The SCS greater dopplegangers are pretty vicious so you might struggle to win using blind - to do this successfully you would need to get lots of them to chase you round while you try the occasional spell.  Your skeletons should be very useful in this battle because of their resistance to the dopplegangers spells / abilities.

Thankfully I'm not using much of SCS at the moment, so I only have to deal with the vanilla BGT doppelgangaers.

Even so, I think my strategy is going to be Greater Malison followed by Wand of Paralyzation (something I've never used before).  Should put a -8 total on their save if they're not immune.  Of course, use my undead as fodder (perhaps with Haste and Strength of One).  After my failure at the Palace on my last solid attempt,  overkill may be called for.  Even now, any time I make it to Hareishan in the Cloakwood Mines, I go all out in the battle out of spite.

Another way to win this battle is to get some of the dopplegangers to chase you out of the main room - this freezes the action there and gives you plenty of time to deal with the chasers and come back for more.

That I did not know.  Thank you.

Edit: and congrats on Raven's success.

Gorion's Death, Bears, and a Hidden Gem

At the beginning of his trials, Dathorn set about doing what he could to secure more coin for the journey ahead. Candlekeep was not without a few incompetent fools who had thought the young wizard friend enough to help them. Unfortunately the guards, particularly Hull and Fuller, were not fooled by Dathorn's charming smile. The years had made them suspicious, and they were stingy to reward him.

Something did prove interesting, however, as would-be assassins attacked Dathorn while he was snooping around for any stray gold coins. Though he had not memorized any spells for the day, they underestimated how sharp his aim could be with a childhood toy now become deadly weapon: the sling. Dathorn's familiar Soot, a hideous little mephit of dust, was quick to swoop from the rafters and claw out the eyes of the foolish knife wielding wretch. His accomplice, found in another building, was also taken care of with the same merciless efficiency.

They hadn't walked a stones throw from the walls of Candlekeep before Gorion and Dathorn were set upon by an ambush. Rather than throw his life away, Dathorn was quick to find cover as his mentor and foster father fell under attack and died. After a miserable night spent in the rain, with several liberal beatings administered to Soot with his walking stick to stop the mephits bitter complaining, Dathorn awoke to find that the urchin Imoen had tracked him via the trail he and Gorion took.

All those years Dathorn had been pretending to be a confidant to Imoen, but now he was alone and free, and didn't need to put on airs any longer. The moment she insisted to go with him, the young magus waited until her back was turned before Soot leaped to the attack. Blinding her with a gust of ash, she was helpless to the claws of Dathorn's familiar and several well placed sling bullets. Dathorn left her unconscious and near death on the road, after picking her clean of several valuable potions and a wand that would surely come in handy.

Dathorn prepared his spells (sleep was the most effective spell he had at the moment; anything out there would be helpless to Soot's claws when put unconscious) and set out for the day, moving towards the place Gorion fell hoping to find his tome...surely the power hidden there would be immeasurable! Unfortunately the crafty sage had bound it tight with a word of power, a word he took to his grave, and Dathorn was forced to leave it in disgust. He was about to head back towards the road when Soot squealed in alarm; a hungry bear was lumbering right towards them!

Using his sling and prepared spells, Dathorn put the animal down, and out of sheer spite tracked the bear's mate and cubs to a nearby thicket. Soot blinded them all and they both kept their distance as the beasts stumbled around in darkness, only swooping in to finish the job when his master's sling had weakened them.

They camped in the woods eating bear, Dathorn studying his spells while Soot napped stuffed from their meal, and set out as soon as it got dark. Upon reaching the road, Dathorn spied two travelers; one of them was clearly a wizard from his manner of dress, the other a shifty looking halfling. The wizard would surely have spells that would be useful! Soot leapt to the attack, as Dathorn supported him with spell and bullet. The halfling proved to the stubbornly resistant to both, even able to keep from being blinded and grievously wounding Soot.

