage after Carlo had already been badly injured by TorGal downstairs.
Spoiler
Even when TorGal was on his own though he proved to be a real handful, with characters regularly going for a walkabout due to the effects of Cloak of Fear.  Fortunately his extra-healing potions ran out just in time, with all the party already severely damaged.  That should have been that, but TorGal soaked up over 30 damage before eventually getting up again!
Spoiler

His Cloak of Fear prevented what would otherwise have been an immediate retreat and another session of difficult movement resulted.  They were lucky that no-one else got scared after that and eventually TorGal went down again.  I hadn't expected him to survive the previous time, but just in case he really did need rapid damage 2 of the gang used potions of speed and another Arbane haste.  Of course that immediately proved a waste of resources when TorGal died from the first damage he received!
Spoiler
After healing up Al reported to Nalia and accepted his stronghold.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Al - L10, 89 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm, -14 from Claw), 702 kills, ***** longbow / ** long sword
Carlo - L10, 107 HPs, 741 kills, 3 deaths, ***** flail / ** sling
Baby Face - L10, 97 HPs , 676 kills, 2 deaths, ***** 2-handed sword / ** crossbow
Vito - L10, 101 HPs, 603 kills, 2 deaths, ***** halberd / ** shortbow
Mad Dog - L10, 88 HPs, 538 kills, 2 deaths, ***** axe / ** 2-weapon
Bugsy (chunked at L9)
As the character most likely to be in melee and with the best troll-killing weapon, Carlo took a comfortable lead in kills in that session and is unlikely to lose that now.  Mad Dog now has plate armour and is also often in melee and is catching the others up quickly now.

Congrats to Sir Gawain on defeating Bodhi! Condolences on the loss of Amber.

And congrats to the wrecking crew on defeating Torgal!

Best,

A.

Btw. I love how Carlo has more kills than my entire team combined, even though we've made it further in BG2. And yes: I am counting BG1. Aphril and Adara had about ~60 kills between them in BG1.

@Serg. Can you comment on which version of Imoen we can expect to receive with Aphril and Adara at L14 and Aerie at 12/12?

I found this for reference. So seems in your current state the average is exactly 13. Your might want to have one more level to be sure.

Yes. I've found similar sources. I think we'll be good, although I'm not 100% certain.

That's actually another reason why I recruited Nalia. I wanted to see what I could do defensively with a level 11 character in the context of this party, just in case we end up with L11 Imoen. It's also a secondary reason why I took the Ring of Wizardy. If we get the L11 version of Imoen, the ring will help her keep up with the rest of the party.

Either way, I think we're ready for Spellhold. We can work with whichever version of Imoen we get.

The only thing that worries me is that Planetar. I hate the idea of having a Planetar in the Telly Field with two party members missing ProMW.

Best,

A.

Quick Note on Aphril's Game:

The journey to Brynnlaw is on hold. Aphril and Adara need to reach level 15 first. I'm not sure how they're going to do that, but they're not leaving until they do.

We need LR, ProMW, and Sequencer.

Best,

A.

Btw. When you get to the Druid Grove, can you do me a favor and pre-buff Cernd a little before the Faldorn fight? I'd be interested in hearing whether his buffs are dispelled.

I don't normally allow recruiting PCs, but thought I should test this - and besides it's so annoying that Cernd won't fight properly outside the party .

Cernd was left with buffs intact for the combat

Buffs_zpsmjdoxhqg.jpg

- not that it did him much good after Faldorn resisted his insect plague in the first fight.

The second time around the insects bit and he was able to win with the help of a summoned nymph.  I did make the mistake however of pre-casting his werewolf token for the second fight - that was stripped from him as part of removing all equipment.  If someone made the same mistake and relied on buffs from equipped items they would obviously disappear.

Hey guys  and girls!

I want to share an interesting take on no reload install.

There is a mod i use that allows cooldowns for spells. http://www.shsforums...temadjustments/

With SCS installed it means mage battles become completly different bc you can't just turn to jelly and wait out until they empty  their spelbooks. You can adjust refresh times for every magic level,(mine is 1 min for 1 level spell , 15 min for 9 level for example). It also solves a problem with resting spam and makes you use spells more freely but with caution.

Maybe someone will try it out too.

