Veene the level 4 Human Thief continues his adventures...

Veene and the gang (Viconia, Imoen, Kagain) decide they are ready to get the gauntlets of dexterity for Kagain. We go from Nashkel to south of Nashkel to start our journey, but then a rather nasty ambush. Four gnolls appear, which isn't too bad, but also 2 ghouls! Keep in mind most of the party is level 2 and Kagain at this point is still level 1. The party tries to take a few potshots at a ghoul, but mostly miss. Kagain keeps two gnolls busy...the girls and Veene run away from the ghouls who give chase and take a shot and run etc. But with our poor weapons and Thac0, we are missing a lot. This is also one of the ambushes with only ONE exit. Veene and the girls get near the exit, then try to run past the ghouls to try to get some more ranged attacks in. Well, Imoen gets held and immediately killed. Great. Viconia and Veene split up, hopefully one of them will get extra attacks in. Kagain tries to help with his darts, but is criticaled by a gnoll and killed -- at the same time one of the ghouls go down. Veene and Viconia continue to run and shoot, ignoring the gnolls who hopefully won't get any criticals in. Finally the ghoul goes down, Veene tanks the remaining two gnolls though he had to do a heal potion. Here is the aftermath of the battle. Fortunately the key equipment we were able to loot, we left the cheap ammonition behind.

We did eventually get the gauntlets of dexterity for Kagain, putting his AC at -3 at the moment.. We battle to the charisma tome, giving to Imoen. We return to Nashkel and sell.

We then head to Beregost to finally deal with the spiders in Landarin's house - no problem at all. We went to FAI to report our success and deal with Tarnesh (who was killed quickly thanks to a Veene arrow critical). The wizard's ring we decided to give to Imoen.

Imoen can cast 4 spells now level 1, including color spray and burning hands, think we are ready to pick up Shar-Teel. We travel via the south side of the Beregost Temple map to the Basilisks area. We hug the edge of the map and find Shar-Teel. The party keeps their distance, Kagain gets close to her and agrees to duel her, and with his first hit THIS happened - that's right he got a critical! Killing her...and since she isn't in our group yet she can't get resurrected. Drats.

Time for a change of plans. I want some more muscle (e.g. carrying capacity), so I end up recruiting Minsc and saving Dynaheir. We don't need to pay to resurrect Dynaheir in ambushes so we had her take a permanent vacation in a lotus petal tent. Minsc was fine with that. Minsc and Kagain starting arguing, pretty viciously...not sure if they will come to blows. I need both of them at the moment, though so we'll press on.

I've been trying to justify whether or not I can honor the spirit of the challenge and still create a non-enchanted returning throwing axe for BG1 at some reasonable cost level ( current thought would be at the same price point as a regular +1 (non-throwing) axe, around 2.5K. )  Perhaps add it to Feldepost's for-sale list if I can figure out how.

You could make your own mini-mod for this quite easily. Even if you just hacked your own game, it should be fine. You can basically play with whatever mods or alterations you want, so long as you say so (thus if you were to complete to challenge with some "super-easy" mod installed, well, you would be able to say you'd completed it but only with that caveat). Anyway, though the original challenge was I believe more or less mod-less, the one thing which *was* allowed was cheating for containers etc. since it's not meant to be an inventory management challenge.

I sometimes think about restarting, but when exported they are the same level as when they were exported, so basically is no good unless I do it immediately after character creation.

I thought there was an option to import characters without items or XP? Possibly that's only for MP, but you could always start an MP game and then copy it over. Alternatively, I don't see why you can't Shadowkeeper out all your XP and items (though if you were a higher level you'd probably have to adjust all your stats, etc). You could, I supposed, create the character again from scrath and SK in the attributes. It's kind of cheating, but since we can all see that's the character you had before, well, mayibe it's technically not the same character but I would have thought it'd be all right. I don't think it's necessary, though.

Chiaro had no problems with the ankhegs.  Initially he engaged them with a bow at range; this meant the ankegs needed a critical to hit.  However, Chiaro did so little damage with his bow that the ankhegs still hit him regularly - no danger involved, but used up quite a few healing potions.  Then he realised that using the staff at extreme range would convince the ankhegs to still spit at him instead of switching to a melee attack and he went through them much more efficiently.  All the ankhegs got him level 5 and 6 and a headstart on the way to level 7.

