I don't think I'll have much of a problem low level, got the early game reasonably sorted other than bandits and stupid opportunism like failed backstabs. Famous last words and all that!

I tend not to be very good with magic-using characters as I don't make enough use of their buffing capability, but we'll see whether this evil gnome temptress can surprise me.

Amazraphel has killed the rest of the Xvarts and the Ogre on the Coast Way. It got a bit hairy when he moved into the Entangle area to attack the Ogre, and got caught himself. The Ogre saved before he did and got about an arm's length from being able to hit him before getting Entangled again. Phew! After that Amazraphel managed to escape and move around the edge of the Entangle. Unfortunately, Lost Items (I think that's what's responsible) has changed the Girdle of Piercing to a non-magical unique girdle only suitable for completing Unshey's quest. Well, I'll get a quest reward when I reach the FAI, but no -4 AC vs piercing for me. That's going to make things a bit riskier. I also wasn't able to continue north because I ran into a pair of Dire Wolves and fled.
Instead, Azamraphel headed South and made it to Nashkel. Noober will give him enough XP for L3, and hopefully the Bhaalspawn power will come soon (thinking about, it the evil one is probably better for someone with CLW capabilities, but hey). Then we might have to have another go at reaching the FAI.

Another fresh start. Easytutu with Beregost hot fix and generalised biffing; as close to vanilla as I can get with a different engine.
Slight variation from last character. Here I am on my last day in Candlekeep.

After finishing the Candlekeep chores I grab two rings protection, wizardry and head into Beregost to deal with Marl and Firebead. From there it is south to Nashkel for Noober and Oublek then Captain Brage thief 2. I celebrate by summoning a pseudo-dragon to guard my backpack.
Drienne is too upset to thank me for returning her cat, and while I catch Gnarl sleeping his buddy Hairtooth wakes up. Spook fails to scare him away from me but I manage to knock him down with my quarterstaff.
Krumm is blinded so I can return for a sleepy Caldo. He wakes up early, disrupts my armour casting and attacks me despite being spooked. I manage to escape him and my second backstab is successful so I practice more on Krumm.

I'm not impressed with spook so replace it with blindness and move on. Who's next? Sleep fails but blindness and eight backstabs do the job mage 2 and thief 3.

I try to do the same to a mountain bear but it attacks blindly so I leave it for now. Maybe Arghain will be easier prey. He's not sleepy but at least he's blind. Five backstabs are required.
Two ogrillions south of Beregost are next, followed by a hobgoblin with some boots stealth. I am more pleased to shake hands with Melicamp than he is mage 3, thief 4 and * in shortbow.
I purchase two strength scrolls scribe failed even with intelligence 19 and retrieve a shortsword for my old buddy Perdue. He's glad to get it back but doesn't help me finish off a blinded assassin called Karlat.
I use both strength spells memorised to carry Samuel to Gellana Mirrorshade. After a rest I use another strength spell to loot an ankheg cave, leaving my staff behind when I run out of room in my backpack got every item so not a bad trade. I tell farmer Brun the bad news and hand him 100gp before finding out some fishermen have lied to me about a child priestess.
After a brief trade in Ulgoths Beard I emerge with a better quarterstaff +3. I use armour and strength to farm down some zombies not really solo'd a mage before, the combination and duration of these two spells even at level 3 really helps. After all that, Wenric decides he doesn't like the look of me so no reward. Fair enough, I'll empty his house and take a magical cloak. Now I can use the ring of fire resistance I picked up earlier.
Blindness, sleep and strength see off a belted ogre, and Joia rewards me for returning a ring to her.
Now, time for a risk. If my first spell fails I'm running. Success, time for some pillared backstabs.

Another risk. Even though blinded I'm standing too close there's a lesson I won't forget again. Still, I have time to heal and as she has no armour I can hit her witout hiding. Three blows and it is over.

Back to the fishermen then Tenya mage 4 thief 5 and the final risk of the day. It takes all three blindness spells, only for me to find ankhegs hide in this situation. Oh well, after a rest I find sleep is a better solution.

I use my remaining strength to drag the ankheg shell to Beregost, only to be ambushed by four bandits. Amazingly I manage to re-cast strength and escape. I get 500gp for the shell and stash Nestors dagger for later, then head to Nashkel mine. I step inside, but that's a story for another day.
I'm enjoying this, illusionist/thief may be one of the easier solo choices but I'm still learning non-party aspects and it feels like a good run so far.

