OdareUD7;

@Alesia_BH Sorry m8 what a Bugger! :?

Just a quick one;
The sweet little child tax is at a friends place tonight so I indulged myself… let’s see, we saved a pretty lass from two would-be rapists then had words with Marek about spiking our drinks & borrowed some items for the local five-fingers discount club before killing lots of shape shifters for the cops.
Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image

Unfortunately  I forgot about the wild mage ambush (SCS) and when the duke transported us to candle keep, things out side the gate got a bit messy… thank GOD Imoen had the foresight to purchase some arrows of dispel or things would have been a lot worse!

I was wondering where this came from. Is it something that I've missed, or is it a mod? If so do you know which one?

Well Solar didn't last long. She had done some initial work and got up to level 4 without problems and not even a benign wild surge. However, her familiar had regularly been in melee and a critical eventually caught up with him. I thought this would be a minor problem as she had been created with extra constitution, but his death triggered hers.

What I hadn't appreciated was that the damage caused by a familiar death would also be doubled with difficulty set to maximum. I don't really think it should work that way, so will give Solar the chance to start again.

No it’s not a mod Wise but just a quick quest to save a captured nymph… she has been ensnared and two wizards want her for their own ends… one for love (sex actually) and the other to power a spell. There are several ways to complete it but I typically set her free (even when playing evil) she rewards you with hair that can be made into a +2 charisma cloak... speak to the wizard in front of the big wizard tower to start it.

Good News and Bad News:

Good News- BG is up and running again on my laptop.

Bad News- When I fired up Alessandra's save, she was still wearing Ankheg Plate. :(

I'll resume posting once all the catch-up is done. Again, best wishes to the actives.

Thanks. I hadn't recognised the quest from the description. I've saved her many a time, but she keeps on getting into the same situation!!! Unfortunately that happens a lot in real life due to bad choices. Posted Image

Diary of Æthelflæd
Day 2
After arranging for Gorion’s funeral, we made our way to the Friendly Arms Inn. Once there, we were attacked by a mage called Tarnesh. He cast sleep on us and Holy Avenger succumbed to it and was then attacked with magic missiles, thus losing half of his health. However, my archery skills together with my resistance to magic then came to the fore and he succumbed to my assault, aided as I was by the guards there.
Day 5
We then headed south going via High Hedge to Beregost. In high Hedge we bought a bag of holding and found the lost sword belonging to Perdue. In Beregost we helped the Dudley family, Alanna’s beau, Marl and Firebead and in the process killed yet another assassin called Karlat. We then killed the spiders at Landrin’s house and returned his possessions to him.
Day 7
We have now headed south to Nashkel, where unfortunately we met Noober. Posted Image After that we met Oublek who mistook me for Greywolf and offered me gold that was due to him. Needless to say, I refused it. We then did some babysitting for Mrs. Blackwood before heading north where we met Lord Foreshadow.
Day 8
We killed a couple of ogrillon and an over-officious member of the Flaming Fist before moving away from the road and killing hordes of hobgoblins, gibberling and ghouls.
After killing the Flaming Fist mercenary, Holy Avenger now has some good armour so fighting hand to hand with hobgoblins is no problem. I on the other hand keep well away and use my archery skills.

Just an update on Morti!

I have been rumbling about Baldur's Gate for a bit, collecting a tome of wisdom and a tome of intellect through minor quests. I have hit the level cap so I aim for useful things, mainly, while trying to stay ever carefull still letting Imoen do a lot of scouting and well.. most of the work I guess :P

We made a trip to the Iron Throne.. Imoen scouting ahead each time the stairs needed to be taken.. used her stealth and a sanctuary spell to position ourselves well on the top floor forcing them to fight us in the narrow hall:
Posted Image

Posted Image

I was slightly buffed for the fight but I nearly **** a gold brick when a flame strike somehow hit Morti and took about half his hp down, with no vision through the walls! Besides that it went smooth.

Then persuing the main story line I soon found myself in candlekeep being accused of mean things and being teleported to catacombs. I would not have gotten through those alive without Imoen:
Posted Image

Posted Image

I have always been a fan of summon skeletons.. it is an incredible summon because of their near magic immunity like here where they took down two greater basilisk without taking a scratch of damage while Imoen observes with a smile from stealth.

