When we were finally ready to make an on out assault on Abizigal’s Lair, having defeated Draconis earlier, we entered into a cave complex filled with four pools & a Greater Wyvern w/five Lesser Earth Elementals. We dealt w/them easily enough but Auren tripped a trap & fell so Keldorn used his Paladin’s Gloves to raise her back to us. With a few other injuries we tried to rest & recover our strength, which we did but were once interrupted by a Greater Earth Elemental that we were forced to dispatch before we could finally fully rest.  It didn’t make much sense to travel back & forth to Amkethran as I figured we were going to be here a while so we set our minds to staying down here until the mission was complete.

So, this was a weird lair.  Everything was connected by underwater tunnels that we had to traverse using a water breathing potion of which we had only a scarce amount.  We’d enter in one pool & head as quickly as possible for the light that indicated the exit from a different pool, generally in another room – but not always.  The underwater breathing potion was not one that would last indefinitely, so we’d all take a sip & then jump in quickly. None of us could swim w/our armor so we just moved along the bottom as quickly as our weight would allow.  It’s a good thing that this lair is in the desert b/c had the bottom been filled w/silt & mud I don’t think there’s any way we could move fast enough between pools.   The bottom of the underwater pools was solid rock w/just a few ledges that had to be negotiated but we were able to work around them w/o much trouble.  The first room we found had five Frost Salamander’s in it & we rolled them pretty easily before deciding to rest again & again we were disturbed, this time by tree more Frost Salamander’s that we defeated.  And again we tried to rest and again we had to defeat three Frost Salamander’s before we could finally get an eight hour respite.

The next pool opened into a Kuo-Toa Lair. These was a Kuo-Toa Bee-hive too b/c they had Greater Water Elemental allies including an Olhydra in their complex. We won out & beat them all & by the time we’d cleared the complex we’d defeated a Kuo-Toa CPT, five Kuo-Toa Archers, five Kuo-Toa Warriors, two Kuo-Toa Priests, two Kuo-Toa Whips & the Olhydra w/six Greater Water Elementals.  I took us to the main chamber so we could rest.  Yeah, right.  Four failed attempts & eight dead Clay Golem’s later we finally left Abizigal’s Lair & got eight hours to heal & just breathe outside.  Being Mirtul, The Melting month, it’s not as hot here as it will be in the next 45 days or so & the air is definitely fresher that it is in Abizigal’s Lair.

Next we found a large open cavern that was full of things one of us said were Seekers (like Flaming Skulls w/o the flame) were able to summon wolves, even an Ogre.  They would shoot Aganazzer’s Scorcher & pop off Magic Missiles which wouldn’t be so bacl except that they hovered together in groups of 10 or so.  What we did accomplish there was to meet a wizard who was able to tell us how to get around Abizigal’s Dragon Guard. He told us he had the scroll that would remove the Geas Spell cast on her that kept her there guarding the entrance to his chamber. The mage wanted an eye stalk for a Beholder, maybe he specified an Elder Orb, but whatever the case, conveniently, we were able to hire three adventurers who were Petrified standing right near where we met the mage.  For only 100gp we had our light work handled.  Anomen always carries about five Stone to Flesh spells & he only needed one for all three adventurers.  They took care of business, found the eye stalk which we gave to the mage & he gave us the scroll.  We were exploring pools in that room & we found the one w/not one, not two, but three Elder Orb’s waiting as soon as we emerged. No way was I getting us into that fight w/o the ability to set our feet so I passed on ending their existence lest we lost a valuable companion.

Key Event: Eventually we found the Green Dragon that guarded Abizigal. Again, I chose to bypass her by reading the scroll & releasing her.  She almost ran her mouth too much w/her boasting after Anomen freed her but my mission was Abazigal, & as w/the Elber Orb’s it wasn’t worth the possibility of losing an ally just to defeat another mouthy dragon.  Next up we passed into what was obviously Abazigal’s Lair. Colder than anybody’s business, I expected to find a Blue Dragon (or maybe a white) but what we intitally found were Ice Salamander’s which we defeated but they have quite a sting – they don’t go down easily.  Then Abizigal showed himself.  What a prig.  There’s not many bad guys I’ve met since I left Candlekeep that made me feel hatred so quickly as this guy did.  We attacked him & beat the smack out of him (even though he had a bad arsed sword) but then, he pulled a Draconis & was suddenly a huge Blue Dragon. I don’t know who landed the final blow but the kill goes to Imoen who laid all her traps when we first got there b/c nothifng approached us @ the door. We immediately strategized to find Abazigal wherever he was & bring him to us where we could concentrate our attacks.  Sure enough, after fighting & defeating four Frost Salamander’s (& a Fire Salamander) we battled Abazigal in human form. As soon as we had beaten him, he exploded into his Blue Dragon form & when he did he tripped seven of Imoen’s traps & was crippled @ that moment. The next hit or two took him down & he was gone. Sadly, after defeating Abazigal I was sucked back into the pocket plane to meet w/Solar. She guides me, questions me but it always ends in a trial.  I was drawn into a room where I faced a version of myself as well as some other apparitions from my past. I defeated them but lost my friend Sarah who had been such a help to us all & had been an enthusiastic companion since she joined just a few weeks ago.  I didn't have time even to mourn her yet  & I called on Valygar to rejoin me which he readily did.   I had another test right after that one in which I had to face my innocence which then became The Ravager when I chose to leave things as they are rather than return to the innocence of Candlekeep.  I don’t see how I could hide behind the walls of Candlekeep knowing the evil that would be outside those walls.  W/Valygar now my sixth, we crushed the Ravager easily (Keldorn Pdn/Inq//25, Valygar Rgr/Sam//21).

