Good luck with your 4 man team -- I've really good results with 4 man teams in BG 1 -- if your PC gets held, it's not necessarily over, your party members might be able to save you. The faster leveling (vs. 6 man party) is nice too. And last but not least, you can often reach the level cap even without going to TotSC areas, which is great for mages/bards/thiefs.

Perhaps you already know about it, but the Suna Sunei ambush is real important for a thief because of the Arbane's sword (immune to hold person). But you were playing SCS right? Considering I've NEVER done a solo no-reload of Amn, I'm not ready for that solo, though probably am if I do a party format.

Thank you Corey! Aye, I've already completed BG1 in this No Reload challenge with a four man crew earlier, but that was without SCS installed - that's why I wanted to try all over again with the soloers I've been creating thus far in the thread. Two fighter/thieves have made it to amn so far, Loken II and Verenor - but Loken II got hit with Rayic Gethras' Death Spell, and Verenor died to that hold spell from the pesky slaver. I had two points in Short Swords on Verenor for when I would get the Arbane's Sword, but I did not know the Mages would be casting Hold Person. I'm playing with only Baldurs Gate 1 spells in Baldurs Gate 1 - which is actually making me sloppy for when I enter Baldurs Gate 2!

Edit: Perhaps Mages actually do cast Hold Person in Baldurs Gate 1, I'm not sure - but with no stone skins around, I usually backstabbed the Mages before they got any spells off. At the point where I was fighting multiple Mages, I had the Spider Sword anyways. As with Loken II, I do believe I was thinking Baldurs Gate 1 and not Baldurs Gate 2 when I entered the Slavers Den.

Off-hand I know Davaeorn in BG 1 has hold person in his spell script. In BG 1, mages love confusion, and the clerics there love hold person (and with good reason...)

Aye, I used a charge from the ring of invisibility to get the traps before going for Davaeorn, and seeing as he teleports all the time gave me enough time to Hide in Shadows every time he did. That encounter is very easy even with SCS installed - for a solo Thief/Fighter, by my experience at least! The lack of stoneskin really does make most of the Mage encounters trivial, as you easily have enough stealth for backstabbing them by using the ring or potions.

Good luck with your new party, Easymask!

Update on human Necromancer Thazmudyn:
Thazmudyn managed to sneak into the old pirate cave near lighthouse. Although the cave is populated with Flesh Golems, Thazmudyn obtained tome increasing constitution and emerged unscathed. Just south of Lighthouse area, Thazmudyn found commander Brage, cured him and took him back to Nashkel.
In Cloudpeak region, Thazmudyn helped Albert+Ruffie, Cloudpeak Dryad and Drienne. On the other hand, he was forced to kill Sendai, Zal and Vax.
Next, Thazmudyn probed Gnoll Fortress. He obtained important item – Gauntlets of Dexterity. In one of the caves, he also found tome increasing charisma.
North of Gnoll Fortress, Thazmudyn helped Laurel fight Gibberlings, protected Jared from Mountain Bear, killed Bandit Neville and several Ogres.
Image IPB

He then continued to the Xvart village. Thazmudyn exterminated all Xvarts and two Cave Bears.
On the way back to Nahkel, Thazmudyn was ambushed by Ogre Mage. It cost him precious charge of the Wand of Monster Summoning, but he survived the ambush. Though Ogre Mage hit him with Melf’s Acid Arrow, Thazmudyn responded with Larloch’s Minor Drain and Magic Missiles.
Image IPB

Once again, Thazmudyn returned to the area just south of Lighthouse. There, he helped archeologists find statued of Kozah and killed Doomsayer.
He finally gathered enough firepower to visit (albeit briefly) Durlag’s Tower. Battle Horrors were dispelled, blocked with one pack of summons and killed with Flame Arrows and Magic Missiles. In the Tower, Thasmudyn killed numerous Ghasts, helped succubus Kirinhale, killed Riggilo and obtained tome increasing wisdom.
Image IPB
Thazmudyn is currently level 8 Necromancer with 41 hp.

