Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: Spellhold Labyrinth (or Tragedy Strikes)

To date, Aphril and Adara have cruised through BG2 with nary a hiccup. But they got their first taste of adversity in the Spellhold Labyrinth. Proximately, the culprit was a greater mummy. The true villains, however, were Laziness and Stupidity.

It all started when I saw a ghast where I expected to see a yuan-ti mage, just outside of Dace's library.

Spoiler

Having found a lesser spawn, I began to seriously doubt whether I would find the greater mummy/lich crew near the library. Despite suffering from fatigue, I decided to prepare for the worst, but that tinge of doubt led me to be a little more casual than I usually am. Unsurprisingly, that led to an error. I had neglected to set Aphril and Adara's Sequencers prior to resting, and it wasn't until halfway through the excruciatingly long buffing sequence that I realized the sequencers were missing. That was kind of a big deal. If we did get the greater mummy/lich spawn, our plan had been to immediately unload Skull Trap x 3 sequencers on the greater mummies and then settle in for the multi-round fight with the lich. Unfortunately, Adara doesn't have the L3s to buff herself and Aphril and load a Sequencer too. And so we were robbed of one of our key tactical tools. I considered resting, setting the sequencers, resting again, and then rebuffing, but then I thought: you know, I really don't want to go through all that trouble, and we're probably not even going to get the greater mummies; we didn't even get yuan-ti mages; let's just do this. I loaded Aphril's Sequencer with Skull Trap x 3 and Adara's with Teleport Field x 3. We entered the library and what did we find? Greater mummies and a lich. Bummer.

The lich didn't worry me. The greater mummies did. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who has a healthy respect for those things. Their on hit disease does 13 damage per second for 5 rounds. On insane, double that. Under haste, double that again. It's basically an insta-kill effect. If you are diseased, you're dead. That's it. That's ok, I thought. Three Skull Traps, with a little follow up should take them out of the picture. We'll ice the greater mummies, lay down a Teleport Field for the skeleton warriors and then punk the hapless lich. That could have worked. But that's when Stupidity joined the fray alongside Laziness. Together, they were unstoppable.

Here we see the Skull Traps en route to the greater mummies. But damn you Stupidity: You made me pull Adara's Teleport Field Sequencer a little too soon...

Spoiler

The greater mummies were swept away before the Skull Traps could land. The greater mummies were now completely uninjured and swirling around the teleport field. Ok. Now what are the odds that a greater mummy lands a hit in a triple teleport field against a character with an AC in the mid negative teens? And what are the odds that that character would be Adara, the one member of the team who lacks ProMW and or negative saves v death? And what are the odds that Adara, who had a save v death of 3 would fail her save if she were hit? And what are the odds that a greater mummy -after being swept into the library by the Teleport Field- would open the door on his own to launch a sneak attack? I don't know what the odds were, but it happened, and Adara paid the price. She died within 1/3rd of a round. She only had time to run a few meters in panic. That was the first death of the run. And the first injury to Adara since early BG1. Aphril remains uninjured, at least.

Spoiler

Sigh. But at least the lich fell soon after. And the mummies weren't allowed to create any more mischief.

Spoiler

Adara was raised and we sallied forth to dace.

Spoiler

Finishing up quickly now....

Against Dace, a pre-emptive False Dawn took Cloud of Bats out of the picture.

Spoiler

Triple yuan-ti mage battles are always fun.

Spoiler

Imoen is looking forward to forging Gessen. ProMW foiled Clay Golem Cursed Wounds.

Spoiler

Let that be a lesson, everyone. No matter how powerful a party may be -no matter how ironclad a strategy may seem- Laziness and Stupidity will always remain dangerous foes. Hopefully they won't strike again.

Best,

A.

Personally I have an Excel file with all my caster's buffing spells and their duration according to caster's levels. Then I just sort'em out from longest duration to shortest and build a buffing sequence for everyone so I haven't miss something. Once you get used with the order all is going on autopilot.

Makes sense, Serg. I too have the order worked out based on casting time, and I have a routine which mitigates error risk. We do checks at three stages during the buffing routine. Still: errors are possible- especially during long late night sessions. Autopilots can crash.

The touchiest one is Spell Immunity. It's really easy to screw that spell up with a misclick.

A.

Quick Note on Aphril's Game:

Ok. I just realized something. Following the fight with the Pirate Lord, Saemon Havarian didn't appear. I assumed this was a bug, and since I didn't know the console codes for the boat ride, I just CLUAed the party to the City of Caverns. But now that I've checked Adara's character record, and have noticed that Saemon Havarian is Adara's most powerful vanquished, I understand what really happened. Saemon had gotten caught in the crossfire. He died. That's why he didn't cast off the mains.

