Prevents use of all wands and scrolls.  That's not as serious as for a non-arcane character, but still means you can't use wands of fear or heavens, which are potentially useful for a druid.

Friendly Arm Inn: Cleared the Hobgob menace then charmed some assistance for the mage. All the guards survived and were moved into a house :) I did decide to briefly add Jahiera and Khalid to get the invisibility potion... Not sure if that completely invalidates it being a solo run - thoughts on a postcard please!

It's entirely up to you.  I'm strict about it - even ending a run in the unlikely event that Imoen manages to talk to me after Gorion's ambush.  Most people are happy to add NPCs in as needed.  If you want the potion without recruiting Jaheira then you can charm both her and Khalid and then have an unfortunate accident during a marital squabble!

Nashkal: Dealt with the assassin with the help of an insect swarm spell (love that one!) but was a bit annoyed I couldn't camp anywhere on the Nashkal map - no matter how far away you go from the town.

You can safely travel to the carnival (no travel time, so no ambush possibility) and rest there.

Green protection scrolls require 9 INT and so do all wands AFAIK.

Presumably there are a few other items which require INT, but the only one that comes to mind is the Golem Manual, but that's not relevant for a druid.

Sorry your Shapeshifter didn't pan out! I've just created one today. The werewolf shape is pretty tough - STR 19, Dex 16 and Con 15 with 2 attacks per round.

Indeed, werewolf form is very powerful, even if it can lower your Dex and Con. I think I actually have some rebalancing mod installed, not sure though.

Normal ice arrows just do 1d2 damage in addition to the arrow itself, so unless they were changed by a mod it couldn't be them.  Detonation will do either 2 or 3 lots of damage depending on whether the saving throw is made or not.

I think there is one kind of elemental arrow with a save for half. It's not fire, that's save for non. I thought it was ice, could be acid though (although I'm not sure if either of those are used in the final battle).

Thanks everyone!

I feel much better about the victory given some time to get separated from managing the battle (I posted rather soon after the battle).  I am especially thankful that Jaheira managed to save the day for me.  Gyan was almost no help in the battle (I should have played him differently).  Defeating the first 3 was very satisfying!  I agree that a close call
with a victory snatched from the jaws of defeat is the best.

The reason I felt bad at all about the result was that Sarevok was defeated with lots of running around (everyone hasted the whole time) and basically only wands of missiles (it felt kinda silly and kinda cheesy).  Of course, Sarevok would have used any means necessary to win, too :).  I also was suffering again from overconfidence, and was disappointed in the way things went.

As for Minsc, in the last picture with him alive, the first set of damage corresponds to the explosion arrows, while the last 3 sets are some other type of arrow.  The animation shows what looks like lightning, but I guess it could be the animation for cold instead.   And thanks for the tip about range=2 weapons.  If I was to play that situation again, I would have picked up Khalid's anti-missile equipment and forced Minsc right up against Angelo before attacking.  That would have made a difference of 4+3+5=12 on the attack rolls!

@Vaclavc - Nice work.  I have now seen a few people use the lightning strategy against Karoug.  I remember reloading like 20 times in that battle the last time I tried, and that was with a party.  I rarely do that subquest during no-reload runs as it seems to risky.  In future I need to try that quest again (and the lower levels of Durlag's Tower).

Lightning crossbow bolts in vanilla are 8 dmg +4D4, and if the target saves, 1/2 of the 4D4.

Eldrymon in Durlag’s Tower:

In the first underground level, Eldrymon defeated four warders by luring them one by one to the back of the room.
Posted Image

In the second level, Eldrymon carefully avoided all traps and passed through as quickly as possible.
Posted Image

In the third level, Eldrymon defeated elemental guardians and won chessboard battle protected from lightning.
Posted Image

In the fourth level, Eldrymon answered all riddles and challenged Demonknight. He blocked him with summons and killed him with bullets +2.
Posted Image

Following our previous discussion earlier in this thread, I paid close attention to his casting. Demonknight cast: Dispel, Fireball, PW:Stun, Symbol Fear, Symbol Pain on protagonist, ignoring summons. I know from my previous runs that he likes to cast PW:Kill sometimes.

Happy new year to everyone!

Ouch! Just had a funny death. Went to deal with Brage and started to cast the insects spell on his cousin .. however she got off a rigid thinking spell before I could finish casting .. and Brage came out of the hidden map to ask me his riddle anyway. Thinking it'd mean death to tell Brage I'd kill him when I was stuck with rigid thinking I accepted to take him back to the Temple to Helm. That got me out of the combat situation .. However I then attacked Brage in the temple due to the Rigid Thinking and got slain by skeletons summoned by the priest and blows from Brage as well :D Doh!