A fairly boring period followed of picking up mainly low value XP as I wanted Chiaro to get to level 8 (and regain his fighter abilities) before going to the bandit camp.  There was a more exciting interlude when the second assassin ambush occurred.  Chiaro immediately ran away and re-entered the map at a different point.  These SCS assassins are able to track him even when stealthed, but as long as they are within a few feet they don't move so it was reasonably easy to backstab them all to death.  Chiaro kept at the edge of the map in case he needed to run from a spell, but didn't have to.  I did make a mistake when trying to get some fur-lined boots - I hoped that these would be given freely, but Jared wasn't feeling generous and disappeared before being attacked - should have just backstabbed him.

Eventually got the required XP and Chiaro headed for the bandit camp.  Plan A was to go straight into the main tent and backstab Venkt.  However, I carelessly arrived during daylight and his stealth failed when approaching the tent (all points have gone into stealth, but despite 150% in move silently and 130% in hide in shadows he still fails to hide more often than not in daylight).  I thought it would still be pretty easy to use Plan B (beat things up with backstabs), but that was not the case at all.  Quite a few of the bandits had the same ability to track Chiaro in stealth as with the assassins referred to earlier.  However, these ones attempted to get as close as possible to him, which meant he was in real danger of being surrounded by converging groups and backstabbing was impossible.  On to Plan C (to run and use his throwing axe).  That was fine for most of them, but did potentially expose him to Venkt's spells.  However, he stayed at the edge of the map and, when he saved against a blindness spell, got a round of axes off - which were enough.  After dealing with the dozen or so pesky followers, the remainder got treated to a back-crunching session with his staff.  Most of the time his backstabs are around th high 30s in damage - this is by far his best to date.

On to the Cloakwood.  I wanted Spider's Bane in case of spider ambushes, but was a bit nervous about the dangers of getting it.  However, I tried a new tactic (at least to me) here.  Chiaro entered the spiders nest under stealth and quickly found a spot out of sight of enemies to hide again.  Then it was just a case of right-clicking on the location of the treasure to move there without trying to pick it up.  Entering the inventory screen then allowed the items to be picked up without breaking stealth.  I also thought I would post these shots - it's always amused me how all the characters in Baldur's Gate are ambidextrous.
Image IPBImage IPB

Chiaro stealthed through the remainder of the Cloakwood and is currently sitting outside the mines mulling over the best way to get the boots of speed.

Chiaro started life as a wizard slayer - the only magic things he can use are helmets, armour and boots + healing potions.  However, he had no trouble in the end.  An opening backstab softened Drasus up a bit and when he chased Chiaro well away from the other characters he got finished off quite quickly.  Genthore suffered several backstabs, but the 2 mages stayed invisible because Chiaro had a scroll of magic protection up.  Rather than waste time he quickly stealthed down to Daveorn.  He was easy; repeated backstabs saw off the battle horrors and then Daveorn himself was beaten with an axe until he keeled over.

Outside the mine I thought one of the mages might be waiting in the guards room - there was a tell-tale movement of air, but the mage wouldn't appear - until Chiaro's scroll ran out.  An arrow of cold interrupted Rezdan's initial spell and he didn't get another chance.  I didn't know where the other mage was and didn't try to look for him.

In the city Chiaro dealt with Ramazith and picked up the other tomes, eagle bow and helm of Balduran.  The only moment of danger was in facing Marek. Marek went invisible and then cast a spook spell from behind a pillar - he could obviously see Chiaro, though not vice-versa.  I virtually never play with the sound on, but that's the sort of occasion when it would be handy.  Marek spent most of the time while Chiaro was running round buffing himself, but Chiaro did have to withstand a chromatic orb just as he came to his senses.  The Iron Throne was even easier than usual thanks to Chiaro's ability to hide as soon as he traversed some stairs.  One odd moment was when a message suggested that Diyab was about to cast a detect invisible spell - odd because he had been the first one killed and only Gardush was alive at that time.

