„Removing“ traps in Nashkel mines with a wizard without Mirror Image was quite tedious process. First, it required blood sacrifice – draining life of sentient being using Vampiric Touch. Fortunately, there were many miners available in the mine
With enhanced hitpoints, it was then possible to survive damage caused by traps even at maximum difficulty. Mulahey was killed, as well as Nimbul and Tranzig.
Next, Thazmudyn hunted Sirines and Flesh Golems in areas west of High Hedge. Although it cost me my last Potion of Invisibility, the experience was well worth of it. After defeating nefarious Bassilus, Thazmudyn advanced to level 9.
Thazmudyn tried to recharge Wand of Monster Summoning in FAI, but the cost was 28 000 gp (!) at charisma 24. Since he had nowhere near that amount of money, he had to sell almost everything he had to afford the purchase.
Bandit camp was then cleared with help of summoned monsters. Prior entering Tazok’s tent, Thazmudyn cast Shield and Remove fear and drank Potion of Absorption. Inside the tent, he immediatelly summoned pack of monsters to distract the guards and them killed them using Magic Missiles, Flame Arrows and Lightning bolts.
Since Thazmudyn has no access to Illusion spells, he must rely on summons more than is usual in my solo wizard runs. Nevertheless, it goes quite well with necromancer theme. A pity there is no wizard version of Animate Dead in BG1.
Thazmudyn is level 9 Necromancer with 44 hp.

And thank you everyone for all the very helpful tips and pointers! So far, I've been doing quests and increasing both my party's levels, gold and gear quite a lot before even thinking about entering the mines.
The party also managed to get some revenge on the blasted Kobolds, using the wand trick!

A trick that worked wonders fighting ogres as well!

Other than that, the party is thinking about braving the Firewine dungeon. I'm not entirely sure if I will do that yet though, as I don't have any protection against anything thus far.
Miyuki is doing far better than I had anticipated though. She's a powerhouse, and really opened my eyes both to what the Kensai class is capable of, as well as how insanly good throwing axes are!

Before picking up Minsc, she had about 64% of all kills - wich is quite nice for an unarmored warrior!
The party at this point:
Arvan: 62 HP at Level 5 Wizard Slayer, wearing Plate Mail and using a Short Bow.
Minsc: 44 HP at Level 5 Ranger, wearing Plate Mail and using Bassilus' Warhammer(without proficiencies though, both his maces broke) and a Medium Shield +1.
Miyuki II: 53 HP at Level 5 Kensai, wearing nothing and using Throwing Axes.
Imoen: 33 HP at Level 6 Thief, wearing Studded Leather armor and using a Short Bow.

But a little tip -- the reason FAI charges so much is he puts 100 charges in the wand - go to Thalantyr and he will only put 50 charges in it, which of course is cheaper.

Yes. If you sell a wand, and buy it back it will be recharged - be warned though that the price can be excessive depending on how many charges the merchant puts in them - 28000 gold in Vaclavc's case.

I know it.
Thanks for the tip - a pity I did not know this earlier, it could save me a heap of gold and I certainly do not need 100 charges in that wand.corey_russell wrote...

Using the wand of sleep as well as the necklace of explosions, we cleared the mines a lot easier than the last group did. We then entered Mulahey's den of stinking evil, where I decided I would see how Imoen's backstab skills where comming along.
Well, this image more than speaks for itself:

Quite the hit, thus rendering him horrified and did not put up much of a challenge to the four brave heroes(it's almost like strength doesn't have anything to do with a Thief's damage? I thought it did?)
We then traveled through the world, slaying many foes and picking up some better gear. Having killed Tranzig, we decided to head towards the Bandit Camp, but along the way we got into a fight that would prove to be the most difficult one so far.
Molkar's party was already spread out when they attacked us, so I repositioned everyone as I was not sure where the enemy cleric was targetting his Hold spell. The Mage was channeling something as well, so I had Arvan cast Horror to maybe get a few of them to back off. Just as the horror spell landed, only affecting the enemy Mage, Arvan was countered by the Mage's rigid thinking - while Minsc was hit with the Hold spell.

