I feel sorry for the solo mage player who gets to Sarevok in vanilla BG 1 without TotSC- the player better hope his summons and sling is up to the job, since he can only use his magic to get Sarevok's cronies.

I take great care to obtain some ankheg armour and return Captain Brage to safety. I like the look of his sword but decide not to use it.
My first serious injury is self-inflicted, with my battlerage subsiding painfully hp from 44/44 to 14/29 thanks to double damage.

After returning rings to Joia and Mirianne I kill a belted ogre and a pair of wolves. Then I travel to the coast and battlerage a sirine before fleeing. After a rest I return to deal with two more.
I'll return later, for now I have other ways to cash in.

This takes Vorn to level 5 berserker, with ***** in b swords, 54hp, THACO 16/13, 1.5apr and saving throws 6 8 12 13 9. Can see traps being painful.

In summary progress has been:
- summoned a familiar at Candlekeep.
- Marl gifted Algernon's cloak to Coyote.
- Xzar and Montaron died to a wolf and left Coyote their potions.
- Used invisibility to travel to Friendly Arm and pick up 2 rings and an ogre's belt for Coyote to wear.
- Tarnesh killed Jaheira and Khalid before being killed by guards (wanted her invisibility potion).
- Picked up some more healing potions en route to Nashkel.
- Used the guards to kill Neira.
- At the carnival Oopah killed Vitiare and Zordral and opened a shopkeeper's chest. Coyote bought the amulet of shielding and some potions.
- Went to get fire resistance ring and scroll magic protection from Samuel's area.
- Another scroll from Firewine Bridge was picked up after Bentan was killed by a skeleton.
- At the valley of tombs an invisibility potion was looted from the revenant. This was pretty tricky as the revenant didn't seem to be able to be charmed or lured away from the coffin. Eventually managed it by attacking with familiar and letting it get hit a couple of times while Coyote got the loot and left (taking advantage of the fact that the familiar follows the PC even if it is held or otherwise disabled). The ghast tomb was also a problem, although it shouldn't have been. The ghasts were lured to the entrance and then an invisible Coyote got the treasure, while the familiar cast invisibility. The timing was perfect, but the invisibility spell didn't work (I've noticed this sometimes happens when being cast close to a wall). As a result the familiar had to run interference while Coyote got out. Even then had to run several times from anbushers until eventually rested successfully and could go invisible to travel.
One wild surge so far from the few spells cast (find familiar, charm person for Algernon and a couple of friends spells; also lots of identifies, but they're not checked for surges).
Coyote's stats and inventory are as follows:

Cody is a cleric/mage and so are his 4 friends. Each character has only made one cleric level and already there have been 3 party deaths...more on that in a moment.
There tanking order and stats:
Hanna - Half-Elf Cleric/Mage, -3 AC, 11 HP - STR 15 DEX 18 CON 16 INT 18 WIS 17 CHA 3
Paja - Half-Elf Cleric/Mage, -4 AC, 8 HP - STR 18 DEX 18 CON 9 INT 17 WIS 18 CHA 3
Belle - Gnomish Cleric/Illusionsist, 3 AC, 13 HP - STR 15 DEX 18 CON 16 INT 19 WIS 17 CHA 3
Joshua - Gnomish Cleric/Illusionist, 5 AC, 10 HP - STR 13 18 DEX CON 16 INT 18 WIS 15 CHA 3
Cody (protaganist) - Half-Elf Cleric/Mage, -2 AC, 11 HP - STR 15 DEX 18 CON 16 INT 18 WIS 17 CHA 3
Not surprisingly, the party deaths have been the forward two party members. Hanna died against Greywolf (we managed to entangle him) and against the wardogs in the warehouse - a wardog got a crit, and despite the helmet it did 8 damage, which of course is Hanna's HP at the time...
We've cleared the road areas and High Hedge...I tried something new against Bassilus and it was a big disaster..I tried to have Paja creep up via Sanctuary but Bassilus opened dialog - we did the right options, but nothing happened, and I think it may have done something with Paja being sanctuaried. Having said A we did B and attacked Bassilus. He saved against blindness and all commands sent his way but NOT entangle - good thing, we can't take hits from Ashideena. Our 1 APR slings managed to interrupt him some and he only got one spell off a hold peson at Paja which she saved against (glad I gave her that protection ring). He fell but a huge mass of undead still, we have HP but only in our low teens (at best), and turn undead does nothing. We will lose the Ashideena though if we dont' clear them so Paja and Hanna did their best to clear out these undead (no one in the party had magic weapons yet). Paja was potioning like mad and we ran out of heal spells. Cody gulped a haste potion, the only thing I could do to speed up the kills. Paja died, but the party managed to clear the rest.
Ashideena went to Hanna, we resurrected Paja and with our cash bought a +1 mace for Belle and got a +1 large shield for Paja. I know cleric/mages will get better later, but these early stages they are like match sticks. Our strategy has been to immobilze enemies as much as we can and fight from range, since we definitely don't have the HP.

