Update for Rhea.

Rather than go straight for the mines I decided that Rhea should acquire the greenstone amulet first - more to make the kobold shaman safe than for Mulahey.  As a precursor to that she did a number of reputation quests to get that up to 20 and get a better purchase price.

Successfully reviving Melicamp got her to level 5 and another 7 HPs.  Returning Kylee's dagger achieved level 6 and 9 more HPs.  No problem in the mines and she has just picked up Samuel to return him to the Friendly Arm.  She will need to ask the priest there to help her out with identifying a few things.

Edit: And Rhea's just fallen against Bassilus.  She should have been able to finish him off easily enough, but 2 unholy blights interspersed with 2 critical misses saw her downfall. Still, even though she was pretty unlucky, there was no need for the slightest risk there, so I don't think I've got enough patience to make progress at the moment.  Time for a little break I think.

Final Update for Tezrian (Monk) - so I'll be briefer than usual.

Cleared the mines successfully and took care of Nimbul with the unwilling help of Edwin and Hamster Boy :) Visited the carnival and obtained the Necklace of Missiles (and used the Oompha tip to open one of the chests). The Ogre also helped against the crazy mage and proved an able distraction.

Cleared High Hedge and dealt with Bassilus and then moved onto the Basilisk area where my run came to an end. Was going very well .. but I foolishly didn't notice when my potion of protection from petrification came to an end and.. that was that! A shame to end on such a note but I guess it's usually player error one way or another :) At least it was a Greater Basilisk rather than a hobgoblin!

Interesting. I've just installed GemRB on Ubuntu which took me 30 minutes or so to work out, then pointed it at my BGT no-reload install and all of a sudden I was walking around the Amnish docks.

GemRB runs BG1 and 2 OK, but seems to get upset by TuTu and BGT. I managed to get TuTu working with few issues (no chapter text, for example, since it gives me the SoA screen) but I don't know about BGT.

It runs quicker and smoother than under Wine (particularly load and save times) so was looking forward to trying multiplayer but can't (click the multiplayer button and nothing happens).

No multiplayer yet unfortunately. The whole thing is a bit unfinished to be honest, and probably not enough for a no-reload, but I gather it works as well as Wine now, in many respects, so it might be worth it.

Gate70 wrote...
Maybe we should start a GemRB thread in the BG tech support forum rather than de-rail the no-reload further?

Probably. They do have their own forums but it wouldn't let me post there last time, and anyway it might be good to link people here up with what's going on over there.

Speaking of no-reloads, I think I'm going to try once more with a Sorcerer/Monk (might have to take Sleep over Colour Spray after all) but I've been working on a Druid/Mage mod (no idea if it'll work) which I want to try out.

*New Run* Ronwe (Human, LN, Conjurer)

Str: 10
Dex: 18
Con: 16
Int: 18
Wis: 18
Chr: 7

Weapon Proficiency: Sling *

When selecting starting spells I opted to include Find Familiar - and found for LN that meant a ferrett when I summoned him in Candlekeep!?! At least he's cute and seems to have some useful thief abilities which will be handy.

Completed all the usual quests in CC and immediately ditched Imeon. Xzar and Monatron then felt my wrath. Ronwe cast blind on Montaron while the ferrett took apart Xzar. Once the Necromancer fell Montaron was slain by Ronwe's sling and the ferretts seemingly deadly fangs :) Collecting the resultant loot we headed the usual route to Beregost (High Hedge then East).

Beregost: Visiting Feldepost's Marl was consoled for 900XP and, with the assistance of my ferretty-friend, Algernon was relieved of his cloak. I didn't realise Familiar's were so useful :D Bought the book for the Sage from Candlekeep and dropped it into the house across the way for some XP and gold.

Charmed Silke and then led Karlet out to eat her magic missiles. Silke then assisted in clearing the spiders before being slain in turn with the help of my newly charmed friends Marl & D. Selling the excess loot (and levelling up :) ) Ronwe also purchased the +1 sling and more ammunition.

Now heading north towards the Friendly Arm Inn.

<Note that when the yanks say root they just mean a stick> bloody disappointing!

For the "yanks", also worth noting that "root" means to "cheer on, support".

