 Mini-Update on Alora's Game:

Duke Eltan has been saved. Slythe and Krystin have fallen. Alora is on her way to the Duchal Palace.

Some shots.

Taking no chances with Duke Eltan's life, Alora Stunned and then Backstabbed his faux healer, Rashad.
Posted Image

Before facing Slythe and Krystin, Alora went on a drinking binge.
Posted Image

Slythe weathered a Backstab + Potion of Firebreath opening but fell in Round 2 to a second Potion of Firebreath.
Posted Image

A quick circle up to Kystin's position took care of the Skeletons.
Posted Image

Krystin Honey got Arrow of Dispelling-> Dart of Stunning -> Dart of Wounding. Alora emerged unscathed.

I'm open to suggestions on the Duchal Palace fight- that one worries me...

Nice job Alesia! And with a solo thief as well! Maybe I'll join in once I upgrade my computer's ram. As for now, good luck to everyone playing!

I don't know about SCS Dopplegangers but I'm sure you know about vanila one's quite susceptible to Wands of Fear and Sleep. Or you may lure them to the second floor (the main floor battle pauses at that time) for some place to manoeuvre.

Thanks. This has been an interesting run. Using a clone of NPC Alora (and therefore going heavy on Lockpicking and Pickpocketing) has forced me to approach things differently at times. That's actually one of the primary reasons I decided to do this run.

I figured having Traps (especially Special Snares) to fall back on all the time likely prevented me from making full use of other thief abilities. I think I'll be more effective with Alesia once this run is over.

Maybe I'll join in once I upgrade my computer's ram.

Ok. I hope you'll join in again. :)

Best,

A.

Quick Note on Alora's Game:

Alora and Belt survived the Coronation- no thanks to me I assure you because I did not have a good plan for that battle at all...

If I were willing and able to use Traps -or inclined to lure the Dopes out of the ballroom- it could have been straightforward. As it was, I was drawing at straws a bit.

The initial plan was to go Dispelling Arrows->Invisibility->Backstab on each of the Dopes prioritizing the ones near Belt. I was not enthused with this idea going in because I feared movement and positioning would be problematic. It was.

The fallback plan was to fade, and go Arrows of Dispelling-> Darts of Stunning. That worked. Each Dope that approached Belt got a Dispelling Arrow followed by Darts of Stunning at 4 APR. Belt could then finish them off once they were Stunned.

Here are some pics.

The rapid-fire-backstab plan seemed dodgy. It was. Movement was too difficult and Alora didn't quite have the umph to get one hit kills consistently. Some progress was made, however.

Fade ->Dispel->Stun worked better. Belt and The Fist carved up the Dopes once they were Stunned. Alora didn't need to deal much damage at all.

In any event, Alora is prepped and ready for the Final Confrontation. She'll likely meet Sarevok this evening.

Thanks for the comments Serg. I appreciate it.:)

The SCS Greater Doppleangers are immune to the Wand of Sleep. The Wand of Fear isn't available to Alora.

I'm not inclined to use area transitions in combat. That does work though and I see why others use it.

I know that it's bad karma to derail in here, but i'm looking at a BGT run and am split between an assassin and a Bounty hunter. The game describes their pluses and minusses but what are your takes on them? It's NOT going to be a solo run.

Against an unarmed opponent with the Dagger +2 and a x3 modifier you could roll 4 on the dagger yielding, (4+2+4)x3= 30. A Critical would get you 60. And of course, this doesn't include other possible bonuses.

I think you've got it. No bracers but same bonus for ranged longbow as unarmed, I believe. Also got STR 17 so +1 to damage.
(((4+2+4)*3)+1)*2) = 62

Btw. I happened to stumble upon the "Which Baldur's Gate Character Are You?" quiz recently. Apparently I'm Skie...

I had a look for this, must have picked the wrong one as I came up with Sarevok. :eyes glow:

Congratulations Alesia. I'd choose shadow armour and cloak of Balduran over cloak of protection +2 but fair enough.