It's been quite interesting actually and using Algernon's Cloak makes it far easier than relying on level 1 spells (essentially charm person).After5CST wrote...

Coyote #2 was looking promising, but has just kicked the bucket in the Cloakwood Mines in disappointing circumstances. He hadn't had any luck in resting in the mine and, as a result, had had to work hard (and use a potion of invisibility) to get rid of Daveorn. However, that was achieved successfully and he only had to walk out of there, but was killed by a trap in a corridor he and the familiar had already been up and down several times (while he was protected by scroll of magic protection)

As that was a rather unfortunate way to go I'll see if it could be third time lucky for Coyote. I had drafted a summary post on progress up to the Cloakwood mine, but will use that for #3 if he gets that far.

You are welcome. I'm glad they are doing someone some good. Like I said I never have done an all cleric/mage party before, so I'm sort of learning as I go myself...trying to make the best of what resources I have, and as you can see by my stats HP is not one of them!

It is possible to kill him without use of lightning bolts - in fact, I started to use lightning trick with solo clerics, who have virtually no other means to harm him, aside from wand of heavens and vampiric touch obtained as Bhaalspawn power.Gate70 wrote...

@Corey: Great run, goodl luck with Picenon in SoA.
@Wise Grimwald: sorry to hear about your loss, Durlag's Tower and Werewolf island account for majority of my characters' deaths.
@Corey: good luck with your cleric/mage run. From my current experience, C/M is extremely potent class. I recommend trying stinking cloud/skeletons combo - very satisfying
Short update on Valhyron, human cleric7/mage8 dual class (56 hp).
Upon flooding Cloakwood mine, Valhyron headed to Baldur’s Gate. He investigated Iron Throne activities and defeated mercenaries at the top floor of their headquarters.
He disabled them with Stinking Clouds, then send Skeletons into action. Nevertheless, this was long fight during which Valhyron emptied both his Spell book and Priest scroll.

Return to Candlekeep was short but fruitful: tombs provided Valhyron with much needed tome increasing strength.

Upon return to Baldur’s Gate, Valhyron investigated Sarwvok’s activities. He saved duke Eltan, killed Cythandria, Krystin and Slythe. At the battle in duchal palace, Valhyron managed to dispel buffs of dopplegangers and killed them with the help of animated skeletons. Luckily, both dukes survived.

And yes, the stinking cloudk/animate dead combo was what I had in mind. At my low levels, sleep/entangle is working pretty well, so though the one weakness so far is undead skeletons with ranged weapons - our turn undead still too weak to be of any use. Once we get level 3 wizard spells, though those undead will be a thing of a past - fireball. That's still quite a ways away, especially with the slow leveling of the group.

After a brief rest, Toil and company finished the map S of Ulcaster without issue. Moving on to the Firewine Bridge, he cleared that map as well. Wanting to play with the Cloak (something I normally don't ever mess with), and a little concerned about Khark after a previous encounter's near end, he used the cloak to charm Melium, and then let Melium & skeletons take on Khark.
(While this was great fun, and a suprisingly even match, we didn't seem to get XP for Melium killing Khark... so I don't know I'd do it again like that ).
Resting up and exiting to the N (towards Gullykin), Toil & company prepared for Molkar & his band of assassins. Skeletons created, Blessed, Remove Fear on the party, and Mirror Image on Dynaheir. Moving to encounter the enemy, skeleton pawns on the front, opening salvo was Viconia's Silence 15' Radius, Xzar's Chromatic Orb on the cleric, and Dynaheir's Horror (for lack of anything better to do). Xzar disrupted the cleric. Surprisngly, all but the wizard were horrified. Montaron missed a backstab, but he and Toil quickly dispatched the mage (who also saved against Silence), and turned to assist mop-up of the other three.
Things went so easy until Molkar became un-horrified, and a toe-to-toe slugfest between he and Toil went badly. While the wounded Molkar had no real shot with numerous Magic Missile attacks, he still managed to nearly kill Toil before he finally fell. The following screen shot shows the post-battle scene, after Toil used an innate CLW to avoid being at death's door:

Molkar and Toil on Flickr
After doing the math:
8 (long sword) + 1 (+1 enchantment) + 4 (18/76 STR) + 4 (5* in large sword) = 17, so apparently not only was it a max (non-critical) damage hit, but opened my eyes some to the value of lots of proficiency points in a weapon.
Next steps are to finish the walk to Gullykin and start on the kobold-infested tunnels.

