Now that my female gnome is wearing a mage robe, she has a MALE gnome avatar with beard and all! I do object as female gnomes do not necessarily have beards (like female dwarves do), although some do choose to do so.
Anyway, we all go back to Beregost to rest at the Jovial Juggler and identify all these items properly.

Except in very tight spaces monsters without distance capability have no real chance anyway. One way where the SCS script does work to your advantage is if there are only 1 or 2 missile users. If you charge them then rather than shoot or melee you they will try to run away - wasting time while you shoot them up. Of course most of the time you will have more opposition than that.Wierdo wrote...
I normally scout with Wierdo (protagonist gnome Illusionist/thief) in shadows, and she is also one of the 'weakest' party members. I then line my party up at an appropriate place, and Wierdo starts shooting her bow to injure/attract them. before running back past the party's ambush position. The monsters then try to attack her and become largely oblivious to the rest of the party pounding them with missile weapons. By the time the monsters start to respond, they have usually been seriously injured or numbers reduced.
That tactic doesn't work so well on dudes with bows, especially guys like bandits, kobold commandos and elite hobgoblins (although the shield spell helps). For them, I usually get a tank link Annakin (berserker) to charge them first - with plate mail + 18 dex + girdle of piercing he becomes very hard to hit with missiles, and they have to respond with melee weapons when he starts hitting them. The rest of the party provides missile support where possible to bring the bad guy down as quickly as possible.
Meanwhile Newt's party was trying to make progress. Got everyone to level 3/4 and decided to take on the Nashkel mines. Got through to the battle with Mulahey, but in that Kagain was held by Mulahey (he had used berserk on the way and I was aiming to do the mines without resting) which meant supporting characters had to expose themselves a bit more. A kobold elite got in a chop on Edwin for 12 HP, which regrettably was all he had (having thrown 2 minimums at level up).
Next step to roll up a new character ...

I think that's the equal second highest total roll I've ever had in many years of playing (99 best) and the 00 exceptional strength (versus 51) arguably makes this a better roll overall - would certainly do so if there was no prospect of a tome.
I will still be trying to avoid any casualties in the party. However, given how good Miseri is I will probably continue her even if someone else does die.

Thanks Corey. My benchmark in the past tended to be 93 - allowing straight 18s + 3 in charisma (or occasionally wisdom). I've had many happy hours listening to the radio rolling away waiting for that golden moment to turn up.corey_russell wrote...
Good luck in your run, Grond0! That is a nice roll. I know when I roll characters I'm usually satisfied enough if I roll a 85, if I get 90+ then I always stick with it. This zerker going to dual to cleric eventually, is that why you are human? Or druid?
This character is, like the last few, intended for druid - this makes rolling much more of a problem since wisdom and charisma need to be high. Thus the current roll is a real benefit to me, which it wouldn't be with most classes.

The snippets below show which map areas have been visited so far.
Candlekeep is my home no more; assassins behind every door.
Gorion's grave has been dug deep; now we go to get some sleep.
An ogre likes a lovely belt; a belt from me he really felt!
Beregost's a thriving town; where Immy buys a new pink gown.
Montaron aims and shoots; and acquires some nice new boots.
Neverwinter we now know; thanks to Lord Foreshadow.
It would have been a peaceful walk; but for hearing Noober talk!
{Imoen levels up}
Greywolf sought a precious stone; but finding it made him groan.
{Viconia levels up}
A deserter from the Flaming Fist; will now forevermore be missed.
A missing caravan lies dead; its foes themselves have now bled.
{Miseri levels up}
The Friendly Arm provides two rings; while Imoen a spellbook sings.
{Kagain levels up}
A noble drow beset by gnolls; much too easy - should be trolls!
{Montaron and Imoen level up}
Nexlit says: bear come quick; but bear is soon pretty sick.
{Viconia levels up}
Jared does not like his bear; and gives me fur-lined boots to wear.
In town to fill a missile gap; Viconia obtains a charmless cap.
The stronghold is almost bare; just a wizard living there.
{Miseri and Kagain level up}
Next stop will be to cleanse the zombie retreat.

Bassilus is in his grave; his undead army he failed to save.
{Montaron levels up}
Vampiric wolves have no defence; to magic arrows worth every pence.
{Viconia levels up}
A chicken tries to live once more; but can't return from death's door.
The carnival is pretty slick; ogre bombs the latest trick!
Back in town to sell some ware; Silke wished we'd not been there.
{Miseri levels up}
A spider's body dark with decay; Landrin likes it anyway.
{Kagain and Montaron level up}
We choose to follow the sirens' song; to them the treasure does not belong.
{Imoen and Montaron level up}
A surgeon in the wilderness; ah his touch - such bliss.
{Viconia levels up}
Back to Nashkel for a day; come to take Edwin away.
At the stronghold, but not to stay; just to find a wizard to slay.
With Edwin in the party (at L4 and hence with access to invisibility) it should be safe enough to take on the Nashkel mines next.

