I went through Firewine with problems. Used the wand of summoning and the necklace of missiles and many healing potions to get through all the kobolds, but in the end noone was really dying. The Ogre Mage that I killed after going through the halfling house was easy, but some of the kobolds that were around and the other mage were troublesome and took me to low health.
I took a few thoughts before tackling Kahrk (the Ogre Mage) on the surface. I finally settled with using a protection from magic scroll which I got from Bentans corpse in the same area (probably it was put there in the game for the exact measure to face Kahrk). I was a bit stupid to first buff my main protagonist Ninoe with spells and potions and then use the scroll.... which of course nullified all effects... argh! I fought Kahrk with her alone while my mage (Dynaheir) used the wand of summoning to aid her with wolves. The battle was a challenge when Kahrk shot a lightning bolt across the screen through the wolves and towards my party, but they all made it safely, happily enough.
Then I started to tackle most areas on the Western part of the Coastway except for the area with Drizzt. I took a serious drop in reputation when I decided to kill everyone in the Digsite for stealing the contents of the site and take the extra gold from Gallor, but I killed Gallor for bribing me into doing it. The Doomsayer was not very difficult when I buffed both Ninoe and Kagain with potions of strength (I think I took one with 19 and one with 20). I got some back some reputation I think when I killed Bassilius (or was it when I killed Brage or cured Melicamp?).
I am currently outside the High Hedge, with ~11000 gold, nothing I really want to buy yet and the party of Ninoe (fighter, to be a druid in BG2), Kagain, Imoen, Dynaheir, Branwen and Garrick. Vacation time should allow me to play at least to finish the non-City areas fully before continuing. I am hoping to hire other party members, but I am uncertain which ones I would like to use... Maybe I'll hire Safana for Imoen and Kivan for Garrick and perhaps Ajantis for Kagain... just because I still can

I've installed BGT, SCS (all AI and Encounter improvements, and some of the ease of use components - however, even though mages and clerics may use BGII spells, they do not prebuff), Hard Times and Item Randomiser. Since this is my first time using all of these mods but BGT, I'm not sure how long I will last. This run will be played on core rules.
My character is Arinja, an elven chaotic good Wild Mage. Her familiar is a Faery Dragon.
Her stats: 11/19/16/18/3/18
Arinja completed all the minor quests in Candlekeep and started her travels. After defeating some gibberlings together with Imoen, Montaron and Xzar joined the party. The group managed to arrive at the Friendly Arms Inn, where Montaron and Imoen successfully backstabbed Tarnesh - 12 damadge by Montaron with his shortsword due to a critical hit. Jaheira and Khalid joined the party, Xzar and Montaron were dropped.

On the road, there was a short fight with a sleeped Dread Wolf and an Ogre. Nothing too difficult with ranged weapons and a lot of running around.
In Beregost, the group accepted some quests and fought the Spiders. Sleep worked well on two of them, and the others only managed to hit the faery dragon, who, luckily, was not poisoned. Marl was calmed, and a book was delivered to Elvenhair. Also, I bought a sling +1 for Jaheira.
Arinja went for a short trip to the High Hedge and added Kivan to her party.
On the road further south, after dealing with some Orgrillions, the group ran into a Hobgoblin Camp, but with Kivan in the party, the monsters were defeated rather quickly. Also, level up for Imoen!
Far more interesting was the encounter with the Bounty Hunter Cleric in Nashkell. Luckily, everytime she tried to cast a spell, a single hit came through and stopped her spellcasting - Jaheiras Blessing helped a lot, certainky. Also, the bounty hunter dropped bracers of AC6 for Arinja.
In the place where there is a free ankheg armor in the vanilla game, the group found an Energy Ring (I wonder why Hard Times didn't remove this location at all when it did with all the other free gifts). This will certainly be of use later on. Another reputation +1 from confessing not to be Greywolf.
For the sixth party member, Arinja decided to pick up Branwen and bought a stone to flesh scroll at the temple of helm. Branwen used Remove Fear, and the group entered Zordrals tent. The first "real" encounter with an SCS mage for me, since Tarnesh was backstabbed. The fight began pretty good and I got some hits in before the mage managed to cast Shield and Mirror Image. I was using some of my own divine magic against him, but he kept making his saving rolls. However, even though he managed to successfully cast dispell magic and recast mirror image, he didn't get one of his offensive spells out before dying due to the massive amount of bullets, arrows and darts thrown at him.
A robe for Arinja, yay!
The Wild Mage also bought the two potions and identified some stuff to sell it. There will be enough opportunities to spend the money. Now that the party was complete, they travelled back to FAI to finish the Ogre and Spiderquests.

