Mini-Update on Alora's Game:

Alora has routed the Bandit Camp. She is now gleefully rummaging through their junk.

I'll write more about the Camp soon. I'll just share a few snippets from her recent adventures now.

Bassilus's family got burned.
Posted Image

Poison foiled his Heals.
Posted Image

Darts ended him
Posted Image

A Backstab and a quick Missle were not enough to stop Malakar's gnomish pal from firing his Haste pre-buff. This battle cost Alora a precious Oil of Speed.
Posted Image

Sleepy Ankhegs don't fight well.
Posted Image

Neither do dead mages...
Posted Image

Alora's cunning plan to stealth into the Bandit Camp didn't quite come off...

Luminoso has finished her adventures in BG1.

In the city she just obtained the tomes - Marek thought an invisibility potion would keep him safe, but missiles were already on their way.  After sneaking through the Iron Throne she was sent to Candlekeep.  Again she took a minimalist route there, but still nearly died.  Normally I use a scroll of magic protection as the easy way to protect against traps, but that doesn't protect against spike trap damage, so I decided to use Luminoso's jelly form this time.  That worked fine against spikes and lightning, but failed to protect against one of the fireball traps.
Posted Image
She had no fire resistance up at the time as I wasn't expecting a fireball trap that bypassed magic resistance.  That seems a bit of a mean trick - I wouldn't have been pleased if Luminoso had gone up in smoke there!

Back in Baldur's Gate she called on Cythandria.  No trouble there, though needed to be a bit careful not to activate the Iron Throne party that was still hanging around just out of sight.  Down to the Undercellars and the joy of facing Slythe with a character that can eat him for breakfast , instead of worrying about the possibility of a vicious backstab ending things.  Luminoso did put up a scroll of magic protection just to make sure that Krystin couldn't try anything funny.

The palace fight was more difficult than I expected.  The plan was for Luminoso to buff up with her spells and take the heat from the dopplegangers, while picking them off with magic missiles and MMM.  However, I was surprised at how easily the dopplegangers hit her.   She had an AC of -8 against them, but they were getting big bonuses for attacking against an unarmoured character and went through her stoneskins and mirror images in 2 rounds.  Luckily she wasn't completely surrounded and was able to run away when she started taking damage.
Posted Image
All the remaining 4 dopplegangers followed her upstairs and, with the extra space available there, Luminoso had no trouble picking them off.

She sneaked through the maze, carefully tiptoeing around the traps, and eventually found herself in the temple.  The plan here was to get Sarevok in a corner and then deal with his minions separately (Sarevok stays where he is when there's no-one in sight).  Things went pretty smoothly:
- Luminoso disappeared on cue.
- Fireballs from a distance accounted for Semaj and Tazok, who stick close to Sarevok, while their skeleton warrior successors were mobbed by summons.
- Angelo was eventually triggered to appear to attack some summons.  He proved to be very good at it, but they kept coming and coming until he finally got tired and lay down to die.
- The only one I was a bit wary about was Diarmid because his arrows can do so much damage.  However, with him left on his own I was happy to pull him out and set more summons on him.
- Last, but not least, Sarevok faced his own ultimate destiny.

During the temple fight, in addition to her own spells, Luminoso used 25 charges from the wand of fire and 30 from wand of monster summoning.  She had plenty of other options in reserve and it wasn't exactly an elegant method of winning the fight, but it was an almost zero risk way to get access to BG2.

One oddity about an earlier fight.  Strange things sometimes happen when dispel magic is cast on a polymorphed character.  For instance it's common for a monster's natural attack (like spider claws) to be dispelled (this is not much of a problem as can be fixed by recasting the polymorph spell).  However, Luminoso suffered a more annoying bug in fighting outside the mine when the haste effect from her boots of speed was dispelled.  This has changed the boots themselves, so bringing another copy into her inventory does not help.  I used shadowkeeper to equip Drizzt's version of the boots, but these are not removeable so she can't swap to other boots (such as grounding) when desired.  I'm not sure if it is possible to repair the original boots in shadowkeeper - anyone know how this could be done (other than by reinstalling the game)?
Edit: it appears not to be the boots themselves that have changed, but something in Luminoso's character file that stops her movement rate being reset.
Edit2: deleting everything from the "affects" tab in shadowkeeper worked and Luminoso is now ready to go on another journey.

