Lastly, it may be breaking some unspoken rules of the "challenge" and therefore i prefer asking about whether or not i should even bother.
For example : We use some mod-added items, and i did not involve some bosses (or rather i did not show some bosses on screen, as They are easier than the ones covered)
Both of those may be a problem.

Edit : And there were quite a few technical-reloads.

Regards!

I'm sure there won't be a problem, there's no requirement to do a "completionist" playthrough. As for the mod added items, they're a trade-off for difficulty enhancing mods... Lots of participants have used them. Anyway, your run looks interesting, you'd be the first poster (AFAIK anyway) to complete SCSII + Ascension on Insane with no reloads.

Corey the level 14 inquisitor and his fellow 3 paladins continue their adventure...

When we last heard of of our all paladin band, they were in Spellhold. I had to do something that I would definitely not do from a RP point of view -- I sent Imoen packing even though the paladins had room in our party for her. I just felt it would be too unbalancing as she would be in the party too long. I want to see how far a group of paladins can go and she's not a paladin...

Most of the dungeon was pretty straightforward. In somewhat of a twist, MANY of the loot here is upgrades when usually it just gets sold or put in my bag of holding. All rings were upgrades, even those Kensai/Monk items were for the head, as the party has mostly just plain helments. Even THIS was an upgrade for Hanna - in all my other runs it just get sold (to me, full plate + a protection ring is superior - same AC, but bonus to piercing and to save). But for Hanna she is wearing Ankheg armor so it is a small upgrade.

One tough fight was the book with monsters - the mindflayer killed Joshua almost instantly even though he had -9 AC and also I had him gulp 2 potions of genius before the fight. As if I needed any confirmation, need to minimize this party's contact with mindflayers. Fortunately RoR brought him back to speed.  I was real impressed at level 12 for the paladins, lot of their saves are really low. They should do well against the save or else type spells. Party leveled to 13 after escaping the first level. Corey levels first now, thanks to his "losing soul" quest.

When we faced the keeper of the inmates, we did something quite different - we killed him. We usually pay him, but our gold was really low and there are several purchases I want to make in Ust Natha.

Irenicus and his assassins weren't much trouble, though I'm certainly not going to say it's quite fast, just sure. (3 arcane always seems the fastest, 3 sets of magic missiles not good for Johnny boy).

I ended up going with Saemon for 2 very important reasons: 1) gold really low still, and there's a merchant in the City of Caverns that buys stuff for really good rates (best in the game if I'm not mistaken), so the junk there should help this area 2) Cloak of Mirroring really my only chance of completing much of the Beholder's lair. The greenstone amulet and the sling of Avoreen in particular would be helpful, as Joshua still doesn't have  ranged weapon.

I ended up siding with the king. Found some undead but holy smite/sunray from daystar took care of those, and the rebels weren't much competetion. Battled Villynaty and he and his buddies put much better fight but to no avail.

Reporting our success to the king got us level 14. We got the 2nd piece to the wave halberd, Hanna will love to use that once we can assemble it. Maybe smack Kangaxx with it? It's an idea, anyways...

Looking at Coreys saves I was really pleased and impressed by them. Can't remember if I ever played an inquisitor myself, but makes sense their saves are good.

@Grond0 @Corey on invisibility and Firkraag

Quite so, I should have read all the posts more carefully <sigh>

@Corey Still wonder if a mad dash with as much fire resistance as you could muster might have been worth a try. However, as you say, you would have lacked many potions etc. Risky too. In any case, it is a moot point now.

Good luck in the Underdark

But why would a high rep party of LG paladins have to pay Lunk? I find that  with a high rep CG PC it's easy to convince him to take a FREE vacation until Jon is dealt with. Does one of your mods. make Lunk more of a money grubber?

I don't have any mods. I haven't tried EVERY dialog choice before, maybe there's a way to do it without paying him. Usually I have to part with 2000 gold before he will release the inmates.

Good doesn't have to pay a dime in vanilla (assuming fixpack). Neutral has to pay. I suppose, but never tried it, that Evil has to kill him.

Congrats Stworka! It sounds like you've enjoyed an outstanding run. That's wonderful.

I, for one, would appreciate seeing a link. It seems like a nice opportunity to get some exchange going with another No-Reload community. I'm sure we can learn things from each other. :)

I have the official patch only. I don't supposed you remember the dialog choice wordings that good person should use?