I bet that's from Item Randomizer. Hard Times takes it away, but Item Randomizer replaces whatever was there with something else. In my non-no-reload game I found the pearl and something else (not Energy Ring or ankheg armor) plus a broken weapon.Enuhal wrote...

Not knowing the level of the SCSI mages prevented Arinja from getting some more experience in Beregost. I accepted Garricks Quest and tried to fight Silke, but as soon as she used both Mirror Image and Stoneskin (I didn't know she could cast 4th level spells), I decided to retreat (which, I guess, was a good decision). Even though her Script was pretty good and she always followed me, I managed to escape - she only got off one magic missle at my Fairy Dragon, who, at that time, luckily had an active Mirror Image. I shall return to the village when I think I'm ready to face her again.
The group instead went to find Melicamp, bringing him to Talanthyr. Sadly, the chicken died, so no experience for me. Oh well. The group explored the area south of Beregost completely, getting some experience, 5 healing potions and the Boots of Stealth in the process.
Back in Melicamps Area, Arinja had her first experience with a Wild Surge. Instead of casting a sleep spell on the two wolves, she turned into a wolf herself - very fitting. This proved to be pretty effective, by the way, as she got -4 AC and 4 APR, because this wolf form is considered hasted. Sadly, her THAC0 was still 20.
Further to the south, the group met a Bandit, Hobgoblin Elite, Dog and the three named Hobgoblins. Khalid had to use a potion of antidote. The group managed to pull Zargal without his two companions, making it easy to Command him and kill him, even though he used an oil of speed. The Item Randomizer gave me a Great Shield +1 - even better than the +2 Short Sword you normally get here at this point. Arinja still decided to leave Basillus for later.
Instead, I went to the lake area, where I just had an encounter with another named bandit group. However, Kivan managed to scout them in stealth, and so I decided to make use of the Fairy Dragons Invisibility 3m radius to get rid of the mage: It worked..
Arinjas Sleep spell hit the Hobgoblin, and, after the Human became dangerous due to his oil of speed, a combination of Doom, Command and Blind took care of him - yes, overkill, but you can never be sure enough.

Entering challenge with Likol a fighter/thief:

My BG 1 setup:
Baldur's Gate 1
Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion
Official Tales of the Sword Coast patch
no mods
I've already got my party I intend to use for the rest of the game (unless someone gets chunked). Khalid will tank, Branwen will be our divine caster and backup tank, Likol will do thieving tasks and otherwise use a composite bow and Imoen will be our mage (who was dual-classed to a mage at level 2).
Jaheira is taking an extended vacation experiencing the black lotuses at the carnival while the rest of the party deals with Likol's quest.

Arinja continued exploring the Lake Area completely. After an encounter with a horde of gnolls and Drizzt, she met the group of Half-Ogres Bjornin was looking for. While travelling further south-west, ignoring the Xvart village for now, the group was ambushed by a Winter Wolf - which means almost 1k experience and 500 gold for free
Anyway, Arinja decided to help Jared with a mountain bear and got the cold resistant boots - seems that quest rewards aren't randomized. Well, it will help against the Winter Wolves. I decided to mostly ignore this area as well for now, and went to grab another magic item at the beginning of the gnoll fortress area. Obviously, I didn't get gauntlets of dexterity, but a small shield +1 from the Orgrillions. Still, Branwen can use this. Also, another Ambush involving one of the bears (I am scared of them - their high speed is so unnatural for me, I always run if possible when I encounter one of them). However, Doom + Blind was effective as always (I don't think the first level Druid spells are that great, and besides one Blessing, I really don't need a lot of healing spells right now, so Doom is a good choice to make my Mages and Clerics save-or-else-spells more effective).
Entered the Brage area and brought him back safely. Now the party has around 4k gold, and most party members are level 3. Which means - second level spells! Hold Person and Melfs Acid Arrow so far (didn't bother to buy scrolls at High Hedge).