Thanks. I gatemastered (what a name eh) a FMT up with the same equipment in vanilla and tried it. Suffice to say I found him a lot easier to kill in my vanilla insane install than in my BGT insane install. I tried to investigate further but the game froze if I tried CTRL/Y to kill his pack. I could CTRL/Q him but the game also froze if I tried to select his record sheet, so I couldn't see what his regeneration is.Vaclavc wrote...

I expect vanilla, EasyTutu and BGT have a myriad of differences; other encounters must be tougher in vanilla than the conversions making it very difficult to appreciate the feats of everybody on this thread.

it takes more money than is easily available in Candlekeep. I tried the following strategies to generate the money without getting any XP.
1) Charmed various things and tried to get them to follow me to their doom. This normally works elsewhere, but apparently not anywhere in Candlekeep.
2) Charmed the noble in the inn and moved him where he would see me stealing from the chest. Then charmed Firebead before stealing (and summoning the guards). This took quite a lot of game time in resting (as only 1 spell per day) and Coyote died twice when the guards failed to kill Firebead before the charm wore off. After that I decided that the 5 round duration was not long enough for it to be likely that the guards would kill him.
3) While casting charms at Firebead there had been several wild surges (including one fireball that resulted in death), so I tried a different tack of trying to make use of these - there is a 4% chance on a wild surge that some form of treasure will be created. First got the innocents out of the way of a fireball and put Winthrop next to the stairs (so he could get away if a demon is gated in). Then started casting surges. On just the third one Coyote found a black opal in his pocket, which paid for the bag of holding. Coyote's avatar is now red-skinned, but that's a small price to pay!
Coyote #6 will now continue his journeys rather more cautiously. Progress so far has been serene:
- Marl gifted Algernon's cloak to Coyote.
- Xzar and Montaron died to a wolf and left Coyote their potions.
- Used invisibility to travel to Friendly Arm and pick up 2 rings and an ogre's belt for Coyote to wear.
- Tarnesh killed Jaheira and Khalid before being killed by guards (wanted her invisibility potion).
- Went up to Ulgoth's Beard where Dushai had an unfortunate accident and Coyote inherited his ring.
- Picked up some more healing potions en route to Nashkel.
- Used the guards to kill Neira.

Picenon would have loved to have had a bag of holding, some of the bigger fights required so many resources, that there was great difficulty in managing inventory.
Guess I'm saying it success at level 1, no reload to boot, is quite an achievement, regardless of a bag of holding SKed or not.

All our party members are using large shields, just so you people know (though Hanan and Paja's are the +1 variety) I never really introduced my party members along with my plan for them, so here we go (in tanking order):
Hanna

Nothing special about her actually, she can be a caster or tank, depending on what we need her for, though she's tank at the moment. What's interesting though is her stats are identical to Cody's. She is using Ashideena as her primary weapon
Paja:

I needed at least ONE strong character physically, there's 4 bodies in BG 1 you have to carry around at different times, and that will be tough to do if everyone is a weakling. I had to compromise something (unless I was wiling to roll for an hour, which I wasn't), so compromised CON. Thinking about it again, maybe I should have made her a weaker caster, after all Quayle and Anomen I think start with 12 WiS. But too late now...It's been really strange having a tank with 8 HP in the front (at least that is what she had for a while). Even now she only has 11 HP. If it weren't for her helmet she would have been chunked long ago...Most likely I probably keep her using armor for a long time, until I get a battle where I need her mage spells (which won't be many of those, not with 4-5 other cleric/mages). She is using the +1 flail from Xvart Village Cave as her primary weapon.
Belle:

She's been without armor at all times, so we would have easy access to mage spells during battle. She also got first dibs on the AC 8 bracers from Feldeposte's Inn. Nothing much to comment on her except she's our premiere offensive caster (she got the ring of wizardry at the FAI). If she's not casting, she's always using her sling, though she does have a +1 mace from Thunderhammer Smithy.
Joshua:

Joshua's role is the same as Belle's: run naked (no armor) and contribute offfensive spells, which like Belle are mostly disabling at this point. He recently got the AC 8 bracers from the Xvart Village Cave. He always using sling if not casting -- hopefully he won't have to melee much, just a basic club at the moment.
Cody:

He stays in the back and casts cleric spells and slings. He never takes off his armor out of the city, and will be getting the ring of holy power when we get it. His arcane spells HAVE seen a use though - he has 2 friends spells permanently memorized, so if we need it when talking to a quest character or merchant, he takes off his armor then cast friends x2 (and x3 with enough levels) and does the selliing/buying. He will probably just be a wand user, unless in a tough fight and need his extra arcane backup.
Here is a screenshot of how we usually deal with traveling/resting ambushes - entangle/sleep, back off and sling:

