Gosh EasyMask I wish I could tell you.. I located the zip file I have and it just have some portraits and a voice set called 'Fenix' .. if that is any clue... I downloaded a fair amount of portrait packs when I looked to join this challenge. I was looking forward to using this one, too, I am glad you and ussnorway seem to like it as much as me! :)

If you want I can send the zip file to an e-mail adress of your chosing, always an option. Just drop it here and let me know, goes for all you guys. It is a small pack of about hm 10 or so portraits but they are of high quality imo.

Congratulations on completing this first step ussnorway!

Thank you Alisia_bh! Loved the footage of the fight, you had left little holes to be found in your prep's for it :)

Alayna is doing the usual startup sweep of simple to do quests, not much to report for her yet.. and I must admit I have been a bit too focused on Role Playing her and keeping her out of harm to remember to snap a few screens along the way :P
Image IPB

She picked up a mage ring and sold it in high hedge and picked up a wand of sleep.. and have delivered a book to firebeard, talked her way out of a fight in a bar and hopefully I will be picking up boots of stealth here soon, the same way Asmodai did, may he rest in peace :?

 UPDATE: Jill, H F L2 Swashbuckler
DAY 3:
After Imoen and I fled from a rather hungry dire wolf who was anxiously eyeing us as dinner, we worked our way to the Friendly Arm Inn.  Along the way we found a magic ring that somebody had hidden under a rock (imagine that!).
As we reached the Inn -- which looked a lot more like a castle -- Imoen and I met Joia, who asked us to hunt down some hobgoblins near the inn and recover her ring.  Using our bows, we cautiously approached the hobgoblins, and then slew them with arrows when it was obvious they were not in a talking mood.

Not only did we recover her ring, but Imoen and I are now the somewhat proud owners of a pair of leather jerkins.  Imoen spent the night washing the hobgoblin stink off of the jerkins, and I did some stitching so they would fit us a bit better.

Strangely enough, in the morning we found yet *another* magic ring hidden under yet *another* rock.  Somebody had too many magical items on their hands, that's for sure.  Returning the flamedance ring to Joia, she gave us thanks and warned us that somebody suspicious seemed to be asking questions about a pair of young girl wanderers.  Unsure of who it was, Imoen and I decided instead of approaching the Inn to start heading South to Beregost, in an attempt to be harder to find in a little larger city.

It was deja vu (all over again) as we were once again attacked by a pair of wolves, one of which was a dire wolf.  I was for running again, but Imoen refused to budge this time and started shooting arrows as quickly as she could.  We consumed three of our precious healing potions, but managed to take the wolf pack down.  It was a good day!

Thanks.

The video is actually a bit misleading when it comes to prep. It gives the impression that she was ready for combat when the character record was shown but that was actually a mid buff scroll. She drank almost all of the potions that appear in the inventory shot before actually heading in.

Drasus's Morningstar was covered by Potion of Absorption + Girdle of Bluntness. The ranged fire was covered by Cloak of Displacement + Claw of the Kazgaroth. The disablers, were handled by the Greenstone Amulet. 100% Resistance to Fire and Elecitricity covered Fireballs and Lightning Bolts. Shield, Magic Missles. Pro Acid and The Horn of the Kazgaroth were supposed to cover COrbs and Acid Arrows. Boots of the North and a reserved Potion of Cold Resistance were for Cones of Cold. Genthore's Slashing attacks were viable, but he's kind of a chump.

Unsurprisingly, Alessandra ended up getting nipped by some Cold, Acid, and ranged Critical Hits. Most of the damage ended up coming from that fracking Horn though...

She was tying to use it to counter en route Acid Arrows and was a little late on the trigger each time. So, basically, she ended up adding 10Hp of damage to each Acid Arrow while shutting off subsequent opportunities for a couple rounds. Not an outstanding use of Aura that's for sure...

Not sure what she'll do with The Horn going forward...

Best,

A.

Btw. After5CST- I commented on Easymask and Morti's portraits but I do really like Jill's too. I also love how her portrait matches her avatar. That's neat. :)

Thanks for the kind comments on Jill's portraits, all. I actually found the portrait when I was starting character creation for something else ( a Paladin IIRC ), and I just liked the portrait enough (hood and all!) I built the character around it.

Lots of good portraits in the threads lately, I like pretty much all of 'em (and don't have any of them). Lots of thieves running around in current attempt, as well.

I wasn't aware the hooded thief was tied to wearing armor. She started the game sans armor (buying that scimitar took pretty much every copper she had), and I was surprised and disappointed that she didn't have a hood. I wrote it off until one of the hobgoblins was killed and I put on the leather armor: and suddenly, she had a hood.

if there's any good sites for portraits, I'd like to find 'em.

