Nice work Gate.

I think once I have saved Imoen I will come back and run a bit further with my mage team. I'm kinda itching to try out BGT or maybe TuTu, though, so I equally may start a new game under one of those. Until then, see you in Athkatla! ;-)

Vintral the level 8 bard continuing adventures...

The party finally encounters Drassus and company. Branwen casts 2 squads of skeletons (= 14 of them), Imoen puts improved invisibity on Vintral then Vintral and the skeletons creep up. This pulls just Drassus. Vintral fires off a stinking cloud, which affects Drassus - Drassus dies quickly to ranged power. The party then creeps up and picks the enemies off with ranged. Branwen threw in a silence during the fight for good measure. Clean victory.

As for level 2, the key fight was Heirashan and all her buddies. I had poor execution, and it turned out badly. Vintral however survived the lightning bolts, probably because he was wearing the boots of grounding. Ajantis survived as well thanks to his potion of magic blocking.

Time to pick up Imoen's and Branwent's equipment - this took a very long time in real time (almost an hour) to bring just what I must have for the return trip and put everything else (including the important haste scroll) in a nearby container. We decided we would recruit Yeslick to help with looting. We returned to FAI and resurrected our fallen. We also bought cheap stuff for Yeslick. Then we headed back and got all our junk from the container.

Hopefully the rest of the mine goes a bit smoother...

Vintral the Level 9 Bard...dealing with Davaeorn and some activities in the city of Baldur's Gate

After dealing with all the enemies in the Cloakwood mine, it was time to deal with Davaeorn. First, Imoen cast invisibility on herself and de-trapped the hallway and backed off. Then we buffed Ajantis with protection from fire/lightning/heroism/greenstone amulet/magic protection potion. Ajantis charged and engaged Davaeorn. Ajantis successfully defeated the evil mage.

The party just barely was able to loot everything I wanted (well almost - I had to leave a plate mail behind that's 120 gold, but our party is to weak to carry it). We found clues that lead us to the city of Baldur's Gate we will go there next. We successfully returned from the mine to FAI. We sold our junk and bid Yeslick good bye.

Next up was the City of Baldur's Gate. Activies of note:

* Vintral's pick-pocket is now 100% - he easily got the amulet for Nephre from her ex-lover.

* Found some hostile necromancers top floor of Sorcerous Sundries - but thanks to a remove fear by Branwen, they weren't a threat for very long.

* Vintral used the thieve's DEX tome (thinking WAY ahead - at end of BG II will do good route so lose a DEX for that - when that happens my AC won't drop with this action)

* Found some thieves in a house - I told them I was one of them, and got the password wrong. They couldn't take a joke apparently and we had to mow them down.

* Encountered the sisters of entropy, Deserta and Vayya. Did usual buffs, but we managed to pull Deserta by herself. Being pumped by the many magic missiles of both Vintral and Imoen made her die fast. Vayya was easy to kill EXCEPT she confused Vintral. Vintral duly killed a few civilians nearby. Oddly enough our rep did NOT drop. Was surprised but quite happy about it. As for the loot, the gauntlets of strength is a big boon for the party. Finally Vintral can forget strength spell and memorize mirror image instead. Also, we went back to our base in Beregost and removed Branwen's ankheg armor and put on a +1 ring and full plate.

* Found a house with 5 Ogre Mages who wanted our heads. Our wands were devasting (2x fire and 1 fear). Thanks to equipment and buffs Ajantis had 110% fire resistance so the fierballs didn't botther him at all.

* The dopplegangers at the Seven Suns and the Merchant's Consortium were no match for our party. Scar was quite happy with our good news about the Seven Suns. He gave us another task in the eastern side of town in the sewers, and we accepted it.

* Sewers - the Ogre Mage and carrion crawler pets weren't too much of a problem. They did manage to hold Branwen but they were killed before they could take advantage of that. While I was in the vicinity, we entered the Undercellar and Vintral gulped a thieve's potion to put his pick pocket at 140%. He then picked up the cloak of balduran and immediately equipped it.

