Very simple. Other games make the computer louder than when it is just browsing the internet or whatever, but dragon age makes it EXCEPTIONALLY louder. This is the same whether the graphics are on very high (game runs just fine) or as low as possible.
Games I have played on this computer without anywhere near as loud whirring:
Sims 3
blur
GTA4
The Last Remnant
Just Cause 2
Half Life 2
Portal
TF2
Black
and White 2
RCT3
GTA San Andreas
Silent Hill 3
Silent Hill 4
RE4
Oblivion
Fallout
3
Computer Specs:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
AMD Phenom II X3 720 Processor (3 CPUs), ~2.8GHz
4096MB RAM
640 GB
ATI Radeon HD 4850/4870HD (I honestly cannot remember if it's 4850 or 4870)
Computer is extra loud when playing Dragon Age compared to other games.

I would say the cause is the extremly high CPU usage of Dragon Age. On a Dual Core it is 100% for every core so for you Triple Core it should be almost the same. Through that your CPU fan spins faster.

Is there any particular reason for that? Like, is it necessary? Some of the games I listed seem like they'd need a hell of alot more CPU power than this.
The only reason I stopped playing this game is because the whirring was driving me crazy.

Have the same problem. My whole system seems to heat up, which then pumps my fans to what seems like maximum speed. This causes the noise. I can see the heat build up by watching a temperature gauge on my cabinet. It jumps from a normal temperature of approx. 50 C (122 F) to over 60 C (140 F).
It seems to accelerate in dialogue mode, but it is present at some level during the whole game. The noise lowers significantly during loading screens.
I'd like to add that I don't have any similar problems with any other games or applications. These include Bioshock, Batman Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1 & 2 and World of Warcraft. All of these games also tax the computer significantly, but they don't heat it up like DA Awakening does. Also, I did not have this problem prior to installing Awakening.
Dragon Age Awakening - DLC in the EU-region.
Intel i7 CPU 920 @2.66 GHz
Ram: 6 GB
OS Win 64 SP 2
Nvidia Geforce GTX 275, driver 257.21 (newest)
I don't overclock any part of my system.

There are fans out there that are quieter than others. The same with CPU Fan/Heatsink combos. If the fan noise actually bothers you that much, try using some headphones.

CrustyCat, I think you missed the point about my temperature jumping 10 degrees celsius - which doesn't happen for me in any other game, nor happened before I installed Awakening.
Shivar, can you detect the same behaviour? That is, temperature rising rapidly when running DA?

No. I don't get anything more than a 5 degree increase.

Sorry, I was actually responding to the OP about his "whirring" noise. The 10 degree temperature rise is probably due to the fact that DA tends to use 100% of processor capability, or close to it. Have you tried replacing the thermal compound on your cpu heatsink? Arctic silver works pretty good. I would manually adjust the fan speed up higher if you haven't already done so. I believe so called "auto" fan control lets components get too hot sometimes.

I have same issue, only its only on dialogs. I can fight half a hundred enemies and throw the biggest and most complex graphic spells, and my alienware runs nice and quiet.
Enter a dialog and stay there for 4-5min (Not even awnsering) and my computer sounds like its ready to take off and fly away!! . - this has to got to do with bad programming on biowares behalf