Final update for Slider.
- after stealthing through the Iron Throne he headed for Candlekeep.  Scroll of magic protection and potion giant strength let him rob the tombs.  He waved to the basiliks on the way out.
- back in the City Cythandria cunningly kept turning round to avoid the back-crunch, but a hit + potion firebreath still made her give up.
- in the Undercellar Slythe was outmatched by Larze
- before the fight at the palace Slider did a bit of reputation management and rested to get Divine Wrath Bhaal power (not actually used in BG1, but handy for BG2).
- buffed up with potions for the first time Slider was too strong for the greater dopplegangers - both dukes survived.
- Slider gave Sarevok & co. just a tiny sliver of hope by not using scroll of magic protection.  Diarmid got a few arrows in early on, but then Angelo was separated and dealt with.  Some exploding arrows then caused havoc for the remainder; one arrow killing both Tazok and Diarmid.  Sarevok was treated to a festival of back-crunching.

Here is Slider's final information sheet and stats.  The only moment of danger in the run was the ambush by a basilisk (@Vaclavc - these ambushes are not normally a problem for a solo character as I know where the basilisk will appear and am out of range before it can target me.  The problem with Slider was that I didn't realise he was going to the wrong area and had already started to move closer to the basilisk before spotting the dangerImage IPB).

Alright. I have no idea what's going on to be perfectly honest with you guys... I am actually at a loss of words at what is going on today. First Verenor dies to a Slaver Mage - then this happens:

Image IPB

I just don't know what happened. The party was around level 4 when I decided I would try to brave Ulcaster. We killed the Revenant outside quite easily, while Kazim cast his two Sleep spells on the horde of Kobolds that accompanied him. Dispatching them, we moved into the ruins and fought off another rather large Kobold spawn - as well as three Ghasts whom Borgael had to drink his last 5 potions against. I decided that my party needed to rest after that, which I really shouldn't have done. Borgael was already weak at this point, as was Miyuki from the previous fight - thus resulting in them both being killed by a storm of Kobold arrows(there must have been at the very least 15 of the runts - easily!).

Seeing that I couldn't really leave behind all their gear, as I had just kitted both of them up with what gold I had scraped together at that point - Kazim threw a Horror scroll at the lousy buggers, and I decided that the two of them surely could handle the kobolds with their bow and crossbow. I managed to kill two or three when the horror broke - MUCH earlier than I had anticipated. They focused on getting down Verenor II first, and blocked off the items so I couldn't pick them up and run - so I decided to run nonetheless. With 2 hitpoints or so left, I was hoping we would get away - when the last arrow hit Verenor II in his back, and killed him. As I was lying there, Kazim was killed as well...

This is starting to get quite frustrating! Back to the old drawing board yet again, second time today.

At least I had a good workout at the gym today.. bleh..

'tis a shame as well, because I really did like this party - everything from the portraits to the classes. Oh well.

Edit: Oh and my appologies: Congrats Grond0! Your run was very good, if I may say so - and I truly enjoyed following it! Good luck in Amn!

why pick on invis targets but leave stealth alone?

The logic there would be that they can still hear you and thus get a fix on your position if you cast an invisibility spell but but not if you are Hidden in Shadows and Moving Silently.

p.s.  I can see your point, that invis needs to be cut back a bit.

Yeah. And when enemies cast invisibility spells, I usually figure out where they are based on the footprint sounds and touch. I don't mind enemies doing the same thing. The follow script doesn't seem like a cheat to me, rather it seem closer to symmetry. But again: I understand why others see it differently.

The only thing I don't like about it is that it seems to bog my sluggish computer down when loads of enemies are using it (like when Ashoka ended up fighting everything on the underdark map at the same time).

polytope wrote...
The invisibility state is set equally by stealth and spell, so can't be differentiated by AI scripts (which need to check for a stat or a state or something like that, rather than whether or not the effect is dispellable or originating from a specific spell school - as opcodes do). The invisibility spell (and potion, and ring etc.) would need to be re-labelled to be identifiable, as detectable spells mod already does with quite a few other effects.

Improved Invisibility sets STATE_IMPROVEDINVISIBILITY, Sanctuary sets stat SANCTUARY to 1 and Mislead sets stat PUPPETTYPE to 1, so these variants can all currently be detected by scripts.

Thanks Polytope. That's what I wanted to know!

Cheers,

A.

Btw. Sorry for the off topic chatter everyone! Best of luck to the new entrants!

@Vaclavc

I had no idea how hard that ambush was as hard as it was. Verenor II & Loken II had no difficulty clearing most of the Kobolds in the Nashkel Mines, then again they where wearing plate at the time IIRC.