Congrats on finishing BG1 Grond0.

On the speed issue, something similar happened to me with Alastria as you may recall. In her case, the Bear form caused the problem.

Each time she equipped the Bear Paws, her CRE file was edited with a movement rate cap. I suspected - but did not confirm- that the problem was related to the SCS Faster Bears component. I was later able to avoid the problem by skipping the Bear form. Perhaps something similar was going on in Luminoso's case?

In any event, good luck in BGII.

Cheers,

A.

Grond, congrats on finishing BGI, great work.

Alesia, I enjoy reading about Alora's adventures. Your tactics is perfectly refined. I often play solo thieves myself, but I have still much to learn :)

Update on soloing human cleric Avorunis:

Avorunis completed all quests available in Candlekeep. After death of Gorion, he travelled to Friendly Arm Inn. He found Joia’s ring, evaded Tarnesh and headed south to Beregost. Avorunis returned Mirianne her ring, killed Marl, fetched book for mage Elvenhair, cleared High Hedge from monsters, returned Perdue her sword, cleared spider infested house and killed Karlat (Command spell followed by Hold Person works wonders).

Posted Image
Avorunis is currently level 4 Cleric with 30HP.

@Alesia_BH
I have noticed problems when equipping bear paws in the past to allow instant shape-change, but I think this issue was something different. There were around a dozen affects shown against Luminoso in shadowkeeper - nearly all varieties of 'destroy weapon', which I think appear when natural attacks are dispelled (which shouldn't be). I hadn't really noticed negative effects from these, although I think I might not have been getting the benefits I would expect from chill touch.

There was also one affect relating to movement rate, which appeared to be setting the rate at a specific speed and thus not allowing modifiers. Not quite sure why this appeared - possibly I took the boots of speed off after their effect had already been dispelled or something like that.

Alora at the Bandit Camp (Or Sorry, I Didn't Mean to Intrude...Actually I Did Mean to Intrude- Just Not Like This!)

Alora's Bandit Camp run didn't quite go as planned. Her intention was to buff, Stealth into the tent, chunk Venkt with a Backstab, and then blast the rest of the principles with the Necklace of Missles while immune to fire damage. Unfortunately, her poor stealth abilities left her exposed and off guard. She recovered nicely though and completed the battle without consuming any high value potions.

Alora buffed with a Potion of Mind Focusing, a Potion of Fire Resistance, a Protection from Fire Scroll, a Potion of Strength, and the Shield Amulet. She kept the Greenstone Amulet and an Oil of Speed at the ready. She then hit the Shadows, and prepared to enter the tent.

Unfortunately, without a movement rate bonus and with a poor approach vector, she was revealed before she could reach the tent. The alarm sounded.

Um...Hi guys...I'm a little lost. Can you give me directions to the Carnival? No? Ok, I'll get going then...
Posted Image

Alora could have stood her ground here and started blasting with the Necklace of Missles. However, her thoughts were on Venkt so she wanted to keep her aura clear in order to time Greenstone activation properly. She was also interested in conserving Missle charges. With those issue in mind, she popped Taugosz with a Dart of Stunning to give herself some breathing room and headed south.
Posted Image

As Alora headed south, the Bandits amassed their troops. Venkt's arrival was signalled by the sound of his pre-buffs firing Alora activated her Greenstone Amulet. When she was surronded, she detonated the Necklace of Missles on herself while immune to fire damage..

Suicide bombing is alot more fun when you skip the suicide part...
Posted Image

With Venkt and the range fighting principles dead, it was just a matter of clean-up now. Around this time,Taugosz's limbs started moving. Alora fed him another Dart of Stunning.