Being an Aussie myself, I remember laughing long and loud when reading a Batman comic as a kid - the dynamic duo had just visited a fan-organised event held by the "Robin Rooters" club. They had a huge "Robin Rooters" banner up and everything! It still makes me laugh, thinking about it.

*Update* Ronwe (Human, LN, Conjurer)

Heading north the ferrett scouted out a safe route to the centre of the map from which point the Ogre with the belt fetish was tracked down and assassinated (Blindness is a great spell - don't know why I didn't use it previously!) and slew the Dire Wolf guarding the rock containing the hidden Ring of Protection +1. And enough XP was gained to advance to lvl 3 :)

Arriving at The Friendly Arm Inn the guards in the vicinity of the Temple were charmed and helped bring down the mage assassin who accosted Ronwe on the stairs. Entering the Inn the gnome was given his belongings from the Spider House in Beregost. Khalid and Jahiera were spotted and the Ferrett relieved J of the potion of invisibility. Unfortunately Khalid spotted the little creature and as a result the whole room turned hostile. Given the spell casting ability of the Innkeeper this was not a good thing. Embarking on a charm frenzy with the cloak while the ferrett led Khalid on a merry chase around the tables the room was soon pacified. However I'm starting to think I might be getting a bit charm crazy... Given the trouble they had caused I dragged the pair outside and had J cast entangle on the two of them before setting my faithful guards on them. This didn't quite go according to plan and Khalid slew all 4 of them after slaying his companion. Then began a prolonged chase around the grounds of the Inn while Ronwe tried to bring him down with his sling while the crazed half elf swore to fillet my faithful ferrett. He nearly succeeded at one point so I will be more careful with my familiar moving forward.

With the quest for the ring also completed the pair prepared to move on.

Erm .. how long does it take for the charm to wear off ? Or can I no longer use this inn now as I had to charm the innkeeper ?

This run is already feeling pretty chaotic but I am having fun so far :)

*Update* Ronwe (Human, LN, Conjurer)

Leaving the charming Inn behind Ronwe & his faithful familiar travelled south to the Temple at Beregost for some healing before heading west to High Hedge to buy some Second Level Spells. Using the cloak gained an expendable elven ranger escort who helped defeat the gnolls surrounding the fortified holding of the mage.

Meeting the master of the fortified holding Ronwe purchased invisibility and Mirror Image and updated his spellbook.

Leaving High Hedge behind (and after a brief rest) Ronwe moved south of Beregost clearing the whole area of foes. The Ogrillon's were charmed and set against bands of gibberlings and hobgoblins (I tried to avoid hobs with bows as the Oggrillon's are so slow). The main band of hobgoblins with the boots of stealth were dealt with via sleep spells and Ronwe's trusty sling as were the ghouls and ghasts encountered. Defeating the latter took him to level 4 :)

Heading back into Beregost the letter was passed to the wife for the Ring of Protection +1, a knock spell used to steal the B Sword +1 from the smithy (duly sold back to the smith for a profit) and the boots returned to their halfling owner. This has to be the only time I haven't killed the good halfling after completing the quest :) Picked up some +1 bullets as well before heading down towards Nashkall.

The charm wears off after a day, so they will probably all be hostile again next time you come back. As you've guessed there is now limited reason for returning anyway as the innkeeper can't serve you when charmed. That's not really a loss as you can rest without risk of ambush anywhere in the grounds of the Friendly Arm. You might of course still want to get upstairs at some point, e.g. to pick up some pantaloons.

Yep, read up and discovered multiplayer isn't an option at present. In my opinion I think it is some way off being comparable to the original games under Wine; emulation will be accurate engine wise whereas reverse engineering has a host of differences to be worked out. I have briefly tried BG1 and the inventory/spell screens feel more like Icewind Dale, attacks or spell animations didn't seem synched and the sprite/character/avatar size is too large for everything else (more like Planescape Torment than BG).

Gyan and his companions fought a regular doppelganger on the main grounds of Candlekeep and a greater one up a few floors in the main keep (Jaheira level up to F6/D7).  Gyan feared that an infestation of such creatures would suggest more complications to come.  Gyan also begin to learn more and more about himself, first through a suggestion from Karan, and then from a note written by Gorion himself.  Gyan began to wonder if his childhood illness could be related to his strange past.

