If you are will to use a door, then there is no need to rest- just wait and go when she unsummons.

You could go Rat + Defender but straight out of the Chataeu getting the Cloak might be non trivial...

Anhyoo. I just wouldn't go.:P

Edit: Read your post on the Spell Shield scrolls. That's a nice HLA for Bards!

Ouch. That could have helped a lot. I know it would. I like getting the SSoM +4 early on for backstabbing and the quivers downstairs for infinite arrows early on. Well, it didn't make sense that WK is accessible in Ch. 2 after all but, meh, whatever works. Hahaha. ^_^

For Alana, the trip would be for Darts- Crimson and others.

The SSoM +4 would be nice for her but the Sword of Avoreen is free and quite good. They have similar tactical uses. SSoM is 0 and Entangles whereas Aroveen is 1 and Slows. Comprable. Arvoreen also grants Stun and Slow immunity.

It would be nice to have both of course...

I would like to have more Darts. But on balance, I like the WK Between SoA and ToB component. Story wise, that's the only time I could bring myself to do it.

It is. The guys at SHS are PnP purists and they believe that any arcane spellcaster must be able to write down their spells onto scrolls. Even aTweaks allow Sorcerers to do this and this made me a bit excited because it means more of those lvl8 and lvl9 scrolls that are pretty hard to come by (this brings to mind using Wish again and again).

Sword of Arvoreen is much better overall, but I learned that SSoM +4 was a potential Mantle killer, before I installed the mod where Mantle protects against +4 and below. Haha. At that point, SSoM +4 was more of a high-damage weapon than anything else. It's +5 variant, though, is very powerful (though kind of useless in the long run, better to use the Heart for something else).

There's a certain guilt to be had when you hear Ogden speak, "Ah, the Bhaalspawn..." and you know you don't deserve the reverence just yet. Yeah, you rescued Sword Coast and all only to be ostracized so it must take something like saving *the* Elven City to rectify any doubt (only to be hated again in ToB, what's up with that?).

I'm playing right now and Aesgareth just drew the Construct card. It wiped out everyone save for him. Too bad I wasn't able to record it. It was really funny. I think I can take the Deck *and* get the Emperor Card from him. This is going to be tough, though.

Will update in a while.

EDIT: Got the Emperor card and attacked Aesgareth. It is possible if you refuse to turn over the gem. If everyone got killed by the Construct, though, two high-level tiefling mages spawn to help Aesgareth. This might be scripted or they might have been invisible the whole time, I don't know. Anyway, easy battle, not worth recording. He just Mantles time and again. Nothing buffs won't keep away (that is, buff before the last draw).

Yeah. If I had to choose I'd take Arvoreen in a heart beat. Arvoreen main, Sheild of Harmony off is a really nice setup.

Alana's personal item, Where the Hearth Is, compliments it nicely.

Anyhoo. Good luck getting The Deck.

Arvoreen + SoH is actually so immunity-loaded that, added to their natural high saves, a halfling becomes a powerhouse. Mazzy, back in the day, was one of my favorite fighters. Add Keldorn to the mix and the game becomes immensely fun to play (not only because it's easy, though, haha).

Got Ruin, Star, and Comet. Oh well. I only got 50k gold anyway, so I think +1 to Dex and additional +5% to Fire Resistance are worth it. Heh. I still wonder whoever was that man with fiery red hair. Is it Melchor Harpell? Can anyone tell me? Haha.

Are you using some spell counters for the possible game-ending effects of the deck or do you just have a death wish?

Err... Just a Potion of Magic Shielding. Why, was I supposed to die there? I thought it was a good draw. I don't remember how it works but I think you can save against most of them, yes? I think there was an Imprisonment and a Charm there. Well, it worked. Heh. If it ended with an Imprisonment, well, tough luck for little Monty but it's been a lucky draw.

@ SoS- Luck by a lady(*)

I'm glad for Monty. I wouldn't touch the Deck myself though...

@ToV- So you know, there is time to use a Pro Magic Scroll after a Maze cast. Gauis just tried to Maze Alana. He did a really good job of executing it too. He cast Haste, did a pair of huge circles around the Sewers and then on the third time stopped on a dime and cast. If he was scripted to do that deliberately, it was a clever bit of work.

Best,

A.

* Apologies for the horrid reference but I was in a production of Guys and Dolls in middle school and parts of it stuck with me...

Monty just finished the Mind Flayer lair in WK. Will upload the video tonight when connection is better. I will just compress it for now.

Just in case it helps: SCSII makes the flayer's devour brain ability very consistent. I won't say really cheesy, just consistent. It's hell fighting them in closed spaces, but it just so happens that it's Mirror Image that's stopping them from connecting. Of the many buffs I used, Mirror Image foiled them time and again. As for attacks, they die in about 5-6 attacks with Chaos Blade equipped, even the Vampiric ones.

