**** 2HS, ** 2 handed weapon style.

I lead Imoen, Jaheira and a ranger called Minsc to freedom. There are a couple of close calls where I am blinded and susceptible to critical arrow strikes meaning I have to gulp one blue potion. Still, I've got the Sword of Chaos so it was worth it.

Then Imoen goes and gets herself arrested. What now?

Durga, Zerker/Thief

Waukeen’s Promenade

The Circus

Upon exiting the dungeon, Durga began to explore her surroundings in Athkatla. She soon realized that she was in the premier shopping district of the area, and marveled at some of the nice items to be found inside the Adventurer’s Mart. But the shopkeepers didn’t like her much due to her low reputation and low charisma, and as a result the prices were way beyond her means. Nevertheless, she sold some of her loot and purchased a few potions, such as oil of speed, invisibility, and master thievery.

She then discovered that the visiting Circus was having some strange problems. She ventured inside to see if she could solve them and profit in the process. She did. Kalah died to a backstab, while Durga was still under the affect of the invisi potion she had just purchased. This left her with the 3 invisi potions she had collected from the shadow thieves inside the dungeon. The loot included some cash and a ring that would boost her charisma and help tremendously with store prices.

A Dream

She was tired now and found a room for the night at the Mithrest Inn nearby, and slept until dawn. But her sleep was restless and disturbed by strange dreams. She dreamt that all of Athkatla was on fire, and that she and she alone could put it out and thus save all the living beings there. But she did nothing. She just watched as the fire devoured all living creatures. Suddenly, she realized that she herself had set the fire. She herself was the Destoyer—in the Form of Time, the Slayer of all beings, who had come to purge the land, to purge the world through death and destruction.

She had a sacred mission to accomplish, and it didn’t matter to her if the world viewed her as chaotic evil, and a monster in human form—she knew that she was an immortal goddess in human form, whose ways are mysterious to mortal minds. The fact is that all mortal beings die anyway; they inevitably die. And so, she was simply changing the time-table—so that they die sooner rather than later.

Den of Seven Vales

The next morning she heard that a group of adventurers with nasty dispositions were staying upstairs at the Den of Seven Vales next door. She decided to check them out. To be cautious, when she went upstairs, she laid a set of traps just outside their door. She then invoked enrage, hid in shadows, and stepped inside the room to scope them out.

A mage named Sorcerous Amon began to cast a divination spell to reveal Durga, which Durga didn’t like at all. The mage was foolishly unprotected, not wearing any stoneskins—so Durga quickly backstabbed him into chunks before the divination spell was finished. She then grabbed the cloak of non-detection and the wand of lightning from his dead body and fled downstairs before anyone else could react effectively.

Pooky followed her downstairs. He was severely wounded by the traps and thus dispatched easily. The others died eventually to a cat and mouse game, where Durga was the cat and they were the mice—in other words they all died to quick backstabs, followed by Durga fleeing and hiding in shadows before they could strike her. The entire group was thus dispatched, without Durga taking a single hit point of damage, while she was using nothing more than the normal katana found in the starting dungeon—a very satisfying outcome.

But most importantly, she now had the miraculous cloak of non-detection, which would render her immune to all divination spells while hidden in shadows—an invaluable tool against SCSII’s mages and assassins (who tend to use their detect invisibility skill to reveal merely invisible characters).

This was the first real piece of strategic gear that would allow Durga to fulfill her goal. The next step in her strategic game would involve obtaining some boots of speed. It was toward that goal that Durga now set her mind.

Pilgrim the Priest of Lathander(21)->Mage:

Pilgrim completed the Planar Sphere quest:

* Clay Golem
* Kayardi, Entu and company. These guys can be dangerous since (at least) one of them casts Maze.
* Taibela, Necre and company. These guys aren't that dangerous, but better safe than sorry.
* Golems in the "gear" room.
* Elder Orb.
* Messed up a bit against Tolgerias and wound up without summons, spells and buffs. Tolgerias started to cast something at Pilgrim, but he ran away up to the previous level and came back with more Skeleton Warriors. The fire room and the ice room were dealt with.
* The demons outside: First, Second and the third fell in much the same manner.
* Once back in Athkatla, Pilgrim completed the stronghold quests and forged the Item Upgrade Sorcerian Ring (+1 saves, +1 AC, +1 spell slot for levels 1-7.).

