Aah, sorry about that Golden, and also about your decision to take a break.

In the future, would you consider posting a bit earlier in your adventure? I would have liked reading about your Beastmaster in BG1 and early BG2 for example.

Gaius instead of Gaal makes sense. The latter is a priest after all.

Thanks Golden for your interest in my playthroughs :)

I absolutely agree. And I think I may be partially to blame here.

In Arkona's run, which had started as an install test, I ended up rushing ahead and then posting on the early content after the fact.

In Alikae's run, which also started as a test, I've contemplated doing the same thing.

This is a bad example, I think. Runs are far more interesting when posts are current. The reader should follow the protagonist through each step of the adventure. Each update should feel like breaking news, not a summary of events long passed.

In the interest of discouraging this trend, and returning us to as-it happens coverage, I'll with hold posting on Alikae's current run. If I start a new monk, I'll post on her every step of the way. Sadly, this may mean that I'll never post on a monk since I rarely run the same class twice consecutively, but I do dislike the after-the-fact posting style. I don't want to contribute to that trend.

Gaal is a low-mid level C/M. He has mage spells up to L5.

Best,

A.

Absolutely. That's the great thing about playing thieves. You need to plan, you need to think, you need to stay on your toes.

Corthief's run looks promising! Keep it up!

Best,

A.

Thanks. Um, I'm not sure your "great thing about playing thieves" is that great for me, lol. There are a LOT of enemies in BG 2, and lots in ToB - if I need to plan and think and stay on my toes on every encounter, that sounds rough to me, not great lol.

Regardless though I will give it the old college try, so to speak.

It's potentially fun. As a chess player, it seems like something you could embrace.

Then again, bashing heads is fun, too. And if you're in the mood to bash heads, a thief wouldn't suit.

But maybe you can appreciate why my favorite character is a human bounty hunter? As a thief you're forced to plan, as a human, vulnerable, to disablers, you're forced to improvise. As a bounty hunter, you have the tools to handle any foe. It's fun, challenging, and at the same time workable.

Regardless though I will give it the old college try, so to speak.

Best of luck! Corthief is looking good so far!

Best,

A.

Yes it is fun. However, I like to be courageous and righteous (hence Paladins are my favorite class, in all RPGs) - my thief constantly has to run, which is definitely not my style. I've never had a solo single-class thief in BG 2 before, so this is all new territory. Fortunately, my experience with Picenon (solo fighter/thief) helps some, as some of the strategies used by Picenon, Corthief VIII will able to use.

I forgot to mention one good thing about the Mencar battle was now Corthief VIII has the cloak of non-detection - this might be very useful he thinks.

I can still post on Alikae. She could be the last after-the-fact character, I guess.

She's almost done with SoA, which means we'd have a lot of catching up to do.

How do you remember everything that happens for battles eons ago? Screenshots can tell you many things but I would surprised if that's all you needed to remember all the important details - I know if I don't post soon after a battle (like within a few days), I miss details, even with screenshots.

For example, in my last post, I forgot to mention I tried to backstab an enemy in the Remfeld ambush - but got pinned! (couldn't move). Fortunately an enemy moved and Corthief got the heck out there - with no movement rate advantage, he didn't see a good way to fight these guys, and I don't know the mage script - would hate to be dire charmed or what not.

Some nuances are lost, yes.

But I make a point of taking screenshots of the important things and I know how I play so if I don't remember every detail I can figure out what I need to when I need to.

When it comes to mage battles, which tend to be the most complicated, I basically have a big if-then statement list in my head. If X then A; if X + Y then B; etc. So, for example, right now I'm looking at the pictures from Alikae's fight with the shade lich. In one shot, she's engaged in melee with a summoned demon, using her fists, running Blur and a Potion of Stone Form. In the next shot, there is a remove magic coming towards her and she's facing away from the demon, holding Dragonslayer.

I remember that battle, but even if I didn't I'd know exactly what was going on. Alikae uses the Sensate Amulet and has a base save v spells of -1. Dragon Fear, which the liches get as an at will innate, is a -4. Since I don't entirely trust Pro Evil bonuses or the Sensate Amulet in particular -and since some of our data suggested that saves of -5 may be needed to safely make -4s- Alikae's script calls for her to always have either 1) Dragonslayer equipped, 2) save v spells of at least -5, or 3) Greenstone of Potion of Clarity base immunity to fear. The least expensive way for Alikae to reach -5 is with RoAC II. The second least expensive way it to use Blur + a Potion of Stone Form. Alikae pre-buffs with RoAC II so that had been consumed. She wanted to fight the demon in melee using her fists so she buffed her saves with Blur + Potion of Stone Form. Once remove launched, she equipped Dragonslayer, insuring that the lich would never have a window to use Dragon Fear. She's facing away from the demon, and the lich, because her protocol calls for her to create distance to lengthen the size of counter window if an when she has been dispelled.