It's about time I pull out the big guns for this challenge, as I have quite the number of characters that are in due to be avenged.

Please allow me to introduce; the Dawnstriders
Image IPB

Led by the foster son of Gorion; Horus the swift and deadly Monk
Image IPB

And his followers;
Tyrosus "Helmringer", the Half-Orc Fighter/Cleric
Image IPB

Hazil the Gnome Illusionist/Thief - like his brother Kazim
Image IPB

Nathara the Elven Archer
Image IPB

It's about high time to avenge the fallen - and I will be sure to do my very best to lead this party of hearty adventurers to fame, fortune - and victory!

Good Luck Easy Mask in your new run. Even us veterans, every now and then will get a spite of bad runs. Partly due the randomness of various elements in BG, and due to the length of the BG Saga, it really tests one element of humanity (humans err). I think once I had 3 no-reloads end in a 2 day span, and that wasn't long ago.

Whenever possible, I rest in inns or known safe areas (FAI, Carnival), partly due the fact you can get quite a few spawns like you did. FYI: Sleep wand might have saved your behind in Ulcaster it has quite a few charges and would work pretty well on kobolds and doesn't hurt you either (like a fireball wand might). Not too expensive either...

Ah yes, hoarding it, let's see..would that be like a man diagnosed with cancer, he can save his life if he did a 10,000 dollar operation -- he declines, and next week dies -- what did he gain again? What use will his money be to him dead?

I logically agree with corey_russell, but my actions prove I am a dyed-in-the-wool hoarder. As does my current perfect record ( 0 and ??? ) in the challenge.:P

After5CST -- I had many failed challenges before my first successful one (maybe a dozen) -- The other thing is are you enjoying the extra challenge of "no takebacks" (chess/checkers term) - because if you are, then your score doesn't matter. I sure do, even when I fail. Also lends itself more to stories better, e.g. "We attacked Drassus and my party was wiped due to a confusion cast by a mage" or would you rather hear, "I set the level to easy. I re-loaded about 20 times then we crushed Drassus and buddies! Yeah!".

Kobolds. I really do hate Kobolds.
We did most of the quests that is quite easily doable before we entered the Nashkel mines, everyone was around level 4 at this point - and clearing out the kobold infested mines was not difficult. Our only real problem occured when Hazil decided to step on the trap he was going to disarm, in the area right before Mulahey. Everyone where quite weak at this point, so I decided I had to brave a rest - as there was no way I could get past the remaining two traps with Tyrosus with a mere 10 hitpoints left.

I placed my characters so that Tyrosus could guard them before I rested, and we dispatched with one Kobold spawn quite easily. Then we had another that locked us down, forcing us to fight - kobolds on once side, traps on the other. Horus took quite a few arrows before I could react, resulting in his untimely death.

Image IPB

I am feeling very unskilled and unpracticed at this point. Most of the characters I've played to this point of the game, have snuck by the Kobolds and killed Mulahey quite easily. I'm not giving up though, there's no way I am. I probably should have waited a few levels before entering the mines, seeing as everyone where quite unlucky with their HP rolls. Tyrosus had around 27 hp at that point, while Hazil had around 15-19. I did have the Wand of Paralyzation this time around, but I didn't get a chance to use it before Horus went down.

Kobolds 2, Easymask 0..

Hard luck Easymask. It's easy to underestimate kobolds because they're worth so little XP, but the kobold archers are one of the bigger challenges in BG1. You might want to experiment with the wand of sleep, which lots of people swear by. Personally I've found the necklace of missiles more useful for dealing with kobold clumpss!

@Grond0
Aye, I had both of those for when this happened, but I was scared the Necklace would kill us all if I used it. I'm not too good with the area of effect on it yet, so I didn't want to take any chances. The wand of sleep is the one from High Wind right? If that's the case, that is the wand I had with me. Unfortunatley it was in my backpack, as I had recently picked it up from Hazil. I didn't get a chance to use it, as all the initial arrows where already headed for Horus - killing him instantly.

Back to the task at hand though:
Enough is enough. Those blasted Kobolds have made me quite insane, and thus I'd like to introduce a group purely created from insanity:

Arvan the Human Wizard Slayer
Image IPB

Miyuki II the Human Kensai from Kara-Tur
Image IPB

Imoen, as you all know her - and we will be picking up Minsc as well(Kagain just recently died after taking three Hobgoblin swords to the face at the same time, so I'll pick up Ajantis untill I feel ready about picking Minsc up and clearing the Gnoll Stronghold).