PS

Nice stories everyone. Interesting to read. I finished one solo no relopad BG1-BG2 run with scs too with fighter/illusionist.

I would love to participate  too, but my english is a little broken, i am not a native speaker, so sorry if its hard to read. GL everyone

Nice to hear from you Varenikus.  Your english seems fine - please do have a go at the no-reload challenge if you fancy it.  Perhaps you could post a bit more then about the effect of the mod you refer to.

Wrecking Crew {13} - dwarf fighters (update 4)

Back in Athkatla the Fallen Paladins went down not with a whimper, but a bang (as their armour hit the ground).
Spoiler

Moving on to Mae'Var's quests they went to call on Rayic Gethras.  An initial assault got him to near death, but not over it and a mantle + teleport field + sphere of chaos was an effective counter (and worrying considering everyone was vulnerable to disintegrate).  Carlo still managed a couple of hits in melee, but was hit hard in return by a triple fireball sequencer.
Spoiler
Shortly after that though his mantle ran out and elemental damage started to mount up - a bolt of lightning from Baby Face being the last straw.
Spoiler
Reporting back to Edwin there got everyone up to level 11.

Mae'Var's guild was then invaded.  He got a useful chaos away and lightning bolts from a confused Baby Face severely injured Vito, but that wasn't enough to save Mae'Var.

Deciding it was time for another excursion the gang travelled to Trademeet.  Taquee fell before he could buff
Spoiler
and Carlo then led the attack on the other genies while Al went to buy the scroll of stone to flesh needed .
Spoiler
Interestingly, I noticed when Vito was stoned that the silver pantaloons he was carrying were transferred to Al, but the gold ones were not - what's the good of half a wardrobe!

With the party fully functioning again they talked to Cernd before heading for the Grove.  There was an early casualty there when Carlo was webbed by a giant spider with a horde of other spiders fighting for the kill and the others couldn't do damage quite quickly enough to save him.
Spoiler
Trolls, an elemental and a group of druids were hacked down before Kyland Lind found himself short of words.
Spoiler
The help of some trolls was not enough to save the spore colonies
Spoiler
and Belm was handed over to Mad Dog (as the only character who sometimes dual wields).  Ihtafeer was left for now, but the remaining enemies in the Grove were soon cleared.  Faldorn's magic resistance meant that Cernd needed a couple of attempts to kill her.
Spoiler

Back in Trademeet Tiris and the tomb were added to the gang's list of achievements and they celebrated by purchasing various items.  They were still short of a couple of suits of full plate though, so went to launch a surprise assault on Captain Dennis.  That worked nicely, with both casters failing to buff, and making the rest of the fight a formality.
Spoiler

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Al - L11, 92 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm, -14 from Claw), 727 kills, ***** longbow / ** long sword
Carlo - L11, 121 HPs (incl 11 from ioun stone), 794 kills, 4 deaths, ***** flail / ** sling
Baby Face - L11, 100 HPs , 699 kills, 2 deaths, ***** 2-handed sword / ** crossbow
Vito - L11, 104 HPs, 624 kills, 2 deaths, ***** halberd / ** shortbow

Welcome to the forum, Varenikus! And congrats on your no reload success. If you ever feel ready for another run, please do join us. Some of our regular forumites are non-native English speakers, and others, such as myself, just have no idea how to use the English language even though we were born into it. This isn't English 101. It's summer vacation. And school is never going back into session.

Feel free. Post. Share and enjoy. This is about fun and friendship, not shame and judgement.

The mod you recommended seems interesting. It could unbalance the game with improper settings, but it could also add realism, depending on how it's used. As for me, I basically ignore the game days, and don't really think of resting as resting. I think of it as, like, meditating to recover ones powers. I know that sounds terribly vague -and terribly stupid- but I'm content with it. The RP effect ends up being the same as that of the mod you mentioned, in a sense, with the distinction being that you still have to abide by the in game restrictions. Still, the cool down mod is an interesting approach to ability recharge. Maybe someday in the not too distant future you'll demonstrate it for us in a run. That might be interesting.

Once again, welcome Varenikus! And thanks for the suggestion!

Best,

A.

Btw. If you wanted to post in your native language, with concise English commentary,  I, personally, wouldn't mind. I see no reason why the thread needs to be mono-lingual. Those who speak your native language may appreciate it.

Grond0, Alesia_BH,

thank you for the warm welcome!