Chiaro avoided all combat at Candlekeep.  He didn't have the strength to rescue either tome, but did crack open the tomb with a scroll of magic protection in - so it was worth using up one of these to get past the traps there.  I was tempted to take on the party there (to get hold of a magic throwing axe), but that wasn't essential and discretion won out on this occasion.  Back in the City Cythandria was next for the chop.  She appeared to have quite horrendous bonuses with her MMM - getting +9 to the roll, even though Chiaro had a -10 adjustment against missiles (I suspect the MMM must not have counted as missiles for this purpose).  However, that didn't help her much.

On to the Undercellar to deal with Slythe & Krystin.  Slythe wasn't doing enough damage with his backstabs to be much of a danger - Chiaro had not used any potions of extra-healing yet in the game and had plenty available to keep HPs topped up.  However, Slythe did cause a bit of distraction and one spell from Krystin got uncomfortably close to landing - good job Chiaro only had to move about an inch to get through the door!  Eventually Slythe got beaten down and Krystin got the treatment with throwing axes.

Next up will be the fight in the palace.  Chiaro has no defense against the dopplegangers confusion touch, so will need to drag them upstairs and deal with them where he can use his mobility advantage.

Chiaro failed at the final hurdle.  The palace fight was simple - the dopplegangers docilely followed him upstairs and either his speed advantage or his stealth ability would have easily been sufficient to deal with them there.

After stealthing down to the temple Chiaro's plan was to use exploding arrows from range to deal with Diarmid.  However, he only had one scroll of magic protection left and didn't want to use it initially as that would prevent the 2 mages becoming visible.  In due course Angelo appeared and Chiaro set off for a pillar to hide again.  He should have had plenty of time to make it, but unfortunately Diarmid hit him with a poison arrow and the jerks caused by that damage slowed him down considerably.  As a result Angelo launched a domination a split-second before he got into hiding.  Chiaro quickly equipped the Claw of Kazgoroth to improve his chances of surviving this - but without success.

I still think the basic plan was a good one, but the execution was poor.  I think it would have been quite possible to use the pillars to hide in such a way as to avoid Angelo appearing until Diarmid was dead - even if unsuccessful with that being closer to the pillars initially would have let him hide safely when Angelo did appear.  Chiaro could also have used a protection from poison green scroll - he had 2 so there would have been no problem about the first being dispelled by subsequent use of scroll of magic protection.

Veene the level 5 human thief continues his advantures...

Veene and the gang (Kagain, Minsc, Viconia, Imoen) have been doing well for the most part, with only a few setbacks here and there. We finally saved enough for both the necklace of missiles and reserve cash in case resurrections are needed. With that purchase, we headed into the depths of the Nashkel Mines. Unsurprisingly, both Kagain and Minsc tanked very well here. We traveled directly to Mulahey -- we used the necklace of missiles on both groups of kobold commandos.

As for Mulahey himself, Viconia managed to hold him so that spelled the end of him and his goons. We picked up Xan and headed outside. An ankheg showed up who the party managed to kill without casualty. Minsc will carry the carcass for a while. We arrived at the carnival, sold our junk, rested, and bid Xan goodbye. We won't see him again unless possibly Imoen gets chunked.

We then headed to Nashkel to report the good news to the Mayor. As expected, Kagain called the party a bunch of chumps - he's not liking our 14 reputation. I'll drop the rep once I can afford the shadow armor, but that's still a ways away. We encountered a bard assassin named Nimbul - Viconia cast hold person (saved), Veen LMD via Bhaal power, and Imoen LMD via spell. Wasn't in time though, Nimbul got his mirror images up. The party just whacked away, and Nimbul hurt Kagain a little then fell.

We then dealt with Tranzig, using just our weapons. The robe of the good arch magi is way out of our price range, so instead, we headed to the Xvart village to get the bracers for Imoen. The xvarts weren't too much a problem as long as they were fighting our tanks. We encountered a "merchant" named Borda who was selling scrolls far too cheap - 25 gold for a magic protection scroll? It would probably kill me. We confronted him about it, and he responded by attacking. Kagain ate a bunch of magic missiles but using all his heal potions and Viconia's healing was enough to keep him alive until Borda could be taken down.

