After resting at the Copper Coronet, Cantoras went into the back rooms and freed a slave called Hendak and sold off more accumulated junk to reach 14700 gold. Hendak asked if Cantoras could help free more slaves... which he did. He even used a little melee instead of the more traditional Death Spell.
Once that was all over and done with he headed back to the Copper Coronet and received his reward (immediately sold off) and was at 19 reputation. He went to Waukeen's Promenade, talked to the soldier outside the tent to get to 20 reputation. With a huge stack of gold coins and great reputation it was time to shop. Cantoras cast Friendship off a scroll and a few seconds later he was the pround owner of the Robe of Vecna. Without actually planning for it, he had more than 15K gold left, so he went directly to pay off Gaelan Bayle.
Eager for more easy EXP, Cantoras went to the Government District to talk to Tolgerias and Delon so he could go to the Umar Hills. On the way he talked to Flydian and promised to help Trademeet. He did all the errands in the Umar Hills, including getting the mimic's blood (using the Horn of Valhalla for distraction and MMM for offense). Jermien's golem was also destroyed with MMMs. Reached level 13.
Spell picks:
L1: Blindness, MM, Identify, PfE, PfP
L2: Invisibility, Resist Fear, Mirror Image, Blur, Knock
L3: Haste, Melf's Minute Meteors, Skull Trap, Remove Magic
L4: Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Imp. Invisibility, Farsight
L5: Spell Immunity, Sunfire, Spell Shield
L6: Death Spell, True Sight
Having completed all the minor quests in the Umar Hills, Cantoras went to Trademeet...

when last we left our group,
Viertes
Jaheira
and Viconia
had already stocked up on the good items:
for Jaheira
for Jaheira, too
and still for Jaheira
for Viccy
and for Viertes
so.. well armed they headed off for the cult of the Eyeless.
First they had to get by the guys in the sewers. This is usually a brutally hard fight for me.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr480.jpg
but the mountain bears are *tough*
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr482.jpg
Normally, i charge after the beholder. But this time, i decided to do the quest "properly" and get the rift rod first.
Did i mentioned that mountain bears are tough?
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr488.jpg
with 1/2 of the rift rod, the group *then* charged the beholder.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr492.jpg
(i...um... kinda got confused at what was supposed to happen next. Ended up only getting the first half of the rod... bummer).
the beholder just isn't that hard to kill
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr494.jpg
although Viccy did fall to a death ray or whatever.
After the mission was over, the party dropped the Paladin. Of course, he didn't really ever fit in anyway.
Then it was off to the Wndspar Hills.
I'll pick up there next time.

next it was off to the Dragon's place.

Mountain bears = tough, remember?
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr502.jpg
Stone golumns, no problems
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr504.jpg
vampire room.. check
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr507.jpg
Kaol and company are usually a real struggle, but Viertes' group plowed through them.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr511.jpg
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr513.jpg
wolfwares... check
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr514.jpg
more stone statues
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr516.jpg
they were flyin' through. stopping to rest between the fights, but ran low on spells. and headed back.
After smashing gollums, wolfwares, mummies, vampires ,and the like, they got encountered by some respawned whimps.
No probs, until Jaheira got held
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr517.jpg
all those nasties couldn't stop her and the stupid-@&*(! little hobgoblins took her out
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr518.jpg
i was pissed. Viertes and Viccy couldn't carry all her stuff, mixed with all the new stuff they got.
So they decided to take a small risk and rest on the spot where they fought the hobgoblins. they figured they could deal with any random wandering Orcs or hobgoblins. And if they were lucky, they could rest, and Vic could get her raise dead spell, so Jaheira could help carry things.
Good news is that they didnt' get encountered by any orcs or hobgoblins. Bad news.. they got encountered by something worse:
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr519.jpg
I just about gave up the no-reload at that point. I was about 2 seconds away from just shutting down and reloading. Vic had some skelletons left to summon, but they couldn't even
But i figured.. what's the worst that can happen.
they had to go toe-to-toe and take some damage to kill it.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr520.jpg
then it was back to rest and get Jaheira back. this time, they headed back to the cabin and hauled what they could. They actually got most of it. What they left was just some +1 arrows and such. WHen they got Jaheira back and returned, they got everything they had dropped.
Then it was back in... I'll pick up there later.
Here is Viertes:

Cantoras went to Trademeet and the Druid Grove to take care of all their problems.
Death Spell Makes Things Simpler, however venturing forth Cantoras stupidly forgot that SCSII spiders have Web as an innate. Fortunately he made the saving throw and was able to live another day. The Troll mound was simple. Without any summons of any significance and having discovered what was ahead (let's just call it Farsight), Cantoras decided that discretion was the better part of valour and went to Nalia's Keep to kill more trolls.
Once at the de'Arnise keep Cantoras slaughtered all the trolls on the first floor using Death Spell, made the stew and collected the Ring of Earth Control. Went outside again and lowered the drawbridge. Again Death Spell took care of all the "new" trolls and the Greater Yuan-ti. Went upstairs and rested before taking care of the Yuan-ti Mage in the library. The Golems were killed by buffing, running around like a maniac and casting Sunfire a few times. The Iron Golem was a little more persistent (100% fire resistance), but was dispatched by getting it stuck in the doorway and pelting it with MMMs. Went down to the basement to take care of a few trolls before taking on Glaicus. Decided to leave Torgal alone for now. Made it to L14 while placing the dog stew.

