I think the main thing this experiment has confirmed is that the wands can be unbalancing in BG1.

In this respect, the most unbalanced class may be Bard. The abilities to cast 4rd level spells within XP cap, use any wand and scroll, chain mail armor and very good selection of weapons make him extremely powerful.

Update on human diviner Morveduin:
Surprisingly, Morveduin is still alive and well.
After solving the problems in Nashkel mines, he headed north to Friendly Arm Inn. After brief rest, Morveduin visited bandit camp. Invisible, he sneaked into Tazok’s tent.
I was afraid of this encounter, so I drank my only Oil of Speed as well as Potion of Absorption, then cast Resist Fear and Mirror Image. I opened the fight by casting Lightning Bolt from wand on Venkt, than Horror. I finished Venkt off with Magic Missiles. Raemon was successfully Held, Hakt died in salvo of Magic Missiles, Britik fell victim to SkullTraps.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Because Morveduin was still far from level 9, he hunted Sirines in Lighthouse area and also in the area just north of it.
Posted Image

He also managed to kill one Flesh Golem, but then he ran out of Darts of Wounding, so he was forced to retreat.

In Cloakwood, he helped Aldeth against druids. He sneaked invisible through the rest of Cloakwood. Mercenaries guarding entrance to Nashkel mines were defeated via combination of web, stinking cloud and cloukill. Same tactics was used against Hareishan and her group.
In vanilla BG1, Davaeorn usually casts Dimension door and then he continues with Confusion, Lightning bolt and Monster summoning. Morveduin dispelled his buffs (he had two Dispels memorized in case Davaeorn would refresh his Mirror Image), then simply killed him with three salvos of Magic Missiles.Posted Image

Morveduin is currently on his way to Baldur’s Gate. He is level 9 diviner with 45HP.

Talking about backsliding it might be time for another spot of that - Deb has just fallen at almost the same spot as Rab!  I decided to have some fun with Baruk and his kobold commandos and was pleased when all but one of the kobolds failed their saving throws and fell asleep.  The text said caster level decreased by 1 so they should have been out of action for 20 rounds.  However, as they wake up when damaged this was not necessarily a death sentence.

I should have been more suspicious however when Deb used a magic missile on Baruk to hasten his demise - caster level was supposed to improve by 3 (which would be 8th level), but only 2 missiles were created.  Just as Baruk died the commandos all woke up and Deb was immediately put to sleep permanently.

I suspect what may have happened is that the wild mage level calculator assumed a start position of level 1, rather than Deb's real level of 5 - so the kobolds woke up after 5 rounds.

I'm tempted to restart Deb, but allowing her rather more freedom to progress quickly.  I like Alesia_BHs idea of 1 charge/day wands, so might adopt that - will think about further tonight after work.

That idea of one charge per day wands is indeed a good one. I rarely use wands myself, saving them for the boss fights.
With Algernon's cloak, I reserve it for party members and neutrals. I used to use it on Bassilus to get him to fight Zargal etc but that made it too easy.

Sorry to hear about Deb. Posted Image

 Day 34, 1369.

The last weeks have been quite bloody. I have slain Ogres along the coast, destroyed an entire village of Xvarts & laid waste to the Gnoll Stronghold to the west. Foul creatures, their stench clings to my blade no matter how many times I clean it. I'd do well to pick up a better blade(that doesn't reek of Gnoll blood!) before long.

Day 35, 1369.

Ambushed by a group of Iron hungry Ogres Northeast of Nashkel. Drove my blade through the biggest one of them, taught the rest a lesson I think - not much fight left in them after that. Picked up a proper blade from the talky one - put it to the test against a band from Amn shortly after. Blood everywhere, just the way I like it.

Day 36, 1369.
With each soul I wrest from it's mortal shell, I feel stronger. There's a sensation I can't quite describe. It feels like... Like I was born for this. That bastard Greywolf dared stand in my way - he had a hard time trying to keep his guts in place shortly after our "conversation".

I decided it was time to find out what exactly is going on within the Mines. Didn't take too long to find out that Kobolds had overrun the place. Kobolds. Pfah! I laugh at the pesky rats, for they are no challenge to a slayer of my stature.

Deep inside the mines, I did find a man named Mulahey - after a swift discussion, he put me to the test with his infernal magic. By the very GODS I hate these witches and warlocks for their knowledge of the art. I will put them ALL in their graves if need be. He proved to be quite the challenge, but I managed to crush his feeble body after his Spell of Holding released me from it's grasp. I was a fool to believe I could handle him without using my Scroll of anti Magic earlier. T'was my only one. At least I still breathe.

Pierced an assassin named Nimbul's eye with an arrow shortly after. Blasted Mage had it comming.
Will find this creature named Tranzig soon, may put me to yet another test.

