You're a harsh man, but yeah I was thinking to do it all! Before going on to Athkatla I'll have another attempt to finish the no XP run though.

Quick update for Raena.

She duly finished off Molkar and his merry men.  On arrival back among them she dire charmed the cleric thinking that he could then try a few hold persons.  However, within a second or so he had gone hostile again - presumably the same scripting glitch that allows spellcasters to regain spells when out of visual range.  Not to worry - a bit of running (within visual range) and magic missiling saw the end of the mage; the cleric was blinded and the remainder cleared up.

Travelling to the bandit camp Raena had a bit of an escape.  She was ambushed by spiders and wyverns - really must start travelling invisible!  Fortunately the nearest spider didn't try to web her and she was invisible before the other spider's web arrived (she saved anyway).

At the camp Raena reconnoitred the opposition.  Only some of these are scripted to follow an invisible character, so she dragged them away and then fireballed herself.  A couple more fireballs on the run got rid of Venkt and the rest was a matter of tidying up.  Taugoz was showing signs of wanting to run round too much while blinded, so he got stuck in a web to finish him off (Raena wanted his armour).

She has just travelled invisibly through the Cloakwood and arrived at the mines.  Having cleared virtually everything prior to the Cloakwood I think she's had enough action for one run and she'll only do side quests from here if there's something to gain (like Drasus' boots of speed).

Thats a HUGE army :o

Update on soloing elven thief Qyremon:

After death of Gorion, Qyremon survived traveling alone through wilderness to Friendly Arm Inn, where he killed numerous hobgoblins and helped Joia to find her missing ring.

Next, Qyremon visited Beregost. He completed many of the quests available around the town and then continued traveling south to Nahkel. In Nashkel mines area, he helped artist Prism against bounty hunter Greywolf.

However, investigation of strange events in Nashkel mines almost cost Qyremon his life. The very first kobold he met scored critical hit for 26 HP. Qyremon killed him, drank three potions of healing and attacked another kobold, who immediately scored second critical hit for 28HP. Thankfully, Qyremon had LMD active in both fights; otherwise, he would be dead.

After such gruesome experience, Qyremon retreated back to Beregost.

Good news is that Qyremon’s wounds heal well and he is currently preparing for the hunt – there is reportedly a wolf pack near Beregost temple. Hunting vampiric wolves should be significantly less dangerous activity than fighting murderous kobolds.

Qyremon is currently level 5 thief with 26HP.

Yeah, the lack of Ioun Stones in vanilla BG1 is a pain for *no-helmet* chars in case of critical hits. Best of luck with Qyremon! I trust in thy skills (you've mastered BG1/ToSC from my point of view) :)

Picenon the gnomish Fighter/Thief entering Trilogy No-Reload challenge...

@Grond0: Veene is still going. This is for a change of pace...

My character's name is pronounced (pik-a-non)

I've been wanting to solo BG 1 AND BG 2 with the same character for a while now...I did solo a fighter through BG 1 no-reload, but didn't feel confident at all in BG 2 since I haven't memorized the traps in that one. So the intent is to do so with this character. I have also made a starting save, so that if I die, I can start from the beginning and try again.

Image IPB

Setup:
Vanilla BG 1
TotSC
Official TotSC patch
no mods
Core Rules
"gore" on (NPCs can get chunked)

Action to Date:
Both Carbos and Shank got backstabbed. Less experience this way, but experience really isn't an issue for a solo BG 1 character with the experience cap in place, such as my game. Picked up a +1 ring and headed for Beregost (I've learned my lesson, don't head to FAI until a few levels under my belt).

In Beregost I calmed Marl. I then backstabbed him, ran outside, stealthed, go back inside and backstab, run outside, etc. He got quite a few hits in, had to use heal potions (I wasn't hasted). Got a book for Firebeard.

Next up was Karlat.. A critical from him CAN one-shot me, so I used a haste potion for safety. Backstab/run outside/stealth/go inside and backstab, etc. This got him. I got the quest from Perdue. My haste potion is still active, might as well make the most of it.