Hear text as mp3,

Imoen unlocked my cage for me… so I suppose that means I owe her? Anyway Minsc and Jaheira helped me fight and a weird guy named Yoshimo agreed to switch his class to fighter in exchange for letting him tag along… seriously, the worst Bounty Hunter ever!

I found my brothers ring amongst the dead bodies (keep-sake) and we had a dizzy start when the graphics spun a'bit… some world-wide spell after effect? ... I hit a new level just as we reached daylight to see Irenicus get dragged off by the local bobs and boo-ho I know but they also took Imoen so that's a bugger.

You know, I don't know.  She was just runnin' around Panicked & my PC was the only other one of the six of us that was conscious.  The enemy mage (forgot his name) was the only foe left & he was running out of steam so Gawain was trying to keep the pressure on him so as to keep him from turning on Sarah.  Suddenly, blammo, her picture disappeared off the right side of the screen.  I suppose it was a MM or ChOrb or something.  Hate that.  She was actually a decent PC, as I had her set w/three Animal Summoning III (Cave & Mountains Bears, etc), three Animal Summoning II (Panthers, Lions), etc so she helped keep the opposition busy. She was also VERY effective w/Crossbow Firetooth +4 so I hate to lose her.  But...that could have ended my no-reload as you can see from the predicament I was in.  Go figure, whip Abazigal & then almost die fighting myself & some other apparitions from my past, e.g. Tamako was there.

Quad > Trio no reload (attempt 4 session 15)
The last session ended in Brynnlaw after tidying up Trademeet - not documented for some reason. The three vampires had to be maced before the final save could be made.

Corheal suggested a variation on the usual Brynnlaw exploration, starting with Lady Galvena's Festhall. No real danger there, but Strofe and Brazil endured a couple of minutes cutscene while Corheal was free to roam around.
Spoiler
Brazil soon wished she'd been stuck a little longer.
Spoiler
After killing off Chremy and sending Ginia on her way, it was time to head to Spellhold. Corheal wanted to buff before grabbing the wardstone but Strofe decided that would not be necessary and Perth proved anything but adept with the Flail of Ages in his face and Arrows of Biting filling in the gaps. The Coordinator duly captured Strofe and co, and a dream-Bhaal badly wounded the lightly armoured Stalker before admitting defeat. Irenicus released the party into the clutches of Bodhi, allowing them into a maze for a game of cat and mouse.

Strofe hung back a bit more than usual and turned up too late to backstab a Greater Wolfwere but in time to finish off a badly wounded Pit Fiend (which he and Brazil had initially attacked with +2 weapons and had to fish around for +3's).
Spoiler
Corheal recklessly charged through one holding cell and into a second. Strofe hung back, anticipating a huge struggle to stay alive.
Spoiler
Sure enough, Brazil lost her Ironskins in double-quick time while Corheal took a liking to Extra Healing potions. Brazil was fleeing for her life in seconds and Strofe ordered Ras to intervene. This gave Brazil a break and Strofe helped with arrows. Corheal's potions out-lasted his Umber Hulks and the party reconvened.

A pulpit brought forth one enemy after another, all falling into a neat pile. Corheal had a cunning plan to deal with the Lich and undead companions, duly spoiled by arriving with his AI activated meaning he commenced hostilities and dropped his Turn Undead. Despite this, there was little danger and the Undead were cut down,

Corheal reached level 17 by talking to a giant head, celebrating by using Sanctuary to locate a group of Yuan-Ti and casting Firestorm -> Shut Door on them. They out-smarted him though, moving around the wall and mostly surviving the inferno.