Wow, you are sure playing hard-ass. Even when I Dungeonmastered PnP D&D, I would always pretend I had not seen the die if a character rolled less than average for HP.
I play core rules but with BGTweaks modding to give max HP on level up. However, to make it fair, all the monsters are also modded to have max HP.

Went back to Wilderness lake and defeated Bjornin's half-ogres. He will be pleased.
Also took on a bunch of ogres and ogrillons, and some other groups of ghouls, skeletons, bears. Annakin levelled up (Berserker, Lv3). Starria got to Level 2 as a ranger (Cleric Ranger Lv 2/2)
Xvarts were so happy to se us that they all come out to greet us properly! Buddha the monk (now lv3) put his darts away and waded into the melee. Buddha rocks in unarmed combat! He get killed two xvarts to 10 hp karate chops, plus many others. I feel so sorry for the Xvarts - they were such meat that even a my level 2-3 party could chop them all up. Wierdo (both classes, Lv 2/3 now) and Imoen levelled (Lv4!)
Phew, a close call. In Ursa's cave she had a mate, a cave bear. In the small cave, it managed to pin Wierdo to a wall so that she couldn't run away. Nearly killed her. I must take more care! Found another Flail +1 for Starria and bracers AC8 (almost useless, too dull for Buddha, gave them to Imoen).
Went up to Ogre's Reach. Helped a guy out with his mountain bear problems.
Helped a Paladin called Laurel kill about 40-50 gibberlings! Two sleep spells took care of most of them.
Even so, they managed to take a couple of pieces out of Buddha the monk (now LV4). Oh, Buddha and Starria went up levels. Starria is now Cleric/ranger LV 3/2, so can cast 2nd level spells (yay!).
Had run out of arrows, so time to return to Beregost and give Bjornin the good news about the half-ogres. And rest in a bed for once.

It can be a pain, but there is that extra exhilaration when you get some good rolls (bit like when originally rolling the character). The only character class I do give max HP to is monks as I think they are clearly a martial class and should be able to benefit from high constitution (and max HP roughly equates to that).Wierdo wrote...

In Nashkel, killed a baby wyvern, who poinsoned Annakin! Thank Cyric Starria had just levelled up and could cast 2nd level cleric spells (slow poison). Lord whatshisname tried to pin a charge on me for killing the wyvern! The audacity of him! But he got dragged off to the cell instead. How wierd ...
Found a stash near a farmhouse at Nashkel - had Bracers AC5! Perfect for Buddha, he mproves AC by two points to AC1!
Went to the Nashkel Carnival - but it was night and everything was closed. Killed lots of kobolds & 2 ogre berserkers. Killed a wizard that was threatening a woman (Bentha) and Annakin got to LV4.

Mods installed:
Dark Horizons
Thalantyr - Item Upgrade
BG1 Unfinished Business
BG1 Quest Pack
Stone of Askavar
The Grey Clan: Episode 1
A Mod of my Own Making which makes certain spells Druid/Ranger-only and allows Druids to cast Dispel Magic and Strength of One (should make being a Cleric more challenging).
A Mod of my Own Making which increases the stack sizes of various stackable items.
Enter Aertsalzeth, Half-elf Cleric/Ranger, stats 18/28, 18, 18, 11, 18, 10 (I was just about to give up and go with a mediocre roll when I got lucky and struck gold).
So, after running a bunch of tedious errands, I left Candlekeep only to walk right into an ambush! Gorion is dead, but I met up with Imoen and, though I intend to find these friends at the Friendly Arm Inn, we headed first to Beregost. What will become of us, though, is yet to be seen...

After the carnival, Wierdo's band went to the Nashkel mines area. Explored around and found Prism the sculptor and a bountyhunter called Greywolf. We had a fundamental disagreement with Greywolf and a fight ensued. Buddha used the opprtunity to try out his stunning blow technique - to great success! Greywolf was stunned by Buddha's awesome display of kung-fu fighting and then fell very quickly.
Once we collected the reward for one of prism's emeralds (Wierdo 'accidentally' dropped one on the ground as Oublek went through her pockets, but picked it up a moment later), we headed back towards Beregost to buy some magic arrows. Then we headed to Nashkel Pass.
At Nashkel Pass, the first thing I wanted to deal with was the pair of vampiric wolves. This was tough. As the fight started I realised that I'd forgotten magic darts for Buddha. That made him useless (BTW, the wolves can only be hit by magic weapons and regenerate).
Starria very nearly died here. The first wolf mauled Starria badly on it's first attack, both STUNNING her and BREAKING HER BRAND NEW SHINY PLATE MAIL ARMOUR (which we just bought from Taerim in Beregost - I want a refund & apology)! Stunned and naked, she was almost dead by the time we got both wolves killed (mostly thanks to a berserk Annakin). In fact, she would have been dead except that Wierdo used her new heal ability on Starria while she was being mauled.
The upside was that each wolf is worth a whopping 2000xp, which got Starria up a level as a ranger (now Cleric/Ranger 3/3 - apparently the 'experience' of being stunned for almost the entire battle was very valuable indeed)., and everyone else much closer to levelling.

