Somebody Give the God a Little Help, Mkay?

Once again, I made the mistake of counting on Rillifane, only to see one of Sunner's buffs, GoI, I believe, foil the Leaflord's instakill. Worse still, Rillifane is too dumb to switch targets. He'll just Spell Ineffective all over Suneer while the demons run amock. I kind of assumed that would be fixed in v30. It should be fixed in v31.

Spoiler

....... Never again will I rely on a god.

Same here! I had exactly the same experience (and disappointment) there myself. Stupid Oaken Brain...

Great show, Alesia! Even if a bit short  :) Poor Jon...

@Grond0:  :D you've made my day!

And thanks, everyone!  :)

Yeah. That needs to be fixed. It's a little crazy that Suneer's pre-buffs stump a god.

At the very least, Rillifane should switch targets.

No. We got two +3 Flails and two Potions of Invisibility, oddly enough.

I'm inclined to CLUA in the amulet. That is a bug, right? There's no reason why we shouldn't have gotten the amulet, right?

First, the buffs. The buffs for this fight were the party standards with minor adjustments, including Hit: ProMW Contingencies all around.

.....

Aerie: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Repulse Undead, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination

BTW, Alesia, what for Aerie has Repulse Undead in this particular fight?

Incidentally, Millen is alive and well, and should be getting to the action tonight. I rarely can make progress on my BG games on Mondays because of Chess Club - combined with dinner and work, there is rarely any time. Tonight I should be able to do though. I probably should get to Umar Hills before the spawns get too bad.

Nice catch, Serg.

That was a typo. I had cut and pasted the buff list from the Twisted Rune post, with the intention of tweaking it to reflect the buffs used against Ire. I neglected to delete the Repulse Undead entry, apparently. I'll fix that and look for any other errors.

Thanks for letting me know!

Best,

A.

EDIT: FIxed. The buff list should be accurate now.

Congratulations Serg (again), epic battle, and Alesia (personally I think it's awesome to finish Irenicus within about a round)!

It's not often that Jon gets his arse handed to him two days in a row :D May you fare as well in ToB!

Alesia (personally I think it's awesome to finish Irenicus within about a round)!

Thanks. But I think the lesson to learn from that fight is that Vecna + Improved Alacrity is overpowered- egregiously so in SoA.

I think the casting speed bonus on Vecna should be nerfed to -2. And I definitely intend to use the move Vecna into ToB component the next time I play.

Best,

A.

Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: Illasera (or Illasera the Not Quick Enough)

If there is one word that puts fear in to the heart of every sorcerer it is this: dispelling arrows. Ok. That's two words. Let me say it a different way: Illasera. Dispelling arrows are death to sorcerers and no one does dispelling arrows better than Illasera. She's deadly.

Unfortunately for Illasera, she was quick but not quick enough. Aphril and her team were faster on the ProMW draw than Ilasera was with her bow. Further, with the torrent of spell equivalent actions that she faced, Illasera had little hope of surviving to see the end of ProMW. She lasted longer than Jonicus, but she didn't last long.

First, the buffs. The buffs for this fight were the party standards with minor adjustments. Of particular note were the Contingencies. I'll start listing them for every fight from now on.

Aphril: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Trap, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Chain Contingency: See Enemy- Projected Image, Protection from Magic Weapons, Protection from Energy

Adara: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Turning, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, True Sight, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Energy Blades, Chain Contingency: See Enemy- Wilting x 3

Aerie: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Righteous Magic, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Globe of Blades, Blade Barrier, Contingency: See Enemy- True Sight

Imoen:  Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire,  Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Pro Pet, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Energy Blades, Contingency: Hit- ProMW, Chain Contingency: See Enemy- Wilting x 2/Mordenkainen's Sword

Here we see the opening. Note that there's a Mordy Sword at the bottom of the screen. There were actually two. The hope was that they would draw Ilasera's attention for the fraction of a round we'd need to get ProMW up. That worked. As a reminder, ProMW is essential in this fight and the manner of casting is important. Casting ProMW before the dialogue cut scene is a bad idea: it can expire before Illasera arrives. Relying on See Enemy- Contingencies is dicey as well: they won't alway go off soon enough. It's better to set Auto-Pause: See Enemy and then immediately cast. Let your Contingencies cover your opening offensive moves.

Spoiler

Everyone took ProMW except for Aerie, who was carrying the Reflex. Aerie made for the Black Reaver Mage and cast Holy Word, which should apply Deafness (50% spell casting failure) without a save.