Therefore, I battled the spiders in Landarin's house. I did NOT try to backstab, but just get a free hit while stealthed, run outside, stealth, run inside and hit, run outside, etc. This got Picenon to level 2 thief. All points am putting in stealth for a while. Normally I do pick locks, but being able to pick locks doesn't help if one is dead.

Will try to get to FAI for the reward - will definitely be traveling stealthed...

UPDATE: Maeri ( HE Cleric 6/Mage 5 )

Good progress for Maeri.  She's managed to clear out all maps S of Beregost with the exception of :
  • Silke (just forgot her, need to get back to Beregost),
  • The inside of Thalantyr's house, including the Melicamp quest.  I've been carrying that chicken around for several weeks now.  I was surprised to see that Feldepost's in Beregost would buy Melicamp for 50 gp.
  • and (of course) Durlag's tower.
Getting a little sloppy now, I have to become a bit more careful.  Animate Dead is an incredibly useful spell, far more than I realized.

As a minor bonus, she revenged my prior run (who died below Firewine after a couple of lightning bolts from the wizard interrupted my fight with the Ogre magi at the Gullykin house exit).  We managed to clear the rest of the catacombs, and I was debating an approach to the wizard ( didn't have fireball / skull trap / other area damage spell ).  Finally, I just decided to send my two skeletons around the corner on their own, and hope the wizard would use up some of his spells before I engaged him in force.

In hindsight, this was exactly the right thing to do (although I've never used this tactic before).  The wizard fired off -- of all things -- a lightning spell (should have expected it, but I was clueless).  It bounced around the area and killed the wizard, and an ogrillon or two.  Seeing that his cheese tactic of lightning with bouncing walls was what killed my last party, I was more than happy that he got a taste of his own medicine: even his robe of electrical resistance wasn't sufficicent to protect him from... himself.  The tactic was so effective I never even lost one of the skeletons in the battle.

With him down, it was easy enough for my party to round the corner and finish off the survivors plus the Ogre Mage (failed a horror save, then was trivial for Kivan to mow him down with a bow).

Next stops:  Ankheg farm, the red wizards map and the basilisk map, then off to Pelvdale/Larswood/the bandit camp.

Party notes:
  • Ajantis (Paladin 6):  Still working fairly well as the party melee tank.  He's fallen somewhat behind on his XP merely because if there's a casualty in battle, it's almost always him.  Strong party contributor.
  • Kivan (Ranger 6):  Best contributor.  The party has no fear against pretty much anything that isn't arrow-immune, simply because he has the most attacks per round, the lowest THAC0, and still carries good melee punch with Ankheg armor and a two handed sword +1.  In particular, his racial enemy (Ogre) is an excellent choice for BG1, where it seems everything and its cousin has an Ogre or two roaming around.
  • Imoen (Thief 7): Decent contributor.  She has find/remove traps and open locks at 90, and detect illusion at 25, and I'm debating whether he trap/locking skills are sufficient to spend my last 25 points on detect illusion before dualing her to mage at 8.  I also need to select another rogue to add to the party for the transition period.
  • Maeri (Cleric 6/Wizard 5):  Growing in power.  I'm not sure I'll be happy with the character long-term, just  because I already feel overloaded in battle from having too many spell selections to work from... and that will only get worse as levels get higher.  Still, she's been quite effective in a number of roles... even limited melee.  The shield spell + draw upon holy might seems to be effective, even though I haven't combined those with mirror image yet for even more defensive goodness.

True, though I've always thought that Ioun Stones granting critical immunity is a bit stupid. I think it's more a symptom of having a "helmet" equipped than the things actually stopping people from stoving your head in.

@corey_russell: good luck with your new character. F/T is great for solo game in both BG1 and SoA.

Yes, some people even use C/M as effective tanks...

Meill, NG male gnome illusionist/thief.

The bandit camp was an experience mage 5 thief 6 unlike Cloakwood. I stop to grab a cloak and make my way straight to Drasus.