Fortunately, Dathorn's familiar was fast even wounded as he was, regenerating the cut and laughing at the halfling while he blundered through the brush being peppered by sling bullets. He fell, and Dathorn looted both their corpses, rewarded with two new spell scrolls (apparently the wizard was a Necromancer, judging from his magic) and even more useful potions of healing.

Dathorn spent the night camped in the woods, studying the scrolls and transcribing them into his spellbook. They were attacked in the early hours of the morning by a single gibberling wretch, but the diseased mongrel was no match for a hungry dust mephit and angry young wizard. Soot ate his breakfast and they set off along the road. After a short time, the sharp eyed mephit spotted a glittering among the trees, and though annoyed Dathorn inspected his suspicions.

Expecting to find nothing more than a bit of metal, Dathorn was surprised when his hand closed around a diamond! He ignored Soot's satisfied leer, tucking it into his robes and mumbling that perhaps at the next inn his familiar would be treated to a bit of stew. They set off down the road (ignoring the odd looks from a traveler) towards the Friendly Arm; Dathorn desired a real bed, tired of camping in mud and grass.

...To be continued!

Out of Character Notes

Congratulations on Raven, Grond0, I've been following his progress and it's exciting to see he made it into Amn.

Wow! Soot is a lot more useful than I thought. His ability to blind enemies with glitter and irritate them with dust really helps, in addition to being a pretty sturdy combat pet. No gibberling can mess with him!

I took my one conjurer proficiency point in a sling, and I've relied on it many times just in the wilderness outside Candlekeep. With Dathorn's decent dex it gives me a semi regular attack that, while it may not do much damage, it is steady when I'm out of spells. I managed to kill about eight bears and two wolves, with a small handful of gibberlings, so I'm almost to level two even before reaching the second screen.

I also did not know about that diamond at all. Huh. It just goes to show you that as many times as you play this game, you always seem to find something surprising.

Another update coming soon!

Gibberlings, An Ogre, and a Nasty Surprise

Dathorn and his familiar Soot continued along the road before they were set upon by a massive gibberling horde! There had to be at least twelve, maybe fifteen of them, as they surged out of the scrubby undergrowth to attack en masse. Backing away with his familiar close at hand, Dathorn let go with a single sleep spell, felling them all with his magic and making them helpless to the dilligent claws of a gleeful dust mephit.

They camped in the wilderness for the next few days, hunting wolves and local gibberlings while talking with a fellow they met on the road. Dathorn asked for directions, learning that the Friendly Arm Inn was to the north. Deciding instead to hone his prowess further (reached Level 2), the young magus trudged off into the nearby wilderness to hunt more animals...only to run into a gigantic ogre! Yet even this lumbering beast was no match for a well timed sleep spell and even better aimed bullets.

As they walked through the wilderness, Dathorn and Soot came across a ravaged caravan. Unfortunately the bandit leader didn't take kindly to their presence, and with a single well placed arrow, ended the life of Gorion's ward.

Game over.

Out of Character Notes

Wow! I didn't expect my game to be over so quickly. I expected to land a sleep spell on the bandits before they could react, but like a bolt from beyond, the leader's first arrow was a massive critical that dropped Dathorn's 17 HP in one shot.

It seems I seriously underestimated this challenge! I shall have to carefully consider my next character before taking this on again.

Nice story Eviscerotica - sorry about the end. That bandit leader is nasty for a low level character - I think he has grand mastery in bow. I suspect that he only reacts to the presence of the main character, not a familiar; if that's right you could use a mephit or similar to attack (first force-attack the individual bandits to get rid of them and then try spells on the leader to soften him up before engaging in melee).

@Shadow-Leech07.  Kensai is actually not a particularly difficult class if you know what encounters to expect.  It helps enormously to have expertise in either dagger or axe to give you good missile weapon capacity, while potions can provide good armour class for the relatively few occasions when melee is necessary.  The major drawback I find is the vulnerability to criticals, but the high HPs (compared to say a thief) can more than compensate for that.

That's interesting. Currently, while I don't have Tutu, I am playing a fighter but with kensai restrictions so it's good to know she might have a chance .