My eyes grew to double size when I arrived back to Baldur's Gate and made a smartass remark to Angelo.. it took a sanctuary spell to safely get her equipment back:

Posted Image

I have enjoyed taking my time for other reasons than safety, since it has been so long I played through BG1 I have been taking my time to enjoy some of the reading material along the way, too :D

Posted Image

And just before I stopped for the eve, yesteday, I made it to the undercellar to search for a guy named Slythe! I desided to record the engagement which happened just after I took this screen shot below.

Posted Image

I would really like to collect some more potions of invisibility for the last part of the game, do any of you experts know where to look if I have excausted the magic shop in BG? :?

Greetings my dear friends! My WS finally made it past the Bandit Camp, and cleared the Cloakwood with quite a solid advance! He cut down many a foe in his journey, from Bassilus:

Posted Image

To the Bandit Leaders:

Posted Image

To the Spider Queen and the Wyvern Nest:

Posted Image

Before he mad his way to the Cloakwood mines as a level 5/9 Wizard Slayer/Thief. T'was there he met a group of assassins - but just after he had slit the throat of one Mage, the other hit him with Confusion. That was the end of his journey(noticed I haven't used my Scroll of Magic Protection yet, but wanted to save it for Davaeorn).

Posted Image

Thus, I have decided to play a character I have been wanting to do for quite some time. This will be a Berserker/Mage - and hopefully he can beat the trilogy. This time around, I want to clear all the content before moving on to Baldurs Gate 2 - let's hope he got what it takes!

Meet Nimbul(Yes, I am roleplaying him somewhat in a "what if" setting, where Nimbul the assassin is actually the protagonist. The one encountered in Nashkel will be a grand illusionist-assassin that has taken the form and name of his foe.

And here he is!

Grond0 I love the Image you picked for Solar, very happy to see you give her another shot! Where did you find it?

Easymask much respect for you hanging in there with the solo wizard players haha, there are so many parts in the game that makes me think that a high amount of metagaming knowledge, and I have a feeling, luck, too is needed to pull such a run off, oi.
Edit: oh sorry to see him go down, much luck with your new character I have heard it should be a brutal class.:pinched:

Alesia_BH I so want to see your undead hunter proceed, crossing fingers things gets fixed and that she finds herself a decent looking piece of cloth again before she has to mingle in BG *cough*

I went through 7 of the poor sods, so I decided to give that part of the game a break for now. I'll be playing my new character Nimbul instead - but as I now have Berserking as a boon, I have decided to not allow any usage of Wands nor Freedom rings/potions/swords(and protection from Magic scrolls) to make up for it. That should prove as a proper challenge, though a bit easier than playing a pure Wizard Slayer.

I really hope this guy has what it takes to make it, and your run is looking very solid so far BBMorti, keep up the good work!

Edit: All is well so far, recently reached level 3 and doing well. I'm thinking I should complete most of the challenges requiring more of my "Berserker" for the first part of the game(like clearing the Gnoll Stronghold, Xvart village etc) - doing the "low-profit" experience parts first(like the spiders in Beregost and similar quests), and keep most of the quest items I pick up for when I dual-class. I'm thinking about going 7/8 Berserker/Mage, not sure if this is even possible(if so, please do tell me & I would love to know what the max level for a dual class character in BGTUTU with ToSC is - can I go 8/9 as an example? etc).

Many thanks!

With level cap on (161k) you can make 7 Berserker (64k) / 8 Mage (90k)

Nice char. Good luck with him!

@Serg BlackStrider

Thank you very much for that piece of information Serg, much appriciated!

Edit: Also some information about Nimbul:

He's a staffmaster, like Syrakul was before he died. *** in Staff and ** in Two-Handed Weapons at level 3. Hull secretly trained him in the art - as the rest of the Guard in Candlekeep are skilled with the weapon. At an early stage of his training, Nimbul learned a technique only a handful of Staff-fighters know - a state of fury and serenity combined, increasing his skill and ability with the weapon drastically when needed.