Then they were jailed and accused of murder.  Tethtoril helped them escape ... but through the catacombs!  Many more doppelgangers and traps.  Of course, there was some looting for Imoen.  Individual doppelgangers were no problem, and the big group of them (pretending to be Gorion, etc.) was quickly reduced to a single greater one through a myriad of fireballs (4 total: 2 from wands and 2 from necklaces).  Khalid leveled up to F7.

Posted Image

Then came the caves.  Imoen cast Invisibility and searched around for traps and enemies.  She found spiders, basilisks, a few traps, and a hostile party of adventurers/assassins.  Another 4 fireballs took care of almost everyone, and Prat was dispatched quickly with the focus of the entire party on him.

Posted Image

With the traps gone, the spiders were easily taken care of, and Gyan sent a few skeletons to handle the basilisks (which had no problem killing the lizards off screen).

Posted Image

Before returning to Baldur's Gate as wanted criminals, the party took a side trip to Durlag's Tower.  Minsc leveled up (R6) because Imoen disarmed a trap!

Posted Image

In total, a few baddies were killed, and Imoen picked up a tome of wisdom for Gyan.  Then they decided against going into the dungeon, so they returned to Nashkel to ID and sell their loot.  A short stay at the Nashkel Inn led to another strange dream (#5, DUHM).  Nearby, Khalid and Minsc tried to remove a local drow infestation, but they could only get him to Near Death (Minsc dead and Khalid one hit away).  He was magic resistant to magic missiles, so Jaheira sealed the deal with a headshot.  Jaheira was really happy to have lost some reputation!

Posted Image

Gyan had Minsc resurrected at the Song of the Morning Temple, and then they traveled back to Baldur's Gate, hoping things had cooled down a bit.  They met a woman named Tamoko, who told them of the latest news.  It seemed that Gyan had to act fast.  They rescued Eltan (Dy level up I6) and carried him to safety (thanks ogre power gauntlets!).  Next, Gyan ended the lives of everyone who was helping with Sarevok's little plot.  Killing Cythanria led Dy to go hostile, but she did not attack!?  So Gyan charmed her and they all went on their way like nothing had happened.

Posted Image

After that came Slythe (death by entire party effort with Khalid tanking) and Krystin (death by entire party plus Nymph and Khalid protected from magic).

Posted Image

Then came the final moment.  Sarevok had to be stopped and exposed during his own coronation ceremony.  Two sets of summons and arrows of dispelling from Imoen and Minsc helped neutralize the doppelganger threat, and Sarevok's diary derailed his attempt to deny wrongdoing.  In the end, both Belt and Liia survived.

Posted Image

Gyan and his whole party were exhausted, so with Sarevok on the run, the party rested and pursued him at their leisure.  First they made sure to stock up on everything they might need in an encounter with Sarevok on the defensive.  Of course, Gyan had another dream, but this time it gave him confidence in his purpose.  He led his companions into the thieves guild maze.  Green slimes were killed with skeletons, while Khalid and Minsc took care of the rest of the oozes while under free action (from items).  Wands were used against the doom guards.  Imoen disabled traps under invisibility, even the ones right at the feet of the skeleton warriors.  Khalid tanked again against the undead warriors.

Gyan decided to leave Winski to his own fate, and then entered the underground city.  It was not quite what he expected to find, but it did seem to be very appropriate considering the current situation.  Imoen scouted around, still invisible from searching for traps.  She found a hostile group dead ahead.  Minsc was protected from fire with a ring/potion/scroll and missile weapons from belt/boots and approached the group armed with exploding arrows.

Right off the bat, Minsc and Rahvin let loose fireballs from arrows, but Minsc was killed from melee hits, which I did not account for.  So Imoen went in to retrieve Minsc's boots/belt/ring, and Khalid equipped up to try the tactic again using the necklace of missiles.  However, he also use a scroll of magic protection.  The fire took care of everyone except Carston and the mage Shaldrissa in just a couple rounds.  Then he moved in using his swords to finish the last two off.

Posted Image

With Minsc's death, Dy went hostile again, so Gyan charmed her again.

Posted Image

Gyan was not in a rush, so he led everyone out of the depths to raise Minsc (and buy lots more healing potions), and then returned for the final battle.  Tamoko was waiting for them, but Gyan talked her off the cliff.

------------------------------------------------------

I'll make the final battle a separate post.