I use a new spell to charm him, only for his casters to confuse him. I blind Genthore then realise I can charm him too. As the mages focus on Genthore I drop Kysus with a backstab. Drasus has cleared off while Genthore has recovered. I sneak back in and backstab Rezdan but he Larloch's me and adds a dart. Have another backstab.

Genthore gets two backstabs and I start to look for Drasus. He's inside the nearest building and takes three backstabs. Now I have the boots of speed I can return to Beregost and sell their gear.

Cloakwood mine, I release the slaves and lock Hareishan and guards in with Yeslick sorry pal only realised after I'd done it.

Davaeorn has a personal bodyguard so I charm him. He gets a lightning bolt so I lure a battle horror into a corner and wait for some mage protections to expire. They don't even after an hour real-time so I backstab him. He wants to fight so I use the boots of speed to backstab and run, then do the same to a battle horror and a mustard jelly.

With the mine flooded I locate two magical tomes constitution, charisma, then another dexterity inside the city of Baldurs Gate. Then I try to grab a ring from Sunin. Not only does he out-cast me with 2 Melfs but his buddies resist blindness and kill me.

Thought I could take him but not to be. Oh well.

@Vaclavc: thanks for the good luck! I will need it, I haven't mastered a Fighter/Thief so will probably take me a few attempts

@Gate70: The archer uses arrows of piercing, so unless you have very high missile defense, a M/T is going to get killed quick. Heck in my party games, my heavily armored tanks take a beating from the guy. That situation is one where if solo, invisible in and from a corner summon some fodder (like say from a monster wand) and then while they are distracted go to town on the archer.

Not so bad - so long as you've got good defense against missiles they're pretty easy.  For army size (if not strength) I think the horde of gibberlings Laurel wants help with take some beating (I think there are around 80 of them - at least under SCS).  Hiding in a corner of the map and putting 50+ gibberlings to sleep with a single spell is quite funImage IPB.

Just time for a short session tonight - that sees Raena arrive at Baldur's Gate.

Outside the Cloakwood mine she initially tried to deal with the party with layered webs followed by 3 fireballs.  However, that failed to kill anyone and she was then forced to retreat by Drasus.  On her return she got Drasus and Kysus separated from the others.  Drasus was dominated and occupied Kysus long enough for Raena to deal with him.  Kysus had already blinded Drasus, so he was easy meat.  A skeleton army was used to finish the remaining two.

Raena used invisibility to go down to pay her respects to Daveorn.  Protected by barkskin and improved invisibility she tried a selection of spells out on Daveorn, but with no joy, so she went upstairs to rest.  On waking up she found that Daveorn had come to call; that meant the battle horrors were left on their own downstairs, which was fatal for them.  Back upstairs Daveorn saved against several more spells before a blindness finally took effect.  Had to chase him round for a fair while to get through stoneskins, but eventually he went down for good.

There were a number of spells in the treasure that Raena managed to learn - including knock that let her loot a bit more.  Unfortunately, the one she failed at was stoneskin, that I would really have liked her to have -  I suspect that skeletons are now going to be needed to deal with Slythe.

Yep, I realised that. Just thought I could cast a spell, hide and finish him with one backstab. Ended up badly wounding him and staying in too long.

Damij, TN human male avenger. EDIT: BTW that's a buckler...

I travel alone; though I want Imoen to travel with me she's high maintenance, always wanting more arrows.

I pass through Beregost Marl, Firebead on the way to Nashkel Noober level 2 +2HP, Oublek. Captain Brage is next and then I'm out of ideas. Better go buy a sling or something.

Ok perhaps this is a silly question, but why Gate70 wouldnt' you want at least 16 CON and DEX? You trying to apply to be an archer bandit target practice dummy? Or some restriction you have to take the first roll?

The Xvarts in the Xvart Village number quite a few as well. You also have a bear to deal with there, though the Xvarts can actually provide a defensive wall in that respect.

An update on Arzamraphel's progress:
Arzamraphel had some difficulties with the skeletons around High Hedge, but was able to rescue Melicamp (overkill Entangle + Web did the wolf in pretty easily). Unfortunately, Thalantyr's attempt to restore him failed (extra annoying since the 2k XP would have gotten Arz to L4).

