Meanwhile, Aon and co:
- Killed Bjorn's Half-Ogres (though haven't told him yet)
- Got ambushed by Xvarts and Ghasts - the one Sleep and two Blindnesses we had were enough to blind the Ghast (mmm 650XP) and take out most of the Xvarts, though a lot of running was involved.
- Headed back to Nashkel to rest up.
All are now L2 as well, giving Praesa a decent 11 hp and another space to cast Sleep.

Small update. Some things accomplished the "big" event also happened, described below.
1) Bassilus and his army defeated. Was a pitched battle with his skeleton army battling our skeleton army. Ajantis was protected by greenstone amulet, though I don't think he ever got targeted. It was too much for Bassilus and he and his minions were defeated. Hammer went to Branwen
2) While in sirine country Imoen leveled to 6 - it's time! I immediately dualed her to level 1 mage. With any luck, she can be level 7 before entering the Cloakwood mines. If not, well will have to recruit a thief, probably Coran or Safana. I think it's possible, mainly due to the 4 man party. Lots of high experience areas still left to explore. Also in Sirine country Imoen leveled to 2 mage. She didn't have any mage equipment so she had to take Branwen's sling and Branwen had to get into thick of things with her hammer.
3) Back in Beregost, got magical ranged ammo for the casters. Got Branwen a basic sling. A +1 dagger for Imoen, though she's not proficient (it's just so she doesn't take a penalty when in melee). Also replenished our potion supply was drained quite a bit in Sirine country.
Plan is to keep exploring the wilderness areas until there are none left or Imoen makes to level 7, whichever comes first.

I think the intent of the Phase Spider AI from SCS was bang on, because hard Phase Spiders really should be harder to escape and so forth. However I just don't like them suddenly converging on you from all over the map. I think they will still teleport to invisible people, which I'm not sure they should (perhaps they can see you on the ethereal plane or whever they are?) but to fix that would require a fairly large rework of the script's logic I think.
Speaking of spiders, Aon and his posse have been hired to deal with some - see below.
We rescued Brage (I think killing him is actually worth more XP overall, but I'd feel bad about that), but then couldn't really think of any decent XP areas which would be safe to visit right now. At this point I'd just head to the mines, but the kobolds' bows pose more of a threat than most things for my party of mages.
I decided it was time to up the stakes and go after bigger game (not smart in a no-reload I know). We headed back to Brage's area with the intention of driving south towards the Gnoll Stronghold, but instead decided to tackle Laryssa. To be safe, I had Aon circle around from the top whilst the others engaged from below. Xyla interrupted Laryssa's first spell with a Larloch's or something, but Ilsani Blinded her at about the same time anyway. Then I had Aon move in and we all finished her off.
We returned to Bjornin in Beregost, who gave us his shield. I didn't tell him we couldn't use it and quietly sold it.
Buoyed up by our successes, we also took on Tarnesh. I'd acquired a Shield scroll so my tactic was to have Praesa run up with that and Chill Touch up to engage Tarnesh in melee whilst Xyla would use LMD and MM to interrupt his spells. To be extra safe, I again sent the girls in alone and had Aon wait off to the right so that if it did go sour, at least any casualties wouldn't be anything a 200gp visit to the temple wouldn't cure (MMs can do a lot of damage, but never chunk).
As I'd hoped, a well-timed Magic Missile prevented Mirror Image from coming up, and Praesa's Shield-tanking wasn't necessary. After taking a shot with her sling, Ilsani fired off a Blindness which stuck, and that was it for Tarnesh.
The team have a bit more XP and a few more known spells now. I think I can probably take on Zordral in the Carnival (which would give me two mage robes) and probably even Silke, but the former offers little room to maneouvre and uses Melf's Acid Arrow, and the latter has Improved Invisibility (making interruption a necessity) and Lightning Bolt. I've been successful so far, but I don't want to push my luck.

Microupdate:
So now that Imoen has dualed, the party is all about experience, experience, experience. We heard about some dogs/wolves and hobgoblin bandits in the Beregost Temple Area. We didn't think the Dawn Lord priest should have to put up with that. So we battled these potential hostiles which put Imoen at level 3 mage. She doesn't know any level 2 spells yet, will have to visit Thalantyr soon. I want especially to get mirror image for both Imoen and Vintral, that could really save their hide in Cloakwood ambushes once we get that far.
By the way, Imoen is using a sling, mainly to keep as much distance as possible from enemies. She is using the frost wand, while Vintral has a paralyze wand equipped.
Next plan will be to visit the Xvart village, perhaps they want to trade? Maybe they have some beat-up bracers they don't want that Imoen can use...Ajantis also heard of a nefarious scammer named Borda, we need to save the peasants from him.
Party Status:
Ajantis - level 5 paladin, 41 HP
Branwen - level 5 cleric (almost level 6), 33 HP
Vintral - level 6 bard, 28 HP
Imoen - level 6 thief (inactive) > level 3 mage, 29 HP

