Melrus met his end against Mulahey (blocked, held, chopped).

So enters Voral, LG human male cavalier.
BGT, fixpack core fixes, Ascension, generalised biffing.

A potion of freedom was used to nullify Bassilus.
Two blue potions of healing were used against Greywolf.
A second potion of freedom was used against Kirian.
Two tomes (charisma, constitution) have also been consumed.

Time to deal with Nashkel mine.

Image IPB

Image IPB

A charge of the necklace helps with Mulahey.

Nimbul manages one volley of magic missiles before his luck runs out. Tranzig manages a Melf.
Ardenor Crush falls easily.
Taugosz Khosann and his bandits force two healing abilities and lay on hands.

A rest and a second necklace charge is enough for Venkt, but he has landed two Melfs.
Hakt, Raemon and Britik are no problem.

Boots (grounding) help against Seniyad and his druids.
A third potion of freedom deals with spider and ettercap traps.
Spiders Bane sword is retrieved from Centeol.

Cavalier charm immunity is fatal to a hamadryad.
Cavalier poison immunity is fatal to a family of wyverns.

Ready Cloakwood mine, THACO 5 and 3APR.
Image IPB

Rezdan is chunked before he can cast a spell.
Drasus is injured.
Kysus re-appears so I hit him twice before he can cast a spell.
Drasus and Genthore expire, and I am unscathed.

Boots (speed) zip me through a series of guards uninjured.
PfE helps against Hareishan, 73/84hp with the room cleared.
The next level is entirely one-sided so I descend to the final level.
No battle horrors (?) so I kill the final guard and Davaeorn.

Next, the city of Baldurs Gate.

The Gauntlet Series

The F/M/C had died, but her replacement is Jennifer the Fighter/Mage. All participants were successful in their bassilisk hunting ventures and some moved to vacation and watch Meilum and Kahrk duke it out on the world stage. Essentially I'm playing multiple games in a kind of "turned based" style chapter by chapter. I'm not sure whether it makes it easier or more difficult but it is certainly much more grueling and exhaustive. A change of pace at best.

Some pictures of the randomized party

This thief was a really lucky "roll"

Image IPB

Moving onwards

Image IPB

Random Party battles Mulahey
There were no silly charm tricks in this fight. Namely because the wizard was too lazy to attempt to scribe the charm spell. A clean brute force fight was on display. The random party had recently defeated Bassilus by brute force as well so this was no cause of surprise. Mulahey was commanded and the arrows and bullets fell upon him. He did manage to hold the ranger of the party but Kalembunt(the main guy) stood behind her and used all his healing magic to allow her to take hits. Mulahey even had the opportunity to beg for his life. The party said "No way we want your stuff!" After he was put down, his minions were a bit more of a hassle but it really made no difference. The Random Party successfully made it to the next chapter.

Image IPB

Baylen the Dwarven Fighter takes on Mulahey
At level six, Baylen faced no resistance in the Nashkel Mines. He had taken a detour to obtain the Greenstone Amulet, which took virtually all his gold. As with the Random Party, there were no tricks in this fight. Baylen destroyed Mulahey purely on his power. He took the precaution of buffing with the amulet and then let it rip. Mulahey and his minions didn't stand much of a chance. Upon coming back to Nashkel, Baylen's confidence was soaring, only to be met with a near death experience with Nimbul. Nimbul seemed to have an endless supply of magic missiles. Nimbul chased Baylen right out of Nashkel with very low health. Baylen had to come back, but in retrospect, hunting down Bassilus may have been the more adequate move so that he may have been able to purchase something to avoid the dangerous spells of Nimbul. However Baylen stubbornly spent at least a thousand gold on healing potions and healing from the Nashkel temple. Nimbul didn't really care if Baylen ran away to the local temple. Perhaps Nimbul was of such faith. Eventually the war of attrition let Baylen to victory.

Jennifer takes on Bassilus
In a slight detour from the Nashkel Mines, Jennifer decides to get some gold first to buy the proper equipment. She taunts Bassilus into destroying his own minions, and she tossed of oil of flames at him to interrupt his spell casting. Charges from the necklace of missiles were used to disrupt his spellcasting further, and then kill him.

