Turning off gore doesn't prevent permanent death anyway - the character won't be "chunked" at -9 hitpoints, but they'll still be impossible to resurrect. Only turning difficulty to easy stops characters from dying permanently.

I play with chunking too. It is good to feel scared sometimes.

Sometimes the damage can go too far - like in Khalid's case in the Irenicus Dungeon. Except, I was never quite sure ... whether Jaheira didn't want to resurrect him because she was looking for an convenient way out of the relationship!

One of the  Beholder's panic while *near death* and run to the group of blind priests - Cloud Kill and Fireball finished them altogether.

Jaheira used assembled rod on Great Feeder but was stuned so Mazzy backed her up. We eliminated Gaal and reported of our success. Band's reputation hit 20 so we made some shopping in full discount (Robe of Good Archmage for Nalia, Potion Case and Firetooth crossbow at Watcher's Keep, recharged Wand of Monster Summoning, some high level spells). Whilst resting at Nalia's Keep outdoors we were ambushed by Dermin and were forced to fight them...(*Sorry, guys, that wasn't our choice...*). Meanwhile our apprentices graduated which was quite heartwarming and soothed our hearts a little...

Nalia hit level 14 so we planning some Limited Wish Adventure now and Planar Prison be next.

to be continued...

Monskine the Druid had her protections dispelled
Monskine the Druid still has 50% fire resistance from the items she's wearing
Monskine the Druid has 92 health
Saladrex uses Dragon's Breath
Monskine portrait disappears instantly

Chunking is too fun to disable!
How else would you get druid BBQ? ^_^

Also : Congratulations on finishing SoA! Woooo! Let's party! I shall bring the meat!

Corey the level 22 Inquisitor and fellow 3 paladins continue their adventures...

So we arrive in Saradush. We found some local problems, elves that didn't think to ask the temple for shelter, some Gromnir's men picking on the locals, solved the case of Mateo who was framed, returned a spellbook for a mage merchant, and so on. Pretty easy stuff for the party. Melissan says we need to confront Gromnir.

We battle our way through the undead in a jail (easily), and then was time to battle Gromnir's men. We did have to use some heal potions, but the team felt like juggernauts, just laying waste. Corey and team battled to the main floor, but the enemies here just couldn't resist the team. The mage here lived while his PfMW was up, but got chunked as soon as it wore off.

Before doing Gromnir's level did maximum buffs, including hardiness and armor of faith. I realized with those two buffs Hanna had 70% melee resistance! We did bless, chant, PfE (of course), True Seeing and went upstairs. Corey dealt with Gromnir personally with his Carsomyr. Gromnir didn't even get a hit in, he was buffing himself with potions while Corey was laying into him with the Carsomyr. Battle was very clean, think Hanna had to gulp a heal potion and that was it. Gromnir's +4 flail went to Joshua, to replace Joshua's FoA. This increases Joshua's fire resistance. Hanna's halberd can kill any troll with its elemental damage.

Forgot to mention, the party battled the fire giants outside the town directly with their ranged weapons, and even though they killed many giants, it didn't seem to make a dent on the siege, so that was when they tried other things, such as seeing Gromnir.

In any case, Melissan tells us Yaga-Shura is invinicible, and tasks us with finding his invincibility and destroying it if possible. So we leave Saradush and head to North Forest. Battled many of Yaga-Shura's soldiers here, including some fire giants. It went pretty well except Lily Gene was a bit slow on healing Joshua with its RoR and Joshua got killed, though not chunked. The remaining paladins successfully cleared the area.

Next up was the Forest of Mir temple. Found a Gorion imposter and battled it out with his undead friends. [I had paused here and removed Carsomyr and equipped a shield and the improved mace of disruption so Corey could not be level drained] The battle went very well thanks to 2x sunrays (daystar, helm of brilliance). We encountered Nylee, who told us the secret of Yaga-Shura's invincibility. We have to get two hearts from his temple. That's where the party will head next.

Party Tanking Order/Status:
Joshua, Level 21 Undead Hunter, 123 HP, Icestar (+4 flail)
Hanna, Level 22 Undead Hunter, 149 HP, Dragon's Breath (+4 Halberd)
Corey, Level 22 Inquisitor, 120 HP, Carsomyr (+5 two-hand sword)
Lily Gene, Level 22 Cavalier, 132 HP, firetooth dagger (+3 throwing dagger)

Despite Corey having the higest CON (19), he has the lowest HP of the party...hmm...

Corey the level 24 Inquisitor and 3 paladin friends continue their adventure...