We try to rest outside Nashkel mine. Two winter wolf attacks are followed by kobolds, and we are forced to raise Kivan at a temple. Removing a half-orc cleric called Mulahey is a simple affair, then we interrupt a mage called Nimbul so Minsc can chunk him right out of his dodgy boots.
Tranzig, Osmadi, Corsone, Teven, Raiken and a caravan bandit leader all die but Deke turns tail and we are unable to kill him. Ardenor Crush is next then Garclax. Taugosz Khosann is tough but fireball, doom and three magic missile spells are too much for him.
Minsc deals with Britik and Raemon as we send magic missiles at Venkt. A doomed and blinded Hakt is left until last.
Cloakwood is problematic, with Minsc refusing to use a shield. He is poisoned several times but potions and spells do their job. With the addition of Spiders Bane he is even less likely to see reason.
Branwen uses two skeletons to remove a hamadryad, and then Minsc almost meets his match against a family of wyverns. Despite fireballs, entangle, magic missiles, doom and web he is poisoned twice. His second potion refuses to be glugged until he is almost dead (9/52hp) but once drank we finish the battle and depart.
Fireball and horror sort the men out from Drasus & co - Kysus is a smouldering pile while the other three run scared. I drop Rezdan with a bullet while a second fireball explodes. Branwen holds Drasus while Imoen and Dynaheir give Genthore some magic missiles. Dynaheir aims a second volley but Minsc is quicker. I switch to my venom dagger to kill a helpless Drasus.

Minsc, ranger 6. 268 kills, sirene.
Murb, swashbuckler 7. 121 kills, lesser basilisk.
Dynaheir, invoker 7. 96 kills, Sil.
Imoen, mage 5 (thief 6). 30 kills, Seniyad.
Kivan, ranger 6. 177 kills, greater basilisk.
Branwen, cleric 6. 24 kills, lesser basilisk.

Mods I've got installed are the same as last time, although I probably won't play through all the BG1 mods this time:-
CharmPatch
BG2 Fixpack
BGT
Dark Horizons
Dark side of the sword coast
Drizzt Saga
The Grey Clan
Thalantyr Item Upgrade
BGT Tweak Pack
BG2 UB
SCS
Solaufein
G3 Anniversary Mod
SCS II
Item Pack
Worldmap
L1 NPCs
I will be playing this as a solo character. In addition I won't be making use of any of the mod-added equipment in BG1 as this makes the game a bit easy.
So far have survived Candlekeep, although it was a close thing when the Dark Horizons assassin backstabbed me from the shadows. Cleared the next area using my sling and then just took out the ogre from the crossroads as sling bullets were getting low. At the Friendly Arm attacked Tarnesh. Buffee was protected from fear and had a sanctuary ready to hand the job over to the guards if necessary. However, Tarnesh went down to a command and never recovered.

Thanks Corey. I haven't tried it with a magic user before, but I've completed it with monks twice and also a standard fighter. I usually find the most risky part is early on when you're so vulnerable to a stray arrow.corey_russell wrote...

Arinja continued exploring - some uninteresting areas like north of Beregost, northwest of Beregost and north of Nashkell. However, north of Nashkell, much to my surprise, the group actually encountered a Vampire Wolf. I have no idea what he's doing in that area, but I was like "that's 2000 xp! Go!", not realizing that Jaheira is the only one with a magic weapon (quarterstaff +1 through item randomiser). The Vampire Wolf managed to Hold Khalid and Imoen, but his script seems to ignore already held people, so he didn't finish them off but instead attacked the other characters. Luckily, he didn't get Jaheira, and she did a nice 18 damadge crit. Of course, I had Branwen summon her Spirit Hammer, and together with Arinjas two Melfs Acid Arrows and one charge of the Energy Ring, they brought the monster down.
After selling stuff and resting in Nashkell, the area with Arghain was explored. The bandit himself was not very threatening: He didn't even use a potion. Actually, he dropped his regular Greatsword +1, so maybe item randomiser doesn't affect his loot. Still, now Kivan also has magic weapon.
Also explored the Cave with the Ettercap - luckily, I remembered the trap right at the entrance, and Imoen disarmed it.
Far more difficult here were the random encounters, because there were actual Ogre Magi added to two groups. Their SCS script includes Haste, Mirror Image and Sleep. Obviously, the fact that half-elves are supposed to be resistant to sleep effects, didn't help Khalid. Even though Arinja successfully blinded the ogre magi, he still managed to kill Khalid because of his haste before the group could finish him off. Back to Nashkell, ressurecting the Fighter.
The group was too late to save the Cow, because it was somehow killed offscreen (I never saw it being alive).
After Arinja returned, the group met another Ogre Mage. This time, Arinja blinded him before he managed to reach the, once again, sleeped Khalid, so he ran around wildly with his haste, but the group eventually caught and killed him.
Now for the actual ogre camp in the eastern part of the map. There was another wolf-transformation Wild Surge, but it didn't really matter. It was just a lot of running away and shooting the ogres, eventually with success.
Then, the group ran into a human group of three I completely forgot about - luckily, Branwen had 3 Hold Person spells ready. Battle started off with Hold Person and Bless. I had to use two healing potions (for Khalid and for Arinja), but still, eventually the Hold spells provided the much needed dominance.
There was another bigger group were I had a strange wild surge - green flashy effect, and the text said "held", but nothing happened at all.
Well, back to Nashkell to sell and rest up

