Megan goes Bassilisk Hunting
Aside from the traditional hunting methods with the hunting ghoul Korax, there was a bandit party in Megan's wake. This party killed Korax, at least the one shooting arrows did, and Megan was left to wonder if she could take this party on all by herself. First she confronted the one with arrows in a shoot out. She used up five healing potions as well as her bhaalspawn ability to match arrows with this enemy who left the comforts of his own party to deal with her. He did plenty more damage compared to Megan but he went down all the same. The next enemies were thankfully not shooting arrows and were in quite the correct position, for Megan.
They had decided to camp out near one of the large skeletal corpses, possibly of draconic nature. Whatever the case, it cast a shadow over the ground, and Megan used this area to stealth and shoot. Yep, the ranger elf found a spot where she could attack with an arrow and immediately stealth in response. Two of the enemy were spellcasters and tried to cast spells. Unfortunately for them, Megan's shooting(from short bow) was quicker then them casting. And sometimes she'd take advantage when their auras were not cleansed. She used this method to take down one of the casters. The melee fighter was simply shot down. The last one named Peter lost all his spells due to Megan stealthing and then ran a mad charge against her. This was frightening actually, a crazed cleric running after her. Eventually Peter went down and Megan took their special items and left the area.
Megan in the Nashkel Mines
Megan quickly completed various quests and then headed down to the mines. Now she is on the second level and doing pretty much nothing but preparing for the future battles ahead.

The party was
Lilith L1
Imoen L2
Viconia L2
Kagain L1
Shar-Teel L2
The object was to gain enough levels to risk taking on the gnoll stronghold in Edwin's interests. Melicamp died. The xvart village (I counted 33 dropped short swords) managed to get a grand of 3 hits vs. my two fighters, who blocked the southern valley entrance. My ranged attackers made slow but steady work of Ursa, who couldn't find a way through the hordes of her little friends.
We went for Greywolf for the experience and the sword for Shar-Teel. It was almost the death of Lilith. We lined up with our fighters facing east, defending the weaklings in the little alley to the west of Prism. Kagain spoke to Prism. Greywolf casually gulped a potion of freedom (immediately after Viconia had begun casting her hold-person spell), and casually walked right past Shar-Teel, took one swipe at Viconia, hit and killed her for 15 hp. The rest of the party freaked out. We scattered everywhere. Lilith resigned herself to throwing darts and Imoen her arrows until somehow we might take down all his massive hp. Greywolf doggedly pursued Lilith, who had had no time to cast shield, and was still at 6 hp. Because pathfinding resets itself when you click a new destination, Greywolf was slowly catching up to Lilith. The two fighters had to step in to protect her. Kagain gulped a potion of strength, but was quickly down to 20% hp after inflicting zero damage. At this point Lilith needed to run away, but she didn't know whether she could still fight Greywolf later. She did the only sensible thing that anyone had done all day, and looked in her backpack. She'd been accumulating all the scrolls that dead enemies had left behind. Lo and behold, there was a scroll of blindness! Cast it, Greywolf failed his save, and the battle was all but over. Viconia was resurrected shortly afterwards.
Now we have just bought the necklace of missiles and recruited Edwin. Next stop is the southwest wilderness, then the gauntlets of dexterity for Kagain, and then Edwin permanently with the party.
I'm having second thoughts about bringing in Coran. He'd make a great, perhaps crucial addition to the party, especially when we fight spellcasters, but Imoen with the banterpack is such fun.
The party now:
Lilith - L3
Imoen - L3
Shar-Teel - L3
Viconia - L3
Kagain - L2
Edwin - L2
Got several frustratingly low hp rolls which might delay my expedition into the Naskel mines. Kagain rolled a 1 from a d10.