Pilgrim was mage level 16 (nearing 17) when the stronghold quests were all done.

He went back to Firkraag's dungeon to finish up the random encounters and a minor quest:

* Greater Werewolves in the passage (and the ambush). Reached L17 here.
* Samia & co.: Pilgrim isn't afraid to get his hands dirty with a little melee even if he's terrible at it :).
* The Elder/Ancient Vampires. The screenshot makes it look easier than it was, since the last of the vampires were destroyed in a relatively open area. The first few vampires had moved up towards to the narrow passage to Samia and the confined space meant that Pilgrim was in severe danger of getting completely boxed in by rats. (He was invisible so he was never in direct danger, but they detect the player even when invisible and tend to surround the character.) In the end, a group of skeleton warriors was able to to power their way through, though the vampires put up a much better fight than the vanilla vampires. This required a couple or rests.

Decided the leave Firkraag to his devices since Pilgrim didn't really have the requisite spells/HLAs to deal with him safely.

Back in Athkatla Pilgrim took care of a few more minor quests:

* Dennis and the Mercenaries of Ritavin.
* Sewer Illithid. Skeleton Warriors carried the day again. Even though "my" Illithid can't see invisible characters they Astral Travel directly to the player even if unable to see him/her -- this was quite disconcerting though it is manageable. It just means that CHARNAME has to actually keep somewhat close to his entourage.

(Pilgrim reached Mage level 18 here picked Summon Planetar as his first HLA. Instantly castable summons rock.)

* Cleared the undead side dungeon in Bodhi's lair for a little more easy EXP.
* Took on several groups of Cowled Wizards. Lacking Imp. Alacrity, the general method was to buff (slowly) in the Graveyard and to move to the Bridge District and summon a Planetar. The first five waves were complety neutralized by the Planetar's Insect Plague spell. The 6th wave of course, has Zallanora. Insect Plague works pretty well on her too, but somehow she was still able to escape and summon a Pit Fiend. I'm not sure whether it's a ForceSpell(), or whether the Insect Plague had expired. Pilgrim should really have been more aggressive here, he had a couple of ADHW at his disposal -- those could have been let out while Zallanora was failing on every casting. In the end things worked out nicely, though -- it's great to be getting EXP for summoned fiends again :).

This left Pilgrim needing 125K EXP to reach level M19.

imgur seems nice. The pictures load very quickly, even quicker than Photobucket. And full quality even, with zoom. Too bad that, yes, that it's cranky on the link. You have to press enter on the address bar.

Anyway, to confirm your suspicions, I'm thinking that Zallanora has a ReallyForceSpell() action in her script that summons a fiend. I was pretty sure I was hitting her one time with 10APR and she summoned a Gelugon without a hitch. Crazy ****, really.

Anyway, nice work. Good luck getting the next 4 levels!

Coltan the halfling bounty hunter entering the challenge

When you import a character from BG 1, BG 2 gives you the opportunity to kit yourself at that time - I chose bounty hunter. I waited to submit my challenge until I made it out of Chateau Irenicus.

Coltan's character sheet after escaping Chateau Irenicus

For the most part he will be using a sling, throwing traps around, and of course de-trapping and picking locks. He got some so-so HP rolls in BG 1 so he will have to stay in the back most of the time. Pretty sad, but Imoen the mage has much better HP than he did.

Pilgrim the Priest of Lathander(21) -> Mage:

Ever hungry for EXP, Pilgrim kept doing the little quests around Athkatla:

  • He went to take care of the Elemental Lich. The Lich was vorpal'ed by the Planetar. The Pit Fiend summoned by the Lich was also killed pretty quickly by the Plantar. The Pit Fiend "missed" his wish.
  • Emboldened by this, Pilgrim went for the Shade Lich. Again, the Planetar saved the day.
  • Pilgrim did the Fallen Paladins quest, which landed him 3K EXP short of mage level 19 and so he just went to the Graveyard to kill a random spider spawn. HLA pick: Improved Alacrity.