* Did something new with the skyship quest, don't know why I didn't think of it before. I had Branwen loot the components via sanctuary without fighting. I then reported my success to Thuibuild, which gaves us 4000 exp AND the 4000 for killing the Halraan (or however you spell that kind of mage that tried to kill us). This was enough to get imoen level 8. THEN I went back to the skyship component building, had Ajantis do lots of buffs including magic protection potion and borrowed the cloak of balduran putting his magic resist at 75%. Invulnerability potion for good measure. Needless to say the sisters stood no chance. Doing it this order gave me extra 4000 experience.

*** Some thoughts about this run ***
Bards are growing on me. He certainly is not an "uber" character like many of my fighters have been, but he's a huge contributor to the party in many ways. He levels fast, which increases his lore quickly. This in turn saves us from paying shopkeepers/temples to identify things. This also allows instant ID of any magic item we found to be used immediately. This in turn, allows the arcane users of the party to learn lots of offensive spells rather than cluttering some of them with identifys. He's a wand user, that helps lots in BG 1. Thanks to his fast leveling, his magic missile attacks are huge. And lastly, his arcane spell support has been quite helpful during the run. Oops that wasn't lastly - it's nice that his pickpockets are high, so that the thief in the party doens't have to waste their points on that. I don't use that skill much, but it has come in handy in a few key events: getting ring of free action from Dushai, getting amulet from Nephre's ex-lover, cloak of balduran from Quenash and Algeron's Cloak.
***

Party Status:
Ajantis - Level 7 paladin, 63 HP
Branwen - Level 8 cleric, 58 HP
Vintral - Level 9 bard, 49 HP
Imoen - Level 6 thief / Level  8 mage, 39 HP

I found Bards grew on me, too, when I SCKed Imoen into one for one of my runs. I never liked them because they seemed like watered down mages with a somewhat useless Bard Song ability. However, their quick leveling means they gain spells like a Fighter/Mage or Thief/Mage, they gain health faster, and they can use most weapons. Really they're closer to an F/M than anything else, with a splash of thief flavour thrown in too.

On a one-to-one basis, I think the F/M is stronger (better saves/thac0 and perhaps HP), but a bard is a very reliable contributor to any party is what I am finding.

Elie -- Female Elf -- CN Fighter 1 / Mage 1

** NEW GAME **

Strength: 11
Dexterity: 19
Constitution:17
Intelligence:17
Wisdom:15
Charisma:8

BGT-Weidu no reloads challenge. BG1NPC mod.

Blog started (not much there yet) at http://bgtelie.blog.com/

I found Elie (Eh-Lee) difficult to create, as F/M need five stats and have a minimum of 8 CHA (no dump stats to work with).  I don't have much experience with multiclassed characters ( mostly just Aerie from BG2 ), so this should be a new experience.

Other than that, the only initial comment is that "Find Familiar" is a huge benefit for first level characters.  Lots of extra hit points, and (for the cat) a party member that can scout ahead stealthed with great success.

I love bards, too. They are among the most versatile and fun characters to play.

Update on adventures of soloing elven thief Lokuryn (L10, 57HP):
Lokuryn returned from Candlekeep to Baldur’s Gate. He learned from Tamoko about Sarevok’s plans, saved Eltan, killed Cythandria, Slythe and Krystin, and defeated Sarevok in battle in Ducal palace (only Belt survived).

Image IPB

Next, Lokuryn headed south to Durlag’s Tower. On the way there, he stopped in Beregost and stole Algernon’s cloak. He found his way down to the fourth underground level and challenged Demonknight himself. During the fight, Lokuryn was stunned via Power word: Stun, but luckily, the next spell Demonknight cast on him was Dispel magic.

Image IPB

Finally, the beast fell and Lokuryn left the tower to sell loot, rest and refit.

Image IPB
Back in Ulgoth’s Beard, Lokuryn defeated army of cultists, though he himself almost died few times. In the haunted mansion, he killed cultist guards, Tracea Carol, and finally also Aec’Letec, using hit and run tactics.

Vintral the Level 9 Bard - finishing City of Baldur's Gate quests, return to Candlekeep

There were a lot of quest and battles in Baldur's Gate, but the party handled them well. The fact that Imoen can cast magic missile 9 times sure has something to do with that...

We encountered a rather aggressive group by the name of Mountain Maulers. We had a huge army facing them, our ranged power/magic missiles was just too much for them.