Image IPB

Jennifer versus Mulahey
Jennifer buffs with mirror image and then goes into Mulahey's command center. She kills the attacking kobolds and sends a skull trap at Mulahey. This takes out more kobolds and interrupts Mulahey's spell casting. She casts invisibility upon herself once Mulahey panics and then sends a charge from the necklace of missiles at Mulahey and the skeletons once she gathers herself. Mulahey is slain and his skeletal minions fall shortly afterwards.

Jennifer takes Nimbul
After purchasing the horn of kazgaroth, Jennifer decides to take a stroll around Nashkel. Nimbul confronts her, and with her mirror image and horn charge buffed and ready, she sends magic missiles at Nimbul first to rid herself of a few mirror images. Nimbul's horror splashes harmlessly against the horn charge as Jennifer casts blindness on Nimbul. Blindness works on Nimbul as he manages to get off a magic missile against Jennifer wiping out her remaining mirror images, causing her to retreat and fling arrows at him, alongside what seems to be the entire Nashkel guard. One more casting of magic missiles takes Nimbul out.

Renalty takes on the cleric Bassilus
After the vacation session with Meilum and Kahrk, Renalty was a proud benefactor of several nice spoils, including a Laeral Necklace and a lightning bolt scroll, which can make up for the fact that he can't use skull trap.
The fight with Bassilus turned out to be a gamble of sorts. While it would have been more useful just to use the necklace of missiles to interrupt Bassilus spellcasting, Renalty opted to gamble instead. Once Bassilus disposed of his minions, Renalty used the wand of frost to stop the first spell from Bassilus. But the next move Renalty made was a risk, and it was to cast blindness on Bassilus. Bassilus next spell of course was basically the same thing(hold person) and it was a case of who could get their spell off first. Blindness got off first being a level one spell, and it hit Bassilus, and that was the end of that.
http://i61.photobuck...nistmulahey.jpg

Renalty battles Mulahey
In this fight, as with the fight with Bassilus, there was a clear element of risk involved. Renalty had mirror image buffed, but nothing else. Mulahey cast rigid thinking on Renalty and despite Renalty sending a charge of the wand of frost at Bassilus, this did not interrupt the spell casting. Thankfully however, Renalty saved against the rigid thinking spell and started casting magic missile at Bassilus as well as a charge from the necklace of missiles to finish off the minions. He moves forward.

Kaela and Bassilus
The fight was not that exciting. After Bassilus deals with his own minions, Kaela and her minions get the jump on him. After being commanded twice by Kaela, Bassilus has no way to survive.

http://i61.photobuck...htermulahey.jpg

Kaela and Mulahey
While Kaela's minions distracted Mulahey, she was able to command him and kill him. Afterwards, his minions soon fell and Kaela was able to move forward.

Rachel takes Bassilus
The half-elf bard wasn't so certain that she could defeat Bassilus. This time around, Bassilus did not get angry and kill his own minions. But the necklace of missiles cared not, for the minions of Bassilus were simply collatoral damage. Chromatic orb did not disrupt Bassilus and his spell casting so Rachel simply moved out of range. Bassilus was soon cooked in a grill.

http://i61.photobuck...bardmulahey.jpg
Confrontation in Mines
The half-elf bard took on Mulahey, using an oil of fiery burning as well as a charge from the necklace of missiles to render Mulahey beserk. Coincidently, this destroyed most of his minions, though the bard needed to pick off a few when she was done with Mulahey, but essentially she was doing clean up.

So all the Gauntlet participants have made it past Chapter 2 with the sole exception of the fighter/cleric/mage I had been running who had been slain by the trio in the area east of Firewine Bridge where she was to vacation at the lovely Meilum and Kahrk battle resort.

Hopefully not too confusing

Voral, LG human male cavalier.

A dexterity tome is consumed.
Aldeth Sashenstar hands over his sword.
I grab the helm of Balduran.
Varci Roaringhorn hands over a magical shield.
A dryad is freed from Ragefast, netting me 90k gold for a woven cloak.
Marek gets iced and sliced, then a wisdom tome is consumed.
Ramazith yields a ring (protection +2) and tome of intelligence.

Nominal 161k xp cap reached so no more levelling up.
Image IPB

Gorf is tough, forcing hit and run attacks after healing runs out.
Schlumpsha and his sewer folk are easy pickings.
Ratchild and minions are a similar story.
Confusion helps an ogre mage and carrion crawlers but they still die.