Back to the main quest, Pilgrim helped Aran with his tasks:
  • Mook. This was at hour 22, but apparently the night-time vampires don't show up this early. I was hoping to provoke an attack.
  • The traitors were ably obliterated by 4xSkeleton Warriors and a Planetar. (Overkill, really. :) )

To avoid surprises later, Pilgrim took a little detour here to kill the night-time vampires in an organized way. The routine was to buff in the graveyard, enter the bridge district, summon a few Skeleton Warriors and a Planetar and let them loose.

Once the ambushes were over with, Pilgrim did the temple quest in the slums (at night, hence the "preparation" by making sure the vampires were all dead.)

Returning to "close" the quest, Pilgrim noticed a large building and went inside. Predictably, he was ambushed, but his personal army prevailed. Having rested to regain his spells, he went upstairs. The Planetar was actually stunned by the Celestial Fury, but the casters had already been tagged with Insect Plague. Fortunately, the Planetar recovered and (along with a few Skeleton Warriors) proceeded to wipe the floor with the rest of the enemies.

Getting back to Aran's tasks, Pilgrim went to the graveyard. The Planetar's Globe of Blades proved its worth against Tanova. More vampires dead meant that Pilgrim was now level 20 mage. HLA pick: Comet. (This is the Oversight Comet spell which is not useless as opposed to its vanilla counterpart.). Bodhi was sent packing almost instantly by the Planetar and buffed Skeleton Warriors.

Afterwards, Pilgrim forged the IMoD+2 and Pitchwife+5 (acid-themed club from Item Upgrades).

It seemed there was very little EXP left to earn in Ch3, but there was still a Pit Fiend and the Lich he was summoned by.

Thinking that mage level 21 might be within reach, Pilgrim went and completed the first level of Watcher's Keep (everything except the ritual). As it turned out this was not quite enough.

Pilgrim was now just 35K shy of mage level 21 and headed off to Spellhold. The only remaining quests in Athkatla were dragon and/or Lich-related and I didn't fancy Pilgrim's chances with his limited spell selection. (The dragons could probably have been killed with LR + Skull Trap (sequencer and Skull Trap) under Improved Alacrity, but I didn't feel it was worth taking the chance since none of their items are crucial.)

Meta: It really was a bit of a blunder not to handle the night-time vampires, Aran's first quest (and a few of the other "fighty" quests, such as the Fallen Paladins) as a PoL instead of some of the more mage-friendly quests. This phase of the game was needlessly constrained because of the Arcane spellcasting restriction.

Will post a little follow-up on Spellhold a little later today.

Monty the Blade "Update":

Monty is officially on hold. I am running a custom thief kit I created and might enter it as an NR. It's basically a thief that specializes in (gasp!) one-on-one encounters. My little bard should be up and about again after my test runs.

Wish me luck. And good luck to you people, too. Have bloody good fun, everyone.

Pilgrim the Priest of Lathander(21) -> Mage:

Upon landing in Brynnlaw, Pilgrim killed another vampire ambush, and incidentally helped Ginia & Ason to escape.

He killed Perth the Adept (well, the Planetar did) and reached mage level 21. HLA pick: Energy Blades.

Spellhold and the maze itself were pretty standard fare: buffed Skeleton Warriors + Planetar made minced meat of everything. Amusingly, the Planetar killed the Pit Fiend in that screenshot just before it panicked.

Showing just how much EXP is doled out during the Spellhold maze, Pilgrim reached level 22 mage by "helping" Dace Sontan. HLA pick: Dragon's Breath.

This meant that his Priest of Lathander class was reactivated, yay! The immediate benefits included +6 death save, +6 base THAC0. It also meant he could now wield the Shield of Harmony + Pitchwife and a Helm of Defense for proper "passive" defense against charm, hold, etc.