Brazil will shortly be receiving a copyright infringement notice (from me), using the Multiplayer quirk to sight an Ulitharid through a blocked wall. Strofe is demonstrating the lack of Ulitharid below, but party clients have a clear line of sight which we never exploit. Ever. Ever.
Spoiler
Strofe uses the second set of Boots of Speed to keep his distance from Irenicus, Corheal having the only Death Ward active. Possibly because the shadowy ranger is proving elusive to buff.
Spoiler
With Irenicus gone, only clone-Corheal remains. The Efreeti Flame Arrows him, briefly tricking Strofe into thinking the real Corheal is being attacked.
Spoiler
Seeing Saemon Havarian results in a sinking feeling and a chance to loot the City of Caverns. The party make relatively hard going of it though. Here's Strofe showing his unparalleled armour class and saving throws. Yep, he's been paralyzed by a bolt
Spoiler
Corheal tries a Dispel Magic but Brazil is quicker. A few rounds later Strofe is facing his next dilemma, grabbing the Ring of Gaxx from Brazil and Cloak of Mirroring from her inventory.
Spoiler
A double-regicide is called for and quickly granted, and as the party descend into the Underdark Strofe reaches level 16, his second level of the session. Corheal has also added two levels, while Brazil took a fighter level and makes another tiny step towards her Grand Druid level.

Gate70: Strofe, Stalker 16. 711 kills (+80). Kangaxx.
Corey Russell: Corheal, Priest of Lathander 18. 313 kills (+66). Unseeing Eye.
Grond0: Brazil, Fighter 12 / Druid 13. 490 kills (+40). Shade Lich.
Retired;
DogDancing: Wewa, Thief 13. 84 kills (+5). Thaxll'ssillyia.

I thought Corheal had walked the kills that session while Strofe plinked away with arrows but Stalker dual-wielding steps the kills up rapidly and a priestly 1APR cannot keep up. Will be interesting to see if Strofe can do much more melee as the enemies toughen up.

@Gate70 - Corheal only got a good amount of kills because of so many undead who were turned and destroyed. Also there were quite a few enemies, you or Brazil would have got the kill shot if not for my fully charged wand of heavens (which initially had 100 charges). Clerics are just support characters, you and Brazil will be getting most of the kills. Also, with me usually in front, I often can't get my spells off (being interrupted). And as you mentioned, 1 APR just doesn't lead to high kill rates, not even with the 25 strength I can get with Righteous Magic and DUHM.

Still, the current method is working - with me in front with the highest AC, mobs can try to waste their time with me, while you and Brazil finish them off - with me as the target, Brazil can get insect plague off too, which in many situations is extremely helpful. Finally, with halfling saves, I'm the one most likely to make his save and thus, should be targeted the most by enemy spell casters (think save vs. spells is 2 now).

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 93 - (update 1)

Chris, half-elf fighter/mage/cleric (Grond0) & Gromm, half-orc cleric (Gate70)

This pairing got the chance to make a brief start in Athkatla yesterday.  I think progress was pretty serene during their exit from the dungeon.  The normal skeletons helped tackle anything that might have been difficult, with a bit of extra spell support used in battles with Ilyich and the elemental plane mephits.

Spoiler

They also just had time to restore the circus before going in to report to Gaelan Bayle.

I'm glad Sir Gawain made it, CKT. Finish strong!

Go figure, whip Abazigal & then almost die fighting myself & some other apparitions from my past.

PPC 1 & 2 can be non-trivial with SCS installed. I've had some close calls in both. Blackraven lost a memorable run in PPC 2. Those battles are not to be taken lighty.

Anyhoo. Best of luck with the endgame!

A.

Btw. You mentioned that Sarah was panicked when she died. Could the lava have killed her?

Omt2- 2,

League sort-of heroes:

Hear text as mp3,

I agreed to the shadow thieves blackmail… kicked Jaheira and Minsc and payed off the local wizards with a 5000 bribe then collected Jan and rescued Viconia.

Returning to the slums we rested, grabbed some quests/ said a quick hi to Neera as well as recruiting Hexxat and Dorn… 7 reputation (-1 Dorn and -2 Vic) doesn't leave much room for deeds so I decided on the non-violent way to resolve Dorn's first quest;
Tell the doorman I'm with the bride then tell the brother I know his sister intimately nudge, nudge… then announced I was carrying the grooms child!

Dorn dispatched his target during the excitement but I stopped him from wholesale slaughtering the other guests so we didn't even have to draw our weapons.

Hexxat found her special place and we dispatched the shadows to find a vampire named Burich whom Dorn sorted quickly (immune to drain is Dron) but Dragomir needs +2 weapons so that could have been a problem except my CC stunned the bugger for an easy win… Hexxat (the real one) asked me to hold her coffin for her and the party now has storage to burn but it may be prudent to get out of the city?