The fight had thus turned into a 2v3 fight, Molkar and the Cleric beating down Minsc, while Miyuki II and Imoen focused down and killed the enemy Cleric. Unfortunatley, as the guards came down to help - Arvan's clouded mind saw monsters approaching, and thus killed one of them - turning the remaining guard against us, and reducing our reputation to 10. 2v3 yet again.
Miyuki II then drank an Oil of Speed and used her throwing axes to wear down the foul Dwarf that had been chasing her the entire fight, while Imoen headed north with Molkar hot on her trail. As Arvan finally came back to his sences, the enemy Mage returned to the fray(luckily drawing the Guard's attention).

Arvan then made a Horror save against the Mage, and decided to assist Imoen with her foe(I had managed to forget about Imoen at that point), but the brave lass surprised me greatly when I noticed this:

Miyuki II then took down the enemy Mage with her staff, while Imoen baited Molkar into Arvan's Arrows.

The party then fled the scene, unfortunatley never able to return to the FAI - as the guards there are now bound to attack them if they do.
Oh well, off to the Bandit Camp then, after Minsc is back on his feet!

A thief's strength does matter but only for NORMAL melee hits. For backstabs its weapon damage x the thief's backstab multiplier to find out the max a thief will be able to hit for. This is a reason the thief characters on this board love the Martial Staff - one of the biggest damage weapon to use with that multiplier and also thief-usable (which means you can backstab with it) -- it's also cleric usable which makes it a natural choice for cleric/thiefs. I suppose a non-cleric thief could use Greywolf's sword since it's a long sword, and hence can be used for backstabs.

I personally consider this to be something of a cheesy tactic. I guess you could argue that Thalantyr or Halabazar Drin might have the capabilities to do this, or at least that you should be able to buy unlimited wands from them which is the equivalent, but I think wands were designed to be finite, at least in the early game. I'd also rather just mod some stores to sell more wands, at least for immersion's sake. If I actually used wands very much I might worry about it more but the only ones I have are Fire and Lightning, which I can more or less reproduce thanks to my spellcasters anyway.corey_russell wrote...

And on a strictly logical level - if it's possible to make wands with a finite number of charges, it should be able to recharge with more charges, since it's the same process. Besides, you reload your bows with arrows don't you when you run out? If so, don't think you should complain when you reload magical ammo charges, rather than physical ammo.

As I said I can kind of see the arguments for recharging wands, and I mean it's not like you aren't paying a lot for it, but even so you'd probably only be able to recharge them in stores which already sold them (you can't buy more Arrows of Biting in Nashkel, say) in which case it would make more sense, at least to my mind, just to add some extra stock to those stores.
Anyway, I haven't come up against the need to recharge a wand yet, so I haven't, but I think Sorcerous Sundries sells them all anyway once you get to BG.

In vanilla, a single Sleep or Blindness spell can see you through a lot of fights.
Actually blindness or sleep will only see you through ONE fight - if you rest on the road, you risk being woke up without your one spell...but if you go to an inn on the path you have cleared, rest, travel the road, do a battle use your ONE spell, go back to the inn behind you, rest, etc. that will take a lot of time (Jaheira certainly won't like this slow progress)
A number of encounters seem to scream "use wands on us" such as the black talon elite archers in Pelvale (or is it Larswood?). Heck if I can afford to, like to use fireball wands on the skeleton nuisances in High Hedge. Some of the ambushes in the west, with the huge number of xvarts/gnolls beg to be targeted by a sleep wand (could be handy in the Xvart village itself even)

Having defeated the Bandits as well as an Amazon Assassin team quite easily, the party cleared most of the Cloakwood forest - earning a 2 handed sword for Arvan and some other loot. They attempted to take down the Wyverns in the Wyvern Cave, but after Minsc died(even after drinking 2-3 Elixirs of Health) - the party decided to flee and rest up at Nashkel before entering the Mines area.
They where in for quite the fight, and the opening of the battle could have been better on my part. Minsc was hit with Rigid Thinking, and ended up as Wizard food before while Miyuki II used her last 2 or 3 charges on the Necklace of Missiles on the enemy group. Arvan was struck by Confusion, and wandered about for the majority of the battle.
Imoen and Miyuki used Arrows of Biting and Darts of Wounding to get some distance from the two fighters, while Minsc died against the two wizards. Arvan had ran off quite the distance, so the Mages where content at staying behind watching over Minsc's dead body(luckily enough!)
As Imoen died, not being able to get too far away from Drasus - Arvan broke free from his Confusion and went up against Genthore. Miyuki was fighting Drasus by moving and throwing axes, but luckily the poisoned darts and arrows had wore them down enough to make the 2on2 fight rather easy.