Unless Aerie is hiding her credentials as a pirate captain, the party should never have set sail. By rights, they shouldn't be in the City of Caverns. They should have been forced to take the portal to the Underdark. I'm thinking I should go back to a pre-City of Caverns save and take the portal.

Best,

A.

EDIT: I've reverted to a pre-City of Caverns save. We'll take the portal. That's clearly what should have happened. Since I've come to expect wonkiness in relation to Saemon's boat, I just leapt to a conclusion. I had never noticed that Saemon was killable in that encounter.

I have to say that I'm jealous of the Wrecking Crew. They're chugging right along with a with a far simpler and more deliberate approach. If complexity is a sin, we are sinners and they are saints.

I see - that small margin of error we have talked about for casters applies to this run too. Gotcha - in that case, I hope you don't get a lapse of concentration...As for the Wrecking Crew, a single dwarven fighter is tough, as anyone who uses the Korgan character can attest - but in Grond0's case, he has 6 of them - that has to be good! Kind of like a single paladin can be poweful, but my all paladin runs had 6 of them...although the trilogy success was only 5 paladins and a cleric/thief.

Yes. A single slip up could end the run. That said, we've taken very little damage in BG2. Aerie has taken one Melf's Minute Meteor, one tick of Cloudkill, and one breath weapon hit from the steam mephit over by the aerial view of the slums in the Planar Sphere.  Adara was diseased after a laughably improbable string of events. Aside from that, there have been no injuries. One of the injuries was attributable to the Sunfire bug. The others could definitely have been avoided. In Alanis's run, the party went injury free from Yaga Shura through the endgame.

The Wrecking Crew, in contrast, has been battered and bruised, and yet, they're better positioned to recover if a slip up occurs. They'll get hurt, but they can also afford to get away with a mistake every now and then. We can't.

Best,

A.

Wrecking Crew {13} - dwarf fighters (update 7)

If you want to read about mistakes by the Crew - and how they can somehow survive them - read on.

The gang went into the dungeon and smacked down Ruhk before I remembered they were supposed to have a date with some liches.
Spoiler

Back in Athkatla they bought some scrolls of PfU along with a few other goodies, such as Vhailor's Helm, before going to call on the City Gates lich.  The intention there was to surround it and hack it down before it could buff.  However, I was interrupted during preparations by a phone call and didn't then realise until too late that the icon on Vito's record was not PfU, but the similar looking mind shield.  The result was a rather nasty greeting by the lich!
Spoiler
However, Carlo did a good job of focusing part of his attention and spells like symbol death were wasted on the gang, while a teleport field, sphere of chaos and cloudkill were all aimed at Carlo and missed the others.  It was a good job the lich didn't just spam ADHWs, like the 5 in a row that killed one of my swashbucklers not so long ago there.  A second cloudkill cast at Carlo unfortunately got everyone else as well when he was teleported towards them just as the cloudkill cast.  After waiting out 5 PFMWs though the lich was finally vulnerable - at a cost of a potion of magic shielding, 3 of regeneration, a couple of invulnerabilities and a scroll of protection for poison.  The lich died with Carlo and Mad Dog still grimly hanging on and the wall of force dissipated just in time to avoid any deaths.
Spoiler

With his DUHM long since gone Al had to use a storm giant strength potion to get Daystar before the gang moved straight to the Bridge District.  They paid the temple there for healing and bought a couple more PfU scrolls to replace those dispelled in the previous fight.  Then they attacked the Elemental Lich - as was intended with the one at the City Gates he didn't have time to buff.  He did though manage to die from excessive damage, while the Shade Lich took the coward's way out.
Spoiler

Moving on to Kangaxx I wanted the demi-lich to be near the exit when it appeared.  The original form therefore was allowed to survive an initial assault, though the gang ran away when he summoned a dark planetar.  After a bit of waiting some manoeuvring then got Kangaxx within Azuredge range of the exit and his initial form died there.
Spoiler
The demi-lich then followed them invisibly up the stairs, which was a problem as everyone was vulnerable at that stage, but fortunately Baby Face saved against his attempt to Trap the Soul.  Going up and down then allowed Al to attack with  Daystar (while the others took potions of invulnerability to get their saving throws to -6 to protect them from repeated attempts).
Spoiler
Kangaxx was still far from helpless, with access to a number of fast-casting spells that could have caused problems.  However, he didn't manage to find anything troublesome and died of a Daystar overdose.
Spoiler