Spoiler

In this fight, See Enemy Contingencies seem to take forever. Finally they fired. Adara's and Imoen's wiped out the lackey Black Reaver warriors and disrupted the Black Reaver Mage's Time Stop. Aphril's Chain tossed a Projected Image. Here you can see the aftermath of the Contingencies. Note that Aphril's Contingencied PI has fired up Improved Alacrity and has already cast ProMW, II, SI:A, and SI:D: it's ready to go to work. Note also that Illasera has switched to her short sword, since her only non-ProMWed target is wielding the Reflex. That was planned: we wanted to get that bow out of her hands. The Energy Blades are headed for the Black Reaver Cleric.

Spoiler

The Black Reaver Mage caught Ruby Ray x 3->MM + MAA from Aphril's PI. The Black Reaver Cleric fell to Energy Blades from Adara and Imoen and Aerie's Globe of Blades.

Time for everyone to dump on Illasera.

Aphril, with Dragon's Breaths and Wiltings

Yeah. I'm just not sure how to time the application of Aerie, Imoen, and Adara's buffs for the arrival of Jonicus. I'd hate for Jon-Jon to arrive with the SIs either elapsed or not up yet.

Quick Note on Aphril's Game:

Pocket Plane Challenge #1 is complete.

Screen%20capture%2027_zpszuoeyaht.jpg

@Serg. Be careful! Between that ATweaks demons and Bodhi that fight could get nasty. It wasn't bad for us since we had four Pro Undead scrolls locked in with SI:A, but I'm worried about Impish Face and, more precisely, Impish Face's companions.

Best,

A.

Btw. Regarding buffing. We took our long durations, save our Pro Undead scrolls, before triggering the encounter. We summoned a Deva and two Mordies for the fodder, while the party waited invisible SI:D. One rounds into the Drow, we started layering in our short duration buffs and our Pro Undead. Since the ProUndead scrolls were critical, we waited until after SI:A to layer them in. The timing worked out reasonably well.

Aphril, Elven Sorcerer: Pocket Plane Challenge #1

Ok. I know the vanilla players have zero interest in this since PPC #1 is trivial in vanilla, but I thought I'd quickly post for the SCS players.

The buffs for this fight were the party standards with minor adjustments including, notably, Pro Undead Scrolls for Bodhi. Also note the hit Contingencies: they were a significant part of the defensive strategy. They were intended to hedge against the risk that we might time our buffs incorrectly.

Aphril: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Trap, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Protection from Undead, Chain Contingency: Hit- Spell Shield, Protection from Magic Weapons, Protection from Energy

Adara: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Turning, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, True Sight, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Protection from Undead, Chain Contingency: Hit- Spell Shield, ProMW, Spell Turning

Aerie: Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire, Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Spell Turning, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Protection from Undead, Contingency: Hit- Shadow Door

Imoen:  Stoneskin, Protection from Cold, Protection from Fire,  Protection from Lightning, Protection from Magic Energy, Protection from Evil, Chaotic Commands, Resist Fear, Pro Pet, Death Ward, Pro Pet, Spirit Armor, Spell Shield, Spell Deflection, Blur, Mirror Image, Haste, Improved Invisibility, Globe of Invulnerability, Spell Immunity: Abjuration, Spell Immunity: Divination, Energy Blades, Protection from Undead, Contingency: Hit- ProMW, Chain Contingency: Hit- Mislead, Spell Deflection, Spell Shield

As mentioned, the plan was to let summons dispatch the fodder while we waited, invisible/SI:D, for the arrival of the drow, at which time we would buff for Jonicus and Bodhi.

Here we see the Deva going to work on the Kobold Commandos while the party eats popcorn. Someday, I'd like to play without the XP cap in BG1. And on that day, I'd like to farm re-spawning gibberlings until I reach HLA territory. Have you ever rolled into the Nashkel Mines with a Deva or Planetar? I'd like to. I would...(Hmm, no...)   :P

Spoiler

At this point, the drow had arrived. After about one round, we passed out the Pro Undead scrolls and started layering in our short duration buffs.

Spoiler

Bodhi's here! Just in time! Aerie just took her last buff.

Spoiler

Ok. So now here comes Jonicus, right down Jonicus lane. Aphril fires up Improved Alacrity.

Spoiler

Let's see those buffs. Assuming he has specific protections here, he has a magic number of 5. Not bad John. That's respectable. But we have 13 Ruby Rays, 6 Spell Thrusts, 15 Breaches and 4 spell equivalent actions per round- not to mention Improved Alacrity and Vecna. You're totally out gunned.