Not daring to risk being hit by more crowd control effects, Miyuki II decided that she would slay the two remaining wizards by herself; seeing as they where already near death from the Necklace. Donning the recently claimed Boots of Speed, she proved her worth with the throwing axes yet again.

Returning to Nashkel to prepare for the Mines, the party wasn't quite sure what to expect down there. It has been quite a while since I had a party enter, so I could not simply sneak by most of the encounters.
The first big fight occured as we entered the second level, as all the Guards came running at the hearty adventurers. Fleeing back to the first level, they killed all the Guards that follow - luckily Hareishan did not deem the party worthy of a chase - and stayed behind(phew!).
Cleaning up the remaining Guards and Hareishan proved to be no challenge for the crew, as Imoen oppened with a backstab - followed by Miyuki's Throwing Axes.

The same tactic was used against Natasha, to great effect!

Clearing the the rest of the levels of monsters and brigands(the Ogre Mage was nowhere to be found though), only one deadly villain remained. Davaeorn himself.
Again, the party fumbled a bit in the opening - resulting in Minsc being Dire Charmed and turning on the rest of the party. Arvan and Miyuki II ran off while Imoen had Minsc hot on her trail. She juked and stepped into the shadows, thus allowing the party some breathing room.

Davaeorn used what spells he had on Minsc after the Dire Charm finally wore off - but with his potions and ring of Fire Restistance, the Mage shortly fell thereafter.

Well then, having cleared mostly everything there is(except ToSC content) so far, the party now finds themselves in Baldurs Gate!
(I'm guessing the screenshots look a bit hectic, and I understand if it's hard to see exactly what's going on - but I guess that's how my fights are; hectic!

After reaching Baldurs Gate, the party did all the quests they could find - from Ogres in sewers to slaying Mages in towers. They also got into a good old fashioned barbrawl, but that ended switfly in the four companion's favour.
Investigating the Iron Throne, they put down the evil party they found there, as well as the foul axethrower's group under Candlekeep. All was well, and the party did fairly well at this point of their journey.
Having demolished the Doppelgangers at the Grand Duke's estate(using arrows of dispelling), and slaying the assassins in the undercellar - the party proceeded to follow Sarevok to the final confrontation.
Braving the maze with few trouble, as Imoen heartedly cleared the area of traps - they soon found themselves in combat with a party of bounty hunters. Trying to talk them out of a fight did not work, and thus battle began.
Imoen and Arvan where equiped with Arrows of Detonation, and brought fury down upon the enemy Mage, Archers and Druid(could be a cleric, not sure). Unfortunatley, even with her two rings of Fire Resistance - Imoen soon fell in the heat of the battle. The party avenged her death shortly thereafter, and cleared up what was left of the vile band of mercenaries.

They then proceeded to try and talk Tamoko out of a fight, but deeming the plate she wore much more worthy to them than her life - they quickly took her down and Arvan donned her Plate Armor.
Before entering Sarevok's den of stinking evil, they returned to Baldurs Gate and patched up Imoen.
Then, buffed on potions and scrolls - as well as some magic, they entered Sarevok's den and the fight of their very lives commenced!
Quickly taking up defensive positions, they put down the Mage Semaj & the foul creature Tazok first. Minsc was in the mood for cracking some skulls, and Tazok proved to be the perfect target of his rage!

Seeing both of them die, Sarevok and Angelo emerged with radiating fury - and decended upon Arvan and his friends mercilessly! Their target was Minsc, and the proud warrior could not stand up to their onslaught. Imoen on the other hand, had grown fond of the young berserker - swiftly gaining revenge on Angelo.

Though Minsc had fallen, the party now saw themselves in a 3 versus 1 fight - things looked bright as they brought the fight to Sarevok himself.