Corey's team had a deva help them clear the enemies outside Yaga's temple. Then we buffed to the max and went inside. Lots of fire giants here, did lots of healing, greater whirlwinds, but the final result was never in doubt. As matter of fact, clearing Yaga's temple was rather unremarkable. Having a tough team (e.g., can melee with the best of them, lots of HP, good saves etc.), we just withdrew anyone badly hurt, got them healed and back in action. And if partially hurt, then potion. And if lots of fire giants, whirlwind/greater whirlwind. Lily Gene has 110% fire resistance so we used her to open the chests in the center of the fire. I ALSO remembered to remove fear througout this area, which made things a bit smoother than usual. Forgot to remove fear against kithix though, so Joshua was out of action for that fight, though the rest of the team still took him down, albeit with lots of heals.

We return to the Forest of MIr and give Nylee the hearts. She does remove Yaga's invincibility, but then turns on us. We had to destory her and her minions but we were successful. Took a long time to take down those shambling mounds, but they had a tough time hitting us, so that wasn't much a problem.

We then headed to Yaga's siege camp. We fought almost buffless, remove fear, and summoned deva and a fire elemental. We chased Yaga, then he ran. When he came back, it was Corey vs. Yaga, head-to-head. Corey potioned a couple times - the party wasn't much help, as Yaga appeared inside a bulwark, so only Corey had access to him. However, the party took down so much trash mobs that everyone gained a level after Yaga was killed.

Next up Oasis, and Amethratkan (or however it's spelled). Gold is a LOT better usual (presumably because I'm not having to purchase arcane spells and mage equipment) - I have 209903 gold BEFORE Oasis, and you get a ton of gold there (I think it's the most labor intensive looting in all BG series, think it's taken 30 min. or more just to loot everything there).

Well done.

I'm looking forward to some gold in ToB. Wierdo's band is always looking for more as one of the mods I have installed considerably reduces the amount of cash you get for selling things.

Corey the level 25 Inquisitor and fellow 3 paladin friends continue their adventure...

Corey and friends dealt with the 2nd pocket plane challenge. Just some paladin buffs, a deva, and lots of HLAs used. We got ambushed by the Tethyrian army -- they would not listen to reason and we had to cut them down.

Next up was Sendai's enclave. Many battles here, we took some pain but in every case, we managed to heal everyone in time. As for Sendai herself, that battle raged a while. Our strategy was to kill the drow adds, kill Sendai clone, kill drow adds, etc. The group took LOTS of pain, and everyone got near death a few times, but Lily Gene or Corey came through with the RoR heals (when healing I kept fighting the AI. So ended up turning off AI during heals, then immediately turning it back on once target is fully healed). Corey's dispel magic was quite helpful against the mages/clerics of Sendai. The melee Sendai clones were brutally slaughtered. Finally, the real Sendai had to deal with us, and we defeated her.

Mr. Draconis will be next, wish me luck!

Corey the Inquisitor and fellow 3 paladin friends - FINAL Update

The party headed to Abazigal's lair. We met a powerful dragon named Draconis. We did our rather usual strategy of beating the bad guy, and draw back to heal and then go back in. Once I thought his defenses were suitably down we whirlwinded and Draconis went down.

We had to do some swimming once inside and defeat some miscellaneous enemies, but no problem at all. We obtained a scroll of geas reversal and gave to a dragon guarding Abazigal's lair. She brought down the wards, then we entered. Lot of HLAs used here, but strategy similar to Draconis - withdraw when badly hurt, use RoR heal and get back in, or potion heal if partially hurt. Abazigal fell to our might.

Next up was the 3rd challenge. This consisted of Corey running away from the slayer while everyone else laid into the Slayer. Eventually, the Slayer was slain.

Then we headed to Amthrakan (misspelled I know...). Balthasar's minions did not stop us. We did NOT take Elminister's advice (get Saemon's help) and just picked up a key from one of the dead monks and walked right in.  We did a few buffs, in particular hardiness and armor of faith. We walked in but with our haste we apparently didn't trigger Balthazar appearing. He eventually showed up once we walked DOWN the stairs...The battle with Balthazar for this party was a joke - everyone turned on greater whirlwind and unpaused and everyone was dead including Balthazar.

Next up was Ravager. I was feeling rather nervous about this one - mainly because I have to turn off the AI for this fight. Several close calls, including Corey at a sliver of life and Ravager at near death. Fortunately the RoR heal kicked in time and Ravager fell.

I recharged my Rod of Resurrections and triggered the Throne of Bhaal fight. 1st round was pretty easy.. Next up was the 1st pool battle - very easy for this team, in fact.

The second battle with Melissan, however went very wrong though. First problem was our deva got stuck on the pool platform - we needed her help to off-tank. In my install, I can only have 1 celestial summon in area ata time. Second problem was the slayer shadows were trashing everyone, I spent at least 1/2 the battle just trying to heal. The other problem was Lily Gene was unconcious and unable to help. Corey and Hanna were getting sniped from behind by slayer shadows and weren't getting Melissan dead, and instead Corey died.