Everything in the city done, time to deal with the Iron Throne. I know one of the casters likes to cast confusion - that wouldn't be nice for a small party like us. So Ajantis used a protection from magic scroll, had 20 arrows of detonation, went upstairs and unloaded. He used a lot of arrows, but he was victorious.

Nothing left to do but head to Candlekeep. We found out it had been inflitrated by dopplegangers. We also got framed for killing the Iron Throne leaders. But Tethoril ported us to the crypts. More dopplegangers and undead here. No problem for the party. For the 2nd part of the crypts, Vintral made Imoen invisible and she walked around detrapping everything. Then Ajantis walked up to skeleton masses and fired arrows of detonation. This cleared up the mess nicely.

For the Greater Doppleganger, we just had skeleton distractions of our own, and used ranged power/spells.

Next up was Prat and his group. Ajantis volunteered to be the man of the hour. He gulped haste potion/potion of absorbtion/fire protection from Branwen/frost giant potion. He then creeped forward and started unloading arrows of detonation. This was too much for the enemies, though they did manage to drop Ajantis by 20 HP.

Branwen equipped our extra free action ring we have and both her and Ajantis used protection from poison scroll. The two of them cleared out all the spiders in the area. Ajantis got attacked by a greater basilisk while he was fighting the spiders, that was scary didn't have stone to flesh scrolls. Fortunately Ajantis made his save.

Imoen cast gaze reflection on Ajantis and Ajantis cleared out the Basilisks. Ajantis made his final level here is now 71 HP.

We escaped the crypts, sold our junk in FAI and will head to Ulgoth's Beard to see if we can get any useful level 5 spells. Imoen will be level 9 mage soon, and Vintral will be 10 shortly as well.

Vintral the level 10 Bard - FINAL Update

The only thing that needs talking about is my duchal palace fight. The prep was great, as you can see here.

We were doing good, I then I tried a new spell I don't usually use in the duchal palace fight - this turned out to be a bad idea. I cast Chaos on the dopplegangers. But as the fight progress, I noticed it affected the flamin fist mercenaries! So I had to kill the flaming fist, dropping my rep to rock bottom. Belt was still blue circle and took my evidence. Sarevok ran, but then horrors of horros happened - somehow the dukes became hostile! Now they won't teleport me to the thieve's maze!

Ajantis is saying he's going to kill me. So we flee to Beregost Temple, donate 9500 gold 500 at a time, and finally the party won't break up.

But when I got to Baldur's Gate the fist are still after me, I put them to sleep, and go to the thieve's guild, only to find out the thieve's maze is not "clickable". I cannot follow Sarevok. Apparently I needed Belt to tranport me there to get access to it.

So then I went to duchal palace, thinking maybe I could charm Belt and talk to him - but I can't enter the palace, even with our invitation.

Even though Vintral is not dead, I can't chase Sarevok, so looks like game over.

Time to think about what character to start next - was thinking about a 6 paladin party, no-reload.

Corey the Level 2 Paladin entering Trilogy no-reload challenge...

Vanilla BG 1
Tales of the Sword Coast expansion
Official TotSC patch
Core Rules at all times
"gore on" - means characters can be chunked
no mods

Since Vintral can't make any more progress, rolled a new character. He has 5 fellow bhaalspawn paladin friends. NPCs will only join if a paladin gets chunked - and even then the NPC himself must be a paladin. Here are their stats and equipment configs, in the tanking order:

Joshua's Character Sheet
Joshua's equpment and configuration
** large sword
** axe
He will always be sword & shield, ranged will be axes

Uriah's Character Sheet
Uriah's equipment and configuration
** Spiked weapons
** missile weapons
There's a number of nice spiked weapons, however, if I had to do it again would have make him either short sword or blunt weapons, as there is no +2 spiked weapon in vanilla BG 1 that I know of. Ranged is sling, he will always use a shield

Lily Gene's Character Sheet
Lily Gene's equipment and configuration
** Blunt weapons
** short sword
I made her near the end of my character creation and realized no one was proficient with the Ashideena, had to have at least one person able to use that well. I wanted this person also to alway use sword and shield but wanted high APR ranged weapon. This left either throwing daggers or darts, went with throwing daggers.