Tyrox the Vile

(Thank you all for the kind words, I am very glad the lot of you are enjoying my travels as much as I am! Had quite the close call with Mulahey as well - managed to get the Scroll up just after the Hold Spell broke. Sure am glad I waited to go here untill I had a decent amount of Hit Points(75 now at level 7). Had an internal arguement concerning either trying to halt his spell casting with the Bow or the Blade, but decided to play it safe. Glad I did!)

@Grond0
After that battle, I have to agree with you. I really should try to play it safe, but for some reason I am trying my best to do this without using too many scrolls. And I'm very sad to hear that Deb perished. I wish you much Luck for your next character!

@After5CST
Had no idea, thank you for that information! My characters tend to be Human, Half-Orcs or Elves - might change in the future then!

@Alesia
Thank you, and the feeling is mutual! I very much agree with the wands as well. When playing Horus, using wands felt very overpowered to me. Now that I can't use wands at all, I really feel the difference.

You keep a great speed Vaclavc, great job. I have a good feeling about your run! Also I picked up the poison trick against golems from your posts and collected a bit of xp from the cave with the tome and the nymphs + the two golems more in high hedge. Thank you for that!

A quick update on Morti who has increased a fair bit in strenght, having been through the bandit camp:
Posted Image

This is the standart tactic, always scouting ahead with Imoen in stealth and then buffing and aproaching the fights based on her intel. It takes longer but is such a big help for one such as me with big holes in my metagaming knowledge :)
Also it is satisfying for a Role Playing point of view.

Cloakwood has been passed through as well:
Posted Image

Posted Image

And I just finished clearing the mines before making this post as well:
Posted Image

Those took me quite a while to clear because I was so nervous for traps.. fine combing every square inch with Imoen before moving forward made them feel quite long.. but because of the carefullness I had no issues in any of the fights at least!

I took this screen some minutes ago having just chatted with Elminster..
My levels are 7/7 cleric/Mage and Imoen is at her ninth thief level. I hope to collect what skill tomes I can now and hopefully find a useful level 4 mage spell for my empty spot in the mage book.

PS: May tymora be with all these crazy wild mages rumbling about :D

Day 37, 1369.

Dealt with the Mage Tranzig. Put one arrow in his chest and another through his arm, as I made my way towards him. He fumbled his first spell thus giving me the advantage I had hoped for. Before he could finish his next Spell, my blade struck him with enough force to disturb his ancestors. Someone needs to clean up the mess he made of himself.

Time to slay some bandits.

Day 38, 1369.
Just entered Larswood. Heard some noises from some nearby ruins and headed there. Can't see.. wait, someone approches. Looks like a druid - seems hostile. Will (the rest of the page is covered in blood, and you can't make out the rest.)

(Sadly, one of the most fun characters I have played fell to a Druid and his Bear. As Tyrox slew the druid, the hold spell managed to land and resulted in Tyrox getting severely mauled.

I will continue my quest in soloing Baldurs Gate 1, seeing as it's a lot of fun! I just need to figure out what class I will play!)

Aye, t'is a sad day for the Vile Half-Orc!

I have decided to roll myself a Monk in my next journey! Perhaps he will do better than poor Tyrox and his brothers. Let's hope he survives!(no bow might be a huge problem, and I am not a big fan of slings/darts - so this can get interesting!)

Meet Azmodai - the Lawful Neutral Monk!
Posted Image

(I am quite scared when looking at his Thaco as well as low hitpoints, I need to get him up a few levels before I begin fighting scary stuff!)

Thank you kind sir! Are Monks really that strong on their own higher up in their levels? I was hoping I was in for quite the challenge - but perhaps I am wrong? Please do elaborate - for I do not want to beat this solo challenge with a class that is too easy!

It's not going to be too easy in BG1. They're not terribly difficult if you use potions appropriately, but they're by no means easy.

Once they hit level 15-20ish monks do become much stronger.

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Alessandra has routed the Bandit Camp. Like many of her fights, this battle was won before combat began: her buffs and battle plan assured victory. All Alessandra had to do was follow through and enjoy herself. It was fun.

A delightfully stupid and unrepentantly cheesy video covering the fight can be found here:

The song that accompanies it is Fast and Frightening by L7:

For the curious, her pre-battle buffs where Pro Fire, Pro Cold, Pro Evil, Potion of Mind Focusing, Potion of Stone Form, Potion of Frost Giant Strength, Oil of Speed, Potion of Regeneration, Shield, and Greenstone. The Poison and physical portion of ranged Critical Hits was the only damage that stuck. That damage was promptly healed by Regen Potion + Oil of Speed and 127% Cold Resistance + Arrows of Ice which is why Alessandra looks invulnerable during the fight.

I'll post more on Alessandra's recent adventures soon.

Best,

A.

@Grond0 and Easymask- Sorry for your losses.

Great video, the music worked this time around!

@AnonymousHero
Thank you for that information! As I cannot shake this Wizard Slaying buisness just yet - I have made yet another!

