Good luck Silver-star!

I've started a new character - having another go with a wild mage.  The aim is to try and keep his XP down so that he is genuinely level 1 until the final battle with Sarevok.

In Candlekeep I fancied buying a bag of holding, but didn't have the money for it.  Used a considerable number of wild surges until this eventually happened.  In the meantime Gael had turned a nasty shade of red and temporarily become a woman, before reverting to a man!

He travelled to Beregost and used Marl to kill Algernon for him.  Then down to Nashkel.  The guards disposed of Neira and he picked up some armour from a field.  At the carnival Oopah killed Zordral and Vitiare before turning friendly.  That gave him enough money for the amulet of shielding.

Down to the mines where Greywolf became the victim of some kobolds, though a couple of them were killed in the process - should probably have taken him up to visit the ghoul instead.  Here's Gael at the entrance to the mines.

You're one crazy mofo Grond0! How the hell can u actually solo the entire game being level 1?! Like how is that even possible. It will blow my mind if you actually achieve this..

Btw, i'm gonna have to postpone the rest of my run for about a week, as i'm really busy at the moment. But i'm definitely committed to finishing it afterwards.

@Grond0: How did you move those guys out of their general areas???? Is it a mod? Or is it Number 2 which I haven't found yet?

Edit: My next post will have me finishing the mines.

I know how to do every required encounter in the game - in this thread I was doing a zero XP run without any items at all and progress is far easier using Algernon's cloak and various protections.  That wasn't no-reload, but using items all encounters can be made relatively easy - the problem is just the normal one in no-reload of being able to string together a whole collection unbroken successful encounters.

Enemies will chase you in/out of buildings in BG2 and I'm using the BG2 engine (through BGT).  You can also normally drag friends after you by force-attacking your character with them before you exit the area.

@Grond0 ooh now that is creative game play! If you can succeed at this you can impress just about anyone, I think =) good luck to you too!

Went to Larswood and was ambushed by the second party of would be assasins. We had all of our spells, so Reenie and Imoen quickly buffed with mirror image Image IPB Jaheira charmed the tough fighter guy Image IPB and Reenie prevented the evil cleric guy from casting unholy blights.  Image IPB  (see Immy stunned by the gnome mage's stun darts, they are so clever!)

The group had very spiffy improved items thanks to a mod, and with SCS scripting they could be really deadly, but all went smoothly. The dwarf guy had a very nasty two hander axe, but was neutralised by Viccy.  Image IPB That was some nice team work on our part.

After that, rested, and Reenie scouted the area and came upon this ugly group Image IPB just perfect for practising her fireball throwing skills Image IPB and we rescued a fellow svirfneblin too!  Image IPB

Crazy druid Osmadi was troublesome. He had a poisoned weapon thanks to a mod and that really hurt all, he made all of his saving throws and casted his spells, and he had summoned dire leopards. Dire leopards are amazingly dangerous, they haste themselves and hit like a truck, very nearly killed Khalid, Jaheira kept on healing him. Reenie used her lightning wand to finish Osmadi off. Image IPB The other druid was easier, fell to a single command. We looted some more magical equipment. Went to Beregost to sell stuff and buy neccesary things. Hope all goes well. ^^

I thought Gael was going to be safely through the mines, but he failed at the last hurdle.  Going through he kept a good advance guard in front of him to try and close down the archers, while he picked them off with charms.  Had a bit of trouble with the kobold chieftain as he kept turning hostile again after being charmed and I eventually sent him off to get killed.

In the cave a scroll of sleep picked up in his travels allowed Gael to form a barrier against the skeletons.  When Mulahey was charmed at the second attempt (going in and out of the cave to avoid any returning spells) that should have spelled success.  However, I had the same problem with the skeletons as with the kobold chieftain that they would only stay charmed for a round or so.  That meant that the balance of friendly and opposing forces wasn't right when the kobolds woke up and the cave entrance got congested - preventing Gael from being able to go in and out - and he took a fatal stab from a kobold.

I think I'll restart him.

@Grond0 aww bugs are annoying, still I think it is an achievement to even go that far with a lvl 1 character, a wild mage no less.