Hanna's Character Sheet
Hanna's equipment and configuration
** Spear
** missile weapons
In vanilla BG 1, there's some strong crossbow ammonition. Hanna will usually use a halberd and crossbow

Corey's Character Sheet
Corey's equipment and configuration
** large sword
** bow
Intend to use two-hand sword for melee and composite bow for ranged

Paja's Character Sheet
Paja's equipment and configuration
** small sword
** bow
Did small sword as again number of +2 daggers/swords in the game. Main weapon will be shortbow. I know, the composite bow is 1 more dmg than even the +1 shortbow, but the idea is she will eventually use Marek's nice shortbow and Corey will eventually use bow of markmanship. This character is also our "loremaster" as you can see from her stats.

I had a tough time rolling what I wanted, and certainly did not roll 20 min. for each character! I see now that only 1 character can even use scrolls in BG 2, hopefully that won't be a problem.

The paladins have cleared the road areas between Candleekeep and Nashkel as well as High Hedge. In High Hedge an interesting thing happened - 5 people leveled off the same kill.

There's only been on death so far (Joshua) and it was completely unnecessary. We battled the belt ogre as level ones and he was killed - but if I just had everyone use ranged, Joshua would not have died. Need to be a bit more careful. And especially keep our distance from powerful melees until the front-liners can get some more HP under their belt.

Personally, I would call this a bug. I mean, Belt should have teleported you if he was willing to speak to you, and Chaos probably shouldn't have acted this way in the first place. Furthermore, even if you had intentionally killed the Flaming Fist (or used a Fireball or whatever), I imagine in a real-life situation that they would have put it down to friendly fire, at least when Sarevok was on the loose and they needed you to kill him. Plus you managed to complete the fight even though you actually made it harder for yourself, so I for one would think a reload would be allowable. Hard to say, though.

I don't have a reload prior to the palace fight, so that's all moot. Would have to do a console thing. I'm having fun with my paladins though, so not worried about it.

Nope Vaclavc not in vanilla - if I go there the maze is not enterable. It gets "unlocked" or whatever you want to call it after talking with one of the dukes after Sarevok flees. I never got that dialog as I think my summons attacked the dukes.

I know the point's moot as Corey is playing a different game anyway, but I wouldn't class it as a bug.  If you use a spell that can have consequences for friends as well as enemies I think you shouldn't be surprised at nasty results.  I'm not at all sure that in a real-life situation the dukes would have forgiven a 'friendly-fire' incident just on the grounds that your intentions were honourable.

Corey the level 4 paladin and 5 fellow paladin adventurers...

Everybody made 2 more levels each, so thought would post their progress. I have the front 2 guys on aggressive fighter script, and the rest on fighter ranged script. A lot of fights don't even have to intervene, though I am being careful to take control of the trickier fights. Seeing the inventory screens will help my comments, so here they are:

Joshua's equipment and configuration
Joshua's main weapon is Greywolf's sword. Everybody stood at range, Joshua used haste potion and heroism - we killed Greywolf so fast, he didn't even hit Joshua.

Uriah's equipment and configuration
I gave boots of avoidance to Uriah since Joshua's full plate already helps defend against arrows with its -3 to piercing.

Lily Gene's equipment and configuration
We make a lot of stops in High Hedge to replenish her throwing daggers,
but it saves us the gold to replace them so not  complaining. Her
attacks with them are 2.5 attacks per round. Somehow she always seems to
level first, now sure how that worked out.

Hanna's equipment and configuration
The most HP of the party. We recently were able to buy the light crossbow of
speed - now all 4 ranged party members attack at 2.5 attacks per round,
very considerable and would be even more if we had magical ammo.

Corey's (protaganist) equipment and configuration
Corey uses belt of piercing to help in ambushes. What I found
ironic about him is that he has the least HP of the party (hope that
doesn't bite me in BG 2 - power word kill would be bad atm). But at
level 4 he has 31 HP with 18 CON and with 9 CON and level 4Paja has 35 HP! I know this happens because I am on core rules on level ups, I just think it's ironic.

Paja's equipment and configuration
She only gets 1 lore per level, but anything she IDs saves us 100 gold, so am still happy I made a lore character.