Vemric, LG human male monk. Travelling with Keldorn, Jaheira, Nalia, Imoen and Minsc.

Yakman Dan... describes more of the Keep, so we head back into a githyanki encampment. Minsc decides it is payback time and tries their own weapon. We're too quick in the first two rooms so Minsc starts the third on his own until we get a result.
Image IPB

He switches back to FoA and iMoD and we clear the rest of the encampment. Minsc uses Angurdval to increase his strength, then switches to FoA mistake then iMoD and Daystar before hiding in the shadows. It's a battle to the death Minsc is berserk so I can't force a sunray & screenshot of him is after the battle.
Image IPB

A dragon called Saladrax is next, so we review our spells then rest, sequence spells, rest and buff to quote a mod, everything but potions. Then we attack from the conversation.
Image IPB

Keldorn is buffeted but returns quickly. We've cast improved alacrity, lowered resistance, sequenced Melfs acid arrows, sent insect summons and attacked with WW/GWW and once more screenshot isn't working. My GWW kills Saladrax, good job too as Imoen, Nalia and Jaheira seem to be casting spells on themselves instead of Saladrax must remember just to attack in future.

Serena the solo Monk (L40):

Having vanquished the Illithid, Serena went towards the Underdark exit.

She encountered some Demon Knights, using Lunar Stance for protection from Level Drain. She was victorious against the first two knights, but had taken quite a lot of damage, even with -18 AC. Fortunately, they didn't seem too coordinated, and she was able to  dispatch them easily enough. She used Fire Tooth to kill the final Demon Knight. Due to the low duration of Lunar Stance, Serena did get level drained a few times here, but she'd brought plenty of Scrolls of Restoration, so that wasn't a problem.

Serena then left the Underdark without much ceremony -- she just stealthed past all the fighting drow/elves and went straight to Elhan. Traveling back to Athkatla, she convinced Drizzt to help fight Bodhi. Before going up against Bodhi, Serena forged a few items:

  • Stormlord's Heels (Boots of Grouding + Boots of Speed combo)
  • Blizzard Boots (Boots of the North + Boots of Speed combo)
  • Amulet of Ilmater (+1 AC, +3 Saves, Immune to Poison, Heal (once/day))
  • Ring of Elemental Mastery (combo of the three elemental "control" rings: +1 AC, 50% fire res, 50% elec res, Charm Elemental (3x/day, no save), Summon Elementals (1 each, once/day, friendly), Improved Invisibility (once/day))
  • The Equalizer. This was forged simply for its equippable confusion immunity -- not sure if there's any confusion attacks that can get past MR, but better safe than sorry.

Since there was no real reason to stick around in Athkatla any longer, Serena went to kill Bodhi. (Well, the Ring of the Ram would perhaps have been useful, but...)

In Bodhi's lair, the vampires did their annoy CHARNAME as much as possible thing, but with the help of Drizzt & co. they weren't much bother. One the lower level, everything proceeded according to plan, except that Bodhi refused to show herself. After some time she did show and died soon thereafter.

Serena returned the Lanthorn and went into Suldanesselar. She sometimes used terrain to her advantage to kill golems without taking any damage herself, but mostly it was just straight-up melee. There were also some Rakshasa types, but they weren't able to cast anything with Serena was under Shadow Stance. They died. On the way to see the dragon, Serena encountered a few more golemsa Nabassu and an mage called Raamilat. Serena used her Dragon Fist, so the mage didn't last long.

Trying to be clever, Serena dropped all her items and talked to the dragon... but she must have said something wrong, so a fight ensued. Luckily Serena was able to re-equip all her items, but unfortunately was stuck in the corner. She was buffeted several times and had to retreat back to the city several times to heal up (including chugging three potions of regeneration), but finally beat the beast. She spent something like 15 healing potions here.

Serena went back to the Temple of Rillfane and quickly placed the items in the altar. This let her avoid a non-trivial fight and opened the passage to the Tree of Life. Serena defeated the stragglers on the way to the Tree of Life, and entered. She killed the parasites and prepared for the final fight.