At Larswood, Immy convinced a bandit to let us join them,  Image IPB but Reenie spectacularly blundered infront of big old ugly Tazok Image IPB but all is well that goes well, and Kivan got what he wanted afterall. Image IPB

Khalid gulped a few potions to tank the archers and we picked them one by one with ranged weapons, Viccy's skeletons covered us, and Reenie fireballed the lot.  Image IPB Viccy's spell held Taugoz 'tenhammer' who was the biggest threat. I was waiting for the tent party to join the fray, they have done so on my previous runs, but something was wrong with their scripts and they stayed inside. Oh well, it made things easier for me. We went inside, Immy's horror spell distracted the deadly archers, (wonderful wonderful spell, pity Reenie can't cast it, being an illusionist and all)  Image IPB but Viccy's hold person was disrupted by an archer. Oh well. Reenie got her backstab Image IPB and the mage Venkt was deftly neutralised by pseudo Image IPB and that was really that. Reenie detrapped the chest, rescued Endar, and looted the whole camp.

This was far too easy, but the party has been prepared with good items, and so no surprises here. I will not allow myself to feel over confident. Foreknowledge, preparation, farming xp and useful items AND potions is a must in a no-reload game, I will not pull my punches.

Off to Cloakwood to slay some evil druids, or maybe I will do some random adventuring in a few wilderness areas to loot some more xp and items.

We went through the Cloakwood killing everything in sight. Leaving the twitching bodies of many assorted creatures of which there were over 5 Sword spiders and 19 Wyverns. However. When we reached the Spider Lair, we were surprised to find a fat talking blob in the middle of the web. HJe somehow had control over the spiders and Ettercaps in this web. He threatened us and we attacked. I spawned my minions and had them take care of the spiders while Dynaheir used her brand new fourth Magic Missile on the Sword Spiders. They were slaughtered quickly and we took the Sword Spiders bane and sold it at the Friendly Arm Inn.

imageshack.us/photo/my-images/684/spiderlair2.png/
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/31/spiderlairend.png/

In the next stretch of the wood, we met a Druid named Faldorn. She turned out to be a shadow druid and was distressed as we slaughtered her brethren. She later pernamently died at the mine to a poisoned arrow.

The next map we went to had a Wyvern's lair. We attempted to kill them all but could only carry nineteen of their severed heads. Faldorn died for the second time.

We then took a trip to Naskel just because and found a man that was the "fastest dart thrower in the West"... We showed him to not think to highly of himself and then returned to the mine.

There, we ran into a group of well equipped guards who had two mages with them at the entrance to the mine. They put up a good fight but not good enough.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/entrancetomine.png/
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/515/entrancetomine2.png/

imageshack.us/photo/my-images/252/entrancetomine4.png/
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/864/entrancetomineend.png/

Nothing of import happened after that until we reached the second mine shaft. It seemed like we were suddenly inside a building as Faldorn died for the third and final time. We left her lying on the wooden floor and continued into the mine. We ran into a really stupid mage that had set an ambush for us and we destroyed his lair with a few well aimed fireballs. There we ran into another Fighter/Cleric by the name of Yeslick. We had some good plate mail kicking around and threw it on him. We went down into another shaft of the mine to find that we were ambushed AGAIN... We easily destroyed the forces around the door and then ran up to clean out what looked like the barracks.

After that, I found an Ogre Mage after doing some exploring. I fought the Ogre mage with my beautiful Warhammer of Lightening and only lost half of my health in the process.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/821/soloedogremage.png/

<--Back to third person-->

I next went after Davaeorn. I disarmed the traps with Safana and forgot to take the boots of speed off of Shar-Teel. I sent my three tanks in and Davaeorn ranted for a bit and then disappeared... Then he was everywhere. we sat in the middle and finally, he stopped casting holes in our dimension.  He held me and Shar-Teel was Dire Charmed. A woman that hates men with boots of speed and a Long Sword Plus 2. YAH. Not someone you want on your bad side heh heh. I nearly ragequitted when he summoned Ogrillons to kill my party. They killed Yeslick and Shar-Teel chased Minsk. There were no healers available in the party when Shar-Teel attacked Harris. She hit him several times and finally he wasn't held anymore. Good thing I had 5 Potions and 5 Elixirs of Health on Harris. Shar-Teel chased Harris into the entrance rooms and while this was happenning, Minsc helped Dynaheir and Safana finish off the Ogrillons and Davaeorn.