I wasn't going to take on Landrin's spiders just yet but I decided to bite the bullet. I wasn't taking any chances, though - Aon waited outside whilst the others unloaded a triple Sleep on them.
Silke was quickly interrupted by Magic Missiles, and Blinded. She has some pretty scary offense, but not much health, so she dropped quickly.
An ambush gave us a Winter Wolf pelt, though I accidentally had Aon drink the party's only healing potion. On the upside, that prompted me to spend some of our cash on potions for all the party.
The team are actually doing pretty well. With the right spell picks, they can mostly interrupt any other casters and Blind them before they can get anything off. Sleep is golden against a lot of the weaker melee foes, though it doesn't affect everything. We just need a little more XP before people start getting their third levels, and then I'll feel a lot safer.

Vintral and gang continue to battle many enemies in the wilderness and on the coast.
VALLEY OF THE TOMBS
* The amazon assassins in the valley of the tombs were defeated by stinking cloud/skeletons, with Ajantis being protected by the greenstone amulet. We sold/re-bought the amulet for 14,000 gold, now it has lots of charges.
* The crazy mage and his jellies were defeated - the jellies took a LONG time, partly because Imoen didn't have a weapon that could hurt them (hers was piercing). Got a close call, Vintral went down to 1/3 life he ran and healed up and then assissted. Ajantis tanked great as usual.
* The revenant - went smoothly if a bit slow. However, magic missiles from Vintral as well as via scroll was sufficient for a clean victory.
* 3 ghasts are no problem when the tank has the greenstone amulet - got the wand of monster summoning so well worth the trouble.
Ogre Hills:
* Saved a farmer's cow here. People think more highly of us now. We still aren't 20 rep yet, still recovering from the rep loss when Vintral failed to pick pocket Algerrons' cloak.
* Found some bandits with powerful arrows and bows. However, they were distracted by our skeletons and worse, got held by both Branwen's hold person and Vintral's paralyze wand. The paralyze wand was used often, especially against ogre berserkers. It got used up but served its purpose.
Ankheg Farm:
* We got the bowl from Sonner for the child priestess of umberlee. While traveling around a LOT of close calls. A single ankheg strike drops Vintral to 20% health. He runs and heals fast as he can with the party converging on his attacker. He survived, but easily could have bit it here.
* Cleared the Ankheg Nest and found farmer Brun's son. We in particular wanted the fireball wand, as our necklace of missiles is very low charges, but we would like to deal with the Ogres on the coast soon, but wanted some fireball capability when we did so.
* All Ankhegs should be destroyed, but they almost killed Vintral several times. Glad to be done with that area. It paid off in the end, as all these kills helped Vintral to get to level 7.
Vintral's equipment and configuration
Party Status:
Ajantis - Level 6 Paladin, 53 HP
Branwen - Level 6 Cleric, 48 HP
Vintral - Level 7 Bard, 39 HP
Imoen - Level 6 Thief (inactive) > Level 4 Mage, 29 HP

Instead, though, we approached Arkushule for a palm-reading. She refused to finish it and instead attacked me! The bad choice of using LMD instead of MM to interrupt let her get Ghost or Mage Armour up. Whilst manouvring, we also engaged a Dire Wolf. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought, because I thought it was a Dread Wolf, but Arkushule had already saved against one Blindness spell so my odds of Blinding both (we two left) weren't great.
Instead I tried Charm Person, and it worked! I never used to like this spell, because it's too much of a save-or-die-esq spell, and because if other enemies kill your new minion you don't get the XP. Since playing with Xan again recently, however, I've grown to love it - at least when it works.
Arkushule unloaded her Magic Missiles onto the wolf, and danced around in front of it to try and distract it from her new-found friends (i.e. us). We quickly killed it, and then she decided to let us practise Blindness spells on her. She saved against the first but not the second, so we decided to put her out of her misery. Even then she didn't attack, which was odd, but there wouldn't have been much she could do anyway.
Between a previous Tasloi, the Wolf and Arkushule's 900XP, everyone reached L3, though a spate of spell-scribing failure left us standing embarrassedly in Thalantyr's with a lot less gold and only a Mirror Image in each of Aon and Praesa's books. I should probably just have bought more scrolls, since I don't have much else to spend the cash on, but I'm going to go earn some more money first. At least Aon should be a lot harder to kill now.