This would be vanilla TuTu, so to speak, but there are some mods which actually make the TuTu engine more like the BG1 one (e.g. BG1-style summons, reduced walking speeds, etc). Of course then you start having to make judgement calls and whatnot.Gate70 wrote...

Great portrait Grond0.
Did you cast friends before talking to him - that often makes the difference in providing access to a reward?I use armour and strength to farm down some zombies not really solo'd a mage before, the combination and duration of these two spells even at level 3 really helps. I thought as the bear was panicked (definitely was panic as opposed to berserk) it wouldn't attack her. Possibly being blinded as well the bear thought it was trapped when it actually wasn't. However, Raena was created with a bit of flexibility in constitution so the damage is not too bad.
Here are her current character record and inventory. Now she has access to skeletons I'll probably send her to the pirate cave next to get her constitution back (I'm not intending to make use of the green amulet this run).

It was a quick trip up north to pick up Viconia (who will be given those neat Gauntlets of Ogre Power once I'm in BG) and after a lot of jumping around the map, picked up Shar-Teel. We bought a cautionary potion of mirrored eyes - lucky too, because despite sticking to the very edge of the map, 2 lesser basilisks and 1 greater basilisk attacked Duzak. He drank the potion and another potion of haste so that the mirrored eyes wouldn't wear off before the basilisks were dead (it can have a very painfully short duration when not timed correctly).
The party retrieved Perdue's sword, not without the halfing taking a load of abuse from Monty, Edwin, Viconia AND Shar-Teel. What a bullying party. Silke was also killed and Monty managed to pick pocket a potion of defense before the party accepted their reward. The spider house was cleaned out, Melicamp survived the anti-chickenator and Bassilus was easily killed - a simple hold person from Viconia made the battle a breeze.
The party is in Nashkel, ready to visit the carnival, get Greywolf's sword for Shar-Teel and find out what's happening in the mines. Especially for Monty, this is important to clear the Zhentarim from any suspicion.
Duzak lvl 4 Barbarian*
Kagain lvl 4 Fighter
Shar-Teel lvl 4 Fighter
Monty lvl 3/3 F/T
Viconia lvl 5 Cleric
Edwin lvl 3 Conjurer
*From a power game perspective, is a half-orc barbarian with max HP on level up the most HP a character can possibly get without buffs? The soon-to-be 20 CON with the d12 for HP rolls makes me think so.

Depends what level character you're thinking of. At level 1 a beastmaster with familiar could have 20hp.PicklePepperPiper wrote...

Anyway, get to 20 with the tome in BG. BG2 can add 1 from Lums machine and two more from Bhaals tears, that gets you 23. Then you can add item boosts, one I can think of is axe of unyielding +5.
That party looks fun.

It's certainly a party I'm not used to playing. Thinking to let Monty be the trap/locks man and get Shar-Teel to dual to thief to act as a backstabber. Sorely going to miss the lack of mage firepower towards the end (as someone who typically duals Imoen and has Dyanheir + CHARNAME with spells in their BG runs).

Just for a change of pace, I went into multi-player and made an all thief party. 4 elves (for DEX, longsword/bow bonuses), halfling (since they are the only ones that can get the sapphire in the Inn), and a human (for lore).
Joon just got an incredible roll real early, so he had extra left over for high CHA. So I put him in the leader spot. You could probably guess what happened next...
I gave Joon the ring we found in a rock. We also took down the belt ogre and gave him the belt of piercing. With wolves, whoever is under attack runs while everyone else shoots. This was working, but in one wolf encounter I didn't move a thief and they were one-shotted. It feels like dancing.
We took care of the goblin problem at the FAI. We headed south to Beregost and on the way, we met two bandit archers, who promptly one-shotted Joon - run over.
So yeah, an all paladin party MUCH more viable than an all thief party. Thinking what I could have done differently I should have traveled at night. This way the thieves who maxed their stealth scores could actually hide at night and backstab the archer bandits. Even if they missed it would make them pick up their swords, and the bandits aren't as good with those.

Edit with results including the random chance attempt count;
- Gnome with 18 dex and 60 in locks can (2nd attempt).
- Human and half-elf with 18 dex and 55 in locks can't *.
- Elf with 19 dex and 55 in locks can't *.
- Halfling with 19 dex and 65 in locks can (1st attempt).
- Dwarf with 17 dex and 60 in locks can (3rd attempt).
* or at least can't get it easily, I tried about 20 times.
Human for lore is an interesting one. Again I'd have thought most classes are the same (although halflings and gnomes have the 17 wisdom disadvantage). Grond0, I noticed you had an 18 wis for Raena, don't believe this is available in the vanilla game or even unmodded BGT/Easytutu.
Edit;
Human, gnome, halfling, half elf, elf, halfling, dwarf all have 3 lore with int/wis at 14. Gnomes and halflings max out at 17, game text confirms this as planned for gnomes but not halflings.