About the Ankeg Map: Turns out there was a thumbprint on CD 4. Right on top of where the game read the Ankeg masp from.

 Bad day... =(

Rested at FAI but came upon a group of holy warriors, accusing Reenie of being a murderer of innocents and that justice will be swift and final. (Dark Horizons mod again, the mod really wants to see player dead)

Khalid rushed to melee the lady knight in her impressive armor. The cleric lass casted a greater command spell which dropped Viccy Jaheira and Kivan. BAD start. but it only got worse.  Image IPB

These guys had amazing ACs and are impossible to hit, so Reenie could not disrupt the cleric's spell, and this happened:  Image IPB NOOOOOO!!!

Enraged, Reenie casted all of her offensive spells on the cleric. Grease, minor globe of darkness and magic missiles. But it was too late, the damage was done. If only Reenie thought about casting them before to disrupt the cleric!  Image IPB Reenie killed the cleric lass. Punishment for slaying such a noble creature as her familiar.  Image IPB

FAI guards even rushed to our aid against the lady knight, who was invincible. Khalid was able to hit only with criticals, and she resisted Viccy's hold persons and command spells. But she fell to the last one. Viccy has sealed her fate with her last command spell.  Image IPB

They had amazing items, an +5 small shield usable by good aligned, and a +2 CON helmet. Yep they were actually good aligned guys, but misled and so self righteous that they did not listen to words.

Oh yes...Reenie lost her familiar. The thing was charred black. (chunky fire death) if it had saved vs flame strike, it would be alive, then again save vs breath at -4 is a very difficult save to make. (thanks, spell revisions!)  Sleep now, noble creature, many an evil mage has fallen under your claws.. Image IPB Yes Jaheira's comment that this is a good place for a henge, is priceless. =p

This sucks! I should have been more careful. Reenie should have casted her spells instead of trying to hit the cleric. Pfaugh!

They are indeed difficult to hit in melee. I think you've already worked out that the easiest way to take them out is to initially use damaging spells / items on the cleric. The other one has no distance capability so you can run them round as long as needed to fill them with missiles.

Gael has made fair progress, though hasn't started on the main quest yet.

There was a nice start in Candlekeep as gems were generated with only the second wild surge.  After heading to Beregost to get Algernon's cloak Gael has started picking off people with worthwhile equipment.  Examples (there were others) include Neira, Greywolf, Silke, Xzar & Montaron, an ogre with a belt, Tarnesh (all his spells used against hobgoblins in this screenshot), Jaheira (tragically killed in a marital squabble), Unshey, the main players on Zal's map (though the boy/ogre mage was immune to damage - at least from non-magic weapons - and survived), the main players on Caldo's map and Bassilus.

Up to the encounter with Caldo and co. Gael still had 0 XP, but somehow got 200 XP there - possibly that's provided just for talking with Ingot or something like that.  Since then he got 150 when talking to the merchant afraid of the bear (by mistake) and 1,000 for returning Bassilus's symbol (couldn't resist the 5,000 gold).  Also picked up another 50 for killing a xvart and a gnoll by accident.

He's got the amulet of shielding, though that's not been needed yet (main benefit is to hugely increase the chances of surviving a bandit ambush, but none have occurred yet).  Also got wand of sleep to reduce the amount of work required to get through the Nashkel mines and 3 invisibility scrolls.  Not sure where best to use these at the moment, although might use 2 to take on either the pirate cave or ankheg tunnels.  Part of the purpose of gathering funds at the moment is to go to Ulgoth's Beard and acquire invisibility ring as well as ring of free action and green amulet.

Hi all, I tried this some months back and failed miserably and repeatedly. I have, however, been lurking in the thread since then and felt like trying my hand at this again. So, enter Chigurh the Quick, Chaotic Neutral, Half-elf, Bard:

Image IPB

The basic plan goes like this:

Solo until 5 then get the band together. I feel like doing a three piece so the group will consist of Kagain, Viconia and Chigurh. Then we'll grind, quest and other wise occupy ourselves until Chigurh reaches level 6. At that point he'll solo the Nashkel Mines (I think it's easier that way). After that we'll get the band back together then (hopefully) proceed through the rest of the game.