This time around, we're stepping into the life of Syrakul the Serpent - who has(after I was enthralled by Alessandra's staff mastery!) trained in the art of the Staff!(at least untill I get a weapon that doesn't break as fast as Two-Handers!)

And here he is, the Lawful Evil Human Wizard Slayer!

Day 1, 1369.

I have just witnessed the fall of my foster father. I went through most of his possessions - and t'was there I found a journal belonging to some Half-Orc named Tyrox. Interestingly enough, it seems that he was a Slayer just like I am. I will be sure to note down my victories against the Wizards I should encounter - just as he did. Lady Luck wills it, my journey will not come to the same abrupt end that his did.

I realize now that I was lucky the last time I went to the Nashkel inn early - after getting slain by the assassin there on Syrakul. Damn, it's quite hard to play a Wizard Slayer! I think I will have to change things up a bit and try something else for a while - seeing as I've led 5 Wizard Slayers to their deaths!

You are welcome. Arrows of biting are even better than darts. You are making fantastic progress, by the way. I like it how you scout ahead and plan your tactics accordingly.

@Alesia: great video, as usually, thanks.
@Easymask: do not give up on wizard slayers. Grond0 demonstrated some time ago that they can be very effective.

Serg, are monks really that powerful? I have never played one.

Short update on human diviner Morveduin (level 9, 45 HP):
With gained access to Baldur’s Gate and Ulgoth’s Beard, Morveduin purchased new spells and Cloak of Displacement. He completed only few sidequests available in Baldur‘s Gate (Poison quest, telescope for Brevlik, helping Aldeth in Merchant League) and focused on main quest line.
He also obtained Ring of Wizardry from Sunin and tomes increasing dexterity, intelligence and wisdom.
After completing quests for Scar, he investigated building belonging to Iron Throne. Morveduin defeated mercenaries guarding upper floor (buffed with Blur, Mirror Image, Haste and Minor Globe of Invulnerability; attacking with Lightning Bolts, Fireballs and Coudkill) and reported back to duke Eltan.Morveduin is currently heading to Candlekeep.

Well, personally I never run one for myself too (tho, I'm tempted a lot and he is definitely in my * to do* list) but just one look at the massive *Advantages* list gives you an idea on how powerful this class is - loads of immunities, fast movement, 1D20 damage with fists from 15th level with 4 attacks per round (from 18th level) with *+3* fists, natural Magic resistance (aside from item's bonuses). Above that he runs on the Cleric experience table (level up faster then fighters, can use Cleric spells via Scrolls to buff if needed), can Hide in Shadows etc. etc. Alas he can't be hasted but he need not to be hasted. So even without *rebalancing* mods he is very capable, imho. And I also like the concept - unarmored, bare hands killing machine :)

Aye, I really don't want to give up on them. I might just have been going about it the wrong way. This will be my last attempt on a Fighter for a while, got some other classes I'd like to try if he doesn't make it. Wont do any updates on this guy untill he makes it to Cloakwood. If he dies, I'll update though. This one is a human, but unlike the rest - he's using One-Handers and a Shield. That should make him a bit tougher around the edges.

@Vaclavc AnonymousHero is probably the resident expert on monks and has used the revised HLAs, but I've taken several of the original model through BG1. I would agree that post 14th level when they get magic resistance they start getting quite powerful (though that's true of many characters at that level). In BG1 they are one of the weaker characters, but still have significant strengths of their own - the quick movement makes positional play easier and hide in shadows is a huge advantage for a solo character, though doesn't add much in a party.

I've decided that Deb doesn't deserve another chance at life as I should really have spotted the problem with her spells earlier.  So instead I've rolled up ... another wild mage - though this one is human rather than elven.
Posted Image

I've also decided that she should be true to her nature as a wild mage and hence will use her own spells rather than relying on items.  That obviously introduces an element of uncontrolled risk, but it should keep interest going in the characterPosted Image.

I wish you much luck on the Surge table Grond0! I've experienced surges while playing solo myself, as I very rarely use wands/scrolls and other items as we have talked about earlier - and the effects really do suprise you! Raqulis hardly used any items either in the four-man squad that defeated BG1 - but she was very lucky with just a few surges.

Good hunting! Myself, I believe I have went mad in this Wizard Slayer game. Pre-Nashkel Mines at the moment, he's now a 5/6 Wizard Slayer/Thief - t'is MADNESS! No boots of stealth or anything. Will post some more about him if he makes it past the Bandit Camp!

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Like Firkragg and Bodhi before them, the Iron Throne has decided to stop messing around and call in the security experts. Alessandra's save is currently inaccessible. I expect to be able to recover, but at least a few days of progress have been lost.

I'll post if and when Alessandra gets back to where she had been. Best of luck to all in the meantime. And take it easy on those villains: they may get a mite desperate and resort to sabotage...

Best,

A.