Quite right - consider my wrist slapped. My random generator incorporates racial restrictions on class, but relies on me to implement the racial changes to the random stats rolled (which I failed to do here). To save time I just rolled up any old character and then altered the stats in Shadowkeeper, which is why I didn't notice the problem.Gate70 wrote...

I haven't had 4th level cleric spells very long and think I've only made use of a 2nd 4th level spell illegally once. To balance that I've failed to learn a fair number of spells and would probably have been successful with more if intelligence had been higher. Therefore, although I will adjust the stats going forward, I don't feel any compunction about continuing the run.

As usually, I will play solo on maximum difficulty, vanilla BG1+TotSC with the latest patch.

By the way eagle-eyed viewers might have seen in a previous screenshot that she had quite a few healing potions in one of her quickslots - this was just the result of loot from encounters. I realised when she was level 3 / 2 that she had not made use of any potions (healing or any other sort) and decided it might be fun to try and complete a run without drinking a potion (don't remember ever trying that before). In addition she won't be using wands or amulets. She successfully learnt the improved invisibility scroll available from Ulgoth's Beard so I feel she should have enough of her own magic ability to make it through.
A few fairly random screenshots from her recent travels:
- bandit ambush (there are also a selection of wild dogs about to spring out of the ground). Raena hasn't been bothering with invisibility for travel as she wears a helmet. However, with the benefit of autopause on enemy sight she did take the opportunity to put her plate mail on and quickly stuff her quasit in her backpack.
- that's actually quasit number 3. Not sure what happened to the screenshot for number 2, but she got killed fighting the hobgoblin with the +2 shortsword in Bassilus' area. I hadn't noticed that she had already been slightly damaged (it's difficult to see damage with familiars and the screen text goes past very fast on my install) and a critical for 20 HPs was enough to finish her off.
- casting friends was enough to let Raena into the archaeological excavation. On exit the familiar did the running round, while Raena cycled through her repertoire of magic missiles (had just reached 5th level then for extra damage).
- for some reason Tenya decided she was not going to surrender (possibly she doesn't react the same to damage by a familiar). That was costly for her.
- Raena started off seeing how she would perform in melee against ankhegs with minimal buffs (though including protection from acid). The answer was not very well. She reverted to sending a skeleton ahead for the rest of the nest and trying out various spells - blindness and colour spray both did a good job.
- the other occasion where she took a lot of damage was against the ogre tribe at the coast. Now where can you find a surgeon when you want one?

Humans do not have a penalty to either wisdom or intelligence. I actually do not know for certain that affects lore (e.g., maybe a gnome with 19 INT gets higer lore). That was my reasoning, faulty as it may be...
And yes, Veene is still going. As I said in my post, I did it for a "change of pace". Grond0, you of all people should know you shouldn't play your BG 2 character no-reload if you are bored! I WAS bored (been playing Veene almost non-stop since Friday) Hence the change of pace with the all thief party.
@Vaclavc: good luck with your solo character.
EDIT: did a quick test -- a human thief with 18 INT/18 WIS gets 23 lore, a gnome thief with 19 INT/17 WIS gets 22 lore. So guess I was right, though just barely.

You wouldn't necessarily need it early - it kind of depends on the timing. You could actually pick up Safana to deal with the traps and locks in the Cloakwood Mines then go on to BG, get the tome, and dual her to mage. In a full party, it's unlikely she'd be higher than, say, L6, which is a good point to dual. If you want her to dual earlier, though, it'll be tougher. L6 is also her highest incarnation (at least in vanilla), so you could just pick her up late - but she'd probably be lagging behind your main character's XP total afterwards.corey_russell wrote...

Nashkel mine, a backstabbers delight. The first kobold I meet donates a shortbow as a secondary weapon and I pick up some arrows on the way to a half-orc cleric called Mulahey. After I blind him I step back and use the arrows. My last arrow scares him and I get to hide in the shadows for a final backstab.
Outside the mine are four amazon mercenaries. They're trying to ambush me so I buff and cast sleep. Three fall and Lamahla moves towards me. She saves against blindness, I save against a glyph of warding. She is blinded second time so I retreat for a backstab but Zeela has recovered so I blind her too.
I manage to kill Lamahla, then realise my backpack is bursting so head to Nashkel. The other three will have to wait for my return.
Nimbul casts mirror image, horror run away in shadows and saved then magic missile. I have failed to send him to sleep twice but my third blindness gets him. I only need one backstab.