I don't know the particular cards you drew (and can't be bothered to look them up :)), but I'm pretty sure that some of the deadly effects are unavoidable by any means. (Other knowledgable people around here have stated so, I'm taking their word for it -- haven't actually tested.)

I actually detailed them above: Ruin, Star, and Comet. I lost all gold, gained a point in dexterity, and 5% fire resistance. Heh. It's just luck, really, though I had no intention of actually using it before. I just thought that if I got Ruin, I might as well head on to other results. :)

Okay, so I take a break today. An hour or so of BG2 is more than enough when it's as stressful as hell to fight countless Devil Shades spawning in every nook and crany of WK. Will update and upload more videos tonight.

Good afternoon, guys (at least from where I am). Good luck to everyone else!

Alana in Bodhi's Lair

Just a few highlights from Alana's tour of the tombs...

Azuredge allowed Alana to drop the Vamps with limited risk- despite lacking Level Drain protection.
Image IPB

Against, the Clay Golem, Alana Dual Wielded for the first time in her career. She wanted Slow immunity but couldn't do damage with Arvoreen. Flail of Ages in the main hand.
Image IPB

Azuredge proved a worthy ally again in the ambush. The Sword of Arvoreen ended the Warders.
Image IPB

Lacking Level Drain protection -and reluctant to hit and run in the room of Blood and Blades- a Protection from Undead scroll seemed a wise if unsatisfying move against Lassal.
Image IPB

Bodhi found standing around and getting hit by an Axe educational. Whatever makes you happy Bodhi: just leave...

How many attacks are you getting in with Azuredge at this point? I would assume you only have one * for now, yes?

EDIT: The video upload happened to get through and can be found here, but I will save the commentary and the complementary description for later. I'm a bit sleepy. Really warm afternoon where I am.

One is all she needs. Whether she is ranged or in melee, she almost invariably moves as soon as she gets her attack roll- assuming that her enemies are non-trivial.

Extra attacks would help her when tossing Darts to Stun, Poison, or remove Stoneskins but that's about it really.

She'll get a lot more Hardinesses than Whirlwinds when the time comes.

Best,

A.

Alana in the Sewers

Here's Alana's latest battle: against Tarnor et al. in the sewers. There were some scary moment here -and the price tag ended up being high- but alls well that ends well.

Alana took limited buffs pre-battle under the assumption that Gaius would dispell them. She just took a cheap Strength Potion and some renewables.
Image IPB

Her plan at this point was to get some space, go invisible, and then gradually layer in buffs. Unfortunately, when she was trying to get some room a group of Kolbolds spawned in. You couldn't spawn in before the battle, it had to be now. Thanks guys, no really: thanks.
Image IPB

Then a Carrion Crawler and another batch of Kolbods decided to join the party. Is there an open bar here or something? What gives?
Image IPB

After a little invisible buff/strategy session, Alana decided to use a Potion of Firebreath to clear some of the fodder and put a dent in Tarnor's bunch. It worked reasonably well. But invisible would-be backstabbing Kolbolds hampered her movement. Gaius's Flame Arrow met the Reflection Shield.
Image IPB

Shortly thereafter, Alana got boxed in by summons with Draug Fea, Tarnor, Zorl, and Rengard all in melee range. This was scary untill Alana stopped for a moment and looked at the weapons. Slashing, Blunt, Blunt, Blunt, Blunt...

Potion of Absorption. Tarnor suddenly moved to the top of the hitlist and Alana felt comfy where she was.
Image IPB

Step right up fellas. Whose next?
Image IPB

Gallchobhair had a Slashing weapon. But in a truly inspired move, decided to drop back and use his Bow. Good luck with that. Don't you see my Shield or my Cloak, Boots, Girdle and Claw?
Image IPB
Image IPB

After cleaing the fodder -a phase where an aberrant number of enemy Criticals landed- Alan took down Draug Fea. There was never any danger here: Alana was just being stingy with the Potions of Extra Healing.
Image IPB

The scariest moment occured here when Gaius decided to turn the Sewers into a raceway and then suddenly put on the brakes and tried a Maze. Scroll time!
Image IPB

Interestingly, Zorl had wandered off during the fight. Alana found him over by the Rhakshasa. Trying to lure in more allies perhaps? Alana wasn't biting though: she pelted him with her Sling from a far. Zorl got the hint and charged to no avail.
Image IPB

Gaius had disappeared when the Pro Magic Scroll went up. She used her Efreeti to lure him out. Then she fed him a Dispelling Arrow followed by some Darts of Wounding. The Sling finished him.
Image IPB

Fin.

Best,

A.

That's alright, Corey. Let's just take solace in the fact that Alesia is... well... Alesia. Hahaha. But, really, isn't that some bloody good fun right there, guv?