Corthief VIII the solo halfling thief - Update 7 (Mekrath's Lair, Tarnor's Gang, Rakshaksha with the cloak, Planar Prison, Dracandros Gang)

We last heard of Corthief VIII's adventures here.. Yes, it's been two months since his last update - reason? He needs to do one of two things - either get the Sword of Avoreen/ioun/Ilbratha in the Umar Hills quests, or Planar Prison. When I kept thinking of the logistics of doing either quest as a pure thief (e.g can't wear full plate (yet)), I dreaded them. I dreaded them so much, in fact, I didn't even want to take him out adventuring - he was in for a lot of work, and I needed to be mentally prepared for either, I didn't want to throw his life away.

I decided to attempt the Planar Prison - a ton of encounters can be easier with the haste boots. I had never soloed that area with a pure thief before, so I was going to have to come up with a completely new strategy. I did want to give him the best chance of succeeding, so I decided to make some purchases before starting this bit. At Ribald's bought his firebreath potions, haste potions, regen potion, protection from magic scroll, and potion of perception.

The first step was to get to Mekrath's, so Corthief VIII stealthed past Tarnor's Gang for now. Gaius tried to find Corthief, but thanks to Corthief's cloak of non-detection, that didn't work. Backstabs got rid of the mephits A-OK. For Mekrath, tried the fireballs-from-the-shadows trick, but that didn't work too well, as Mekrath's morale broke and he ran all over the area, including by the Yuan-ti the other side. Arrows were ineffective due to Corthief's VIII thaco as well as stoneskin. Eventually Corthief VIII had enough and had his Efreeti use the flame strike on Mekrath, and finally the pesky wizard goes down. Corthief VIII had to use a haste potion to get the gem and get out of there, not wanting to deal with the trash mobs left.

Corthief VIII had intended to stealth past Tarnor's gang but got seen! So he used a haste potion, hid and considered what to do. The gang was bunched up? But wait Corthief VIII wanted to free up inventory by talking to Roger - oh need to kill the Sea Troll (and a mustard jelly) first - ok do that. Ok now time for fireballs from the shadows - this killed 4 of the gang (took a number of shots).

Spoiler

Then running around and backstabbing Rengaard dead was the final act of the battle.

Spoiler

But wait, needed to get the cloak while I had the haste potion - oops was seen! Ran for it the Rakshashka followed - can I stay put and melee, with haste? No took too much damage - so instead ran around a few corners and after a few backstabs finally got the cloak. The kobolds then weren't too bad to pick off, one by one. Corthief's save vs.s spells of 1 plus his Aeger's Hide protected him well mostly, though he did take big damage from a lightning bolt. Charges on the necklace of missiles got low, so that was recharged before heading to the Five Flagons.

Some rest at the Five Flagons, then talk to the Sigil Troupe. Hmm, unbuffed, Corthief VIII had a heck of a time with the summoned monsters from the portal - and then due to a mis-click got too close to a shadow fiend. Melee definitely wasn't working, so Corthief VIII tries to run away - but dialog interruption gets him held by the shadow fiend and the shadow fiend gets a few attacks in - is this the end?

Corthief%20VIII%20gets%20held%20by%20sha

But no it isn't, as the bounty hunters kill the summoned monsters, including the shadow fiend! Close one...

Ok, how to deal with the large group of enemies? Would be hard to run and hide as there are enemies all around, need to be cleared first. So Corthief VIII used all his potions that made sense and in particular used the Ring of Air Control. Well it did, but I also failed to realize something extremely important, but more on that in a bit.

First Corthief VIII tries to use a firebreath potion on the nearby mage - this did not kill him (though I thought it did) - he went invisible and stayed invisible, because he couldn't target Corthief VIII. If I had realized this, I would have used detect illusions to flush him out while running around, but I didn't. He had a heck of a time, and only the Efreeti and the Berserker were enough to give victory (mostly). All the enemies were dead (that I could see), but still no dialogue - what's up? Right then the RoAC II wore off and the mage opened with power word: stun! (which easily works, with Corthief VIII's measly 70 HP). Is this the end? FoD was sent (which could have worked - I needed -1 to guarantee save but it's only 1). But Corthief VIII's hafling luck held. Then disintegrate - but I think 1 is guaranteed save. A few more meaningless spells, come on, come on - okay I can move! What should be my first action? I did invis potion, as I wanted the initiative (this was my only invis potion). I did potion of firebreath, some melee and finally the mage dies. Good riddance.

Okay, ton of enemies still left. Well, first thing first, equip the haste boots. This should make it much eaiser, right? Yes and no. Using running/hiding, finished the 3 nearby thralls to the right. However, the next encounter began the most difficult I have ever attempted, in all my runs. Took probably an hour of real time, maybe more.