This is how it's gone so far:

Image IPB

Chigurh began with a horrible roll for money. He started with 30 gold which meant that even after doing all of the quests he didn't have enough to buy any significant equipment. He resorted to stealing a bow from Wintrhop which went well. Unfortunately, I forgot to swith the menus back to purchase some arrows which forced Chigurh to attempt another theft instead of a purchase. Winthrop was not to be fooled twice. Chigurh was pissed. SO was Winthrop.

Thus, Chigurh set out into the world with a bow with no arrows and no armor.

Image IPB

Given his state, he bee-lined to Beregost. In particular, he took great care to avoid Kobold McCrit-ty who has senselessly ended so many no-reloads. Between his insights into human behavior gained from conversing with Marl and helping an Firebeard, level 2 was attained.

Off to FAI...

Image IPB

An ogre was dispatched on the way to FAI.

All things distrust in Faerun but these,
The dumbness of ogres and the cover of trees.

~Chigurh the Quick

Image IPB

Again, stupid me, clicks the wrong dialog options and misses out on the Joia XP. Pictured here is the ever-annoyed-with-me-Chigurh. He now wears the ring very blatantly to remind to read the dialog options caregully and beware of the trackpad before clicking.

Image IPB

Selling the Ring of Wizardry gets us properly equipped. The Wand of Sleep is an essential part of my early game strategy. Here, retrieving Perdue's sword.

Soon after a Black Bear is killed and level 3 is reached. I forgot to mention our AWFUL hit point rolls thus far. We didn't even break 20 until level 4. UGH!!!

Image IPB

Seen here retrieving the chicken, Melicamp. He did not survive the chickenator. Seriously, does this ever work on the first try?

Image IPB

Next on the to-do list was Karlat. This took two tries, i.e., I had to go buy more arrows. After the first attempt I made the decision that, if ever in a no-reload game I am thinking to myself 'Eh, it'll be ok.', STOP and go get prepared the way I know how. He was blind so slipping out was easy. I came back 16 hours later (rested) and one-shot him. I was wonder if that wonderful dwarven regeneration applied to NPCs. Now Karlat and I both know, no, it doesn't.

Image IPB

Next I retrieved Zhurlong's boots then promptly executed him for taking my ****. Don't touch my ****.

Image IPB

Next was Neira. Pictured here is an example of one of the moments Chigurh and I get very irritated with BG game mechanics.

Image IPB

Then, attempting to save a little girl's cat. That's Chaotic Neutral for ya.

Image IPB

Half ogres are no match for the Wand of Sleep and Blindness.

Image IPB

Returning Landarin's things (and killing Tarnesh on the way) completed level 4 for us.

At this point we decided to pick up a couple of things for the group before actually going to collect the evil band of merriment and mayhem:

Image IPB

Gauntlets of Dexterity for Kagain. (The boy needs'em for real)

Image IPB

And the Bracers of Archery for Chigurh.

After that it was a quick stop in Beregost for Kagain then to Pedvale for Viconia. By this point we need but 1400 or so xp to get Chigurh to 6. We decided to show V and K how we handled our business and let them watch as we executed Greywolf:

Image IPB

Level 6!

To Nashkel!

(I now cross my fingers that this post actually displays correctly...)

Note: In the first picture you can see that I saved incase i did die but I'm happy I didn't! Still haven't died yet but have done things that I should have died at. Gorpel Hind next?

Oh. Turns out that I feared Thaldorn. Shar-Teel one shotted him.

Dwarves don't regenerate as such, they just find it easier to get to constitution 20  (which is the starting point for regeneration).  Best of luck in your travels.

Gael no.2 has unfortunately also just succumbed to a slightly dodgy fate.  Having worked up to Ulgoth's Beard with around 40,000 gold to spend he tried using Dushai's aerial servant to kill his master along with the other gnome and the dwarf seeking the dagger from Durlag's Tower.  When Dushai attacked the servant with his fists I expected the servant to turn hostile and retaliate.  He did indeed retaliate, but for some reason he did not turn hostile.