Traps don't work too well against the standard doppelgangers in my experience (one transforms first so the rest get a free run). I'm at this point myself and I'm not confident either. Might try your approach, last time I had to run and some followed each time but it's unrealistic to expect the rest to lay off Belt and Liia while charname is away.

@Serg. I never seem to have much luck with wands in this battle, although it might be bad luck or a BGT quirk in my case. Don't think I'd risk a no-reload on it as this is the most risky battle for a solo player in my experience.

@Bomimo. Assassin is OK but bounty hunter can do similar in melee with dagger of venom. The special snares are a lot of fun solo, not so sure in a party.

Nicely done! Makes me want to be a solo Thief now! Maybe Bard instead .... but I do like the idea of non-stop backstabbing!

Why hasn't anyone in the modding community given Liia more staying power?! She's a Mage isn't she? So why is she throwing fists when she could be throwing Magic Missiles?

Edit: Since you're a no-reload connoisseur, what do you think are the best things to consider/do/avoid/make note of when playing through one?
Really want to start one with more success than my last endeavour - I'm thinking two characters that encompass all four main classes - so a Fighter/Cleric + Mage/Thief or a Cleric/Thief + Fighter/Mage or a Cleric/Mage + Fighter/Thief .....
DECISIONS DECISIONS.

Edit2: I'm thinking a Swashbuckler/Mage and a Bounty Hunter/Cleric - ignoring the Fighter aspect altogether.

Del, CG Elf Thief/Mage.  Managed to make it to the FAA with Imoen and took down Tarnesh.  The "shield" spell is remarkable against him.  I plan to follow Elie's path ( add Ajantis, Kivan, and Branwen ) with hopefully better success.  I will post more if he manages to survive to 2nd level.

RIP Del.

It must have been hubris.  Del managed to be modestly successful, reading Wiz 4 / Thief 5, and a good usable party of Imoen, Ajantis, Kivan, Branwen (and a little bit of Xan).  He managed to clear the Nashkel mines, and then work his way up and down the main N/S road, clearing all maps from the northernmost Zombie farms all the way to Nashkel, the Carnival, the Mines, and almost all of the mine exit map.

His party even managed to take down the Amazons with little trouble, wipe out the undead, and kill off (barely) the crazy wizard with the mustard jellies.

And then, while standing around after the end of that battle (and collecting Kivan's things for a trip to the healers), at about 75% health or so, he apparently got too big for his britches.

Random lightning strike.  Instant death.  End of game.  :crying:

Overall, elf thief/mage multiclass was enjoyable.  I can see how it could be a powerful combination, and didn't regret the selection at all.  It did kind of make either his thief skills (or Imoen's) redundant, but that's a minor quibble.

Next entry?  Don't know yet.  I'll think about it today and try something tonight.  My best guess will be berserker/wizard dual class or kensai/wizard dual class.  There are no substitutes for hit points.

That's definitely not fair. The chance of beind struck by lightning is 1/1000000 (google is my friend) and there have been times when I've been in a storm (in BG this is) and been stuck as much as three times! You should definitely reload, it's a stupid game flaw, unless of course the lightning storms across Faerun are 'magically' enhanced to strike mortals. Pfffffffffff

In vanilla BG 1, lightning strikes do no damage. Some mod must change this, After5CST could always uninstall that mod so this doesn't affect him next time. But he did have to reload for a character death, and it wasn't a bug (it's by design). Rules at this point don't have an exception for lightning strikes, or Melicamp, or mis-clicking, etc.

There were also lots of legitimate ways to avoid his fate - wear boots of grounding in storms, turn off the weather, sleep until no longer stormy, etc.

Stoht, CG halfling male bounty hunter.

Back to the city. I purchase some missiles, snare Rashad and rescue Duke Eltan. He's amazed to discover I haven't visited the central sector of the city or any of the three northern sectors either.

Cythandria is next. She's standing on spare snares from my battle with the Iron Throne mercs. I show her mercy but she staggers into another snare and perishes.

Larze gets snares and arrows before I can head to Slythe and Kristin. Four snares drop Slythe, leaving three in the way. I throw another snare towards Kristin and hide as she removes magic from me. I throw another snare and add an arrow as she retaliates with cloudkill. I run away after grabbing a cloak dropped by Quenash.