Al splashed out on a quiver full of dispelling arrows before the gang returned to Windspear.  In the dungeon there Carlo thinned out the undead opposition a bit with a first use of a sunray,
Spoiler
but there were still a number of ancient and elder vampires attacking him.  Carlo did a good job of occupying most of their attention, with the aim of allowing the others to pick off the attackers.  That was made much harder though when Mad Dog was dominated early on.  When he eventually came to his senses he took a potion of immortality to prevent it happening again and sent Azuredge winging in to finish off the remaining undead.
Spoiler

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Al - L13, 98 HPs (incl. 5 from Helm, -14 from Claw), 899 kills, ***** longbow / *** long sword
Carlo - L13, 116 HPs, 961 kills, 4 deaths, ***** flail / ** sling / * bastard sword
Baby Face - L13, 106 HPs , 830 kills, 5 deaths, ***** 2-handed sword / *** crossbow
Vito - L13, 110 HPs, 756 kills, 2 deaths, ***** halberd / *** shortbow
Mad Dog - L13, 106 HPs (incl 9 from ioun stone), 731 kills, 2 deaths, ***** axe / ** 2-weapon / * long sword

Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: The Underdark (or Where My Dreams Are All Too Clear)

Ok. Time for some concise coverage of the Underdark. (And yes: That is another Human League reference.)

Kill and Bury

The Deep Gnome village Baalor fought well, refusing to be pinned behind the Avariel Tank of Doom.

Spoiler

Nonetheless, with a LR x 3 Trigger and three Skull Trap x 3 Sequencers trained at him, he wasn't long for this world.

Spoiler

Mystery Solved?

I finally figured out why mages in my game appeared to be running mystery specific protections. To avoid crashes, I had to disable the ToBEX Mirror Image fix. $5 says the buff list notifications are fine, and its Mirror Image that's occasionally foiling my AoE spells. @Crevs or any other Mac user. Have you figured out a way to get the Mirror Image fix without the crashes?

Spoiler

Have I Told You Lately That I Hate You?

Have I ever mentioned that I hate Kuo-Toans? Who but a Kuo-Toan would roll into the Deep Gnome inn and ambush an unbuffed party. This was actually kind of scary. It's not like you can just quaff a Potion of Invisibility around these blokes.

Spoiler

Payback. This time you get ambushed.

Spoiler

And FYI everyone: Aphril is now running Fire Shield: Blue in combat just so that I can tell her apart from everyone else. Aside from Aphril, can you tell who is who- even with the tab info hints?

Spoiler

Why Drow Hate the Sun

Drow hate the Sun because the uber-drow killing spell Sunfire is named after it. Adara popped a Trigger to the north, Aphril to the south. Shortest ambush ever.

Spoiler

Why Drow Aren't All Bad

Say what you want about the Drow, but they at least get one thing right.  :P

Spoiler

I'm actually going to try to finish the Dragon Egg quest this time. It's been over a decade since I've gotten this right. Wish us luck!

Best,

A.

I had a horrifying moment with Kua-Toans.

In my Picenon #5 run, I forgot that the Kua-Toas (or maybe I just didn't know) can't be fooled by stealth or invisibility. So my brililiant plan was to avoid them and go straight to the Underdark Exit - problem? They did indeed see Picenon and gave chase, and so I had 15 Kua-Toas pounding on him. It was one of my scariest solo moments I ever had. Only the few superior healing potions from Watcher's Keep allowed him to survive that encounter. He got down to 10% health more than once, was nail-biting.

You mean in the Deep Gnome village? There was just the one, thankfully. Apparently he had survived an earlier fight and had followed at a distance, only arriving after we woke up. If it were a whole crew that seriously could have gotten dicey.

In this case it was fine. Aerie intercepted the ambusher with the Reflex. Aphril and Adara had ProMW.

Yeah. They're nasty for thieves. Congrats on surviving!

Btw. Does anyone remember my solo run with Alora, and how I abandoned it in the Underdark?

That was basically because I didn't want to solo the Kuo-Toan tunnels with Alora. And can anyone blame me? Rabbits foot or no, that would have been un-fun.  :P

FYI: In case anyone is wondering about the occasional Human League references, Adara and Aphril are loosely based on Joanne and Susan.

I had at one point considered creating a trio with a C/M based on Philip, but I decided to go with Aerie instead.

Musically the 80s ain't my decade (too plastic for me, with few exceptions) nor Human League my kind of band, so most of your references are lost on me. But I really appreciate it when people make this type of references for others to pick up. Props for that  :wizard:

Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: The Underdark (or Where My Dreams Are All Too Clear: Part 2)

Continuing coverage of the Underdark. Let's make this quick, shall we?