Given that I have a set strategy for each situation -and that I take screen shots of key moments- I can reconstruct battles in detail long after the fact.

I'm sure it's the same with chess, right? If you see a shot of a board, you know what your options are going forward and you can probably roughly figure out how you got into that situation. If you had enough pictures of a match, you could provide a pretty comprehensive reconstruction of the tactical details.

What would be missing, however, would be the drama, the emotions, the feelings associated with the actions.

Best,

A.

Alesia: I'm impressed that you know yourself so well, that you know exactly what you do/did in certain situations. I vary my approaches, so if I don't post soon after a battle, I would get the order of events wrong.

As for chess - I could assess a position and tell you the strengths/weaknesses of both sides, as well as options going forward (although most of the time, there's really only one good plan). Even if I had a lot of pictures of a match, it is unlikely I could reconstruct the game (move order is very important in chess), need a scoresheet. In most cases, I could tell you what opening the game came from, as well as what variation.

Phantasmic 6 {12} - monks party (update 2)

After returning to the Promenade to buy a few items - including the Ring of Energy and RoAC - the monks moved on stealthily to the Bridge District to pick up the berserker horn.  While there they solved the skinner murders and triggered lots of traps, but didn't take on the Rune Assassins yet.

They did a bit more sneaking around until they stumbled across Suna Seni.  A potion of fire breath did most of the damage there.  Then on to the Temple District to buy a few potions from Roger and undertake the Fallen Paladins quest.  They were separated and were soon taken down by stunning blows.
Spoiler

Still a bit below L9 (which makes things easier by granting magical fists) the monks went to the Docks and picked up Mae'Var's quest.  On their way to get the necklace they found Renfeld - this ambush is less dangerous than other early SCS ones so they attempted to just beat the enemies up.  That got off to a good start by successfully stunning the mage before he could cast, but the cleric then held 2 of them before an unholy blight did 18 damage when Wraith only had 17 available (she could have used lay on hands before that, but I wasn't expecting her to get targeted by anything - she had just stopped to fire missiles slightly too close to the others).
Spoiler

The loot from that ambush topped up gold just enough to allow them to buy a Rod of Resurrection, rather than paying the inflated prices in temples, and the party was soon back at the Docks to hand the necklace back to Mae'Var. They did the mephits in Rayic's house, but with only 2 weapons that could hurt stone golems they left those for now - instead choosing to return Renfeld.  That was enough for everyone to get to level 9.  The final set of die rolls was again disappointing to leave them rather below the average of 62.  Wraith with 48 HPs is still the one particularly vulnerable at the moment.

They stealthed in to Prebek & Sanasha and dealt with them before they knew what was happening.
Spoiler
After looting the Harpers they took revenge on Lucette for Xzar's assassination before sorting out Officer Dirth and the local pirates.

Moving on to the Graveyard they've just looted the Upper Tombs.  No real problems there - the Shadow Fiends did manage to hold 2 characters (one of whom didn't have Arbane equipped ), but didn't last long enough to do much damage.
Spoiler

I didn't want to risk the orog ambush outside the city - where the monks wouldn't be stealthed.   That meant they continued their work in Athkatla by sorting out the kidnappers and collecting their only slightly used pantaloons - their reputation was restored by talking to the circus tent guard and Lt Aegisfield.  Next they did the Sir Sarles quest - Neb being stunned before he could disappear.

Now with 4 weapons that could hurt golems (including one non-proficient dagger) the monks returned to Rayic's house to pull them downstairs one at a time. The mage himself was not given a fair fight: Chimera opened with a vampiric touch while 3 monks tried stunning blows and 2 others threw poison daggers - Rayic didn't manage to react at all.
Spoiler
The remaining Mae'Var tasks were quickly done, but the guild was left for now until backstabs are less of an issue.

Stats (cont. from BG1)
Chimera - L9, 56 HPs, 128 kills
Spectre - L9, 63 HPs, 244 kills, 0 deaths
Phantom - L9, 71 HPs, 130 kills, 1 death
Wraith - L9, 48 HPs, 121 kills, 3 deaths

I can't wait until your monks to get to level 14 Grond0 - magic resistance, poison resistance (yeah I know at 11, but still they will have at 14 too), and maybe Quivering Palm too? And whatever monk gets the Sahuagin City gloves gets a huge melee power boost. Just remember to side with the right side this time! (you had a monk run where you sided with the wrong side and your monk didn't get the gloves) You only get it if you side with the King of Prince, but can't remember off-hand who.

Yes. I'm still not sold on the monk as an endgame SCS/Ascension power build in solo play, but a team of 6 could become interesting.

Getting a group of 6 into the late game is a challenge, but I think Grond0 has the right strategy: stealth, spatial management, and Stunning Blow. That should work eventually.