Jill will have to wait now until the weekend, but she's been fun so far. At least until the healing potions run out. She's the first character I've ever re-started rather than just trying somebody new. (Minor cheat in the game: I did move Imoen's 20 points out of Find Traps into Hide in Shadows IIRC, as I wanted her to focus on HS/MS rather than FT/OL).

I've almost settled on a party of four, with Jill (thief), Imoen (scout, secondary mage eventually), Xan (primary mage), and Branwen (healer/tank). If hanging out with three attractive young ladies doesn't break Xan out of his funk, I don't know what will.

Still thinking about it, though.

@Alesia_BH : What exactly is the Horn good for, anyway? I've never messed with it.

Solar No. 3 is still going, though she's had a couple of close escapes.  Work done includes saving a cow, befriending Bentan (who was immediately killed by kobolds), taking bracers from Meilum, talking to Noober, getting a ring from Lord Foreshadow, teaching Neira not to lurk (only wild surge so far was here and the spell cast normally through it), saving Oopah from a thankless life, ending Vitiare's pickpocketing career and revenging a dead mage on Zordral.  Zordral caused the first problem when he slept Solar.  This left the quasit on his own against Zordral and a couple of summoned monsters.  Fortunately there was just enough space in the tent to run round and the quasit managed to stay alive long enough to see off the summons and then wait for Solar to wake up.  With Zordral out of spells he was then doomed.

She then headed for the Nashkel mines.  The quasit did a lot of the work here as his regeneration quickly heals lost HPs and kobolds don't have the firepower to one-shot him.  However, the kobold chieftain is quite capable of killing him so Solar gave a hand here.  This was nearly unfortunate when she took a poisoned hit and was down in single figure HPs.  The chief's poison works very fast so healing potions would do no good, but she did have an antidote handy.

Solar wanted to rest before taking on Mulahey and had to deal with 2 spawned groups of kobolds before succeeding.  One of them had run away into the cave and Solar went in and out several times trying to hit it.  I hadn't noticed in the course of this that Mulahey had activated and he followed her out of the cave before talking to her - I think that's only the second time I've ever seen that happening.  All his summons appeared strung out along the wall (mainly out of shot here) and took no part in the combat with Mulahey.  Mulahey eventually went down, providing Solar with her fifth level and a welcome extra 5 HPs.

The horn provides immunity to first and second level spells, but only for 3 rounds and at a cost of 10 HP damage to the user each time.  There are situations where this is very helpful for closing off a potential vulnerability.  The main spells that cause death for solo characters are sleep, fear, charm, hold and confusion and the green amulet protects against all of these.  Elemental damage is also relatively easy to protect against, but chromatic orb from mages and command from priests is more difficult and that's where the horn comes in.

Although it can be useful the short duration makes it hard to use in practice (which Alesia referred to) and the HP damage on the user makes it a bit unsafe for characters like mages with low HPs.  Therefore there probably won't be many people who really want to make use of it.

Dwinn, NE halfling male kensai.

Nashkel mine is tough. Kobolds are hitting me hard 10-12 on criticals, forcing me to rest more than I want. I take a couple of traps on a bridge then dodge three more. Mulahey is next and as usual I've forgotten potions so potential game-ender due to risk factor.

He's still casting.

His minions injure me 31/50 at end so I heal myself 39 and deal with the ochre jellies.

Not again.

Very useful information from Grond0 there, even though it wasn't aimed at me; I did learn a lot from it! And well done with Solar so far Grond0, looking good!
Not to mention BBmorti and After5SCT's thieves, well done to you both - and keep up the good work!

But now, without further adeu - I introduce my second Thief: Asmodai II! He's a bit stronger than his predecessor, but a little less charismatic. Like his "older brother", Asmodai II has a keen intellect and is skilled with the Short Bow. I'm not sure if I will dual-class him to Mage at some point - but you never know!

As you search through the posessions of a fresh kill, you come across a journal that seems somewhat out of place. As you open the first page, you notice that it yields nothing but empty pages. As you are about to close it and throw it away, you notice something very strange on the first page. Words are being scribbled down - but without the aid of neither pen nor hand.

The journal of Asmodai II - Day 21, 1369.
I have recently returned to Beregost - after quite the "bountiful harvest" to the east of the Arm. I encountered a creature quite unlike the rest of the Undead; a ghoul named Korax. Before I put an arrow through him, he yelled out that he wanted to be my friend! Insanity.

I told him that I would get very angry with him if he tried to eat me. He seemed to accept that rule, then aided me in my hunt for Basilisks. Talk about luck, huh?

The scroll of Protection from Petrification I purchased from the Carnival sure came in handy, even though Korax took most of the hits. I'll miss the poor sod, seeing as he met his end fighting some Bounty Hunters that where looking for me. Bought me enough time to escape though, can't really complain then.