Hold still. I'm not ready for you yet...
Posted Image

In the interest of conserving charges, Alora set the Necklace of Missles aside. And since there wasn't quite enough space for Darts, she opted for stab-n-go attacks with the 0 Speed Factor Dagger of Venom. The Bandit's melee weapons were too slow to connect. Their arrows rarely found a home.
Posted Image

Taugosz fell to Poison. The remaining Bandits were lulled to Sleep with Alora's wand and finished with Darts and occasional Dagger of Venom jabs. This was essentially the end.
Posted Image

The Cloakwood awaits. :)

Best,

A.

@V- Thanks for your comments. I've been having fun with this run. I'm glad you are enjoying it as well.

In keeping with the logic of NPC Alora's build, I allocated her thief skills to Lockpicking and Pickpocketing- ones that I typically set a low priority on. This has forced me to try things I hadn't done in the past.

I've especially had enjoyed making tactical use of her Pickpocketing abilities. You can basically create a weakness in your enemies battle plan, and then exploit it. It's been amusing.

I agree that Sleep is an excellent spell in BG1, but I never find myself tempted to put it in a Sorcerer's book. The Wand of Sleep allows you to cast an effective variant at a lower opportunity cost and is available very early in the game. I haven't found a reason to sacrifice a slot for Sleep.

I tend not to recharge items at stores myself because I find it somewhat cheesy. It is kind of an exploit of the engine, after all. I also tend not to use such items in the first place, because what is the point of having all this nice shiny loot if you go and use it up?

I find Sleep valuable enough early on to justify the opportunity cost; when it finally becomes obsolete in BG2, there are few enough Level 1 spells to really be worth using, anyway.

I think recharging items at stores is entirely legitimate; it's not likely, after all, that all these items with their rich histories going back, on occasion, hundreds of years, would suddenly be utterly and permanently expended and rendered useless by the Bhaalspawn over the course of a few weeks.

I don't know how it is in PnP, but it always seemed to me perfectly reasonable that magic items could and should be recharged (for a price, obviously), and the game engine limitation was the inability of the PC to do it themselves.

Mortix, LG human male Undead Hunter with the BGT party; Imoen, Viconia, Minsc, Edwina, Jaheira.

I can't be bothered to return to Beregost so head into the mine instead. Straight to the bottom where I get charmed. It wears off and I shrug away other spells to cut Davaeorn down. Flood the mine and exit.

The city briefly. Tome of dexterity, ogre mage, Marek and Lothander, Seven Suns, show Edwina and Viconia that Ramazith is evil, loot his tower without fighting minions, get a tome of wisdom for Jalantha Mistmyr but learn of her murderous nature and kill her instead. Kill Larze and then Marek, use the two tomes (Edwina and Viconia) then report to Scar / Eltan.

Iron Throne HQ a bit risky as only 45k xp per person at present. We have some buffs, and are attacked by a group of mercenaries. We lose our main ranged attack with Minsc being flamestruck immediately but we fight back and target their casters. Zhalimar Cloudewulfe almost kills Jaheira but we dispose of him and drop the final caster.
Posted Image

Gardush and the doppelganger are cutting me up and I'm in trouble. We drop the doppelganger but I have to retreat. Edwina is his next target so I return to target Gardush. Then he is doomed, blinded and covered in insects.
Posted Image

Get Minsc raised, sort our inventory out, purchase a couple of items, return the friend of Varci Roaringhorn. A brief series of equipment-enhancing adventures follow before we return to the duke.

He sends us back to Candlekeep, where I learn to cast DUHM, obtain a ring from Koveras and kill Rieltar before being arrested. I manage not to lie to either Ulraunt or Tethtoril and make good my escape into the passageways beneath Candlekeep.

Imoen deals with every trap bar 1 my impatience, 2 damage on our way out while the rest of us pick off doppelgangers, spiders, skeletons, basilisks and Prat.

Duke Eltan owes his life to Edwina and 10' invisibility. A quick detour to hear about Sune is this vanilla or BGT/mod addition;
Posted Image

After some brief entrophy we are off once more. Cythandria is cut down first, then Slythe and Kristin he is so much easier to kill with a party. I have evidence and invitations so we're off to the coronation.

Sarevok attacks and I parry several blows before he pierces my defences. I have to step back but even with standard missiles Imoen and Viconia are able to force him to retreat.