If he does well, I'm sure Nimbul will write a journal of his accomplishments.

Untill then, may Lady Luck smile to you all!

Have you looked at the other shops in Baldur's Gate?  You might find glancing at maps helpful, e.g. have a look at this one:
http://www.forgotten.../bg1/ar1100.htm

Others that immediately come to mind are the one on Jaheira in the Friendly Arm and loot from a tomb in the area you exit to from the Nashkel mines.

Grond0 I love the Image you picked for Solar, very happy to see you give her another shot! Where did you find it?

That was from the death rabbit portrait pack - I think that's on Sorceror's Place, though I'm not certain.

RIP two more attempts, don't think I had posted on either here.

First attempt was F E Sorc, with the canon party ( Imoen/Jaheria/Khalid/Minsc/Dynaheir ). We started with dagger proficiency, Sleep & Shield as the initial two spells, which wasn't an optimal choice. Sleep just wasn't ideal for some situations, throwing daggers had too low of a rate of fire for the miserable Sorc THAC0, and shield was generally not necessary 'cause if she needed shield, then the party would be doomed anyway.

Despite the slow start (and a rather scary encounter in the Xvart village that ended up with Khalid and Minsc dead and everyone else running for the exit... how embarrassing is that? ), progress seemed fairly regular, and she gained power once I reached 3rd level and had -- count 'em -- two magic missiles per spell ( 10 castings IIRC ).

Unfortunately, the full 6-person party is just too much to manage effectively. She ended up dying because a kobold picked her out ( on the Albert & Rufie map IIRC ) from the party and dropped her with two quick successive arrows, one of which was a critical.

I saved her character for another attempt, but I'll have to pick fewer companions.

Next failed attempt: F HE Cleric/Ranger. She didn't last long. I had some fun with her, and found that not only could she charm a squirrel on the High Hedge map, but (to my surprise) the squirrel actually isn't a horrible decoy, drawing off various gnolls in a chase of the squirrel while she engaged one or two herself.

Sadly, 11 HP just isn't enough, and a single halberd full damage critical took her from slightly wounded ( 10/11 ) to dead. Another character I will likely try again in the future.

Current attempt? Human Swashbuckler, focused on open locks (now) and traps (next). I plan on having Imoen focus on HS/MS until she reaches 100/100 and then dual to mage (somewhere around 6 IIRC). Xan is planned the party list, as is a cleric ( Branwen? Viconia? donno ).

I'm a little concerned about taking Scimitar as the melee proficiency (short bows as ranged), since I'm not sure how many scimitars there are in BGT-weidu outside of the one in Candlekeep, the one on the roof of Durlags (like I can get there anytime soon), one in a shop in Ulgoth's Beard, and obviously Drizzt's scimitars (which are unlikely for me to attempt).

@BBMorti- NIce work! Best of luck in the endgame!

@After5CST- I hope the Swashbuckler works out for you. I've never tried one, but I have always been curious. I'd enjoy following a run.

For what it's worth, I'd likely go with Short Swords or Daggers on a Trilogy Swashbuckler simply because I like fast blades. And of course, there are some good ones available early with those proficiencies (The Whistling Sword, Heart of the Golem).

 Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

I'm pleased to report that Alessandra is ready to resume her journey. The foreboding Cloakwood is her next target.

Current Character Record and Inventory:

Posted Image

I'll post again when she reaches the Mines.

Best,

A.

Btw 1: Alessandra's second personal item, The Ethics of Ambiguity, is now active. As mentioned, it is essentially a divine Book of Infinite Spells. The page can be turned at certain EXP thresholds. It became active at 125k EXP.

Unfortunately for Alessandra, she ended up getting the worst page possible: Unholy Blight. Aside from cooking herself and hastening her fall to the dark-side, there is little she can do with that spell. The book with often appear in her quick-slot nonetheless.

Btw 2: It occurred to me that I've never mentioned Alessandra's proficiencies. Here they are...

Proficiencies: Darts, Long Swords (x2), Short Bows, Quarterstaves, Two-Handed Weapon Style.