The party was getting tired, and we had just a few spots left in our inventory. We tried to rest but 10 xvarts appeared. Imoen doesn't have sleep yet, so this was quite a problem for our casters. Eventually they were slain with Imoen running around. We tried to sleep once more, but once more 10 xvarts appered. This time Imoen got gang-banged by 5 xvarts and was actually trapped by party members and xvarts and couldn't flee. With her death, leaving the swords behind of course to take her stuff with us to the Temple to raise her. She definitely dies the most in the party, but nothing unusual for my mages.

A lot of areas still left to explore. High Hedge and the area south of it got Viconia to level 5 - sirines now possible. Every one's a long way from leveilng, so will save that for later. Minsc got a measley 2 points for his HP at level 4 - this seems to happen a lot when I use him in BG 1 for some reason.

party status:
Kagain - level 4 fighter, 45 HP, +1 battle axe
Minsc - Level 4 Ranger, 29 HP, Greywolf's sword
Viconia - level 5 cleric, 33 HP, +1 sling
Veene - level 5 thief, 34 HP, short bow
Imoen - level 2 thief dualed to level 4 mage, 23 HP, short bow

Sorry to hear, Grond0. Best of luck with the next run.

Sylvia enlisted Coran into the party easier than expected - using invisibility, she snuck past almost all the enemies in Cloakwood. Coran used stealth and despite triggering a web trap in the spider area, the two made it to the wyvern nest unscathed.

Battle strategy was to lure the wyverns one by one out of the nest - which worked fine. They got hit a few times but never poisoned. So off to collect the reward, and now Sylvia and Coran are ready to take on the mines.

Coran F/T 5/5

In my set-up, if one wyvern comes they all come. :(

I used to use that sort of tactic, but one of my mods must be giving them a bit more intelligence.

In the unmodded game, I would make one of the larger wyverns block the way to my characters and then pick off the small ones with ranged fire. This was followed by killing the big ones with ranged fire. A bit too easy.

I'd still like to try a wizard slayer dualled to thief in BG2, so have rolled up a new attempt.  Chiaro's other half is called Scura.  Here she is on exit from Candlekeep.  One significant difference is that she took mastery in staff to begin rather than axe.  That will make her less effective as a fighter, but cut down later on all the inventory swapping I was doing with Chiaro when preparing to backstab.
Image IPB
This time I deliberately prioritised getting maximum strength - the reason she's somewhat lacking in wisdom.  I'm planning to indulge in a bit of cheese in the pirate's cave to get her thief levels up quickly after dualling, so (with luck) the game shouldn't take too long.

A mini-update on Tamakashi's progress:

Tamakashi dealt with Karlat in the Red Sheaf. The guy's armour made him slow (really slow, considering it's just chainmail), and Tamakashi is fast. Enough said; in BG1, speed is everything.

This allowed him to collect Perdue's reward and complete the Slime quest for over 1k XP.

I then headed north to kill the Coast Way ogre - Tamakashi is still vulnerable to missiles, despite his awesome Matrix moves. However I accidentally clicked on travel to High Hedge so I rested there and finally got to kill a Ghast for a lovely 700 XP (actually I had to flee the first one because of Cave Bears, but I went back, cleared out a couple of Gnolls, and took down a different one).

The Xvarts on the Coast Way proved a nuisance, doing quite a bit of damage, so Tamakashi fled. I'm thinking getting to Nashkel for the healing power might be more important than getting the belt, but I'm wary of bandit encounters. Either way, Tamakashi is close to L4, so Noober and the ogre should give him all the XP he needs.