Next group was 6 umber hulks and 3 thralls. Geesh, where's a cloudkill when a guy needs one? (No UAI yet, so can't use his cloudkill wand yet). I remembered Umber Hulks didn't have a ton of HP (which is why they are vulnerable to cloudkills in the first place). What I didn't know, though, is they move pretty fast and I needed a lot of room to run ahead and hide. Now with the haste boots I could hide, but I CONSTANTLY missed my backstab. Either these things have decent AC, or it's just my thief Thac0 at work. They would get hits after I missed so I gulped a ton of potions. I was using the Martial Staff, got so frustrated tried Namuraa, just in case they have blunt resistance or something. A few hulks I got isolated at the entrance and ran around the circle running, shooting and arrow, running, etc. But I had to pause constantly to make this work. And took forever too, which was much worse, as far as I was concerned. I probably missed 2/3 of my attacks, and I'm not sure even a single Umber Hulk was backstabbed from full health. As if I didn't have enough work with the 6 umber hulks, a thrall and the Wyvern got into the fun. I always had to be careful not to fall into the Githyanki cell, as falling unconscious solo would be quite fatal.

It was also a very good thing I was wearing Aeger's Hide (immunity to confusion), as the hulks got a large number of confusion attempts on me. After what felt like 100 years, and most of my extra healing potions, this group of enemies fell, although not before the Wyvern got Corthief VIII poisoned - is this the end?

Corthief%20poisoned%20but%20aura%20clear

Fortunately, Corthief VIII's aura was clear, and an elixar of health kept him in one piece. He tried to not to give the Wyvern free shots, but was difficult as the only safe places to run were at the bottom edge of the prison, so had to often "run by" the enemies, who occassionly got hits in. By now. Corthief's potion buffs had all wore off.

There was a single mage thrall left - I was totally unsure of her script. So tried Namuraa silence 3 times - the mage saved all times. Hmm, better do necklace of missiles - yes this works.

Okay, now for the Master of Thralls. Corthief VIII must be extremely careful, as the Master of Thralls cannot be fooled by stealth. Corthief VIII knew toe-to-toe was impossible, as he only had a small number of potions. He tried a few necklace of missile shots (staying unseen), but ineffective due to the Master of Thrall's magic resistance. I sat there a while, wondering how can I possibly kill it. Decided the 3 snares Corthief VIII has was his only chance, so he buffed what little he had left, laid the snares close together and summoned his berserker and efreeti. He sent them ahead (Corthief VIII elected to use his protection from magic scroll - he was pretty sure the T'anaari had save penalties to their attacks, which could be fatal if true). Then he tried a few hits on the Master of Thralls, and the Master pursued, with the air elementals dealing with Corthief VIII's summons. Yes, the snares slaughter the Master of Thralls! Big sigh of relief after that...

So then Corthief VIII loots the air elemental staff and orb, destroys the orb and was going to engage the Warden - but wait, why is this air elemental following me? I'm invisible! Scripted maybe? Better deal them - but wait can't get behind them, they are always facing Corthief VIII. Corthief VIII decides his staff of air is his best bet and yes it eventually kills both elementals.

Corthief was going to find the warden, but the Warden found Corthief VIII at the entrance. Corthief VIII decided to trade necklace of missile shots, while the Warden wasted his time casting spells on a character protected by protection from magic. Predictably, the Warden lost that duel.

Corthief%20VIII%20kills%20Warden%20with%

Corthief VIII was relieved at getting the haste boots and escaping with his life, but concerned at the large number of resources needed to complete this quest. But he must press on.

Corthief's PfM scroll was still active and he didn't want that to go to waste. So he decides to deal with Dracandros Gang - the battle started well, with Dracandros being one-shotted by a backstab.

Spoiler

Corthief VIII then ran outside, basically using run/hide/backstab, which was much easier to pull off with the haste boots - lots of misses though, so took a while, long enough for the PfM scroll to wear off. Once the last gang member was dead, time to sell - Corthief VIII is now at 30,000 gold. Though that won't last long if he gets things like the Staff of Rhynn and the BotIB. Raas would be probably be a good idea too, once funds allow.

Here's Corthief VIII's equipment at the end of the session:

Well done corey, I love strategy runs.

p.s, Did you consider sword of Mask?

I didn't have funds for that, also I have no skill with short swords currently, so as a weapon would be useless - I already have a hard enough time hitting enemies with weapons I have skill with.

Being the ‘sixth man’ in my retinue is a cursed position to be sure, or so my history attests. Sarah fell just days ago & now, Valygar is lost to me.  The list goes on: Nalia, Tyris, Amber, Jan, Aerie…  As much enemy blood as I have on my hands, it’s the blood of those who walked w/me, served me, ate & laughed w/me & fought @ my side…it is those people that stay w/me.  Even worse, now I I’ve become so used to loss that I am numb to its affects & just move on b/c I have to.  I remember how painful it was to lose Nalia, then Tyris, & finally Amber, women I might have loved.  & this does not even consider the others, maybe not the ‘sixth man’ but still part of me:  Minsc, murdered by a Vampiress in Brynnlaw, Dynahier, Jaheira, Khalid, Kivan, Coran…always walking beside me when they died.  Solar & the visions I see when I am in her presence, resonate w/such awful truth.  It is not just evil that falls in my wake…it is those I would call friends, even those I would love.  It’s now well over two years since I walked out of Candlekeep w/Gorion, the first to die @ my side & I fear today that even more are to fall. I feel evil & death all around me, as if I am sentenced, doomed to this life forever. As much as I wish I could say I was fighting for goodness & justice, this evidence argues otherwise.