Entangle did for Greywolf, along with ranged weapons, and we took his Halberd +1. Thinking about it now, though, I think I forgot the emeralds from Prism... duh!
We then proceeded down the mines. The traps on the third level were a nuisance - Erthallin simply stormed them, but I forgot the last one was a magic missile trap. He actually took a worrying about of damage - I should have gone through them one by one, healing as I went. As it was everything was fine, and the others spent a couple of spells to fix him up.
Mulahey fell prey easily to Miscast Magic. Viconia's skeletons and an Entangle kept his minions at bay whilst we killed him, and then we mopped them up afterwards. We suffered some injuries here because I couldn't be bothered to use any more spells on them.
I don't plan on using Xan, but I picked him up and will drop him in Beregost. With Ch 3 starting, though, I want to get my reputation up before resting to get Cure Light Wounds from the next dream (my mods replace the Larloch's, but I think I put Burning Hands there or something stupid instead). Nashkel is going to be interesting, because all of the guards want to kill me. I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with Nimbul, because a three-way fight could get kinda hairy.

However, I decided not to kill any more "inncoents" without leading them over the bridge first, so as not to send yet more people hostile. This made Nimbul more of a nuisance, since Imoen (with her higher 3 AC) had to flee the guards. Viconia's Command spell gave us a bit of thinking time, and we were able to Hold him. After we finished him off, we headed north, and were going to take out one of the guards, but a critical hit dropped Xan to 1hp and I fled.
I took the ore to Taerom and droppped Xan off in Beregost. Then I quickly dispatched Tranzig (who was easy again, despite my mini-mod - he doesn't seem to handle being having guys close to him, as he attacks instead of using Lightning Bolt. He did try to cast more spells afterwards, but skeletons and darts made short work of him).
Resting gave me Cure Light Wounds, and I headed up for a rekkie on the Bandit Camp. On the way we were accosted by the amazonian assassins. Viconia was poisoned, and everyone had just cast spells so couldn't cure her fast enough. Luckily, I had an anditode equipped in one of her slots, which she dranks, then Erthallin healed her with his fast Bhaalspawn ability. Fortunately, she had still managed to cast Animate Dead, which kept the two ranged attackers busy. Lightning Bolt was used to great effect here, with Imoen striking the poison-darts-wielder dead and Erthallin hitting both the clerics, IIRC.
Molkar and his gang followed soom after. The two meleers were Entangled, but Erthallin was hit by Horror. Imoen countered this with Remove Fear, but their Cleric Held him. Oddly, he started the battle by running away, but then came back again to shower us with spells. I think this is a bug in the code I put in to try and spread them out, to compensate for the fact that the BG1 engine means you have to spawn them on top of the party (it's an SCS mod designed for TuTu). Anyway, it probably actually made things harder, but skeletons were again used, along with copious amounts of Entangle and Hold Person, and the battle was shortly won.
Next stop, the bandit camp. I am somewhat cautious, since a simple slip-up ended my previous pure Druid run (which has since reached BG with only two reloads). However, if I remember to pre-buff with Remove Fear and whatnot I should be OK.

Ouch. If these are the ones I think they are (the Coast Way ones?) they're pretty tough. According to the stuff on the CoM website, they're only meant to pop up in Ch 2, but (in my install at least) they're there from the start, which makes them extra tough. I had an exhilirating - though terrifying - experience with a solo L1 character bumping into a mage with Shadow Door...Grond0 wrote...
She was working her way through the Dark Horizons groups of assassins and attacked the group in the bandit caravan area thinking that the scroll of magic protection would give her appropriate protection. However, backstabs from the 2 thief types took her quite low on hits and even though she drank a potion, all 3 of the attackers got lucky with hits in the next round forcing her to try and run - but Malious was under haste and chopped her down from behind before she could take another potion.

Bright lights, big city;
Just arrived at Baldur’s Gate to find that strange old wizard waiting for me with more cryptic tails of Gorion. I was surprised to see that only a ten day has pasted, seems like a month has pasted since I escaped from the boredom of Candle keep… well my life is exciting now, guess I should be careful what I wish for!
p.s.
Imoen is still very upset with me over the mine flooding incident but I’m confident that I can worm myself back into her heart.