As it turned out, Irenicus couldn't do much against 108% MR (with the Sword of Balduran). Once he'd spent his Maze casts, Serena started pelting him with Fire Tooth. Amazingly, its fire damage ignores PfMW! In between getting interrupted constantly and Serena's 98% MR, there was little he could do. Death.

The hell trials were completed thusly:

  • +2 STR
  • +2 all saving throws
  • +10% MR (yay, can finally dump the Sword of Balduran)
  • Immunity to +1 (and less) weapons. Serena used the Dragonslayer sword for immunity to fear when getting the tear.
  • +20% elemental resistances.

It was time for the final showdown with Irenicus.

Serena buffed with Shadow Stance, Lunar Stance and triggered the final fight... and was instantly killed by a Baalor. It turns out aTweaks mods these suckers to have a Vorpal hit (apparently with no save). Her Lunar Stance does confer immunity to the Slay effect, but apparently not to vorpal hits.

It seems the only way to have defeated the Baalor without requiring luck (as she seemingly did during the fight with the Baalor in the Underdark), would be to avoid getting into melee range, but it would definitely have been tricky to use Fire Tooth for killing it. See, these demons also have Teleport without Error every single round, it seems.

Oh well -- it was a fun run. I was pretty impressed with how powerful monks do get (eventually!) once their MR gets going. I'm not sure I really exploited the Oversight HLAs to their fullest. I certainly missed GWW at many points, but Shadow Stance is undoubtedly very powerful defensively.

(Meta: aTweaks fiends are definitely gone from my future installs. I only play no-reload and such unavoidable risks are just intolerable -- AFAICT the only truly reliable way to defeat these guys would be PfMW or something crazy like the BH endless maze... and I really want to avoid being forced to play arcane spellcasters.)

Congratulations AH on getting as far as you did! Some mods definitely push the player in being an arcane caster of some kind, no doubt. I don't think a level 40 monk would have lost there in vanilla BG 2 with only ToB installed.

I don't have any mods. I haven't tried EVERY dialog choice before, maybe there's a way to do it without paying him. Usually I have to part with 2000 gold before he will release the inmates.

I had an old save with a CN half-orc (but my rep=20 at this point) and checked the diaogue. It's the 2nd of the 5 choices on the 3rd page (the "you just serve him out of fear...") - for the first two pages you would obviously use the question choice rather than an action/give order choice. Lonk was quite reasonable after that, so maybe he goes by Rep. rather than G or N or E. For old times sake I played out the battle without bothering to buff - just ranged weapons, MMMs, and a Summons and much to my surorise 3 of the crazies survived, But they wouldn't talk to me afterwards; no sense of gratitude at all Image IPB

Well : Here it is. (Bay 12 forums)
It's a link to the first post, it has an Index. Brace Yourself : It's a roleplaying run as well, and as such, i rarely showed details of fights with trash mobs. The exceptions are : Improved Ilyich trash mobs, and chapter 3 : Fighting the entire town watch, radiant order, bandits and vampires in almost endless waves of enemies.

Boss Fights begin in chapter 3 (There is 1 fight in the first, 0 in the 2nd, 11 in chapter 3, 2 in chapter 4)
We are now post underdark. From the unlisted fights, we also got rid of Kangaxx and Firkraag, but since Saladrex and the WK demi-lich were somewhat tougher, i only showed them.

Lastly : "Quality" of the updates is somewhat low in the first chapter, i started it so long ago..

Alternatively you could go Here (Youtube account) and view just the boss fights. Ignore the very last Ust'Natha (the one with MINSC!) as it is not a part of the run.

I will resume the run soon, this weekend perhaps.

That's about it, have fun! ^_^

Vemric, LG human male monk. Travelling with Keldorn, Jaheira, Nalia, Imoen and Minsc.

A planetar raises Minsc once, our only casualty in a flayer lair. Spiders and magic golems are quickly cleared, as are orogs and killer mimics. Rock and Garock are no match for Keldorn and Minsc with WW/GWW. Carston has an "accident" and we start to thumb through the notes of Lum for his machine workings.

Imoen takes intelligence, Keldorn charisma, Jaheira wisdom and I take the rest. Then we head into the lower reaches and take the three door test, defeating a horde, a dragon and a puzzling imp. Then I complete the eternal warrior challenge and decide which pedestal to open; only the bottom one will move.