Tough luck there Melchom - but as you can see, rigid thinking on a solo character (at least am assuming you are solo otherwise rigid thinking isn't the end) is rough - need to defend/avoid if possible.

Pretty much any disabling spell can be a death sentence for a solo character. It's arguable that something like Rigid Thinking is far worse in a party since it's AoE, and since your team can kill each other. At least if you're solo, there's a small chance that you might be able to outlast your foe(s) if they don't have much firepower or if they're disabled themselves somehow. On the other hand, you've got nobody to try and Dispel it or anything.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Melchom.

Final update on Eldrymon:
Upon returning from Durlag’s Tower with Soultaker, Eldrymon had to exterminate all cultists in Ulgoth’s Beard. For the fight with Aec’Letec, Eldrymon summoned skeletons to block the demon and then killed him with Cloudkill cast from scroll.
Posted Image

After completing many remaining sidequests, it was time to finish Sarevok. Eldrymon entered temple of Bhaal with following equipment:
Posted Image

He killed Battle Horrors first. Next, Eldrymon dispelled buffs of all four enemies and dispatched Semaj. This time, I succeeded in luring Sarevok alone near entrance, where he was blocked with summons and peppered with bullets +2 until he died.

Eldrymon will continue in SoA.

I was rolling up some characters in multi-player to use in another post and thought I might as well try and run them through as a no-reload as well.  As a created party they really should be far too strong for BG1, but so be itPosted Image

These are the Funkels - which, with their names, might give you some idea of my intentions.
Jack
Stan
Roy (may dual to cleric, but not in BG1)
Gus
Lee

The Funkels are underway.  After finishing in Candlekeep, including teaching Firebead a lesson, they headed to Beregost and did a few chores - these included a bit of deliberately poor burglary  to manage reputation down in order to get the evil Bhaal power.  With a paladin in the party there's a need for rather more careful reputation managment than normal.

Moving on down to Nashkel the group overcame Neira, though Stan was brought to near death by an unholy blight.  After a fling at the carnival it was time to explore the mines.  A group of kobold archers on the surface proved surprisingly accurate with their bows.  Needing criticals to hit Stan 3 of them rolled a 20 simultaneously.  Fortunately one of them was targeting Roy as Stan was left with only 2 HP.

After clearing the mine down to the kobold chieftain a mistake led to the first casualty of the run.  Gus was supposed to just be providing encouragement while the others engaged, but got included in an attack all command.  I only noticed this when he got poisoned by the kobold chieftain and he was poisoned again before he could get back out of range.  The fast-acting poison killed him before a potion could take effect.

Mulahey was much smoother.  Lee's sleep spell caught all the summoned kobolds and stopped most of the skeletons getting into action.  With the group free to concentrate on Mulahey they successfully disrupted both the spells he attempted.

By learning a few spells found in Mulahey's cave Lee got just enough XP to get a level up - all the rest of the group had already got at least one level.  Levels are rather harder to come by in a party than while solo, particularly for multi-classed characters!

Good luck Grond0! I have to admit I've had the same thought RE going for a party. Since my last abortive run I've been experimenting a bit with dual-classing (never used it before). But I'm unsure how well I'd cope once I've dualed to the new class if I stayed solo. And the learning curve involved in surviving solo has meant my runs haven't got that far lately (not even Cloakwood Mines for the last few!!). Of course I've probably just jinxed myself now :D

It's usually my tendency to save resources rather than use them ("Do I really need to use that potion ? If I survive another round I'll be able to keep it for later!"), trying and get as far as possible in as short a game-time without resting and getting the occasional urge to gamble in a closely matched fight and see what the fates decree that kills my solo runs .. whereas with a party you share the pain and have plenty of backup which means I should get further. Just want to complete a run now so I'll be trying to behave :)

And I hate kobolds .. they're always 'surprisingly accurate' - and usually with those bloody flaming arrows ;)

Indeed.  It always annoys me that you get such derisory XP for something that is quite capable of killing a 4th or 5th level mage with one shotPosted Image.

Alexander enters the challenge, BGT Ascension SCSI,II Core

Truly a child prodigy, Alex excels in many areas, having made the most out of his residence in the beacon of knowledge that is Candlekeep. Faerun is inhabited by many mighty characters, some are fierce brutes, others - masters of the arcane arts. But few can pride themselves in being both extremely strong and agile, while having an equally impressive intellectual capacity. Alexander is one of those few. This stems from his obsessive compulsion to learn and gain knowledge, whilst having a very balanced but rigurous workout schedule.