Keeping 6 alive for the entirety of the adventure will be non-trivial- especially with the healing potion restriction.

Are you using the Oversight HLAs, Grond0?

Corthief VIII the level 13 solo halfling thief - Update 5 (Trademeet)

So Corthief VIII decides to try to tackle the trademeet quest. With a fighter, it's pretty easy, but with a thief, it was pretty hard. First, had to deal with Khan - definitely want to kill him, since I want the potion merchant in the Grove accessible. I used haste potion, DUHM, protection from petrification, and snares. 3 snares killed the genie with the lamp. Corthief VIII tried to get an opening backstab on Khan but made a mistake and accidentally did talk - while Cortheif VIII didn't actually talk, Khan kept facing him, so Corthief VIII couldn't get a backstab after all. Corthief VIII was forced to retreat and ran toward the south where a few snares were laid - they killed Khan's cohort, but not Khan himself - impossible to hide with Khan's haste - so Corthief VIII ran around the town, hoping to find some friendly guards. Corthief VIII was only 1/2 successful - for one, Corthief VIII lead Khan to some snares intended for Reijek, but decided Khan needed them since melee wasn't working well. Then the Lloraxxol guards assisted - but went hostile on Khan's death!

Corthief%20VIII%20kills%20Khan%20Zahraa%

Hmm. Okay, stealth away and get reward from guildmistress - success but messy. Time to try to get to the grove. The plan was actually no fighting - but instead try to stealth to Cernd. Should have known that wasn't going to work - stealth failed near the spiders and Corthief VIII had to run past spiders and trolls, and nearly got pinned in but he escaped. Unfortunately he had used his invis potions vs. Khan - that's really what he needs.

So Corthief VIII makes a stop at Waukeen's Promenade and buys Ribald's single invis potion and when back in the grove uses it to get to Cernd - Cernd then was happy to put the beat down on Faldhorn. The Mayor was pleased at Corthief VIII's success.

After my many hundreds of runs, for the first time I found the necklace of missiles merchant and bought it also for the first time in BG 2. I never knew that you needed to solve BOTH trademeet problems before he would sell to you. Learn something new every day I guess...

Corthief%20VIII%20buys%20necklace%20of%2

Corthief VIII wants to solve the Umar Hills issues, but he needs a good plan for that too. I suspect he'll skip a bunch of it - it will be difficult to re-hide with so many enemies fairly close together.

By genie with the lamp, do you mean Taquee, the one with the Efreeti Bottle?

Have you summoned the efreeti yet? Check his spells. Unless he is different in vanilla, he'll have three castings of Invisibility. You can make him cast Invisibility on you.

Phantasmic 6 {12} - monks party (update 2)

After a surprisingly long time without an ambush a full SCS complement appeared - but Chimera and co were under stealth and just ran away.  All the hiding and sneaking around at night they've done has meant that quite a lot of time has passed and all the vampire ambushes have triggered - meaning they felt happy to pay Gaelan Bayle.

After talking to Aran Linvail they went to find Lassal.  Their damage output with +2 weapons wasn't high and Spectre had to resort to a potion of firebreath to see him on his way.
Spoiler
The Guild Contact had no defense against fists though and was stunned immediately.
Spoiler
The monks reported back to Aran Linvail, but it's likely to be some time before they're willing to take on lots of vampires.

Next up was a return to the Copper Coronet for a dip down into their sewers.  They had no problems working through there - the myconids that could potentially have been troublesome were all stunned.
Spoiler
Recovering Lilarcor got everyone to level 10.  Captain Haegan tried to run away, but there was to be no escape.
Spoiler

Two Swords of Flame was just enough to kill the trolls.  The mages then heard some guards being killed, but couldn't deal with the volume of incoming missiles.
Spoiler
After looting the place and surviving the poison trap on the stairs the monks reported back to Hendak.

With work in the city starting to run short the monks returned to the Promenade (running away from another ambush on the way) to find Mencar.  Amon was killed by stealth and a nicely-timed horror affected Smaeluv before he could enrage.
Spoiler
At that point they tried to run away, but a pathfinding glitch led to Wraith heading in the wrong direction and she was backstabbed by Brennan, then stunned by a chromatic orb and quickly finished off.

After using the Rod of Resurrection the party stealthed back upstairs.  I had expected Brennan to have hidden himself, but he was still visible - unfortunately for him.  Mencar was also swiftly stunned, while Smaeluv was still scared and was encircled and beaten down.

In the Bridge District they darted in and out of a warehouse a couple of times while poisoning Dracandros with throwing daggers.  The others then didn't last long.
Spoiler

With a bit of cash to spare the monks bought a Wand of the Heavens from Mistress Ada before looking in to the Temple sewers.  They didn't fancy the beholders near the sea troll though and just left again.