They never should have dropped their guard...
Sarevok clearly wanted to win this fight, and slew not only Miyuki II - but Imoen as well. Arvan felt powerless as none of his arrows seemed to slow the mighty warrior down. It had thus turned into a very different fight - Bhaalspawn versus Bhaalspawn.
As Sarevok chased Arvan around the room of death, Arvan picked up what healing potions he could from his fallen companions - missing every blow he attempted on Sarevok with his Spider's Bane - while Sarevok's sword was soaked with the blood of Arvan.
The wizard slayer was soon out of potions, severely wounded and at a loss of what he could do. His armor save was nothing compared to Sarevok's - and as hope dwindled, he decided that enough was enough!
He stepped towards the iron clad monster, honoring his fallen comrade Minsc as he cried out as hard as his lungs would allow him; "Evil meet sword, SWORD MEET EVIL!!!"
Lady Luck must have heard the young warrior's battlecry, for she aided his sword as it struck down Sarevok - avenging his friends in glorious combat!

I am VERY proud to say that: Arvan the Wizard Slayer will see you all in AMN!

And thank you both for the kind words, hopefully things will get better in Amn eventually, right now things are quite disasterous to say the least!

I am entering the challenge yet again, this time with a rather promising group of adventurers - much like the others where - though this time a Cavalier has joined our party!
Allow me to introduce: Inarius the Human Conjurer!
A young but very promising Mage, Inarius trained well with his master Gorion - hoping to some day master the art of Magic.

Alongside the brave young man, two proud and mighty warriors follow and protect him wherever he goes.
Kessler the Human Cavalier!
This stern but goodhearted Paladin has been Inarius' dearest friend as they grew up together in Candlekeep. He has taken upon himself to aid and guide Inarius on his path, where ever it may lead.

And last but not least:
Desh the Human Fighter!
Even though Desh is known throughout Candlekeep for getting into trouble, he manages to always have a gentle smile ready no matter the dire situation. His bow and his axe belongs to Inarius, for the young Mage had always been there to support him - should he find himself in a pinch(and with someone's coinpurse!).

The party had some very nice rolls, and that is something I was hoping for - seeing as I would only use three characters. Kessler actually managed such on his second attempt! Desh is a dashing rogue at heart, and thus will be dual-classed to Thief at level 5 Fighter.
I wish you all luck in your endavours, and I have high hopes of leading this group deep into the heart of many an evil den!
Onwards then, to fame and glory!

Many foes have been slain in our adventure, and to the victor goes the spoils! With good equipment and the experience of many a battle fought and won - the party took upon themselves to deal with a particularly fierce Ogre-Mage.
During the battle, the Iron crisis showed up to say hello, resulting in the end of said foul Ogre!

Shortly thereafter, the party braved the Nashkel mines - putting down Mulahey with a backstab from Desh & a swing from Kessler's Warhammer! Good riddance foul cleric! As they escaped, they attempted a rest - only to find themselves swarmed by Kobolds! They managed to get out of the cave, and emerged back into glorious sunlight - but the kobolds where still hot on their trail! Luckily enough, Inarius quickly cast his invisibility spell - and the party got away unscathed.

Before long, assassins attempted to halt the merry band of adventurers - first at the friendly arm inn.
Inarius quickly cast an invisibility spell upon himself, and moved to a much better position. Then, as Desh moved into a good position as well - Kessler screened off the Assassins and victory was close at hand.

Quite confident with themselves, the party decided to put an end to the bandits that plagued the region, once and for all - entering the Bandit Camp with Warhammers held high and spells properly memorized for the upcomming battles.
The party easily defeated the bandits, using both Desh's Wand of Sleep and Inarius' memorized Sleep Spell. Inside the main tent, Desh slew the Mage residing within by using his skill at backstabbing. Inarius was invisible - and snuck behind a table, from where he was able to not only blind the Bandit Leader, but also the Gnoll. Kessler was busy slaying the Hobgoblin, so Inarius decided to have some fun with his now blinded oponents - killing them slowly with his arsenal of spells.
Once back outside, the party was attacked by yet another group of assassins. This time, Molkar's group.
With good positioning(and a potion of Magic Blocking found inside the tent), the party swiftly delt with the would-be assassins. Kessler handled the Cleric with some help from Inarius, while Desh focused down the enemy Mage. "No assassins are going to stop us!" Kessler yelled, as he crushed his opponents.

Now, with their pockets brimming with gold coin, the party has just purchased what items they had wanted for some time - and are about to enter the Cloakwood forest!

"Onwards!" Inarius cried, as the party left High Hedge.