By the way people I am using PNG instead of JPG, let me know if anyone can see a difference. The party has cleared the Nashkel Mine (surface), saved a tree from some ogrillions (I think), battled an Xvart village, took out quite a few gibberlings and rescued a hurt man named Samuel, and found a DEX gauntlets (Paja for now) and a CHA tome -- with everyone at 3 CHA almost useless, BUT will actually help since we do friends x2 on Cody, so Cody got it.
Front-liners die fairly often, but no chunkings -- the party does excellent against humanoids and melees in general actually -- entangle works beautifully in vanilla BG 1 since it doesn't entangle the party, only enemies. So far the weakness of the party has been mages -- since no one has HP, basic direct damage spells like magic misisiles and melf's arrow are devastating. If we could get some true area effects like web and stinking cloud and invisibility that could change, but no access to level 2 wizard spells yet. MGoI would be awesome too, but that's a long way off....

Not to knock your achievement about getting money for a bag of holding via wild surges, Grond0, but I've never seen anyone complain (myself included) about using shadowkeeper to add a bag of holding for a solo character. Perhaps you could use that next time.
Coyote just accidentally got 7 XP at the Carnival, when a slight mis-click while Oopah was being killed by kobolds resulted in him taking one of their heads off. While I wouldn't necessarily rule a run out for that, it's still fairly early on so think I will re-start to try and get a purer result.

What happens when a party of low level cleric/mages encounters a powerful melee NPC (Ogre Berserker in this case) and the enemy resists the party's entangles/sleeps/blinds? THIS.. Fortunately Paja realized our weapons weren't cutting it and used a charge of the frost wand from Nashkel Mines surface area and we won without casualty, but barely. The rest of the area (Drizzt area) was cleared without incident.

Caldo and Krumm are next, then a drowned cat.
Eugh.

I rest before continuing.

Inside the pirate cave I find my sword is useless, and two blows force me to retreat. I have to glug four blue potions to survive hp dropped to 3, needed to get to 31+ to survive the rage fatigue.
Instead I help Samuel and kill Tarnesh before exploring.

An assassin called Numbul manages one set of magic missiles before I cut him down. Tranzig manages a Melf's acid arrow.
It takes three visits to kill Ardenor Crush. Taugosz Khosann sends me packing once, my second visit looks more promising.

I move away to heal and continue the fight.

He is almost dead but my rage expires and I have to run 10hp left so heal to 18 then glug three blue potions before battleraging again. He lands a critical hit so I gulp and run. He hits me again and I have to glug two more potions to keep above my fatigue zone.
We each require one more hit, so I grab an abandoned shortbow and use arrows taken from sirines. My third arrow connects.

He shrugs the poison off but not the next arrow.

I need to gather my thoughts before continuing.

After the death of my party in Amn, I decided I needed to pay heed to the pointers given to me - and thus I decided to try soloing a Conjurer through Baldurs Gate 1 SCS on core. My last attempts failed horribly - but this time, the Half-Elf Aurellian proved to be quite the capable Mage.
I was quite lucky with my rolls, landing this on my third:

(Warning! Tons of linked Images!)
Through Aurellian's travels he evaded the Cleric Bassilus' rigid thinking just barely, slew the blinded Bounty Hunter Greywolf with his Magic Missiles, Blinded Mulahey while his monsters died from Skull Trap - just like Narcillius Harwilliger - and defeat Nimbul and Tranzig quite easily.
His journey did not end there though, as he soon found himself in combat against Bounty Hunters, Bandits, Bandit Leaders, Davaeorn, Battle Horrors and Iron Throne Leaders. After returning from Candlekeep, he had quite the duel with Krystin, but he emerged victorius.
The Grand Dukes where saved by a horde of monsters(!) - and the deaths of Angelo & Semaj soon followed(I messed up and managed to pull all four, and the fight was looking grim when my monsters got cut down). Semaj at one point cast Confuse on Aurellian, but the Half-Elf managed to drink his Invisibility Potion at the same time - pretty much resetting the fight. At that point, Aurellian had only cast a few spells - so this was the opportune moment to buff up.
Aurellian got into a decent position, and managed to kill Semaj & Angelo with the Wand of Monster Summoning without Tazok and Sarevok noticing. All that remained then, was killing Sarevok with massive bursts of Magic Missiles - while the Conjurer's pets did the tanking.
As Sarevok fell, I realized I had managed to complete BG 1 SCS solo for the first time with a Mage - and it does feel pretty good!
Oh, and by the way - someone mentioned something about summoning a Familiar at level one messed up something with BG2? Anyone know how I can remedy that?