An evil cleric was in the mine; there no longer, we're all fine.
{Miseri levels up}
A wizard nimble on his toes; but bootless to his grave he goes.
{Kagain and Montaron level up}
Another wizard woke from his nap; just in time to update my map.
Larswood we were passing through; when recruited to the bandit crew.
Tazok was the one that fled; the others in the camp lay dead.
Giant spider found at Peldvale; where can we find a ring for sale?
{Imoen and Montaron level up}
A murderous druid tries to lie; but he becomes the next to die.
{Viconia levels up}
After a quick stop to resupply; told an ogre mage not to cry.
A girl was missing a bundle of fur; we were able to comfort her.
Finally back to the mines we're pulled; to pick up Prism's emerald.
A trip to the coast, not too far; brought back an idol of Kozah.
Back to the temple with captain Brage; without his sword no more a rager.
A wounded paladin gifts a shield; with ogres gone he should soon be healed.
{Viconia levels up}
Poor fishermen were in great distress; relieved with the death of a priestess.
{Miseri, Kagain and Montaron level up}
Imoen's talents are not just to sing; she's also handy to steal a ring.
Character progress to date is:
Miseri - Berserker L6, 70 HP, 5* dagger (though nearly always uses a bow due to problem of keeping enough throwing daggers), 21% kills.
Kagain - Berserker L6, 61 HP, 5* axe (often uses a bow, but also often tanks at front),18% kills.
Montaron - Fighter / Assassin L5/5, 31 HP, 2* long sword / short bow (normally uses bow, but occasionally sneaks ahead for a backstab), 38% kills (he is comfortably the best missile user and ranged combat accounted for virtually all deaths in the early game).
Imoen - Bard L6, 42 HP, 1* staff / crossbow (normally shoots, but sometimes sings or casts), 8% kills.
Viconia - Priest of Talos L6, 19 HP, 1* hammer / sling (normally shoots, but sometimes casts), 9% kills.
Edwin - Sorceror L5, 28 HP, 1* sling (normally shoots, but sometimes casts and sometimes lurks invisible), 3% kills.
With Kagain protected by the ring of free action, should be able to take on the cloakwood next.

Aertsalzeth ran into an ogre on the Coast Way. Before we had time to react, it stove poor Immy's head in with it huge morningstar (16 damage > 14 max hp). Luckily Aertsalzeth was able to cast Entangle and deal with it (his sling critical did as much damage as the ogre's attack - kind of a David-and-Goliath scenario I guess), then, after much searching for Immy's stuff, headed off the the Song of the Morning Temple to revive her.
We then headed north to the FAI, but ran into some crazy bandits (they are from DH, but apparently not supposed to spawn until Chapter 2). Since one of them was a powerful mage (who has Shadow Door in Chapter 1?) and the other pretty nifty with a bow, we legged it. The hobgoblins north of the FAI were more something we could handle, though I still intend to head back and hunt our attackers down on my own terms.
Travelling to the South Beregost road caused a crash, which was brought on by a DH assassin with a buggy throwing dagger, so I had to use Near Inifinity to hand-patch it (I just replace it with some plain throwing daggers). It's a shame, but since the assassins are non-vanilla anyway, and the dagger did look a bit overpowered for this stage of the game, I don't suppose it matters. Anyway, I can actually enter the area now - though having seen their stats, I'm a bit worried about my chances given Aertsalzeth is still L1/1 and Immy only L3 (the Melicamp XP really would have helped).

It was indeed the ring of free action, which is a huge benefit in BG1. It was stolen from Dushai at Ulgoth's Beard. In vanilla she is easy to kill and therefore there's no real risk to pickpocketing her (I always charm her first to get her away from others - tends to be the only use I make of Algernon's cloak). However, in SCS she is a dangerous mage, which is why I left it so long to go there. In the event my pickpocketing was successful so I didn't have to use the heavy handed tactics I had prepared.Wierdo wrote...