I decided to risk taking on Karlat. I'd forgotten that Full Plate actually makes him a little easier, since you can run around him more easily and hit him with ranged weapons, which is what you'd be doing anyway. Instead I cooked up a dodgy plan which very nearly backfired on me. I was caught by both my own Web and my own Entangle, but luckily Karlat got caught too. He did get a few attacks off on my whilst I was Entangled, but missed.

I was then able to complete the Slime Quest and return Perdue's Short Sword, which along with the XP from skeletons, some zombies, and the few gnolls I ran into, gave me enough to reach L4. I also completed one of the Rain of Tears quests (the guy I was meant to find was supposed to be in the Temple area but showed up in Beregost so I'm not sure what happened there - anyway it was worth quite a bit of XP).

I'm planning on having a go at Tarnesh soon. A bit risky, after what happened in my last run with Neira, but I could pick up Imoen to make things a bit safer. Then to get J&K and it's party play from there. I'm thinking of soloing on to L5, though, since I need <4k XP. Brage should give me a bit of that, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Picenon the Fighter/Thief - FINAL Update

When we last heard of PIcenon (pronounced Pik-a-non) he was in Beregost. Instead of going to FAI decided I should take a detour and pick up the stealth boots nearby. But first had to deal with the 2 ogrillions on the road. To my pleasant surprise, my haste potion was still active, just enough to take them down. I found Miranne who wanted the letter. Then I cam back and looked for that hobgoblin with my boots. As luck would have it, my stealth dropped a moment before I could backstab. I ran into the nearby cave, and tried to backstab/get to the cave and repeat till they are dead. Ok got my boots time to sell and head to the FAI while stealthed.

Got to FAI without an ambush. Picked up the wizard ring, and walked by Tarnesh. I reported to Landarin that I got her stuff for her and their house is safe now. This got me a thief level. Went downstairs and one-shotted Tarnesh. Poor guy.

High Reputation is good, so got Joai's ring for her. No problems there, other than the slow looting process, as it took couple of trips with just PIcenon looting. Ok finally can head to Ankheg territory to get my Martial Staff. I got a bandit ambush with some kobolds. Ran as fast as I could, but luckily all the enemy archers missed. I escaped, stealthed and got just past the priestess of Umberlee's house. Just as I was walking past Nestor's my steatlh dropped! (guess 110% stealth isn't all it's cracked up to be). Luckily was at a map edge and escaped.

In Ulgoth's Beard, got my Martial Staff. I left UB and headed to Beregost. I rested and got Perdue's sword for him. I wondered if I could kill Shoal the Neriad like Grond0 does? I wanted to be sure I got her fast, so I got some +1 arrows to speed up the kill. I travel via High Hedge to the Sword Coast. I foolishly did not travel stealthed once there and had to use a heal potion vs.a wolf.

I saw Shoal and fired a +1 arrow at maximum range. Was able to get 2 shots before I had to start running. Well, Grond0 didn't mention that she runs FAST -- she appears to run just as fast me. I was able to get a total of 5 hits on her, but I ran out of room and she managed to get within talking range - THE END

Guess I better get back to Veene. I will restart Picenon (from the beginning, obvoiusly) later. Looks like I better use my own playbook too for PIcenon next time. Perhaps this has something with I'm vanilla and Grond0 is BG 2 engine, but not sure...

I don't think I suggested you could kill Shoal without running did I? Similar tactics work fine for her to those for other non-missile users, i.e. shoot, immediately turn and run for a round, shoot, run for a round etc. As you note you do have enough time for more than one shot before she approaches, but letting her get closer carries more risk if you mis-click slightly.

There's plenty of space to run into in that map, although if you're doing the encounter at L1 (for a starting boost) I would suggest you kill the creatures near her before attacking her. Particularly in vanilla you won't want to be distracted by a hungry wolf, while keeping your distance from her.

Sorry about Veene - good luck with a resurgent Picenon.

Thanks. I DID run, but if I didn't move straight back away from her she would gain if I turned in a circle, say. Eventually I got to the edge of the map and she would gain. Live and learn. Like I said, I should just stick with my playbook.