I ready a potion of absorbtion in case I need it and move in for a backstab. She tries to cast but I'm gone and in the shadows so she gives up. My second backstab kills her.

Now for the duchal palace. I spread my snares out, from just beyond Sarevok to the stairwell. I hide as the attack begins, and backstab one doppelganger. I use arrows of dispelling very effectively then waste my time with darts of stunning. Liia is dead but Belt is sae while the doppelgangers are chasing me. I have to follow one into the basement and backstab it, returning to tell Belt the job is done.

I'm wise enough to stay away from Sarevok and manage to hurl a snare at him. He snarls and escapes with Winski, only for Belt to send me after him. I need more gear so return to Sorcerous Sundries.
Posted Image

Just the maze to negotiate now. A brief word with Winski then time to snare Rahvin. Only Shaldrissa survives so I move away XP now 161k so take final level up. Her mirror images are active so I rest and throw a pair of snares at her. A backstab and two arrows scare her, causing her to run into another snare. Time to rest again.

Tamoko. Four snares are not enough so I retreat and throw a fifth. Yet more rests as I investigate an old temple. I remove two snares and add seven of my own before switching to Gurke's cloak, arrows of detonation and using a scroll of protection from magic. Then I rest a final time before sneaking inside. I missSarevok with an arrow of dispelling so retreat.

As he crashes through my snares I hit him on the second attempt, then hide behind a pillar and switch from bracers archery to gauntlets of weapon skill, and to the dagger of venom.

Sarevok is behind the pillar so I glug a potion of absorbtion and play with his friends. Angelo is first as his arrows are the biggest threat.
Posted Image

Tazok starts collecting arrows of piercing, but I step too far and a battle horror joins in. Semaj is out of spells as I drop the half-ogre.
Posted Image

I glug a potion of regeneration then start on the battle horror with backstabs. Semaj must have badly wounded it because one hit is enough. A second battle horror appears though, taking another four backstabs.

Semaj is next, I get fed up of trying to hide 107% and failing frequently and just kill him.
Posted Image

Sarevok. I glug potions of mind focusing and power dexterity 23 and count the backstabs from injured. The scroll wears off after six backstabs. Lucky number 10 does the job.
Posted Image

I now have to traverse the maze again, and ought to go get some golden pantaloons.

193 kills, Angelo is the "most powerful vanquished". Right, hope I make a better go of it in SOA than last time. Might create another PC to travel with him.

Alora v. Sarevok (Or The Fall of Grumpypuss)

Alora had a sound plan for this fight- she was never really in danger. It felt less like a climax, and more like a way to unwind after the nailbitter at the Duchal Palace. Alora enjoyed herself. And that's good.

Alora went on her standard drinking binge pre-battle.
Posted Image
She approached, and then popped Sarevok with an Arrow of Dispelling- removing his Haste and rendering him tactically irrelevant for the rest of the fight.
Posted Image

With Sarevok neutralized, Alora turned her attention to Semaj. She popped him with an Arrow of Dispelling. And after he returned from an invisibility session, smacked him into the netherworld.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

Alora's buffs covered the spells. Potion of Defense + Girdle of Piercing + Boots of Avoidance+ Cloak of Displacement+ Claw of the Kazgaroth minimized the missle weapon threat. Movement solved the melee weapons.

Diarmid's turn next. His Potions of Extra Healing allowed him to weather four or five solid pops.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Alora dispatched the Skeleton Warrior incarnations before attending to Angelo.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Angelo got Arrow of Dispelling-> Dart +1
Posted Image

Tazok was the biggest pain simply because he refused to reveal himself. He was there just invisible.

Alora bumped into him once and figured out he was near Sarevok. She targetted Sarevok with Potions of Explosions, Potions of Firebreath, Oils of Fiery Burning, Arrows of Detonation, and Necklace of MIssles blast. Tazok was caught in the blast radius each time. When he finally appeared, he was basically dead.
Posted Image

Finally, Grumpypuss. Alora dropped him with backstabbs. She cast Draw on Holy Might before starting the sequence for a little added pop.
Posted Image

And the killing blow.
Posted Image

Fin!