RIP Corey (wait, that's me..hmm)

Quick notes about my paladin run:

1) Was surprised how I was able to recover after losing everyone's equipment
2) First time re-visiting the Underdark after previously having left it
3) More bodies would have definitely helped against Melissan
4) An all paladin group is strong against most enemies; Corey only had a few close calls the entire run, even though most of the time he was in melee in BG 2/ToB.
5) Inquisitor dispel a bit of a draw-back in Melissan fight, as that would get rid of our buffs too -- breach would be much more party friendly, buff-wise.

Corey, I am very sorry for your loss. You were almost there...

I graduated to this thread from BGI no reload challenge and I am entering the SoA part with Lokuryn, chaotic neutral elven thief (assassin kit).
Lokuryn survived the perils of BGI playing solo on Insane difficulty. Since I consider SoA+ToB much more difficult than BGI and since I have never finished it in no reload challenge, I will play on Core rules this time, and with few party members.
Stats after importing:
STR19; DEX20; CON16; INT9; WIS6; CHA9
Level 10, 57HP
Proficiencies: Long sword *; Quarter Staff *; Short Bow *; Single Weapon Style *
Bhaal powers: 2xLMD, 1xSP, 1xH, 2xVT
I have vanilla SoA+ToB with the latest patch installed.

Image IPB

After being released from prison cell, Lokuryn sent Imoen away. He cleared Irenicus prison from monsters and assassins.

After clearing the whole dungeon, Lokuryn freed Minsc and Jaheira. With Jaheira in the party, Lokuryn escaped from the prison to the Waukeen’s Promenade.

Lokuryn: L11 Assassin 59HP
Jaheira: L8/11 Fighter/Druid 80HP

@Vaclavc: Thanks for your consolation. Good luck in your run, with any luck maybe YOU will take down Melissan! I agree BG 2 is harder, in the sense there are more ways to die. But on the other hand, there's lot more defensive equipment in BG 2 (cloak of mirroring, Shield of Balduran, etc.) so if you know what to expect you can still get far. In BG 1, especially in the first few levels a single critical from a bear or archer could end your run. And there's only a few items for non-fighters to help with that (belt of piercing, boots of avoidance).

I really want to use Valygar and Mazzy at some point and find myself taking Nalia, Jaheira and Vicionia along all the time.

Mazzy is a beast, and will serve you well. She may lack unique traits (Like Edwin's Amulet, Vici's MR or Minsc bloody effin Enrage) but a solid fighter - with decent dialogues - nonetheless.

@jaxsbudgie

I totally agree with Stworka - Mazzy is perfect! Meself usually invest in axes for her (Azuredge, Axe of the Unyielding and that throwing axe from Amkethran). She also is excellent with slings (even more than with bows due to her race bonus and possibility to use decent shield). Valygar as her squire (he is a gentlemen in no less) is nice too. Foebane (with Belm or Kundane offhand) under wirlwind or improved haste - ouch! In general, this is my usual party setup - I love'em all. The only changes are Nalia or Valygar for Imoen in Spellhold. It's always a very tough decision (if only I can have 7 char party (sigh..)).

Mendris, LE male halfling bounty hunter with final moments of BG.

I get through the maze in one invisible run, dump some stash then grab the golden pantaloons and Koveras' ring. Then I return to Belt and he checks I'm ready to accept his final job.

I'm well prepared.

Unfortunately I get ambushed by Mae'Var.

How? I sleep in the shadows with snares all around.

I vaguely remember being tortured by someone called Irenicus, until Imoen frees me. She leaves with two friends, Minsc and Jaheira. I've lost all my gear, so grab what I can and prepare to leave myself.

I lose count of the snares used to escape, and of the loot I'm forced to leave behind. Eventually I escape, only for Imoen to appear and attack Irenicus. They are both arrested and I decide to track them down; whether this is to rescue Imoen or pay back Irenicus I cannot say.

Man I'm looking forward to reading your adventures. I'm a big assassin fan so good luck to you. I had 2 questions for you: Where did you get your character portrait? I fully concur that Mazzy rocks, but prefer to mod her into a paladin and play her that way. Mazzy is a perfect pally, and looks great wielding Carosymr.

I should play her without modding I guess, but I've always found the D&D race / class restrictions a little bit, well, racist. I get a halfling pally with ** in two handed swords and two handed weapons, but miss out on the halfling fighter with ***** in shortswords and *** in dual wielding. With improved haste and str bonuses the carnage would be inspiring ....

Or how about playing her as a berserker?
