It's a pity that a Freedom scroll can't be used by someone with clerical abilities. Can you even dual a pally to mage or sorc? You could return to the Underdark for Joshua if you were willing to hire Imoen for a brief rescue mission.

Yes, Avoid Death also grants immuntiy to petrification, level drain and imprisonment - it's more comprehensive than the description suggests.AnonymousHero wrote...
Are you sure that's the case even when the vorpal doesn't offer a save? (All vanilla vorpal hitters offer a save, right?)
The balor's vorpal weapon doesn't allow a saving throw even in the vanilla game, but only the Watcher's Keep balors and Melissan's summons actually have this attack.

Keldorn did join my group. He was chunked by the 4 vampire night ambush.

Paladins are not allowed to dual. I have never returned to the Underdark before, but if I could yeah Imoen could rescue him. Will have to see if that's possible.

Ok, thanks for the information. I suppose the only real way to defeat a Baalor (for a monk) then is to keep one's distance... somehow. I can't recall if vanilla Baalor's have the Teleport without Error, but if they don't then that would of course make things considerably easier.

Are Mazzy and Anomen considered knightly enough to be members of your pally group? In my own game I have made Mazzy a paladin anyway.

Anomen, on the other hand, is not holy enough by our standards (he's no Keldorn). His cleric abilities would be too unbalancing (skeletal warriors, etc.). We are trying to see how far an all paladin group can get in a no-reload. So no Mazzy or Anomen this time.

Demogorgon wants to make a deal but I refuse and return to Odren. I tell him the truth and he rushes off to his doom while a ghostly apparition offers a new deal. I can't leave Odren to his fate, beginning to sound and think like Keldorn.
We attack from both sides. The defensive buffs deflect several attacks despite repeated dispels from Carsomyr. After only a few seconds Demogorgon is near death, while we are in good shape other than Minsc being held and poisoned.

Keldorn WW's, I GWW and Demogorgon is down and I forgot to see who killed it, not on highest kill so either a lower kill or the planetar then.

Minsc is poison-free and un-held not sure how, nothing in the game text.

Keldorn uses dispel magic twice to drop the mariliths, worth losing all our buffs for at this stage. I now realise I haven't installed Ascenscion or any tougher encounters. Another thing to do after this run.
Vemric, monk level 27. Saladrax. 825 kills 172 of these from BG1.
Minsc, ranger 22. Bodhi. 543 kills.
Keldorn, inquisitor 21. dragon (3 doors trial), 483 kills.
Jaheira, fighter 16 druid 14. 217 kills, marilith.
Nalia, mage 21 thief 4. 122 kills, Firkraag.
Imoen, mage 20 thief 7. 31 kills, Adamantite golem.

Wierdo and her crew did demogorgon with SCSII and improved fiends and ascension before entering the Underdark - made the drow city and beholders seem like big wuzzes in comparison.

Black dragon against three whirlwinds. We still have some of the 10 hits left.

We clear Suldanessar and enter the temple, killing a parasite on the tree of life before realising we cannot find the other parasites. I stomp around while Jaheira tells me to use the nuts we collected. Nuts? Nuts? I was in a hurry. We can go back and collect them though. Can't we?
I don't get this far in SOA very often, messed it up as the nuts are no longer available. What a way to end.

Grond0, are you saying you've never completed SOA. Any reason why you don't do a sighting run, and have you been through TOB at all?

Btw. I'm still contemplating a run. I haven't been able to dream up anything new though. I may just end up dusting off my Cleric/Illusionist Ao. If anyone has any interesting suggestions, feel free to PM me.