@Alesia

That is one heck of a battle though, Alesia. However, it is a bit easier considering that for all of Gaius' magic, he's prone to Arrows of Dispelling and he likes to use arrow-type spells, which makes it so ironic for him (especially when you can RS him to death with his own spells).

Running around with an MGoI+some good armor/resistances actually makes this fight pretty trivial. If a fighter can emulate that very same protection--which you did albeit with potions and a bit of running around--it's easy to separate and destroy them.

I see now why you consume a lot of OoS, given that you only have 1APR for axes. By any chance, do the vampires in your install move at a slightly faster rate? In my install, they move at, I guess, +3? It's hard to outrun them, even when hasted... What gives?

Monty the Blade Update:

Finished this battle much earlier but was too lazy to provide a complementary wall of text then. Anyway, not much of a biggie battle here. I took what I learned from the sewers and brought it to their lair. The premise here is simple. Keep buffs up, especially Mirror Image, Stoneskin, and the Fireshields. The first two, especially MI, is meant to protect against the melee attacks. MI protects better in this case because Devour Brain seems to still work even when a skin blocks the attack (unconfirmed). However, MI actually wastes their attack, considering it a miss of sorts, and therefore Devour Brain doesn't happen.

As for attack pattern, I went for the bad targets first. Umber hulks were killing themselves with the Fireshields anyway. We keep the incoming attacks at a bare minimum by standing at doorways as much as possible. This is to preserve our very few MI and Stoneskins spells.

The link to the video and the timeline follows:

Monty vs Illithid Lair, Watcher's Keep

0:18 - Monty finishes buffing and move forward. A welcoming committee of umber hulks and vanilla flayers meet him. Monty brings out Chaos Blade and attack the flayer in the middle.

1:13 - Two flayers down, with one panicking and one more incapable of inflicting harm. Hulks still as stupid as ever.

1:39 - An umber hulk kills himself on the Fireshield. Monty opens the southern door and is greeted by a boatload of hulks, ulitharids, and flayers. With his aura clean, he opens with Sound Burst.

2:13 - The first few times Monty gets hit by Devour Brain. Monty refreshes MI and keep them at the door. He goes for the ulitharids at melee range. A Sound Burst later wipes out four enemies, though I'm not sure which.

2:46 - We gulp down a Mind Focusing potion to keep our intelligence stat up. The ulitharids are falling like flies to dexterity drain (I'm pretty sure 5 attacks at 8 damage each is not enough to kill them, no).

3:06 - The second wave is gone. Monty moves on to the southern room and is met by even more flayers and hulks. He moves back to the doorway and waits for them to get near, then unleashes a Sound Burst.

3:35 - Sound Burst reveals nine flayers and two hulks. Monty goes for the ulitharids at melee range first.

4:35 - One whole turn later and all the enemies in the southern room are either chunked or slashed to ribbons. Monty buffs up again, makes a mistake in opening a locked door, and ran ahead to the northern room. There were only three hulks there and they all fall.

6:06 - After rebuffing and fusing the illithid rod, Monty opens the last door and claims the ink. Two vampire illithids appear but they fell to Chaos Blade+Whirlwind in less than six rounds.

I will continue playing now. Hopefully, I can destroy Saladrex without much problems though I highly doubt that given the his lair is somewhat bigger than Firkraag's, which means more problems when he goes for Wing Buffet. Also, the demilich here is touted as more lethal than Kangaxx and heaven knows what a scare Kangaxx was. I'll need to count rounds more than ever.

Cheers! Good luck to everyone else!

I don't rightly know. In the illithid lair in the sewers, I used ProMW extensively and Devour Brain always get in for some odd reason. I thought, "Maybe it's like Wing Buffet now, unblockable blah" so I just went with it and eventually discovered that the attack should miss for it to not trigger. I might have forgotten ProMW here but I'm pretty sure it got through before.

Anyway, update on Monty. He's finished the Githyanki lair and the Demilich (woohoo). The latter wasn't really a tough battle. I should just really find a way to deal with those darn uber-healing Planetars. Will compress and upload the videos in a while.

It seems like the SCS scripts are fairly random, so probably the conditions were in place for him to use Maze before as well but in the script he would only cast it some fraction of the time the conditions were met, which is why he delayed. With the random scripting you're going to see what seems like intelligent behaviour every so often (even in situations the author of the script did not anticipate), which is the strength of writing scripts that way.

The SCS mages' spellbooks are also randomised at install, meaning it's hard to predict when you'll come up against another Maze user. Although if you've kept the same install from previous games then each mage will have the same spells as he did in that game. Triggers and Sequencers etc. are randomised on reload so they're even more unpredictable.

How many PfMagic scrolls are there?

Finished Saladrex via a really cheesy way using Tuigan Bow, about 200 arrows, Offensive Spin, Whirlwind Attack, Resonating Weapon, Greater Malison, and Lower Resistance.