At the end, Gyan was a level 8 cleric, and ended up with a bit more experience than the normal TotSC cap would allow (197,058), but not have enough for an extra cleric level (9) and thus no level 5 cleric spells.  Imoen did get to level 9 mage after dualing at level 7 thief, but she never stumbled upon any level 5 mage spell scrolls!

Posted Image
Posted Image

Everyone else was level 6 or 7:
Dy - Invoker 6 (51,401 exp)
Minsc - Ranger 6 (46,234 exp)
Jaheira - Fighter 6 / Druid 7 (46,217 + 46,217 exp)
Khalid - Fighter 7 (84,275 exp)

Well, I tried Zukashifu once more, but unfortunately, casting Sleep seemed to crash the game.

So, instead I spent some time getting the Druid/Mage mod to work (in the end I had to remove the Sorcerer/Monk one) and rolled up Tel-rebbin, a Chaotic Neutral Elven Druid/Mage. What do you know, it actually worked, but unfortunately it didn't seem as though he was able to scribe scrolls, and when he cast Find Familiar (I think he gets a cat) the game crashed again, so no luck there. Well, I might try and iron these issues out, but if I'm going to play one of these classes it'll probably have to be in vanilla BG2 (maybe ToB) - the Druid/Mage might work in vanilla BG1, I guess, but I'm not sure a no-reload run is going to be feasible right now.

It might be time for a Shapeshifter game after all.

Just rolled up a Shapeshifter in standard TuTu. Great fun, though Werewolf form seems rather powerful at early stages. Unfortunately, he got jumped by a couple of wolves. The mistake was to try and cast Entangle instead of shapeshifting, because once one got off a hit I don't think I would have been able to glug a potion. I tried to flee, but alas the other wolf managed to finish me off. Back to the drawing board.

*Final Update* Ronwe (Human, LN, Conjurer)

Headed South into Nashkall and was promptly killed by the Assassin Nahlia (sp) who managed to get off a hold spell. Note to self: should have got the Green Amulet...

The Fred: Sorry your Shapeshifter didn't pan out! I've just created one today. The werewolf shape is pretty tough - STR 19, Dex 16 and Con 15 with 2 attacks per round. Only downside is with the 15 Con it has less HP than the Druid inhuman form. Looks like I can where a ring of protection and it stacks OK. Does the belt from the Ogre also work correctly on the werewolf form ? And if I get bracers of AC will it lower my AC further still ?

The final battle was pretty much a disaster.  In retrospect, I could have done so many things differently, including running away to raise Gyan's fallen comrades very close to the end.

Gyan had the party prep with a few skeleton summons to help with the casters.  Imoen approached in the shadows to figure out their arrangement, but Sarevok saw her and called out.  Semaj teleported in.

Posted Image

There was no real way Semaj by himself was going to do anything, but then Angelo appeared.  I knew he had exploding arrows, but after casting a remove magic, he went straight into melee distance.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Then, things went bad fast.  First, Semaj did something I had never seen:  Magic Staff and Tattoo of Power.  Imoen and Khalid were confused and Dy went hostile.  Then Angelo started fireballing from right next to skeletons.  I had those who were still active add fire protections, but Imoen/Dy/Khalid were done.  With the protection from fire going, Minsc looked like he could take care of Semaj and Angelo, while Gyan drank a potion of speed and kept Tazok busy.  Sarevok did not show up, so it looked like the last 3 could make things work.

Posted Image

Then, Aneglo started to hit Minsc with other arrows that did more damage (lightning?).  I was surprised that he had a +2 to his rolls with Minsc right on him (I should have had Minsc pick up Khalid's boots and belt), and he hit every time it seemed.

Posted Image

Minsc died quickly at that point.  Potions did not help at 3 APR.  Then Angelo went for Jaheira, and I was sure it was over, but just before death she killed him!

Posted Image

With only melee opponents remaining, I had hope.  Although, with a cleric and a druid, all that loot sat on the ground and did not help much, except for lots of healing potions.  But Gyan and Jaheira just ran around like crazy children and took bits and pieces off of Tazok until he died (Jaheira used a summon insects, for example).  And then everything was calm.