Update for Scura.
- She went straight after Shoal the Nereid - instant level 4 and 27 more HPs!
- High Hedge for Perdue's sword.
- Beregost to return sword, kill Karlat, pacify Marl, scroll for Mirianne.
- Firewine Bridge to kill Bentham for his scroll of magic protection (also wanted to reduce reputation in order to get drain life as a Bhaal power).
- Firewine Plains - tried and failed to save a cow (lack of the instant kill available with a throwing axe costly there).
- Nashkel - dealt with Neira, talked to Noober.
- Carnival - exploded an ogre, chastised a mage, punished a would-be-pickpocket.
- Nashkel mines - led Greywolf (who would have provided level 5) too close to flaming fist guards and they pinched her XP.  Clearing top 2 levels and first half of the third got her to level 5 (and 13 more HPsImage IPB) before tackling the shaman.  Dragged him all the way back to the entrance to be able to fight him safely, but he disappeared when Scura retreated to the second level briefly so she left him and pressed on to Mulahey.  Retreated and rested outside the cave twice (to prevent the inside exit from being blocked by bodies) in order to safely dispose of him.
- Back at Nashkel I considered leaving Nimbul, but decided I wanted his boots for the bandit camp.  Again this battle took a while - Scura staying next to the inn to draw out his spells and only finishing him off when he came into melee after his throwing axes were gone.
- Dealt with Tranzig and some spiders in Beregost before heading up to Friendly Arm.  Ambushed by Molkar on the way, but just ran away from him.  At the inn got some pantaloons and returned Landrin's goods and then travelled to the bandit camp.  Probably won't stay on this visit, but I want to see how easily the bandits hit Scura while she's only got boots on - could also buy Claw of Kazgoroth to improve missile protection.

After a brisk start I've become much more cautious with Scura in handling dangerous encounters - her HPs are so good that I'm feeling a bit protective of her.

Update for Scura.
- the bandits at the camp were indeed hitting too easily so Scura went to High Hedge - she had just enough for the Claw with a few acid arrows thrown in for Venkt.
- unfortunately on arriving back at the camp the amazons were waiting.  I would have preferred to avoid them, but that wasn't possible as they would follow me round the camp.  In the initial exchange Scura killed one of the clerics before fleeing the map.
- on her return she was commanded and only woke up just in time to run away.
- after several more attempts she managed to kill Lamalha after her magic resistance kicked in against a blindness from Venkt and on the same encounter got rid of Maneira and Telka after saving against Glitterdust and Venkt wasting time on summoning monsters.
- next trip Venkt's mirror image was disrupted and he died without casting another spell and that just left a clean-up operation on all the bandits. That was accomplished without trouble - getting level 6 on the way for another 9 HPs (actually 7 with the Claw on) and getting an armour upgrade from Taugosz (who surprisingly was not equipped with a helmet).
- clearing the ankheg area got most of the XP needed for level 7 and a bit of sundry clearing up allowed her to dual to a thief.

I was originally intending to be cheesy as a thief and get most of the XP needed to regain fighting abilities by resting in the pirate cave and killing golems.  However, as Scura has done so well with her HP (die rolls of 48 out of a possible 60 for her levels) I want to maintain the integrity of the character so will only be gaining XP through normal encounters.

Update on human cleric Avorunis:
Accompanied by Imoen, he explored the underground of Durlag’s Tower. Imoen removed traps, Avorunis took care of fighting:

Image IPB

At the entrance to continuously fireballed room, I mistakenly moved Imoen too close to the entrance and she was hit by next fireball. On maximum difficulty, she was instantly chunked.

Image IPB

Avorunis had to clear third level without thief support, but fortunately, that was not much of a problem, since there are only few traps which can be easily evaded.

Image IPB
Image IPB

In the fourth level, Avorunis defeated all monsters and answered all the riddles, but to obtain sling +3 hidden in the chest with lethal trap, he had to return to surface and recruit another thief - Coran. Unfortunately, Coran died (permanently) during the attempt to remove that damned trap (I forgot to give him potion of perception).
I had to recruit the third thief in row - Safana and she finally removed trap on the chest containing sling +3. Fight with Demonknight was easy – skeletons blocked his way, while Avorunis pelted him with +2 bullets, until DK fell.

Image IPB

Thus, Durlag's Tower took lives of two thieves, but Avorunis himself emerged unscathed.
Back in Ulgoth’s Beard, Avorunis defeated all the cultists and killed Aec’Letec himself.

Image IPB

This was long and difficult fight, but clerical buffs and skeleton army helped a lot Image IPB

FINAL update on human Cleric Avorunis:
Time has come to confront Sarevok. Avorunis protected in Sanctuary sneaked through the Maze to the Undercity. He was forced to kill Tamoko, entered Father’s temple, killed two Battle Horrors using Wand of Heavens and carefully examined battlefield.