I've been playing a new character for a while. I waited till now to submit him, my thieves usually die early, but I am playing this one smart (I think), I am VERY choosy on what battles he does. Even at level 5 his melee still stinks. The dagger of venom is my next big purchase, I need the Thac0 and the poison against the mages.
Results vs. the early 3 assassins:
Tarnesh - a single backstab sent him to oblivion. Only got 10% experience for that since he was blue circle but still that's a heck lot better than dying...
Karlat - Saved him till level 4 - Trint backstabbed, ran outside (Karlat can't follow in my install), Trint would stealth, then go back in and backstab and repeat till he was dead. I delayed fighting him however until I had enough HP to survive a critical, in case he hit me while I was running outside.
Neira - her hold person would be devastating to a thief, so went in and out the door several times to get rid of her hold persons, then went in and out backstabbing each time till she was dead.
Perdue's sword - I missed my opening backstab and in melee vs. 3 gnolls had to gulp like 5 heal potions - what a waste!
Landarn's spider-filled home - Trint would attack run outside, stealth, go inside, attack, go outside, etc. and only after the spiders were thinned some did he try a backstab. Even doing this he still got poisoned couple of times. Fortunately Lendarn (Landarin? forget her name) gave 6 antidotes to Trint so he was covered. Got level 4 from the mess as well.
I was very close to being able to get the shadow armor. (about 350 gold short). So I went to the Nashkel Mines (surface), got the wand of frost, went to high hedge, and then promptly sold it, forgetting to identify it first and only got 1 GP! Doh1 Thalantyr will let me have it back for 19,000 gold - thanks Thal! Fortunately reporting my success to Lendarn was enough gold to get him his armor, such as it is.
Areas cleared:
* The road areas between Candlekeep and Nashkel. I used a haste potion vs. the belt fetish ogre - the belt of piercing pretty important to Trint to survive the archer bandit ambushes (which he did get in a couple of those, ran for his life).
* Nashkel Mines (surface) - I did NOT fight Greywolf though. Don't have enough HP yet don't think, also to trigger the fight I have to talk to Prism which makes me visible. Realistically don't think I can even attempt this fight unless I use a haste potion.
* Krumm and Carbos - I figured it was going to be tough - especially when my opening backstab misses! I ran for my life slinging, running, etc. It was enough to get Carbos down, but Krumm still chasing me and ran out of heal potions. I ran to the edge of the map and he got a critical, taking down 24 of my 26 HP. I exercised the better part of valor, as Khalid would say and ran to Nashkel and healed up. I returned and fnished him with a backstab. Krumm's belt will be very important when I have to deal with ogres of any kind. The rest of the area was cleared without much incident, except I did not mess with the large group of gnolls in the top area.
* Gnoll fortress - used a necklace of missiles charge on the two half-ogres guarding the bridge. Still had to melee one down. I fought my way to the CHA tome. I got fatigued and kept getting interrupted while trying to rest (even when resting stealthed). Nevertheless eventually succeeded. I then proceeded to go into the CHA tome cave and backstab, got out, stealth, go in, backstab etc. until all the xvarts will dead. I looted everything, which put me full inventory. I stealthed and booked it back to Nashkel. I got an Ogre Mage ambush - I stealthed and avoided him entirely.

