Since Arkona's updates have lagged behind her progress, I'll quickly dart off a catch-up post.
The Wand of Sleep and a Dart of Stunning rendered Teven and friends harmless.

Venkt failed his save against Arkona's opening Dart of Stunning. The Wand of Fire thinned enemy ranks. Chill Touch finished them.

In the interest of conserving resources, Arkona chose invisibility over a Potion of Freedom in Cloakwood area 2.

Drasus and his friends may still be hanging out by the now derilict mines.

The Wand of Frost fixed Davaeorn. Buffs foiled his spells.

The Seven Sun Dopes were "touched" by Arkona's interst in their affairs.

It was a bad day at the office for Slythe and Kristin...

The Duchal Palace is next.

Arkona just completed the Duchal Palace fight. It went smoothly.
She buffed heavily and then went Remove Magic->Greater Malison.

Next, she flicked Darts of Stunning around the room. All but 2 of the Dopes were Stunned and dispatched by Belt and the Flaming Fist.
The last 2 refreshed their buffs only to see them Removed again.

The Wand of Frost and Longtooth finished them.

Arkona will likely face Sarevok this evening.

The first 5 characters should be random, with the remaining 5 being chosen as favourites, or to fill in gaps. Here's the first entry on exit from Candlekeep. As you can probably tell, while the character is random and the first die roll was taken, the scores were rearranged!

My frolic through the woods <or> The way I did the Jaheira quest;
Step 1, accept the quest from Seniyad... needs Jaheira in the party.
Step 2, go tête-à-tête with Amarande at the tree-house (don’t allow SCS to upgrade this fight or the quest can bug out).
Step 3, go to the next map and watch as a cow gets kidnapped. Note that killing the Hamadryad is not strictly necessary but IMO better than fighting two groups together... follow the path about 10 steps SW to find four shadow druids about to put the boot into a guy named Beador.

Step 4, return to the tree fort (see step two) and killed Andarthe just in front of the tree.
Step 5, went inside the tree and talked to Maretha.
Step 6, returned to Seniyad & asked for the root that he had promised me.

<Note that when the yanks say root they just mean a stick> bloody disappointing!

Alesia, did you ever finish (one way or another) your cleric/mage run? That's such an interesting class. Not necessarily wildly challenging, but really fun to just mess around with.

At present, I can reliably get from The Keep to Tougher Abazigal with a wide variety of characters. And without experience progression nerfs, all of them end up over-powered in BG1 and SoA. When you consider that running a caster can present difficulties in certain late ToB fights, there no longer seems to be a point in avoiding casters. Instead, what I should be avoiding is becoming over-leveled with the answer there being experience progression nerfs.
Admittedly, my interest in Arkona is waning a bit. I wanted to try her because I thought it would be neat to realize the first vision I had for a BG1 character but the novelty is wearing off. There is a reasonably good chance that Arkona won't be exported to BG2. Instead, I may run either a pure Sorceress or a C/M.

Unfortunately, Zukashifu bit the dust pretty early on, at the hands of the world's only Amazing Exploding Ogre. I'm not sure whether it was not having BG1's walking speeds or GemRB forgetting to give Zukashifu monk speed, but he had a job running from anything. Without the quest packs he managed to get about 2k XP without fighting but it wasn't enough to gain a level as a multi-classed character. With only 6hp he was easily one-shotted by the ogre.
I may try again, because I really want to play a Sorc/Monk, but I think he needs Sleep or at least some mod adjustments. Plus there's the fact that as awesome as GemRB is, it's not really at the stage where it's good for a no-reload challenge. Amongst other things, it seemed to be giving me full health when resting, and allowing enemies to surround me whilst on the world map screen (though this last might just have been that they were very quick).
I was wondering if I might be able to make my own Druid/Mage mod, though... ;-)

@The Fred: sorry to hear that, good luck in your next attempt.
Update on dual class cleric7/mage8 (58 hp) Eldrymon:
Eldrymon explored Coakwood mines and challenged Davaeorn - it was basically the battle of Worgs and Battle Horrors summoned by Davaeorn against Eldrymon’s skeletons.
http://i264.photobuc...on/Baldr091.jpg
After Davaeorn’s death, Battle Horrors were easily killed and Eldrymon flooded the mine.
In Baldur’s Gate, Eldrymon investigated the activities of Iron Throne, which eventually led him to their palace. Mercenaries guarding the fifth floor were defeated and Eldrymon reported his findings to duke Eltan.