Thinking about it, several of your characters that killed her had huge strength and ***** in axes, so that probably sped up your kills of her.

Picenon "Reborn" - Level 4 fighter/Level 5 thief progress report

As I said in a earlier post, I restarted Picnenon from Candlkeep. The 2nd Picenon was only in trouble once this run, and that only because he took a big gamble (but also ended up beig a big payoff). More on that in a bit.

Picenon (pronounced "Pik-a-non") followed very similar strategy as Picenon #1, with one important difference. Once we did our tasks at the FAI, we did NOT try to go into Ankheg territory to get to Ulgoth's Beard. If our stealth fails (which if its even remotely light it does plenty) then we are toast.

So I spent my money differently this time. For one, I purchased plate mail from the FAI innkeeper and a large shield +1. I realized that once I get the belt of piercing, it will actually be safer to travel armored rather than stealth which can fail. Also can utlize perhaps the ONE advantage that vanilla BG 1 players have over those that use the BG 2 engine - namely that even though the game unpauses in the inventory screen, I also can switch armor at any time, including combat.

Secondly, we purchased the +1 staff from Thunderhammer Smithy and the +1 composite bow from Feldeposte's Inn. I believed the +1 staff will work fine for backstabs until money and levels allows me to get the martial staff. So far, this judgement appears to be correct.

What weapon to use when using a shield was a question -- only have proficicencies in blunt, so choices were with either warhammer, mace or club. I ultimately chose mace, but that choice did not last long. Namely because I battled that flaming fist mercenary just south of Beregost. I didn't backstab but was straight melee, wearing my best armor of course. The battle took FOREVER - like 7-8 minutes of real time, just watching both guys miss a ton. Picenon, however was able to hit his opponent even if he didn't get a critical, but same wasn't true for his opponent. Picenon did win but had to use 2 heal potions. All that work for 15 experience and plate mail - think I lost money on that one. As as was able, swtiched the mace with a basic club since at least I can backstab with the club if desired.

For the next area on the way to Nashkel, decided melee was not a good way to go. I knew bunch of hobgoblins coming up - sure could one-shot one with a backstab then a bunch of guys get chances to attack, lots of chances for criticals. Instead I stealthed (which was hard, bright day), and at extreme range fired my bow. This safely defeated the hobgoblins witihout any risk. I had got the belt of piercing earlier.

Used my bow to defeat Neira as well, though did have to leave the inn a few times till she succumbed.

Normally with a full party I farm experience, but i realized with the experience cap, that seems like a waste of time (and possibly resources, if I have to use things like healing or antidotes potions for little gain). So instead, I figured I would just accomplish some goals, and only go after experience if it's high enough gain.

My first major battle was againt Greywolf. At first I wasn't sure how to deal with him, since backstabbing is out by force since to trigger him I had to talk to Prism. I had a haste potion, heroism from Zodral's would-be-victim, but I knew I needed more help in the Thac0 department. I got it! The strength potion from the ogres guarding the Gnoll Fortress bridge. So I headed there wearing my best armor and got ambushed - Yikes! I see magic being cast but don't see anything, must be an Ogre Mage. I back off, equip my leather and stealth! I had a run end to an Ogre Mage, not letting that happen again. Good thing too as I walked past the Ogre Mage's position I saw a cave bear. Nice experience, but too low level still and not the right equipment to deal this. Fortunately, Piconen WAS well prepared for the half-ogres and defeated them (pretty simple in melee since I had the girdle of bluntness equipped). And as a boon, the gauntlets of dexterity sold for 3500 gold.

Time for Greywolf himself. I used potion of heroism, hill giant potion, and haste potion. Best AC I can get (-5) and using a basic club. We engage, and we both hit each other number of times, though I hit him a few more. I also used some heal potions, which sealed his fate.