I am saving all potions this time. Things like fire resistance potions could be quite helpful with traps.

We solved the Nashkel mine problem. We just went directly to Mulahey, so only had to eat 3 traps to do so. Mulahey could not survive our concentrated power, nor could his minions. His minions got some nice hits on Corey, but Corey just backed off, healed, and let them have it with his bow.

We fought Bassilus a bit early (level 3). I made a critical error again. I sent the front 2 to melee him, but instead should have ranged Bassilus with those 2 as well. This way get extra hits in AND even if they get held, Bassilus has to move into melee range to hurt them, which gives us even more attacks on him. Instead the 2 melees got promptly held and killed. The party had to leave the 2-hand swords and crossbows behind, though we of course looted the Ashideena and Bassilus symbol (which money we used to buy Joshua's full plate).

Nimbul was very anti-climatic - despite his boots of avoidance, Paja got a critical bow hit of 18 damage - killing him. He apparently did not even get beyond round 1 - he wasn't able to cast any spells as well. I guess enemies who cast horror aren't so dangerous if they are dead before they can cast their 1st spell...

With this group, concentrating all 6 with ranged on enemy mage/archers, then mopping up melees seems to be working well.

Corey the Level 4 paladin with his 5 paladin friends - small update

We explored the area directly south of Nashkel. We encountered an armed band who thought we were berserkers (I suppose a berserker and a paladin can look similar...). The entire party unloaded on the band of two archers and melee with its ranged power. The melee almost made it to our lines, but not quite. The enemy archers can dish it out (we had to heal twice), but they couldn't take it and died pretty fast. In the same area, encountered Vax and Zal. They were outnumbered 3 to 1, so not good odds for them. Bracers of archery went to Corey.

The valley of the tombs (where you exit Nashkel mines at the bottom level) was fun. First up were some amazon assassins who said they were going to kill Corey. What actually happened is the party had protection from evil on the entire party, attacked with ranged power, and fired a single shot from necklace of missiles. The assassins could not survive our onslaught - they did make us heal a couple of times.

We found a tomb with 3 ghasts. We suspected trouble, however and had the entire party had protection from evil up. Turned off AI and auto-attacked. A ghast managed to hold Paja, but it didn't get time to kill her.

Almost immediately we encountered a strange mage playing with mustard jellies. We asked if he would share his wisdom, but he got mad and started a fight. Entire party ranged attacked the mage, he died before he could cast one spell. The jellies were a bit tougher. However, everyone has magic melee weapon, so we just charged the jellies with melee weapons. No deaths and success, though we did need to gulp yet more heal potions.

One more major fight in the area, we encountered a powerful revenant. However, we suspected trouble in the tomb so before we entered we cast PfE on the party.  The ranged party members also used magic ranged ammo. Thanks to Paja IDing the magic darts from one of the amazons, Lily Gene could attack from a distance and still be effective. The Revenant was killed without him inflicting any significant damage on us.

After clearing this area and headed back to Nashkel, our cash was a lot better. There aren't any weapon upgrades we can purchase, and our potion defenses were getting low. So we splurged about 3000 gold on heal potions and lots of antidotes, including 9 elixar of healths.

Still had about 10,000 gold after all of this. So we traveled to Ulgoth's Beard and purchased the greenstome amulet. Still had some good cash left, so we headed to Thunderhammer Smithy and hired him to make us some Ankheg armor.

The party is about 2000 experience each member short of level 5, we will head to the area NE of Nashkel next.

Elie -- Female Elf -- CN Fighter 1 / Mage 1

RIP Elie.  She managed to make it past the Friendly Arm Inn and work her way to the Nashkel carnival, adding to her party (in order)
  • Imoen
  • Ajantis
  • Kivan
  • Branwen
The problem was with an Ogre (no, not the exploding one) on the Carnival map.  Ajantis managed to get himself nearly killed, and since Elie actually had the most hit points (thanks to Mr. Mouser), the best THAC0, and the best AC, I led her into the fray to try to salvage the situation (since I was completely broke).  A few lucky hits from the Ogre and it was time for pushin' daisies.:innocent:

Next attempt?  Elf Wild Mage, IIRC.  Dread wolf took down Imoen, and a wild surge blinded the Mage (Di, IIRC.  Very aptly named).  He never had a chance, and didn't even get off the first map.:innocent:

Next attempt? Half/Elf F/M/C. Imoen died on the first map, and decided to go solo.  Managed to take down Tarnesh, and work my way down south of Beregost.  Actually made it to 2nd level (Thief) with this character.  I got sloppy at this point, mostly because without NPCs, there are no NPC interactions: and that's kind of the point of the BG1NPC mod.  He failed his save against a ghoul (had no ranged weapon proficiencies), and the ghoul casually ripped his helpless corpse into little pieces.:innocent:

Current Attempt?  Del, CG Elf Thief/Mage.  Managed to make it to the FAA with Imoen and took down Tarnesh.  The "shield" spell is remarkable against him.  I plan to follow Elie's path ( add Ajantis, Kivan, and Branwen ) with hopefully better success.  I will post more if he manages to survive to 2nd level.

Lessons learned?
  • Melee + No Reload + BG1 = DANGER WILL ROBINSON!
  • Shield Spell = Good
  • Find Familiar Spell = Great
  • Sleep spell = Great
  • Always, always, always carry healing potions
  • Cat familiar = great scout
  • Fairy Dragon familiar = even better, using Invisibility 10' radius
  • If taking a thief, put initial points into OPEN LOCKS.  The Star Sapphire available in the Inn is a great cash boost early in the game, when you need it the most.
  • 1 spell at first level really, really hurts for a mage.  Either you can choose defense ( Armor/Shield ) or you can choose offense ( Sleep ) but it's hard to get both ( Armor, sleep, find bad guys in the next hour and use Sleep ).  It's good either to have a specialist mage or to go grab the Ring of Wizardry early.

That's true, but the fact that the Dukes still talked to him should have meant that they would still send him to the maze and that he could get in. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there shouldn't be a link between using the spell, and not being able to get into the maze. IMO, probably the Dukes would wait until he'd killed Sarevok before worrying about manslaughter or whatever but regardless, what actually happened in the game makes no sense - he couldn't get into the maze, which seems to be a bug if the use of Chaos is indeed what caused it (Chaos' description states it makes people confused - it does not state that it also seals hidden Undercity entrances).

Anyway, as you say, the point is somewhat moot now.

Condolences After5CST. The lack of spells is the main reason I like to play specialist wizards.

I've just reached the Underdark in BG2 and I would like to carry on with my quad-mage party sometime, but I'm itching to try out BG1 in the BG2 engine. BGT sounds more to my liking, but given I have little intention of going on the BG2 with the same characters (I likely won't finish BG1, and anyway I've only played BG2 once, and to Ch 5) I figured I'd try out TuTu. Here's my new install:

BG1 and BG2 with bugfixes etc installed.
EasyTuTu
EasyTuTu Degreenifier
EasyTuTu Hotfix (A64 saves Beregost)
TuTuFix (parts)
BG2 Tweaks (various parts, mostly cosmetic and convenience)
BG1 Quests and Encounters Pack
BG1 Unfinished Business
The Grey Clan Episode 1
Iron Modder TuTu Edition: "A Rain of Tears" (all four)
Lure of the Sirene's Call
BG1 NPC Project (most parts)
Hard Times
SCS (all AI, most Tactical, various others EDIT: No prebuffing, though)
L1 NPCs (mostly for experimentation - will probably use Shadowkeeper to change NPCs later instead)
EasyTuTu Spawn Randomiser (70%/5 days)
BG2 Tweaks (Unlimited Item Stacking)

Never played TuTu before, never played SCS before (beyond a few components I converted to BG1)... never played a Sorcerer before either.

Enter Aahazn, Chaotic Neutral Human Sorcerer L1
Stats: 18, 18, 16, 14, 10, 10
Proficiency: Small Swords (using BG1-style proficiencies with weapon styles)
Spells: Sleep, Larloch's Minor Drain

After leaving Candlekeep, Aarhazn decided to leave Imoen and go it alone for a bit, then pick her up later. Unfortunately, the first group of Gibberlings he ran into turned out to be six strong, and it occured to me that I didn't actually know what I was getting into. A Sleep spell proved effective and I darted most of them to death, and decided heading back to pick Immy up would be the safer option after all. Unfortunately, the last one (after running around crazily for a while) charged Aarhazn and must have hit on his first attempt for 5+ damage, because a premeture death quickly followed.