I too got those winter boots, so maybe Item Random does skip that (probably for aesthetic reasons since it's a polar bear you have to kill), but I didn't get the Greatsword from Arghain. Did you allow a chance for items to not be randomized?Enuhal wrote...

Sorry for your loss, Grond0. I hope you'll try it again. Ghasts can be really dangerous and I have a lot of respect for even the lowest of their forms, but, luckily, I usually don't play a PC that has to go into melee range so normally, they'd only hold my tank if I did a mistake. I remember always using Hold Undead on them with a Cleric of Lathander when I played one, but I suppose if you play a solo cleric/mage and your turn undead isn't strong enough to scare them yet, you won't have third level arcane spellslots for the arcane version of Hold Undead, either.

Sorry for your loss Grond0. Did you know one of the tombs has freedom potion as loot? If you used that the ghasts would have been a lot easier. But you might not have that potion if it were randomized.
Likol and company (Khalid, Branwen, Imoen dualed to a mage) have cleared out hostiles on the road areas from Candlekeep to Nashkel. We got a few levels from doing this. Branwen got some level 2 spell slots when she leveled (hold person - yay! Could help against greywolf). Imoen is STILL a level 1 mage - mages sure take a while to level. Khalid is level 3 and got a great HP roll, so now he has 37 HP. Branwen only has 17 HP but she does have -1 AC (Khalid has -2 AC, and so does Likol when he wears plate, which he always does at this point unless his thieving skills are needed). Likol gained a thief level. His trap detection was 15, so put all his points into that. I usually do the Nashkel mines when every one is level 3 - this helps the mages especially not to die from a stray arrow critical.
We went to Beregost at one point but the Smithy wasn't there. So Likol helped himself to the bastard sword +1 for Khalid. Never know when we run into a creature immune to normal weapons. Branwen has her spiritual hammer, and at the moment at least that's it for magic weaopons. We'll need to work on that, as funds allow.

Normally I would kill ghasts from out of range of their attacks as exposing a solo character to a chance of being held is not a good long-term solution! As they provide 650 XP they're actually one of the quickest ways to level up - much quicker and easier than a host of kobolds with bows for instance.
While I wouldn't have bothered taking this anyway as I didn't intend to get into range it does just confirm my view of the importance of the ring of free action in BG1. There are just so many ways to get held in the game - spells, traps, spiders, ghasts etc.corey_russell wrote...

Another short update for today:
Arinja decided to clear the Xvart village. There was a big battle, that was easily decided by a) sleeping all the xvarts and
And, finally, the group decided to take Silke down. I prepared a couple of spells, so she'd eventually fail her save: 3xDoom, 1x Charm, 3x Command, 1x Silence, 2x Blind, 1x Magic Missle, 2x Melfs Acid Arrow were the most important ones.
When I encountered her, she was buffed with MI and Stoneskin. However, all she could do was casting one magic missle spell at Khalid before Doom, Silence and Blind all successfully hit her. Both silenced and blinded, she was no real threat. The good thing here: She actually dropped two magic items - Studded Leather +2 and War Hammer +1, both pretty useful
I also defeated this Bounty Hunter, brought back Perdues Sword, Zhurlongs Boots and talked to Bjornin.

This time trying really hard to be careful. Progress summary to date listed below
- summoned a familiar straight away for the HP boost
- used sanctuary with the aim of leaving Tarnesh to the tender mercies of the Friendly Arm guards, but they failed to finish him off and needed to nip in and out of houses a few times to exhaust his spells
- blinded ogre and restored his belt to its former owner
- ambushed by bandits on the road to Beregost. Buffer had his armour on, so was not an easy target, but two criticals took him down to 3 HP before he managed to run away.
- calmed Marl down
- took Algernon's cloak (and a reputation hit)
- led a procession of spiders up and down the streets of Beregost, while the Morninglord guards (supposedly there to protect the town from monsters) looked on benignly; took the spoils to make a patron of the Friendly Arms very happy
- finished delivering a letter to a grateful wife
Now can cast second level arcane spells (if I knew any). Will head in next session to buy an invisibility spell to reduce the chances of nasty ambushes.