They finally ventured out of the city, arriving safely at Watcher's Keep.  The potion case bought there provided extra inventory space before they ventured inside.  The stone golem was no problem, but a bunch of trolls took a while - 2 Swords of Flame being not really enough to kill any of the non-standard trolls.  However, they persevered and eventually managed to kill all but a spirit troll.  Multiple attempts failed at that until I eventually got tired of it and used a potion of firebreath.

They collected the Crimson Dart before trying the main room.  Once more there was a vampiric wraith waiting there though and they just ran away.

To Alesia and blackraven.

Yes it was Gaius, not Gaal...

As to me coming back, I wont. Playing Pillars of Eternity right now and cant be bothered with another repeat of BG saga, epic a trilogy as it is though, especially as I finished it with Eren once.

As to me not posting about my bg1 adventures: it was a speed run, finished it in 2.35 hours, nothing noteworthy happened. That was the state of my NRC play, so its a good time to stop now. Just cant be bothered with more of the same. Not to discourage anyone here of course.

BR: please play more if I have one more wish it be you and/or Aasim and maybe Realmuzzy as of late, finishing this challenge. Nothing on the others but they all finished this challenge at least once I believe.

Cheers!

Congrats on finishing the quest, Corey!

Thanks Alesia! I would have liked to power my way through the enemies, like I would have with a solo fighter type character, but that just didn't seem possible with a thief. In theory, I could lead enemies to traps, go invisible, and perhaps backstab a survivor, but I need on-demand invisibility that lasts longer than 10 rounds (my only on demand invis, at the moment, the RoAC). But experience is somewhat meaningless for a solo character, as I can guarantee I will be at level cap by the time I reach Melissan since am solo. So will probably get the invis ring from the lich at the Inn at the Gate district next session.

Phantasmic 6 {12} - monks party (update 3)

The next stop on the monks' journeys took them to Trademeet.  There they quickly surrounded and smacked down Taquee.  The berserk warrior was already in the tent, but didn't last long enough to absorb petrification spells - so Spectre used the RoAC to go in and beat up the Khan's buddy.  The Khan himself was then stunned by stealth attacks by the others entering (except Chimera - he was being uncharacteristically timid at that point ).
Spoiler

They bought Blackblood, Ras and the Cloak of Displacement, but didn't have the funds for the belt yet.  Moving on to the Druid Grove I knew the opening battle with the trolls would be difficult.  However, I was hopeful they would be able to complete it without running away when Wraith's low HPs failed to stand up to a critical and she died - again.
Spoiler
The others grabbed her gear and returned to Trademeet.  Back again, the remaining 2 spirit trolls were quickly killed as the monks moved on to the Troll Mound.  That was cleared in one go, though Wraith went down to 3 HP in the process.
Spoiler

Moving on I was just thinking that Chimera's horror had done well to scare Kyland Lind and 2 of his druids, when another one cast remove fear on them all.
Spoiler
That led to the druids running away, though Kyland and 2 others didn't make it to safety.
Spoiler
On the bridge they tried to kill the spore colonies in one go, but didn't quite make it.  With Spectre confused, Phantom tried using a potion of invulnerability to cover a retreat, but that only brought his save vs spell down to 2 and he got confused almost immediately anyway.  He then started backing away which left Spectre - equipped with a missile weapon - easy prey for the advancing myconids.
Spoiler
Phantom was less vulnerable, but also eventually killed before the others withdrew.

After the Rod of Resurrection did its stuff the monks continued on their way through the area.  Once more they recruited Cernd, but this time Spook had been weighted down with armour to prevent him making his farewell speech.  Cernd buffed with his own spells plus II from RoAC and then beat Faldorn to the punch with insect plague.  He put up 2 nymphs after that, but then a second insect plague, that would probably have given him the victory, was thwarted by magic resistance and a creeping doom ultimately spelled his, well, doom.

Trying again, once more Cernd got a successful insect plague, but a second one once more failed.  He did manage to infect her with 2 more lots of insects, but she responded by using extra-healing potions and her summoned animals then triumphed.  The third time she resisted the initial insect plague, which looked like being bad news.  However, I had responded to her cheesy use of non-existent potions by allowing Cernd to recover a werewolf token from outside the pit and he used that to attack.  With 3 APR and decent AC Cernd is a capable melee fighter and he was able to disrupt several spells.  Faldorn only realised the danger too late and her attempted quaff of a superior healing potion only kicked in just after death.
Spoiler

Spook was waiting patiently to get back in the party, though he's now a little behind the others in XP.  However, he benefited from the riches on offer back in Trademeet, allowing the party to buy the BoIB and the Necklace of Missiles.  The monks then quickly helped Tiris and cleared the tomb before heading off to the Umar Hills.