Image IPB

Buffed with spells, scrolls and potions, he engaged Sarevok in conversation.

Image IPB

In response, Semaj teleported near Bhaal’s symbol on the floor and the battle started. Avorinus dispelled Haste and other buffs of his enemies. Semaj managed to cast Chaos on Avorunis, but soon he was killed by summons and the Chaos harmlessly wore off.

Image IPB
Image IPB

Next, Avorinus killed Angelo. Thanks to Protection from Fire, Angelo’s exploding arrows did very little damage.

Image IPB

Killing Tazok and Sarevok was then only matter of time, since Avorunis was hasted via Oil of Speed and his enemies were not. Soon, the battle was over.

Image IPB

Avorunis completed vast majority of all available quests, defeated all difficult monsters and enemies and survived playing solo (with the exception of Durlag’s Tower, where he used the thieves for traps removal) on maximum difficulty.

Final Stats: level 8; 64HP; STR19; DEX19; CON16; INT6; WIS21; CHA4

Nice run VaclavcImage IPB.

Scura has just arrived in Baldur's Gate.  Her XP after dualling came from:
- lady with a son threatened by worgs.
- talking to a dying Prism (level 2) and returning an emerald.
- reporting success at the mines to the mayor (level 3).
- returning Samuel to the Friendly Arm.
- returning a bowl to Tenya (level 4).
- beheading a skeleton prior to successfully reviving Melicamp (level 5).
- finding a book for Firebead, avenging Bjornin, used protection from undead scroll to loot valley of the tombs (level 6).
- proved the arrow is mightier than the sword against a braggart.
- found a spare pair of boots in Ulcaster (but Zhurlong was not interested in them), taught Silke a lesson, cleared the Cloudpeaks areas & the gibberling invasion area (level 7).
- Cleared Brage area (except Charleston Nib would not talk), practiced backstabs on the flesh golems in the pirate cave, killed a few basilisks (Scura doesn't need green scroll for the catacombs as she can stealth).  That gave level 8 and recovery of her fighting abilities.
- Bought the martial staff and then headed for the Cloakwood.  Stealthed through that, just picking up Spiders' Bane on the way (which immediately saved her from a spider ambush).
- Drasus was dragged far away and beaten up.  Genthore was backstabbed.  The mages were left alone while Scura stealthed down to Daveorn.  He never stood a chance - protected by scroll Scura backstabbed the battle horrors and then beat up Daveorn.  Scura didn't bother with the mages outside the mine as she's got enough money for her needs anyway and just travelled straight to the city.

Wow, nice work guys.

Another mini-update on Tamakashi's run:

I realised that Noober alone would provide enough XP to get Tamakashi to L4, so I headed down to Nashkel and did just that. Then I travelled a short ways north and rested until I got the first dream (also got Lord Foreshadow's Ring of Overpoweredness, too), healed up, and rested again. Tamakashi now has 33 HP, max, and an AC of 2, which is respectable; I expect he's still going to be relying on his darts for a while, though.

I headed back to the Candlekeep crossroads and picked up Imoen. Slightly annoyed that she has only ~5k XP, but then Tamakashi has only ~6k and she needs less to reach L5. I could probably actually have gotten a bit further solo (certainly if I risked the Bassilisk area, but it's a bit dodgy solo under SCS, and with darts too); killing the ogre and getting the belt should have helped protect me from High Hedge's skeletons, and Melicamp should be straightforwards to rescue then. If I didn't get unlucky with him, that's bump me a good way on. There are also a couple of other little things I could do, like Gurke's cloak and the babysitting. However, I need 7k XP and I figured I'd just play it safe.

Imoen is a L4 Swashbuckler with 80 in Find Traps, 70 in Open Locks, and 24 HP. At L5 I will spread a few more points into each and dual her to a mage, as before. Then we'll probably pick up Khalid and Jaheira and progress through like that. All things being equal, that shoudl get me up to the bandit camp with few worries, and hopefully back up to where my last run ended outside the Cloakwood Mines.

