@Grondo, that's very insightful re dwarven regen. I guess I just assumed it was all dwarves since the only one I've really used is Kagain.

@Silverstar, SCS Cloakwood looks very interesting. I play vanilla BG but I might give SCS a shot soon.

The continued adventures of Chigurh...

Image IPB

Mulahey died.

Image IPB

Nimbul died.

Image IPB

Tranzig died.

The Bandit Camp was cleared. Mutamin went down.

Image IPB

The party outside of Cloakwood: dead.

Image IPB

Davaeorn: dead. He managed to get a through-the-wall-cheeseball lightening bolt off on Vic.

We then headed to BG. And cleared the Dopplegangers from the Seven Seas.

Image IPB

I can't believe I was actually worried about these chumps. This fight wasn't as clean as I would have liked, however. Chigurh kept having LOS issues with the columns and as a result spent half the fight down in the Stinking Cloud. It was fine in the end, though.

THEN.

Sadness.

We headed to Candlekeep and soon found ourselves in the catacombs beneath the library. I had been debating since last night whether I wanted to go after the tomes or just keep moving through the game. Bear in mind that I don't have any means of disarming traps. I do, however, know where most of them are. I decided to just go for it.

Stupid decision.

We used brute force disarming by way of sending Kagain ahead to trigger them all then come back for heals. This worked fine for the first two tombs. But then I learned a lesson I will never forget:

Image IPB

I guess the lightening trap (traps?) in this area continue to fire until disarmed. First Kagain went down. That hurt but I felt confident I could make it out of the catacombs without him. I grabbed his stuff and then BAM! Lightening bolts were everywhere and Chigurh was down in seconds.

Bummer.

All in all, I feel good about the run. It was far and away the furthest I have made it into a no-reload run. I'm mainly just disappointed that I lost trying to get those stupid tomes. They really weren't important as I probably never would have taken this character to BG2 (I've yet to actually play that game) However, I have that RPG-nerd, completionist streak that compels me to go where the loot is. Argh.

Oh well.

Chaseroy - sorry about your demise. Just so you know, it IS possible to hug the wall to avoid the trap completely, and still get your tomes. I've done this a number of times in my parties without thieves. It's tricky, but possible. Of course, protection from lightning scroll, potions of absorption, or protection from lightning (divine spell, 4th level) would also be viable alternatives.

But learning that the trap is a repeating forever type trap is handy you to learn for future runs.

You are right about this, indeed. I'm a little annoyed at myself for having not taken note of this when I soloed a bard through there last week. It was not a no reload run, however, which is probably the reason. I've observed that I take not eof every little detail when life (relatively speaking) is on the line.

Thank you for your condolences and advice.

Well, I went through Candlekeep, the catacombs((got my awesome books)), killed those four guys, got smuggled into Baldur's Gate, got caught by the guard and turns out that Shar-Teel is Angelo's daughter... At leasyt that is the only explanation... How about that. This is my first time using Shar-Teel.

I reentered, stormed the Flaming Fist barracks, and saved Duke Eltan with angelo watching as a friendly.

Dwarves don't regenerate as such, they just find it easier to get to constitution 20  (which is the starting point for regeneration).  Best of luck in your travels.

I had hoped to take advantage of this with a Dwarven Fighter/Mage, who would collect the Con tome early on with Invisibility and then proceed through the game with regeneration. Snazzy. The only problem is that Dwarves can't be Mages. Could work as a Cleric, say, but not sure it's worth the effort.

As most of my solo characters can't disarm traps the catacombs are a favourite place to use a protection from magic scroll.  Works well against both lightning and the nasty fire traps on the strength tome.  If you feel up to the challenge it can also come in handy if you move swiftly on to battle the party while the protection is still going.

Is it not possible to use shadowkeeper for that?  Or, if you are keen on non-standard builds, one of the options in ToBEX is to remove all racial restrictions on class.

Ouch. The pyromaniacs killed me right before I reached Sarevok... *pulls out hair* Well, at least I can kill Sarevok several different ways now with the beautiful magic items my party has.

Consolations, Gem hound. Those "pyromaniacs" only have a few arrows of detonation. If you send a person with high fire resistance to greet them and take a few hits then can then lure the enemies to your party - your party could be waiting with summons and such, then once those arrows of detonation are expended, you should be able to defeat the enemies.

They give some XP though and that could possibly be of little use when your mage is close to leveling up. Dynaheir level up after I defeated them and I killed Sarevok's group with Cloudkill spells.

Anyways, I'm starting an Elven Thief to throw something random in there.

@Chaseroy SCS adds some nasty scripts and web ability to spiders in Cloakwood. Druids and dragon encounters are courtesy of Dark Horizons mod, which is compatible with vanilla BG IIRC. SCS requires TuTu or BGT, however. Sorry about your bard, lightning traps are the worst!

@GemHound oh you were so close! Shame about that! Good luck on your thief, thieves are a lot of fun, backstabbing and stealthing and all.