I'd hoped to have been a little more competitive on my first No-Reload effort.  Instead, it appears instead that I will  be famous for posting the shortest No-Reload Challenge effort in the history of the Bioware Forum.

Yup. My PC took two arrows that totalled more than 14 hps and his challenge ended abruptly and without fanfare.

Here's my final post.

                                                                                           One and Done!

Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira and I spent the next day in and around the FAI.  We met a number of interesting folks.  We were even able to help a resident named Joia to retrieve a Flamedance Ring that had been stolen by some Hobgoblins (Orecai) that plagued the grounds just outside the FAIs walls.  Not sure why no one has exterminated them before as I'm sure they were hostile to others arriving at the inn.   Regardless, we killed about seven or eight Orecai and recovered her ring. She was grateful.

After word got around about our helping Joia, we also received a couple of other requests for help which we put on our list of things to accomplish before we got to Nashkel. A Dwarf, Unshey, asked us to recover a belt that he'd had taken by an Ogre somewhere south of the inn and a Gnome, Landrin, asked us to clear her home in Beregost of Spider's and return some personal items to her at the FAI.

Once we secured the FAI, we headed south to the Coast Way to try and clear that area of hostile monsters and then do the same @ Lion's way before heading on the Beregost.  We killed a pack of Gibberling’s and a pack of Xvart’s before tracking down the 'Ogre with the Belt Fettish'. We engaged him and he made us fight a tough battle trying to avoid his Morning Star and attack when it was to our advantage. I finally dropped him with a blow across his chest.  From there we continued to explore the Coast Way.

---  Key Event Occurs Here ---

Key Event: We came across four Bandits that had just finished raiding a caravan.  We deployed into our standard formation but the damaged caravan was between us and the Bandits so Khalid and I were forced to go around to the left of the wagons to get to the bandits who were armed with short bows.

I attacked the Bandit Leader with Khalid just behind me.  Imoen and Jaheira stayed back to attack with ranged weapons.  I took an arrow to the chest that knocked me back but Khalid tossed me a Potion of Healing (PoH) and I quaffed it and kept driving on the bandit leader. The Bandit Leaders marksmanship was deadly and her next arrow hit me in the right side of my stomach. I was bleeding profusely and Jaheira came running to try and provide combat healing under fire but the next arrow from the Bandit leader found the mark before she could cast the spell.  I suddenly went blank.

After my foray into darkness, we actually ran a second failed mission, before we separated and destroyed the Bandit’s one at a time.  I am truly thankful to know that if I am killed in combat my party will get me to a Priest as soon as humanly possible – as will I for them.

Treasure Acquired: (Legend: Sold (S); General Party Use (GP); Stanley (St), Minsc (Mi), Khalid (Kh) etc; Spellbook (Sb):  Splint Mail (St); Bandit Scalps x 4; Enchanted Arrows(not yet identified; Miscellaneous arms & gems (S);  ~50 gp

Leader Notes: As we go forth, I will have to be more cautious.  As a Templar I’m taught to charge into battle w/o fear and I want the toughest foe first.  But I have a lot to learn out here. Thank God for the Gnomish Priestess Gellena Mirrorshade who twice Raised me and once raised Imoen. The 300gp was more than fair.

Current Disposition: Resting @ the FAI

Next Steps: We head from here to finish clearing the Coast Way before doing the same in Lion’s way. Then it’s on to Beregost, then south to Nashkel – or at least that’s the plan.

Game Notes/Questions: I’ll take this PC, with two reloads, over to the Minimal Reload Challenge.  For those of you not familiar with the Minimal Reload Challenge, the challenge rests on the assumption that your party members choose to raise your character. You ‘donate’ to the next temple you arrive at the amount that would have been required to Raise Dead on your character.

Promotions: Imoen has definately made progress as a Thief/Swashbuckler.  She made it to 2nd Lvl and used her Thieving skill points to evenly distrubute between Find Traps, Pick Locks, Hide in Shadow and Move Silently.