I can explain the reasoning if there is interest.:)

@BBMorti- If you haven't collected them already, there are two Potions of Invulnerability just sitting in houses. One is in Beregost, the other in Baldur's Gate. There's also the Sandthief Ring for sale in Ulgoth's Beard of course. It's expensive, but it can be a good investment in some play throughs.

@Gate70- No evidence of the hideousness of Ankheg Plate you mean? Just wait. Your set is on it's way to your house. Once it arrives, all you'll have to do is suit up and take some pics - being sure to catch the backside in at least a few. The world will have all the evidence it needs after that...

Glad to have you back Alesia! I'm getting characters killed left and right, this solo buisness sure is hard!

This time around Nimbul, my 7/7 Berserker/Mage cleared out the Bandit Camp leaders - only to get killed by the trap I had forgotten. The initial hit didn't kill me - but I couldn't see that it changed direction just as I stepped back and it hit me a second time. I will be 100% sure to remember that one hencefort, that's for sure.

I'll see if I can do better with write-ups. I haven't managed (yet) to figure out how to take screen shots in my VirtualBox VM on a MacBook Pro (long story, but even what I've googled has yet to work), so it may just be text anecdotes as I have done so far.

In picking out the melee proficiency, I ruled out Short Swords because I plan to have Imoen around, and she has that proficiency covered.  Since backstabs are unavailable to Swashbucklers, I thought that weapon speed was less important, but I can certainly be convinced otherwise!

My thought process on thief weapons for a swashbuckler (feel free to edu-ma-cate me!):
  • Short swords : actually, pretty good in BG1.  But Imoen has this covered, and she's going to be the back-stabber anyway.
  • Long swords:  good choices here, too.  Since I haven't settled on a party fighter yet, though, I wondered if I should go this route, or save long swords for whoever ends up being the tank (assuming they can).
  • Katanas: none in BG1 via vanilla bgt-weidu (at least that I know of), so ignored.
  • Daggers: Some good choices here, as well.  In particular, I've never played around with the Dagger of Venom and have wondered if it would be worth going this route.  No NPCs I am aware of with any real combat ability use daggers, either, which is a plus.
  • Short Bows: Lots of great ammo, some good bows too.  Taken.  I could argue crossbow as another choice, see below.
  • Scimitar/Wakizashi/Ninja-to: Available at Candlekeep (scimitar).  Good +2 weapon available in ToSC.  No NPCs (that I am aware of) take Scimitar.  Currently selected, although considering editing the character for a different proficiency while still early in the game.
  • Darts:  Recently played a D F/T with darts (including the debatle STR bonus).  The biggest problems I had with darts are (1) the increased rate of fire increases the odds of a AI opponent selecting you (depending on their script) as their target, which may be bad for the Protag, (2) without the STR bonus, the increased rate of fire does not make up for their reduced damage potential, and (3) magical ammo didn't seem very common (but did seem rather expensive).
  • Light Crossbow:  Considered, but bows generally have better ammo available.  Still wondering about it for BG1, because of the Light Crossbow of Speed.  A few NPCs have this proficiency, but not anybody I would seriously consider taking on this run.

I would really like to collect some more potions of invisibility for the last part of the game, do any of you experts know where to look if I have excausted the magic shop in BG?

Here are places with Potions of Invisibility available:
-East section of the City, Sorcerous Sundries
-SE section of the City, 2 Potion Shops
-SW section of the City, 2 Potion Shops
-N section of the City, Rinnie's (who wants Book of Unicorn Run) house, second floor in a chest

Potion Shop's inventories may *mirror* each other but worth a try at least...

@After5CST

Daggers: Some good choices here, as well.  In particular, I've never played around with the Dagger of Venom and have wondered if it would be worth going this route.  No NPCs I am aware of with any real combat ability use daggers, either, which is a plus.

[/list]I personally often choose Jaheira to use Dagger of Venom or Scimitar +2. That way she may use shield and sling when needed without *messing with inventory*

And truth to be told I never consider weapon speed is irrelevant and insignificant: strike first - live longer:wizard: And even with all those Swashbucklers' fighting abilities he isn't a fighter and need to be *quick and nimble*