L4: Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Imp. Invisibility, Farsight
L5: Spell Immunity, Sunfire, Spell Shield
L6: Death Spell, True Sight
L7: Mordenkainen's Sword
Anyway, went back up again and let a Mordenkainen's Sword shred Glaicus. Assembled the FoA+3 with the final head for a little free EXP. Decided to go back to the Druid Grove to finish up there.
The Druid Grove was very easy with Mordenkainen's Swords. Even Rakshasa (this required a little tactical maneouvering to become the target of her Death Fog and to place the Mordenkainen's Sword properly).
Cantoras finished up the remaining quests in Trademeet (Tiris, the Feud) and bought the Cloak of Displacement and the Belt of Inertial Barrier from the merchant.
Decided at this point to go get the Boots of Speed...

The first step towards getting the Boots of Speed was Mekrath's place in the sewers. Didn't fancy a mage fight, so agreed to help him and cleared out his "lair" afterwards. There was a scary moment when Cantoras got careless and was hit by the AoE of a Chaos spell from a Yuan-ti mage. Luckily he was able to run just out of view of anything before it hit, so he just ended up standing there doing nothing. Phew.
Cantoras returned the gem and just stood around watching the Blades of Doom decimating everything that came through the portal. Reached level 15 at this point.
Spell picks:
L1: Blindness, MM, Identify, PfE, PfP
L2: Invisibility, Resist Fear, Mirror Image, Blur, Knock
L3: Haste, Melf's Minute Meteors, Skull Trap, Remove Magic
L4: Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Imp. Invisibility, Farsight
L5: Spell Immunity, Sunfire, Spell Shield, Res. Acid
L6: Death Spell, True Sight, PfMW
L7: Mordenkainen's Sword, Project Image
Before going into the "conduit" to the Planar Prison, Cantoras rested upstairs, buffed and put up SI:A/SI:D before entering (while under Improved Invisibility). That allowed him to get into position to summon a couple of Mordenkainen's Swords safely. Once they had been summoned he just sicced them onto the Bounty Hunters. The Master of Thralls fell easily to a few MS as did the Greater Wolfweres. Once it was time to fight the Warden, something weird happened. I can't remember exactly what happened, but somehow he ended up triggering his own trap (he's immune, surprise!). Anyway, he was walking around the map and ended up fighting some swords. In due course met his doom. The rest of the Planar Prison was mopped up with Swords and the occasional Sunfire barrage.
Since he was just shy of L16, Cantoras decided to kill Uncle Lester... which he did.
Spell picks:
L1: Blindness, MM, Identify, PfE, PfP
L2: Invisibility, Resist Fear, Mirror Image, Blur, Knock
L3: Haste, Melf's Minute Meteors, Skull Trap, Remove Magic
L4: Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Imp. Invisibility, Farsight
L5: Spell Immunity, Sunfire, Spell Shield, Res. Acid
L6: Death Spell, True Sight, PfMW
L7: Mordenkainen's Sword, Project Image
L8: ADHW
Things were beginning to pick up speed-wise at this point because of the Boots of Speed. Cantoras quickly did a few of the minor fedex quests around town:
- Helped a guy who'd been buried alive and killed his kidnappers and freed a hostage they'd taken.
- Helped the Temple of Helm to get some Illthium for Sir Sarles. Upgraded the Horn of Valhalla along the way -- it's probably going to end up not being used, but it's not like Cantoras is short of gold.
- Cantoras was FINALLY ambushed for the second time (Renfeld). The body was returned and Cantoras helped Xzar find "Montaron" by gaining entrance to the Harper's hold.
- Helped Renal Bloodscalp revel Mae'var as a traitor. Cantoras agreed to kill Mae'var, but wasn't quite feeling confident to go through with the assassination quite yet.
Reached L17 at this point. Spell picks:
L1: Blindness, MM, Identify, PfE, PfP
L2: Invisibility, Resist Fear, Mirror Image, Blur, Knock
L3: Haste, Melf's Minute Meteors, Skull Trap, Remove Magic
L4: Spirit Armor, Stoneskin, Imp. Invisibility, Farsight
L5: Spell Immunity, Sunfire, Spell Shield, Res. Acid
L6: Death Spell, True Sight, PfMW
L7: Mordenkainen's Sword, Project Image, Prot. from the Elements
L8: ADHW, Pierce Shield
Finally, Cantoras went back to the De'Arnise keep and let a Mordenkainen's Sword shred Torgal to bits.