Took out the Gnoll Stronghold. Well, not before we were waylaid by 2 winter wolves and Viconia was 1-hit killed, again, and had to be resurrected first. Mercilessly murdered Dynaheir, and Minsc after her. On the way back was waylaid by two bears, one down, but the mountain bear killed Shar-Teel. Her stuff was hastily gathered by Kagain before the party fled the encounter. Since Lilith's charisma is only 9, +1 charisma is quite useless, so the party has decided to sell the Tome of Leadership for 2500 gp.
Back in Naskel, having destroyed Neira the assassin. Tried to set up an ambush outside involving the Naskel guards, and have her chase me out as expected in the BG Tutu engine. Instead she stayed inside, and Kagain resorted to the unfortunate but necessary tactic of dodging in, waiting for her to cast one of her three hold person spells, and running out again. For Lilith's third L1 spellpick she took Identify, for ease of use rather than power, since Identify is in Edwin's opposition school.
Lilith - L3
Imoen - L4
Shar-Teel - L3
Viconia - L3
Kagain - L3
Edwin - L2

BG/TotSC/patch, single player mode (less lag, no hangs but unpaused inventory).
Vorak, LG human male paladin. Life has been good to him (roll of 93).

Gorion is dead and Imoen has insisted on travelling with me. She grabs some potions and studded leather from Montaron, a couple of scrolls from Xzar, a diamond from a tree, two rings from rocks and even some ankheg armour in a field.
She scowls as I talk to Noober, laughs as I rescue captain Brage and cries as I get mauled by Caldo. After we rest she suggests we start with easy targets and work our way towards more challenging foes. We start with hobgoblins gathered around the Friendly Arm Inn, progress to a pair of note-wielding ogrillions and then to diseased gibberlings, xvarts and a belted ogre.
We rescue Melicamp (success) then find Caldo and Krumm aren't so tough second time around. Gnarl and Hairtooth are next, then we ask Thalantyr to identify a tome of leadership.
Karlat fails to collect a bounty as I return a shortsword to Perdue. I require all my abilities, four blue potions and two weapons (broken hammer) to hold Greywolf at bay, only for Imoen to kill him. Prism dies peacefully and our reputation is heroic (20).

You could give it to Imoen, and use her as the party face. Sucks if she gets chunked, but a lump sum of gold is only so useful in the long run (when you kill Bassilus you get 5k, though admittedly at the start it can help a lot).Belloc wrote...

Good luck corey_russell... Solo thief is a tuft ask, even with those stats. Personally I'd add a multi (fighter, cleric or mage)... Why the shield, wouldn't single weapon style give you better bang for your buck?

Sorry forgot to metion my setup. It's as follows:
Vanilla BG 1
Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion
Official TotSC patch
Core Rules
"gore" on
So as you can see, I don't have styles because I'm not using the BG 2 engine. Also I already tried a multi class thief recently and he was slaughtered. So time for pure thief to do what they can.

We swept through the bandit camp with the vengeance of the dead before us (i.e .skeletons). My intention was to use these to soak up enemy arrows and to force bandits to fight in melee - however, the hobgoblins killed most of them. I thus had a bit of a risky moment near the main tent with about four or so bandits and Taugosz the hammer guy. I decided not to pull any punches and rest right before the tent - I wasn't going to be able to use Call Lightning inside anyway. Command had bought us enough time to Entangle Taugosz, but I unleashed another Animate Dead and started hurling lightning bolts at them.
After we rested, we buffed up with Barkskin (for Imoen's AC and the save bonuses), Remove Fear (it was worth it), Chant, Strength of One and Defensive Harmony. Viconia's magic resistance made a bit of a nuisance of itself here, though.
Unfortunately, the tent didn't go so well. The mage saved vs Miscast Magic, and though we Entangled the two warriors, the leader has a bow. I summoned up some skeletons to keep him and the hobgoblin busy (the hobgoblin causes poison, I think), but he cut through them pretty quickly. Command bought us some brief interludes, but I couldn't Hold him. Meanwhile, I'd cast another Miscast Magic successfully, and sent Erthallin down with a Flame Blade to take the mage out - possibly a bad choice in hindsight, when he could have focussed on, say, the hobgoblin, so the skelies would last longer.
Long story short, Imoen started taking damage so I sent her out to heal. Despite Erthallin's impressive 9 THAC0 (SoO = 18/75 Str, Small swords ***, bonus from Flame Blade) he seemed completely unable to hit the mage. Then Raemon started shooting Viconia. Her base AC is better than Imoen's, but she doesn't have the Boots of Avoidance and her health is a lot worse. As such two hits nearly killed her, and she fled. That left Erthallin alone. Now, he has a good -4 AC from the Taugosz's Full Plate and Large Shield +1 and the Girdle of Piercing. He was also on full (high 40s) health. I was pretty sure he could survive a couple more rounds in there, but if he dies it's game over so I fled.
The second time around, things actually went much the same way. The difference this time was that they were all weakened, and we hit Raemon with a Hold (after a couple of attempts). Erthallin killed Venkt (the mage) and moved onto the hobgoblin, whilst the others were taken down with ranged weapons. Skellies helped a lot. As a result, Erthallin gained a level and is now L3->7.
The only other scary moment was when Imoen opened the chest. Despite her new boots, she took a lot of damage, and the bouncing lightning bolt progressed along the tent making her have to flee. It nearly reached Erthallin and Viconia before it petered out. Phew!
Next up, Chapter 4! The spiders in Cloakwood are going to be tough, even with triple Slow Poisons, so I might do some adventuring about first. We're already quite high-level, though, so I can't imagine it'll make things any easier. I might have to take on a Thief to deal with the traps, too (wanted to play with a Druid-esq party, but one Thief or Thief->Mage - Safana? - might be very useful for support at various points).