In Candlekeep catacombs, Eldrymon looted tombs, defeated false Elminster, Prat and Greater basilisks and escaped.
http://i264.photobuc...on/Baldr111.jpg
Back in Baldur’s Gate, his investigation led him to ducal palace. When Greater Doppelgangers appeared, Eldrymon drank Potion of Invisibility, retreated, buffed himself, dispelled buffs of doppelgangers and killed them while protecting dukes with summoned skeletons. Both dukes survived.

What are your thoughts about playing Skald?
Shalds are fine.
In general, I'm of the opinion that playing your character well is more important then picking the right class (with a few notable exceptions) and often times, having a connection with your character can help on that front. Skalds are among the capable classes. If anyone has felt the urge to play one on role playing grounds, I'd encourage them to give it a whirl: you may find that your character ends up working out better then something potentially more powerful simply because you are engagd and minding the details.
Solo, they can be quite effective in the early going (+3 to Damage and To Hit and -2 to AC is no joke). Of course, by the time you reach HLA territory, Blades make more sense but Skalds remain capable.
I'd imagine they'd really shine in a party. But, again, they are trumped by Blades in the late game. That shouldn't necessarily stop anyone from using them of course though. It's the player-character combo that matters and if going Skald will interest you more, that can be a whole lot more valuable then offensive spin.
Personally, I've sort of lost interest in Arkona as mentioned earlier, so I'll likely drop her. Others may certainly find a Skald they enjoy though.
Best,
A.

The Four Horsemen spent every last of their gold (and even coppers...) on Necklace of Missiles and went on hunting. The very first blast brought much needed level up to all of us:

We cleared areas between Beregost and Nashkel, made some basilisk's hunting (one more level to all), helped (or rather made all dirty work themselfs) Drizzt, eliminated Bjornin's Half-Ogres and brought Brage to the Temple in Nashkel to safe/speed travel and some Rep/Money so we can afford recharged Necklace of Missiles:

Current state:
Grim Face, Sorcerer 4 (lvl1-Shield, Sleep, Blindness; lvl2- Mirror Image), 59 kills, Cave Bear
Jaheira, Fighter 3 / Druid 4, 37 kills, Ghast
Khalid, Fighter 4, 88 kills, Greater Basilisk
Imoen, Thief 5, 36 kills, Dread Wolf
to be continued...

Blinded foes will wander around in SCS/SCS II (which is definitely more tactically relevant than just standing there), and they will sort of wander in your general direction once in a while. I think you may have just gotten unlucky.
Btw, it find it very interesting to read about actual real play-throughs of GemRB. It'd be great to be able to ditch VirtualBox + WinXP for a native Linux implementation of BG. Not quite yet, I suppose

At the risk of sounding... Untoward: I think at some point you have to accept the conclusion that you've reached a point where you've broken the game over your knee so thoroughly, you aren't going to be very challenged no matter what you do, and start finding your enjoyment along other lines. Like finding interesting suboptimal but amusing spell combinations to humiliate the opposition. Or beating everyone while naked and wielding only your starting stick (but that isn't very interesting in practice)

It works OK although walking speeds do appear to be different (my barbarian still moves quicker than the rest of the party, not tried it with enemies around). It doesn't appear to be reading the game ini file correctly (difficulty, scroll speeds, tooltop delay have to be set each time I run GemRB). Have got the pre-packaged beta version so need to read up on what developments have taken place since, and also if I need to change other settings etc.
It runs quicker and smoother than under Wine (particularly load and save times) so was looking forward to trying multiplayer but can't (click the multiplayer button and nothing happens).
Maybe we should start a GemRB thread in the BG tech support forum rather than de-rail the no-reload further?