I assaulted Sendai w/prejudice. I am angry & I am not waiting for an enemy to get a leg up on me. Sendai is an enemy & I am taking it to her w/o waiting on any trickery.  And so, when I first encountered a Woodcutter outside a cabin in the area marked on my map as her enclave, I attacked when Keldorn used his Detect Evil & found the Woodcutter to be evil.  I was not waiting around for an ambush, & despite my efforts, I found us ambushed anyway.  In a pitched battle we ended up battling & defeating a Drow Warrior (7.5k), five Drow Warrior’s (6k) & two Drow Wizards (6k).

I returned to the Pocket Plane & selected the Tiefling Haer’dalis to travel w/me from the offering of the Fate Spirit.  Aside from him, the only one offered was the Drow Priestess I saved, once near the Bandit Camp & then, again, in the Government District.  She’s evil through & through & cannot travel w/me regardless so, I need the help though & Haer’dalis is it.  I returned us to the scene of the previous battle w/the Drow & we defeated another Drow warrior (7k) & two lesser Drow warriors (6k).  We found a tunnel that likely led to Sendai’s Lair but wanted to finish looking around outside for her guards first. Good thing as we ended up battling a Hive Mother (50k), two Elder Umber Hulks (18k, two more Drow Warriors (7k), a Drow Wizard (6k), two more Drow Warriors (6k), two Drow (5k).  Not much in the way of treasure though.  Next it was on to the tunnel into the lair.

The attack on her cave complex started w/a battle versus two Umber Hulks, a Myconid Kind, three Spore Colonies & 20 Myconids. We pulled back after that b/c those things (Myconids) can make you lose your marbles & we all had a little of that goin’ on so a rest & some fresh air was in order before we took the battle to five Mutated Spiders, eight Umber Hulks, three Sword Spiders & a Wraith Spider. Feeling much too confident, I had us press on & we were able to take down a dual-axe wielding Drow (Theltnn’ss), a Drow Priestess, 11 Drow (5k), Drow (4.5k) & two Skeletons who were summoned into the action.  Another return to Amkethran for rest & recuperation was followed by a huge battle in which we had to fight our way through two Umber Hulk Elders (18k), 44 Derro Berserkers, a Slave Master (12k), an Umber Hulk (4k), & 20 Orogs (1.2k) (Anomen Ftr/18//Cl/19), (Auren Ftr/28) (Gawain/Ftr/32) (Haer’dalis Bard/Blade/31).

Just like a Drow to have a massive spider nest, our next fight was against a Spider Queen (Lashar’ra - 18.7k), 20 Mutated Spiders, eight Sword Spiders & three Phase Spiders (Imoen Thf/34).  Once again, feeling far too confident, I had my party remain behind while I waded into an unknown area to fight on my own now.  Near the end of the battle I called for them but I crushed most of them alone for ¾ of the fight. We ended up defeating a Drow Priestess, Drow Wizard, Ten Drow (5k) & two Drow (4.5k).  I had us rest afterward & regain our strength for another push on Sendai thru five Umber Hulk Elders, five Drow & two Umber Hulks.

TAKING ON THE HORDE SOLO

I was up next against a Lich next (& didn’t try to fight him alone).  We hammered him (Odamaron) & a Cornogun he summoned up.  As w/many battles, I lost Imoen, Anomen & Haer’dalis to unconsciousness in this battle. After reviving them enough to get back to Amkethran, we rested & healed for another assault.  I guess Anomen won’t be summoning Ogremoth, Prince of the Earth because Sendai’s assistant Diaytha pitted us against him & two Greater Earth Elementals. Next up was Diaytha herself, a Demon Knight & a Nabassu, When we first broke thru the Nabassu was in a pitched battle w/a Hive Mother so we let them have @ each other.  The Nabassu won that clash, then came looking for us.  Not good for it.  We rested out near the Woodsman’s Cottage before returning to defeat Sendai’s Captain of the Guard (Egeissag), a Vampiric Ulitharid & three UlitharidBack to the Woodcutter’s Cabin & then I headed thru the door, finally, that led to Sendai.