That meant that Dushai went hostile instead.  He ignored all the other enemies in favour of an immediate launch of a double melf's acid arrow sequencer at Gael.  Gael didn't have time to get off the map, but survived the initial round by taking a healing potion between the two spell impacts.
Image IPB

He succumbed on the next round - I realised too late that I could have actually saved him.  I had a scroll of magic protection, but there would not have been time to use it initially so didn't try.  However, it would have been possible (checked with the autosave) to use it at the point of the screenshot - it would have taken effect just before the next lot of damage from the acid arrows and cancelled them.

I think I'll have one more attempt at this.

Death and despair at Cloakwood, AKA:The Dark Forest of Untold Horrors and Utterly Horrible Deaths!

Seriously. I never imagined this area to be THIS tough!

First area was easy enough, looted the cloak of non-detection, it gives a spiffy blue-protection-aura thingy to Reenie, ignored Coran and went to spider area. Reenie found and detrapped webs, Khalid tanked numerous giant spiders, sword spiders, and ettercaps. By the way, doesn't ettercap sound kinda cute? I picture a fluffy, cute little thing when I hear ettercap, not those hairy horrible poisonous little bruties.

Got the quest to kill a baby dragon by a druiddes, and done so:    the thing is easy really, only its breath attack did some damage. Image IPB

Entered spider lair, and everything went wrong. Chenteol was neutralised immediately by Viccy, Image IPB and killed by ranged attacks and Reenie's fireball. But the spiders..oh the god damn ugly yucky spiders!!!

You see, SCS grants Giant Spiders a web attack that holds the target for quite a few rounds. And they go directly to bite and poison the webbed hapless targets, ignoring EVERYthing else. I guess it's natural for spiders. Well. The web held Khalid, Jaheira, and Viconia, Kivan was spared cos he had ranger boots which grant freedom of movement. The spiders and ettercaps all jumped in and killed Jaheira.  Image IPB  then Viconia was poisoned and quickly killed. Image IPB the poison was hurting Khalid too, but bless his soul, he was able to get out of the web.  Then somewhere along the lines Imoen was webbed&killed quickly too!

Reenie saw one spider throwing its web. And just gulped a potion of invisibility as it hit and held her. With 2 sword spiders on her tail. If she was not invisible. She would be ripped apart. Literally. Sword spiders lack poison but have so many attacks per round. Reenie was saved!  Image IPB  and our tough fighters Khalid and Kivan managed to kill the spiders. Reenie was still webbed. Sigh.

Stuffed people's stuff and body into bag of holding, and off to FAI to revive the fallen. Image IPB Funny that NPCs tend to speak among themselves immediately when raised from dead. Gee.

On our way back to thrice-damned forest, we were ambushed, by spiders and wyverns, but were able to do OK. Nobody died, Yay! Image IPB Immy had the gnomish boots which grant immunity to grease and web. They were sitting in my bag of holding. Aaaagh! They could have saved quite a few lives!

So the next area. I thought the worst was over.

Boy, how I was wrong.

We were attacked by a witch named Miranda. and her cohorts, a bear, a few druids and a most fearsome and vicious squirrel. The cohorts were laughable. Miranda was not. She had high AC and magic resistance, ignoring our disabling spells, and casting spells non-stop. Uninterruptable, scripted, infinite spells. She casted contagion over and over on Khalid and Jaheira. And the call lightnings, standart druid stuff. Image IPB When she was injured, she casted cure mortal wounds (uninterruptable, scripted, infinite spells) and was back to uninjured. And then more contagions. I healed Jaheira and Khalid each time they were diseased by elixirs of health, but we had only so many.  Kivan charmed the bear and it helped. A bit. Image IPB

We used all our spells, Viccy raised undead, Imoen and Reenie charmed the druids and used their call lightnings on the witch, to no avail, while she kept happily giving diseases and boils to Khalid, electrifying him with lightningings, and healing herself. Image IPB Poor Khalid. He got sick quite a few times and was electrocuted repeatedly, he gulped many healing potions.