Got the blacksmith in town to help me out with the Shortsword I found. That knogoblin never knew what sword it was carrying, that much I know. Turns out it's the Whistling Sword! I'll be sure to put it to good use.

I'm considering heading down to the Nashkel Mines soon, seems to be some trouble there - if the rumors are true. Might make a lot of gold from it, if I can solve the problem somehow... And I do need that armor the blacksmith has been trying to sell me since I got here.

Will write more later.

Asmodai II

As you finish reading the page, you notice how the scribbling has stopped. You decide to put the journal away - and take a look at it later.

Asmodai II's statistics and current level(7):

Darn, Alayna died to the bounty hunter in Beregost at the red sheaf.. she stealthed in and made a backstab with her venom ability on the weapon and then ran upstairs while the poison was doing its thing... well he followed her upstairs and she did not manage to manoeuvre around him and down again so he made a swing at her which must have been one nasty crit.. she had 24 hp at the time and was instantly killed regardless. Very sad to hear that BBMorti, and I know how you feel. Asmodai attempted to get the Book of Constitution and had placed traps inside the cavern for the golems - but when there where a few left, he retreated back out and got hit with a charm spell before I could get the necklace off.

Will be thinking hard about my next character!

Announcing;  Puk’ Darkstar (Tyrion Lannister) is the younger foster brother of A’lisia O'dare & was incorrectly labelled a Gnome when he first came to live at candlekeep. Some people now believe that fact to have been a clever deception after a failed (poisoning) assassination attempt. Puk' is goal ordinated (almost psychotically so) & maintains that destiny has something special in store for him but he also has a strong friendship & possibly a slight adolescent crush… with Imoen who unfortunately only looks upon him as something of a younger brother… actually they are the exact same age. The strong bond between them traces its foundations from a valuable (moonblade) gift which Imoen ‘picked-up’ for him in payment for some magic tutoring, regardless… Puk' has now recovered from his poisoning & disregarding the dire warnings of others has set off alone in search of his precious Imoen!

Once again, Grond0 and I are on the same page here. :)

The Horn has some very specific uses. For my purposes, it could be protentially helpful for: 1) early COrb defense (making the save is typically the most straighforward approach against COrb due to the massive bonus, however there are times when the horn might be a better early choice on budgetting grounds.); 2) protecting buffs from Acid Arrows (If you get tagged by too many MAAs, it can complicate damage management. In some cases, you can be forced to dispell the MAAs with a Potion of Magic Blocking. That will work, however, it will also dispell your buffs. The Horn provides an alternate way of dealing with Acid Arrows. Using The Horn for this purpose is tricky though).

@BBMorti- Sorry to hear about Alayna. :(

Hard luck BBMorti, but it's always a good idea to know what you're missing (death in this caseImage IPB).  The trouble with upstairs is the very limited room for manouvre.  Hiding behind the pillars downstairs is extremely effective - Karlat's slow weapon speed means he will never get an attack on you even if he does happen to find you and the pillars make it easy to set up missile shots on him.

Solar's day in the sun has ended. She dispatched Nimbul and Tranzig and was on her way north to the Friendly Arm Inn (for the first time), carrying Samuel's body, when ambushed by the amazons. Lamalha spoke, but did not then turn hostile. A few runs ago the amazons appeared not to spawn properly and I thought this was the same behaviour so set off round the map to go and confront the ogre with the belt. Regrettably it seems that Lamalha was only suffering from slow reactions (I know the feeling) and Solar found herself on the wrong end of a backstab.

Edit: still limited impact from wild surges.  Only 1 more of these noted and that was a fake explosion.  I'll probably have another try at a wild mage, but mix it up with something else first.

 Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

My characters usually skip Hareisham. However, upon request from Easymask, I had Alessandra avenge Loken's death. Here's a little video:

The song that accompanies it is Freak Magnet by L7.

Davaeorn will be next.

A.

Btw. Just as tactical note, you may have observed that Alessandra has been using Varscona and the Shield in the mines. Drasus's Boots of Speed forced that approach in the first battle, the close-quarters and multiple enemies in the second. She'll likely go back to Aule's Staff against Davaeorn and his Battle Horrors.

This was an accidental post, but I might as well use it since I can't delete it...

@Grond0- When I was fiddling around with my Wild Mage Alai, I noted that wilth Auto Pause: Spell Cast active, there was a window between notification and Wild Surge effect. It is possible to equip resistance items in that window. And while I didn't try it, you may be able to quaff potions. It could be worth trying.

Anyhoo. Best of luck!