Mini-update on Olansus' progress.

We headed west in search of Brage. I normally take him back to the Temple of Helm, but it turns out that killing him, whilst being a little more difficult, offers more XP (though less gold). I planned on sending Imoen in, stealthed, then fleeing from him whilst she delivered a backstab. His Splint Mail should have made him slower than Olansus, who would then have been free to cast Blindness on him, whilst Imoen switched to poisoned darts.

However, Brage drank a Potion of Freedom, which I think may actually have sped him up. Either way, he got suddenly quite fast. I'd also forgotten to have Imoen equip her sword, so she revealed herself drawing it before she could strike. Luckily, Blindness stuck. The only probably was that Brage then ran away. We couldn't find him, so we rested up. We still couldn't find him, until we ranged a fair way past the caravan site. Blindness was re-applied, and Brage was killed and taken back to Oublek.

An odd note is that Laryssa disappeared in the process. Hmm.

I should mention that we also killed Neira in the inn in Nashkel; the backstab/Blindness/poison tactics worked a bit better here, though again it was really Blindness doing the work. Bjornin's Half-Ogres were taken out with Sleep on the way to the archaelogical site as well, so I should head over and let him know about that, too.

Anyway, Olansus reached L3 as a Mage from killing Brage, and Imoen L5 as an Assassin from getting the reward. I put a few points into Find Traps, which may be enough for the Nashkel Mines, but I'm not sure about taking on the Kobolds just yet. Perhaps we will try to work our way to the Gnoll Stronghold and pick up Minsc and Dynaheir.

Nice work with Stoht Gate70!

I'm sorry to hear the Darts of Stunning didn't work out for him in the Duchal Palace fight. I would have felt bad if that lost time ended up costing Stoht.

I was also sad to hear it because I was hoping that might turn out to be the ever elusive bankable Duchal Palace strategy for a single class thief. Perhaps not...

Good hunting in Amn.

Cheers,

A.

Thanks for your comments everyone. It was a fun run. Let's hope Alora has what it takes in Amn.

I'm sorry to hear about Del After5CST. Lightning doesn't do damage in my install, but I've turned off weather nonetheless because it freaks me out whenever it happens.

corey_russell wrote...

That's a good question. In the intro post for Alora, I noted that people should keep The Foot in mind when evaluating her accomplishments. Now is a good time to reflect on The Foot (as gross as that might sound...).

The short answer is sure: an unkitted Thief is definitely doable sans Foot. You have to remember, Alora has a Strength of 8 and a Con of 12. To a significant extent, The Foot just compensates for her stats.

Aside from the Duchal Palace fight, she was pretty much in control throughout her run. She didn't take meaningful damage in the other main storyline fights. It would definitely be doable without The Foot.

That shouldn't obscure the fact that Alora is actually a very capable Thief. She misses out on the benefits of a high natural Strength and Consitution, but The Foot counteracts that effect and importantly, influences her ranged in addition to melee attacks. Essentially then, comparing Alora to a thief with a high natural strength, you get higher average ranged damage and a better ranged THACO in exchange for maximum melee damage. You also get lower damage from spell effects in exchange for HP max. That's a fair trade. Note well though: when she is buffed with a Potion of Strength and a Potion of Fortitude, she gets her cake and eats it too-she gets the benefits of high Stats and The Foot.

The upshoot of this is sure: a unkitted Thief can solo No Reload BG1. And despite Alora's reputation for being one of the least powerful NPCs in the Trilogy, she's a very capable character.

Best,

A.

AFAIK it's a vanilla BG2 engine thing -- it's just that you're indoors a lot more so you don't notice it as much. I should note that sometimes the lightning does no damage, sometimes is does big damage -- hence my question above.

As you also observed [b]turning off weather disables lightning[/url]. (Which is something I always do since I don't like random unpredictable and unpreventable deaths. It's happened to me at least once during a no-reload.)

Definitely agreed. It's annoying, but not a bug.