Now I am a stubborn git, being a taurus sign and all, with STR and heroism potions and luck I managed to injure her to Badly Wounded but she casted cure mortal wounds and was back to slightly injured. Again. And then gave Khalid another disease.  Oh and killed him outright thanks to one of his stats reaching zero, I think.  Image IPB

At this point I said something rather unsavory, picked up his inventory and as a skeleton sacrificed itself to delay Miranda, we fled. On our way to FAI we were ambushed yet again and Viconia was held by a web at the start of combat and was killed. I was laughing with a manic glee at this point. Image IPB

Back to FAI, raised Khalid and Viccy. Image IPB Funny Viconia threatening Kivan, when she has just woken up with 1 HP.  I wonder will they ever come to blows, like Edwin&Minsc and Keldorn&Viconia in BG2?

OK, I guess the Cloakwood is..kinda rough for now, I am ashamed but it seems I need to do some more random adventuring. Maybe go to Secret of the Bonehill areas, they are relatively easy and have nice items. I don't want to return that forest of HORRORs soon. Any suggestions are welcome.

Well, I think it is time to help Gorpel Hind and then go to Candlekeep after killing the Mauler Mountain guys.
The Party of Harris formed up along the left side of the Helm and Cloak Inn. safana talked to Gorpel Hind and some ugly louts ran in. Dynaheir in fright, cast a web spell and it turned out none of them had good resistances. Minsc walked up and talked to their leader and sure enough, a fight began.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/341/gorpelhind.png/
The fight was over quickly as the rude louts turned out to be no match to the might and magic of Harris's party.
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/402/gorpelhind2.png/
imageshack.us/photo/my-images/690/gorpelhindend.png/
The innkeeper, waiter, and cook all survived.

I next healed my party,  slept at the inn, went next door and faced a hellish group of soldiers led by an evil mage that wanted my helm and cloak. they proved to be a good fight as they killed Safana and Yeslick while nearly killing the rest of the party.((Minsc was at 2 HP, Harris was at 10 HP sort of thing))
I then went to Candlekeep.

@Silver-star those giant spiders can be a bit of a menace can't they! With a party a round of fireballs immediately on entry (spell, wand, necklace, potions) from everyone can make the situation more manageable.

In relation to Miranda your screenshots show that your party is not buffed. Putting on things like haste, bless, chant will help a lot. You might also consider using a few potions, such as heroism and giant strength. I would also suggest adding to your army using Algernon's cloak before taking her on. A few bears to help tank her (also buffed) would work wonders.

@Grond0 those spiders are horrible! Kudos to SCS for making giant spiders really scary monsters. They give me the creeps, really.

I was not expecting Miranda fight and was caught unaware, true. We do not have haste spell. And no Algernon cloak. (it is nerfed in my game, anyway)  No decent summoning spells except skeletons. Jaheira's summon animal I may be useful though I did not try it. In my game Jaheira has lvl 3 stoneskin spell so her slots are filled with it.  And Kivan misses even with a roll of 16+2=18 miss in one screen shot so Miranda has insane AC. And has resisted every spell, so only way is quickly cutting her to ribbons. But she has infinite spells. Infinite healing spells. And uniterruptable as well. I even used cloud giant STR potion on Khalid, but item revisions change it to last only 1 turn, and also Miranda repeatedly diseased Khalid, sapping his STR. So that was not effective at all.

I plan to do some more adventuring, one or two level ups, new spells, and items may help. Reenie and Imoen had a very bad luck at scribing spells to their books. -_- Secret of Bonehill has very nice items and spells too, I may go there.

Sorry to see your wild mage being killed again.

@Chaseroy Oi! A bard! They are easy to solo in BG1, or so I have heard. Good luck!

@Gem Hound seems I can't catch up with you at all, can't even pass Cloakwood areas. Heh.

Hard luck Grond0. Image IPB  It is actually easier to get Greywolf killed by the guards at the mine. You don't have to do any charming and there is no XP involved. You have to ensure that he can always see you though, otherwise he attacks the guards and kills them.

Doing the improved Ulcaster Dungeon's lvl 2. (Dark Horizons mod) there are powerful enemies, lots of XP and awesome items here, going slow and steady, killed the few ghost arch-mages there. I will post screenshots later.

One skeleton warrior dropped a scroll of summon fiend. I may be tempted to drop the fiend on top of Miranda the witch and run or it! =D

Have fun Silver. I'm running around killing Dopplegangers for fun right now with my leader and his warhammer... They are too easy.

By the way: This is my first attempt at a no-reload game.