Likol and the gang (Khalid, Branwen, Imoen) at still kicking it. The party fought to the gnoll fortress, getting gauntlets of dexterity for Khalid and tome of leadership for Likol. This puts Likols charisma at 18.
The party bought necklace of missiles -- makes a few places in the mines much safer to deal with. We explored the surface of the mines and got a lot of levels for the party. Encountered a poor soul named Prism -- we successfully defended him from a bounty hunter named Greywolf. Greywolf resisted 2 hold person spells and sleep, however command worked and so did blind. Khalid still had to gulp a heal potion. Greywolf's long sword will go to Likol.
We found an area filled with gibberlings nearby. Imoen got to level 3 here, which meant we were finally ready to take on the Nashkel mines. We found a ring of fire resistance in the area.
We next dealt with the Nashkel mines. Khalid with his -5 AC was pretty much only taking damage on criticals from the kobold arrows. Imoen wears the belt of piercing, and Likol is still wearing plate, except for a few places where his thief skills were needed. Since most of the mines consist of kobols with 7 experience, we headed straight to an orcish cleric at the bottom of the mines. We headed into Mulahey's room and Khalid fired a great shot from the Necklace of Missiles. Only Mulahey survived, but then Branwen's hold spell got him -- no chance after that for him.
We freed Xan -- not because we intend to use him, but we needed help to loot the junk. Also, if a character gets chunked (especially Imoen), I may need Xan. So might as well get him out of the mines so he's easier to recruit if that ever becomes necessary.
We then headed to the carnival to sell our junk and then kicked Xan out of the party. Imoen got a nice 2nd level spell from Mulahey's chest (web).
We then headed to Nashkel to get our reward. The party buffed and headed to the center of town and encountered Nimbul the assasin. Branwen used her spiritual hammer, Khalid used his bastard sword +1 while Imoen and Likol fired arrows at Nimbul. Imoen got lucky again and managed to blind Nimbul. Nimbul fired quite a few magic missiles at Khalid, but Khalid only needed to gulp one heal potion. The boots of avoidance went to Imoen, while the belt of piercing Imoen was wearing will now go to Likol. I would like to get shadow armor for Likol so he can wear that permanently, but not enough cash yet.
Party Status:
Brawen: Level 4 cleric
Khalid: Level 4 fighter
Likol: level 3 fighter/level 3 thief
Imoen: level 2 thief > level 3 mage

Back in Beregost, the group sold, restet and bought magic arrows and bullets, because it was time for hunting the two vampire wolves at the temple area. after the wolfs were spotted, Arinja put all the worgs to sleep, so only dread wolves and vampire wolves would follow the group. While running back Arinja Blinded the vampire wolves, and eventually, the group was able to kill them with their magical ranged weapons.
Next up was the Gnolle Fortress. Met my first Carrion Crawler, but he was blinded. The tome was replaced by a lousy bastard sword +1 (which I sold). Anyway, the Gnolls were rather easy, especially with a blind leader. Dynaheir was rescued and the group went back to Nashkell. Kivan complained about us not hunting the bandits, so I intend to quickly do the Nashkell Mines and the Bandit Camp next. This might be difficult - I know of the Amazon Party's ambush awaiting me, and we'll see how I can deal with Tazok's tent. For the way out, I'll definetly use invisibilty 3m radius, if I get this far.

Similar sort of position for him as his sister - must be a family weakness. After getting 3rd level cleric spells and buying an invisibility spell from High Hedge took on the Nashkel mines. First level just beat the few kobolds up; second level took more time, but combination of sleep and holy smite helped out. Third level charmed the duergar group and they cleaned out all the rest. Then decided to set the duergar against themselves. Down to 2 clerics I got rid of the offensive spells of one of them and then had him summon a skeleton and attack the other, while I waited out of range. Unfortunately the enemy cleric beat up the friendly one and then turned the skeleton. At the point when the skeleton came into view I started running away, but the cleric (even though still not visible) cast hold person at me. By the time it hit I was way out of view and hidden in a side cave and thought I might get away with it even after failing the save, but the duergar did eventually investigate his surroundings and the end came shortly after.
Why was I not invisible; why did I not get rid of the other clerics spells; why am I such a masochist!!!? Although the cleric's behaviour seems a bit unfair I have come across the situation before when a charmed character has relayed targeting information to members of its former party so can't really even plead ignorance as an excuse.
Best of luck to everyone else.