Iron Throne HQ
Potions of fire protection, stone giant strength and speed, then PfE and a third use of the necklace. Naaman first, then Alai. Aasim and Diyab. The doppelganger and Zhalimar Cloudewulfe. Finally Gardush, finishing uninjured.

Eltan hands me a book to take to Candlekeep, but I add potions of mirrored eyes and cloud giant strength to my inventory too.

Candlekeep
I'm innocent, and Tethtoril frees me. I glug cloud giant, fire resistance, absorbtion and speed potions. Then I raid the catacombs and kill some doppelgangers. A potion of regeneration, PfE and a twist of the necklace shreds Prat and his gang.

Two more tomes (strength, wisdom) are identified and consumed.
DUHM and PfE overwhelms Cythandria.
A potion of invisibility and speedy retreat saves Duke Eltan.
DUHM and PfE is too much for Slythe too. Krystin is in for a long wait.

After a brief rest I glug potions of mind focusing, frost giant strength, heroism and speed. Adding PfE and DUHM I crash the coronation and kill the greater doppelgangers. Sarevok lays into me so I retreat until he leaves, then Belt and Liia (both survived) send me
to the thieves HQ.

Or I could have a brief interlude.

Scholars Island

A few buffs to tackle the ship. Level 1.

Level 2 requires a potion of regeneration.

A potion of invulnerability and PfE are used for level 3. Then switching to a 1 handed sword (Kondar) and shield, adding PfE, DUHM and a final twist of the greenstone amulet.
Image IPB

Time to leave.

One more for the road.

Sarevok next.

Voral, LG human male cavalier.

Preparation for the thieves maze through to Sarevok.
Image IPB

Frost giant strength, PfE and DUHM drops two doom guards and two skeleton warriors.

A rest, Kondar & shield, two fire resistance rings, frost giant strength, heroism, speed, PfE and DUHM are selected for Rahvin and his gang. Shaldrissa is first, Wudei is flamed by Rahvin, then Gorf, Haseo, Rahvin and Carston.

Tamoko wastes a flame strike on me before Spiders Bane cleaves her. Her armour complements the two fire protection rings nicely.

A potion of genius enables a scroll of fire protection (intelligence 8). Sarevok is drawn out and Angelo follows. A potion of invisibility allows casual buffing.

Mind focusing, storm giant strength, absorbtion, heroism, invulnerability, power, speed. PfE then on to Semaj.

Angelo is hitting hard so I glug a potion of regeneration and kill him first. Back to Semaj, who dies quickly.

I cast DUHM but Sarevok is hasted and hits again, disrupting the spell. I glug another potion of invisibility and retreat to heal. Then I throw an axe at Tazok to gain his attention, finishing him with Spiders Bane but taking another substantial hit. I re-apply PfE and DUHM.

So do I, it's not quite one-sided.
Image IPB

I may have to step back. In a moment.
Image IPB

Another hit and I retreat and glug two blue potions. He hits me twice more so I retreat to glug my remaining potions. To the death, hopefully.
Image IPB

Where's he going now?
Image IPB

EDIT: Should have switched armour and rings before Tazok and Sarevok to improve AC by 1, and possibly switch to sword/shield for two more.

EDIT2: Went to get the golden pantaloons. Tarnesh was somewhat outclassed. Anyway, spoke to Belt and off to Amn now.

Bit late now, but Shield is a great level 1 spell that gives extra bonuses against missiles ... keeps on being useful into higher levels as it also blocks magic missiles.

I've been a big fan of Shield, but haven't had room to pick it up on any of my Sorcerors so far... I may have to re-think that.

BTW, Although I don't use the spell much myself, I believe that Blindness does actually work on undead, even though I originally thought that it wouldn't. Nearly a year ago, I and some other regulars like Gorthaur and Grond0 previously explored the issue on this very thread (page 22 & 23 I believe).

Good reading there, in particular the link to http://www.seankreyn...hillusions.html

I had been debating (in my head) whether or not Blindess should affect undead (the spell description is mute on the point, and as a reference the eSeries script won't cast it on undead), but I've been largely won over at this point: if Blindness doesn't affect undead, neither should any other illusion spell (like Mirror Image), something which the game engine clearly does not support.

I need to get back in the challenge saddle, just haven't figured out what sounds enjoyable to me.