Challenged the red wizards in East woods, these guys are exceedingly annoying and deadly thanks to SCS, so Khalid used a pro from magic scroll on himself. And all chaos and confusion and emotion spells of them were useless. Image IPB  Seeing this, they summoned a HORDE of monsters to overwhelm Khalid. That was very smart thinking of their part, but Khalid has awesome AC to tank critters and Reenie came to help with a fireball, since Khalid was immune.  Image IPB The mages immediately spotted Reenie and the two of them casted lightning bolts at the same time on Reenie. First lightning bolt did 28 damage even though Reenie made a save vs breath weapon. (spell revisions lightning bolt does 1d8/lvl damage and save vs breath at -2 for half) so she gulped a pro from magic potion before the second lightning reached her. That was annoying, but the mages died later.

Went to Ulcaster, dozens of kobolds spawned but Reenie cleared them all with fireballs,  we fought Ichyard and Khalid took a beating and got morale failure:berserk but the undead monster was killed. Image IPB

Inside Ulcaster dungeon, I did not want to challenge the Ulcaster wolf and lesser skeleton mage (SCS encounters, DEADLY) and went to second 'secret' level. These areas are copies of Candlekeep dungeons, from Dark Horizons mod, full of hig level mage ghosts and monsters and traps. And also XP and awesome loot.

Party was buffed up to the max with every potion I got before entering the level and the first mage was cut to ribbons fast enough. If you allow this ghost mage to cast his spells he lays waste to party.  Image IPB The loot was sweet, a poison dagger +2 for Reenie which grants +1 attack/round. Awesome!

There were some burning dead archers, waiting with exploding arrows, but Reenie stealthed to them and backstabbed their spines, which forced them to go melee and they are laughable at melee. We looted a lot of exploding arrows for Kivan thanks to them.  Image IPB

Reenie went in stealth and came upon another ghost mage, accompanied by a Skeleton Warrior AND Death Knight. Wow! And then Reenie triggered a trap but saved vs spells. It was probably a confusion trap and if Reenie had failed her save she would be killed by the unholy trio.  Image IPB

Anyway, being the good thief Reenie went to backstab the ghost mage, spectacularly failed and gulped her invisibility potion instantly. Image IPB But this really annoyed the ghost mage, who started walking and wandering about, looking for victims. He wandered away and Reenie used her bow to attract the other two and lured them to party. They were so tough, but Reenie did a backstab on Death Knight and Khalid&Jaheira tanked while we did ranged damage. Image IPB They fell, and Skeleton Warrior dropped a summon fiend scroll for random loot. That can come in handy. Or end up killing us all. We'll see.

Down the corridors, destroying many ghouls, we came upon the wandering ghost mage and quickly dispatched it.  Khalid tanks with pro from magic potion and party goes ranged-crazy with powerful magical ammos. Image IPB

Imoen leveled up to mage 7 when we killed a stray helmed horror, and got her thief abilities back! That was important as Reenie is not good at open locks. Imoen is not good at finding traps. The two compliment each other. We will go to next level, the same as Candlekeep catacombs and there are locked and heavily trapped and guarded treasures there. Wish us luck! =)

The lesser skeleton mage isn't SCS, actually (though plausibly it uses SCS scripting).

Oops, my bad. Hard Times add it IIRC. But there is no real treasure for risking it. The down level is awesome though, tough foes but doable. But one lightning trap left Reenie with 3 HP. Lightning traps are SOO treacherous! We looted two tomes and many magical treasures, I will show them later when I identify them back at a town =)

Well, I didn't really want to make an illegal PC. I might still do it at some point; I don't think it would exactly be overpowered or anything.

I love that option in ToB_ex. Its nice for a change to be able to roll a halfling F/M/T, or a dwarven F/M/C, or a gnomish sorcerer, etc. From a role-playing perspective, there  are bound to be some "non-standard" or highly unconventional characters  in the world...especially, if that character is a Bhaalspawn.

I also like the ToB_ex options that give everyone 4 weapon slots and allow armor switching in combat. As a result, all of my installs now start with ToB_ex.

Out of curiosity, how all those *extra* weapon slots fits in say 800*600 resolution for cleric/thief char for example? In vanilla (TuTu) even with two weapon slots the *open locks* button doesn't fits on main screen and moved onto the *second row*:

Image IPB Image IPB

I think, with 4 weapon slots even more thiefs (or cleric) buttons will move onto the *second raw* and I personally find it quite annoying to jump there every now and then...

The 4 slots are visible in the inventory screen, but there are no changes in the quick slots. That means that you need to go into the inventory if you want to change weapons in slots 3 and 4 for something like a mage, but I agree with angiras108 that it's still a worthwhile change.

Oh, I see. Well, if I need to go into the inventory to change weapons in those additional slots then it's only an *extra* inventory slots (even if specifically for weapons) in my point of view, no more...

I don't know how they can be overpowered, but certainly a very solid class. I'm glad Bioware gave us a NPC with that class -- would have loved a Bioware NPC that was a F/M but oh well...(and to forestall replies, yes I know there's a mod out there that makes Khalid a F/M, but I mean the dialog too for a F/M not just the class itself).

It's a bit more.  You would need to go into inventory to change from slot 1 to slot 3, but not when changing back to slot 1Image IPB.

Really? What Bioware NPC is a fighter/mage/thief in BG1? I must have missed that NPC -- you sure it's not a result of a mod?