A lich. Azamantes is Carsomyr'd, but the flming skulls cremate Keldorn. We get rid of them and summon a planetar to bring him back.

The button and orb game is tedious until we foolishly get some beholders unprotected. Minsc grabs the shield of Balduran while Keldorn and I rely on speed and magic resistance. It works somehow. But now I am very nervous about the final guardians.

We lay some skull traps, delayed fireballs then load spell sequencers and rest. All but potion buff are cast and Minsc readies the iMoD and shield of Balduran. Attack!
Image IPB

Minsc has been charmed but I have killed the hive mother.
Image IPB

Keldorn casts dispel magic to try and free Minsc, and switches to Y'tossi to prevent buffs. Minsc picks on a de-buffed Nalmissra while I GWW the huntress.
Image IPB

Minsc changes from shield to unyielding axe while I add another kill to my list.
Image IPB

Two WW and my GWW mean Nalmissra is my next victim as Keldorn finishes Y'tossi and we're left with a skeleton or two to finish off.
Image IPB

That seemed to last an age and then finish in seconds, good fun though.

Corey the level 14 Inquisitor and his fellow 3 paladins continue their adventure...

Via a rope, the party climbed down from the City of Caverns into the Underdark. We smelled some mind flayers north of us, we didn't feel a need to mess with them. So instead we moved east and found a lot of elementals. Their supply was almost endless, but we got good use of Joshua's regeneration ring, we let him fight injured since he would slowly heal himself on his own. This part went OK.

We could hear some drow casting some spells nearby. We summoned a lesser air elemental, level 9 berserker, Kithix, and some skeletons. We did maximum paladin buffs and then charged. They were beat easily, was a bit surprised at that. Some summons were still alive so we charged some nearby spore colonies. People were getting confused so Corey dispelled it. Battle was almost over then I saw this shocker -- hey mindflayer we said we didn't want to fight you!

Nothing to do but engage - he went down fairly fast (yay for that), however before it died it charmed Joshua! And Corey had one last dispel magic to use, fired it..and it could't dispel the charm! (geez, what level are these mindflayers anyways? 30?) Joshua was putting a beating on Lily Gene, we had to use some RoR charges. I'm missing my charm protection helmets...finally the charm wears off.

We peeked to the west and could see some mindflayers just past some stone. We can't melee them but we can range attack them! So range attack them we did. We managed to kill one this way safely. Hanna got stunned, so we waited it out then moved around and killed the last one - no deaths. Good.

We figured we explore a bit further before headed to the gnome village. We headed east, found some aggressive Kua-Toa and guess what happened again? Yep Joshua got charmed! Arghh! Corey had no dispel magics available, so we couldn't dispel the Kua-toa wizards' protections. And worse, when auto-attacking the party kept attacking Joshua. I had to turn off the AI, lot of RoR shots again on Hanna, will have to recharge this soon. Finally the charm wears off and finally the Kua-Toa are dead. I've learned my lesson - Joshua must always have the drinker equipped (which grants charm immunity) unless fighting an enemy requiring +3, which case he will switch to the Flail of Ages.

Party is battered, so we head to the gnome village to rest. They have demonic problem they can't seem to solve (of course). After resting, we take on this next challenge. I do maximum paladin buffs (which at this point is just up to level 3 cleric spells), summon the level 9 berserker, Kithix and a lesser Air Elemental, oh and a skeleton. Corey summons the demon. The demon's initial attack stuns almost everyone except the berserker, Lily Gene and Corey. Lily Gene attacks with her hammer of thunderbolts, Corey with his pitiful Tasheron's Short Bow. This lasts a while, but I made a mistake here, Lily Gene should have activated the haste that she gets with Arbane's sword. She ends up dying, Corey doesn't have a melee weapon that is +3 and the other party members are still stunned. Seems like I need to be the Slayer to solve this, Corey changes into the Slayer and then this happens -- demon killed by a summon a moment later! Lost 2 rep for apparently nothing.

Definitely not the smoothest results, but the run is still going so guess that counts for something...

Mindflayers are 8th level creatures in vanilla, which is why Death Spell works if you can get it past their MR.

The reason you can't dispel their abilities is because they're psionic, not magical.

Corey the level 14 Inquisitor and his fellow TWO Paladin friends...