I started clearing the left wing of the first level, including some slimes while defeating the first statues with the help of a Deva and an Elemental Prince. After the right wing was cleared as well without any major problems, Isis performed the ritual and the group destroyed the other statues, using the same summons and buffs. Right here, everything works fine, but a few seconds later, Padmavati died due to a Horrid Withering by the enemy mage (not permanently though). After the resurrection, Isis entered the second level and first cleared out the librarys, using some protection spells (I don't have acid, and only 50% cold, but the others are no problem.
First, Alvin and Padmavati buffed everybody with prot from lightning, and together with aerial servants, the group defeated the air guardian. Next, an Elemental Prince was summoned to help with the Giant Snake, which was rather easy. For the Iron Golem, the poison cloud somehow killed Padmavati again, but Woden was able to ressurect her via the staff. I let a Deva handle the mists and the ice golem. Isis lured the fire elementals in the ice room and killed the fire giant with Gromnir's Helmet and Hardiness.
It was time to fight the demon. I fought it in his ice form (fire is the damadge type I have most of), using some fire elementals and the Flail of Ages, also Tansherons Bow with Fire Arrows, a Flamestrike from the ring of fire protection (I forgot so learn flamestrikes with Padmavati) and the firetooth dagger with Alvin. The battle was rather easy, although it took some time.
I left watchers keep, not wanting to face the horrors of level 3 yet. Instead, Isis travelled to visit the marching mountains, were she had a strange fight with a Bhaalspawn Chinchilla and some fire giants. For groups of 2-3 fire giants, I usually either use summons as tanks and destroy them in melee combat or I use Gromnir's Helmet + Hardiness with Isis to tank them. However, both of these tactics don't really work for the big groups you face in the dungeon, so I decided to go with a strategy I explored while playing my solo Totemic Druid, being her only (or, at least, easiest) way to beat this battle: Summon something (anything) to lure the fire giants to a central point (you need to have all of them on screen) and then use Natures Beauty, which will always work and make them blind and totally helpless. You can finish them off either with ranged weapons or just one by one. here are some blind and helpless fire giants.
I used the same strategy for the other big fire giant group (I usually have at least 3 nature's beauty spells memorized).
Propably the last fight against an Adamantite Golem was now not as difficult as in Suldanessalar. Groups with salamanders and cats in it were dealt with by using some fighter HLAs - I just didn't feel like summoning for every battle when I was sure that it wasn't necessary.
On the second level, Isis ran into more fire giants and their soon dead leader (Natures Beauty!). Imix, the prince of fire was not that hard, considering I always buffed protection from fire as long as I was in the Fire Giant Cave, so his flamestrikes didn't hurt Alvin.
I obtained both of the hearts and went back to visit the witch. To fight her, I buffed and summoned the usual stuff (including skeleton warriors, this time), took out her nymphs and herself (lost Woden due to earthqake and shambling mounds, but not permanently) and finally the (blinded) shambling mounds (they take ages and are immune to Silver Swords instant death).
It was time to find and kill Yaga Shura, another opportunity to use one of my druid-tactics. Walking around invisible after the most basic buffs with every party member (using some rings, cloaks or potions, or the fifth level druid spell) prevents most of the enemies from spawning, one party member hurts yaga shura and goes invis again, and you find his spawnpoint, disrupt the mage's true sight, go invis again and hide up north.
There, I buffed and prepared with summons, took out the fighter, cleric and thief and then destroyed the Fire Giant with fighter HLAs.
I took his items with him (padmavati using his shield and Woden his armor now) and went to the Oasis, happy to finally obtain the Answerer +4, one of my favorite weapons in the game and really great for Woden right now (he started dualwielding in the fire giants lair). The battles were a piece of cake, with a Deva and an Elemental Prince charging the enemy. Now, we reached Amkethran were we will resume our quest next time.