Diary of Æthelflæd:
Æthelflæd: Chaotic Good; Fighter/Thief; Svirfneblin; Str 18/98; Dex 19; Con 17; Int 19; Wis 18; Cha 05.
Holy Avenger: Lawful Good; Cavalier; Teifling; Str 18/44; Dex 19; Con 18; Int 19; Wis 15; Cha 18.
Day 2

I was quite surprised to become friends with Holy Avenger, particularly as he is a paladin whilst I am a thief. However I soon realised that we had quite a lot in common. Whilst we might go about things in a different way, we were both on the side of righteousness. As well as that we were both oddballs as far as our race was concerned. In Candlekeep Jondalar hurt me badly, but Holy Avenger laid hands on me to enable me to carry on. It is ironic that a friend hurt me far more than my enemies did. We left Candlekeep together, and after being ambushed, we made our way back there to arrange for his burial. On the way we were attacked by three ogres none of whom survived. Holy Avenger was badly hurt, but was able to heal himself once they had been dispatched.
Day 3
We then made our way to The Friendly Arms Inn as per Gorion’s instructions. We were attacked by a mage called Tarnesh who hurt us badly. However he died and Holy Avenger was again able to heal himself. Landrin gave us some potions to help us deal with an infestation of spiders in his home in Beregost. We continued northwards to find Joia’s ring for her.
Day 4
As our enemies clearly knew Gorion’s plans, I have decided not to follow his advice for the moment, but will instead head for Baldur’s Gate where I can perhaps hide in the city. WE were ambushed by three ghasts which we dispatched with some difficulty. I had to use one of our precious healing potions as I was not sure that I could survive until Holy Avenger could heal me. [ The improved AI certainly made the battle a lot harder] We were attacked by some bandits who quickly succumbed to our attack and Holy Avenger reached level 2. We then helped Leila start a new life and agreed to help Sonner who is being harassed by a priest of Umberlee.
Day 5
Upon meeting the Priestess of Umberlee, we discovered that she was ust a child and that Sonner had killed her mother, but before that we got into conflict with her and were lucky to survive. Holy Avenger was held, and if she had not called a halt to proceedings, she might well have defeated us. I agreed to help her, but before doing so, will wait for the spell to wear off.
Day 6
We retrieved the bowl from Sonner and returned it to Tenya. Upon trying to enter Baldur’s Gate, we found the entrance barred and will therefore have to change our plans. I reached level 2 as a thief, and am now a little better at pickpocketing.
Day 9
We headed north to Ulgoth’s Beard and discovered that the inn there is very well stocked with items for sale, probably because the people there have been raiding Durlag’s Tower. I have been asked to go there myself and retrieve a dagger. Unfortunately at present we cannot afford the items at the inn. I did however “acquire” a ring that Holy Avenger will probably find useful against ghasts and the like.

Thanks - that's interesting.  I don't normally use that auto pause and hadn't noticed that, but perhaps I should make use of it in future.  Presumably though the benefit would be limited to equipping items rather than drinking potions (as the surge follows on from a spell being cast and I don't think there is that much of a delay).

You might be able to drink one potion. There's only one way to find out.
Could you let us know one way or the other if you test it.

That's my guess as well. Between the window duration and the Aura issues it probably won't work and that's primarily why I didn't get around to testing it.

It seems worth trying if you intend to keep working with Wild Mages though. :)

PUKUD1;

@Wise, The current version of SCS is 19 & you appear to be using V12. I’m not saying that’s causing the crash but I certainly doubt that its helping matters… just a thought.

Image IPB

Week 1; After surviving the opening ambush & running away from a shapeshifter (disguised as Imoen) I made my way to FAI where another assassin tried to ambush me but it’s a rare human that spots Puk’ first and a quick spell put the luckless lackey to 'sleep'… permanently! Jaheira recalled Imoen discussing the mines south of Nashkel & generously offered to guide me… tempting but I’ll travel faster alone so I thanked her for the advice & the Potion of Invisibility she gave me then set off on the south road.

Quick Note on Alessandra's Game:

Alessandra has dealt a savage beating to the punk know as Davaeorn. The Iron Throne is none-to-pleased.

I've composed a video on the battle, but I'm afraid it wasn't much of a fight. Davaeorn and the Battle Horrors were completely stumped. Here it is nonetheless.

The song that goes with this one is Packin' a Rod by The Fiends as covered by L7.

For the curious, the buffs here were Pro Acid, Pro Fire, Pro Electricity, Pro Cold, Potion of Fire Resistance, Potion of Defense, Potion of Heroism, Potion of Cloud Giant Strength, Potion of Magic Shielding, and Shield.

I'll post more once Alessandra arrives in the big city.

Best,

A.

It might work if you're casting through Nahal's Reckless Dweomer, iirc, that's one of the spells (CC is another) that doesn't cloud your aura for that round. I don't know if it's intentional, but it's certainly overpowered.

Yeah. I'm guessing Grond0 isn't planning on inviting Wild Surges though in BG1. :)

I agree that the non-aura clouding spell equivalent actions may provide some useable defensive options in BG2. They are likely one of the keys to getting the Wild Mage right in the No Reload context.