I can understand that point of view.

Understood. I'm a consumable fan, but a lot players prefer to spend their coin on durables. That can work as well of course.

Understood. I find a lot of value at Level 1 so I can't bring myself to sacrifice the slot. MM, Blindness, Spook, ProEvil, and Shield are all useable for me up through ToB. I'm also developing a surprising affinity for Chill Touch- especially when using my melee Sorceress, Alastria.

With different battle plans and buff regiments, I could see not minding punting the slot in BGII for the convenience of having Sleep in your book for BG1.

 Mini-Update on Alora's Game:

Alora has defeated Drasus. She is now prepped and ready to enter The Mines.

I'll post on Drasus and Daevorn soon. For now, just a few shots from Alora's journey through the Cloakwood.

Alora's Ring of Free Action, Pro Poison Scroll, Darts of Stunning, and Dagger of Venom allowed her to turn the tables on the Cloakwood Spiders: they were immobilized and poisoned while she frolicked in their webs.

Yes, it's nice to save Liia from time to time.

Halfling with buckler and Dagger of venom is fun, I usually ditch the staff at that point or save it for Sarevok. Also, will you be saving up for the shadow armour to improve your stealthiness?

I'm glad to see her make it in someones game at least. I don't think Alora is likely to keep her standing...

Yeah. She's been fun. It's a shame there aren't any magical bucklers. :(

The staff is around for backstabbing and blunt damage- she's primarily using the dagger though. 0 Speed Factor + Poison is nice for stab-n-go work: you can attack quick, and the poison slows enemies down.

Will you be saving up for the shadow armour to improve your stealthiness?

We'll see. The Shadow Armor would be nice to have, but it isn't mission critical. Alora has some pretty big ammo/potion bills coming up. Once those are squared, she'll consider the Armor.

The thieves maze is no trouble to us. Rahvin and his crew are silenced literally and figuratively.
Posted Image

I stagger away from this victory, almost dead. Jaheira is sizzling from standing too close to me while Rahvin detonated me. Not a good sign for what is to come, and I consider returning at a later date.

Instead we kill Tamoko, she's tough and again I consider turning back. Imoen removes a pair of snares inside the temple and adds two of her own. We review our weapons and the decisions is mine.

I draw Sarevok out, Minsc dispels his haste then he is doomed, malisoned and commanded. Entangle, insect summons and Melfs head in his direction while I slug it out with Tazok. Angelo has turned up but I'm flame resistant. Then Semaj arrives. Minsc dispels his protections but he releases a flurry of spells and I'm dead had a scroll of magic protection but it wasn't usable as nobody could identify things. Stupid, knew this would happen as soon as he turned up and keep forgetting Sarevok doesn't fight alone in BGT.

Do you ever use Spell Revisions, it makes a lot of low level spells a bit more useful. Such as Infravision is turned into True Strike, giving you +20 to hit (I think) for a short duration, which works wonders with Chill Touch and Ghoul Touch. In fact, I think I may build a touchy-feely mage around a build like this now.

Couldn't you get Kiel's (sp?) Buckler from Durlag's Tower ..... ah, I just remembered it's a good few levels down isn't it? That Love, Pride etc etc fight is really difficult from what I remember. I rmember there being a lot of magical bucklers at theThieves Guild, but I think they were items added in by Rogue Rebalancing.

Tough luck Gate70.  In my installation green scrolls don't need to be identified before use (unlike most items), so you can use them without identifying if you're sure they're from a reputable source..

After an early fall in BG2 I'm remounting the horse as a cavalier.  Paladins seem to be popular at the moment, so thought I would give one a go.

Got that roll very quickly - think it equals my best everPosted Image.  I think paladins are just about the easiest character to get a high roll with, but with the need to keep both wisdom and charisma up it's still a luxury to be able to have a decent intelligence as well.

I think the difference may be at least in part due to your having played a lot more solo characters; for me, Spook is a good, but not must, spell with a party by your side, and PrE is so much more convenient coming from the long-lasting, AoE Cleric version of the spell.