Back at the Gate, Imoen and Dynaheir drank up blue and purple and scribed a bunch of scrolls. Dy needed it the most, as her book was rather empty still. It seemed that she and Minsc had not done much adventuring during the past few tendays. Then the full party of six finished up the odd jobs that Gyan and Imoen had started a few days before. This included getting the antidote from Marek, picking up the reward from Nadarin for taking care of the basilisk, and forcing Yago to hand over his book of curses. Finally they started up on the job that Scar had assigned to them. Following the mess at the Seven Suns, they took a brief tour of the Flaming Fist compound, and Imoen gave a ring to a man named Fergus. Then they expored the city some more with a new assignment from Scar.
During the search they ran into grumpy thieves, an angry mage named Sunin, and then Imoen toyed around with some ogre mages who had apparently been looking for Gyan!

Half of the party was panicked in the first two fights. I really need to spend more time considering protection buffs as Jaheira had plenty of Remove Fears memorized. I even forgot to use it in the second fight in reaction (mostly because things were already in hand). So, in the ogre mage fight, I had Imoen do everything from the shadows. Of course, one stray lightning bolt almost hit her!

More searching upset a man named Jardak, led the party to clear out what remained in Razamith's tower (Minsc level up to R5), exposed the evil Gervisse (Dy level up to I5, and with the ring that Sunin had donated to their cause, she could now memorize 10 Magic Missiles), and forced them to defended themselves from the Maulers. During the fight in the Helm and Cloak, one of the Maulers landed a well placed Glyph, which is pretty impressive for the computer AI. However, a couple rounds later, it didn't matter.

As a final non-main-plot bit, they fought many Ankhegs (Jahiera level up to F6/D6). It was around this time that Gyan had a set of guantlets IDed. He donned them, and the magical effect signaled a major turning point in his life. Reversing course from previous feelings of fear of the unknown, Gyan began to internalize the confidence he had been gaining, while, at the same time, his magical equipment transformed his weak body into a powerful physical force. With his new strength, he also donned armor since he was now able to carry more than anyone else in the group!

Finally, they explored the sewers and found the menace they were looking for. The ogre mage and his pets were quickly routed, in sync with Gyan's increased confidence, and he boldly reported back to Scar his success. With support from Eltan, Gyan set out to complete his investigation of the Iron Throne. The party sold off their loot, double checked their stocks of potions and ammo, and then entered the Iron Throne BG Headquarters.
Imoen scouted the top floor, and decided to have some more fun with the foes she found there, much as she had done with the ogre mage assissins. She sent waves of beasts their way. The summons did not do much at first (just a small amount of damage), but soon a hobgoblin poisoned Zhalimar and later Alai. Another killed Aasim and another Diyab. Naaman died to an ogre ambush and eventually Alai died from poison. At that point, Imoen went back downstairs and brought the rest of the party up for clean-up duty. Zhalimar got paralyzed last and was easy pickings.

They took everything of value, including a few notes on a table in the back room which talked about an Iron Throne meeting in Candlekeep. Gyan questioned Thaldorn, but ultimately let him go. They IDed and sold all the loot they were not going to keep for themselves, rested at the Elfsong, and then reported back to Eltan. Next up: a return home!

Condolences @Fred, good luck Grond0 - you seem to get a lot of 18/00 characters, though that's rare for mine...
Rhea's made a bit of progress. A couple of tasks in Beregost provided level 2 and 14 more HPs. That was enough to make ambushes pretty irrelevant so she headed on down to Nashkel and then across the Firewine plains. Attempted to save a cow, but narrowly failed - her total lack of proficiency in missile weapons letting her down. She did relieve a half-ogre of a magic 2-handed sword. She won't be using Algernon's cloak and, after seeing Gate70's exploits, I'm expecting her to do rather more hand-to-hand than I normally allow.
Carrying on to the East she met an obnoxious swordsman and relieved him of some gauntlets, though had to play ring-a-ring of roses with him for quite a while before shooting him down. That provided level 3 and 5 more HPs. After a brief stop at the carnival went down to the mines. The first attempt to match swords with Greywolf resulted in retreat when he used a potion of speed, but the second was much more successful with a juicy critical finishing him off and also providing level 4 and 14 more HPs. The mines will be next.