Current Party:  (Reputation: 14 - Popular)
Seth:1st Lvl Ftr;(18/99,15,18,10,10,18); Std. Leather/Two Handed Sword/Flail (Profs: 2HS, Flail, 2HWS, SWS)
Imoen, 2nd Lvl Th(Swbklr); Leather/Dagger +1/Sh. Bow (Profs: Dag, SB)
Khalid, 1st/1st Ftr(Kensai)/Mage; 2xKatana/Thr. Dagger (Profs: Katana, Scimitar, Dagger, 2WS)
Jaheira, 1st lvl Druid; Std. Leather/Sling/Club (Profs: Club, Sling)

Reloads:  2

Mods Used: Easy Tutu/TOB; Hard Times, BG1 UB; NPC 1 Project; Item Randominizer, BGII Tweak Pack, SCS, Level 1 NPCs

Hard luck CKT - hope to see you again here soon.

That bandit leader is causing havoc at the moment it seems.  Perhaps you should temper that paladin enthusiasm to be in the front line just a touch - at least until you've got some more HPs and better equipment..

Hardly - there have been plenty of efforts that have not got out of Candlekeep (I have more than my share of thoseImage IPB).  Being killed by a wolf in the first wilderness area is quite common and Montaron and Xzar have chalked up victims as well.

Yep, seen plenty of shorter runs. Tarnesh outside the FAI took quite a few of my early characters out, something like a 50% success rate. I now leave him until later.

As a serial paladinner I would say pick your fights. Free xp (Marl, Firebeads book, rescue Brage, talk to Noober) will get you to level 2 without having to fight anything. Ankheg armour can then be used to get a ring for Joia, then maybe help Melicamp, get the letter for Mirianne and clear Gnarl/Hairtooth from their bridge which is probably enough for level 3.

I agree with Grond0 - in a no re-load, don't have your PC in front until he has some HP under his belt and better equipment. You certainly don't want to be taking multiple arrows, as if you get multiple criticals in a row, then that's it.

I too have had a very short run -- I had an all thief party in BG 1, and they tried to go to FAI from Candlekeep, but got ambushed by 12 bandit archers and 4 melees. That ended that run. I now delay FAI until I have at least one level under my belt, perhaps delay 2 levels if my character is a caster type.

Oh well, I did kill Tarnesh.

I'd thought of going to get Ajantis before heading south but decided to wait until later in the game. I was headed to get Kivan and Branwen but thought I'd could get there with just the four.

Maybe next time I'll play a Cleric - my other favorite PC type. That Command Spell might well get me past Tarnish again!

Heck of a screenshot though! Thanks Gate.

After coming to a grinding halt in BG2 rather earlier than I would have liked I've rolled up a random character for a fresh start.
Image IPB

The aim with Mantis is to proceed through the game quickly, but trying to avoid being attacked (by weapons, spells or traps) as long as possible.  I normally use traps pretty rarely, but might try using that as a main strategy this time.

Yep, I don't even post my entries any more until they hit some pre-determined milestone (reached Nashkel, reached L5, have 20hp, whatever).

I would say half of my runs end before making it to Nashkel.  If I make it there, I tend to survive until Baldur's Gate.  Still haven't cracked all the various ways I get myself killed there.

@After5CST:
I can easily get to Baldur's Gate soloing((Wolves don't like one shotting me for some reason)) with a Fighter Cleric. I once killed Bassilus with a level 2 fighter/cleric. :) All you need up to that point((Sirines exempted if using Baldur's Gate 2 rules)) are command and summons.

@Everyone Else - ((Message me if you actually care, I'll attempt to make a story.))
Anyways, I'm starting a new one and am wondering which class I should try? I have Fighter Cleric cased for as far as I can tell. I've also gained TotSC so I'll stumble through that as well if I reach there.