The rest of the Maze was finished very quickly, but here's a few screenshots to show off his melee prowess:

Here's the current character sheet:

Posted Image

(This is obviously fully buffed. He's wielding the Pitchwife+5.)

Once out of the maze, Pilgrim defeated Irenicus (almost in an instant) and agreed to go with Saemon Havarian on his ship. Pilgrim reentered the asylum after being teleported outside by Saemon, killed a golem and retrieved a couple of items left behind by Irenicus. Going back outside, Pilgrim met some wraiths and decided to Turn them. He leveled up to M23 and picked Extra L6 Spell as his last HLA before the level cap.

Pilgrim has just left the asylum area and is resting in the hills "above" Brynnlaw.

(Meta: Given the overpoweredness of this character and the extreme tedium of buffing with the huge number of buffs, I'm going to let this character "rest" for a while while I pursue a radically different character, namely a solo Monk. If/when I do resume playing this character I'll have to concoct a buff script.)

I'm actually using a buff script for the small fry with Monty. I could have always worked with less than necessary but since it's a No Reload, I just go Hotkey(D) and rest after kicking everyone's behind.

Anyway, good luck with your monk run.

Arinja, level 31 solo totemic druid.

At Sendai's, Arinja gathered her forces to defeat the guards, allowing her to enter the lair.

While Sunnis was distracting the myconids, Arinja used her energy blades to kill the colonies. With a well-placed NB, the umber hulk- and spider groups were defeated by the summons.

For the drow guard captain, Sunnis blocked any drow from reaching Arinja, while the druid killed the captain with energy blades before taking the key and stealthing through the tunnels (no reason to fight).

Odamaron once again killed himself with his own symbol of death. Ogremoch was much more difficult, due to his insane physical damage output and his high magic resistance - NB didn't work, but a deva and, once again, Sunnis were able to keep him from Arinja long enough for her to kill him with energy blades.
A bigger army of summons was used to charge the priestress, until eventually all of her powerful allies were dead. The duel against the captain was easily won. A CC'ed deva killed all of the mind flayers.

Now, it was time to challenge Sendai. I unlearned about 90% of my spells and replaced them with even more summong spells before entering.
For the first few phases of the battle, a deva was enough to occupy the Sendai clones. After three clones (there was an elemental prince helping inbetween), I had to summon additional forces due to too many drow spawning.
With some of the less powerful summons, including mountain bears, eventually all the clones were brought down. By the way, I decided to rest after the 5th sendai clone by pulling her away with the summons and using the pocket plane spell. Just a precaution for safety, there weren't any particular problems.

Anyway, the real sendai appeared. With my tactic, this battle is about having more summons than she has spells (and Sendai has a lot of spells!). In the first rounds, I had a deva chase Sendai around, but soon I had to resummon her and an elemental prince. After Sendai killed both of them, she was pretty much out of offensive spells, but she had lots of summoning and disabling spells left. I started using all the lesser summons - mountain bears, spirit animals, the statue summongs and summon animals I-spells. Sendai summoned mostly skeleton warriors and sword spiders, so I decided to put her under pressure with an additional deva (my last one).

However, the drow managed to kill her again, proving that she isn't as bad in melee situations as you might think.  But with the use of some more summoned allies, I depleted even her summoning spells, so she only had mantle and stoneskin spells left. I dispelled her stoneskins and used, being out of regular summons myself, the staff of woods to call shambling mounds. Finally, after lots of bullets, Sendai was defeated.

Next time, I'll  continue with watcher's keep.

Got a bit overzealous with my mage/thief, she was backstabbed by Brennan Risling thus ending her run. Probably should not do mencar straight out of the opening dungeon. I am interested in the class however, probably need to lay off the haste+stealthing.

Highlights from Alana's Recent Adventures

I have a bit less time to play and post these days but I can offer some sparse coverage of Alana's recent adventures.