FINISHING THE LICH

FINISHING A DUAL W/SENDAI'S CAPTAIN OF THE GUARD

Key Event: My battle w/Sendai literally took hours.  After everything we had to wade thru just to get to her, I’d have been surprised @ anything less. When she was dead & I was thrust into the Pocket Plane to learn more about what has been arrayed against me, the only other companion standing by my side was Auren. Everyone else had fallen unconscious from their wounds. Normally Auren falls early b/c she is so much quicker than the rest of us & fears nothing but this time I kept my group close @ hand.  Before I ever got to fight the real Sendai I had to defeat seven statues of her, all w/different powers, & probably 8-10 Drow (I didn’t wait to draft a battle report afterward). As always, we had our most difficulty & had to be extremely careful w/Magic Users, regardless or whether they are Cleric or Wizard, but especially the latter.  You know, normally I like to lay out a blow by blow account but it wasn’t like that.  It was really about Auren & I surviving Sendai’s attacks long enough to finally break through, first w/un-enchanted weapons, then w/our very enchanted weapons.  Still, she took powerful blow after blow from both Auren & I.  Auren & I relied heavily on our HLAs, especially Magic Resistance & Hardiness. But lest I lead my reader to think our other companions weren’t key to victory.  Keldorn fell in this battle rather quickly but still helped eliminate some pesky Driow & the first Sendai Statue. Both Anomen & Imoen pelted enemy’s w/spells breaking them down with: Earthquake, Energy Blades, Summon Deva, Elemental Summoning, Horrid Wilting, Finger of Death, Maze, Summon Hakesheer, Breach to name a few. In addition, Imoen protected me w/Protection from Magic & Anomen showered us all w/an early Chant. Haer-dalis doesn’t really fit in w/this group but he fights hard w/his set of skills.  After the battle, I neglected to retrieve his gear so all was lost by the time we returned as a group again.

ELMINSTER LENDS A HAND OF SORTS

My return to Amkethran was not surprising as I’d learned in the Pocket Plane that Balthazar is One of the Five.  I’ve seen Melisan too but she was captured by Balthazar so I’m not sure her role in all of this but it appears she’s not a Bhaal Spawn.  When I returned to Amkethran I was attacked by Balthazar’s Mercenaries & Monks. We ended up defeating Balthazars’ Guard Captain, the Mercenary Guard Captain, 14 Mercenaries  (11k), 28 Monks (10k), seven Mercenaries (8k), one Mercenary (kk) & two Mercenaries (1k).  The village is cleared of his Mercenaries & Monks.

Level Up:

·          Anomen: Helm continues to bless Anomen w/greater power as he has been raised to the position of Fighter/17//Highwatcher of Helm/19. He selected Summon Deva as his newest HLA.  I realized a short time later that he was deserving another promotion as a knight & Lord so now he’s (Ftr/18/Cl/19) & he selected the HLA Magic Resistance

·          Auren: I’ve had the privilege of traveling beside this brave woman for so many months now. It is an honor to promote her yet again to Apprentice/28-29 (Fighter/28-29). She continues to prefer the title apprentice although there is no one in the realms that could apprentice her when it comes to dual-wielding swordsmanship. She selected the HLA Critical Strike

·          Gawain: I feel I continue to improve & estimate that I’m a Fighter/Lord//34. I selected a 2nd Magic Resistance HLA

·          Haer’dalis: He’s a different kinda bird, really!  But he gets in there & brawls w/his swords. He’s improved to Bard/Blade//31-32 since he joined me & he added the HLAs Alchemy & to his abilities

·          Imoen: The Greatest Rogue in the realm.  I like that.  I remember when she used to call herself little names like, ‘Imoen the Quick’ & giggle.  She still giggles but she doesn’t have to make up names for herself anymore. She’s now a Thief/Charming Rogue//35 & selected her 2nd Spike Trap & 2nd Exploding Trap HLAs

·          Keldorn: At the front of every fight, the noblest & most courageous of Paladins, I’ve given yet another brevet promotion to Keldorn, raising him to Inquisitor/26 (Paladin/26). He selected the HLA Summon Deva

Corthief VIII the solo halfling thief - Update 8 (D'Arnise Keep, Watcher's Keep 1st level)

Corthief VIII checked his journal - quite a bit of stuff to do still. He was not sure how to deal with them, but with haste boots many more things are possible to do now. For one, he really needs the ammo belt. So he goes to Watcher's keep. He was very careful to backstab/run etc. He also used summons a few times like against the stone golem. He also used necklace of missiles vs. the enemies in the room with the jellies. He used pro undead scroll and sunray (from Daystar) for the undead group. Everything else was run/hide/backstab and repeat. Statues were NOT fought (nothing needed from them). Oh, yeah also used the Crimson Dart vs. the Guardian Golems - standing in the doorway with that strange statue in the large glass display case works really well for them. He also got a level here. Success! Ammo belt retrieved.

But on the way to D'Arnise Keep, Corthief VIII gets in ambush. The Efreeti tried stinking cloud but it wasn't working well.