RIP Cast, M Half-Elf Cleric Mage

Play log (continued):
Killed Shaol the Naerid
(Reached Mage 7)
Blinded and killed Revenant
Liberated Wand of Monster Summoning from 3 Ghasts
Retrieved Tome of Wisdom from Durlag's Tower
(Starting Cloakwood)
Defended Aldeth from the druids
Used Sanctuary to move through forest (until Mine exterior)
Killed Drasus and Co. with Sanctuary, Stinking Cloud x2, Fireball x2, Skeletons, and Hold Person
Moved via Sanctuary to Hareishan
Cleared room with Resist Fire, Ring of Fire Prot., Fireball, Antidote, Wand of Fire
Helped Rill bribe the guards
Moved via Sanctuary to Daveorn's Level
Sent charmed guard and skeletons to kill Davaeorn (failed)
Sent two Animal Summoning I's (Dire Wolves) to kill Davaeorn (failed)
Used Santuary, Fire Shield Red, Resist Fire, Fireball x2 against Davaeorn
Killed Davaeorn with Wand of Fire x2 and Staff +3
Killed Battle Horrors with Skull Trap x2, Magic Missile x2, and Acid Arrow
Flooded the mine
Talked to Scar
Investigated the Merchant League (testing strategies against Doppelgangers)
Investigated the Seven Suns
(accidentally killed a merchant for -10 REP)
Reported Shapeshifters to Scar
Cleared Seven Suns
Used the "Manual of Quickness of Action"
Killed Ogre Mage in Sewers
Performed poison quest (and acquired Wisdom Tome)
Returned son to Tremaine
Silenced and killed Ramazith
Used Sanctuary to move to tower top and get INT Tome
Found Helm of Balduran, eating a fireball in the process
Was refused service at the Helm & Cloak Inn
Ran to the top of the Iron Throne
Battled valiantly, but ran out of HP before the last opponent fell

I should have known to be better prepared.  The Merchant Leage went well.  The Seven Suns nearly got Cast killed, but we managed to pull it through.  The Iron Throne was, simply put, just too much.  Working solo against large mixed groups of opponents is a skill I've never had to master before, and it bit back this time.

I learned a lot from this solo run.  Even so, I'll probably do a group again on my next play-through when that happens.

And for the record, Blindness and/or the Wand of Paralyzation works great against Dopplegangers (non-SCS variety).

peacock, Cuckoo and Magpie. A trio of halfling thieves.

Bandit Camp.
Snares take care of Ardenor Crush, and Taugosz Khosann.

Magpie places two snares in the main tent then waits for peacock and Cuckoo to arrive.
Image IPB

Cloakwood.
Two snares soften up Seniyad and his druids making them easy pickings in a fight. More snares deal with spiders, ettercaps but not a hamadryad. peacock and Cuckoo are charmed, leaving Magpie outnumbered. He glugs two potions to stay alive, then the hamadryad casts entangle and melees peacock. Unable to get away, he holds up his hand within seconds.

Out again, not sure what class/kit to return with yet.

The Hamadryad is quite deadly and easily underestimated. I almost always backstab her if possible. Sorry for your losses Gate70&After5CST.

@Gem Hound: Have you tried a solo Monk yet? The speed advantage helps a lot with staying alive, and it is interesting to play the class in early levels where you actually have to use weapons sometimes.

For my next attempt, I've rolled up a Bounty Hunter. I'll try playing an evil party and see how long I can stomach it. Once I've gone far enough to decide the party can make a go of it, I'll post an entry.

Initial thoughts on party composition: CHARNAME, Kagain, Viconia, Edwin

Consolations, Gate70. Yeah that Hamadryad can hit surprisingly hard with her unenchanted dagger. I also try to backstab her if possible, although lately I take someone under stealth and let her have some fun with skeletons if backstab not a good option.

As to what class to try - a lot of good options, but I must admit I do like duals, usually fighter to cleric, mage, thief or druid. My fighter dualed to druid made it all the way to Melissan and beat her - druid summons weak in BG 1 (until the end of the game), but in BG 2 and ToB they are quite helpful, plus of course the plague of insects or call lightnings.

@After5CST - Coran might be a good addition to your party, as he can either bow or tank, depending on what you are needing. Garrick could be useful for ID and another arcane party member, if you can stomach his low HP.

EDIT: forgot to mention Garrick with the light crossbow of speed a bit more useful than a mages sling or darts.