With Umber Hulks, Yuan-Ti, Wolfweres, and a generous steam of summons by his side, this Yuan-Ti Mage made a nusiance of himself. Nonetheless, Alana stayed in control and prevailed.
Posted Image

With Ages in the mainhand and the Sword of Arvoreen in the off, Alana dropped the Clay Golems and recovered the Bowstring of Gond.
Posted Image

There were few kinks in Irenicus's armor of spells, but there were fewer in Alana's defenses. After drawing out Remove Magic, Irenicus's moves were each effectively countered with Potions and item charges. Alana's Ages wielding-potion-chugging clone was the most challenging part of the battle. And while the inmates did not fair well, Arrow of Dispelling-> Sling finished Irenicus before he could pose a meaningful threat to Alana.

@Enuhal. Thanks for your earlier comments on Alana. She's been fun.  I feel a little embarrased about creating such a sterotypical halfling, but sometimes "classics" feel right. I've enjoyed playing her.

So you know, I'm really rooting for Arinja. Go get those Wyrms! :)

High intelligence and low wisdom immediately conjures up something like a mad professor to me. I struggled with the other extreme before thinking about people who have limited education but a lifetime of experiences (although 3/21 is obviously an extreme). Anyway;

George, TN human male kensai.

I ask Minsc to stay with a cleric/mage called Aerie while Jaheira and I investigate. She barkskins me and we kill a few beasties or illusions. I cast DUHM to kill a final set and Kalah.

Hendak asks for and receives our help, then wants us to deal with slavery. We try the front door but it is locked, so we ask around until a thief/illusionist called Jan agrees to help. He opens the door then casts stoneskin. Almost immediately a cowled wizard starts to appear so we dive inside the building.

We kill a few slavers but more arrive. How we laugh when we are all held.

Thank you, Alesia. I actually don't think a halfling fighter is that stereotypical - to my knowledge, the cliché halfling is usually a thief.

Arinja, level 31 solo totemic druid.

For Watcher's Keep level 3, Arinja decided to ignore the battles she didn't have to fight. The no magic zones would be painful, and there's no reason to take any unneccesary risks.

The first big fight was against Tahazzar. Luckily, as a neutral character, he just wanted to talk to me and I pretended to accept his quest, giving me time and space to buff and summon! I initiated combat, quickly taking out the most dangerous enemies with energy blades. After Tahazzar was dead, Chan and a deva managed to clean up all the remaining demons.

Next battle was with the succubi (which I entered immediately after coming from a no magic zone, so no CC). I still had my helm of charm protection in the bag of holding, though, so there was no risk involved. A CC'ed deva eventually took out the enemies.

The next demon battle was much harder, since Ka'Rashur was aggressive immediatly. Arinja just manged to summon a deva before the demons reached her, so she could add an elemental prince and cast Nature's Beauty. However, after a few enemies were defeated, the summons were killed and Arinja didn't get the chance to resummon, so she had to retreat through the portal, resting and trying again. The next attempt was much more successful, especially because she got Sunnis instead of Zaaman Rul - and Sunnis is just so much better against physically strong opponents. With some NB's and energy blades, all the demons were killed.

There was actually no reason to fight anything else in level 3, so she just went to meet the cambion. Lost the first round, won the second and finally got a strong scimitar now. Arinja returned to Amkethran to get the priest to cast remove curse on her before entering level 4.

Some spirit animals quickly cleared the main level, while Arinja took care of the magic golems. By the way, I changed her basic weapon setup to spectral brand + belm for now.

With some deva and prince summonings, the druid then fought her way through the githyanki lair, eventually defeating their leader. She used a protection from undead scroll for the demi-lich (still have a protection from magic scroll, too).

Arinja decided to fight Saladrex as well, maybe she'll be using the staff of the ram. Summoned fire elementals + Deva and attacked with energy blades. Zaaman Rul helped while Arinja attacked the dragon in melee. The battle was actually rather long because I didn't prepare that well and didn't have lots of burst damage with me, so I had to finish him with my rather weak melee attacks, but eventually it was done.

On the main level, a deva killed some shadows. Another one, buffed with CC, defeated the first mind flayers and umber hulks, while Arinja used Chan for another big group. Another buffed deva killed the illithid vampires, and Arinja attacked and blinded Rock and Garrock.

