Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: Twisted Rune (or Best Served Cold)
With Kangaxx dead and the dragons down, only one SoA side quest remained: the Twisted Rune.
I was a little nervous about this, honestly. I haven't faced the Twisted Rune since Alicia's run and I've never faced the v30 version. The Staff of the Magi is nice, but if it weren't for the need to avenge the Wrecking Crew, I probably would have taken a pass on this. Facing Beholders and Liches at the same time is not my cup.
Ok. To the fight. First of all, for those who would like to claim the Staff of the Magi straight out of the Chateau, you may very well be able to do that still in SCS. Pre-setting Skull Traps at Vaxall and Revenak's positions may still work. And you may still be able to slip by Shangalar and Shyressa with Pro Undead. As for Layenne, you can probably still Cloudkill/Protection from Magic her with some accommodation for SCS behavior. Low level mages may still be able to solo the Rune. I don't know. I didn't try any of that. I was more interested in getting a clean fight.
The buffs for this fight were the party standards with modest adjustment.

The plan in the first stage of the battle was simple: Kill Vaxall. Fast. The reason is clear. There was only one thing that could make this fight dangerous: anti-magic ray. With Vaxall wiping out Spell Shields faster than they could be replaced, Shangalar could become a threat. Without Vaxall by his side Shangalar would be just another helpless lich. With Vaxall by his side, Shangalar would be potentially deadly.
As soon as Vaxall appeared, Aphril fired up Improved Alacrity.

I was not happy when I examined Vaxall's buffs. He had Spell Deflection, SI:A, and comprehensive Specific Protections, amongst others. As soon as I saw that I thought: I sure would like to have Breach in Aprhil's book right now...Two Ruby Rays would clear the way for a Breach or Remove, but Remove is probabilistic and has a slow projectile and the Wand of Spell Striking has a slight but noticeable activation delay. We were going to lose some Spell Shields.
In a flash, Adara and Imoen both lost their Spell Shields. They were forced to withdraw and, further, they couldn't use their auras offensively. And since Aerie's aura was being held in reserve, it was all up to Aphril. I was oh-so-happy when I saw that ProMW Coningency fire, signaling a successful Remove. That meant the end of Vaxall.

Still. There had been casualties. We had lost two Spell Shields: Imoen's and Adara's. Worse still, with his dying breath, Vaxall had tagged Adara with an anti-magic ray. Adara had been compromised. She vanished and withdrew ASAP, but she was still potentially vulnerable. The rest of the team swung into action to protect her. Imoen was using her aura to refresh her Spell Shield, but Aphril launched a Ruby Ray Breach assault, hoping to disrupt Shangalar's Time Stop cast. Aerie got off a Holy Word just before Shangalar's Time Stop could begin.

Shangalar's Time Stop passed uneventfully, perhaps due to Aerie's Holy Word. With Adara safely out of the action, and with Imoen's Spell Shield back up...

Shangalar was overmatched.

Onto Shyressa and Layenne. I made a mistake here. A big one. The intent had been to let Aerie take down Shyressa with the iMoD, ProMW, while her buffs protected her from Layenne. Unfortunately, I had, apparently, moved Aerie just before she has finished recasting SI:A. As a consequence, Aerie saw her buffs dispelled, forcing her to withdraw. Shyressa was now bearing down on the party with no one positioned to stop her. Adara stepped up to the challenge. Power Word: Blind->Imprisonment

After a brief rebuffing session, Layenne's defenses were quickly overwhelmed by a Ruby Ray x 3->Breach assault. A Sunfire Trigger from Adara finished her. Only one question remains: Who gets the new stick? I think Adara deserves it, given her heroic stand against Shyressa and her cagey finish of Layenne. Aphril may have something to say about that though.

A.