@All
My Grim Face is placed on hold for a while as I drowned deep in Skyrim's wilderness. I thought I could run'em both at the same time but addiction is too strong... I'll be back in time. For now - best of luck and cold mind to all of challengers! =)

Yeah two solid rolls, and Catherine only needs the constitution book to get 15.

In a no-reload game, the long duration of Armour makes it a compelling choice. However, Shield is a strong alternative since it offers a better AC bonus than the former and, as noted, blocks MMs too. Since these are the primary L1 spell attack method of many mages, are in many situations more effective than high-level spells (magical damage, as much as anything) and burn through Mirror Images, that's a nice bonus. Mirror Image + Shield is a good combo.

After5CST wrote...

IIRC the description says something about it burning out whatever visual sensory units the target had, citing ghouls as an example, I believe. Not sure why it would affect skeletons - perhaps you could say that though they don't have their old eyes, they have magically-created eyes which are vulnerable to the spell.

How about... four man random stats (sub-rule of your choice) same-class (one step) no-reload poverty challenge with Hard Times and SCS?
Reduced party for tougher battles but without a soloer's high level advantage in the later game.
Random stats make it much tougher (best of X rolls or something if you prefer).
Same class makes it more interesting, one step would allow e.g. Mage, Fighter/Mage and Cleric/Mage so you're not bolted down, or at least a choice of kits.
No-reload, obviously.
Poverty, because I want to see people doing it, though not Extreme Poverty because that's limiting.
Hard Times (optionally Item Randomiser too) for item restrictions and Algernon's Cloak.
SCS because you did want a challenge.
Mix and match.

Almost lost my random party today due to a bandit ambush. About thirty bandits(!) appeared and I was really unprepared for it(I really should know better then to take the long way in the surrounding areas of FAI). The main character almost died, I will post details later soon. Good news is, this party is the last leg of Chapter 3. I'm beginning to question whether so many games is actually good.

New entry to the challenge:

Gator, H M Avenger

Actually, somewhere around Gator IV... I've lost count.  Other recently aborted attempts included an Inquisitor, M/T, Dwarf F/C, and Archer kit (Ranger).

I've never liked BG druids (IWD druids are a different story): they've seemed to be (at low- to mid-level) the class with the WORST spell selections available.  I've never even given Avengers a mild look in ten years... until a few days ago.  After a number of failures through either poor choices or dwindling interest, I finally in character creation went through and re-read the descriptions for every kit.

Three words stood out:  Web.  Sword Spider.  No idea if the SS form gets Free Action, but if it does the combination sounds like a lot of fun.  Blanket an enemy with a couple of web spells (after all, what decent spell does a druid get at 2, anyway?), transform, and then blast 'em with the forty bejillion attacks a Sword Spider gets while they're entangled and can't break free.

The first few attempts showed just how *@#)%$^ fragile the Avenger is out the door, even with a strong character roll.  I hit a low on the third attempt by being killed by a single kobold archer.  The archer for some reason locked on Gator III in the middle of the party.  Since regular leather armor provides ZERO AC bonus against missile weapons, and the bucker provides ZERO AC bonus against missile weapons, the kobold managed to strike twice against AC6 in his first round, ending the game before Immy/Khalid/Jaheria could manage to kill the thing.

So, we went with a new ultra-conservative tactic set (for me) until at least second level.  After leaving Candlekeep, Immy and Gator skimmed the edges of maps, picking up a diamond and then heading to Beregost to pacify Marl and help Firebead.  Working down map edges, they then worked their way to Nashkel with minimal fighting.  The idea was to pick up the Ankheg armor, and then head my way back up to FAI to try to pass Tarnesh and then pick up Khalid and Jaheira, so she could have decent armor.

However, to my great surprise, Gator could wear the Ankheg armor: something I completely did not expect (I though archers would be able to wear it, since it's not metal, but I was wrong on that account on a previous attempt).  Change of plan: Gator promptly marked the armor as "you can have this armor when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers".  Doing some "door dancing" at the Nashkel inn, he and Imoen managed to take down Neira, making it to L2.  The extra hit points, plus the much improved AC, have made the character playable.

Gator has just reached L4, and has cleared just the maps on the main road from the FAI to Nashkel, plus the Naskel carnival.  Current party is Jaheria / Khalid / Imoen (dual at 3 to mage).  They intend to start working towards the Gnoll stronghold next.