Veene the level 6 human thief continues his adventures...

@Vaclavc: Congratulations on taking down Sarevok!

The party (Kagain, Minsc, Viconia, Imoen) continue to explore/battle on the Sword Coast. We are exploring the areas immediately next to the main roads and southern areas. Battles of note:

* Bassilus - the party had 10 skeletons probe Bassilus position, then Bassilus talked to Kagain and then the party opened fire (all ranged). Bassilus still managed to get a spell off with everyone on him, and he cast a hold person and targeted...a skeleton -- what a noob. Needless to say, with that kind of genius targeting, he didn't survive. Once Bassilus went down, Minsc and Kagain entered melee to finish off Bassilus' help.

* Sendai battle (a.k.a the Vengeance ofr Mendoon) - we again had skeletons to distract the enemies -- however Minsc with his -2 AC was still being chewed up by their arrows, he used up all his heal potions, but fortunately the party did prevail, avenging Mendoon's death, the first incarnation of my human-thief-who-hopes-to-dual-to-cleric-in-BG 2. Supposed it helped too I didn't let Imoen cast stinking cloud this time.

* Amazon battle - the party attacked with strictly ranged fire, skeletons acted as targets, and Imoen cast a web to insure the amazon's defeat. I definitely wasn't going to take chances here, they are dangerous. The rest of the map went almost without incident -- however the crazy mage's jellies almost killed Minsc he AGAIN went through all his heal potions, but Viconia kept him in one piece. These jelly mustards got Minsc to level 5 and Veene to level 6.

Veene finally got his shadow armor. He wears the belt of piercing and fire resistance ring though, just to be safe - don't want either Kagain or Imoen killing him with a badly aimed fireball. The party still needs lots of gold though, still have to save up for full plate for Minsc and robe of the good arch magi for Imoen.

Party Status:
Kagain - level 5 fighter, 54 HP
Minsc- level 5 ranger, 35 HP
Viconia - level 5 cleric, 33 HP
Veene - level 6 thief, 40 HP (this is good for a thief, pleased with his rolls thus far)
Imoen - level 2 thief dualed to level 5 mage, 27 HP

Diary of truestaff and sneaky continued.

Day 130
After completing the mines, we wandered around Baldur’s Gate helping others and ourselves. We then went off to Durlag’s Tower (Ostensibly to find and return a dagger, but actually to answer a question someone had about the tower). We had just killed some wyvern when we decided to head back out and aid the flaming fist against the iron throne. Once we had the required info, we did everything that there was to do at Candlekeep and headed back to the gate.

All in a day's work, huh?

Well, Tamakashi moved through the Coast Way, collecting the belt as he went. We actually ran into a bandit ambush just previously, which resulted in Imoen having to glug a potion (they all targetted her, but there were only four of them). Luckily both she and Tamakashi have an AC of 2, so they're not the easiest to hit in the world.

Once at the FAI, we returned Joia's Flamedance Ring. An odd point to note is that all the hobgoblins were dropping some mod-added Potions of Refreshment, which claim to duplicate the benefits of resting (including restoring spells). Though we have no spellcasters at the moment, I can imagine these being *grossly* overpowered by the endgame, particularly given each hobgoblin dropped 3 of them. They do have a chance of causing a Str, Con or Dex penalty as a side effect, but if they prove to be too much (which I think they will) I'll probably dump them or at least sell them. I'm fine with mod-added items, even when they add a bit of an advantage, but these sound silly.

I'm thinking I'll actually have to re-do my install. The whole movement speeds thing is back the where it was, with me having to fix NPCs with Shadowkeeper, but worse all the armour descriptions have somehow got screwed up and replaced with NPC banter lines. To top it all off, the ToBEx console keeps complaining that certain 2da files are missing, though everything seems to be working fine.

Final update for Scura.

She did the usual chores in the city - obtaining tomes, eagle bow, helm of Balduran.  Only incident of note was that Marek surprised Scura with a chromatic orb minor sequencer and she had to save against it rather than safely disappearing down the stairs.  Candlekeep was a bit of a non-event as she just stealthed through there.