The Misguided

With the team's standard buffs  active, the only danger here was that Boz might hit someone with his halberd, if he chose to wield it. The Dragon's Breath halberd does 1 point of acid damage, and 1 point of poison damage. We are still vulnerable to both. Fortunately, an Adara trigger took Boz down before he could hurt anyone. Aerie was forced to take a precautionary ProMW, however.

Spoiler

Damien, who somehow survived Adara's Trigger, caught a Sequencer from Aphril, followed by Magic Missiles when he next revealed himself.

Spoiler

I Need a Hero

For once, one of my characters served Phaere well in her hour of need. A double teleport field mitigated risk from devour brain. Chaotic Commands and negative saves handled Psionics. Happily, the mind flayers were gracious enough to Maze both Phaere and Soulafein, simplifying the task.

Screen%20capture%207_zps72b2oc2u.jpg

Imoen was hit by a brain draining attack, but since she had been buffed with a Potion of Genius and a Potion of Mind Focusing, she never got below 19 (Btw. That reminds me: I really should have bought those two Potions of Fortitude in Brynlaw for the raid on Bodhi's lair....).

Spoiler

Qilue's Brain: Chilled

Aphril considered joining the anti-bullying movement championed by Corey, but instead she chose to nix Qilue. It's been a while since I've done this fight, and I wanted to see what the fuss is about.

Of course, Aphril's crew isn't a fair test: they're very hard to stop. No damage was taken, as usual. Pre-buffs, True Sights, Removes, and Sunfires allowed the party to march through the drow servants.

Spoiler

Spoiler

Qilue did a nice job of using buffs, regeneration, and dimension doors to stay in the game, but eventually she was killed by Breach (scroll)->Trigger from Aphril

Screen%20capture%2012_zps8uuaqwt9.jpg

A Sequencer from Imoen finished the summoned fodder.

Spoiler

We're making solid progress on the Dragon Egg Quest, but there are still plenty of opportunities to screw it up...

Best,

A.

Now what?

Long time since I've been here.  So Jon is dead & I'm in hell.  Doesn't seem right.  But I digress.  So, I killed the dragon in the cave to the left (Pride) & I'm getting ready to fight whatever is behind the Fear Demon.  Here's the rub.

I messed around w/the big door after I killed the dragon (after Resurrecting Anomen - RoR & Raise Dead on Keldorn).  I immediately leveled up & gained a 2nd HLA.

Mazzy's (who Irenicus chunked) equipment ended up on the ground but that's not the issue.

I BECAME LAWFUL EVIL! Me!!

I was gonna try to 'weather that storm' & keep my mouth shut. But now I'm facing the Fear Demon & he's offering me a Cloak made from the skin of slain Nymph's. Lawful Evil would take it.  But I have a Lawful Good Watcher of Helm/Fighter of the Order, his mentor a Paladin of the Order, Auren who is Neutral Good but definitely Good & Imoen.  To stay in character I take the cloak but it's repulsive.

Just tell me one thing.  Was I supposed to become LE?  If I was, I'll grab the cloak...but I sure don't want to.  CKT

A good-aligned PC must choose all the good (as in benevolent) options in Hell in order to maintain their alignment. Slaying a good-natured dragon is unortunately not one of them. Any evil choice, even one, leads to getting an evil alignment, unless you play with the Revised Hell Trials mod (which takes a more nuanced approach) but it seems you don't.
Becoming LE doesn't oblige Lord Gawain to always choose evil roleplaying options imo. E.g. he can have a violent nature, too violent at times to be considered 'good', but at the same time have good intentions in various situations. From a roleplaying perspective I'd find it incredible if slaying the dragon pulled Lord Gawain completely over to the dark side, after all he's accomplished and learned.

Imo it's up to you. Your current run has a strong emphasis on role-play. If in your perception Lord Gawain's dragonslaying didn't make him evil, you could Shadowkeeper him into another alignment. For a Paladin a simple (but consequential) mistake might have repercussions, but Gawain is not a Paladin.

I think Gawain started out as a Neutral character no? If you want some kind of consequences for his action, you could change him back to Neutral. The Hell Trials aren't all equally indicative of Charname's moral compass. I understand that sacrificing a companion (or commoner) in order to not lose a Dex point is pretty evil, but what about killing wraith Sarevok, is that evil too?
I can't remember the dialogues with the demon and the dragon that you killed. Maybe the demon deceived him? Maybe he somehow mistook the dragon for an evil creature?

