Anyway, never did my mini-update yesterday.
We were trying to get to the Gnoll Stronghold (the Tome from the cave would be nice, and there are a few scrolls thereabouts too), but ran into issues around Bear River. Having faced quite a few foes in the north of the map, we decided to rest and deal with the bear with all our spells ready. However, our sleep was disturbed by an Ogre Beserker. Well, we'd already beaten one of these guys, but we'd used Sleep then and didn't have any left, I don't think, so I figured I'd just have Praesa buff with Mirror Image (as a safety net) and run around distracting him whilst we whittled down his health.
TOO SLOW!
A single hit took her down as she was casting. Damn! OK, well, finish up and head back to res her I guess... except Ilsani let him get too close and a 16-hp hit downed her in one as well. Thus followed a somewhat frenzied collecting of the gear, and a flight to the edge of the map. Actually, Aon had used Mirror Image (more successful, this time) and we'd dealt a fair bit of damage to the guy, so he was probably on his last legs. The only trouble was that I couldn't risk losing another character (Aon wouldn't be able to carry all their stuff). So, we fled and spent 800gp raising everyone. It's a good job I didn't spend that on scrolls after all.
Take two, and the bear was taken down easily with Blindness, though I had Praesa lead the way with Mirror Image and Shield up just to be sure. Jared gave us a nice pair of boots and we got down to the Gnoll Stronghold.
I'm thinking I may have to take Bassilus on after this for the cash.

Am I right in surmising that there's no real advantage to casting Friends if you already have 20 Cha? The table shows no increase in the decrease of prices after 20, but it only goes up to 25.
Yep, max discount in shops is on 20 Cha. Thats the reason I maximize (18) Cha of all my chars. Plus Nymph (or Algernon) Cloak and voila.

After clearing bandit camp, Lokuryn headed to Cloakwood. He helped noble Aldeth against druids, killed numerous spiders and sneaked through the rest of the wood to the mines entrance. He drank Oil of Speed and killed mercenaries guarding the entrance with the help of amulet of missiles.
In the mine, Lokuryn found Davaeorn’s sanctum and killed him with acid arrows.

Lokuryn is currently operating in Baldur’s Gate. He found tomes increasing DEX, INT and WIS and solved Poison quest.

He hit the level cap and is currently level 10 Thief with 57 HP.

Nornall, elven male NG Feralan.
Gorion is dead and I'm stuck with Imoen (going for the Trilogy party).
We dequip Xzar and Montaron, return a ring to Joia and share a drink with Marl before trading books with Firebead Elvenhair. Then we delivered a letter to Mirianne and continue to Nashkel.
After a chat with Noober and Oublek we spot a couple of likely companions (Edwin and Minsc) but decide to hold off until we find a full set (Viconia and Jaheira).
Mods looking good so far. Buildings of interest have been marked example where I hovered my cursor (not shown) over the smithy.

Villon is now L5 Mage/L6 Thief. Has cleared all the weaker southern parties. Has purchased the greenstone amulet. The dagger of venom is a wonderful thing. The strength tome under candlekeep will be very important for the THAC0 bonus for backstabs.
Tried to pickpocket the cleric at firewine falls for his protection from magic scroll with 25% pickpocketing. Failed, then he cast a hold person spell at me. Had no idea (should have realized) he was a caster. Ran for the edge and didn't make it in time. Rolled an 8 on Villon's save vs. spells. Fortunately Villon's saves are really low - 5 for spells. He started casting another one and Villon departed the area. Came back and charmed him. Instead of attempting to pickpocket him, Villon lead him into a band of skeletons, who cheerfully killed the man out of sight. Didn't want to risk a reputation hit for his death.

Captain Brage is safe again, so I recruit Minsc and Edwin. They are already bickering constantly so life will be interesting.
I sneak into a pit to rescue Dynaheir, only for the gnolls to kill her as we try to escape. More gnolls block our exit and Minsc perishes too. Edwin is beside himself with glee until we get them both raised in Nashkel.
Minsc deals with an assassin called Tarnesh before we meet up with Khalid and Jaheira. Imoen waits at the bar while the rest of us decide what to do. There is a bit of a shock when Khalid and Dynaheir depart upstairs, this could be the last we see of them.
So now I have Minsc, Edwin, Imoen and Jaheira as companions. We head into Peldvale where Viconia joins us.