- Fought the Mercenarys Saemon stole from
- Helped the Smugglers and bought Gargoyle Boughts + Endikus Full Plate (Padmavati)
- Helped the Mayors Daughter
- Helped the Priest of Waukeen (new Ring for Alvis!)
- Spoke to Marlowe
Fighting VonGoethe was not that difficult with my group - I destroyed all the lesser undead with Sunrays and then simply started to attack the Lich. He did almost no damadge to me at all since I was protected from his spells.
After that, it was time to visit Sendai. Isis survived the first Drow Ambush without any major problems, and the Drow Leader stood no chance against the force of Deva, Elemental Prince and the well-buffed party with Fighter HLAs.
After entering the dungeon, some minor battles were fought, usually with a Deva or Isis with Hardiness tanking. I used some of my new Spells to deal with the Umber Hulks.
The battle for the key was a little bit more difficult, but a Deva managed to distract most of the enemies, so with some potions, hardiness and gww/critical strike, the enemies were soon defeated.
I invised my group to go for the Slave Leader and then revisited the other tunnels for extra experience. After fighting some more drow and Umber Hulks (Natures Beauty Blind works exceptionally well against those), it was time for the (as usual) very anticlimactic battle against Odamaron - the Lich was killed by a single Deva-hit. His saves suck.
It was time to fight the prince of earth elementals. I used a Deva and Isis with Gromnir Helmet and Hardiness for tanking, so there were no problems involved. For the Drow Priestress, at first a Deva destroyed Demon, Vampire and Demon Knight. Then I charged, destroying the Hive Mother and The Priestress.
The Captain was another onehit, because of the Silver Sword proc (I still use it, as long as +3 weapons work it is simply awesome - even in ToB, especially with gww, the instant death effect kills most enemies before physical damadge would kill them). Mind Flayers were never a problem for Isis, and now I even have the extremely powerful Mind Flayer killing machine, a Deva buffed with CC (Devas are somehow immune to -int effects).
Sendai herself was a piece of cake. She just doesn't do a lot of damadge in any of her forms, and if she does, you usually have enough time to heal up. I focused on instantly killing the summonde drowguards, using a deva and sometimes fighter HLAs, while I constantly summoned creatures to distract the Sendais. When I had to heal up, I had lots of heal spells and potions ready. There didn't happen anything unexpected...Sendai simply was outnumbered, outbuffed and outsummoned - in her final form, I didn't realize my Remove Fear was over, and Padmavati got feared, but I had a Deva summoned, and they have the spell, too. Her own summons were quickly destroyed and she died within a few seconds, the only damadge she actually dealt was a successful Harm on Alvis, but with no followup what so ever, so he simply healed himself.
Next time, I will try to finish Watchers Keep. I expect to die there (level 3 or level 5) or when fighting Draconis - Sendai was the aim I set myself and I thought to be realistic, so from now on I am happy with every fight I win.

I would leave Watcher's Keep till the very end. It's difficult even for my own solo kensai/druid(at least demogorgon is). I think you can blind Draconis with nature's beauty, but I haven't verified this with my own druid so I don't know. But good luck, you've made it the farthest I've ever seen a random party.Enuhal wrote...

Finishing Firkraag's dungeon wasn't a big deal.
The mountain bears had already killed off the stone golems and cleared the way to the last couple fights. Tazok fell in the 3rd round or so, after a fairly lame Viertes backstab followed by 4 mountain bears and a fire elemental tearing him apart.
After talking to Firky, they faced his mage, who went invisible and protected. But Viccy cast true sight, viertes cast breach, and Jaheira cast insect summoning, and the bears and fire elemental (left over, still) charged. Mage dropped in 2 rounds.
Since they still had the tough summoned creatures out, they decided to try the luck at the air elemental and head to the room with the Anamantite Golem. The elemental dropped fast. the stone golems did too.
The Anamantite one was a bit more work.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr527.jpg
The summoned creatures "unsummoned" partway through, so the group ended up running. One of the problems was Jaheira. The best weapon she had was only +2. After resting, Viertes cast Enchanted Weapon, but all she could get was a mace, longsword, short sword or axe -- none of which Jaheira could use.
Still with enough summoned help, Viccy using the Flail of the Aged, and Viertes using an Enchanted sword, they finished the creature:
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr528.jpg
With Vic actually getting the kill. 25000 exp for one opponent -- nice.
they finished some wolfwares and headed out
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr529.jpg
As they left, they ended up running from some re-spawning mummies. With almost no spells left, they weren't crazy about getting into mele' with mummies. Moreover, there was really no reward, since they were done with the dungeon (except for the dragon himself) and the mummies would just respawn anyway.
The collected the exp for freeing the boy and headed back to town to rest and sell some items.
Next, they headed toward Umar Hils.

My solo fighter/druid managed to beat Firkraag by tanking him, and UNHASTED at that! I did use some summons, but that turned up just being a delay tactic to burn up his PfMW. Once my fighter/druid got into melee range, I got a few hits in, got hit hard and used Rod of Resussurection heal, got a few hits in, rod heal, etc. till Firkraag bit the dust. My druid's weapon was a simple Blackblood club +3. Managed to do it the first try as well.