I'm getting pretty close to affording shadow armor, so I head to Thalantyr to sell my frost wand I found near the Nashkel Mines. While on my way I killed a skeleton and got his skull. Might as well as pick up Melicamp and see what happens. Somewhat shockingly, Melicamp survived his tranformation back to human! A dream for a solo player...I wonder if I can get his flesh golems, which would be 4000 experience? This was risky, but very high payoff if I can pull it off. I put my AC to -8 to blunt and engaged (only after making sure out of sight of Thalantyr of course). The first one was almost fatal, it got two big hits in. I ran, potioned, and ran, hoping the 2nd golem doesn't get into visual range. Potioned once more and attacked. I only get 1 attack per round with Greywolf's word, as I only have 1 pip in large sword at the moment. After each hit, I back off to let some time pass then try to take some more swings -- success!

I went to Thunderhammy Smithy and thanks to Melicamp rep increase, I can almost afford the Shadow Armor. Just had to pilfer the Smithy's own +1 bastard sword and sell it back to him and sell my +1 ring (since it can't be equipped at the same time as either the Shadow Armor or Ankheg armor).

Feel good about this run, though there's still lots more to go. Playing solo is exhilirating...the leveling rate is real nice too.

I just tried that conflict out with a vanilla installation.  There seemed to be no problem keeping ahead of her running round the large group of trees to the East (where the wolf spawns).  In fact a couple of times during the combat I got out of visual range so could even have hidden if I'd wanted to.

Possibly the difference is that I use the pause button almost continuously in combat, i.e. run to my intended location with aura clear, pause, shoot, pause, run to new location etc.  That makes sure that the minimum amount of time is spent shooting as opposed to running.

Anyway, you've obviously mastered your own technique for this game, so I'll let you get on with it.  I'll look forward to seeing how Picenon fares in BG2Image IPB.

Great to see another Avenger on the books. I have to agree, though; with neither Dex nor Con, he looks a bit squishy.
If you're stuck for things to do, the Coast Way ogre is always a good one, the Ogrillions with Mirianne's letter are quite doable (and she'll give you a Ring of Protection +1) and if you can deal with the skeletons (much easier with Unshey's girdle), Melicamp is the obvious next step. I think I got a bit of a boost from mod quests but L4 is relatively achievable without too much straying from the beaten track.

Picenon the Fighter/Thief FINAL update:

I got the necklace of missiles, so next up was to save up for greenstone amulet. Also got the protection from magic scroll where you pick up Samuel.

I decided I would do the Sirines and pick up my CON tome. This seemed like a good idea at first, but I forgot how protection from magic works in Vanilla BG 1, as you will soon see.

The sirines were helpless with PfM up. I had -8 AC to the flesh golems. The plan was put up heroism and a strength potion. I tried to do so, but they didn't take hold. That's right in Vanilla NO magic anything, not even healing potions can take effect. This turned out to be fatal against a flesh golem.

Picenon got to level 5 fighter/level 5 thief before he bit it. I will have to ponder what run to do next...

Hard luck Corey - hope the party goes well for you. Flesh golems are another thing that worries me when solo because just a couple of hits can kill most characters. I normally only tackle them with missile weapons - often using the arrows donated by the sirenes just outside.

They definitely can be taken with a tank with potion of absorbtion, but I couldn't find any. For solo at least, I think a druid/bard/cleric/mage may have it easiest and they can put summons between them and the flesh golem then pump them with missile weapons.

In hindsight, as soon as I saw potions weren't taking effect, I should have rested. I got two really good backstabs in, so two were probably close to death. The healing potions would have made the difference ( as well as the heroism and strength potion). I was -8 to blunt weapons as it was.

Ok perhaps this is a silly question, but why Gate70 wouldnt' you want at least 16 CON and DEX? You trying to apply to be an archer bandit target practice dummy? Or some restriction you have to take the first roll?

I have to agree, though; with neither Dex nor Con, he looks a bit squishy.

I'm powergaming. Look at my charisma :o

Seriously though, fair point. When he dies I'll probably roll up another hardcase but It could be a fun run while it lasts. I suspect when I get a sling I'm going to do a double-take at his THACO and a 2hp level up made me laugh.

Condolences about your last two characters Corey. Tried a ranger recently?