Wow. What spells are in your spellbook? I didn't think there were better spells.

Spell choices vary upon one's level and the encounters you expect to be taking on.

At level 1 (e.g. travelling to FAI or Beregost) you are very unlikely to encounter anything more than 4HD, and mostly gibberlings and xvarts at first, which means sleep is great. The ogre with the belts is 4+1 HD, so sleep will get him too.

Shield is also a good protective spell for an unarmoured mage (5 turn duration!). MM isn't as good at low levels because you must wait until level 3 to get 2 missiles, getting better at higher levels.

If playing Tutu, Spook is good as it forces a -1 on the save even for level 2 casters, getting better at higher levels, and completely disables an opponent (Blindness just restricts them). It works for only 3 rounds but this is usually long enough. It might allow a mage to make an escape and regroup when pressed by a powerful opponent at close range. Paniced enemies are usually easy to take out with ranged weapons.

Selina's spellbook (Priest of Talos (7) / Mage (8) with a Ring of Wizardy [2 x 1st level spells = 10 spells]) from the current Razor & Selina run currently includes:

Level 1
M: Magic Missile x 4, Shield x 2 (AC4, AC2 vs missiles! Mage no longer a target in SCS play)
Spook, Laroch's Minor Drain, Chromatic Orb, Sleep
C: Cure Light Wounds x 2, Bless , Command, Remove Fear, Doom

Level 2
M: Stinking cloud x 2 (works well in combo with skeletons),
Detect Invisibility, Meif's Acid Arrow, Blur
C: Hold Person x 2, Slow Poison, Silence, Chant, Barksin

Level 3
M: Fireball x 2, Haste, Invis. 10' Radius
C: Animate Dead x 2, Holy Smite, Glyph of Warding

Level 4
M: Stoneskin, MGoI, Fireshield Red
C: Prot Evil 10' Radius, Death Ward, Defensive Harmony

(BTW - I allow Evil clerics in my game including Viconia and Selina to cast Holy Smite ... as they are denied spells like 'Fear'
(reverse of Remove Fear, essentially a lv1 Horror spell) and good clerics are able to cast Animate Dead!

Evil should have no problem slamming Evil opponents with a Holy Smite - so long as they stand back! The same might not be true for Good using Unholy Blight on Good. In gameplay, Selina rarely casts it as Razor is also evil and often in the midst of it all. A Fireball usually works better.

Huntwen the Human Ranger entering Trilogy no-reload challenge

Huntwen the ranger will only group with other rangers (with the only exceptions being if a NPC is needed for a quest -- also possibly Imoen if we are only 5 rangers at that point and even then only until we get her to Athkatla). So he has 3 other bhaalspawn ranger friends, and will group with the 2 rangers in both BG 1 and BG 2.

Setup:
Easytutu
Beregost patch
Core Rules
"gore" on
No other mods

On to the introductions:
Huntwen:

Twoone
PinkHannasee (named created by my 5 year old daughter)

Not going to add SCS, need to do at least one run-through to see how being easy-tutu will change my previous strategies.

EasyTuTu by itself doesn't change much in a name of difficulty apart from enemies spawn groups and duration of some spells (mage's Strength in particular) whilst I found SCS quite interesting. But, it's your game - keep rockin' =)

some things I noticed so far:
1) it's much easier to waste your proficiency points in EasyTutu
2) Seems to be a bit more monsters on spawns
3) Encountered a 3 ogre ambush that surrounded me to boot - not sure that ever happened in vanilla BG 1
4) Damage dealing is increased somewhat now that front-liners can dual-wield
5) Run speed greater (yay for that, less time to finish my runs)

Not any experience against mages yet. Does EasyTutu put in any BG 2 only spells or do you have to install a mod for that?

You don't need any mods for that - they are present by default. And vanilla spells has changed in BG2 manner (i.e. Strength spell lasts only 1turn/level vs 9 hours in vanilla for example) and you are limited to 5 summons (so no hordes of skeletons now). But by installing Tutufix/*Remove spells that werent in BG1* component you can get rid of them if you wish so.