Luckily, a death this early on means I can effectively reload, entering with Aarhazn II. Same stats. Same character, really. He just hasn't left Candlekeep yet, nor has he died (yet). Take two.

I agree that if using the Chaos spell directly caused the maze to be sealed that would be a bug, but that didn't seem likely to be what happened.  From Corey's description I think the failure to conclude the dialogue with the duke meant that the maze was never unsealed in the first place and that failure was the result of the duke becoming hostile (which might have been caused either directly by confused characters attacking the wrong thing or indirectly as a result of reputation loss).

However, back to more important things ... best of luck with your new set-up (watch out for those gibberlings).

In my opinion, no-reload of a pure mage is the hardest no-reload possible. A fighter/mage at least can wear full plate until they get more spells/HP under their belt. Acquiring things like belt of piercing and boots of avoidance early are good strategies. Traveling while invisible also is helpful.

For a no-reload at least, would recommend a party to act as meatshields for your mage. Also, depending on your install you might have the ring of wizardry on the ground at Friendly Arm Inn, that would let you mage have both sleep and armor spell memorized.

So after a long hiatus due to a billion things, I am finally back with a new chapter in the Gilded Rose saga. Just to restate, this run was completed proximally 5-6 months ago and I have just been lazy in reporting back the results. There should be 2-3 more updates following this one and then the entire adventure is over :).

The Gilded Rose Part Seven - Werewolf Isle and visiting the Undercellar

After a long rest, our heroes felt refreshed and in high spirits for new adventures. Visiting one of the local houses, they were hired by a strange fellow by the name of Mendas. He wanted some sea charts from the Merchant League to sail to some far distant shore. Shouldn't be too hard to acquire.

Upon arriving at the Merchant League, the Gilded Rose was immediately attacked. So much for a stealthy approach. Sadly, businessmen are no match for seasoned adventures so the fight was over before it began.

While our heroes were in Baldur's Gate, they decided to stop at the Undercellar for a bit of relaxation. They were ambushed by two assassins who spilled their dark little secret: they were going to murder the other Grand Dukes at the crowning ceremony. Mad Man leaped into the fray, but ultimately sustained too much damage. He died on the field. The others fought valiantly against their notorious foes and ultimately succeeded!

With the assassins dead and the sea charts retrieved, Mendas prepared the ship and the Gilded Rose set sail. But a fierce storm shipwrecked our heroes and they were stranded on a strange island. Here they were greeted by strange tribal folk who wanted nothing to do with them.

Left to their own devices, the group decided to explore the mysterious island. They soon discovered that it was overrun by wolfweres!

A Sirene Queen also tried to charm Mad Man, but proved to be quite unsuccessful.

To our heroes' luck, they found the derelict ship of the famous adventurer Baldur! Inside the rotting hull they found more wolfweres and dangerous vampiric wolves. Armed to their teeth and with spells at the ready, the Gilded Rose
cautiously went inside. At the top level they encountered an even greater foe: A Greater Wolfwere. Such a mighty beast proved to be almost unstoppable, but nothing can stop Mad Man once he is lost in his fog of insanity.

Inside the ship the group found Baldur's shiplog which shed light on the situation on the Island. They returned to the village to share these findings, but once again attacked by wolfwere. But they were not the only attackers. The villagers themselves had in secret been werewolves all along and they too attacked the group. Through tunnels underneath the village, our group ran to safety and the promise of a ship capable of carrying them off the island.

The leader of the Werewolves understood our heroes' plight, but could not stand aside. She died along the rest of her pack and our heroes safely made it home again.

Upon returning Mendas was none too pleased by the group's tale. In fact, he had been counting on the heroes' death at the hands of the werewolves! He transformed into the most dangerous werewolf of them all, Loup Garou! Armed with claws of steel and deadly spells, he lounged at the Gilded Rose who were taken by surprise. Through a long and difficult combat, our heroes prevailed and once again saved the day!