The reward of +1 to all stats and +5% magic resistance might be useful. I thought about doing level 5, but there isn't really anything I need from there. Instead, the next battle of Arinja's will be against Draconis.

Sorry for your loss, Gate. Good luck in BG1!

And there are even more sad news. As expected, my elaborate plan to kill Draconis didn't work.

However, a rather simple and pretty stupid one did.

Let me elaborate: I based my combat strategy on my previous solo totemic druid who I've played with on insane difficulty. Killing Draconis took her about 10 tries, and some of the major things I remembered were that Draconis kills summons pretty much instantly with his breath weapon, but you still need a deva for remove fear. The invisible stalkers are not a threat, but Draconis' high physical damage is too much in a straight battle without summons - the breath weapon doesn't hurt the druid (druid resistance bonus and shadow dragon armor), but without the summons, the totemic druid is nothing.

So I assumed the best way to avoid his insane physical damage is blinding him. However, since Draconis has a high magic resistance, one should cast the lvl 5 spell "Magic Resistance" on him first to reduce it. Since Draconis has also the abilty to heal and the druid isn't well equiped with burst damage, the dragon should be affected by an insect plague spell as well. And all that has to be done while staying alive - and draconis will constantly kick you around and become invisible at the worst possible times.

So there are at least 3 spells you have to cast on him, and he still has magic resistance, so you have to learn and use those multiple times. If you succeed at that, you can start killing him with summons, energy blades and ranged attacks.

It should have been obvious to me that this strategy is basically useless and needlessly complicated, but it somehow was the only thing that worked for my previous totemic druid.

Arinja quickly defeated Draconis' human form, which, as usual, was no threat at all. After her enemy became a dragon, Arinja summoned a prince and tried to pull off the combination of spells. However, for her Magic Resistant cast, the dragon turned invisible and procceeded to resist any spell Arinja tried to cast on him, including 3 NB's, Insect Plague and some Lightnings. With her summons dead and the ironskin gone, Arinja had to retreat to Amkethran - only got Draconis to slightly injured.

That's the good thing about this battle - unless you really overestimate your ironskins and health, you can usually retreat and try again. For the next try, Arinja tried a different strategy. This one didn't work as well. After Magic Resistance and one NB failed again, she simply started nuking Draconis with her lightning spells - they actually do a lot of damage to him and I'd generally recommend using them, but he resisted too many and Arinja had to run as she brought him only to injured before he destroyed her ironskins.

Don't know if the saying exists in English, but in German we have this "All good things are three"-thing. For the next try, Arinja, frustrated with the dragon's magic resistance and his tendency to escape any attempt at lowering it, decided to go for a more physical strategy. As soon as she returned from pocket plane, she used Vhailor's Helmet and let her Simulacrum summon a Deva while she summoned a Prince, as Draconis already attacked. The prince was Chan, and, amazingly, he did a very good job at surviving, mainly because Draconis didn't use his breath weapon. Arinja and her clone decided not to go with any fancy spells and both summoned energy blades, starting to just attack the dragon with 10 apr each. The Deva died, but I realized the druids were dealing a lot of damage, so after Chan was killed as well and the clone was tanking Draconis, Arinja resummoned a prince - Sunnis (very good!) - and they both used their second energy blades spell. While the dragon was trying to get rid of sunnis, Arinja finally killed him with her energy blades while getting pushed away.

Didn't expect wo win a battle because of high burst damage at this point in the game. Oh well. I'm happy :)
Guess I was rather needlessly scared of the battle, since Draconis had no real way to kill me unless I would've made some big mistakes.
I just assisted Chan and a deva with the greater werewyvern before closing the game for today.

Grats Enuhal on beating Draconis. My solo fighter/druid only beat him after at least a dozen reloads. I finally beat him with elemental distractions while I greater whirlwinded x2 and just whirlwind with my sling - with haste active of course.

Don't know if the saying exists in English, but in German we have this "All good things are three"-thing.

Indeed - usually said as "third time lucky".  Hope Arinja continues to make good progress.

Nature's Beauty - 7th level druid spell I usually use against physically strong opponents to blind them.
Thanks for all the congratulations :)