Here's my update

The Fighter/Cleric

Image IPB

Kaela takes on the Bandit Camp
Before engaging the Bandit Camp, Kaela picked up the Greenstone Amulet and took out a few bandits for gold. Upon entering the main tent, Kaela prepared an invisibility potion(got from the Bassilisk Area) and went invisible after the big speech by the Bandit leader(having already used a charge from the greenstone amulet, though she could've buffed this afterwards). She buffed Aid and DUHM and then set forth with animate dead. With two animate dead spells, Kaela was able to take out the bandit leaders. Although she had a potion of absorption, she decided to simply leave the area and buy a green scroll of protection of lightning, and a insulation potion. This allowed her to open the lightning trapped chest without sustaining any damage. She moved forth to the next chapter.

The Fighter

Baylen takes Bassilus

In a clean fight, Bassilus kills his own minions(Baylen made sure to move in from the south of where Bassilus and made sure to "see" the minions of Bassilus as well as Bassilus himself) and Baylen buffs from a charge of the greenstone amulet. A few whacks from the Varscona and Bassilus is down.

Image IPB

Baylen fights Meilum

There was no vacation resort for Baylen. It was more of a hell ride of sorts. Meilum hits hard and is definitely the better swordsman. Too bad for Meilum, Baylen can run, and use the rock formations as a deflection. Using the arrows he procured from the sirenes, Baylen is able to poison Meilim to death and grab the loot.

Baylen takes on the Bandit Camp Main Tent

The attack on the Bandit Camp went well. Baylen squared off against Taugosz by drinking a potion of absorption and potion of regeneration. With Varscona at hand he dealt with Taugosz quickly and move onwards to the Main Tent (drinking another potion of regeneration) where he(after hearing the ranting) immediately sent charges from the necklace of missiles at the mage. This didn't do much but Baylen did manage to damage some of the enemy. Additional charges were used and this attack was devastating to the enemy forces. Unfortunately, there was collateral damage, the Ender Sai guy was slain in the crossfire. Baylen opened up the chest with the potion of absorption still active and withstood the lightning bolt trap. He moves onwards to the next chapter.

The Fighter/Illusionist

Renalty against Nimbul

Renalty was chased by a stranger in Nashkel, so he ran and then while running he took off his ankheg armor. He chugged the potion of clarity found in Candlekeep and then he buffed mirror image when the man announced his evil intentions. Whether or not the potion of clarity worked, Renalty saved against the horror spell and then took out some of Nimbul's mirror images. Renalty shot a few arrows and then two castings of magic missiles were able to finish Nimbul.

Renalty versus Tranzig

Another chaotic battle for the fighter/illusionist, as the contact for the bandits is engaged. Algernon is charmed first to act as a human shield and Algernon takes the melf's acid arrow like a man. Renalty and Tranzig engage in an exciting magic missile duel. Tranzig one ups Renalty by casting his magic missile before Renalty's aura is cleared. These magic missiles are brutal and dish out plenty of damage. Renalty chugs potions of healing like there is no tomorrow. He runs out of magic missiles so he flees for dear life to cleanse his aura. It is clear Tranzig has the upper hand, and apparently he still had a lightning bolt spell! Perhaps Renalty should have pardoned Tranzig(because Tranzig asked so very nicely to give up). Renalty himself had two lightning bolt spell memorized however lightning bolt is a double edged sword as Tranzig soon learned. The lightning bolt hits Renalty and bounces back at Tranzig! Renalty quickly dodges, hopefully to avoid the bounce back. He does, and Tranzig as it appears, dies to his own bolt. Afterwards Renalty sells the cloak around eight hundred gold.

Renalty attacks the Bandit Camp

When Renalty enters the Bandit Camp, he brings along the wand of paralyzation which Taugosz(after the second charge) falls victim to. Once stunned, Taugosz has no other option then to get smacked real hard repeatedly by Varscona. He goes down for the count. Renalty buffs potion of regeneration, and freedom, and then uses a charge from the Greenstone amulet. While inside the tent, after the leader of the tent has a say in, Renalty opens up with two castings of web. From then on he attempts to blind Raemon but this Raemon saves. Renalty tries to kill Venkt with magic missiles but this mage just isn't in the mood to die to such spell. Renalty attacks with Varscona, his enemies need to save against web or else be held. Web and the potion of freedom make this battle a bit more manageable and Renalty eventually is able to kill everyone except Hakt(the hobgoblin archer). This Hakt is charmed by Renalty and then lead to a corner away from Ender Sai. Renalty uses a charge from the necklace of missiles to do this one in.