Tranzig is next. I blind him but get Melfed. A backstab results in magic missiles and I gulp a potion and then heal before returning to backstab then drop him.
Teven and his bandits looks intimidating so I ask if there is a vacancy for a weedy gnome. Indeed there is so I get to meet Tazok who resists all my spells. He wants to play smash the shorty but I opt for backkneestabbing. He gives up after three triple backstabs so I rest and decide to thin down the camp. After killing all the hobgoblins, one bandit and Ardenor Crush I try to rest and the game hangs, back to the leaving Beregost autosave so will "roleplay" the next bit.
Tazok returns early, revives the fallen hobgoblins and fights me again. I land a decent backstab then a critical and he allows me to stay again.
This time I finish off Ardenor Crush and Taugosz Khosann. Inside the largest bandit tent I blind Venkt but Raemon criticals me 20 damage, 11hp left so I escape. Three of them follow me so I hide and return for Venkt. Two backstabs sort him out, then I loot the tent and sneak out.
Raemon and Hakt are outside so I pass them and drop Britik with three backstabs. I fail to blind Hakt but he only requires one backstab. Raemon saves blindness but also requires one decent backstab.

- at Nashkel mines she let the familiar solo most of the kobolds (their maximum damage is not enough to one-shot her, so it's pretty safe). At Mulahey's cave Raena blocked off the skeletons with a colour spray on the kobolds (later followed up with emotion to keep them quiet while finishing off Mulahey.
- emerging from the mine she used free action spell to enable her to take on the ghasts, while the revenant was blinded. No screen shot of the mage, but he was tackled with a couple of improved invisibilities while wearing him down, while some summoned skeletons dealt with the mustard jellies.
- coming back to Nashkel Nimbul put up a hard fight. He used 4 invisbilities (including 2 potions and a minor sequencer), forcing Raena to respond in kind. Eventually the familiar used itself as bait and Nimbul fell for it by casting sleep. Nimbul was already injured and a power word sleep on him spelt his doom.
- I felt obligated to do the Firewine ruins, even though the traps make them a bit tedious. The main trap danger there is lightning bolts - countered by boots and green scroll. Eventually Raena made her way through and both the ogre mage and Lendarn were blinded before being finished off. I don't think I've ever used blind so much as this run. In my current install the enemies seem to chase around a lot less than I remember in the past - only Greywolf has really been a pain, for running all over the map.
- on emerging from the back door I should have had Jenkal on toast when he fell over under assault from a colour spray, but it didn't stop him disappearing when badly wounded.
- easily the hardest battle of the run so far was also in Gullykin when the amazon ambushers popped up. I decided I didn't want to run, but fight it out to the death there and then. Raena was soon struggling because both thieves got their backstabs through her buffs (a problem because her healing capability is severely limited without access to potions). A successful dire charm bought her a few rounds grace, but the number of enemies after her was growing all the time. Use of her cloudkill scroll cut the crowd down to size and a few summoned skeletons completed the job, though she was in single figure HPs by then.
- on to the basilisk area. Raena doesn't know protection from petrification, but the green scroll provided her with plenty of time to deal with the enemies there. I very rarely use Korax, but he came in handy here - not only holding the mage (which was useful), but also both basilisks with him (though they were doomed anyway).
- Ulcaster was the last area on her list. First up was Icharyd; he was easy enough after she remembered to read a green scroll before the fight (the quasit is naturally immune and was useful in mopping up the kobolds). The wolf was rather a sterner test and Raena used more spells there than any previous fight. She could easily have been killed here as a couple of criticals from the many dread wolves would have forced her to use an invisibility spell - but that could have been interrupted.

However, she dipped into her scroll case to keep hammering away at the big bad wolf until he eventually keeled over. Then she did go invisible before, with 90% fire protection on, running through the nearby trap. This gave the remaining wolves a nasty shock. Fighting in the doorway with some freshly summoned skeletons it was easy to finish them off.
- On the way to High Hedge to sell junk Molkar and his ambushers showed up. Again I started off thinking that Raena would take them on in a fair fight and things looked promising to start with. However, with Halacan at near death Raena briefly got out of visual range of him and he regained all his HPs and spell book - while Raena was severely depleted. Therefore it seemed only fair for her to leave the map and get her own spells back. She'll finish that lot off before continuing on to the bandit camp.