My dilemma is that I've always wanted to play a LG Fighter all the way thru.  Now, I'm standing on the precipice & almost a year (August 24th 2014) since I started him & he's lost his alignment.

The other things that tears @ me is that I've made a point of playing a Charname that knows lots about monsters, demons, dragons in the realm.  I had no clue that this was a good dragon...or not an evil one. As much time as I've spent describing dragons and demons, etc., I would think my PC would know before he made the mistake.  I looked it up & it says it was a Green Dragon. In my MMs these guys are LE.

I think maybe, I'll fight the evil (much like I have the evil essence of Bhaal) & as I make good choices going forth (with the support and encouragement of my party), I'll reclaim it.  Like I said, I've been playing this guys since August last year.  Ugh.

Solid stuff Alesia! I wish I had a funny reference for you, but none of the Human League Greatest Hits seemed workable :/

Thanks, Blackraven.

And there's no need for a Human League reference. The cool thing to do would have been to say nothing and then quietly start playing Tears for Fears...

(I'm kidding: please don't play Tears for Fears. Please.)

Sorry to hear about Sir Gawain's mixup.

The transgression in the green dragon hell trial is pride. A good and humble warrior would not let the demon goad him into killing a creature just to demonstrate his strength, or so the game would have us believe.

Maybe Sir Gawain is a little prideful? I don't know. But he's still good to me. Fighting the taint, and the evil, makes sense. You can still say no to the cloak.

Best,

A.

I guess I'll give this a try. My WeiDU log is in the spoiler. It's Ascension, Fixpack v10, some convenience tweaks (max HP on level up, 100% spell memorization are the most important), and a light install of SCS v30.

Spoiler

My last couple of runs were melee heavy, so my first entrant will be Jim, the creatively named solo sorcerer.

Spellbook:
1: Blindess, Magic Missile, Protection from Evil, Shield, Chromatic Orb
2: Invisibility, Melf's Acid Arrow, Mirror Image, Blur
3: Melf's Minute Meteors, Remove Magic, Skull Trap
4: Improved Invisibility, Stoneskin

Jim completed BG1, but I won't be covering that since I don't like BG1 very much. It was also a couple months ago so I don't remember if it was no-reload.

Part 1: Jim vs. Irenicus's Dungeon and Some Gnome
Jim begins by dismissing Imoen, freeing Minc and Jaheira, allowing them join for the XP, and them dismissing them. I then notice that Jim still has 12 castings of level 1 spells since he was wearing the Ring of Wizardry when I exported him. He only use 4 of them before his first rest, so it doesn't matter. Jim uses invisibility to turn of the mephit generator, ignore the genie, and enter the room with the sewage golem. He's guarded by a radiant mephit, so Jim takes the time to clear the goblins outside with a skull trap. The radiant mephit comes running and Jim kills it with meteors and magic missiles before it can do anything. Jim then uses the same tools to kill the goblins and the otyugh on route to the dryads. His stoneskins and mirror images allow him to grab the Claw of Kazgaroth and the Metaspell Amulet without taking damage before resting near the dryads.
Spoiler

After clearing the library, Jim uses invisibility to free the djinni in the bottle. The resulting XP levels him up to 10 and he takes sunfire as his first level 5 spell.

Spoiler

He then rests and takes on Ilyich fully buffed. He opens things up with a skull trap and then finishes the mage with magic missile and meteors. A sunfire clears the rest of the duegar and softens up Ilyich. The duegar decided the use their ranged weapons so they had very little chance of hitting Jim, especially once I remembered to have him cast shield.

Spoiler

Jim rests again before grabbing the portal key. I didn't remember where the traps were so Jim takes some damage from a fireball, but otherwise makes it out safely with the key and the monster summoning scroll. Jim uses the scroll to summon a distraction for the mephits on the next floor, but only gets a single ogrillon. Fortunately, it still does a good enough job of pulling the mephits away from their portals so Jim can meteor them down. Good thing that they can't call for help.

Spoiler

Meteors take down the escaped clone as well, who has a nice invisibility potion. Jim collects the wands and the ring of protection, but I guess I forgot to grab the lightning key and Jim gets zapped.

Spoiler

In any case, Jim kills the rest of the duegar and Frennedan before making an invisible dash to the surface. Jim decides that a carnival would be nice after the past couple of days, but only discovers more jerks in need of meteors to the face. Freeing Aerie brings him to the all-important level 11. He receives -2 to all saves and picks resist fear, spell thrust, ice storm, and spell immunity as his new spells. Kalah is defeated without issue.