Whatever happened to Alastria, by the way? I seem to recall you retiring her for a bit, but did she actually die after that, or is she still waiting to continue?

Makes sense.

I've started 3 Alastria games since returning from my ~3 year hiatus. The first one ended in Suldanesselar. I was rusty, and forgot Rakshasas spawn if you sleep outside. With the SCS scripting -and no spells- she was overmatched and fell.

After that, I started a pair of Trilogy games with her. The first ended at the Iron Throne when her Boots of Speed unexpectedly failed to effect her. I later learned it was due to the Polymorph Bear movement bug and decided to give her another chance.

In her re-play, she completed BG1. However, I never moved her on to BGII. The save is still on my laptop. I may choose to pick it up at some point. I'm focused on getting Alora as far as I can now.

As for Alora, Slythe and the Duchal Palace concern me. After that, I don't see any major hurdles untill the Underdark. Tougher Abazigal and (perhaps) the SCS Yaga Shura Lair are the obstacles that worry me after that. It would be nice to at least see her hop-skip to the Underdark. We'll see though.

Best,

A.

I don't use missile weapons for tactical reasons to anything like the extent you do so being restricted to throwing axes and daggers is not too much of a drawback - certainly seems a bargain when you get immunity to charm, fear and poisonPosted Image.

Forlorn is well underway having cleared the areas from the Friendly Arm down to Nashkel.  She is now at level 4 and in the middle of Nashkel mine (though about to leave again to get a replacement for a broken axe).  I was pleased that she had an auspicious start - her first attack was a critical to see off Carbos and her second almost as good to dispose of Shank.

Found some screenshots from my first (and only) ever no-reload from about a year ago. I think I may have posted the images on the old forum, but can't remember. May as well post them here! I may even go back to the save since I still have it!

So this my character Serge, I must have forgotten the mandatory character sheet screenshot when beginning a new game, so please forgive me and accept his level 4 character sheet:
Posted Image

So then I remember ditching Imeon and heading straight south to pick up Safana, I thnk Serge may have had a thing for her, Serge & Safana does have a ring to it ...
Posted Image

Went and picked up Vicionia (as always) and headed into Beregost to take out Silke. This was the first time I'd played a Berserker, and for BG1 I was thoroughly enjoying it. It made Safana's quest a lot easier and Silke by the looks of things too! Although Safana died .... which was something I was going to have to get used to from then on.

Posted Image

Went and dealt with Karlat soon after, probably with noting that (I think at least) Safana was modded into a Bounty Hunter which explains the poison.

Posted Image

Must've gone and collected Minsc, Dynaheir and Edwin at some stage then. Dynaheir tells Minsc a bedtime story.

Posted Image

Started the assault on the bandit camp, Edwin is down and Minsc looks like he's going to join him ...

Posted Image

And lo and behold he does. I remember feeling incredibly tense during this fight. I think my only tactic was to spam web, clouds and sleep and kep running away. Looks like it ... sort of worked, we were still alive at least.

Posted Image

Can't tell if we went into the tent to take out the leaders or if they'd already joined the fight outside, either way we were still vulnerable and look who decides to show up.

Posted Image

FML. So Dynaheir is poisoned, with no potions and is nearly dead whilst Safana and Serge are going toe to toe with the two thieves and Viconia is hurling darts at the cleric. This can only end badly.

Posted Image

So some how Safana and Serge take out the thieves although at a cost (their health is terrible), leaving just the cleric alive. So Viconia gets out her mace and charges in, followed closely by Serge, just as the cleric lets off a hold person spell. Bollocks. Thankfully Safana was still mobile but it was Viconia's poisoned dart that killed her off.

Posted Image

After that we stumbled back to the Friendly Arm Inn and resurrect everyone. I think that last fight was what made me put the game to rest. I thought I was doing quite well up until that point. Maybe one day I'll pick up where I left it, who knows ..

Cavaliers are pretty nice. Also, though it's arguably something of an exploit, you can have your Cavalier use and be proficient in throwing daggers or axes. In my last run, I had Ajantis as a Cavalier and though he rarely used his axes, he would have been able to make excellent use of the Boomerang Axe +2.