Posted Image

So, the two healed up and faced what they hoped was the last challenge.  They came from both sides to take on Sarevok (wish they could have used the dispelling arrows!).  Of course, it was going to be hard to hit him.

Posted Image

So they ran around some more and slowly Magic Missiled (wand) and stoned him to death.

Posted Image

And that was it.  It kind of felt like I lost the battle, but I am happy to not have to start over!  On to Athkatla and beyond.

Well done SpiffyKeen.  Rather than feel like it was a loss I think that was a real triumph to rescue the situationPosted Image.  Good luck in Amn.

The pattern of damage shown is almost certainly from arrows of detonation.  I assume that Minsc only had 40% or 50% protection from fire up (either that or his resistance was only partially effective - see recent discussion in this thread).

The reason why Angelo was not suffering the negative to hit is that Minsc will have been using 2-handed sword or similar with range of 2 - meaning Angelo was not treated as being in melee range.  This is a major problem with the AI when attacking a ranged weapon user.  You can override this by moving the character next to the opponent and then attacking them.

Yes, congrats. The tattoo etc appear in my BGT install, think I commented in my last run about this and Angelo's remove magic. Not been paying attention to which version of the game you're using.

Grond0, I'd say the arrow damage received by Minsc looks more like arrows of biting?

Don't think so. Arrows of biting poison if you fail a saving throw, but I would then expect a whole series of 1HP damage. The pattern above of arrow damage + 2 further lots of damage on impact is characteristic of arrows of detonation (d6 damage from impact and 3d6 from explosion with a further 3d6 if fail saving throw - though it looks as though Minsc had partial reduction of the explosion damage from his fire resistance).

Are you sure - just had a quick "play" and reckon it was his arrows of ice which have three effects, detonation appear to only have two.

Edit, well done V.

Normal ice arrows just do 1d2 damage in addition to the arrow itself, so unless they were changed by a mod it couldn't be them.  Detonation will do either 2 or 3 lots of damage depending on whether the saving throw is made or not.

*New Run* Waelvri, Half-Elf, Druid - Shapeshifter

Str: 18
Dex: 18
Con: 16
Int: 6
Wis: 18
Cha: 15

This was a cracking roll - my first attempt (died that quickly I didn't record it here) could only manage a Str of 10 so this was an improvement. My thoughts were that it would be handy to be able to take the druid in Half-Elf form to Str 19 for when the Werewolf form lost it's lustre. It's also the lowest Int score I've ever used (10 being the minimum normally) so I was caught out a bit when finding I was too stupid to be able to use the Wand of Magic Missiles :) Hopefully not too many other items will be similar effected!

I've also decided not to spam everyone with my attempts too early so will start notating runs when I reach level 4 or 5 so presumably will get somewhere.

East of Candlekeep: Looted Imoen and ripped through Xzar & Montaron in wolfie form to get their potions (the potions of speed being especially nice with the werewolf form).

High Hedge -> Beregost: Completed my now usual routine (kill Algernon, Coin Book to Firebead, charm Silke into killing the dwarf, take out the spiders, turn on Silke with the help of Marl & Co, put Marl into the locked house next to Feldposts, steal the barstard sword +1).

High Hedge: The wolf form is pretty effective against the undead so cleared out the spawns then charmed and used the Ranger to shot the spiders with his bow and then later as a partial shield for the remaining monsters.

Beregost: Returned Perdue's sword - but found the dwarf assassin was still inside ?! Killed him again for good measure.

North of Beregost: Used wolf form to clear most of the Map (and meet Elminster :) ) then switched out to use the sling to take down the Ogre.

Friendly Arm Inn: Cleared the Hobgob menace then charmed some assistance for the mage. All the guards survived and were moved into a house :) I did decide to briefly add Jahiera and Khalid to get the invisibility potion... Not sure if that completely invalidates it being a solo run - thoughts on a postcard please! Passed on the goodies from the spider house to it's rightful owner.

Nashkal: Dealt with the assassin with the help of an insect swarm spell (love that one!) but was a bit annoyed I couldn't camp anywhere on the Nashkal map - no matter how far away you go from the town. Gained Larloch's minor drain ability while there which is handy for interruptions. I'll aim to be evil to get the second one then switch to increasing my reputation :)

So currently Level 5 and loving it. Should have ignored all the negative threads about how gimped this kit is and tried it sooner.