The group entered the third level of Watchers Keep and, after meeting Yakman, started teleporting around. First interesting encounter was the first Demon Group. I distracted them with a deva and started melee attacks, and even though the battle was close (because the room before this one is a no-magic zone, and there is no way to prebuff, and most of my spells got disrupted, so I didn't have cc's up), Isis managed to finish them off.
For the Alu-Fiends, there is also a no-magic zone before their room, but I managed to buff everyone with CC before they were able to charm the group. The rest was easy.
The next Demon Group was difficult as well - I could prebuff here, but the sheer amount of strong melee enemies made it difficult. Luckily, Alvis managed to summon Sunnis, allowing the group to take off the enemies one by one.
Some summoners did a lot of damadge to Isis, but not enough. Surprisingly successful was my charge on the Tieflings in the other room: Silver Sword proved it's worth by instantly killing their mage, and the others were no problem. I didn't even take a point of damadge.
Demon Knights are no big deal that far into the game. The final battle for level 3 proved to be, as usual, tough and interesting. I decided that staying here is no use since I couldn't disarm the traps in the room anyway, so I simply charged and tried to defeat the Demon Wraith as soon as possible. However, Padmavati got turned to stone (but no aoe-followup, luckily) and Alvis got trapped with his minions: Looks pretty bad, doesn't it?. Luckily, all I had to do was keeping Alvis alive long enough with Potions and RoR-Charges until my Melee Fighters killed the Demon Wraith - with massive HLA-uses, it was pretty fast, even though Alvis got killed, but could be ressurected. Again, luckily Woden was (this time) wearing the Ring of Earth Control, allowing me to banish the Petrification.
I played with the Cambion and won the Spectral Brand in the second round.
As I expected, WK4 was really easy. First, I cleared the main Area (Trolls and Yan-Ti and some shadows, uhhhh, scary), then I went to the very easy Githyanki. I used the second Prot from Magic-scroll to kill the Demi-Lich, forged Angurvidal and attacked Saladrex. Of course, I made the party immune to fire and used Fire Elementals + Deva as summons. Fully buffed, I entered the battle, and soon it was over without any major incidents - high melee damadge was enough to kill him really fast.
The Illithids were easy as usual, so I won't go into detaill describing the battles. Rock and Garrock at least almost managed to kill my Deva, but were really easy in general. I picked up all the Buffs from Lums Machine and travelled to meet Draconis.
As I (and propably all of you who ever tried fighting Draconis with a group having no arcane spellcaster or thief on insanity) expected, he pretty much destroyed me without allowing me to put up a major fight.
His first form was easy as usual, since he used his timestop to attack Isis with his fists... yeah, right.
He transformed and I ran away, to give my party the time to rebuff and resummon. He was faster and started with his typical game: "Let's kick the party around, not allowing them to cast a single spell, and if they do, running out of range and turning invisible is fun!"
Honestly, of course I used all the protection from acid scrolls I gathered throughout the entire game, but look at this: here - he permanently killed Woden with 216 damadge in a second even though he saved against his breath weapon, and should be protected from acid (though I suspect Draconis dispelled the protection a few seconds earlier).
The only spell I managed to cast during the entire fight was one single Natures Beauty, but he walked out of range. All the other spells were disrupted (and I tried every round), mostly by him kicking the party around. I think I managed to get him to "injured" with Melee Attacks, and I couldn't even apply many of those, because, not even considering getting kicked around constantly, I had to spam my 3 Rods of Ressurection the entire time.
So, a few breath weapons later, he instantly killed Padmavati and Isis - remember, we are talking about a Barbarian with more than 180 HP and at least (if he dispelled the scrolls again, which I don't know anymore) 25% acid resistance.
I know that doing WK5 wouldn't have helped me anyway- there are only 1-2 new items, and more experience wouldn't really change anything either. However, I am pretty sure that I'd have been able to finish the level (without Demogorgon, that is).
So, my personal conclusion to the run:
I had lots of fun trying to survive the more difficult encounters with my randomized group and learned quite a few new tactics during the experiment - New ways to deal with Elder Orbs, new ways to deal with Fire Giants (or, at least, confirming semi-new ways), a new love for the Silver Sword - and I think the run was pretty successful.
I admit, the random rolls were not bad (having a thief and 3 divine spellcasters helps), but the lack of arcane magic proved to be fatal in the end. I always made the experience, every time I played ToB, that I didn't really need Arcane Spellcasting - until one specific point, that being Draconis (every time I killed him without arcane power, I had to do multiple tries). I guess, with a mage character in my group, I might have been able to get to Melissan (don't know if I could beat her). Of course, still having Xoch would propably have been enough, so curse this unexpected and really foolish death I brought to her in the Saradush sewers... no traps, no scrolls, no dead Draconis.
Still, I am happy with the run and it is actually the first time I played a Barbarian that long (Barbarian is the only class I never finished the game with iirc) - I liked it a lot. Of course, the main reason the run was almost successful was being able to easily survive the early SoA because of the Totemic Druid and his summons, but still, at least upon entering the Underdark, the game became exciting and a great experience.
I don't know what I'll play next yet, maybe a Paladin-like Character (not a no-reload) or a solo no-reload with... some character, maybe starting from BG1, or another randomized group, or a group where only the main character is randomized and the others are NPCs... We shall see. Good luck any other no-reloaders.

