Finishing up in Athkatla for now:
Dealt with Tirdir's kidnappers:

Went after the Spider's Bane in the Temple District sewers, where we ran into another band of adventurers. We charged them with twenty hasted skeletons - which the enemy cleric immediately took control of. Oh well. Viconia turned some of them back, but not before they'd swarmed Korgan, allowing the enemy to focus on him, which was the opposite of what I had planned. At least hador managed to cast
Chaos, Emotion, and then another Chaos, which bought us time.
We killed one of the swarves, which got Jaheira a level (9 Druid). However, I decided to wait until the fight was over before leveling her, which was a mistake: Gaius, the enemy mage, had saved against all of Hador's disablers, and killed her with a Death Spell. If only I'd leveled her, she'd have had the necessary 9 HD to be immune. To add insult to injury, Gaius' next move was to saly Korgan as well, this time with a Finger of Death.
With only Hador and Viconia alive (again), we found ourselves needing to retreat, with Viconia summoning more and more cannon fodder to cover our flight. Hador, meanwhile, bombarded Gaius with the Wand of Cloudkill.

He managed to get a couple of spells off at Viccy, but her magic resistance saved her again. Sadly for Gaius, he had no such defense against Cloudkill, which proved to be his end.
By now, Challchobhair had joined Tarnor the Hatchetman at killing our gnolls and goblins. The two of them were going through them like a knife through butter, but in the end, they were only men, and the dwarf fell, pierced by too many wounds for him to cope with.
As he drew his final breath, the cloeric finally rejoined the battle, but he made the same mistake as his Bridge District colleague and summoned skeletons. The result was a rather one-sided battle.

As we were looting, I noticed Gaius had dropped his spellbook as he died, which contained the Death Spell. This was a fortunate turn of events: Hador just hit level 12 after the battle, and Death Spell kills every type of troll - including the "spirit" variety. It will be most useful in the De'Arnise Keep.
After a quick trip to the temple, we returned for the sword, and returned it to the half-drow druid. Then we went to Cromwell's forge, where Kitthix was immediately updated to his IU version, which I look forward to using. I've always liked Kitthix from a RP perspective, but he/she/it has never really been worth summoning even in the early game - I've never used Improved Kitthix before, but I get the impression that it's a different story entirely.