Back in the city Cythandria provided a lead and Scura sought out Slythe and Kristin.  I nearly always play fair with them and let them get the first blow in - but not this time.  Scura opened with a backstab and Slythe died before he could turn invisible.  Kristin was left to mourn on her own as Scura went to the palace.  The dopplegangers caused no problems after Scura lured most of them upstairs, although she had to search briefly to find the last one hiding frightened in the cellar.  The level up indicator on her by the way is the result of my XP cap mod not working with dual classes, i.e. she has 161,000 XP in her second class.  I'll use shadow keeper to get rid of the excess before transferring to BG2.

Scura stealthed straight down to the temple and this time there was no reprieve for Sarevok.  She started with a dispel magic arrow from stealth on Sarevok, just in case he became active at some point.  Then she poured in exploding arrows, each time immediately retreating behind a pillar to re-stealth.  This quickly accounted for Semaj (the resulting skeleton warrior then fell to backstabs).  Tazok and Diarmid went the same way before Angelo deigned to make an appearance.  This time Scura had stayed close to the pillars and had plenty of time to disappear before Angelo got a spell off.  Angelo got beaten up hand to hand by Scura under protection from magic scroll and finally Sarevok discovered that chasing a character with stealth round and round a pillar is a baaad idea.  The only thing that didn't go exactly according to plan was when backstabbing a skeleton Scura forgot to switch to her staff and got caught in her own explosion!

Veene the level 7 human thief continues his adventures...

The party continues to make progress. All areas up to Beregost and straight east of it have been explored. Safana's ara is our next target area.

Some incidents of note:
* Doomsayer battle - The party prevailed, though it did take a lot of shots of Imoen's frost wand, using it up in the process.
* Poe - we wanted his magical spear. Tried to pickpocket it a lot of times but failed. Eventually we just charmed him and sent him on a suicide run via skeletons and picked up his spear. No rep loss that way.
* Algeron - even though Imoen succeeded at pick-pocketing his cloak (not bad for her only being 45% PP) we still killed him - this drop our rep from 18 to 10 - people stopped complaining about heroes now...
* The Mighty Kahrk - took no chances, had masses of skeletons and a monster summoning charge attack him and the party attacked with ranged power. Imoen's dispel magic proved unfortunate for Kahrk.
* In the Basilisks area we met a rather insulting party led by Kirian, a bard I think. In any case, they were defeated by the party minus Kagain (Kagain was basilisk hunting) with 2 fireballs and a hold person.

Bad news....
* Sirine's area (not the one with the tome, the other one with Droth the Ogre-Mage). Somewhat suprisingly, this area had a disaster in store, and a near disaster. We met Shoal and when Minsc got kissed by her it killed him. She resurrected him, but when Droth appeared and we sent the party to attack while Minsc looted his eqiupment (my game unpauses when in the inventory screen). While looting his stuff, I didnt see that Kagain got CHARMED! And Kagain, taking out his disapproval of Minsc, promptly chunked him! This was horrible I need Minsc's strength. I recalled that Kivan will fight with Viconia, Ajantis doesn't fit an evil party, Jaheira and Khalid have left town, Shar-Teel is also dead thanks to Kagain. I don't want more vulnerable mages, so that nixes Xan, Edwin, and Dynaheir. So my only choices, at the moment, are either Safana or Garrick. I'd prefer an evil/neutral fighter of some kind, but none available. So will use Safana for now, with the idea of maybe Coran can help our melee needs once we get that far.

The near disaster happened when we fought a sirine down south part of this area. She charmed Veene - killing the Sirine was no problem, but our mass of skeletons was starting to kill Veene! Veene started to peg Imoen so she tried to run away, only to find two ghouls joined the party. The party members started killing the skeletons as Viconia was out of heals. Imoen then got held off-screen by a ghoul - the party somehow managed to kill the ghoul in time, Imoen had a shred of life left. Veene also had a shred of life left (maybe 8 HP) - finally his charm wore off and the skeletons called off their attack of him. Good thing Veene's AC is good enough that the skeletons mostly only got hits off criticals.

This is what I call narrow escape :D
It is good that Veene survived such dramatic and memorable battle.