Maybe i'll start a new run soon, but it would be in the bg1 thread first. I am thinking what character to pick. Have you guys tried cleric/thief? I know Alesia is a thief master :). I am a little afraid to go solo without arcane magic

Grond0, Alesia_BH,

thank you for the warm welcome!

It's our pleasure. We're always happy to see new faces.  :)

Maybe i'll start a new run soon, but it would be in the bg1 thread first.

Awesome! Glad to hear it! And I'm glad you've decided to do the full Trilogy. That's the way to go, I think.

I haven't tried a cleric/thief, but the build has always appealed to me. Blackraven has some experience with C/Ts. He may comment.

I'll also note that the fourth Trilogy success in the thread's history was completed with a C/T. The same player, Frabjous, also ran a C->T through the old Ascension solo challenge. It's a capable build. I'd be interested in seeing one. I'm sure I'm not alone there.

I am a little afraid to go solo without arcane magic

I know, right? I've had many BG1 successes with non-Arcane characters, and a few BG2 success with non-Arcane characters, but all of my Trilogy successes have been with arcane classes: sorcerer, jester, M/T, F/M. But you know, the most memorable and enjoyable runs I've had haven't always been the successes. My bounty hunter run was a blast. My undead hunter run was a joy. My stalker and beast master were great, too. Losing a character doesn't have to mean disappointment. it's about the journey. And, of course, if you make it with a lesser class, the victory will be all the sweeter.

My only advice is not to sweat it. Just go with what speaks to you at this moment, what sounds fun to you at this moment. If you connect with your character and enjoy yourself, you may be pleasantly surprised where that takes you.

We'll be on the lookout for your character, Varenikus!

Best,

A.

you are so right, in life in general failures and sad moments are what we remember better. In BG, my most memorable one was during no reload game, Keldorn, Anomen and I were in hell and during the fear trial Keldorn got imprisoned by the elder orb, and i had no scrolls of freedom. I was so sad because dude got family, kids, he went to help a friend, the last thing before settling down and got imprisoned in hell for eternity - much scarier fate then death. Not to mention his dispell ability was very handy :)

Interesting info about C/T!

Thanks again, Alesia!

Hell without an arcane character is VERY scary... if you run into Puk at the fai I'll get the drinks and we can sign songs about his good deeds?

Quad multiplayer attempt 4.

Watchers Keep is next on the agenda. Two Vampiric Wraiths and a Wandering Horror do their worst.
- Brazil is level-drained and the party retreat.
- Corheal is level-drained and the party retreat again.
- Strofe is stunned, Corheal and Brazil are drained. The Horror switched to Brazil and the stun was only a couple of rounds so Strofe survived.

Here we see Aphril, Adara, Aerie, and Nalia all full buffed...

Alecia, who is Adara, a self-made NPC or a mod?

Nice party. Sure wish I had Nalia or Aerie w/me but I chose to get them chunked.  :(

Looks like you're going w/four?  Hmm. That combo (incl Imoen) with Nalia (five) would be hell to deal w/once the bad guys start taking spell fire.  Cool stuff. CKT

Welcome Varenikus!  Your English is fine b/c I can tell exactly what that mod does & I DON'T LIKE IT.   :o Yikes. W/o a Mage I'd be hosed if I couldn't let them run out of ammo.  lol

Again, welcome!  CKT

I haven't been to hell  in quite a few years b/c I've been travelling BG/TotSC & skipping Athkatla b/c my PCs kept dying before I got there.

Your post just reminded me of the locale where the PC gets to select certain NPCs to return & travel w/them. Maybe I can get a Mage back that's been lost to me.

Woohoo!  Thanks.   :wizard:  CKT

Makes sense. Failures can be memorable. Not that there's anything wrong with success, mind you.

For me, in this context, the issue is how you define success. I consider a run a success if: 1) I had fun playing; 2) I had fun posting; 3) people had fun reading my posts. That's it. That's success to me. And those conditions can be satisfied with or without a victory over Mel. Winning is having fun and helping others have fun. That's all. Mel is irrelevant.

Thanks again, Alesia!

Not a problem, Varenikus. There's no need to thank me. Pay it forward by sharing your adventures with us, and welcoming other newcomers when they arrive. We're happy to have you with us.

Best,

A.