Continued travelling the south, picking up experience. Killed the ghasts for the wand of monster summoning by having Kagain, protected with a potion of invulnerability, distract them on the north-east end, while everyone else entered and bombarded them with missiles. The ghasts turned around for my party, we exit the cavern, rise repeat. The SCS AI seems to be able to recognize which party member it will be easiest to kill e.g. who has lowest health, lowest saves, etc. But this can be manipulated vs. melee monsters by running around with the target character while everyone else attacks the monster unmolested.
Narcillius was almost a problem. The mustard jellies were no match for Shar-Teel and the longsword +2, but the wizard repeatedly cast minor globe of invulnerability, and confused Kagain, hit him with several missiles, then summoned 10 monsters right around him and moved out of the way. Clever! But fortunately, Narcilllius had just previously attacked Kagain with Melf's Meteors, prompting our warrior to put on the ring of fire resistance and down a fire resistance bottle. His resistance being at 90%, Lilith promptly cast a fireball from the necklace right at him, and Narcillius was more or less out of spells.
Melian was a pushover.
Since the party was in the area, and everyone was around L4, and Viconia had her first skeleton summoning, we decided to take on Karkh. Didn't remember how high a level he was. The skeletons and one wand summon distracted him for a long time. Kagain again got confused and wandered around till he bumped into 12 enemy skeletons. A web from Edwin helped but the battle with the skeletons was over just as Karkh finished off the summons. Karkh's weapon was broken in his fight, and many of his contingencies were used up. A great victory coming! Then he pops out of the fog and one-shot kills Lilith with an acid arrow. Game Over. I could have one the battle had Lilith been positioned more safely, or had I resummoned some creatures when the old ones were used up.
@ The Fred - why would MM be a better interruption than LMD?

I believe it's slightly faster to cast. MM has the fastest casting time in the game, IIRC, so you can actually wait until you see someone casting something else, then pause and fire it off. Most times you can interrupt even other fast spells like Mirror Image like this.Belloc wrote...

Some piddly things done. For one, we cleared hostiles out of the Drizzt area. Ran into a bandit group composed of a mage, archer and melee. But a silence from Branwen rendered them harmless and helpless. Imoen leveled to 5 mage in this area.
Also cleared the Ogres on the coast. There were bandits too, bears, gibberlings and wardogs but none of them proved a danger to the party. Both Imoen and Vintral can cast a single level 3 spell. Imoen has lightning bolt (her only level 3 spell), and Vintral has dispel magic memorized (to be ready for Karhk when we meet him).
Everybody has a LONG way to level. Imoen needs 17,000 experience, Vintral 25,000, Branwen 10,000 and Ajantis a whopping 28,000.

Villon the First had a daring life, including backstabbing Tarnesh, backstabbing a hobgoblin for his spiffy-looking boots, back-stabbing a skeleton for its skull, and wand-of-frosting an ugly ogrillon to a frozen chunk, and losing the 3500 gp gauntlets of dexterity. He crept up to 5000/5000 xp. Then, on a routine trip south to the Carnival for some well-deserved rest, he appeared on the north edge and was immediately attacked by 12 kobolds, including several elites with flaming arrows. Before he could dash back a few feet to the edge of the map, he was dead.
Update on Villon the Second:
Having been forewarned in a dream of the wicked dangers of the carnival, Villon the Second resolved never under any circumstances to enter the carnival from the north. He has progressed nicely, and is now 26 hp (including a familiar), with 7000/7000 xp (L3/L4), with 20 reputation and 7000 gold. Priorities: purchase the robe of the good archmagi. Then the dagger of venom. The robe comes before the dagger because of the AC5. Even though shield gives Villon an AC4, he is still terrifyingly vulnerable to archer ambushes. Hence he has invested in the shield amulet, which turned out to be a life saver - ambushed by skeletons, he immediately switched on the amulet. He was hit once, but the amulet wasn't disrupted, unlike a spell, so after that one hit he safely ran away.
Points of interest: Algernon wasn't very happy about Villon trying to take away his cloak. Fortunately Villon had 4x charm person in his spellbook. He would charm Algernon then have another go at theft. Fourth time lucky.
Only recently learned of the power of the cloak. Villon doesn't plan on using it over much (he's a good sport), but he enjoyed creating a hobgoblin army to take out the leader hobgoblin with the boots of stealth.
Playing as solo thief Villon almost always travels at night.

Make sure you get the Girdle of Piercing from the Ogre on the Coast Way, if you haven't already. A Blindness spell (plus a ranged weapon) is probably the safest way to do this.Belloc wrote...