Gorion sensed his talent and potential from a very young age, and made all the efforts to ensure he gets the best training conditions. This even included a private and extremely exclusive practice session series with a samurai master, who travelled a considerable distance just to meet and train the young lad. This explains Alex's deep knowledge and skill of the Katana sword, a weapon seldom found in the Sword Coast.

Posted Image

However, would all this be enough to prepare young Alex for the insurmountable challenge that lies ahead? I guess it remains to be seen...

Having hastily made preparations upon Gorion's urgent request, Alex and his foster father embark on what would be a very brief journey in tandem. Not even a day passes until the two find themselves ambushed by a very sinister armored figure and his henchmen. This would be a day to remember for Alex, but for the darkest of reasons, as he watches his beloved parent get slaughtered. His last words.. run for your life. So he did. And to his surprise, Imoen, the ditzy and childish sister of Alex, followed suit. Together they pair up and follow the only trail of information they have. Travel to The Friendly Arm Inn and seek out Jaheira and Khalid, two people who can help them.

And so begins an epic journey across the lands of the Sword Coast, pairing with new friends, while losing others in battle. Even Alexander himself nearly succumbed to his death, when the gender ogre smacked him silly, leaving him with just one meager life point. Perhaps it was a rash decision to take on such a fierce beast at such an early stage of his development. He will have to be more careful fromm now on..

Alexander is almost overwhelmed by the amount of decisions he has to make in such a brief period of time, more so when you consider the fact that he is young and unwise to the outside world. Perhaps it was foolish to part ways with Jaheira and Khalid, the very two people Gorion recommended wholeheartedly as allies. But Alex made a judgement call. Upon seeing and feeling first hand the challenges and monsters he has to face and defeat, he decided that only the strongest people shall venture with him forward, irregardless of their alignment or personal views. The result of this was the forming of a very ecclectic and peculiar party composition. But even though it seems random and inconsistent, in Alex's mind, everyone plays a very specific and important role, which might just give them the extra edge to survive the harsh path ahead. However, sacrifices had to be made to reach this point. Jaheira and Khalid's departures were mentioned. But there was also the irresolvable dispute between Minsc and Edwin concerning Dynaheir. Not going into much detail, let's just say she suffered an unfortunate accident, being mauled to death just moments after her rescue, by a pack of rabid gnolls.

Aside from the gender ogre mishap, which nearly put Alex on life support, the systematic and pragmatic approach by which he led his party ensured a clean sweep of a vast number of areas thus far. The only unfortunate bastard was Edwin, who might be better off purchasing a lifetime membership at the Temple of Lathander when it comes to ressurections.

A few highlights were the battle with the evil priest Basileus. Luckily, Alex was cunning enough to manipulate Basil into killing all his undead minions, otherwise the balance of power might have been drastically shifted. But alas, even though Alex was Held the entire fight, the other five companions he so carefully drafted, proved their quality and worth.

After that, some more bandit fights followed. Some gibberlings and other lesser creatures also fell in numbers, under Alex & Co's steadily growing strength.

But then, this happened.. A lonely paladin woman in the woods requested the party's help. Her plea, assist in dispatching a pack of gibberlings. One might expect maybe a dozen of the little buggers to show up. But certainly not THIS:

Posted Image

Panic ensued, especially since Edwin, the sole mage, didn't have acces to area of effect damage spells yet. However, he did have a couple of Sleeps and Horrors at hand. Which proved to be providential. Also, if the fight started with the team having about two dozen potions in their inventory, it ended with maybe a couple left.

Posted Image

I guess sometimes, quantity can be just as difficult to overcome as quality. But Alex's story fortunately did not end here. And what a pathetic ending that would have been..

Now it's off to the Nashkel Mines for some Kobold Genocide!

@ Serg Thank you. I followed your advice, but as you can see, the result is not perfect. My ideal is for the images to show directly on the forum, ENLARGED and without people being able to see the link. Like Vaclavc's pics before me are displayed.

@ Melchom Thanks! And yeah, i installed the exotic weapons pack from BG2 Tweak, which adds two katanas in the blacksmith shop in Beregost. And there's a couple of other ones found in the game besides those, the best being a Katana +1 which you find in the Undercity, just before you face Sarevok. Unfortunately, i also had to install the Altered Item Shattering mod from BGT Tweak so that they don't break, since apparently even exotic items made from the finest metal in Faerun are subjected to iron contamination (makes zero sense).

You should get that by just clicking on the IMG code box within Photobucket.  If that's not working then perhaps your settings there need tweaking.  You can see what format other people are using by using quote on their posts and then clicking the BBCode button to show links rather than pictures.  This is helpful to check your format against someone else's.