Bandit time; Arghain and Neville. Teyngan (Jemby scares me but Imoen scares her back then kills her and keeps the others occupied until Vorak recovers) then some half ogres for Bjornin.
After that I deal with worgs for Ardrouine then use PfE to ignore the charms of a sirine. A second sirine gets the same treatment, and we attempt to do the same to Sil and two more sirines. Confusion ignores PfE and I lose control. Imoen immediately gets two poison arrows and yes I have the green and blue potions locked away, so she can do nothing except die.
So I am alone with three hostile sirines. I stumble away, out of their sight, fortunately not in the direction of carrion crawlers. I recover, cast my final PfE and return. I get confused almost immediately. This time they chase me into the sea, where I kill Sil and then the other two (enough xp to level up).

800gp is required to get Imoen breathing again, after which we head to the cave of Black Alaric. I face a flesh golem while Imoen backstabs it but we have to retreat and rest. We swap girdles, and this time Imoen adds two backstabs with great success. We try to repeat against a second golem only for a third one to join in. After retreating and resting again we return, and my first blow is decisive (no healing after rest in vanilla) so we track down the third golem. Imoen kills it with her second backstab and we have a pile of treasure to loot. Thalantyr reads a tome of bodily health to me (unfortunately I mis-click and gulp my only green potion first).

Imoen disrupts Mulahey with a backstab and he is dead before she can add a second hit. We both miss Nimbul and his mirror images allow him to scare me. I get two sets of magic missiles as I wander off, then Imoen distracts him to get a third. I recover and get a fourth, heal and get a fifth, heal again and get a sixth just before I can glug a blue potion.
Nimbul crosses another name off his list and stalks off.

I also seem to be suffering from the pause-game-interrupts-enemy-casters bug. It only seems to pop up sometimes, normally against Clerics, but because my normal response when I see someone casting is to pause, I think I may be making the game easier for myself by accident. A lot of the time I would have been attacking them and hopefully interrupting them anyway, but I'm pretty sure that sometimes this wasn't the case. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I tried to propose a peaceful solution to Senayid, but he wasn't having any of it. He cast Call Lightning and continued to attack us even after he was dead. I almost died, and had to flee the area.
The spider area started OK, but I got complacant fighting the ettercaps. In the end I won, despite poison and web, but Imoen didn't make it. Whilst sorting my inventory, however, a Phase Spider popped up unannounced. Erthallin Entangled it but it Phased to him and got a hit off before he dodged. He failed to cast Slow Poison, and had used up his Elixir of Health previously.
Game over.