Minsc decides to spice up our travels by using the cursed berserking sword, inevitably meaning he will be raised more than once and potentially stranding us if ambushed (fun). Edwin joins in, with a girdle of gender, leading to many bad jokes about adding few letters to his name. Edwin Crossdresserion.
We help a dryad of the cloudpeaks then kill a couple of wolves before returning a drowned cat to Drienne.
We are ambushed by two half-ogres and a ghoul, and fend them off despite Minsc attacking me.
Before we can continue Edwin starts to whine about Dynaheir. Fine, I dump Viconia and Imoen at the FAI, collect Khalid and Dynaheir then set off in search of monsters.

Minsc needs to know if he is the best fighter. Apparently not.

Imoen and Viconia are relieved to see us return, suggesting we return to the gnoll fortress. On the way we are ambushed again and Minsc decides to prove to me that Shar Teel was wrong (THACO 11 vs AC 5 is a foregone conclusion, and he has a mighty reach with that sword).
Another death. Back to the drawing board.

It’s been a long journey but I finally made it to Baldur’s Gate without getting myself killed by the seemingly endless parade of assassins out for my sweet elvish neck.

I acquired a nifty longsword from a bounty hunter named Greywolf then used it with my armour advantage to hunt ankhegs (at -6 they need a 20 to hit me) and collected three tomes so far before flooding the hidden mine... after releasing all the prisoners of course. I cast ‘Strength’ to cart some excess junk back to FAI but got ambushed on the way… the strength bonus from the humble ‘cloak of the wolf’ helped me out of what could have proved a sticky spot.

I used the extra funds to purchase a nice new necklace from an inn in Ulgoth's Beard plus recharged my ‘wand of monster summoning’ and also the ‘wand of polymorph’ from the bogeyman quest… life is good!

All goes well (got to about 7000xp) until I am ambushed by a half-ogre. No problem, I'll just out-run it. As I start to move a ghast appears next to me and hits me (AC of 2). I'm held, and only two more hits are required to kill me.
So, on to the next candidate.

He fails to survive a game crash while looking for loot in Winthrops inn (no save game to rely on so game over in record time).

Gorion is dead and I tell Imoen it is safer for me to travel alone.
I'm sneaking around, delivering justice from the shadows. So far I have helped Captain Brage, a woodland dryad, Drienne, Prism, Melicamp (failed), Wenric, Samuel, Firebead, Marl and Mirianne.
In addition I've belted an ogre, removed Gnarl / Hairtooth, read a tome of leadership, retained boots made for Zhurlong and reached level 5 of enlightenment.

I make my way through Nashkel mine, killing some kobolds and sneaking past others. I'm careful to rest in the shadows, and am soon observing a half-orc cleric called Mulahey. I have limited potions at my disposal and the greenstone amulet required tens of thousands of gold coins. Hard Times.
I gulp a couple of potions (stone giant strength, heroism) and hoping this will be enough move to block him in. His minions are out of sight and my first blow stuns him.

The potions are still at work as I eliminate two oozes on my way out of the mine. They have worn off by the time I reach Nashkel, and I have to decide whether to say hello to Nimbul. He turns nasty so I hit him.
I fail to stun him, and although badly wounded he casts mirror image while I shrug off a horror spell. I get four magic missiles so glug a blue potion. Four more missiles and another potion. Four more and a third potion. Four more, and I cast healing touch, then I am through his images. A final four missiles and a potion are followed by his death. Painful but once the horror was cast I was in control.
Tranzig is at Feldeposts Inn. I disrupt his spell but fail to stun him. He Melfs me then runs away scared. I sneak after him and finish the job.

Candle keep feels smaller now but I don’t have the time to reminisce because the duke is waiting for my report. Whilst collecting all the gear a true hero needs in order to look fabulous I found myself in the middle of a bar fight of all things… they were tuff but I was smart, their all-powerful wizard opened with ‘Mirror Image’ before failing his polymorph save… needless to say I won the fight, yippee!

I tried the same trick against the iron throne guys but their magic resistance was too high (at least until the potions wore off) so I settled for force feeding them peons and went PMS in their faces… glad I don’t have to clean this mess up.

p.s. @corey_russell you definitely get the loot… also it appears that changing people into squirrels does NOT in itself make them hostile.