After thinking long and hard about it, why wouldn't paladins ask a good friend (Imoen in this case) to help them rescue a comrade? I couldn't see any role playing reason why they would turn down her help.
Therefore, the paladins recruited Imoen and headed back to the Underdark, which got Corey level 16 fighting re-spawns of the Kua-Toas (hey thought I got all you guys). She bought a freedom scroll, cast it, and then I clicked a "nothing" quickslot (spot where the freedom scroll was) and it interrupted Imoen's casting. Oops. Another 810 gold later, she cast it again, and then Joshua was returned to us! Thank you Imoen. We returned to the Copper Coronet and let her go, thanking her again for her help.
Next up was the Guarded Compound in the Temple District area. For the battle with the summons, we had summons of our own plus PfE and remove fear, our summons couldn't survive but the paladins did, no problem. We probably could have just charged the group upstairs but after PfE on everyone we moved upstairs, fired a fireball (via book of infinite spells) and went downstairs. Three enemies came down and pretty easily dispatched.
We came upstairs with true seeing running and defeated the last 3 enemies easily. We found a welcome piece of news in the loot - a charm protection helmet! This went to Joshua, so he can finally use something better as a weapon than the drinker, like Flail of Ages or the Daystar when we deal with Bodhi.
We went to Ribald's and got the Helm of Briliance. The helm will be a key piece of our strategy when we deal with Firkraag. Whoever tanks Firkraag must have maximum fire resistance via equipment only so that when we remove his stoneskins/protection from magic weapons we aren't removing their fire resistance and getting them killed. The rest of the party will use potions/scrolls for their fire resistance and hopefully stay away from Corey's dispel magics...
But next up we encountered Valygar -- from a role-playing point of view, paladins would NOT kill him unprovoked (we never did talk to the mage at the government biulding). We let him join temporarily and helped him with his quest. Thanks to our levels and incredible saves, this was pretty much a non-event. The entire place, I just used PfE, remove fear, and if needed true seeing and dispel magic. No summons, no tricky tactics, just attack. Corey got low health in the fire room, but Hanna's RoR heal came in time. Golems taken down by firetooth dagger, and firetooth crossbow. As an experiment tried to kill a golem with the silver sword, but they always made their save vs. death, so maybe I won't use this weapon in Suldanessar after all. I did something different with Valygar this time -- armed with the Celestial Fury, I changed his script to "aggressive thief". This worked great, he was never initially targeted, and helped to kill the enemies quickly. We had to kill a demon to return home, and all the demon could do before dieing was to silence Valygar - hah! In any case we got back to the slums, the quest being a complete success.
What to do, what to do...doesn't look like the party will get any HLAs in SoA...should be alright though. I COULD go back to Underdark and send Joshua against the Beholders...this is all fine and dandy but he could get imprisoned again. If I had SoB I could send 2 characters in, they would kill them fast enough probably no imprisons -- but I don't. So pass this time. Guess we can clear the 3 new areas that opened up from our return from the Underdark...

Corey and friends explored new areas available to them. Number of level-draining enemies here, but thanks to Joshua being immune and Corey also immune since he was using the improved mace of disruption, these areas went smoothly. In the North Forest we encountered a powerful party, a mage who had time stop. Before engaging Corey gulped a magic protection potion which put his MR to 60% - thought that should be enough to protect him from anything serious. Well the party does defeat these enemies, but Corey gets mazed! Good thiing this is not a solo run, this like the 5th time he's been mazed (3 from mages, 2 from traps). The party won without his help.
We still remember Paja being permanently being killed by Firkraag. It's time for some payback. We made some purchases at Ribald's, went to Firkraag's lair and did this prep:
Lily Gene can get to 70% fire resistance without buffs via her natural 20 and 50 via helm of brilliance. [EDIT: er my facts a bit off. First she only gets 10% fire resistance for being a cavalier. 2nd, she gets 15% from Gorgon plate and 50 for helm of brilliance for total of 75) She will tank Firkraag with hammer of thunderbolts. She will also use Kangaxx ring for haste. Corey will use gesen bow WITH +2 ammo (the lightning damge would probably be resisted with Firkraag's MR). Hanna will use firetooth crossbow WITH +2 ammo (again the fire portion would probably be resisted), and Joshua +2 bullets. We summoned a few weak summons and then did these buffs:
* Haste potion on everyone but Lily Gene
* Fire protection scroll on everyone but Lily Gene
* fire resistance potions on Hanna and Corey
* remove fear
The party then moved foward. Firkraag of course was still hostile from our last fight and opened with a firebreath attack - hah, lizard! We were ready for that and that did nothing (well killed some weak summons). Hanna charged, used kangaxx ring haste. She had to potion like 2-3 times, and RoR heal 1 time, then victory! Paja, you have been avenged.
I noticed Hanna gets 3 attacks with the Carsomyr, gave that to her for now. Bodhi better watch out...

How about trying a wild mage? I attempted a fighter dualled to wild mage recently. He didn't get that far, but I had the impression that this was a valid proposition for a successful solo run if you were prepared to be disciplined in how spells were used (which you obviously are capable of if you found it interesting).Alesia_BH wrote...

Good point. It's good to have him back as well. This is the FIRST time ever I have returned to the Underdark in any of my games.