This is pure madness of course, but I'd like to play some characters that I know will be weak - thus perhaps limiting myself by being forced to play more defensive. Miyuki will be dual-classed to Mage eventually, and Arvan to Thief(at that point I'll be swapping out Imoen for either Jaheira, Anomen, Edwin or even Jan Jansen).

I'll be sure to post an update on their adventure if they make it to Baldurs Gate!

Short update on the Madness Run;

After killing Vax & Zhal, we proceeded to fight Delgod, Alexander and Sendai(I hope her namesake wont be as hard as that encounter turned out to be!) - resulting in the death of first Ajantis(wich is by far the worst tank I have ever seen, sporting a solid 24 hitpoints at level 3) - followed by the death of Miyuki II as she tried to claim his gear while the rest of us fled. Two arrows then hit Arvan, reducing his hitpoints to 15 out of 30.

Image IPB

My initial plan was to hit them all with the wand of sleep, wich failed on all three. Sendai was barely injured, and delgod was at aprox 50% when we headed out of the map. Imoen managed to save Miyuki's wand of sleep & Necklace of Blasting(wich I had forgot that I had for this fight) - but Ajantis' Ankheg Armor and potions worth about 2-3000 gold where left behind(not to mention his helmet, shield and warhammer).

Edit: Come to think of it, must have been more: 3 Flasks of Mirroring, 1 Potion of Heroism, 3 Antidotes, 3 Elixirs of Health, a potion of Stone Giant Strength and 3 Healing Potions.

Not able to afford a ress for Ajantis, the three adventurers sold off a winter wolf pelt to get him back on his feet, and are now in Naskhel trying to find out what they should do next.

Hard luck, Easymask. The problem with the kobolds is that if they interrupt your rest, you really can't stop them from getting an attack off, so they can often spike your main character before you can do anything. The only real thing is to have him/her wear the Girdle of Piercing and to have more health (this is why I waited until like L6 or something ridiculous to do the mines).

EDIT: Sendai and co are the ones with the bows, right? They're actually one of the tougher groups, IMO. You really need some anti-ranged stuff, and Sleep mightn't cut it.

Meanwhile, Arzamraphel is progressing in SoBH. However, clicking at any of the map edges brings up the world map screen, allowing me to travel to other BG areas, but not SoBH areas. Is this supposed to happen? Was I supposed to install the World Map mod? So far I've been able to go up to the castle, and south to the rat area, but nowhere else.

Aye, the two archers and the Long Sword +1 wielding hag! I usually dispose of them quite easily early on, just for the stacks of +1 arrows and the Studded Leather Armor +2. The problem this time though, is that I don't have a good tank - after Kagain died and Minsc out of reach untill I'm ready to do the Gnoll Stronghold; I had to settle with Ajantis. His 13 Dexterity give him a horrible armor save, even in Ankheg Plate(not to mention his strength 17 which makes him a bad damage dealer as well. So far he's gotten 10 kills in 7 days 22 hours..)

@Easymask: As corey said, every no-reloader has some days where nothing seems to work. Kobold archers, especially the commandos, are really deadly, and sleep spells are almost necessary if they catch you unprepared (otherwise, a tank with good ac including girdle of piercing and boots of avoidance will do). I actually never rest in the Nashkell Mines - if I have to, I even prefer taking some time to walk outside, since there's no respawn down there. If there's something I've learned from all my previous runs, it's that rushing will usually kill you.

I'm sure you already know this, but the Gauntlets of Dexterity from the two ogrillions outside of Gnoll Stronghold shouldn't be too hard to get - they greatly improve Ajantis' abilites.

Aye, I just need to get used to using a party again - and not gamble as much as I have been doing with my previous soloers and non-SCS groups. Funny you should mention the gloves, just as I did this:

Image IPB

Let's hope he'll perform a bit better now! :)

Edit: And shortly thereafter - seeing as Ajantis had been trying to convert us to followers of Helm; it was about HIGH time we got our favorite Ranger to join us.

Paladin Magic is impressive... But now, Minsc joins! Swords for everyone!

We are now full plate and PACKING STEEL! Make way villains, Heroes coming through!