Now I'm inspired to try this challenge with a randomized party (since my last F/M/C died). I'll play without difficulty enhancing mods this time as my party is probably not munchkinized enough... I just cloned my installation using the multi-install tool from g3.
The party I rolled up consists of:
-Europa, (the PC) TN human avenger druid. Stats 13, 15, 8, 17, 15, 15 proficient in spear, staff and sling
-Nikolai, LG dwarf fighter. 11, 17, 16, 11, 16, 5 flail, staff and short bow (though he doesn't have sufficient strength to use a flail)
-Karenina LN halfling priest of Helm. 11, 16, 11, 9, 15, 15 mace, club & sling
-Shvanana LN dwarf priest. 15, 13, 17, 12, 14, 8 warhammer, club, & sling
-Jariel CG halfling swashbuckler. 15, 15, 16, 10, 11, 11 scimitar and dagger
-Radeel CG half elf conjurer. 14, 15, 17, 11, 16, 12 dagger and dart
I count myself very lucky to have the conjurer, though any mage would have been fine. I've never played an avenger before, but the shapeshifts, particularly the spider are proving strong and the extra mage spells are very useful. Neither have I used a priest of Helm before, but she is proving to be a good tank inspite of low constitution; holy power + righteous magic + seeking sword = 4 attacks per round when hasted scoring max damage per hit.
After escaping dungeon and completing the circus, we rest in Seven Vales. Next day we take on the goons upstairs. Webbing + sending in conjured spiders and free action fighters works well. Shvanana is the only one who can wear the full plate at the moment.
Next we complete CC/slaver ship + lilarcor quests, which are also easy exp. Head to the temple district, get Eyeless cult quest and tackle the bandit party in the sewers. I was reminded here of how overpowered insect plague is in unmodded BG, none of the bandits got a spell off, and with a fire elemental backing up Nikolai and Karenina, the melee fighters also fell quickly. Selling the bandit's gear, along with the reward from the slaver quests, gets us enough money to buy mauler's arm mace and girdle of hill giant strength, which is almost essential for Nikolai, who now wields wyvern's tail morningstar.
Europa and Jariel are now level 11, everyone else is level 9. Probably I will try eyeless cult next, the dex gauntlets would be very useful for my party.

Draconis has always been a tough fight. You were playing on insane too? But a great job in Watcher's Keep, that place is very scary! Third level watcher's keep has always scared me silly, but some of the fights are optional so may want to keep that in mind when you're trying to get at the white dragon scales, or fighting in those annoying wild magic rooms.

Yes, I was playing on insanity (otherwise, I propably would have had a chance against Draconis (and he possibly wouldn't have done, you know, 216 damadge within a second), or at least I would have been able to retreat, do WK5 and try it again).
WK3 does indeed scare me a little bit, usually because of no magic zones (which didn't really matter with this party, because Woden and Isis do the main work anyway) and the 2 talking Demons (they were tough, and the battles were close - not including Draconis, the battles were the ones I had to use the most potions (luckily, there are a LOT of potions in ToB)) and of course the Demon Wraith with his trapped room where I couldn't disable anything (next time, I'd get protection from petrification scrolls. I forgot about this specific trap) - I didn't do good in this battle, but my spell protections help a lot (mages were never a big deal for the party - in fact, the toughest fights by far were Nizidramanii'yt and Draconis, even though all other Dragons were kinda easy.
For skipping optional fights, I started this specific no-reload run with the premise not to skip any of them. I did this in previous no-reloads (in fact, I think I skipped quite a few battles with Kalis, at least Demogorgo and several in BG1, but these were special...circumstances), but I didn't want it to do here, mainly because it was only my second insanity playthrough and I wanted all the experience (both for the characters and for myself) I could get.
I guess I will re-install BGT and randomize a PC (by the way, I have tried random partys in BG1 before, but my success in no-reloading them was extremely limited, mainly because of very sad con-scores (I never got to Chapter 4 iirc) - and I already did 3 successful BG1 no-reloads before. Good luck, you will propably need it!)

Not a bad party at all. Some gauntlets of strength for the Dwarf, maybe some dex gauntlets, as you say, a couple good spells, and you're group is a real threat.
Keep us posted.

Yup, rolled a sorcerer and a thief, and then four barbarians one after another. And two female dwarves. Count that. Two! Amazing. Not as diverse as your party but should prove interesting. As for myself:
Will be playing insane as usual. Should be fun. I have most of ascension and improved guarded compound(from tactics) installed.
Switching gears, soloing BG and randomizing here as my luck hasn't been great in BG.