Well, the family encountered another loss. More on that in a minute. The party successfully cleared out the Kua-Toa Lair. The party also beat the Demon Knights. Hanna used the newly aquired improved haste gauntlets (fromt he Kua Prince) am sure that helped. The armor and strength belt went to Hanna.

Then we freed the trapped souls. Things were going really well at first, but then this happened. Yes, Joshua got imprisoned. In a normal, balanced party this would not be a big deal just cast freedom. But with no arcane in the party, Joshua is gone forever...we'll miss you Joshua.

Some equipment is gone forever again, but only one is important I believe. Am sure most of you can see which one it is:

* drow full pate +5
* regen ring
* The Drinker
* Fortress Shield
* haste boots
* +1 AC Ioun stone
* Cloak of Mirroring

Now that the cloak of mirroring is gone, we will have to pass on the beholder lair as well. Too bad the greenstone amulet might have been nice. It's true I COULD attempt sanctuary but I do not know if there are any See Invisible creatures in the lair - i want to say there is and if even one, that could mean the end. Will have to pass.

Next major decision - to do the Ust Natha quests or kill Adalon. The only battle I am unsure of is the Phaere ambush. So if I kill Adalon I can bypass that. However, there are two items from the drow merchant I really need the firetooth dagger for Lily Gene and the Sentinel Shield. The earth staff could be helpful as well. I have good # of summons now, and with PfE we might make our saves vs. stun/confusion. In addtion we have TON of genius potions, I should be able to get everyone to 20+ INT, so we should survive the INT draining attacks.

Going to go for it. Killing a good dragon is very un-paladin like anyways, we do need to live with ourselves.

Heh, I wouldn't worry about it. Considering that the game was actually over a month or two ago (just hadn't had time to organize all the notes and screenshots), I don't think you could have affected it... unless of course the curse can travel back in time. DUN DUN DUN! :)

I can definitely recommend it... it seems pretty well-balanced to me. The biggest problem is the lack of GWW... that can make otherwise winnable fights nigh-impossible (I was especially worried about the Ravager). If you have GWW you can actually use non-fist weapons effectively for a limited time. An Oversight monk's weapon options are much more limited.

I think I might try a solo vanilla monk with a fresh install at some point just to compare.

Corey the level 15 inquisitor with 2 paladin friends continue their adventure...

So we go to Ust Natha and begin our quests there. The first one (and possibly toughest one) is to save Phaere from 3 mindflayers and 3 umber hulks. We head toward the mindflayer city but there's ambush. Takes a while but we defeat the ambush and get a +4 halberd for Hanna which we immediately identify and equip.

Next was rescuing Phaere. We did PfE on everyone (of course) and used INT potions putting everyone at +20 INT. We had a few weak summons and started the fight. Hanna died quickly, Lily Gene took over tanking and did great. Corey backed away from the main scrap and used his bow when he could. Then victory!

Now the rest of the Ust Natha tasks should be no problem. We defeat a beholder easily, then pretended to wipe out a gnomish patrol, pretended to kill Soulafein, gave Kua-Toa blood to the Matron Mother, stole the real dragon eggs (using sanctuary) and putting Phaere's eggs in its stead, and gave Phaere Soulafein's eggs.

This caused Phaere and the Matron Mother to be killed by their summoned demon, we looted their stuff and booked it out of the city. We repored our success to Adalon and then were transported by the exit. A quick battle ensued but the party did well. We battled our way to the surface and talked to Elhan. He briefed us on what has transpired in our absence, then we headed to the docks to talk to Cromwell.

This of course triggered the Githyanki ambush. The vorpal sword MIGHT come in handy (against golems mainly), so we insisted on keeping it. A fight ensued, but the party did great and succeeded.

Before I talked to Cromwell, I decided on a revenge match with Kangaxx now that we have +4 weapons. When we looked in his room he was on the floor, not too far from the door. We exited immediately and put protection from undead and everyone and charged with our +4 weapons. Kangaxx was killed. His ring went to Hanna. Then Cromwell made our stuff.

I did a lot of equipment shuffling, here's what we have now:
Hanna
Corey
Lily Gene

Intend to do the twisted rune guarded compound next for some more cash.

Well done for making it back to the city Corey - you're setting a good example of how a true hearted paladin can overcome adversity!

Given that you've lost half your force, would you consider adding that good paladin Keldorn to your group?