Spoiler

Sarevok? Sarevok? Are you kidding? Adara, take him out.

Spoiler

Ah, but Jonicus wouldn't go quite so quietly this time. He wears the AoP and Vecna in this fight. He got off a Time Stop.

Spoiler

Unfortunately, he didn't accomplish much here. The v30 script prioritizes debuffing over all else, it seems. It'll try to debuff, then it will bring the demons. But our magic numbers are too high. We can't be debuffed, and so those actions are very nearly wasted. The old script used to summon demons first. And against Aphril that would be the right play. Jon should say: frack it, I'm screwed. I'll never take down their buffs. And I'll never survive their Abjuration assault. But maybe -just maybe- I can give them a little grief with demons and a Planetar. That's what Jon used to do in my old install. I'll note, once again, that I'm very tempted to revert for future runs. Given my playing style -given that I buff to the nines- I'll get better arcane system behavior in a pre 21 setup and all I'll really lose is Con Drain and Cursed Wounds. And does anyone really like Con Drain and Cursed Wounds?

Anyhoo. Time resumes. Aphril fires up Improved Alacrity again. Four Ruby Rays and then some acid stuff while Imoen's Breach is en route to take down the Protection from Magic Energy and Fire Shield: Red. Note also the LR x3 Trigger on its way to Bodhi. She needs a little love now that the Skull Traps and Wiltings are coming soon.

Screen%20capture%2019%205.40.30%20PM_zps

Here we can see another reason why I'm worried about Impish Face. Jonicus gets a Staff of the Magi in this fight. In my install, the invisibility while equipped has been removed, both for the player and PP1 Jonicus. In Serg's, install it has not been removed. It's un-fun to deal with Staff cheese.

Spoiler

Having been stripped, pumped full of Acid Arrows, and brought to Badly Injured, Jonicus caught a Power Word: Blind from Adara. Just cause.

Spoiler

Aphril finishes him with Sunfires.

Screen%20capture%2025%205.40.30%20PM_zps

And, finally, the Pro Undead stumped Bodhi.

Fin!

Screen%20capture%2027_zpsoh8j2xl7.jpg

Easy, huh? For Aphril, maybe. But make not mistake: that fight can be very, very dangerous. Stay strong Impish Face! Take'em down! Keep your team safe!

Best,

A.

Good luck to Aphril and Impish Face in ToB!

Part 11: Jim vs. The Planar Prison and Bodhi's Lair

Alright, back to abusing project image.

Jim at least handles the initial ambush on his own.
Spoiler

But an image handles the yuan-ti group. Ruby rays all around followed by skull traps and sunfires.
Spoiler

In my install the thralls have the strange tendency to wander into the trap in front of where the actors are held. It usually doesn't end well for them.
Spoiler

Jim demolishes the warden in one round. I complained about not having breach before but now that Jim's caster level is high enough to reliably dispel enemies, it doesn't matter as much.
Spoiler

Rescuing the actors gives Jim another level and he takes flame arrow, power word: stun, and an extra level 7 spell per day.

After not getting any wands of spell striking in the previous update, Jim gets two in a row. He would get one more before the end of this one.
Spoiler

Anyway, Jim handles Bodhi's lair by buffing himself with protection from energy ( ;)) and having his images wish for everyone in the area to be horridly wilted. This is probably the solo sorcerer's most shamefully unfair trick, but I had to do it at least once.
Spoiler

Somehow, killing everything in the area without seeing it causes the game to break a little. Jim is able to fight Bodhi without going downstairs first. Sunfires send her packing.
Spoiler

Uh, a bit late for this, buddy.
Spoiler

Jim reports back to Aran Linvail. He'll set sail once I'm sure he's got everything he'll need for the trip.

Yeah. I think we've all done that at least once.

My evil C->M Drella used to use Wilting-for-Everyone to wipe out entire villages. Wilting-for Everyone and Evil Turned Limited Wish Vampires.

And every time I get to Bodhi's lair I find myself tempted. There are just way to many hapless minions there to be bothered with.

Anyhoo. Nice work! I'm liking Jim's chances.

Evil Turned Limited Wish Vampires.

That's one of the few tricks I've never tried. Do you get experience if they kill things via level drain?

Anyhoo. Nice work! I'm liking Jim's chances.

Thanks. I think Jim has a decent chance of making it to ToB, but beyond that I don't know. Even with reloads I was not able to beat the final Ascension fight with a solo sorcerer.