Jennifer tackles Tranzig

Jennifer makes sure to charm Algernon before this battle begins, and as she confronts Tranzig, she has Algernon attack Tranzig. Surprise surprise, Algernon actually gets a critical hit in! Tranzig is annoyed by the insect and wastes Algernon with a casting of magic missile. Jennifer buffs from the horn, as well as a potion of insulation, and has a potion of regeneration active. Her mirror image casting is actually countered by the horn charge! However she does not despair as Tranzig starts going at her with magic missiles. They each trade magic missile castings but only her castings are effective. Once out of magic missiles, and the horn charge has worn off, Jennifer cast mirror image once again. Tranzig hasn't run out of magic missiles, and Jennifer needs some time to gather herself so she drinks a precious potion of invisibility. With Tranzig positioning himself besides the stairway, Jennifer decides its time to skull trap him. But even this doesn't end the mighty Tranzig as he begins to launch another spell. Desperation setting in and out of spells, Jennifer simply shoots an arrow at him and Tranzig falls.

Jennifer takes on the Bandit Camp

Jennifer has to pick up several items before taking on the Bandit camp, so she picks up the Greenstone Amulet and goes to work in the Lighthouse, killing sirenes and grabbing the constitution tome. Then she goes down the literal ankheg hole and grabs the wand that shoots fireballs. Jennifer grabs potions of freedom and regeneration. After leveling up she is ready for the Bandit Camp. Upon entering the Bandit Camp, Taugosz chases Jennifer. One charge from the wand of paralyzation stuns Taugosz and Varscona goes to work.

Jennifer buffs with the potion of regeneration, and freedom, and a greenstone amulet charge and then after hearing the man talk his talk, Jennifer unleashes the web spell. This has the desired effect of cluttering up the enemies in the room. One charge from the wand of fireballs has Raemon burnt to crisp and Hakt losing morale. Jennifer rids Venkt of his protections and tosses darts of wounding at him. Venkt gets poisoned and can't do much else but lay down and die. After the bandit leaders are destroyed, Jennifer takes a rest outside and mirror image helps her with the lightning trap on the chest.

The Bard

Rachel and the Lighthouse Area and Tranzig

Rachel had a difficult time in this area. The Sirines lead by Sil nearly ran her off the map. She had to use several charges off the greenstone amulet because she just wasn't doing nearly enough damage to her enemies. After dealing with the Sirines, Rachel was pummeled by a flesh golem for heavy damage(more then half her health) and so she decided the safer method is simply to use invisibility, one to go in and get stuff and the other slot to get on out. An odd thing occurred(I believe it might be because I saved the game after I had left the cave? I really can't remember), after re-entering the cave area, the fog of war was once more active and all the goodies were there including the tome Rachel had decided to use(this was a mistake). Rachel grabbed these clone items and headed on out. She placed the cloned items in the second floor of Feldepost Inn.
Using a single charge from the horn, as well as charming Algernon, Rachel engages in combat with Tranzig. She pumps out three magic missile castings and this is really all that is needed to take care of Tranzig. Rachel moves north and slowly takes down the ankhegs and then steals the ring of free action from Dushai.

Rachel's Incursion on the Bandit Camp

Protected by shield spell, Rachel the half-elf bard strolled into the Bandit Camp and managed to take out a few bandits. Taugosz came out to fight so Rachel cast a web spell and locked him in along with several other bandits. Next thing Rachel did was to charm Taugosz and it turns out his fellow bandit did not like this and started shooting at poor Taugosz while he was all held up in the web. Eventually his former comrade at arms kills him. Rachel decides that she doesn't have enough to continue this attack so she makes a strategic retreat to FA Inn.

After another attack and another strategic retreat, Rachel felt confident enough to attack the main tent. She drank a potion of regeneration, cast shield, and mirror image and went on in to confront. She forgot to use the greenstone amulet but that did not matter. Racel cast web to start things off, this slowed the pace and allowed her to cleanse her aura and cast skull trap in the thick of her enemies. Next, Rachel uses a charge from the wand of fireballs. This kills two of the enemy, but Venkt the mage is still running about. Rachel takes care of him next, and all that remain is the hobgoblin Hakt. It's a shooting battle between the two, but unfortunately for Hakt, the web spell is still active. He attempts to flee in vain, but is shot down by Rachel. The half-elf bard uses the active mirror image to detrap the lightning chest and she moves forward.