All I can do is quote the BG1 manual:

Gibberling 'They come screaming, jabbering, and howling out of the night.  Dozens, maybe hundreds, of hunchbacked, naked humanoids swarm unceasingly forward. They have no thought of safety, subtlety, or strategy, leaving others with no hope of stopping their mass assault.  And then, having come and killed, the gibberlings move on randomly back into the night.'

At least I went for dozens, not hundreds! :)

I wasn't complaining at all - just noting that that encounter's a bit of a shock to the system the first time through SCSPosted Image.  My favourite way of playing it is to position everyone on the bridge and let the gibberlings push and shove from both ends desperate to come to grips with them.

Funkels update.

Returning from the mine they encountered Nimbul.  Regrettably a couple of characters were caught in the fringes of his confusion spell and their subsequent actions turned a couple of guards (and hence the rest of Nashkel) hostile.  Nimbul forced Roy to hide in the inn, but he was already out of dangerous spells by the time he was blinded by Lee.

Picked up Samuel and returned him to the Friendly Arm.  On the way back a bandit ambush triggered.  Fortunately Lee got a shield up in time and survived the initial barrage while the others cut down the opposition.  A half-ogre turned up while looting the bodies, but he forgot to bring any friends and just added to the body count.

Going to take revenge on some half-ogres for Bjornin I was initially intending to leave Drizzt alone, but the temptation of his armour for a fighter/thief PC proved too much.  With his improved AC Jack ventured his first backstab of the run - accounting for Jemby.  After getting Bjornin's shield the group took on Silke.  Jack's Bhaal power interrupted her initial spell and she didn't get another chance.  Jack also managed to pickpocket an extra potion of defense before the merchants could get away.

While clearing Arghain's area the Funkels were ambushed by Lamalha.  However, they had already taken some damage so I ran away immediately.  On returning only the clerics showed up.  It's possible the thieves were in stealth somewhere, but I suspect that they just hadn't spawned by the time the Funkels had left the area initially.  Next up was the xvart village.  No problems there - with a party Borda is pretty easy; he just managed scare Gus before expiring.

@AlexdeLarge

Welcome to the challenge!

I too have recently started a game with Razor (Half-Orc Fighter/Assassin, NE, Longsword ** & Longbow **, S19 D18 C19 I15 W16 Ch5) and his sister in crime (Selina, Half-Elf Mage/Cleric [Priest of Talos], CE, Daggers * & Single Weapon Style *, S8 D18 C16 I18 W18 Ch15). Both have had their kids modded using Level1NPCs.

I'm yet to be convinced of the Fighter/Assassin's power by comparison to (say) a Berserker/Thief. However, the assassin class +1/+1 to hit/damage rolls is pretty hand and this seems to be compounded by backstabs. I've never seen him do less than 10hp per melee hit, which guarantee's instant death to 1HD monsters like gibberlings (even when playing on max hp for all monsters/NPCs/PCs, like I do). This noted, the poison weapon ability is effectively useless against lesser monsters - but was good for taking out the ogre with the belts.

Selina's Priest of Talos kit is handy at low levels as it allows her to cast a lightning bolt, and the Storm Shield will be useful later for short-term elemental protection. Even at level 1/1 she is a spell casting powerhouse.

Both Razor & Selina are evil and I am role-playing them as such (to make a change from the CG gnome I played previously). This doesn't mean that they won't pretend to be nice to get their own way, but don't turn your back and watch out :D

They decided to let Imoen tag along for the time being as she is good with locks, but that is pretty much the only reason. Razor & Selina find her never-ending chirpiness to be irritating to the extreme.

As expected, I'm playing using tutu, SCS, various tweak mods, Rogues Rebalancing etc. etc.

Similar to Alex, the biggest challenge so far has been defeating several groups of gibberlings and xvarts (around 30 in total) that attacked en-masse while the party was still on level 1 (in the area below the FAI, with the caravans, bandits and ogre). Accidentally set off more than one group by wandering too far.

Amazingly the threesome survived after Selina used almost every spell available (lightning bolt, sleep & command) and Razor quaffed their single speed potion (stolen from one of the bums that ambushed and killed Gorion) and two healing potions. Oh it feels GOOD to be challenged by a bunch of gibberlings once again!

As noted, Razor used his poison weapon ability and backstabbed the ogre with the belts. Imoen had just levelled up (level 2!) and was relishing her 16hp (temporarily more than Razor at 13hp). Unfortunately for Imoen, I was a bit tiddly on some nice scotch and busy scrambling for BBQ 'Shapes' biscuits when the ogre wandered too close to her. While I was thusly distracted by my hunger, a single lucky hit from the ogre scored 18hp damage on her, killing her stoney-dead just before the poison took his own life.