Took on the basilisk garden. After a cast of protection from petrification, didn't need the ghast at all. Best critical hit backstab damage so far was vs. a lesser basilisk - 63 hp. Then took on the party there. Prebuffed just a little with basic melee protections. My backstab worked but the fighter/mage saved vs. poison. Ran off and successfully cast hold vs. their fighter, and went back into the fray. Magic and strikes from all sides, and the two magic users (cleric and mage) both casting spells. The cleric cast doom, and a split second later the mage cast hold person. Drank a potion of speed because it was getting hairy. Ran from the spells, which travel quite slowly. Didn't reach the edge of the map before the spells struck, and there was not enough time to take an extra action. Failed the save. Dead shortly thereafter. Villon should have drank a potion of freedom, but knowing they were in limited supply he'd wanted to save them for the Cloakwood. Also should have used the ring of invisibility he'd just bought. In fact, a thief using that ring (sufficiently charged up) + the cloak of non-detection should be almost invincible in BG1, barring area of effect spells. But even than you can heal while invisible.
The illusionist/thief was a really fun character. Also realized I like soloing much better than partying. It's an interesting challenge to work within the limitations of your chosen class. With a group the overall party behaviour looks very similar from run to run.
Question: Do spells cast on a person who becomes invisible still target that person? I know they dissipate if the person becomes invisible during the casting, but what happens if the spell's already been cast?

That's true, but it's still a great defence against hold and stun type spells - you might be held, but there are very few opponents in BG1 who can see invisible and therefore won't attack you.ussnorway wrote...
Sorry Belloc, if you go invis after the spell then it will still hit you... some mods could change it but thats the basic rule. Try half-elf fighter-mage-cleric.
The ring of invisibility for this purpose is not really suitable as (like all items) it doesn't trigger until the end of your existing round and therefore it's likely that the spell would hit you before it takes effect. A potion of invisibility will be immediate (so long as you have not already used another potion that round).

Points in Blunt Weapons (for the +3 staff - of backstabbing - from Ulgoth's Beard) and Missile Weapons. 35 points in open locks to get 70 for the Candlekeep Star Sapphire, and 5 in set traps.
For some reason, the ingame profile is displaying open locks as 60 points, but the level-up screen has 70, and he was able to open that chest. When I tried to set a trap with my last thief, I failed and got hit for 7 hp. What are the risks of setting traps below 100% proficiency?

I'll consider it. I'm dissuaded from solo mage-cleric because once in combat there simply aren't enough rounds available to make all the extra spells useful, and I don't like excessive pre-buffing.

Teven takes me to meet Tazok. I have to fight him, but after a dozen or so sneak attacks he calls it a draw and wanders off, leaving me to roam the camp at will.
I strike at Ardenor Crush, my second blow stunning him. His hobgoblins are swarming me and I cure wounds instead of adding another stunning blow. I am surrounded so try to kill Ardenor and leap over his body, but before I can do so his gang cut me down.
It's fair to say I haven't got back into the swing of BGT yet

They then investigated some caves in the south of the region, finding a Carrion Crawler (Blinded) and a mysterious tome (Ilsani now has an unecessarily high 19+2 Cha).
However, getting back to civilisation was an ordeal. It was pretty scary.
First, we were ambushed by some gnolls and a mountain bear. Sleep on the Gnolls, Blindness on the bear, and we were good to go.
The second time we weren't so lucky - an Ogre Mage. Well, Ilsani had Detect Invisibility memorised (because it's the only spell she has), so I had her reveal him whilst Aon and Praesa used their Mirror Images. The plan was that they would soak up and Melf's Acid Arrows whilst he was Blinded. Unfortunately, he used his first one on Ilsani - don't worry, the glugging of two potions was enough to keep her alive. The issue came when a Winter Wolf got involved. It burned through all of Praesa's Mirror Images, so I had Aon distract it (risky). Basically it was only a matter of time before it killed someone. Thankfully, we managed to take them both down - the wolf was actually worth more XP.
The only problem was, we still couldn't get back. Resting near the Xvart village let us be attacked, and then Borda started to approach me as I was manoevring, so I fled. We were ambushed again, by Xvarts and a Ghast. I was going to kill them, but the Xvarts started to wake up from their Sleep so I just fled.
Thankfully, we made it back in one piece. After all that, though, we have very little gold or XP to show for our trip, with a Skull Trap scroll being the one main highlight... ugh.

I have an evil scheme brewing for my abysmal brother but first things first… a swift backstab deals with the iron throne elders.

Then I set about clearing the city of its would be assassins.

Now for the main event; I normally open with the ‘cloud kill’ from Fire Leaf Forest but this time around I wanted to try something a little naughty. I removed the Lightning & Cloudkill traps plus summed up and used my peons to drop ‘Greater Malison’ then ‘Cloudkill’… sibling rivalry can be murder you know.

With his saves shot to bits, Sarevoks’ opening speech came out as something like “fear me… squeak I’m going to rule the world… squeak!”