Spoiler

So Corthief VIII tried the Staff of Air summon - much better!

Spoiler

At D'Arnise Keep, most enemies were run/hide/backstab - harder enemies, used snares. Fire arrows finished off the trolls. Quite a few enemies were left behind, just too many to deal with plus they hit hard if they can get a lick in. Corthief VIII got much better hits against the trolls than Umber Hulks - smacking this one for 104 damage for example.

Corthief%20VIII%20smacks%20troll%20for%2

Most of the golems were ignored (didn't need the loot they guarded). The iron golem was taken out, might as well, since the Crimson Dart easily kills it thanks to the doorway. Umber Hulks were diverted with dog food (of course). For Torgal, tried to pull just him, but got this whole group! Hmm, summons died fast. Corthief VIII runs for his life, but Torgal follows and is pretty fast. Torgal does NOT regenerate like the other trolls though (good thing). We eventually found a table and Corthief VIII would run around the table, shoot, run, run, shoot, run, run etc. until Torgal died. Despite Torgal being near death when this process started, still took a while but eventually Corthief VIII succeeded. Whew. Surprisingly, the piercing arrows killed Torgal, even the kill shot.

Spoiler

Corthief VIII still doesn't have an ioun stone, will need to pay a visit to Panaii soon - after getting a protection from poison scroll first of course. Will save for next session.

Gate70/Grond0 multiplayer attempt 93 - (2nd and final update)

Chris, half-elf fighter/mage/cleric (Grond0) & Gromm, half-orc cleric (Gate70)

After making pretty smooth progress, with no deaths through BG1 and the early stages of BG2, the run came to an unfortunate end yesterday.  The duo had gone to Watcher's Keep relatively early to get the potion case and had no problems in looting the top floor after finding the vampiric wraiths that ended our last run here had gone on holiday.

Before leaving though Chris decided to get the XP for returning the lich's slippers.  That nearly proved fatal immediately when the guardian golems attacked before the lich appeared and both hit her - she had to make use of a potion of speed to get away from them.  After resting up she came back again - this time using a haste spell.  After running the golems around a bit she successfully summoned the lich and gave up the slippers.  However, the delay while the lich appeared let one of the golems get back close and she took a hit before running round them and out of the room.

At this point she was free and clear.  However, I decided to take a screenshot to accompany the report of her narrow escape  and duly paused the game to do that.

Spoiler

That proved to be a fatal mistake as on restarting I clicked to move her several times, but there was no response - one of the guardians then loomed up behind her as the game froze.  I'm pretty sure I was clicking on a permitted movement spot, so it was definitely annoying to die like that.  I do an awful lot of running enemies around in my games and a failure to respond to a mouse click is fairly common - which is why I always use multiple clicks when being chased.  It's not at all common for a succession of mouse clicks to be ignored, although ignoring mouse clicks is much more likely to happen when trying to start moving than when continuing to run (hence my comment about stopping to take the screenshot being a mistake).

Omt2- 3,

Torgal bashing:

Hear text as mp3,

Some slavers tried to put me in chains after leaving the grave yard but I wasn't in the mood then a shadow thief wanted my help against a vamp at the city gate… I'll sort it later because I need to push my arm up a chook.

We stopped Mazzy from joining the harem and sent her home (unlocks Trademeet) then executed a murderer for the crowded wizards and swapped Jan out for Neera. With my group now complete we payed Watchers a visit to collect some easy items and a spot of shopping… most importantly recharging the cloud wand.

De'Arnise Keep proved very easy at our level until we reached Torgal and I then noticed he wasn't actually dying in the clouds… (o that's right I installed BP) …after the guards perished we retreated upstairs to reset my spells then charged him.

I'm now level 9 – 10 and Dorn has decided on halberds.

@Grond0, Gate70: Sorry to hear that guys. Personally, I always kill the Guardian Golems first, then talk to the lich once they are clear. Since they require +3 to hurt, I will usually use the Crimson Dart and plink them from the Crimson Dart room as well.

We probably would have killed them, but we had a grand total of zero weapons that could hurt them (as we were both clerics the Crimson Dart was not an option). :(

I see. In that case, your options were Martial Staff, Spiritual Hammer (spell), and also some +3 bullets in one of the containers on the 1st level.

We were too low level for spiritual hammer to work and were too mean to want to pay to buy any weapons :P.  I agree the +3 bullets could have been used, though I don't think there are enough of those to kill the golems.  The intention anyway was to just nip in and get rid of the slippers - we were both quite happy to leave the golems for a future day when we had appropriate weapons (by which time Chris would probably have got around to learning stoneskin).

Didn't you have two Wardstones (green and blue) found on that level? With them you don't have to fight those Golems at all - they are just not turn hostile. Never fought them myself and not intend to do that in the future.