The Random Party

Shock and Awe
The Random Party has it's first dance with death(if I can remember correctly). In a nearly fatal situation, Kalembunt almost dies as the party is attacked by what seems to be thirty bandits. The bandits did not appear all at once, and Kalembunt wasted his aura away casting command, believing that there were fewer bandits to contend with. He finally does get to gulp down a potion of healing, but the bandits still are able to amp the pressure on him and his comrades. One of the bandits is charmed and provides a somewhat believable distraction, but luckily the party make it out. Perhaps wandering around in bandit infested territory isn't a bright idea at the moment.

Terror of Tranzig
The Random Party decided to take their chances against the man named Tranzig, which turned out to be a disaster in the making. It seems nothing is going right for this poor party, as Tranzig is able to take out the ranger Helena, and the paladin Catherine, as well as a charmed Algernon. But the real permanent damage seemed to unmask itself when Alexandra the fighter/mage is slain permanently by Tranzig's lightning bolt. Poor planning lead to this unfortunate result. Finally Tranzig is commanded(after several attempts) and is slain. But the party may have lost it's most significant member in Alexandra.

Image IPB

Harrowing Flight
With five remaining members, the random party embark on a perilous journey to the Lighthouse Area. All goes seemingly well until the three Sirenes lead by Sil manage to dominate all the party members except for Naron. Poor Naron has to see all his friends turned against him and he flees for dear life.(Even though the game doesn't end if every party member is dominated in vanilla BG1 I still wish to avoid such a situation, which in this case it luckily does not happen). He is shot with an arrow by a hobgoblin and is near death. He is being chased by wolves and other critters so he uses this to his advantage and is able to get the spear wielding creatures ahead of the wolves affectively blocking the wolves as they move faster then the spear wielders. After alot of running, his party members return back to normal. The sirenes get commanded and they are dealt with in a reasonable fashion.

Dealing with the flesh golems in the cave consisted of buffing Catherine with aid, and potion of aborpstion. Both clerics heal in advance just in case Catherine is hit because a single blow from a flesh golem can be devastating. The party gains the tome of constitution and move on to kill Nereid who incidently kills Naron.

Encounter with Vampiric Wolves
Feeling confident with animate dead, the Random Party decide it is time to take on the wolves in the Temple Area. After much struggle and death, the party must leave the wolves be.

Image IPB

Random Party attacks the Bandit Camp

With no real preparation, armed with simply the urge to move forward, the Random Party pushes into the main tent after no real resistance outside. Three castings of animate dead are in effect during this fight. The mage Venkt is able to get off horror, Kalembunt is hit by something, probably an arrow, so Jekkles needs to heal him. Even with three sets of skeletons roaming about, Helena is slain, as is Jekkles. There isn't much strategy besides animate dead in this fight, all strategy went out the window when Alexandra died. However this proved to be enough to defeat the leaders in the tent, and the Random Party is gracious for any kind of victory.

That's what he said a few weeks back. Nice going, but hard to follow.

Spell choices vary upon one's level and the encounters you expect to be taking on.

Paniced enemies are usually easy to take out with ranged weapons.
...
Level 1
M: Magic Missile x 4, Shield x 2 (AC4, AC2 vs missiles! Mage no longer a target in SCS play)
Spook, Laroch's Minor Drain, Chromatic Orb, Sleep
C: Cure Light Wounds x 2, Bless , Command, Remove Fear, Doom

Obviously, different spells for different situations. I am not serious in saying Blindness is the single most powerful spell in the game. I do also dislike "save or else" spells. However, for a 1st-level spell, it's great.

Obviously, with SCS, Blind guys run around all over the place, which is annoying, but they can still usually be taken out reliably by a mage with darts. I've never really used Spook (never used to play TuTu) but for a L1 mage with terribly THAC0, 3 rounds is not enough. Blindness lasts long enough to be permanent on an encounter basis.

At low levels, I prefer Sleep and Larloch's. At higher levels, they both become pretty useless, and Magic Missiles rule the day. However, Blindness, COrb and Shield have their uses for most of the game. For a Sorcerer, I would probably consider COrb over Blindness for spellbook compression, but Blindness is basically a 1st-level save-or-die spell in one-on-one fights.

Anyway I think this discussion was kind of had before I showed up so I'll try not to derail the thread too much.