First, the group polished off a few left over things in town, then picked up the planar sphere quest, which opened Umar Hills. Next they headed there, picking up a few of the missions along the way. Then it was off to the fallen temple and the Shade Lord.
the temple itself was no real issue. They made heavy use of mountain bears and fire elementals (great for the lava room, by the way) and some of Viccy's anti-undead spells (repulse undead, false dawn, etc).
Then cam the real fight. Since Corey gave me grief last time, i decided to go for the gusto and charge the dragon.
First, the team summoned in some low-level creatures to help. They knew that the creatures wouldn't do much good. But figured they'd absorb the first couple rounds of dragon-spells, making him/her (is the Shadow Dragon a male or female? No one ever mentioned that....) blow it's first few spells.
The team fired off a second wave of summons to get the real help in. meanwhile, Viertes casteded "lower resistance".
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr556.jpg
Mazzy played the roll of pin cushion.. Whenever the dragon wasn't attacking one of the summon creatures, Mazzy took the brunt and gulped down potions like Gatoraide.
Since the summoned creatures got feared, Mazzy took a lot of hits
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr557.jpg
Meanwhile, the dragon had drained Jahiera's levels, making her basically useless.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr555.jpg
Viccy considered throwing a restoration her way, but Jaheira didn't really have a weapon capable of hitting the dragon, and had lost her spells due to the drain. So she pretty much played the roll of "coward" and stayed out of the way.
Viertes was the real cannon. One she'd throw two lower resistances, she fired off all her magic missiles (5? I think?, plus two on seqencer.). Then she switched to acid arrows and vampiric touches.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr559.jpg
The fear-ed creatures were a problem. They kept running out of view range into the fog, making it really tough to "un-fear" them. Moreover, having them there prevented summoning in too many others. When a creature would drop (say, a fire elemental that didn't get feared, for example), the group could replace it, but couldn't summon in anything else.
Eventually, the fear expired, though, leaving the creatures off the map somewhere in the fog. Viertes bumped into them while running like a scared chicken from the dragon, and sent them forward. Then Jaheira's level drain wore off, bringing her back to full hits, but not spells. What the heck.... charge. She could do any damage, but she could at least be another target.
Appropriately, it was Viertes who brought down the creature:
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr562.jpg
Officially becoming "Viertes, Dragon-Slayer":
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr568.jpg
(*whooo-hoooo*)
But the party was short-lived, since they still had to kick out the Shade Lord.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr566.jpg
which, as it happened, just wasn't that big of a deal
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr567.jpg
back in town, the group dropped Mazzy and picked up Valygar, (since they were passing by his cabin), drank themselves to a stupor, and payed off Galen
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr570.jpg
Plan was to do the Planar Sphere next, so that they could drop Valygar. But I've been itching to do the Guarded Compound with this group. They're lower level than I like, but this is one of the tougher groups i've taken through.
More on that, next time.

same mods(Ascension without yaga shura/improved guarded compound)