Villon blinded him, then ran away drawing the other skellies after him, then hid in shadows and circled back around. The skeletons are usually aware of the invisibility even though they can't attack, so they move around too much, but the blinded skellie stayed in place.
For sure got the belt from the ogre. Blindness works well. Sleep works better. Also sleep works wonders on Landrin's spiders.

- Gains +1 AC at first level, and a further bonus of +1 AC per 5 levels
- May go into a Feral Rage once per day per 10 levels. The enraged state lasts for 60 seconds, and grants a bonus of +2 to hit, damage, and AC, and immunity to charm, hold and fear, maze, imprisonment, stun and sleep. He also gains 15 temporary hit points
- May cast Call of the Wild once per day. This summons an animal companion who will fight for the caster for 3 rounds + 1 round/level. More powerful creatures are summoned at higher levels
Disadvantages:
- Becomes winded after Feral Rage. While he's winded he receives -2 to hit, -2 to damage and a +2 penalty to armor class.
- Limited to one proficiency point in Bastard Sword, Long Sword, Short Sword, Two - Handed Sword, Katana, Scimitar, Halberd, Flail and Crossbow

More of the Sword Coast has been explored. Found a huge pile of ogres of various types, but fortunately a sleep by Imoen made them lot easier to deal with. There was a "surgeon" nearby who healed what little damage we took.
In the same area also battled some Sirines. Was going well at first, then Imoen got poisoned which mean a 2nd sirine must have joined the mix since the first one was playing with Ajantis and some skeletons. Imoen gulped some antidotes, Vintral fired a fireball at the 2nd sirine and Branwen her sling. Imoen was still gettting pummeled so I had her pull away. 2 more fireballs the sirine is still standing - Imoen dies, and the sirine shortly thereafter. On to the temple we go...
Next area explored was Ulcaster School (surface). Mostly hobgoblins, skeletons and kobolds. Not much challenge. We got a bit full so sold our junk and came back to explore Ulcaster School Dungeon. Imoen had NOT regained her thief abilities yet. Fortunately, there were only two traps I was going to set off. One I knew was a fireball trap. We will let Ajantis set that one off with his 60% fire resistance. The 2nd one I had no idea what kind of trap it was (since of course normally I de-trap it). So I had Ajantis gulp an invulnerability potion to up his saves and set it off. Was another fireball trap no problem. No one got any levels here, however Branwen is close to level 7, just need about 1500 experience more for her. Everyone else is still ages from their next level.
We gave Ulcaster that book he wanted and left the area. We checked Thalantyr prices, he wants us to pay about 19000 gold for a good robe for Imoen with our 18 reputation. I forgot to try to cast friends and seeing if that would make any difference. But in any case, our goal is clear.

13500/13500 xp now, L4 Mage/L5 Thief. Have acquired both the robe of the good archmagi, the dagger of venom, the wand of monster summoning, and the bracers of archery. Pretty much cleared out the most southerly regions. Sendai and Alexander both downed a potion of speed, which seemed scary, but like everything else so far, the three were unable to come close to hitting Villon's -2 AC and (I think) -10 AC vs missiles. Sendai was taken out with wands, and Alexander was charmed into killing the other guy. The only half-dangerous event was a critical hit by the mountain bear on the bridge for 20 hp out of 30. Villon has been playing much more cautiously than before and has learned from experience to run away, so he promptly gulped (up until this noreload challenge I would have said 'wasted') a potion of invisibility. The bear returned to the west side of the bridge, and was taken care of with wands and MMs.
Aims: get to 5th level wizard as soon as possible. Villon desperately needs better offensive spells. To do this, he must earn enough to buy the greenstone amulet. Then he will take on the sirens. Then he will figure out where to acquire a fireball spell. That done, he will stock up on useful potions and take on the Nashkel Mines.
Notes: with so few hit points (31) every battle must be carefully chosen. I think multiclass thief/mage might actually gain fewer hp more slowly than any other single or multi class.
I'm using mods which provide a potion case, scroll case, gem bag, and ammo belt within chapter 2. This obviously makes soloing much easier than in vanilla, though I hope SCS more than compensates for this advantage. It's mostly to make the game much more fun, because my options are more varied.
When targeted against an adjacent creature, the wand of lightning seems to act more like the wand of frost - it strikes only that creature. It seems to need a little bit of room to turn into a full lightning bolt.
When stealthing in the region with the wand of monster summoning, I walked towards Hentold to get his dagger +2, not intending to take on the Revenant at that point. However right next to him I saw two pairs of ankheg antennae poking out of the ground, and hastily walked away. I'd never seen them there before, but after research I learned that they do spawn in that area.