Need to stop attacking blue circles with arrows I suppose.
Tale of Elizabeth Wildstone (only post)
Elizabeth Wildstone's party suffers a nonpermanent casaulty with Alissa Blackstone, the assassin of the party. With the redundancy of another thief in the party, her revival isn't a top priority.
There comes a realization when the party comes to terms with hasted summons. Elizabeth Wildstone directs Jennifer Blueheart to monster summoning I. This coupled with haste should prove useful.
Never realized how well a wizard's spell arsenal could complement a fighter, well at least a randomly generated fighter that has low strength. Yes, the spell which increases strength is actually useful in this manner.
Getting the mauler should prove useful to one of the fighters, probably Nayleen.
Assault of the Slaver Compound
The assault was initiated by five of the group, the assassin still not revived, but to start this fight, Jennifer Blueheart used polymorph self and changed into a spider. This was a very powerful means of attacking the enemy, and she managed to down several. Voldo Sanctuary(the mage) cast emotion-hopelessness upon the enemy mages. This worked on them but Jennifer could not in her spider form, reap the benefits because she felt their was something odd about the stairs(there was a trap). Eventually the mages recovered, and lead a full on assault themselves against Jennifer and Voldo, consequently the two mages of Elizabeth's party. Gilbert Keenwind(the thief) laid down two traps trying to halt the incoming traffic, but the stoneskin mages took them full on(didn't do anything to them). Voldo is slain nonpermanently, as well as Nayleen Yannick(the fighter) again, nonpermanently. Eventually after a bit of running and drinking potions while escaping, the remaining three return to finish up the last slaver wizard.
After rest and relaxation, the remaining three begin another raid at the slaver compound. This time, Jennifer Blueheart gets dominated by the enemy cleric. Funny thing however, she ends up using the axe instead of the arbane sword(because she had been polymorphed into a spider from, and she ends up not really doing any damage at all(a whopping two damage! Perhaps the insane difficulty doesn't factor in dominated party members). In any case, a bit of mace here, and an arrow there, this second group of slavers is defeated. Elizabeth decides its time for another rest.
The Captain of the slavers managed to kill Gilbert Keenwind(nonpermanently) before he died. The two trolls holding the little girl hostage were taken out by a mirror imaged, stoneskin, polymorphed into a spider Jennifer Blueheart. The poison damage actually hurts trolls.
Investigating the Harper Compound
The party eventually revived all the dead party members, and were sent on a mission to destroy apprentices, by a certain harper. Three party members were selected to enter this particular building, Alissa Blackwall, Voldo Sanctuary, and Nayleen Yannick. Voldo opened up with a monster summoning III getting a single ogre beserker(I think that's what it was), Alissa poisoned her arrows, and Nayleen just started swinging at the female mage. Prebek was poisoned before his contingency opened up, that stopped his spellcasting for awhile. The female mage I believe, began with a confusion spell, immediately confusing everyone. A lightning bolt spell was cast as well, and I realized the immediate danger everyone was in. Thankfully it only killed Prebek, and caused Alissa to nonpermanently die. The ogre beserker escaped out in the open, and had to be put down(confused monsters will hit peasants and lead to a reduced reputation) by Elizabeth. All in all, a good attack, a bit risky but it worked out for the best.
Stealing isn't worth it?
Gilbert drinks four potions of thievery and steals the ring of regeneration from Ribald. This will allow the party to heal without paying a cleric everytime a battle ends. But a minor setback occurs when the party gets very greedy and tries to steal some scrolls from Bernard in the Copper Coronet. He isn't very pleased and goes hostile, and the party loses two reputation points. Instead of killing Bernard outright, the party charms Benard and leads him to one of the rooms in the Copper Coronet, shutting the door and letting him take a breather. It is a distasteful task but as they say, crime doesn't pay if you get caught.
Dao Djinn Hate
A crafty and devious djinn in trademeet has handed a ring of folly to the party. Elizabeth doesn't like this insult and prepares an assault upon the djinns. The efreeti bottle is acquired.
Tragedy in the Druid Grove
The party's strongest character, Jennifer Blueheart is chunked by a call lightning. I had forgotten one of those druids was in the troll attack party. When Jennifer got held(she was in spider form so arbane's sword didn't help) I thought she was fine as long as the wizard was kept down. Wrong choice apparently, I should of had Voldo slay the druid.
The mushrooms of death
Call it bad luck or just plain ignorance, Elizabeth loses hope when Jennifer dies and starts a crazed attack upon the mushrooms that confused. Mistiming her barbarian rage, she melees her way into death at the hands of the mushrooms. I'm getting sloppy I guess.

Viertes update:
I'd been itching to do the guarded compound. At 11th level, I wasn't sure Viertes was ready for it. But, Viertes' team was tough, and the compound was the home of Celestial Fury. It was the whole reason Viertes picked up a proficiency in Katana.
The group walked in and had the obligatory conversation with the mage, get threatened and then find themselves alone. Moving forward, they stepped far enough to actually trip the alerts, summoning in the demon and the other defenders.
Viertes' group had a protection from good up, since Viertes had a couple of demon-summoning scrolls on her as well. The summoned demon ignored Viertes' party and went after the rest of the guards.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr571.jpg
But when Viertes' group backed off and headed outside, the demon followed.
This put them at a bit of a disadvantage, since Viertes couldn't really cast spells outside without getting in trouble with the Wizards.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr572.jpg
Viccy and Jaheira summoned some help. which had no real issues bringing down the demon:
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr574.jpg
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr576.jpg
The group rested and headed back in, invisible.
Directly after entering, there's a small room to the right.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr577.jpg
Invisible, the group set up in there, and worked their way by the secret room next to it, to the farthest room on the right.
Viertes snuck close enough to throw death fog, which ended up taking out one of the spell casters, although it also exposed Viertes, who ran like a scared little girl.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr580.jpg
Stalman ended up coming around the other way, and encountered Viccy, who was busy casting, while Viertes ran like a little girl again.
But Viccy -- my girl -- has *magic resistance*
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr581.jpg
Shortly after, every one charged. And Viccy got hit by Celestial Fury (no resistance against a blade, you know)
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr582.jpg
Vic got stunned and dropped, while Valygar charged.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr583.jpg
the combination of the team and their summoned creatures cleaned up on the rest of them.
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr585.jpg
And.. dun dun DUN
i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn49/rooTheDay_album/Baldr586.jpg
So,
Jaheira was able to bring back Vic with no problems and the group went shopping, Viertes now armed with a pretty spiffy weapon. With all that they collected, they ended up with about 45,000 gold.
So... the team is now:
Viertes
Jaheira
Viccy
Valygar
Next... the Planar Sphere.
